Top Names Being Discussed For 2013 WWE Hall of Fame, Randy Savage To Be Inducted?

Primary names being discussed for the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on April 6 at Madison Square Garden are individuals with connections to the New York City area.

* Mick Foley, who hails from New York and was inspired to become a professional wrestler after watching “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka leap from the top of a steel cage in Madison Square Garden

* Kevin Nash, who defeated Bob Backlund in eight seconds at Madison Square Garden to win the WWF Championship.

* Bob Backlund, who declined an invitation to be enshrined in 2004 and headlined numerous events at Madison Square Garden in the 1970s and 1980s.

WWE officials have also discussed enshrining the late Randy Savage, although it is unknown as to whether his family, the Poffos, have been approached on the matter.

Triple H has taken a much greater role in coordinating the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and WrestleMania than he has in the past for the events. It was his decision to reach out to Bruno Sammartino in June and he personally handled site surveying for MetLife Stadium.

Kevin Nash Reacts To Backlash Over Interview Comments, Thinks CM Punk Should Join The nWo

Speaking to Steven Muehlhausen of The Fight Club Chicago at last week’s Chicago Comic Con, Kevin Nash addressed his controversial Grantland.com remarks stating that the professional wrestling industry died at WrestleMania XX when the pay-per-view event concluded with “Vanilla Midgets” Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero—small-statured, gifted technical wrestlers that lacked big in-ring personalities but were beloved by fans—reigning atop as world champions.

“(People getting mad) at something I said ten years ago, yeah okay. It’s great that it’s still relevant ten years later. I guess I’m not allowed to have an opinion,” Nash said, who had also claimed in the Grantland.com interview that his comments regarding wrestlers such as Benoit and Guerrero were “a double work.”

He stated in the Grantland.com interview that he has the same problem with today’s “Internet heroes,” CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.

“They are not bigger than life,” Nash told Grantland.com. “I bet they could both walk through airports and not be noticed unless they have a gimmick shirt on and the belt.”

Nash is now suggesting that his remarks concerning Punk and Bryan are “a work.” He tells Muehlhausen, “Because they are on TV and if I would want to have an angle with somebody, I think I would want to work with the top guys.”

Nash says Punk would fit in well with his proposed nWo relaunch.

“He has that nWo grit to him, he kinda runs by his own accord,” Nash said. “He’s very anti-establishment, and I personally like him. I like hanging out with him. So if I’m going to work with somebody, I’m going to work with someone that I enjoy hanging out with.”

Nash also discusses SummerSlam with Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar and notes a never before known fact about the night D-Generation X “invaded” WCW. The interview is available at www.sportstownchicago.com/kevinnash.

“Chavo Classic” And Tracy Smothers Take Offense To Kevin Nash’s “Vanilla Midgets” Remarks

Grantland.com published a lengthy article last week on the life and controversial wrestling career of Kevin Nash with the six-time world champion notably reiterating his stance on “Vanilla Midgets,” a dismissive term he used behind-the-scenes in the late ’90s in World Championship Wrestling to describe small-statured, gifted technical wrestlers such as Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero. Nash said the professional wrestling industry died at WrestleMania XX when the pay-per-view event concluded with Benoit and Guerrero—both of whom were under six-feet-tall—reigning atop as world champions and emotionally celebrating. Guerrero’s brother, Chavo Guerrero, Sr., took offense to Nash’s remarks and posted a scathing rebuttal on Facebook.

