Kurt Angle On Wanting To Return To The Ring In Early 2018, His Storyline With Jason Jordan

Brian Fritz of Between The Ropes recently caught up with WWE Hall of Famer and RAW GM Kurt Angle at the launch party for WWE 2K18 last night.

What is like to be part of WWE 2K18 and what is it like to be back in WWE?

It is an honor to be part of the video game. I’ve never had the opportunity to be a part of it. So, to be the pre-order bonus and to be back in WWE, a year ago I would have said that you are crazy. But here I am standing on the red carpet and talking about the WWE 2K18 video game and I am just happy to be a part of it and am looking forward to the future.

What is like to be the RAW GM and be on the show every week?

I love it. I’ve always loved being around the business, but to be the General Manager of RAW is a huge honor. I still get that feeling that I want to get back in that ring and go at it, so hopefully down the road I take the physical and we get moving in that direction but right now I am very happy being the GM.

There was a bunch of speculation about you returning to the ring, did you ever think that it was going to happen at WWE SummerSlam?

No. There were rumors that were going around that I was going to be in the ring but I know Vince McMahon, he is going to tell me ahead of time just so I’m prepped. And he never did that so I knew I wasn’t going to be a part of it. I’m looking probably early next year, you know, it is all up to Vince. He is making the decisions. He just started a storyline with Jason Jordan and myself. I think a lot of good things are going to come down the road.

What are your thoughts on being part of the Jason Jordan storyline?

I’ve said it before, Vince McMahon has a sense of humor and he is using it at the hands of Kurt Angle. I actually like being a part of anything that is different. When Vince approached me and told me about it, I loved it. I said let’s do this. Anything that separates me from the rest, I am going to do it and he knew that.

Doesn’t Chad Gable look more like your son than Jason Jordan?

I think a lot of people thought that and I think that is why Vince McMahon went the other direction.

  • Bobby Lashley On Alberto El Patron Being Stripped Of GFW World Title, Wrestling Kurt Angle, More

Bobby Lashley On Alberto El Patron Being Stripped Of GFW World Title, Wrestling Kurt Angle, More

Bobby Lashley recently took part in a media conference to promote Thursday’s GFW Destination X special on Pop TV. Lashley talked about various topics including wrestling WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle in his final TNA match and Alberto El Patron being stripped of the GFW World Championship. Here are the highlights:

Wrestling Kurt Angle in his final match in TNA:

“I’ve done a lot of things in wrestling – big pay-per-views all across the world, from WrestleMania to everything else – but I put that match all the way at the top. Not at the top of everything, but I think it’s my top two or three. Reason being, I’ve always looked up to Kurt. I was watching him when I was in high school wrestling and Kurt was winning nationals in college.

When I went to college and was winning national championships, Kurt was winning the World and Olympic championships. I just kind of followed him all the way up. Afterwards, when I was at the Olympic training center, Kurt came to there to do a vignette and Kurt is the one that found me. He said, ‘You ever think about professional wrestling?’ We talked for a little bit and I passed my number on. The rest is history. He’s the one that got me into professional wrestling.

For 12 years I was in pro wrestling, Kurt and I never crossed paths. When I went to WWE, he went to TNA, when I went to TNA, he stepped out and was fighting, he came back and I was out and then I finally came back. This whole time he mentored me along the way, we would always talk to me on the phone and we’d talk about different matches and what to do and he’d just help me out with the politics of wrestling. Actually having an opportunity to wrestle him, towards the end, that was the one thing that I was pulling for so hard. I was telling them ‘if Kurt is getting ready to retire, you gotta get me in the ring with him.’ It was incredible. We had two big matches in each time it was like you were in the ring with your teacher. I like Kurt’s style, I mimic Kurt’s style to a certain extent so to me it was amazing.”

