The match, which headlined the second night of the two-day wrestling extravaganza, had the audience on their feet throughout.

Cardona, who has been reinventing himself across various promotions since his WWE departure, adds another accolade to his growing collection of championships.

The victory marks a significant milestone in QPW’s history, as the promotion continues to establish itself as the premier wrestling organization in the Middle East.

The match served as the finale to Super Slam III, which featured over 30 international wrestling superstars across 12 matches and 2 nights.

Matt Cardona Makes Surprise Appearance At Impact Wrestling Live, JBL Returns

Matt Cardona has returned to TNA Wrestling.

The company presented a special live episode of its weekly flagship show Impact Wrestling from San Antonio, TX for the first time in eight years this Thursday. The show featured a number of surprise appearances with both NXT stars and free agents making their presence felt.

New TNA World Heavyweight Champion Joe Hendry opened the show. Hendry first cut a promo about his title win before proclaiming that he’ll be a fighting champion and then announced an open challenge for his title on the same night.

TNA’s Director of Authority Santino Marella then came out to announce Hendry’s opponent for the night – Matt Cardona. Cardon a came out with a big smile to end the segment.

The title match main evented the show. Frankie Kazarian who won the Call Your Shot Gauntlet match previously was on the commentary for this bout. Cardona played the typical heel role from the beginning doing things like poking Hendry in the eye and mocking the crowd.

The Indy God accidentally knocked the referee out towards the end of the bout and used the opportunity to low blow the champion. He then went outside to grab the TNA title belt but JBL came out. The WWE Hall of Famer delivered a Closethline from Hell to Cardona, leaving Hendry confused.

Matt Cardona still managed to hit Joe Hendry with the title later on but it didn’t prove to be enough. In the end, the champion delivered the Standing Ovation to retain the title.

It appears that Cardona’s return was a one-night-only affair. Though there was another former champion who returned to the company tonight and announced a new contract with the promotion. You can check out more about it here.

Update On Matt Cardona’s Contract And Health After ROH Final Battle 2024

Matt Cardona is not signed to any wrestling promotion yet.

The 39-year-old made his surprise Ring of Honor debut during the December 5 episode. He immediately started working a program with the ROH Champion Chris Jericho, making many wonder if he had signed a deal with the promotion.

After Jericho made a surprise appearance at a recent GCW show to continue their rivalry, some people wondered if Cardona was actually under a GCW deal and the program between the two WWE alumni was a way for the two companies to mend fences.

Fightful Select is reporting, however, that Matt Cardona is not under contract with AEW or GCW. In case of the latter, the New Jersey-based promotion has not signed people to contracts with the exception of Nick Gage. When asked about his status directly, the Deathmatch King claimed “I’m signed to the major wrestling figure podcast.”

Cardona failed to defeat Jericho for the ROH title at the Final Battle PPV this Friday. He was seen on crutches after being helped to the back due to an ankle injury, but the indie star is hopeful that he’ll be ok.

As of this writing, it’s unknown if Cardona’s current stint will continue following the ROH PPV. Considering the buzz for the ROH title program he generated with Jericho, it seems likely that he’ll be booked again.

Chris Jericho Retains ROH World Title at Final Battle, Bandido Returns

Chris Jericho may have retained his ROH World Championship at ROH Final Battle, but the champ didn’t have much time to celebrate. At Ring of Honor’s latest pay-per-view, Jericho arrived in style to the match, walking out with dancing women to Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York.

The match saw both men trade control, with Big Bill distracting the referee during a pin attempt by Cardona that should have sealed him the win. With the official occupied, Bryan Keith struck Cardona with the title, allowing for Jericho to get the win and retain.

After the match, The Learning Tree continued their assault on Cardona, until the returning Bandido made the save, the culmination of recent vignettes teasing his return. Bandido suffered a wrist injury in June 2023 and after undergoing surgery in July 2023, underwent a second surgery in December 2023.

This return certainly suggests that Bandido will be next in line for a shot at the ROH World Title. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest from Ring of Honor and the reign of Chris Jericho.

Matt Cardona Highlights Chelsea Green’s Struggles After US Title Win

Matt Cardona says he is beyond proud of Chelsea Green.

The female star made history becoming the first-ever Women’s United States Champion at Saturday Night’s Main Event. This opportunity didn’t come easy for Green who had to work hard to get the recognition she deserved for years. She kept at it even after getting released from WWE once in 2021 and finally started becoming a fan favorite after returning to the company in 2023.

The Deathmatch King who married Chelsea Green in 2021, expressed his feelings on her big win in a new video. Matt Cardona said that he can’t put his feelings into words:

“Chelsea Green, new first ever women’s United States champion. Beyond proud of her. I can’t even put into words how proud of her I am. I wish I was there, Long Island. But I’m here, I’m working. She understands that.”

She’s Earned This: Matt Cardona

Cardona who has ample experience of the WWE system himself, highlighted the struggles of his wife through the years. He also thanked Green for paying tribute to his Zack Ryder character during the championship match with Michin:

“I saw this girl, like get rejected from WWE, had to beg for tryouts, then got a job, then got fired, and worked her ass off on the indies, then got back. So, she’s earned this. So, I’m beyond proud. And she wore like one-legged tights, Zack Ryder style. Did the Rough Ryder on Long Island. So, thanks babe, appreciate you.”

