  • Mick Foley Says WWE Should Revamp The Divas Division This Year

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has posted a new blog on Facebook talking about the state of women’s wrestling in WWE. • Mick Foley Blogs About AJ Lee’s Retirement From WWE

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley posted a blog on Facebook about AJ Lee’s decision to retire from WWE. Foley calls AJ a pioneer and the blueprint for what it takes to be a top Diva in today’s WWE. Here’s what Foley wrote:

“AJ Lee has retired from WWE – and somehow that just doesn’t seem right. I have been talking for a while about a revolution in women’s wrestling – and I really do believe we are on the verge of a new dawn for women’s wrestling. When that new dawn arrives, it would seem only fitting that AJ be allowed to bask in the warmth of the rays she helped make possible.

?#?AJLee? was a pioneer – fighting her way up against all odds in the WWE developmental system, proving that unique talent, heart, and determination were just as important (if not more so) as the physical attributes that were generally accepted as necessary to find a spot near the top of the women’s roster.

The success of AJ Lee, as both a wrestler, and a character were eye-opening for both fans and WWE front office personnel. She proved that big things come in small packages and that both role models and romantic images need not adhere to a one-size-fits-all policy. Surely, she helped pave the way for an anti-diva like Paige – WWE to succeed, and when/if this women’s wrestling revolution materializes, I hope the contributions of the tiny girl from New Jersey with the big dreams and bigger heart will not be forgotten.

Thank you AJ. May health and happiness (and CM Punk) be your partners on whatever new trail you choose to blaze in life.”

  • Update On Who Will Induct Kevin Nash Into The WWE Hall Of Fame

On Monday night, WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley stated on Twitter that he’ll be the person to induct Kevin Nash into the Hall of Fame this Saturday night.

    https://twitter.com/realmickfoley/status/580244461969485824

Foley got a lot of responses from fans, who were under the impression that it would be Shawn Michaels inducting his longtime friend. Foley responded:

    https://twitter.com/realmickfoley/status/580439949075439617

  • Mick Foley Talks About WrestleMania 31 Lineup, Sting Getting People Excited, Axelmania

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley recently appeared on The Shining Wizards podcast to talk about a number of WrestleMania 31 related topics and promote his RAINN raffle. Below are highlights from the interview.

On WrestleMania 31: “I don’t think it’s a lackluster card. I think it’s a card with some question marks. We don’t have the three or four matches that are definitely going to deliver. That’s why I think it’s important that, outside the IC title, which everyone knows is going to be phenomenal, that the matches that otherwise might not be given the chance to shine, like the divas for example… those girls can go. I sense that the wrestling world is ready to accept good female wrestling. I really hope that they’re given the chance, so I’d love to see that one do well. I’m just interested to see the reactions, because Triple H was right when he said this was the reality era. The fans in some ways can make or break three of these matches with the unknowns. When Reigns and Lesnar are in there, can you imagine the crowd breaks for Lesnar? It could be phenomenal, the way they broke for him when he was against The Rock. The Rock was technically the good guy, ya know, years ago. So I think there could be a lot of excitement. It could be a letdown. It’ll be interesting for sure.”

On Sting at WrestleMania: “I thought there was only room on the card for one mystical, mysterious entrance, and that’s Undertaker. So I was really relieved when Sting made an appearance and it was the excited Sting. I think that got people talking.”

On Curtis Axel and Axelmania: “When something gets over with the boys, you know you’re on to something. One win in the right place could really launch Axel.”

  • Mick Foley Talks Jon Stewart’s Recent RAW Appearance, Roman Reigns, WrestleMania 31

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley recently spoke with Scott Fishman of The Miami Herald. Below are highlights of the interview.

On Roman Reigns going to WrestleMania 31: “Even though I was pulling for Daniel Bryan to win the Rumble, as soon as I found out it was going to be Roman Reigns I thought there would be some good possibilities and stories that could go on to make it really interesting. If I was commissioner still I would try to do my best to put the matches and the guys in them over as much as I could. That was always my goal with whatever I did. If there was or is a change of re-balancing of power in the future, I hope they would go with someone who could give the show a different feel. I think those shifts are really important every once in a while.”

On the WWE Intercontinental Championship ladder match at WrestleMania 31: “My oldest son [Dewey] and I were talking about how the championship and how it has become a hot commodity because I think there is an understating that these guys are going to put on a match that is going to be hard for anyone to top. That’s what you need to make a great card. If that’s anything but a classic, I’d be personally disappointed. I’m looking forward to that one. I want to see Sting and Triple H like anyone else. I’m going to go out on a limb here to say there better be a spot for AxelMania because it’s running wild. I’m telling you right now. A pairing of AxelMania down the road with Damien Sandow or Mizdow could be the Mega Powers for the new generation.”