GFW suspending Alberto El Patron and stripping him of the World Championship:

“If we go out there and do something we have to hold ourselves accountable for the things that we do. The company has to do what they have to do. It’s an unfortunate situation. I don’t know all of the details because I try to stay out of that. My business and my contract says for me to be a performer and do that part, not to do any of the backstage or office stuff. The one thing I do know is, who needs the title? That’s me. Give me my title back. I could care less what’s going on with him. I’m just here to compete and now there’s an open title. That’s what I’m focussed on.”

Photos: Kurt Angle & Jason Jordan Embark On Father-Son Media Day In Boston

Earlier this year, one of the hottest storylines on Monday Night RAW was General Manager Kurt Angle’s ‘secret’ that he was keeping under wraps for weeks alongside commentator Corey Graves. It was finally revealed by Angle himself that the secret looming over him the past few weeks was the fact that he discovered he had an illegitimate son from his college days. As for who his son is, it turns out it was none other than former SmackDown Live Tag Team Champ Jason Jordan.

For the past couple of weeks Jordan has been establishing himself as a singles competitor as he attempts to climb his way up the ladder on Monday Nights, however, he claims to want to do it without ‘special treatment’ from his father. RAW will be live from Boston, Massachusetts tonight (Mon. August 14, 2017) and both Angle and Jordan took to Twitter to post photos of their ‘#fatherson’ media day this morning to promote tonight’s show:

Kurt Angle On Staying Sober, SmackDown Star Debuts New Theme Song

    – On Saturday, Kurt Angle celebrated his four year anniversary of remaining sober. Regarding this, the Raw General Manager posted the following on Instagram.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BXeL2ecAxF8/

Angle’s struggle with addiction is well-documented. Prior to the 1996 Summer Olympics, Angle fractured two of his cervical vertebrae but was able to wrestle by receiving Novocaine injections in his neck. Angle eventually became addicted to Vicodin and was taking 65 extra-strength Vicodin pills a day at the height of his addiction. After he moved from WWE to TNA in 2006, he began mixing his medication with alcohol and his life spiraled out of control.

During a Reddit AMA in March, Angle said his wife, Giovanna, threatened to leave him if he didn’t clean himself up.

“[She said], ‘Listen, I love you, but you have had 4 DUI’s already. I love you but I can’t stay with you. I can’t live like this. You pass out every night at 7 o’clock and you don’t spend any time with the kids,’” Angle recalled when asked about his lowest moment.

That’s when Angle realized he had to turn his life around.

“She wanted me,” Angle said. “She wanted the Kurt Angle that she knew. So I decided to check into rehab. That’s where my rock bottom came.”

    – At tonight’s WWE live event in Ottawa, Ontario featuring SmackDown LIVE talent, Baron Corbin came out to a new theme song. You can hear a snippet on WWE’s Snapchat.

    – In John Cena’s latest “Hard Nocks South” video documenting his various workout routines in his gym of the same name, the WWE Superstar increases weight on cleans and squats.

    – Continuing her #GiveEmmaAChance campaign for more television time, Emma asked Raw General Manager Kurt Angle on Twitter what his plan is for her tomorrow night after she was left off last week’s show.

In her tweet, she included a photo of Emma and Jason Jordan action figures, which is in reference to her suggestion two weeks ago on Raw that maybe Angle would give her more opportunities if she dates his son.

Angle responded to Emma’s tweet with the following.

    – Celebrating a birthday today is Reby Hardy, who turns 31 years old. Matt Hardy tweeted this message wishing his wife a happy birthday.

    – Artist Rob Schamberger paints Roman Reigns in the latest edition of WWE Canvas 2 Canvas.

Kurt Angle Talks Brock Lesnar Possibly Leaving WWE (Video), RAW Notes

    – Monday’s RAW took place in show GM Kurt Angle’s hometown of Pittsburgh, and during the opening segment of the show he was interrupted by Paul Heyman and his client Universal Champ Brock Lesnar. Before Heyman left, he threatened that if Lesnar loses the Universal Title at SummerSlam, Lesnar will leave WWE and take Heyman with him. WWE uploaded a video to YouTube after RAW where Angle talks about how big of a loss Lesnar would be for RAW, and he defends his choice of a Fatal Four Way stipulation at SummerSlam.

