Backstage News On Mauro Ranallo’s Return To WWE, Video Of His NXT Debut Last Night

Mauro Ranallo made his WWE return last night and joined Nigel McGuinness and Percy Watson on the NXT announce team. On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE had been trying to get Ranallo back since around April 20th this year. Mauro’s last appearance on SmackDown was on March 14th. Ranallo left SmackDown because he was dealing with depression and rumored backstage issues with JBL.

Meltzer stated that Ranallo is now on NXT and that “he’s on a show that most of the people that run WWE production don’t go to. So that is kind of the key right there. So he is in a different world, working the Orlando shows and the TakeOvers and not the high pressure shows, so to speak. It is a lot of tapings during the middle of the week”.

Ranallo’s new deal to announce for NXT is a new multi-year contract. Mauro made his NXT debut last night and was introduced as the “Bipolar Rock n Roller!” by Triple H. You can check that out in the video below.

Backstage Update on Mauro Ranallo And WWE’s Relationship

According to a report from Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there’s still a possibility that the WWE could bring back Mauro Ranallo to the SmackDown Live commentary desk. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Ranallo is coming back, however, the issues between the two sides are now considered water under the bridge.

Recently, Ranallo and WWE struck a deal in which the company will continue to pay him until the expiration of his contract on August 12th. If he does decide to return, however, it won’t be anytime soon, as Ranallo recently noted on Twitter that he’s extremely busy as of late:

Mauro Ranallo Parts Ways With WWE, JBL & WWE Issue Statement

Former SmackDown announcer Mauro Ranallo and WWE have officially parted ways. Ranallo informed Newsweek that he is no longer with the company via email.

“WWE and I have mutually agreed to part ways. It has nothing to do with JBL.”

Ranallo has been rumored to have issues with SmackDown announcer JBL during his time with WWE. Ranallo tweeted out the results of him winning “Wrestling Observer Announcer of the Year” award for 2016. JBL then made fun of Ranallo for it during an episode of Bring It To The Table in March. Ranallo went on to miss SmackDown on March 14th and was replaced by Tom Phillips. Ranallo hasn’t been on WWE TV since then and is now officially done with WWE once his contract is up on August 12th, 2017.

WWE issued the following statement to Newsweek about the accusations towards JBL:

“As part of our commitment to creating an inclusive environment, in April 2011, WWE launched our anti-bullying campaign, Be a STAR, which encourages young people to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

“As a publicly traded company, that mantra carries forward in our corporate culture. As such, we fully investigate any allegations of inappropriate behavior including the recent alleged situation with John Layfield (aka JBL), despite no formal complaint having been submitted.”

JBL also issued a statement to Newsweek:

“Admittedly, I took part in locker room pranks that existed within the industry years ago,” Layfield told Newsweek in a statement. “WWE addressed my behavior and I responded accordingly, yet my past is being brought up because of recent unfounded rumors. I apologize if anything I said playing ‘the bad guy’ on a TV show was misconstrued.”

Mauro Ranallo Takes Shot At WWE While Calling MMA Event (Video)

Ranallo Takes Shot At WWE

Mauro Ranallo made his return to commentary over this past weekend and called the Rizin FF 5: Sakura MMA event in Yokohama, Japan. WWE does not allow the term “professional wrestler” on television. WWE prefers that the term “Sports Entertainer” is used to describe it’s performers. Ranallo took a shot at WWE and said the following during the MMA event:

“Professional wrester, and boy does it feel good to be able to use that term again, turned mixed martial artist, the Alpha Female Jazzy Gabert!”

Ranallo is not expected to return to WWE television before his contract expires in August, but he did tweet yesterday that he plans on calling “pro wrestling” in the future.

Finn Balor Concussion Update, Mauro Ranallo To Call Wrestling Again, More

– Finn Balor is in Columbus, Ohio and will be attending tonight’s WWE RAW. According to PWInsider, Balor will undergo another round of medical tests, including an Impact concussion test to see if he can get cleared to wrestle.