Chelsea Green has already declared herself the longest reigning Women’s US Champion and called out a big name to come challenge her. You can check out more about it here.

Matt Cardona Reveals the Flirty Origin of His Iconic WWE Catchphrase

Matt Cardona’s desire to pick up girls at the bar led to him creating his iconic ‘Woo Woo Woo’ catchphrase used during his WWE career. Before he was the ‘Indy God,’ Cardona competed for years as Zack Ryder, and was instantly recognizable with his spiked hair, sunglasses, and chant of ‘Woo Woo Woo, You Know It!’

Speaking to RJ City on the latest episode of Hey! (EW), Cardona shared how the catchphrase came to be.

“It was what I would say to girls in the club. A hot girl [would] walk by and I’d say ‘Woo woo woo.’ It was so annoying and ‘I said I can use this on TV and get it over.’ And look what happened.”

Cardona’s time on the dating scene would eventually lead him to Chelsea Green, and the couple were introduced to one another by Cody and Brandi Rhodes. Cardona and Green married on New Year’s Eve 2021 in Las Vegas, and teamed together on the independents.

Cardona & More React To Chelsea Green’s WWE Women’s U.S. Title Win

With his Woo Woo Woo-ing days behind him, Cardona has reinvented himself as a major player since his WWE release in April 2020. Next week, Cardona will challenge ROH World Champion Chris Jericho at ROH Final Battle 2024. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Matt Cardona as the Indy God continues to prove himself outside of WWE.

Matt Cardona Appears On AEW Rampage As ROH Title Match Looms

‘Indy God’ Matt Cardona made a surprise appearance on AEW Rampage this week ahead of his ROH World Championship showdown with Chris Jericho. In the ring, Jericho declared himself the ‘King of New York’ and dared Cardona, who confronted him on the latest ROH on HonorClub, to meet him face-to-face.

Cardona arrived on the scene, marking his AEW Rampage debut, and spoke of “busting my ass for this opportunity” against the ROH World Champion. Cardona added that he would prove himself by beating Jericho, who retorted by saying “You might be a bigger star now, but you’re still just Zack.”

Jericho slapped Cardona, sparking a brawl that saw Bryan Keith blindside the former Long Island Iced-Z. Jericho whipped his upcoming challenger with the ROH World Title while Keith delivered a shot with a belt buckle.

Cardona and Jericho will collide at ROH Final Battle, which will take place on December 20, from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest from ROH Final Battle including breaking news and live results as Matt Cardona seeks to add another championship to his resume.

Top Indie Star To Challenge Chris Jericho At ROH Final Battle 2024

ROH Final Battle will see Chris Jericho defend the ROH World Championship against one of the independent scene’s very top stars. During the December 4, tapings of ROH on Hobor Club, it was revealed that Matt Cardona will challenge Jericho for the gold.

This marks Cardona’s debut for Ring of Honor, and his first time sharing the ring with Jericho in over eight years. The pair last did battle on the July 4, 2016 episode of WWE Raw, on opposite ends of a 16-Man Tag Team Match in which Cardona’s team would get the win. The pair’s most recent singles match took place on Raw in March that same year, with Cardona once again getting the victory over Y2J.

Cardona has appeared for AEW in the past but opted not to sign with the promotion following his release from WWE in 2020. Instead, the former Long Island Iced-Z has spent the last four years establishing himself as a top-tier name on the independents, though has shown interest in a WWE return.

Chelsea Green Is ‘Patiently Waiting’ For Matt Cardona’s WWE Return

Wrestling Stars Give Big To Help Those Hit By Hurricane Helene

In recent days, Hurricane Helene has ravaged the United States, with at least 125 people losing their lives and many more being affected. Alongside national assistance, individuals have been trying to do what they can to help out, and the world of wrestling is opening its hearts, and its wallets, to those in need.

AEW’s Cash Wheeler has launched a GoFundMe to help those affected by Hurricane Helene which has proven to be a huge success. The fundraiser has already smashed past its original goal of $25,000 USD and at this time, is sitting at over $53,000.

Here are some notable names from wrestling who have pitched in:

  • AEW President Tony Khan – $10,000
  • Chris Jericho – $5,000
  • Nick Massie (aka Nick Jackson) – $2,000
  • Orange Cassidy – $1,500
  • Pamela Martinez (aka Bayley) – $1,250
  • MJF – $1,000
  • Matt Cardona – $500
  • Cezar Bononi – $300

Hurricane Helene has affected several plans in the world of wrestling, with MLW canceling its October 4, event due to the storm. TNA has similarly canceled its upcoming tapings in Spartanburg, South Carolina, that had been scheduled for October 4. CJ Perry’s mother was left stranded due to the storm, as was her father, though Perry has since shared that her mom and dad have now been reunited.

Hurricane Helene has devastated lives, and Wheeler’s GoFundMe will do a lot of good to help those most in need. We here at SEScoops are sending our very best wishes to those affected by Hurricane Helene.

Matt Cardona Is Willing To Die Trying To Win WWE World Title

Matt Cardona is not only considering a return to WWE but also aims to win the top prize of the promotion.

Cardona posted a new video on his YouTube channel, and he reflected on his 2024 so far. He feels that he is yet to hit the prime of his career. While he made appearances for AEW, Cardona is considering a return to WWE.