“Chavo Classic” wrote, “K 4 THOSE WHO CARE IM NOT AGAINST NASH HE HAS ALL THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS HIS OPINION OR THOUGHTS BLOOD SEEMS TO TRIGGER A GUERRERO BLAST. SO I WLL PUT IT REAL SIMPLE IF U THE READER ARE PUTTING UP UR $ ON A VENUE PRO WRESTLING PROMOTION, AND U HAVE THE DEMOGRAPHICS NEXT TO U AND THE TV VIEWERS IN FRONT OF U, WHO R U GOING TO GO WITH TO MAKE $, I WLD GO FOR THE BOX OFFICE GUY, IN THIS CASE , HANDS DOWN, GUERRERO AND BENOIT BY FAR UNLESS U WANT TO SEE BIG SEXY IN HIS UNWASHED LEATHERS APPEAR AND SIGN AUTOGRAPHS BECAUSE HE IS A FREAK OF NATURE, IN NORMAL STANDARDS. “K I’M ON ROLL, U FUCK WITH THE GUERREROS WTCH OUT, BEING THE ELDEST AND BEING OUTSPOKEN AS I AM, ONCE AGAIN,, KEVIN NASH WAS A BASKETBALL PLAYER, NOT A WRESTLER, PLAYED FOR THE TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS 1979-1980 DID NOT PLAY HIS 4TH YR. HE KEEPS HIS SHIT UP IN DESRESPECTING MY BROTHER OF BLOOD, MY BROTHER CHRIS AND WRESTLING AND I WILL EXPOSE MORE MORE SH– ON HIM THAN HE KNOWS HE HAS. SO LET IT BE SAID SO LET IT BE WRITTEN, “JULE BRENNER, THE 10 COMMENDMENTS< ' ORALE CABRONES FACTS ARE FACTS."

Likewise, Tracy Smothers went on Facebook to blast "Big Sexy": "Kevin Nash can go to Hell for his comments bout Chris,Eddie, was wrong to say that,u have done well, made lots of money Kevin.Im sure their families are hurt bout yr b.s. comments.U have no respect for the business or the people int it who helped yr ungrateful SORRY ASS.That wasn,t k,don,t go there, they hav kinfolks that are very hurt, why say that.YR APISS ANT PUNK,COWARD.I waana pull yr eyeballs out u JACKOFF,ANYTIME,ANYPLACE,YR A PIECE OF SHIT CANCER in our business."

Nash Responds To Backlash For His Benoit & Guerrero Comments

Kevin Nash was on Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Doug Mortman and responded to the backlash against his recent comments about the wrestling business dying when Chris Benoit & Eddie Guerrero held WWE’s top titles. You can hear Busted Open from 2-4 ET on Sirius 94, XM 208, and Sportszone 860 on the internet.

Here’s what Nash said about:

On his recent comments about the size of today’s top guys: “I’m talking about them as wrestlers, I’m talking about them as their wrestling persona as far as visual. I’m not talking about anything [else]. I’ve stated before, these guys are incredibly great technical wrestlers. All of them. But there’s a reason why Chrisitan Bale in Batman has armor on and is bigger than life. There’s a reason why in all these Marvel movies if [the guys] don’t have gigantic muscles and aren’t oversized, they’re CGIs. I don’t remember Stan Lee when he started Marvel Comics making a 5-foot-7 guy.”

On Shawn Michaels succeeding despite not being a ‘big guy’: “Shawn Michaels was 6-foot-1 and a half and weighed 225 pounds in his prime. That’s a big difference between 5-foot-7. That’s a difference between a 6-foot-8 power forward and a 7-foot-1 center. CM Punk doesn’t have Shawn Michaels’ physical ability. I mean, Vince Carter and [Michael] Jordan are the same size.”

On the PG Era and CM Punk: “I think the number one thing that hurts still is the fact that they’re PG. I’m a huge fan of Punk’s [but] I’m sorry, it’s hard for me to watch two grown men say they’re going to beat the crap out of each other. That’s my personal opinion. I’m also saying that it doesn’t look to me like he spends a lot of time in the weight room. I just think it would enhance his look and everything. We were all drug free and drug tested for years at the WWE, and there were a lot of guys that had great physiques. I think that comes with it.”