The Olympic gold medalist added that it felt great to be in his hometown on Monday, and said the feeling reminded him of why he loves the wrestling business.

    – There was no dark main event after Monday’s RAW went off the air, despite a street fight between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar being advertised locally. It was announced that WWE will next return to the PPG Paints Arena in Philly on Thursday, December 28th for a SmackDown brand house show with a pre-sale password of HOLIDAY.

    – WWE’s latest Celebrating Champions video features Special Olympian Justin “JJ” Jones and WWE Ambassador Dana Warrior. JJ and his family were in the crowd at Monday’s RAW and got a standing ovation from the fans.

Kurt Angle On Austin Aries’ WWE Release & Jason Jordan, Baron Corbin Responds To Hater On Twitter

Kurt Angle on Austin Aries being released by WWE, how he was able to show emotion when Jason Jordan was revealed as his son on RAW

WWE Hall of Famer and RAW GM Kurt Angle did a Q&A on his Facebook page yesterday. Angle was asked how he felt about Austin Aries being released from WWE and here was his response:

“I’m sure that neither side was happy. Austin is a very, very talented wrestler. Love his style.”

Angle also responded to fan about how he was able to legitimately break down and cry when Jason Jordan was revealed as his “son” on RAW last week:

“I thought to myself what it would be like to see my son Kody for the first time ever, and didn’t know it for 20 years. I thought if it were real, how would I feel?”

Baron Corbin responds to criticism on Twitter

Baron Corbin responded to fan that suggested that he might cancel his WWE Network subscription because Baron Corbin won the MITB briefcase and Big Cass is getting a push on RAW. Here was his response:

Kodiak Berry now has 32 followers, so mission accomplished I guess. Corbin won the Money in the Bank briefcase last month and that guarantees him a shot at the WWE Championship whenever he wants it. Corbin has been in a feud with Shinsuke Nakamura recently on SmackDown and the two will face off this Sunday at WWE Battleground.

  • News on When Jason Jordan Found Out About Program With Kurt Angle

News on When Jason Jordan Found Out About Program With Kurt Angle

On last week’s episode of WWE Monday Night RAW, it was revealed that General Manager Kurt Angle’s dark secret that has been lingering over him for the past few weeks is the fact that he has a long-lost son that he didn’t know about from a relationship he had during his college days. It was revealed that his son was none other than former SmackDown Live Tag Team Champion Jason Jordan.

Per a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Jordan didn’t find out about his program with Angle until last week. When Jordan was introduced by Angle he was not only referred to as his son, but as the newest member of the RAW brand. This means that the team of American Alpha is now broken up, as Jordan’s partner, Chad Gable, is left behind on SmackDown Live to pursue a singles career.

The Observer also speculated that Jordan being Angle’s son is probably a rib on the former Olympic Gold Medalist’s history of dating African American women. About a decade ago Angle was a part of a storyline in which he stalked Booker T’s wife, Sharmell Sullivan, who he had an infatuation for.

  • Stone Cold Reacts to Jason Jordan – Kurt Angle Storyline

Stone Cold Reacts to Jason Jordan – Kurt Angle Storyline

WWE Hall Of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin has released another episode of his podcast, The Steve Austin Show, in which he and Wade Keller of Pro Wrestling Torch discussed this past week’s episode of Monday Night RAW. Austin and Keller discussed the storyline between RAW General Manager Kurt Angle and now-former SmackDown Live brand member Jason Jordan, as it was revealed that Jordan is Angle’s long-lost son.