‘The Indy God,’ who previously wanted to face John Cena, discussed his goals and said that he dreamed of being the top guy. He has always wanted to win the WWE World Championship. The former WWE star said that was his goal. While he might not achieve it, he would die trying. Here is what he said:

“I didn’t dream as a little kid to just be a pro wrestler. I dreamed of being a top guy, the top guy. You have to have that goal to be successful in this business. I’m very fortunate in my career, 20 years, highs and lows. But I never got the big one. I never won the WWE World Title. That has to be the goal. Because if that’s not the goal, what are we doing? What am I doing here? What am I working towards? I might never achieve that goal, but I’m gonna die trying.”

Matt Cardona, formerly known as Zack Ryder, had a decent run with WWE, as he spent well over a decade with the company. However, he was let go from the company as part of the budget cuts in 2020. Since then, Cardona has been thriving in the indie promotions. He has also held titles in NWA, TNA, and GCW. He even wrestled for AEW.

This year, he returned to TNA. He has missed some in-ring action due to torn pec injury but he has since made his comeback to the squared circle.

Matt Cardona Revisits Hugh Jackman Putting Him Over (Exclusive)

Hugh Jackman believes Matt Cardona’s Zack Ryder is greater than Wolverine, but what about PCO?

Fans will find out on August 30 as Cardona will step foot into the ring with the inhuman PCO at TNA Emergence. He’ll be  fighting for the rights to SDL, Stephanie De Lander, whom Cardona called his property. While speaking with Dominic DeAngelo of One True Sport Cardona made clear that he was a little miffed when Steph, his longtime ally, didn’t invite him to the wedding between her and PCO. “That’s why I had to crash it,” he said.

However, if there’s anything Cardona could pull from his past to give him extra reassurance against the French Canadian Frankenstein, it could be from him once crossing paths with the “Canadian Mutant” in Wolverine, aka Hugh Jackman.

Cardona & Hugh: The Original Deadpool & Wolverine

It’s been over ten years since Jackman became the guest host of the September 19 episode of WWE RAW in 2011, but the movie star came to the aid of Matt by slugging Nic Nemeth and helping him get a victory that night.

“He was so cool, man. Hugh Jackman was incredible.”

– Matt Cardona on working with ‘Wolverine’ Hugh Jackman

Cardona said this was just around the time where WWE finally began acknowledging the popularity of his YouTube channel. Jackman pulled all stops out to help Cardona get Ryder over that night and to this day ‘The Indy God’ thank Hugh for digging his claws into the pro wrestling ring.

“I think it took it to a whole another level and he was such a great guy about itHe like wore my headband. Like he didn’t have to wear my headband out there, right?

I was telling him backstage about the YouTube show he asked if he could be on it. He filmed an open for me and the best part, he held up a sign in early in the night, I don’t think he really read the sign, but it said ‘Ryder is greater than Wolverine.’”

Cardona added how happy he’s been for Jackman’s success as Deadpool & Wolverine has been the blockbuster of the summer and the movie has its wrestling ties, featuring Tyler Mane, former WCW wrestler, reprising his role as Sabertooth.

Matt Cardona Talks In-Ring Return, GCW-WWE, John Cena’s Retirement & Chelsea Green’s Success

Matt Cardona made independent pro wrestling his kingdom. “The Indy God” was in the middle of the most successful run of his career until he was sidelined with a torn peck a few months ago. He had surgery, underwent stem cell therapy, and began the rigorous road back to the ring.

While many have sat on the sidelines until they were cleared to perform again, that is not Cardona. The veteran is still making towns, currently serving as the general manager for Game Changer Wrestling. He recently returned to the gym, leaving the question of what’s the latest on when we may see him compete again.

What’s Next for Matt Cardona?

“I’m kind of keeping that close to the vest. I want it to be a surprise or at least the announcement to be a surprise. I know in my head when I’m coming back. But I don’t want the rest of the world to know until it’s time.”

How to Stay Relevant

Cardona is fueled by the motivation to fulfill all the goals he sets for himself. He is constantly moving the goalpost. And if anyone knows the importance of staying in the mix, even without wrestling, it’s the former Zack Ryder.

“In this business, it’s what have you done for me lately,” Cardona said. “You have to chase that buzz and stay relevant, especially on the independents. I knew when I got hurt I had to pivot and readjust. I contacted all the promoters I was working for and told them the deal and my situation and rescheduled the ones who didn’t just want me to trash talk. Luckily, for me, I’m able to come to a lot of these places and just trash talk and sell merchandise…

I’m proud that I’m able to make these towns and provide value to these promoters and these fans with much more than just wrestling inside those ropes. At the same time, trust me, I” ‘m rushing to come back. It’s very important. You can’t let the momentum die.”

Z! True Long Island Story

Cardona knows how to make the most of every situation and the tools available to him. A shining example of this is when he launched the Z! True Long Island Story in 2011. The used the YouTube show as a vehicle to build a connection with the audience. In a lot of ways, what the creator helped blaze a new trail for pro wrestlers. He continues to do that in all facets of the business whether it’s marketing himself, branding, podcast, and business ventures including the successful action figure lines.

“I think what made Zack Ryder successful was the time,” Cardona explained. “If I were to do it now, I feel like I would be anyone else…Writing [the show] the show myself, funding it myself, editing myself. You go back and watch some of those episodes, the editing was atrocious. It’s just me in my iMovie.