On the widespread reaction his comments received: “You guys aren’t backstage, you guys aren’t around when the brass makes decisions. You guys aren’t around when they all say, ‘God, I wish he was bigger,’ [or] ‘God yeah, but the guy just doesn’t have enough size.’ It’s their opinion. I’m just stating my opinion. I’m not saying I’m right. But am I not allowed my opinion? I pay taxes, I’m allowed my opinion. In my opinion, that’s how I feel. That doesn’t mean anybody else has to jump aboard and say I have to agree with him because he says so. Number one, I’ve always been an Internet darling and always will be and if I were to say something and was just somebody that didn’t have an opinion, you wouldn’t be calling me. It’s just because Kevin Nash said it. Oh my God, Kevin Nash said it. Oh my God, Jericho rebutted. For Eddie [Guerrero] and Chris [Benoit], Eddie was a friend [and] Chris was a friend. When the tragedy went down with Benoit I think I was one of the few guys that went on TV and tried to make some sense of it. These people that think I’m desecrating deceased wrestlers; I’m talking about them as [wrestlers] and not the person. Sometimes I look at it and I just go you know what, don’t even have an opinion, be a sheep like everybody else.”

On Chris Jericho’s tweet that the worst year of WWE business was when he was champion: “[I] Absolutley disagree. When I walked in the door in 1993, we did a $100,000 gate at Madison Square Garden. My last show at the Garden we did $309,000 before I jumped to WCW and I was in the main event with Shawn Michaels. I absolutely disagree. The business was better when I left than when I got there.”

On if the company’s future is in good hands with Triple H: “Absolutely. I think he’ll change the product in the way that he feels is good to change the product. I don’t think the product will stay the same. I think that he has a different vision than other people do. I’m just saying other people; I mean, Vince isn’t the only one that is in the meetings and has a voice. There’s other people. Kevin Dunn . . . There’s a lot of people that have a voice in that company.”

On John Cena: “I think he’s fantastic. I think he’s stayed true, I think he’s playing the hardest part in wrestling which is the white-meat babyface. He never looks anything but fantasitc. Even though he’s not a giant, tall man, he has a bigger than life personality.”

On a problem WWE has that many people don’t realize: “The biggest problem that the WWE probably has right now, and which people don’t think about, is they’ve got guys down there that have been on handheld cameras for 25 years. It’s not easy to shoot pro wrestling. Somebody sooner or later has to take Kerwin [Silfies’] spot, has to take Dunn’s spot in those trucks [and] has to make those incredible last-second calls that makes a near-miss look like the person gets their head taken off. Their prodcution alone is impeccable. When you look at the company and the scope of its international ability and everything that it does, it’s beyond first-rate.”

On if the WWE went in a different direction because of MMA: “No. I think what happened is MMA got hot, and just like anything else, you buy a $60 fight, it goes a minute and 12 seconds, [and] you’re not that apt to buy another $60 fight the next month. This is where I’ll always say pro wrestling will always have a great advantage. If it’s The Rock vs. Cena at WrestleMania, you know it’s not going a minute and a half. You know it’s going to go 20-25 minutes. You go to a movie and you know the action on the movie is not real [and] yet you’re enthralled, you have complete escapism. I think that’s what pro wrestling gives you, it gives you that escapism. It gives you that ability to watch a main event for 30 minutes and feel like you’ve got your money’s worth.”

On the essence of his comments: “Number one, one of the classic stories of all-time is always going to be David and Goliath. Now I doubt it would be a biblical story if it was David vs. David. I think that you always need that bigger than life [wrestler], especially in a heel role. I always want the heel to be bigger than the babyface . . . That’s my preference. I hated playing the babyface. I never liked the role because it just doesn’t make sense; they end up working your leg for 20 minutes because they’re not gong to be able to pick you up and throw you around. It just doesn’t work.”