Here’s what Austin had to say about the program between Angle and Jordan:

“I like the fact that they are shooting a hell of a big angle. They got a lot of negative response but hey man it was a big-time response seemingly from everybody”

“Big time angle, lot of rub for the kid. He’s a good-looking guy, read about him when I was coming over here to talk to you on the podcast. Outstanding credentials as an amateur. Could possibly have a bright future ahead of him and if it is done off the back of this angle, more power to the kid, good luck to him”

“Is this leading to a betrayal of Kurt’s trust or somebody trying to set him up to oust him from his position? And will it result in Kurt Angle returning to the ring to wrestle at a big-time Pay-Per-View?”

Several matches were set up for next week’s RAW on Monday night. Sasha Banks and Bayley approached RAW GM Kurt Angle backstage and both said that they deserve a shot at Alexa Bliss’ RAW Women’s Championship. Bayley stated that she has defeated Alexa Bliss twice recently and Sasha Banks noted that Bliss got herself counted out to retain the title against her at WWE Great Balls of Fire. Kurt Angle then made a match for next Monday between Banks and Bayley to determine who will face Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam for the RAW Women’s Championship.

Finn Balor faced Elias Samson on Monday night and was looking like he was going to be victorious. The action spilled outside the ring while Balor was in control and Elias Samson grabbed his guitar and bashed Balor in the head with it. The strike was so brutal that he busted Balor’s head open. On next week’s episode of RAW, Balor will look to get his revenge in a No DQ match against Samson.

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins kicked off Monday’s RAW. Ambrose still doesn’t fully trust Rollins as a result of him turning his back on The Shield. Rollins asked Ambrose to get it over with and begged Ambrose to hit him with a chair. Ambrose refused and threw the chair out of the ring. The Miztourage then came down to the ring and beat the hell out of both Rollins and Ambrose with chairs. Later in the show, Ambrose and Rollins had a conversation with RAW GM Kurt Angle backstage. Angle said that they could face any two members of The Miztourage on next week’s RAW. Ambrose said that they wanted to face all three and Angle made the match official. It will be Ambrose & Rollins against The Miz, Bo Dallas & Curtis Axel next week on RAW.

Photo: WWE Hinted at Kurt Angle – Jason Jordan Announcement Before RAW Started

On last night’s (Mon. July 17, 2017) episode of WWE Monday Night RAW, it was announced that the highly-anticipated secret that RAW General Manager Kurt Angle had been hiding for the past few weeks, was that Jason Jordan was his long-lost son.

The former SmackDown Live Tag Team Champ, who served as one half of American Alpha, Jason Jordan will now be part of RAW, while his now-former partner Chad Gable stays on SmackDown Live. While many fans were wondering what the announcement Angle was going to make could be, the WWE actually (intentionally or not) dropped a major hint as to what it was before the show even started.

Jim Ross On Kurt Angle & Jason Jordan Storyline, The Mae Young Classic, Braun Strowman

Jim Ross posted his latest blog earlier today and here are some highlights:

Kurt Angle and Jason Jordan storyline:

“Might just be me but after watching the Renee Young interview, nicely done BTW, with Kurt Angle and his ‘son’ Jason Jordan on the @WWENetwork after RAW, I can easily see where Jordan and  ‘Dad” could be terrific villains down the road.”

    Mae Young Classic:

“Loved being a part of the Mae Young Classic that saw me in  Orlando for six days last week interviewing all 32 women representing 13 countries plus Lita and I called 30 bouts over two nights.  I’ve never been in a pro wresting environment where there was so much natural passion and motivation from the roster whose only agenda was to have great matches and take a giant step forward in building women’s wrestling.

I talk about ‘The Mae’ on this week’s podcast and will share that I never dreamed of how personally impactful this event would become to me until I became immersed in it throughout the interview process on Monday and Tuesday.  I enjoyed working with @AmyDumas and @Madusa_rocks very much. I fed off their passion without question and you will hear it if you listen to our broadcast.