On Jon Stewart’s recent appearance on WWE RAW: “I thought he was great. He is such an incredibly important person in our culture, yet not every one of our fans is familiar with him. They know when someone knows their stuff. The idea that someone who talks to Presidents and world leaders knows every intricate detail of our WWE storylines is really impressive. I thought it was a really good appearance. I thought Seth Rollins was excellent. I thought the low blow coming from a collegiate soccer player was appropriate. I think Jon’s kids will remember his appearance on Raw as being more important than his conversations with presidents.”

  • Triple H Speaks On His Match With Sting At WrestleMania 31, Working With Mick Foley & More

Triple H recently spoke with the Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Snowden to promote his induction into the International Sports Hall Of Fame this weekend. Below are highlights from the interview.

On when it felt like he really made it in WWE: “It’s funny, because it was actually when I was working with Marc Mero that I felt, “OK, clearly they must like me.” Because they had just put a lot of money into bringing Marc Mero in.

I remember George “The Animal” Steele came to me at the TV where Mero made his debut. He worked a dark match and Steele said, “Did we make a mistake bringing this guy in here?” It was just bad.

They put me with him on the road to work with him and get him up to speed. And I thought “if they’re reaching to me to handle this guy and get him going, wow.” It was kind of a confidence boost for me.”

On if he relates to wrestlers today with the same mindset that he had when he was coming up: “As far as the talent goes, when you see somebody who’s really hungry, and talented and has a bright future, you are willing to allow them to spread their wings and try things. And sometimes they are going to make mistakes and you’re going to have to reel them in and control them. And if it gets too bad, you have to really step in.

I have the ability to look at this differently because I went through it. If you’re smart with it, and I think this is how Vince (McMahon) was with us, he allowed us to go through all that without crossing a line that was too much for him. He controlled us but allowed us to expand our wings and grow.

Seth Rollins and I went through a similar thing. He’s so talented, and he was very cocky. Like we were. We were so full of ourselves and thought we knew more than we did. We thought we knew better and were going to show the world.

Some of that is a good thing. You don’t want to squelch that. You want to almost embrace that. But you have to protect those kids from hurting themselves. I could see how much talent Seth Rollins had, but he was manifesting that self-destructively. And I was trying to help him point that in a positive way.

I was trying to help him. And we had to have some pretty stiff conversations about it. We had to get there. But I never tried to hold him back as a talent from growing and trying things. And even using that, using those feelings. If I’m pissing him off and he feels I’m holding him back slightly, use that as a character tool and get that out of him.

He and I have talked about this a lot, from when he was in developmental to today. You have to work with talent no different than you do your kids. You’ve got to let your kids do things and experiment with their lives. And they are going to fall. But you have to be there for when they are really going to cross a line to say “no, not that step.”

On if he feels his matches with Mick Foley helped him to become “The Game”: “Absolutely. And one of the things that working with Mick did, was show people “wow, this guy will go through anything too.” I earned a different level of respect.

I think for Mick and I, through all the different versions of us working together, we’re both trying to prove ourselves. Mick had worked with Undertaker and worked with Shawn (Michaels) and worked with Steve (Austin) when they were the top guys, but he was kind of the guy who was with them. I was a guy trying to come up too.

I remember having a conversation going into the Royal Rumble in 2000, because we were the main event. We were the title match and headlining. It was a big moment for both of us. We both had something to prove that night. It was a step forward. We weren’t working with someone else who was a megastar. We both came alive that night.”

On getting back in the ring to face Sting at WrestleMania 31: “Listen, it’s a lot of pressure. I haven’t wrestled since last year. Sting hasn’t wrestled in God knows how long. We were talking about how I’m getting up there—he’s 10 years older than me.

I don’t know what I’ve got. I don’t know that he knows what he’s got. So, we’re going to see. I guarantee you this though—we will leave it all out there. We’re going to have 75,000 people giving us a lot of motivation to do it.

I know for him, this has kind of been a dream he thought was never going to happen. Both stepping into the WWE ring and going to WrestleMania. I’m glad that we could make it work out for him—and for the WWE Universe.

I think it’s something our fans are really going to enjoy, no matter how it goes physically, just being there and sharing that moment. Witnessing Sting at WrestleMania is huge for them.”

  • Mick Foley Talks About Samoa Joe Possibly Joining WWE

Add WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley to the list of people pushing for WWE to sign Samoa Joe, who parted ways with TNA this week. Foley posted the following message on Facebook earlier today:

    SAMOA JOE IN WWE?