On if he has an issue with CM Punk: “Yeah, I have such an issue with him that we fell asleep next to each other in the locker room in London and I knew he had a bad back and I made sure that he got up so he wouldn’t have to be in too much pain. I hung around with him most of the time that I was on the Europeran trip. I talked to him on a daily basis. We were handed edits to our live intereviews 30 seconds before we went on live to Raw and basically had the ability to look at each other like we’re going out into a fox hole together. I have nothing but respect for Phil, I’ve said that a million times.”

On his feud with CM Punk last year: “I think I was so rusty; I basically spent five years doing taped interviews. I was so out of my element and plus, it’s very controlled. It’s not like it used to be where you just kind of went out there and were able to wing it. I never felt comfortable in my element one time. I was told by Vince not to yell. ‘Don’t yell,’ ‘Don’t do this,’ ‘Your cadence is too slow.’ I was like, ‘Dude, I’ve been doing this for 25 years I talk like this.’ So it was difficult for me, I’m not going to say it wasn’t. It never felt comfortable, and you walk in the door and you don’t know anybody. I’m not saying that it was a bad experience, I wish I could have done the favor for Phil. I wish we could have had the match and I wish I could have put him over.”

On why he was pulled from the feud: “What happened was I was on Plavix. And the WWE wellness doctor said that there was a chance that if I was to get an internal injury or something like that during the match that I could bleed out and die. So they had to pull me and get me off Plavix whatever the amount of time was and by that time, Triple H had to fight Punk.”

On the ‘What’ chants: “The ‘What’ chants go away if you can combat them, but if you can’t say anything that’s beyond PG then you can’t . . . it’s horrible. It’s just one of those things where it takes away so much from the show, it just makes you feel like you’re watching a circus sometime. It’s horrible. It sold T-shirts but you know what? It’s the only thing Steve did wrong.”

Jim Ross Comments On Nash’s Rant About Benoit & Guerrero

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. In this entry, Ross focused primarily on Kevin Nash’s recent controversial comments about the pro wrestling industry “dying” at WrestleMania 20, which culminated with Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero celebrating in the ring as the company’s top champions.

MVP Responds to Kevin Nash

Here are some highlights of what Jim Ross said about the situation:

“I’m an old school guy who thinks that wrestlers come in all shapes and sizes and that the final, final decree on how well said talents produce is ultimately left up to the consumer aka the fans.”

“Lots of sub six feet tall athletes have been huge box office draws in the biz over the years. There are too many to mention here.”

“Several big men who have migrated into the pro wrestling world simply because of their size have failed. Some haven’t. Kevin Nash was and still is very successful. He’s made a lot of money and he’s saved it. Smart guy. Out of the entire Grantland piece the thing that I felt was most compelling for today’s wrestlers, rookies, wannabe’s, etc, is that Kevin Nash made big money and he took care of it.”

Despite the negative backlash Nash’s comments have received on Twitter, from past and present wrestlers, Ross went on to praise Nash:

“Nash is a brilliant guy…love him or hate him. He’s a survivor and by any means necessary which at times doesn’t sit well with some people.”

“I helped give Kevin one of his first breaks while we were both in Atlanta in the early 90’s when WCW management, and I use that term loosely, did not know what to do with an athletic, 7 footer who could talk and who had a great look. When management heard Kev in on my WSB Radio show it opened their eyes to what they potentially had.”

“No, I don’t agree with Kevin on his smaller wrestlers theory as I like all that have true talent. But I do defend his right to express himself and chuckle at the ability that he has to manipulate fans and peers alike in 140 characters or less.”

* CHRIS JERICHO Goes Off On Kevin Nash For His BENOIT/GUERRERO Comments

Jericho Takes Offense To Nash’s Remarks, Starts Twitter Fight

Grantland.com published a lengthy article Tuesday on the life and controversial wrestling career of Kevin Nash with the six-time world champion notably reiterating his stance on “Vanilla Midgets,” a dismissive term he used behind-the-scenes in the late ’90s in World Championship Wrestling to describe small-statured, gifted technical wrestlers such as Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero.