Balor suffered a concussion last week on RAW during his match with Jinder Mahal and was pulled from WWE live events over the weekend.

– Former SmackDown Live announcer Mauro Ranallo returned to the commentary booth over the weekend, calling the action for the RIZIN Fighting Federation’s event from Yokohama, Japan. Ranallo thanked fans on Twitter for their ongoing support and vowed to call pro wrestling again.

– WWE posted this video of former ECW Champion Jerry Lynn talking about his recent experience working as a guest trainer at the Performance Center in Orlando:

Another UFC Hall of Famer Calls Out JBL

As a long time respected MMA commentator, Mauro Ranallo has plenty of friends who just so happened to be elite level mixed martial artists. Two of his friends are pioneers in the sport and UFC Hall of Famers: Bas Rutten and Pat Militech. Both fighters have commented on the ongoing JBL bullying accusations, and have stuck up for Mauro.

UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich recently responded to a JBL tweet by basically calling him out.

He also re-tweeted this response from a fan:

Bas Rutten vs. JBL

Another UFC Hall of Famer, Bas Rutten, hosts a podcast with Mauro that unfortunately has been on hiatus since he left Smackdown. Not long after the situation began Rutten let fans know on his Twitter that JBL was responsible.

No word on Bart Gunn’s thoughts on the situation:

Fire Bradshaw Chants At SmackDown, Fan With JBL Bully Sign Ejected (Videos)

Thie controversy surrounding John Bradshaw Layfield allegedly bullying Mauro Ranallo out of WWE is not going away any time soon. Over the past several days, additional mainstream media outlets have picked up the story, including Sports Illustrated and Yahoo. At Tuesday night’s SmackDown Live from Boston, WWE fans made it clear they’re not going to remain silent about JBL’s backstage bullying.

Twitter user @JohnOClock posted this footage of the TD Garden chanting, “Fire Bradshaw” –

Meanwhile, a fan in attendance approached JBL at ringside with a “JBL Bullied Me” sign.

As seen below, the fan was ejected from the arena and received a round of applause from the crowd on his way out.

Moments after SmackDown went on the air, Mauro Ranallo tweeted this message telling fans he’ll be fine and asking them to support the performers who put their bodies on the line week in and week out.

Mauro Ranallo Not Expected To Return To WWE TV

It appears Mauro Ranallo’s days as a WWE announcer are over. According to a report at CBS Sports, Ranallo is not expected to appear on camera for the remainder of his WWE contract, which runs through August 12th, 2017.

Mauro Ranallo has missed the past few weeks of Smackdown and was also absent for Wrestlemania 33. Tom Phillips has served as Ranallo’s replacement during his absence. The first episode of Smackdown Ranallo missed was blamed on travel issues related to a snowstorm. The following week, WWE said he was sick.

Ranallo has been very open about his continuing battle with depression and bipolar disorder. It has been speculated that has been the reason from his absence on Smackdown and Wrestlemania. Mauro has discussed depression and has also made the effort to encourage those that have the same illness to keep fighting.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/850850955285233665

In the weeks following his departure from WWE television, rumors began circulating that backstage bullying by fellow announcer John Bradshaw Layfield contributed to Ranallo’s latest episode. Former WWE ring announcer Justin Roberts’ new book details JBL’s backstage hazing, which JBL has denied.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/850510459866198016

Ranallo is a tremendous talent and his unique brand of commentary will be missed from WWE television. He announced earlier this week that he’s returning to the announcer’s booth later this month, but not for WWE. He’ll be calling the action for Showtime Boxing later this month from the Barclays Center (4/22).

Mauro Ranallo Returning To Showtime Boxing, Posts Cryptic Tweet

Mauro Ranallo will be returning to commentating on April 22nd, just not for WWE. Ranallo will be calling action once again for Showtime Boxing.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/850760044270321664

While Ranallo has deleted all mentions of WWE on his Twitter profile, he did post one ominous tweet which might be a reference to his current situation with the company.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/850510459866198016

Mauro Ranallo Gone From WWE?