As I understand it, the reason the broadcasts will begin airing August 28 instead of sooner is because the shows need through, post production/editing to add all the elements that are needed with the tournament format and personality profiles, etc. The finals will be live on the WWE Network on Tuesday night September 12 from Las Vegas following SD Live.

I’m guessing that several women will likely earn a WWE contract based on their performances in the tournament.”

    Braun Strowman:

“Based on what I saw Monday night on Raw regarding Braun Strowman, I can easily see WWE going all the way with the giant athlete from North Carolina. A Lesnar-Strowman high level contest down the road is going to make a compelling main event and could elevate Strowman to the rarified air community.

Seems to me, simply by watching as  fan, that when Braun walked away from the ambulance crash of a few weeks ago, that he walked away as a ‘character ‘face’ or a least that’s  how I took it. Bottom line, it will be challenging for many fans to truly dislike this huge man. WWE has done a really nice job building Strowman to his current level.”

Kurt Angle Tells His Secret On RAW, Reveals That Current WWE Superstar Is His Son (Video)

We finally got to find out what Kurt Angle’s secret was tonight on RAW. Angle and Corey Graves have been receiving text messages backstage on recent episodes of RAW. Angle claimed that if this information got out, it would destroy his reputation. Last week on RAW, Angle announced that he would reveal the secret to the WWE Universe tonight. During the beginning of tonight’s episode, Angle was having second thoughts but Corey Graves convinced him that this was the best thing to do.

RAW GM Kurt Angle made his way to the ring to kick off the third hour of RAW. The crowd greeted him with the usual “you suck!” chants as Angle entered the ring. Angle revealed that he dated a woman in college and that the woman gave birth to a baby boy 9 months after their last date. He also stated that the boy was put up for adoption and was taken in by a family that raised him with strong American values.

That boy then grew up with the dream of becoming a WWE Superstar. Angle got emotional and then announced that WWE Superstar Jason Jordan is his son. Jason Jordan then came down to the ring and the two shared a hug.

WWE RAW Results & Live Discussion (7/17)

The July 17th, 2017 edition of WWE RAW aired live from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN on the USA Network.

    – The broadcast kicks off with a video highlighting the Kurt Angle mystery storyline with Corey Graves. It shows clips of Kurt Angle winning the Olympic gold medals, and also getting married, with Angle saying the secret could cost him his career, his marriage, and his kids.

    – Dean Ambrose is out to the ring to kick off RAW, and he’s got a steel chair. Ambrose calls out The Miz, but he gets Seth Rollins instead. Rollins takes issue with Ambrose interfering in his match last week. Ambrose gets in Rollin’ face over his betrayal of him three years ago, and Rollins apologizes. Rollins apologizes a second time and says he’s moved on, and asks what it will take for Ambrose to move on too. Rollins turns his back to Ambrose and tells Ambrose to hit him with the chair to make things even. Ambrose contemplates it, but throws the chair out of the ring instead. Rollins turns to face Ambrose, and The Miz interrupts. Miz comes out to the stage and says Ambrose won’t forgive Rollins, but he also needs Rollins in order to beat Miz. Miz says he’s brought a welcoming party out for them, and with that Miz, Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel surround the ring with steel chairs. The Miztourage gets the better of Rollins and Ambrose with the steel chairs. Miz takes Ambrose outside and throws him into the ring steps, then rolls in the ring. Dallas and Axel hand Rollins over to Miz, and Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale on Rollins into a steel chair. Miz delivers another chair shot to Ambrose at ringside, then The Miztourage leaves with Ambrose and Rollin both laid out.

    – Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss is up next.

    – The Miz is seen backstage walking away from an interviewer and exiting the arena.