I’d love to see it. A proven commodity given a new surrounding, and possibly a new look could be good for both Joe and ?#?WWE?. I remember running into Triple H and Stephanie McMahon – WWE in an airport in 2004, and mentioning I was on the way to a ?#?RingOfHonor? show. Triple H went out of his way to say that he’d heard that Samoa Joe was a “hell of a worker”. Hopefully Joe will get a chance to show WWE just how impressive he can be in person.

Do you see Joe fitting in with WWE? If so, how? Maybe as a potential Paul Heyman guy?

As noted earlier, Paul Heyman also took notice of Joe’s announcement on Twitter –

  • Mick Foley Tells Vince “You’re Killing Roman Reigns,” Talks Rumble Controversy

Mick Foley recently published a new Facebook blog addressing this year’s Royal Rumble match, Vince McMahon writing Roman Reigns’ promos and more.

    Below is Foley’s latest blog:

    RUMBLE BLUES

Remember how caught up in the ?#?RoyalRumble? I got last year? I sent out that tweet asking whether WWE hated their own audience, smashed a TV set, and texted all the powers that be – telling them how badly I thought they’s messed up. It’s safe to say that I was pretty mad last year.

I’m not worried about this year’s ?#?Wrestlemania?. I can envision a number of scenarios in which Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar can have an epic confrontation. My suggestion to WWE in this match would be to step aside and let the fertile fields of Paul Heyman’s mind run free and allow Lesnar and Reigns to create the most exciting, physical match possible.

No, I’m not worried about Wrestlemania. But I m worried about the Rumble.

I wasn’t mad after this year’s Rumble. Instead, I was sad. Sad, because the Rumble, which has been one of the most entertaining ?#?WWE? events of the year for so long, might just be in danger of becoming “just another show”, and going the way of “Survivor Series” as a good idea that runs it course and ceases to be relevant. I didn’t see this year’s Rumble, and with the exception of the final few minutes I caught on WWE Monday Night Raw, I don’t envision myself doing so. But I didn’t need to see the Rumble or know the outcome to know what a disappointment it was. All I had to do was watch the people. I dropped 3 of my kids off at the Wells Fargo Center at 6:30, and showed up on Broad Street, just a few blocks from the arena at 10:45, just as the crowd was letting out. No one saw me in my vehicle. But I saw them, and could tell, just by the way people were walking- by the way children were dragging their signs, and shuffling slowly, by the way adults held their heads down, with limited verbal interactions – that there was no joy in Philadelphia.

Let me quote a story I wrote about Zack Ryder several months ago here on Facebook, and hope that the right people in WWE read it – because I think they are on the verge of losing some fans in the fallout of the Rumble. It wasn’t just that one of their favorites didn’t win – it was the brevity of their appearances, the lack of imagination in their involvement and the unceremonious way in which they were eliminated.

“Eventually people get tired of finding out that the WWE Superstars they have supported with their cheers, their purchases, their signs, their follows and their likes aren’t real Superstars – and little by little, those fans lose interest in WWE, find other interests, and become former WWE fans.”

I have no intention of becoming the “anti-WWE guy”. I’m going to take a little break from ?#?Raw? and ?#?Smackdown? for the next couple of weeks, and see what the landscape looks like, heading into the next PPV. I really do think WWE is going to turn out a great Mania, and I’ll be in the crowd watching. But I fear for the Rumble. What was once the start of “The Road to Wrestlemania” has now become a roadblock to the good will and excitement needed for a truly memorable Wrestlemania atmosphere.

One more thing. I’ve heard rumors that Mr McMahon is personally writing the recent Roman Reigns promos. If that’s true, I’d like to personally address Mr McMahon.

    Dear Vince,

Please stop – you’re killing the poor guy,

    Sincerely,

    Mick Foley

  • Mick Foley Caught Cheating During Chicken Wing Eating Contest, Foley Comments

In what is humorously being referred to as “wing-gate,” WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley was caught cheating during the “Wing Bowl 23” chicken wing eating contest on Friday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, leading to his being disqualified from the competition.

Foley was caught attempting to stash some of the chicken wings that he was supposed to eat into his fanny pack, as you can see in the photo below, courtesy of TMZ.com.

  • Seth Rollins Reassures Fans, Hall Of Famers Mock Roman Reigns’ Promos

    – With wrestling fans very discouraged with WWE this week, Seth Rollins is reassuring everybody that there is still hope.