There is clearly something going on that neither WWE or Mauro Ranallo are talking about publicly. That Ranallo is ready to go back to work for Showtime, but has not made any statements regarding a return to WWE is significant.

Current speculation is that Ranallo’s departure was JBL-related. Considering the accusations in Justin Roberts’ book recently, this issue is more likely to get bigger than it is to go away.

Mauro Ranallo No Longer Lists WWE on Twitter Profile

Mauro Ranallo fans were quick to notice that WWE is no longer listed on his Twitter profile. Ranallo now only lists that he works for Showtime Boxing, is a mental health advocate and has his “Combat Sports Carousel” podcast with Bas Rutten.

He posted the following quote to Twitter on April 5th:

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/848214724642615296

Ranallo had also posted a tweet thanking people for their support, and mentioned his doctor telling him to stay off social media. That tweet however, seems to have been deleted.

JBL Bullying of Mauro Ranallo

Many are speculating that Ranallo’s sudden absence from WWE is due to hazing from John Bradshaw Layfield. As reported here earlier today, the recently released Justin Roberts book makes some harsh accusation towards JBL regarding bullying.

Update On Mauro Ranallo Missing The Last Two Episodes Of Smackdown

Smackdown Live announcer Mauro Ranallo has broken his silence after disappearing from the public eye for over two weeks.

Mauro Ranallo missed the March 14th episode of SmackDown due to ‘travel issues’ related to a bad snow storm. This week, Tom Phillips mentioned in passing that Ranallo wasn’t there due to illness. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Mauro Ranallo has been out of contact with people he has known for years since March 13th. That is also the date that Ranallo stopped using social media.

Ranallo has suffered with depression since his teenage years and has spoken about his mental health struggles, bravely dubbing himself the Bi-Polar Rock & Roller.

On Thursday night, Mauro Ranallo took to Twitter and thanked fans for their support. He used the hashtags #MentalHealthMonday and #EndTheStigma, indicating that his hiatus was related to depression.

Mauro Ranallo Misses Smackdown Again, Still On Social Media Hiatus

Mauro Ranallo was absent from Smackdown for the second consecutive week. After missing last week’s show due to travel issues related to the big snowstorm in the Northeast United States, WWE says that he was “out sick.”

Silent on Social Media

Ranallo, who is typically very active on social media, has not posted anything on Twitter since March 13th, the day before last week’s SmackDown. He was ridiculed for not making the show by JBL (in a since deleted tweet) as well asformer WWE announcers Taz and Josh Mathews.

Further speculation regarding Ranallo’s absence may have to do with his well-documented battles with bi-polar disorder. Ranallo has been quite open previously about his mental health battles, which have caused him to miss shows in other sports previously.

In addition to being the current Smackdown lead announcer, Ranallo has also called fights for Showtime Boxing, Pride FC, EliteXC and numerous other combat sport organizations. He got his start in wrestling working as a manager in Vancouver’s All-Star Wrestling promotion.

We hope all is well with Mauro Ranallo.

Speculation Regarding Mauro Ranallo’s Future on Smackdown

Mauro Ranallo missed this week’s Smackdown Live, allegedly due to a snowstorm affecting his travel plans. On a recent episode of Wrestling Observer radio however, Dave Meltzer said there’s more to Mauro’s absence than inclement weather, but wouldn’t provide additional details.

Adding to the speculation is that Ranallo, an active social media user, has gone radio silent across his networks for three days. The last tweet he sent out suggested he may miss Smackdown this week.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/841503385786421250

Mauro missing SmackDown due to ‘weather conditions’ caught the attention of two former SmackDown announcers, Taz and Josh Mathews. Both of them expressed disbelief with Mauro’s absence, since they did whatever was necessary to make all shows.

https://twitter.com/OfficialTAZ/status/841822013048139776

Taz also discussed the situation on his radio show:

https://twitter.com/OfficialTAZ/status/842057029023875072

Taz: “You can not miss a show. You can’t. You can’t miss a show. When you miss a show – in no order of preference – you get heat with the locker room, you get heat with your boss, you get heat with your broadcast colleagues. It’s just not a regular job. You are there once a week, and you are making a lot of money with a massive, massive platform. You’ve got to be there. You’ve got to make the shot. No matter what happens. Mauro is from Canada, okay, so he’s well-versed when it comes to weather and snow. People knew the storm was coming for days. You have to prepare yourself to get to that town early.”