Bayley def. Alexa Bliss: This one is a non-title match. Bayley hugs a crying kid at ringside on her way to the ring. Alexa starts things off with a slap to the face, and Alexa answers with a spinebuster into the corner and some knee strikes. Alexa and Bayley trade kids until Bayley drops her with a flying forearm and pummels on her. Nia Jax’s music hits and she makes her way down to the ring to interrupt. Nia comes down to ringside and the distraction leads to Bliss laying out Bayley. Bayley dodges a splash in the corner and comes back with a flying back elbow off the middle rope. Bayley follows up with a back suplex and a leg drop. Bliss rolls outside and Bayley follows. Nia gets in Bayley’s face, which leads to Bliss sneaking around and hitting the cheap shot on Bayley. Bliss takes Bayley back in the ring, then Sasha Banks comes out and drops Nia at ringside. The distraction leads to Bayley hitting the belly to belly suplex on Bliss in the ring for the win. Nia and Alexa head up the ramp together while Bayley and Sasha celebrate in the ring.

    – We go to the announce table where Cole introduces an ESPY Awards highlight reel with clips of John Cena and The Miz at the award show. Corey Graves checks his phone abruptly leaves the table.

    – Kurt Angle is backstage looking nervous with Corey Graves. Angle is having second thoughts about going public tonight, and Graves reminds Angle that we live in the age of social media and the secret will get out anyways. Angle agrees, and says we should hear this from Angle himself. Angle thanks Graves and says his friendship means a lot to Angle and the mystery person.

    – Tozawa is backstage with Titus O’Neil and Apollo Crews. Ariya Daivari interrupts and asks where Tozawa’s honor has gone. Daivari demands a rematch and walks off.

Jack Gallagher & Mustafa Ali def. Brian Kendrick & Drew Gulak: Kendrick looks to start the match, but hten he tags in Gulak before doing anything. Gallagher gets lots of offense in on Gulak early. Gulak breaks free and drops Ali from the apron, then sweeps Gallagher and pummels on him. Gallagher starts mounting a comeback until Kendrick gets the tag. Kendrick immediately goes to work on Gallagher, but Gallagher comes back with a headbutt and tags in Ali. Ali hits the inverted 450 splash on Kendrick for the win after a short match.

    – Enzo Amore is backstage getting ready to come out to the ring.

    – Enzo comes out to the ring with a mic and puts himself over for cutting better promos than Cass. He says Cass being 7 feet tall never wont them any title belts. Enzo says Cass tried to throw him out of is life, but he’s still in it. He shows us a clip from last week’s segment with Cass and Big Show, and says Cass wrote a check he couldn’t cash and he sucks. Enzo says Cass has a foot and 100 pounds on him, but that Cass folded like a lawn chair when someone his own size got in his face. Cass comes out to interrupt with his new entrance music. Cass says Enzo is always running his mouth and hasn’t learned his lesson, so he’s going to beat some sense into Enzo. Cass hits the ring and Enzo runs outside. Enzo hops into the crowd and tells a fan to watch what’s about to happen, then The Big Show’s music hits. Kurt Angle Reveals The One Reason He Almost Never Signed With WWE

After over a decade away from WWE, Kurt Angle has finally returned home where he belongs. The former Olympic Gold Medal winner was brought back back in April as he was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame just prior to WrestleMania 33. Soon after, Vince McMahon officially announced angle as the new General Manager of Monday Night RAW, bringing Angle back to weekly WWE programming once again.

Recently, a WWE Network special entitled WWE 24 – Kurt Angle: Homecoming revealed some of the backstory behind the former WWE Champion and Vince McMahon’s relationship, and how Angle’s entrance into the world of professional wrestling came about. Per Angle, just after his Olympic Gold Medal win in 1996 he was contacted by Vince McMahon for a possible signing. Angle initially turned the contract offer down and almost ruined his chances of ever being a WWE Superstar because he refused to lose to who he was brought up to believe were ‘fake’ wrestlers:

“In 1996, after I won the gold medal, Vince McMahon said he’d like to meet with me. He threw a contract at me right away. It was a 10-year deal. It was more money than I ever saw in my lifetime at that time. I looked at the contract and stared back at Vince and said, ‘Mr. McMahon, thank you for the offer. I hope you know I’m an Olympic gold medalist, so I could never lose.’ I didn’t hear from Vince McMahon after that. I didn’t get it. I didn’t understand what this was. As a kid, I was taught by my brothers and coaches, ‘don’t watch that stuff. It’s fake. You’re real.’ So I never did.”