That was the charm of the show. That’s what the fans could relate to. Including fans on the journey, ‘Broski of the Week’ videos or ‘Sign of the Week,’ encouraging fans to bring signs and sending out trading cards for people that buy my shirt. This wasn’t done back then. If it happened now, it wouldn’t be as special or important. Anybody can do stuff like that now.”

Chelsea Green

Being on the shelf has also allowed Cardona time to really appreciate the success of his wife Chelsea Green in WWE. The couple shares similar traits when it comes to drive and determination. It’s what has gotten Green respect among peers and fans alike. With GCW doing a show nearby the night before, Cardona was able to witness one of Green’s biggest matches at Money in the Bank firsthand. The alum likes to keep to himself when he goes to WWE shows as to not make it seem like he is angling for a job and to keep the focus on supporting Green.

“Even when she was my girlfriend, I couldn’t believe when she was doing the ‘Hot Mess’ stuff on Impact that WWE didn’t want to hire her. Then I couldn’t believe they fired her. Then I couldn’t believe that in-between at NXT they weren’t using her. I’m glad she now getting the recognition she deserves…

Obviously, super proud of everything, not only what she did in that match, but even if it’s a pretape on SmackDown or falling off a ladder through tables. It’s nice to see the wrestling world giving her the flowers finally I think it’s a matter of time before she gets what she deserves. I hate saying deserves because she would have earned it.”

GCW

Cardona is proud to be part of GCW. He believes the company also deserves proverbial flowers with what the promotion created. Cardona named as one to watch with a bright future.

“GCW is a company I feel I put on the map with that death match with Nick Gage,” he said. “At the same time, they put me on the map with that death match with Nick Gage. The relationship has been mutually beneficial. That match changed my life and career. I owe so much to GCW.

I don’t think GCW gets the credit it deserves. This company is truly an independent company run all over the world and every weekend. I think it’s WWE and GCW. I don’t think any other company runs as much or as consistently here as GCW runs. With WWE, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do stuff with GCW. They already kind of are with the Bloodsport.”

The lifelong pro wrestling fan can even picture a GCW invasion likened to what ECW did on Raw. Laying out the hypothetical booking, “Imagine if Matt Cardona comes down the ramp at Raw and, Joey Janela, Effy, Nick Gage, Steph De Lander, and Mance Warner. Brett Lauderdale could be the new Heyman on commentary. I’m getting goosebumps. Talk about a perfect way for Matt Cardona to make his debut in GCW. You want to talk about moments. That’s a moment.”

John Cena Retiring

Another thing he wants is a match against John Cena, who announced he’ll be retiring in 2025. The two were close for many years with Cena a big advocate for the Long Island broski. This would involve Cardona returning to WWE, but how would all that work?

“He is just a pro’s pro. What a way to go out. What a smart way to go out. A whole year plus because he is hyping it up in July. I’m thinking about the merch. John is such a great guy. Someone who helped me in my career. Those posts I make on social media are not BS. I would love to wrestle John Cena one last time.

I think with the way things with WWE are now, I think it could happen where I could just walk in one day or make a return. I think John Cena versus Zack Ryder was fine. They were what they were. John Cena versus Matt Cardona. That’s where the story is. I could say, ‘John Cena, you’re the reason why my WWE career didn’t take off.’ So many things that we can play into. I know that if I walked through the doors of WWE, surprise or not, I could get a reaction…I’m happy he gets to go out on his own terms.”

Hanging Up His “Indy God” Crown

When Cardona does come back to wrestle, he plans to hang up “The Indy God” hat. He is looking for another change in presentation after feeling he has done it all. The true freelancer will weigh his options, believing he can fit into any wrestling landscape. Alwayz ready isn’t just a catchphrase, but a life mantra. He doesn’t just want to work for peanuts. Cardona is looking for the whole jar.

““There are so many guys in AEW I would love to wrestle,” Cardona said. “There are ones I would love to wrestle for the first time like Kenny Omega. I would love to wrestle MJF. Long Island versus Long Island. Then WWE. WWE is on fire right now. Cody Rhodes, WWE champion. All I’m saying is when he left WWE, he left because Zack Ryder beat Stardust. It sent him out of the company. There are so many potential matchups.

… At the same time, I won’t sacrifice everything I built. If it doesn’t make sense for me to go to WWE or AEW, I will reinvent myself and reinvent the whole god damn independent scene. That’s what I will do. I’m grateful for my time WWE, highs and lows, but I’m not finished left. I have so much left in the tank, body-wise, and creatively. That’s why being injured sucks so bad. It’s also good for me to kind of rethink some things and plan some things out. I’m very excited for the next couple of months to see what happens for me… 2025 will be a fun year for Matt Cardona. We’ll see.”

Matt Cardona Hungry For John Cena Match On WWE Icon’s Farewell Tour

Self-professed ‘Indy God’ Matt Cardona is hoping to step in the ring with John Cena as part of the 16-time WWE World Champion’s impending retirement tour.

At WWE Money in the Bank, Cena shared that 2025 will be his final year in the ring, ending a 23-year wrestling career in WWE. In a recent interview with SE Scoops’ own Scott Fishman, Cardona made it clear he hopes to face John before Cena hangs up his jorts.