JBL responded to Taz’s rant, “Great video” and told Mauro, “I made the show, everyone made the show, everyone. Maybe he shouldn’t have bashed me if he wasn’t going to show up.” That message was later deleted.

JBL also referenced Mauro Ranallo on this week’s Bring It To The Table show, getting ‘hot’ over the fact that Mauro was named  Announcer of the Year by the Wrestling Observer.

The 47-year old Ranallo has a long history of commentating for combat sports. He has called MMA bouts for Pride FC, Strikeforce and EliteXC. Ranallo has called many great boxing matches for Showtime boxing, as well as kickboxing events for Glory. Some believe he is on Dana White’s radar as a potential addition to the UFC commentary team to replace Mike Goldberg.

Mauro Ranallo is one of the best announcers in WWE, so hopefully this blows over and he’s back calling the action from ringside next week.

John Cena Announces New Movie Role, JBL Blocks Co-Worker On Twitter

– John Cena has landed another movie role. Cena posted a video message on Wednesday afternoon announcing his involvement in the film The Wall, which is scheduled to be released on 3/10/2017. The 15-time World Champion will reveal the movie trailer tomorrow afternoon.

– JBL blocked broadcast colleague Mauro Ranallo on Twitter today. As seen below, Mauro re-tweeted a fan comment that knocked JBL for last night’s SmackDown commentary. JBL is no stranger to the block button but this may be the first time he’s blocked a co-worker.

Mauro Ranallo Shuts Down WWE Departure Rumors On Twitter

In light of WWE adding an unprecedented fourth man to the SmackDown announcing team in the form of Tom Phillips, it was natural that rumors would start cropping up about the significance of the change. On Monday morning, SmackDown play-by-play announcer Mauro Ranallo took to Twitter to make it clear up said rumors, which picked up steam after a since-retracted tweet from UpGruv’s Justin LaBar that his contract is about to be up.

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/805767115378663424

https://twitter.com/mauroranallo/status/805776195363209216

Since Phillips was made part of the SmackDown team, his role has been tweaked a bit so as not to be redundant to Ranallo’s. As it stands right now, Phillips has been taking on more of a “host” role instead of being a second play-by-play announcer, staying quiet during matches and primarily speaking to introduce video packages, during on-cameras, and so on. John Layfield and David Otunga continue to fill out the team as heel and babyface color commentators, respectively.

WWE Smackdown & 205 Live Reaction (11/29)

WWE Smackdown (11/29)

This week’s episode of Smackdown kicked off with Renee Young in the ring. Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch joined her in the ring for a contract signing for their Smackdown Women’s Championship match this Sunday at WWE TLC. Alexa Bliss told Renee Young to get out of the ring. Bliss also scolded Renee for her fashion choices. Becky Lynch then compared Alexa to her four year old cousin. Bliss continued to insult Becky Lynch and they both signed the contract. After they both signed it, they brawled in the ring. Lynch hit the Becksplex on Alexa Bliss. Alexa then fought back and shoved Becky through a table off of the turnbuckle.

Reaction: I thought this promo was really good. Becky Lynch can be a bit of adventure on the microphone but tonight she did a good job. Alexa Bliss is excellent on the microphone and her facial expressions are hilarious. I find this feud to be much more interesting than the one between Charlotte and Sasha Banks on Raw.

Dolph Ziggler & Kalisto vs Baron Corbin & The Miz

Corbin dominated the match early and threw Ziggler out of the ring. The Miz was then tagged in and he immediately grabbed a ladder from under the ring. Ziggler got up and connected with a DDT on The Miz outside the ring. Ziggler then hit Corbin with a Superkick. Back in the ring, Ziggler tagged in Kalisto. The Miz hit Kalisto with a boot to the face and dove outside the ring onto Ziggler. Miz then launched Ziggler into the barricade surroinding the ring.