    – WWE Hall of Famers Mick Foley and The Iron Sheik are speaking out about Roman Reigns’ promo ability. They tweeted:

  • Five Non-Royal Rumble Matches That Stole The Show

This time of year is always thought of as the “Road to Wrestlemania” and is supposed to be a moment in which a career is made, a legacy is increased, or a hall of fame spot is cemented.  With such a grand prize at the helm, it’s no wonder the Royal Rumble is one of the most anticipated matches of the year.  Between the surprise returns, the elimination teases, the underlying stories, or the sheer number of superstars in the ring at one time, there’s no denying the excitement that the January event brings with it.  This Sunday will host the latest installment of the event, which is sure to thrill, as Seth Rollins joins John Cena and Brock Lesnar in a battle for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.  The build-up for this match thus far has been amazing, with each superstar taking turns to look as good as possible, with Lesnar being the most recent destroyer.

But the best part about the Royal Rumble is that it’s more than just a match; it’s a full-scale event, complete with it’s own card, stories, and unique twists.  In fact, some of the best matches in WWE history took place at this battlefield, and a few times in history, those matches overshadowed the Rumble itself.  When you’re not one of the thirty men in the match, you have to take matters into your own hands.  You have to make sure that the fans don’t forget about you, and you have to make sure that you compete at a level that you may only reach once or twice a year.  Just as Cena, Rollins, and Lesnar look to do this Sunday night, superstars in the past went out there to steal the show, and make sure the Rumble didn’t steal their spotlight.  Let’s take a look at the top-five matches that stole the Royal Rumble.

#5.  Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt, 2014.

What was otherwise a disappointing Royal Rumble was fortunate enough to see one of the best one on one match-ups in Royal Rumble history.  I was lucky enough to be just five rows away from this incredible match when it happened, and even now as I look back on it, it was by far the best live match I have ever seen.  Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt met after weeks and weeks of build-up, which included Bryan joining the Wyatt family for a brief period of time, as well as a series of other strange and unusual situations.  Disappointingly, the overall feud itself mostly fizzled, as Wyatt was not truly portrayed as a cult leader, and Bryan was portrayed as a hero who moved too quickly through the events that unfolded.  The truth was, Bryan being so over made it impossible to capitalize on him becoming a heel in the Wyatt family, so the plug was pulled prematurely, and the feud ended up changing neither man for the better or worse.

While the feud itself may have been sub-par and disappointing, Bryan and Wyatt proved that night that they had chemistry in the ring, and understood each other completely.  It was a match filled with high-risk spots, high-impact moves, and false finishes, and eventually saw Wyatt taking the win.   Some of the best moments included Wyatt nailing the “Sister Abigail” on the barricade, Bryan selling a Wyatt clothesline like a champion, and Bryan nailing a number of suicide dives.

    #4.  Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels, 2004.

A lot of people look back at RAW from 2002-2004 as Triple H’s “reign of terror.”  He was the 2002 Royal Rumble winner, and somewhat exclusively traded World Championships back and forth with Shawn Michaels and others between then and 2005. 2003 also saw the rise of “Evolution”, a group dedicated to keeping Triple H on top of WWE, which took over most of the Monday Night Raw storytelling up until Wrestlemania 21.     Despite Michaels and Triple H being one of the best feuds of all time, this period in history is widely looked at with a negative annotation, usually referred to as “boring” or “predictable.”

However, despite the criticism, there’s no denying that Triple H and Shawn Michaels put on some of the best matches throughout the early 2000’s, and on that list is their Last Man Standing match from the 2004 Royal Rumble.  It was a match that followed months of assaults, abuse, torture, injuries, and bad blood, and led to one of the best Last Man Standing matches of all time.  Michaels and Triple H put each other through hell and back, and then some, and overshadowed not just the Rumble match itself, but the entire event.  (Not to mention, WWE would most likely want you to forget who won that year.)

  • Mick Foley On His Wish For This Year’s Royal Rumble, Bryan vs. Lesnar

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has posted a new blog update on Facebook discussing his “wish” for Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble event. Foley says Daniel Bryan winning the Rumble and going on to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship is the best possible scenario for WWE, and frankly, we couldn’t agree more. Foley wrote:

“Quite simply, I want to see Daniel Bryan win the Rumble, so that Paul Heyman can take the reigns and dazzle us with promos which will make Bryan vs Lesnar the greatest David vs Goliath story in recent memory. The Authority can put their stamp on some other match on the card but I would love to see the WWE World Heavyweight championship be about the GUYS IN THE MATCH- and not about who is in power in the company.”

After returning to action last week for the first time in nearly a year, Foley says Bryan is the perfect underdog opponent to challenge the unstoppable force that is Brock Lesnar.