“I would love to wrestle John Cena one last time. I think with the way WWE is now, it’s something that could happen where I could just walk in, whether it be for one day, or make a return… Zack Ryder vs. John Cena, those matches were fine. They were what they were. John Cena vs. Matt Cardona, that’s that’s where the story is.”

John Cena’s Retirement

Details are scarce regarding the retirement of John Cena but fans are already excited to see what’s to come. Despite his monumental star power, Cena has said he does not feel he’s in a position where he can make specific requests regarding opponents for his retirement tour.

5 Things We Want From John Cena’s WWE Retirement Tour

John Cena and Matt Cardona

Cena and Cardona (Zack Ryder at the time) became a duo on WWE TV in late 2011 and early 2012 during Cena’s feud with the recently-returned Kane. To get in Cena’s head, Kane repeatedly attacked Ryder and also targeted Zack’s on-screen girlfriend Eve Torres. During an infamous episode of WWE TV, Cena would save Eve from an attack by Kane, only to be kissed by the former Divas Champion. The camera would pivot to reveal Ryder (now in a wheelchair after weeks of attacks) had seen the kiss.

Could Matt Cardona return years later to get revenge on ‘Big Match John’? Given WWE’s willingness to work with others outside the promotion, it certainly seems more possible than ever before.

Matt Cardona is The Latest Wrestler Using Stem Cell Therapy To Deal with Injuries

Matt Cardona is the latest name in wrestling to turn to stem cell therapy to help with his recovery from a torn pectoral injury.

The self-professed Indy-God has been out of action since April 2024 with the injury in question that is expected to keep him away from in-ring action for months. Despite this, Cardona has been appointed the GM of GCW and used his power to make a dramatic change to the GCW World Championship picture.

This week, Cardona took to social media to share an update on his recovery. The former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion revealed that he was undergoing stem cell therapy to help heal his pec. As you can see and hear in the video below though, Cardona hardly enjoyed the treatment.

Stem Cell Therapy in Pro Wrestling

Several notable names in wrestling have been aided with stem cell therapy. This list includes WWE Hall of Famers Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio, and Kevin Nash. This month, MVP shared that he was undergoing stem cell treatment in Mexico and made clear that he isn’t finished in the ring yet.

WWE Superstar Shotzi is also undergoing stem cell therapy which she believes will help her deal with back pain she has been working through for years. Shotzi is currently out with an ACL injury which she says has given her time to focus on her back issues.

In 2019, shortly before his return to the ring, Adam Copeland said he had been looking into stem cell therapy. At the time Copeland was optimistic that he COULD return to the ring within five years but as we all know, he returned far sooner than that 2024 prediction.

GCW General Manager Matt Cardona Strips Blake Christian of GCW World Title

The GCW World Championship reign of Blake Christian has come to a controversial end thanks to GCW General Manager Matt Cardona.

At GCW Take A Picture, Cardona appeared in the ring and spoke about Christian’s title reign. The self-professed Indy God said that Christian was scheduled to defend his title against Joey Janela at GCW Tournament of Survival. That match will not go ahead as Christian would not make the event due to his participation in NJPW Best of Super Juniors.

As Christian would not make his scheduled title defense on June 1, Cardona announced that he had stripped Christian of the gold and that the title is currently vacated. Janela confronted Cardona and said the decision was wrong. Cardona announced that Janela would still get his title shot, but it would be in the Matt Cardona Gauntlet of Survival.

Cardona appeared at GCW Take A Picture in a sling as the former WWE Superstar recently underwent pectoral surgery. Cardona suffered the injury in April 2024 and is expected to keep him out of action for months. Cardona was appointed GCW’s GM in May 2024 and has also been making waves outside of the ring.

GCW Tournament of Survival

The ninth GCW Tournament Of Survival event will take place on Saturday, June 1, from the Showboat Hotel Atlantic City in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Names promoted for the event include Big F’n Joe, Brandon Kirk, Hideyoshi Kamitani, John Wayne Murdoch, Shunma Katsumata, UltraMantis Black, Yuki Ishikawa. The show will be available to watch on Triller TV

Matt Cardona Lands Role in Spaghetti Western, ‘Down The Long River’

Matt Cardona is attached to a movie project that’s currently seeking funding Indiegogo to get made. Down the Long River is described as a grim and violent revenge tale that reimagines the ‘Spaghetti Western‘ genre.

Western is a film genre in which films are set in the American West. Think sheriffs, cowboys, gunslingers, and bounty hunters. Spaghetti Western was a sub-genre of this style. They were produced and directed in Europe primarily by Italians (‘spaghetti’). Their heyday was the mid-late 20th century.

Down the Long River marks Matt Cardona’s feature film debut. The creators commented on him joining the project, saying “his involvement brings a unique charisma and dedicated fanbase to our film.”

Synopsis: In the aftermath of the Civil War, a former Army surgeon, a notorious gang, and a duplicitous Pinkerton agent cross paths in a forgotten river town. With revenge and a fortune in gold at stake, the town is caught in the crossfire.

Cardona Update

As for Matt Cardona’s pro wrestling career, he’s currently sidelined with a torn pec injury which he suffered during a match for Reality of Wrestling on April 13.  He underwent successful surgery that week. In a message posted on social media, he thanked everyone for their support and made it clear the injury won’t stop him from doing what he was born to do

“You can’t kill me… I’m already dead.”