Kalisto then dove onto Corbin outside the ring. Ziggler hit a Superkick on The Miz as he was lying on the ring apron. Maryse shoved the ladder into Ziggler’s face. Kalisto landed the Salida del Sol on The Miz in the ring. Before the referee could count to three, Baron Corbin nailed Kalisto in the back with a chair. The referee then disqualified The Miz and Baron Corbin.

Winners via DQ: Dolph Ziggler & Kalisto

Reaction: This was a quick match but it served a purpose. Ziggler will be facing The Miz in a ladder match for the IC Title on Sunday. Corbin will be squaring off with Kalisto in a chairs match at TLC. Both the ladder and a chair came into play during this match. I like it when things make sense, don’t you?

American Alpha were interviewed backstage about their match tonight versus Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton. Gable and Jordan stated that they will prove again tonight why they are the best team in the WWE.

Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton and Luke Harper were then shown backstage. Orton interrupted Wyatt and questioned Luke Harper. Orton asked Harper if he was going to do what needs to be done tonight against Kane. Harper looked aggravated and Wyatt instructed Harper to go send Kane back to hell. There is obviously some friction between Harper and Orton. I do not believe that Harper is completely sold on Orton joining the Wyatt Family.

Carmella came down to the ring for a match but that never happened. Carmella gave a special message to John Cena. Carmella apologized for what she will do to his girlfriend, Nikki Bella at TLC. Carmella claimed that she was going to rearranged Nikki’s “Bella twins” and her face as well. Nikki Bella came sprinting from backstage and attacked Carmella. The referee seperated them and that allowed Carmella to haul off and slap Nikki in the face. Nikki then got up and continued the assault on Carmella.

Ambrose Asylum w/ Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose introduced James Ellsworth as his first guest on the Ambrose Asylum. An “Ellsworth!” chant broke out amongst the crowd. Ambrose poked fun at Ellsworth’s old wrestling boots. Ellsworth thanked Ambrose for helping him become an official WWE Superstar. Ellsworth stated that if Ambrose ever needed anything he would do it. Ambrose asked Ellsworth to wash his car, do his laundry and pick him up a six-pack and some candy for later.

Ambrose asked Ellsworth who he will be rooting for this Sunday at TLC. Ellsworth stated that it would be an honor to wrestle Dean Ambrose for the WWE World Championship. AJ Styles interrupted the party and stood on the announce table. Styles poked fun at Ellsworth and called him a dummy. Ambrose stated that Styles had then lost to a dummy three times.

Styles got in the ring and claimed that he was tired of Ambrose making him out to be a joke. Styles demanded respect and claimed that he was going to beat the hell out of Ambrose at TLC. Styles dared Ellsworth to show up during his match againt Ambrose at TLC. Ambrose claimed that Styles was weak mentally. Ambrose stated that this Sunday the fun and games were over. Ambrose went on to state that he will recapture the WWE World Championship at TLC.

Styles pushed Ellsworth into Ambrose who fell into a ladder. AJ then whipped Ellsworth into a table and smashed Dean Ambrose with the steel steps. Styles returned to the ring and beatdown Ellsworth. Styles hit Ellsworth with a ladder and then tossed him out of the ring. Ellsworth’s feet got caught up in the bottom rope and Styles hit him with a steel chair. AJ then hit the Styles Clash on Ellsworth off of the steps onto the floor outside the ring.

Reaction: Finally, Styles got the upper hand on Ellsworth and Ambrose. I find Ellsworth to be very entertaining but I’m not really interested in seeing him in the WWE World Championship picture. Having said that, this was a very good promo. There has only been one match in the first hour and fifteen minutes of tonight’s Smackdown. Usually that would annoy me but tonight’s promos have all ended in brawls.