Nash said the professional wrestling industry died at WrestleMania XX when the pay-per-view event concluded with Benoit and Guerrero—both of whom were under six-feet-tall—reigning atop as world champions and emotionally celebrating. Chris Jericho, who worked his way up the wrestling ranks alongside Benoit and Guerrero, publicly took offense to Nash’s remarks and responded with another commonly used stance.

Jericho tweeted late Tuesday evening:

The oft-used point originated from Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer, who has repeated stated over the years that WWE had its worst financial period in company history in 1995 when Nash held the WWF Championship as Diesel.

Nash responded to Jericho’s tweet minutes later, writing:

https://twitter.com/realkevinnash/status/233066381141213184

Nash’s last insult is in reference to Jericho being the first contestant to be eliminated in the 2006 Fox Television singing reality show Celebrity Duets.

Jericho quickly shot back:

To recap, Nash’s interview comments triggering Jericho’s rebuttal were:

“When Benoit and Guerrero hugged [at the end of WrestleMania XX], that was the end of the business. Has business been the same since that WrestleMania? Has it come close to the Austin era? Has it come close to the nWo or the Hogan era? You put two fucking guys that were great workers that were the same height as the fucking referees, and I’m sorry, man. Are you going to watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick? Even if you’re not gay, you will not watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick. That’s not the standard in porno films. So you put a 5-foot-7 guy as your world champion.”

Nash Says Benoit and Guerrero As Champs Killed Pro Wrestling

Grantland.com has published a lengthy article on the life and controversial wrestling career of Kevin Nash, who has begun to gain traction in Hollywood. A notable point in the article has the six-time world champion reiterating his stance on “Vanilla Midgets,” a dismissive term he used as booker in the late ’90s in World Championship Wrestling to describe small-statured, gifted technical wrestlers who didn’t project larger than life personalities but were beloved by fans, such as Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko.

“Big Sexy” feels the professional wrestling industry died in 2004 at WrestleMania XX when WWE’s “Super Bowl” concluded with the image of the under six-foot-tall grapplers reigning supreme as champions and emotionally celebrating. Even though the two wrestlers are now deceased, he still believes they never belonged in the main event scene due to their small stature.

UPDATE: Jericho Responds To Nash’s Remarks & Starts Twitter Fight

“When Benoit and Guerrero hugged [at the end of WrestleMania XX], that was the end of the business,” Nash says. “Has business been the same since that WrestleMania? Has it come close to the Austin era? Has it come close to the nWo or the Hogan era? You put two fucking guys that were great workers that were the same height as the fucking referees, and I’m sorry, man. Are you going to watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick? Even if you’re not gay, you will not watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick. That’s not the standard in porno films. So you put a 5-foot-7 guy as your world champion.”

Nash has the same problem with today’s “Internet heroes,” CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.

“They are not bigger than life,” he says. “I bet they could both walk through airports and not be noticed unless they have a gimmick shirt on and the belt.”

Nash also discussed how The Kliq shifted financial compensation in the wrestlers’ favor, how his 1995 heel turn inspired the “Attitude Era” and the subsequent ascent of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, cursing out Tom Cruise’s makeup artist on the set of Rock of Ages and more. Kevin Nash Appearing In New Fraternity Film – Watch The Trailer

Kevin Nash appears in the trailer for The Newest Pledge, a Lionsgate production slated for release on August 28, 2012. In the film, “a hard partying fraternity decides to pledge a baby that they find on their doorstep the morning after their most decadent party of the semester.” Jason Mewes, Mindy Sterling and Andy Milonakis also star.