While he’s unable to wrestle, Cardona was recently announced as the new General Manager of Game Changer Wrestling.

More on Down the Long River

The team behind Down the Long River call it a mature, thought-provoking film that ‘examines our relationship with violence and antiheroes.’ It reimagines the classic Western movie tropes while delivering the genre’s beloved elements: horses, gunfights, bounty hunters, and a riverboat loaded with gold. At its core, it’s a dark, human story about the aftermath of violence and how it perpetuates further violence.

In an effort to set the project apart from the usual Western landscapes, it’s set in a river town nestled in a lush forest, which offers a striking visual departure.

Matt Cardona Becomes The New GM of GCW

Matt Cardona is keeping himself busy in a non-wrestling capacity while recovering from a recent injury. He has announced himself as the new General Manager of Game Changer Wrestling (GCW).

The Indy God recently sustained a torn pec injury while competing for Reality of Wrestling last month. He has also undergone surgery and is not expected to return to in-ring action anytime soon.

Cardona kept his word and made a major announcement at GCW Rather You Than Me. He delivered a promo at the show and said that he might not wrestle at the promotion ever again. He said that fans don’t need to call him the Internet Champion or Deathmatch King, but they will have to call him the ‘General Manager of GCW.’

Cardona made his GCW debut in 2021. He soon became the GCW World Champion (first in any promotion) after defeating Nick Gage in a Deathmatch. His last match for the promotion before injury took place in April at GCW Joey Janela’s Spring Break 8 where he defeated Blue Pain.

While Cardona remains away from in-ring action, he has announced that he will still be available to make appearances and autograph signings. He is expected to be on the sidelines for at least six months and that depends on rehab.

A WWE return looming after recovery?

Matt’s wife Chelsea Green made her return to WWE during the 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble match and has been a part of the roster ever since. She has also enjoyed a tag team title reign. There have been speculation that Green’s comeback could play a role in Cardona’s return to WWE. Even the former WWE wrestler has told his fans to never say never regarding his return.

However, he has made it clear that his old gimmick ‘Zack Ryder’ is dead, and if he ever makes a return he won’t be “just another guy on the roster”. Alongside the fans, Chelsea Green is expecting Cardona to make a return to WWE.

Matt Cardona Unyielding After Pec Surgery

Matt Cardona will be out of action for quite some time. He suffered a torn pec injury during a match for Reality of Wrestling on April 13 and recently underwent successful surgery. While the operation went well, fans shouldn’t expect to see him in the ring this year.

‘The Indy God’ shared on Twitter on April 18 that the surgery was a success. He thanked his doctor for repairing him and his wife Chelsea Green for being by his side. Cardona also delivered a defiant message in writing a n

“Surgery done. The road to recovery starts now. Thanks to all who reached out. Thanks to
@ImChelseaGreen
for being by my side. Thanks to
@DarylOsbahrMD(Daryl C. Osbahr, MD) for fixing me. You can’t kill me… I’m already dead,” wrote Cardona.

Matt Cardona After Surgery

Although fans won’t see Cardona compete, he shared on Instagram that he will be available to make appearances and sign autographs. The expectation for a torn pec recovery is that it could take up to six months, according to WebMD’s Shishira Sreenivas. He could be ready to wrestle by the Fall, but it’s unclear currently and depends on his rehab. It’s also worth noting at 38 years old, Cardona may want to make sure he’s at 100 percent before he decides to step back into a ring.

Matt Cardona’s Peers Shares Support After Successful Operation

After Cardona revealed that his torn pec surgery was a success, his wrestling peers expressed positivity toward the announcement. One of the notable supporters was Reality of Wrestling Owner Booker T, who wished him well. Cardona responded to the post on Twitter by sharing that he plans to return to the promotion once he’s healed.

All Elite Wrestling superstar Brian Cage also reacted to Cardona’s successful operation on Instagram and wished he heal well.

“Just heard. Bummed for ya man, but hope you’re on good spirits and heal fast,”wrote Cage.

After completing his torn pec surgery, ‘The Indy God’ will have to focus on making a full recovery. The hope is that he can return potentially late this year and compete against the best on the independent wrestling scene.

Matt Cardona Pulls From Events After Suffering Torn Pectoral Injury

Matt Cardona, the self-professed Indy God, will not be competing on the independent scene or elsewhere for the time being after reportedly suffering a torn pectoral.  He’s set to undergo surgery, which will keep him out of action for the remainder of the year.

This is a huge setback for Cardona who has been on fire since being released from WWE in April 15, 2020. With Zack Ryder deemed ‘dead,’ Cardona has had success as a heel in various promotions and is a former GCW and NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion. Cardona recently reflected on the four-year anniversary of his release.

A Possible WWE Return?

Cardona has done huge things since leaving WWE but he isn’t against making a return to the promotion, under the right circumstances. Matt has made clear that if he was to return, it wouldn’t be as Zack Ryder, and has told fans to “never say never” to seeing him as a WWE Superstar again.

Matt’s wife Chelsea Green knows all about making a successful return to WWE. After being released in April 2021, Green returned as part of the 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble and had a historic run in the match, albeit for the wrong reasons. Green believes that Cardona will return to WWE one day when the time is right.

Matt Cardona ‘Finally Wrestled His Dream Match’ Against Adam Copeland

Matt Cardona made waves on Saturday night when he was the one to answer the “Cope Open,: and ‘The Deathmatch King’ couldn’t have been happier.