Luke Harper vs Kane

Kane and Harper tied up to begin the match. Kane shoved Harper down and Harper got back up and they locked up again. Harper bounced off of the ropes and hit a couple of shoulder blocks but Kane was not phased. Kane then leveled Harper. Luke Harper got back up and hit Kane with a series of uppercuts. Kane once again shrugged them off and came right back at Harper. Smackdown went to a commercial break with Luke Harper outside the ring with a shocked look on his face.

When Smackdown returned, Harper was in control of the match and had a Chinlock applied to Kane in the center of the ring. Kane battled out of the Chinlock and hit a Jawbreaker. Kane went for a Chokeslam but Harper blocked it and kicked Kane in the head. Harper went for a pinfall but Kane kicked out at two. Kane fought back and connected with a DDT on Harper. Kane followed it up with a Sidewalk Slam and went for a pin but Harper kicked out. Harper battled back and hit Kane with a Dropkick to the ribs. Kane was affected and hunched over in the corner. Harper leaped on him twice and connected with a couple of shots to the ribs. Harper then then climbed to the second turnbuckle and hit Kane with a couple of punches.

Kane fought out of the corner by hitting a Powerbomb on Harper. Kane once again went for the Chokeslam but Harper grabbed the rope. Harper connected with a Sidewalk Slam of his own but Kane kicked out once again. Kane slammed Harper to the mat and climbed to the top rope. Kane went for a Clothesline off of the top rope but Harper ducked it and drilled Kane with a Superkick. Kane once again powered out of the pinfall at two. Harper then climbed to the top rope but Kane got up and punched him in the face. Kane then joined Harper on the turnbuckle and connected with a massive Superplex to Harper.

Both men slowly got back to their feet and began to trade punches. Kane blocked a punch by Harper and grabbed his throat. Kane then connected with a Chokeslam and picked up the victory.

Winner: Kane

Reaction: When you think of Kane versus Luke Harper it doesn’t sound like it would be a good match. This match was actually quite good. The announcers made a comment after the match that Bray Wyatt will not be happy with Luke Harper following this loss to Kane. I’m intrigued with the Wyatt Family storyline right now. It appears that Harper may be on his way out and Orton will be replacing him. I’m curious if this will wind up with Orton turning his back on Bray after he has already destroyed the Wyatt Family from the inside. I do not really know where they are going with this and that is a good thing. Luke Harper has always been one of the more underrated Superstars on the roster. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Intercontinental Championship picture and having a single’s run of his own. Harper can work well with almost any male Superstar on the Smackdown roster. I think if you put him up against someone like Baron Corbin they would put on some very physical and entertaining matches.

Smackdown Tag Team #1 Contenders Match: Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt vs American Alpha

Randy Orton and Jason Jordan started out the match. Jordan went on the offensive to start things off. The WWE cut to Slater and Rhyno watching the match from backstage. This was humorous because the television screen they were watching was black for a second and essentially Slater and Rhyno were staring at nothing.

Bray Wyatt entered the match and Jordan went to jump onto him but Wyatt ducked and Jordan went flying into the ropes. Bray tagged in Orton and he continued the assault on Jordan. Gable tagged himself in and immediately connected with a Crossbody off the top rope on Orton. Gable climbed to the top rope again but Wyatt knocked him to the outside of the ring and Smackdown went to a commercial break.

When Smackdown returned, Wyatt and Gable were in the ring. Wyatt hit Gable with a DDT on the ring apron. Wyatt then went for a pin but Gable kicked out at two. Orton then entered the match and applied a Chinlock to Gable. Orton hit a Powerslam on Gable and once again went for a pinfall but it was unsuccessful. Orton tagged in Wyatt and Gable connected with a Dropkick then sent Bray to the mat. Gable tried to tag in Jordan but Bray got up and punched Jordan off of the ring apron.

Bray mounted Gable on the mat and punched him in the face several times. Orton was tagged back in and propped Gable up on the top rope. Orton connected with a Superplex on Gable. Jason Jordan and Bray Wyatt were then tagged in. Jordan leveled Wyatt with an overhead Belly to Belly Suplex. Chad Gable hit Orton with a Cannonball off of the ring apron. Back in the ring, Jordan hit a German Suplex on Bray Wyatt.