“At Wrestlemania, I would like to see Daniel Bryan systematically chip away at that wall, knock it down, and give the WWE universe a victory they can savor…and more importantly, look forward to. The best present is the one that sits under the tree, neatly wrapped, ready to be torn into on Christmas Day. There’s no need to overthink it. Tie it up in a bow with a Bryan victory at the Rumble, and let us all start counting down the days until we get to open it.”

  • Mick Foley Talks About His Daughter Getting Into Wrestling, His Worst Injuries

The following are highlights of a new The Monitor interview with WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley:

F: How hard is it to be an independent wrestler verses being part of an association?

MF: Well, I’ll give you an example as far as how I do my shows. If you’re an independent wrestler, your 100 percent responsible. Eh, that’s not even true because at least you have a promoter for every show. But, you have to endear yourself to a new audience every night, an audience that by and large is not familiar with you. So being an independent wrestler is a tough road to travel. In doing these shows on my own, this is a much different experience than traveling with WWE because with WWE there’d be 30 wrestlers on a card and 30 people who ultimately are partially responsible for the feeling you have at the end of the night. When I do my shows, it’s me. If you have a great time it’s probably because I did a great job. If you didn’t have a great time it’s probably because I didn’t do my job well enough. I like the pressure, I do.

F: Speaking of being beaten down, what are some of the worst injuries you’ve endured while wrestling?

MF: The loss of an ear seems dramatic, but all these years later it hasn’t really altered my life much besides not being able to wear sunglasses or put a pencil behind my ear. But knee and back injuries are what make everyday life difficult.

F: How do you feel about your daughter taking interest in pursuing a wrestling career?

MF: Well, I’m a concerned dad, you know, and I don’t want her to go through some of the things I did because it’ll mark you physically and emotionally. But I want to be supportive — I want to support anything she does and the best way to ensure having a falling out with your family is trying to force your will on other grown adults.

F: Any advice for aspiring wrestlers out there?

MF: Yeah, probably stay in school. To quote Apollo Creed, ‘Be a thinker, not a stinker.’ It’s really difficult so the chances and likelihood of actually making it are remote, so anyone really serious about training they should know the realities and be as safe as they can and try to appreciate everything they can while it’s taking place.

  • Mick Foley Blogs About Cesaro & Tyson Kidd, Predicts WWE Tag Team Of The Year

The following is a new blog from WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley’s official Facebook page:

    FUTURE CHAMPIONS!

I know they’ve been teaming up for a few weks, but tonight’s ?#?Smackdown? was the first time I’ve seen Tyson Kidd and Cesaro together as a tag-team, I know this may seem like a premature evaluation, but based soley on this one match, I am going to boldly predict that Kidd and Cesaro will be the ?#?WWE? tag team of the year for 2015. Remember, I’m the guy who boldly predicted that the waves of ?#?SandowMania? were going to one day crash down upon our shores…and so they have! Don’t even try pointing to that double-loss on WWE Monday Night Raw either – because the legend of #SandowMania is going to outlive us all, daddy!

Sure, they were probably just thrown together by creative. But sometimes, that’s how great teams are formed. Just ask Billy Gunn and Road Dogg, who were put together on a whim for the sake of a house show run in 1997, and became one of the most entertaining and successful units in pro-wrestling history.

Given the chance, and some time to gel, I see big things – and great matches – in this team’s future. Holler if you hear me.

  • Mick Foley Blogs On Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan At WM31, Ryback’s Promo On RAW

WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley posted the following blog on his official Facebook page regarding his thoughts on a Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan match at WrestleMania 31, as well as Ryback’s promo from RAW.

LESNAR/BRYAN AT MANIA? I SAY “YES”!

I’m not going to smash any TV sets this January. I’m hoping not to say, write, or tweet things that make my relationship with WWE difficult. But following Daniel Bryan’s emotional speech on WWE Monday Night Raw last night, I think he could be the guy to face Brock Lesnar at this year’s ?#?Wrestlemania?.

As opposed to the earlier Ryback – WWE promo, where Ryback seemed uncomfortable, and in too much of a rush for us to appreciate the substance of the words, Daniel Bryan allowed his emotions to tell the story – reminding us of the journey he’d been on this past year, while not letting us forget what it was about him that made so many of us root for him to begin with. He fights from underneath like few before him ever have, and (despite what some of my colleagues may think) would be a credible threat to knock down the mountain that Lesnar has been built to be. It would be the ultimate David, facing the ultimate Goliath. Man vs Beast. Man vs himself – really no need for Man vs company here. Give Paul Heyman free creative reign to bring out the best in Daniel Bryan – and for the WWE Universe to bring out the best in themselves – and we have got ourselves a compelling Mania main event.