AEW Collision kicked off with Adam Copeland opening the canvas to whomever wanted to step up against him and challenge for the TNT Championship. That man was Matt Cardona. Ever since being released by WWE, Cardona has made his hay without any long-term pro wrestling contract and has fully embraced the identity of ‘The Indy God.’ He’s competed everywhere and anywhere not named WWE and that included AEW back in 2020.

Cardona, who first got his big break in WWE as an ‘Edgehead,’ may have came up short in his singles match against Copeland but was extremely grateful for the opportunity to lock up with his former menter. He expressed his gratitude on X, thanking both Copeland and Tony Khan for the opportunity.

Adam Copeland vs. Matt Cardona…my dream match…finally happened last night at #AEWCollision.

When I was in high school, Edge was one of my favorite wrestlers. I’d have matches with him (an invisible version) in my bedroom or trampoline.

Him reinventing himself into the Rated R Superstar made me an even bigger fan of his.

A couple of years later, Brian Myers and I made it to WWE but were drowning as The Major Brothers. We were about be fired. We had an idea to be Adam’s entourage…his Edgeheads. He didn’t need us but we certainly needed him. He took a chance on us, saved our careers, and changed our lives.

We went from sitting in catering about to be fired to wrestling guys like Undertaker, Batista, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, etc. We learned so much from working so close to Adam. Our first time at WrestleMania was being involved in the main event! I thought the next year at WrestleMania it’d be Edge vs. Hawkins vs. Ryder. That didn’t happen. LOL.

16 years (holy shit!) flew by so fast. Adam had to retire due to a neck injury in 2011. My dream match would never happen. Adam returns to WWE in 2020. I get fired from WWE in 2020. My dream match would never happen.

I’ve been busting my ass these past 4 years to reinvent myself. Adam is the Rated R Superstar and I’m the Self Made Superstar. I’ve been everywhere. I’ve wrestled everyone. When Adam joined AEW in 2023, I knew my dream match was back on the table.

Last night in Canada, Adam had the Cope Open…an open challenge for his TNT Championship. I accepted. The fans didn’t forget the history. There was a HOLY SHIT chant on my god damn entrance. I may have lost but I learned even more from Adam from that match. It was a night that I’ll never forget. I finally wrestled my dream match.

Thank you Adam. Thank you Tony Khan for the opportunity.

What’s Next For Matt Cardona?

The ‘Self-Made Superstar’ Matt Cardona has reportedly not signed a deal with AEW and remains a free agent. From Cardona’s post on X, that looks even more evident. Cardona had to readjust his schedule when this match was booked as he was actually scheduled to wrestle at the Squared Circle Expo on Saturday night, but was replaced by Nic Nemeth who wrestled Ultimo Dragon.

Matt Cardona Makes Surprise Collision Debut To Challenge Adam Copeland

Matt Cardona sure is “Alwayz Ready” as ‘The Indy God’ just showed up on AEW Collision to face a man he’ll forever have a connection with.

Cardona was the competitor to answer the call of “The Cope Open” in order to challenge for Adam Copeland’s TNT Championship on Saturday night. The former ‘Edgehead’ was ready to take it to his once-mentor many years ago in the WWE

This is Cardona’s first appearance in AEW since he last competed in the company for a short run in 2020. He was an ally to Cody Rhodes.

Copeland and Cardona battled it out, but it was Adam who came out on top retaining his title. Still the fans certainly got an unexpected treat from the former NWA World Champion who has redefined what it means to be an independent wrestler.

What Is Matt Cardona’s Status With AEW?

With Cardona unexpectedly showing up on AEW Collision, it’s logical to speculate if he may have something more in relation with the company.

Fightful Select is reporting that despite the appearance, Cardona is still very much a free agent and hasn’t signed anything with AEW. Plans for Matt making his way to Collision actually unfolded earlier this week.

Cardona was originally scheduled to defend his Squared Circle Expo Championship on Friday against Ultimo Dragon. To make the Collision appearance happen, he dropped his SCE Title to Nic Nemeth on Friday instead.

Cardona recently told Fightful that there had been very little communication between him and AEW since that last 2020 run.

Mick Foley Dropping Weight & Documenting His Journey Towards One Last Match

Mick Foley aims to have one more match with part of his goal was losing weight in the process and he’s gotten a little help from an old friend in Al Snow.

As of recent, the WWE Hall of Famer has gotten himself involved with Al Snow’s OVW and Foley found a little more than just the squared circle while working with Snow and his talented Ohio Valley Wrestling roster.

In a new Instagram video, Foley revealed that he is receiving help from two OVW talents in cutting weight. Crystal White and Katie Gannon have taken Foley under their workout wing and have assisted ‘The Hardcore Legend’ to drop over 24 pounds.

In the video, Foley talked about he happened to love the Netflix series, Wrestlers, which spotlighted the talent in OVW, prompting Mick to reach out to Snow. Foley wanted to get himself involved with an ongoing storylin and being there is where he met White and Gannon.

One Last Match For Mick Foley

Before he ended his “Foley Is Pod” podcast, Mick Foley happened to drop the bombshell that he planned to shed 100 lbs in order to have one last match and he has a desire to make it a deathmatch. Just turning 60 years old, Foley has been serious in that desire and he’s had several interested parties in obliging him.