The lights then went out and Luke Harper was ringside. Bray went for the Sister Abigail but Gable prevented it. American Alpha then went for the Grand Amplitude but Orton hit Gable with an RKO out of nowhere. Jordan went to hit Bray with a Spear but Harper pulled Bray out of the way. Wyatt then hit the Sister Abigail on Jordan for the victory. Wyatt and Orton will now face Slater and Rhyno at TLC this Sunday. Slater and Rhyno were interviewed backstage but AJ Styles interrupted. Styles stated that nobody cared about the Tag Team titles. Ambrose then appeared out of nowhere and attacked Styles and Smackdown went off the air.

Reaction: This was a very solid match to close out a good episode of Smackdown. It appears that Harper and Orton are back to getting along for now. Tonight’s episode was promo-heavy but they all were effective. TLC is shaping up to be an exciting show and I cannot wait to watch it on Sunday.

Winners & #1 Contenders For The Smackdown Tag Team Championships: Randy Orton & Bray Wyatt

205 Live (11/29)

Austin Aries and Corey Graves joined Mauro Ranallo on commentary. All of the Superstars on 205 Live were on the entrance ramp and they were introduced to the WWE Universe. A vignette for the Bollywood Boyz was then shown.

Bollywood Boyz vs Drew Gulak & Tony Nese

Harv and Gurv Sihra started out the match on the offensive. Tony Nese was laid out by both of them but was able battle back and tag in Gulak. For the next few minutes, Gulak dominated the match. Nese was tagged back in and he continued the assault on the Bollywood Boyz. Gulak got back into the match and maintained control of the match.

Nese got back in the match and he applied a Chinlock to one of the Bollywood Boyz. Harv battled out of the Chinlock and connected with a Neckbreaker. Harv tagged in Gurv and he hut Gulak with several chops and a kick to the face. The Bollywood Boyz hit a double Superkick on Drew Gulak for the pinfall victory.

Winners: The Bollywood Boyz

Reaction: Not the best way to start off the debut episode of 205 Live. There were some cool spots in this match but overall it was very clunky.

TJ Perkins and Brian Kendrick had a confrontation. Perkins stated that he is still owed a rematch and that he wants Kendrick to retain the Cruiserweight Championship tonight. Perkins wants Kendrick to keep the belt so he can get his rematch and take the title away from him.

https://twitter.com/WWE205Live/status/803801771600580608

Ariya Daivari vs Jack Gallagher

Gallagher started out this match extremely cocky and applied a few submission holds to Daivari while posing for the crowd. Daivari battled back and but Gallagher escaped his Headlock. Gallagher did a handstand on the top turnbuckle and then took Daivari down. Gallagher then tied Daivari up in a knot in the center of the ring and taunted him from the corner. Gallagher then hit him with a running kick and Daivari escaped the knot.

Daivari connected with a Neckbreaker on Gallagher and slapped him in the face a couple of times. Daivari applied a Chinlock but Gallagher fought out of it and connected with a couple of Dropkicks. Gallagher then headbutted Daivari and hit him with a Dropkick in the corner for the victory.

Winner: Jack Gallagher

Reaction: This match was bizarre and entertaining. Jack Gallagher may look ridiculous but he is fun to watch. The main positive to take from this match is that Gallagher was able to get the crowd into it. That is something that has escaped the Cruiserweight division when it is featured on Monday Night Raw.

https://twitter.com/WWE205Live/status/803803266274369537

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Brian Kendrick (c) vs Rich Swann

Kendrick started off the match in control. Swann battled back and hit a Dropkick. Kendrick kicked out of a pinfall and Swann applied a Chinlock. Kendrick reversed the Chinlock into a German Suplex. Kendrick attacked Swann in the corner but Swann fought back and connected with several chops to the chest of Kendrick.