After a while Angle seemed to have a change of heart and contacted then-head of WWE Talent Relations Jim Ross, who told him the contract offer from he and McMahon’s previous meeting was no longer available but he was more than welcome to come down and try out just like everyone else. Although he almost quite halfway through the first day of training, Angle impressed WWE officials so much he was offered a contract on day three of his tryout.

Despite having dropped the idea of never losing in a WWE ring, Angle still was hesitant when it came to hearing some of Vince McMahon’s ideas for his character:

“I said, ‘look, you’re this hero. At the same time, when we bring you into WWE, you’re going to be a heel, so to speak, because you’re so good. You’ve accomplished so much. You’re above the business. ‘I’m a real wrestler.’” McMahon continued, “and I said, ‘what’s going to happen is people are really going to boo the hell out of you.’ ‘Oh no, Vince, that’s not going to happen.’”

After hearing the negative reception Angle received from not only WWE fans around the world, but fans of his own hometown of Pittsburgh, Angle was finally able to admit McMahon knew what he was talking about:

“I doubted Vince McMahon the whole time. I doubted him from Day One. I said, ‘there’s no way in hell they’re going to boo me. There’s no way in hell they’re going to disrespect me. I’m an Olympic gold medalist. These people are going to love me.’ And he said, ‘no, they’re going to be the opposite.’ And he was right.”

  • Kurt Angle on Which WWE Superstars Have Asked Him For Advice

Kurt Angle on Which WWE Superstars Have Asked Him For Advice

WWE Hall Of Famer and Monday Night RAW General Manager Kurt Angle recently did an interview with the Dallas Observer to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics, including which WWE Superstars have asked him for advice backstage since returning to the company, today’s in-ring action compared to what was going on in the ’00s, and the popularity of the new GLOW series on Netflix. Here’s what he had to say:

Which WWE Superstars have asked him for advice:

“Well, it’s not only the wrestler’s responsibility but also the writing staff. There are guys today that I love. Sami Zayn and the Fashion Police are a couple examples of guys who approached me for advice on how to improve their characters. It’s about taking chances. Rarely do fans approach me and say, ‘I remember the classic match you had against so-and-so.’ Instead, fans usually say to me, ‘I remember that time you drove a milk truck to the ring. Or when you wore a tiny cowboy hat and sang with Stone Cold Steve Austin.’ It’s the moments that the fans love and remember. It goes well beyond just wrestling.”

Difference between today’s in-ring action and what was happening in the ’00s:

“When I started, I was taught to begin each match with lots of action. Very few of our matches began with a traditional wrestling hold. The ‘Attitude Era’ was all about the action. It was big move after big move and lots of punches. Today, the wrestlers in the ring tell a better story. The boys and girls in the locker room can really wrestle and there is a great focus on storytelling and ring psychology. It’s sort of back to basics, but I think it’s a better style. The crowds today aren’t as bloodthirsty as they were back then.”

The rising popularity of Netflix’s GLOW series:

“I would say that GLOW’s popularity had an influence on us having women’s main event matches. But the WWE has been working on their women’s division for years, and we’ve already been leading up to having the girls main event TV shows. A few years ago, WWE made the decision to stop referring to the women wrestlers as ‘Divas.’

“When I was in WWE the first go-round, the women were having bikini pillow fights and it was all about the look of the girl. Now it’s all about their in-ring ability. GLOW is helping bring more attention to wrestling and women’s wrestling in particular. I think people who watch WWE will watch GLOW and vice-versa.”