Matt Cardona, the self-proclaimed “Deathmatch King”, has made a case as to why he should face the “Three Faces Of Foley,” but fellow WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam also threw his hat in the ring, noting that he was the last WWE Hardcore Champion, but for some reason, Foley has that title in his possession. Despite the fact that RVD and Foley are both ECW legends, the two have never squared off against one another.

Matt Cardona Explains Why He Took A Flaming Table Spot From Paul Walter Hauser

Pro wrestling has seen many celebrities step in to the ring for one reason or another. Those extra eyeballs on the pro wrestling world are always appreciated.

Matt Cardona knows what draws business, as the former Zack Ryder spent years in WWE. He is still going strong on the indies, and a recent run-in with Paul Walter Hauser also backed up his support of involving celebrities in the pro wrestling business. He even took a flaming table spot to prove his point.

Matt Cardona on Celebrities in Pro Wrestling

During a recent Pro Wrestling Revolver event, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray and actor Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai, Cruella) joined forces against Matt Cardona to create a viral moment by sending him through a flaming table.

While speaking to Detroit News, Matt Cardona said of Paul Walter Hauser, “We were on better terms before he put me through a flaming table.”

Cardona also expressed his appreciation for mainstream personalities like Hauser joining the wrestling scene, citing the attention and spotlight they attract. Anything that brings that engagement is okay for the Broski.

“It brings more eyeballs to pro wrestling and it brings more eyeballs to me, and win, lose or draw, I’m all about the attention.”

Matt Cardona is set to appear in Detroit on 3/23 for Game Changer Wrestling’s Role Model event, where he is set to take on AEW star Danhausen. Cardona wants another match against Paul Walter Hauser, and he’s eyeing a showdown in July.

Paul Walter Hauser in Pro Wrestling

Hauser is a lifelong pro wrestling fan. He once said that it is his dream to star in a film based on the Four Horsemen, where he wants to play Arn Anderson. He’s not finished in the ring, either. His next match is set for April 4 in Philadelphia against Sami Callihan in a Philadelphia Street Fight.

Major Bendies is selling a new pro wrestling figure of Paul Walter Hauser, which is available for $28.95. The figure depicts Hauser wearing a singlet, reminiscent of his ring attire at the Wrestling Revolver event, the same one where he sent Matt Cardona through a flaming table. They will only make as many figures as they receive pre-orders, so this is a limited time deal.

The upcoming Paul Walter Hauser action figures are available for pre-order on March 31st, and you may find more information here.

Paul Walter Hauser Beats Matt Cardona with Flaming Table Spot – Next Match Announced

Emmy Award-winning actor Paul Walter Hauser has another accolade to his name after defeating the ‘Indy God’ Matt Cardona at a Wrestling REVOLVER show.

Hauser and Cardona have been at odds for some time, and Hauser even referenced Matt during his Emmy acceptance speech. Not to be outdone, Cardona vowed that he’d shove Hauser’s Emmy where the sun doesn’t shine during their match.

Hauser Beats Cardona

At the Wrestling Revolver Ready or Not event, Hauser got the win over Cardona. The match saw involvement from Cardona’s manager Steph De Lander as well as WWE/TNA Hall of Famer Bully Ray. The finish of the match saw Ray come to the aid of Hauser, who put Cardona through a flaming table to get the win.

What’s Next?

After the match, Hauser cut a promo saying he may work in Hollywood but he comes from the pro wrestling fans of this world. He asked Bully Ray whether he thinks he could hold his own against Sami Callihan.

That brought out the self-professed ‘Death Machine.’ Callihan angrily accepted Hauser’s challenger and said the match would take place during WrestleMania weekend in Philadelphia next month.

The match will be part of a week of festivities surrounding WWE’s annual Showcase of the Immortals. On Friday, April 5, Wrestling REVOLVER will team with House of Glory Wrestling for interpromotional competition. The show will see a title vs. title match pitting House of Glory World Champion Mile Santana against REVOLVER’s Champion Alex Shelley.

Matt Cardona Says A Match With Mick Foley Would Be The Biggest In Independent Wrestling History

Matt Cardona wants a piece of Mick Foley. Not just that, but he wants to be the man to send the Hardcore Legend packing for good.

Before his ‘Foley Is Pod” series ended, Foley legitimately expressed an interest in having one final match and made an added note that he’d like for it to be a deathmatch. Enter “The Deathmatch King” Matt Cardona.

The Indy God has truly set the bar for how to establish oneself on the independent wrestling scene and speaking with Sports Illustrated, Cardona makes the case for him being the man to put an end to Mick Foley’s in-ring career.

“It’s no secret I’ve been politicking for this match. Go back to the Hammerstein ballroom a couple years ago, I was wearing a flannel that said ‘F— Mick Foley’. If he wants a deathmatch, it would only be fitting to have one against the deathmatch king. It would be the biggest match in the history of independent pro wrestling.”

Cardona happens to not be the only star to make a pitch to be Foley’s final opponent.

A fellow WWE Hall Of Famer in Rob Van Dam laid out a compelling case as to why he should face Foley. RVD noted that he and Foley never competed against one another in singles action despite being notable main eventers in ECW. RVD also added that while he was the man to actually retire the WWE Hardcore Championship, Foley happens to have it in his possesion.