Swann landed a Tiger Bomb on Kendrick and Kendrick rolled out of the ring. Swann followed him out of the ring and hit a Summersault Clothesline off of the barricade. The action returned to the ring and Kendrick connected with another German Suplex. Kendrick then hit a Neckbreaker and Swann’s head hit the top turnbuckle. Swann then fell out of the ring and to the floor.

Swann was able to get back in the ring before the referee counted him out. Kendrick immediately hit him with a Suplex. Kendrick went for the Captain’s Hook but Swann blocked it. Swann then connected with a Michinoku Driver on Kendrick. Swann followed it up with a kick to the face of Kendrick. Swann went for the Standing 450 but Kendrick got his knees up and then locked in the Captain’s Hook.

Swann was able to reach the bottom rope and the crowd cheered him on. Both men were on the top turnbuckle and Kendrick bit Swann’s wrist and hit Sliced Bread. Swann kicked out and the crowd started to chant “this is awesome!”. Swannt connected with three spinning heel kicks in a row and pinned Kendrick for the victory.

After the match, Swann thanked his mother that has passed away and dedicated the match to her. Kendrick was also interviewed on the entrance ramp. Kendrick blamed the loss on TJ Perkins for playing mind games with him earlier in the night. Kendrick also stated that the WWE Universe should not get used to Swann as the Cruiserweight Champion. Kendrick vowed to get his title back and walked away.

Reaction: 205 Live started off slow but picked up momentum and wound up being a pretty decent show. I thought the match between Kendrick and Swann was very good. I hope that the Cruiserweight division gets some more time on Monday Night Raw as a result of this show but I doubt that will be the case. Overall, both Smackdown and 205 Live were good shows tonight.

Heated exchanges have already gone down in social media between the brands, as seen below:

The new show titled “205 Live” will air weekly on the WWE Network, and will feature Mauro Ranallo and Corey Graves on commentary. This Week’s New RAW & SmackDown Sets Are Here To Stay

The WWE Draft and the launch of the New Era brought many production changes to RAW and SmackDown. Each show was updated with new stage setups, opening video packages and on-screen graphics. The overhauls have been met with strong positive feedback, but WWE changed things up again this week with new sets for RAW and SmackDown.

The sets used for Monday’s RAW and Tuesday’s SmackDown Live were variations of the unique set used for Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam, which led to some uncertainty regarding what we’ll see moving forward.

SmackDown announcer Mauro Ranallo set the record straight on Twitter, confirming that WWE will be sticking with the sets used for this week’s RAW and SmackDown.

Mauro Ranallo On What Vince McMahon Is Really Like, Being Compared To J.R.

Mauro Ranallo recently took part in an ‘Ask Me Anything’ on Reddit to promote SmackDown Live where he spoke on being compared to Jim Ross, what it’s like working with Vince McMahon, and more.

When asked about the above video where MMA legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic pranked him, Ranallo said even that wasn’t as intimidating as working with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

“Oh man, with all due respect to Cro Cop, Vince McMahon is an intimidating individual because of the amount of respect he commands because of what he’s done for entertainment, turning the business into a billion dollar success story,” Ranallo answered. “He rarely sleeps, he’s a workaholic, he’s passionate, he loves what he does. Every week I’m inspired by what he puts into his business. From the moment I arrive at the arena, it’s go time. It brings out the best in you because it comes from the top. But in terms of intimidating, Vince McMahon takes the cake for sure.”

Mauro says he’s flattered by comparisons to Hall of Fame announcer Jim Ross, and that he considers J.R. and Gordon Solely to be the best in the business. He says the best announcers are ones who are “committed to the art of communication,” and says he used to volunteer to work for free at radio stations just to get his foot in the door.

Ranallo says what he likes about pro wrestling announcing over other sports is that he can show more of his personality.

“I love the entertainment business, I love sports, I think it allows me to show off more of my character and have fun knowing it’s entertainment as much as athletics,” said of announcing for WWE. “For me it’s the fun and the hype, when it’s done right there’s nothing like it because it takes you on a rollercoaster ride.”