The film has a second wrestling connection as famous bodybuilder Mike O’Hearn, who has rejected multiple contract offers from top wrestling organizations, appears as a cop. He signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation in 1994, but was forced to renege due to his contract with American Gladiators. He appeared on WCW Monday Nitro in 2000 as part of a brief cross-promotional feud between WCW and Battle Dome. WCW officials wanted to sign him then, but he was unable to due to his commitments with Battle Dome. John Laurinaitis then had a WWE contract for him on the table in 2003 and 2004. He strongly considered the offer, but ultimately rejected it. Additionally, his ex-wife is former WCW valet Midajah and he appeared on the Hulk Hogan-hosted American Gladiators reboot on NBC. Steve Austin also noted last week via Twitter that he was “on the comeback trail” training alongside O’Hearn.

Tensai Not Bothered By “Albert” Chants, WWE Back In Mississippi

– Since returning to WWE, Tensai has often been subject to ridiculing chants referencing his past persona, A-Train, which talent are forbidden from acknowledging on-air. Contrary to popular belief, Tensai says he’s not bothered by them.

Punk vs. Bryan Storyline News, Nash Jokes About Returning

– Kevin Nash joked with fans on Twitter that he will be taking over as the General Manager of Monday Night RAW now that John Laurinaitis has been fired:

While it’s highly unlikely that Kevin Nash will be the new RAW General Manager, there’s a chance we will see him on WWE television over the next several weeks – either as one of the weekly “old school” matches (ie. Vader last week) or with a cameo on the 1,000th episode of RAW on 7/23.

– CM Punk has had one of the longest WWE title reigns in years, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that WWE is not entirely sold on long term title reign for the Chicago native.

Once again, WWE officials came very close to having CM Punk drop the WWE Championship to Daniel Bryan. Sunday’s No Way Out pay-per-view was the second consecutive event that WWE nearly pulled the trigger on the title switch.

While WWE is said to be very pleased with the way Punk has performed as champion (despite his title defenses not main eventing WWE PPVs), the company is also very high on Daniel Bryan and there is a feeling that more money could be made with Punk chasing Bryan for the championship.

Kevin Nash Talks Last WWE Run, CM Punk, WWE vs. TNA, HOF

Chris Kelly (@H2HCrelly) and The Trey Dawg (@TreyWNL) were joined by former WWE Champion Kevin Nash (@RealKevinNash) for a special interview on this week’s Running The Ropes found over at www.facebook.com/runningtheropes.radio.. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

How the idea of his WWE return came about: “I was actually on my way to go to the gathering with the Insane Clown Posse and I got a phone call three or four days before that and they said “Hey, do you want to come to SummerSlam and stick Punk and make him lose the title to Del Rio?” I said, “Yeah sure, why not.”

Thoughts on CM Punk: “I would have liked to put the kid (CM Punk) over as I think he is a good talent and I enjoy watching him and he could definitely carry me to having a good match. I have enough left in me and I need somebody with his ability to have that stellar match.”

Thoughts on his last WWE match: “To me, me and Paul didnt have my last match (as) I think I deserve to have a last match and if I could put someone over, I would be happy to do so. I have a few movies coming up so I’m enjoying working on the Indies as I can work when I want to work.”

The difference between being on a WWE Legends contract as opposed to a TNA contract: “The money (being offered in TNA) was becoming almost global wrestling proportion. My whole thing is, you can offer me $200,000,00 for 10 dates but you own my brand, my name and my name is worth more than $200,000,00 whether I step in the ring or not.”

Stating on Twitter that the WWE Hall Of Fame means “nothing to me”: “I was just emotional as a really close friend of mine got released and then you get this people on Twitter who go on a rant taking about the WWE Hall Of Fame and it’s like, you know what, Randy Savage isn’t in the Hall Of Fame, Rick Rude isn’t in the Hall Of Fame and there is a lot of cash cows that where mentors to me that I wouldn’t comfortable being in the Hall Of Fame in front of them.”

He also discusses Vince Russo garnering too much blame, how the finish to a match is created and how it’s out of the writer’s hands, the creative process at TNA and more. The interview is available here..
