Mike Tenay has a lot of interest from several promotions. He has had a legendary career in the commentary booth as he has called some of the most iconic moments in both WCW and Impact Wrestling. He retired from the business and hasn’t called a match since 2016.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Tenay has received multiple offers to come out of retirement including from companies such as Major League Wrestling and Game Changer Wrestling. The offers from MLW and GCW were for him to be a commentator.
WWE’s offer was for him to have a role in documentaries. However, Tenay declined all of them, as he is enjoying retirement and has no financial burdens.
Per the report, Tenay has said that while he won’t ever rule out a return to the commentary desk, he hasn’t felt like any of the offers were timed right or were in the right place.
Don West, the long-time partner of Tenay in Impact Wrestling, has been dealing with multiple health issues, including being diagnosed with cancer for the second time.

Former TNA & WCW announcer Mike Tenay recently spoke with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard Blog to promote his Professor Vegas podcast. Here are some highlights of what he said about:
WCW’s Booking:
“When it comes to wrestling booking, I’ve always been a fan of sports-based booking. The wrestling product should be presented as legitimate as possible, with individuals fighting over championships and over issues that resonate with the audience. But there was a time when WCW creative went in a different direction. While I never want to take away the entertainment aspect of pro wrestling, WCW went too far in that direction. If you look at the success these days of the UFC, you’ll see a product very similar to pro wrestling in the pre-sports entertainment era, and it’s no surprise that UFC is so successful with that mindset.”
WCW Shutting Down:
“The nature of the wrestling business is always open for second-guessing. But some of the booking decisions of the late 1990’s certainly hastened the decline of WCW. All of a sudden, WCW couldn’t garner the interest of the mainstream fans like it did in 1996 and ’97, and soon after, so went the company.”
If He Would Return To TNA:
“That hasn’t been discussed with me. I think it’s great that TNA, in a very competitive time, found that outlet for Impact Wrestling. There is an absolutely terrific group of very talented people who still have the ability to apply their trade and make a living because of that, and it’s fantastic for everybody involved.”

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated his official blog section with his latest thoughts and opinions. Below are some of the highlights from the update.
On getting a job as an announcer or referee in WWE: “One would go about getting a TV job at WWE just like any other broadcast entity. They seem to require a college degree in the field now and some outside the wrestling business experience so that candidates can build a reel.”
On Scott Hall or Bobby Heenan on The Ross Report: “Scott and I have discussed him coming on the Ross Report and I’m sure that we will some day. Heenan would be a great one, obviously, under more positive circumstances. I’m lucky in that I have no shortage of guests and our podcast is growing every week.”
On memories of Roddy Piper: “Just building a relationship with him after we had both been in the business many years before ever meeting. I enjoyed talking about a variety of things with Roddy. He was unique and will be missed.’
On if WWE will be able to pull off a four-hour SummerSlam show: “Yes, to varying degrees but some won’t be too through or deep. There is one match at Summer Slam that will sell the show and that is Taker vs. Lesnar and the rest is support material with the exception of a potential Rollins Vs Cena title vs. title match.”
On why WWE has never hired Mike Tenay: “That would hae been a TV department decision and one that I would not have been in the loop for whatsoever. Mike could have helped WWE in many ways especially now with the WWE Network.”

Longtime TNA announcer Mike Tenay recently appeared as a guest on The In The Room podcast to discuss a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.
On uncertainty in TNA over the years: “There was the chance, when we got going, to take this to another level. But realistically, when you look back at the fact that we were – in terms of the wrestling business model – doing it completely backwards. We were running a pay-per-view show without having the regular television show to drive people to the pay-per-view … You look at that business model and you just say “How the heck could that thing succeed?” Fortunately, even after a little stumble after the first couple of months, we received the new investors: the Carter family got involved. They were able to keep us going in that environment … In spite of all [the] negatives, we were able to attract Spike TV. Gosh, if you look back, you would have to say it was a long shot for a company that started off as just a pay-per-view company, for a company that had had its obituary written on many, many occasions. It’s one of those things that we think about every year at the anniversary time and it’s definitely one of the things that I was thinking about this past week and this past weekend, when we celebrated our 13th year in business, which is just amazing.”
On TNA bringing former WWE stars vs. bringing in experienced indie wrestling talent: “Obviously you’re going to need a mix, going forward. That’s the first thing that you have to think about. I don’t think it’s great to have a roster that’s overloaded with veterans, and I think at the same time it’s very difficult to start with a group of independent names that haven’t really achieved a lot on the national stage. The perfect mix, and as I look and see what we’ve done in the past year plus, I don’t think that TNA gets enough credit. The fact that we’re able to maintain a roster of the established people … and what we’ve been able to do in terms of bringing new young talent to the forefront … and combining them in an effort where you have, obviously, the veterans there to give the rub to that new young talent, which you’re always going to have to do.”

– TNA just wrapped up several nights of Impact Wrestling tapings from Orlando, with spoiler results from all the shows available at our TNA News section. The following are highlights of the latest blog by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:
On Mike Tenay and TNA rumors: “Read online where I allegedly called and talked to Impact Wrestling officials attempting to get my friend Mike Tenay as my broadcast partner for Wrestle Kingdom 9. What was reported on the internet was leaked, and not by me, and largely erroneous. I texted TNA saying that it would be great exposure for the voice of their brand and that we could talk about Impact’s launch to a new network coming up later that week. Obviously, I would have treated Mike with the utmost respect but TNA brass declined the invite. That’s the truth of the matter. It’s a dead issue and no hard feelings but I can’t see the downside of Mike Tenay and I broadcasting the NJPW PPV as it relates to Impact Wrestling specifically as it relates to me. Nonetheless it’s not happening and Global Force Wrestling moves on to the next candidate of which there are some good ones.”
On the WWE TLC pay-per-view main event: “I hope that Ambrose vs. Wyatt closes the show in their TLC Main Event as I feel it sends a positive message to the locker room, the fan base and all involved. I do expect some viable surprises during the show which should build momentum for January’s new subscribers or renewals especially with the Royal Rumble included for, yes, you’ve got it, $9.99.”
On who his broadcast partner will be for Wrestle Kingdom 9: “Still no word on who will work with me broadcasting the Wrestle Kingdom 9 PPV from Tokyo on January 4 but I’m told that we are getting closer. This is an epic assignment as the event is four hours long, is a helluva flight from Oklahoma to Tokyo, and it features many talents that I’ve never seen wrestle in person but have spends hours watching their matches and reading about them. This assignment will be one of the more challenging that I’ve ever had in my career but I couldn’t be more excited. I love the challenge of delivering the goods and overcoming language issues, long travel and working with an all new TV crew who mostly does not understand English from what I’m told.”

BACKSTAGE NEWS: Main WWE Roster Concerned Over Being Out-Done By NXT Roster …
Posted December 14th, 2014 in News, TNA, WWE. Tagged: Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, Mike Tenay, TLC.
Mike Tenay will be staying with TNA for another year, but he’ll no longer be the lead announcer for Impact Wrestling when it moves to Destination America next month.
Josh Matthews will be taking over as the lead announcer for Impact Wrestling, with Tenay sticking around as an on air correspondent. Tenay recently signed a new 1-year contract with TNA, which some people are viewing as a sign that Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling does not have a TNA deal in place.
Tenay was interested in joining Jim Ross in calling the January 4th New Japan Pro Wrestling Kingdom 9 PPV from Tokyo Japan. Jim Ross called TNA’s John Gaburick (and is rumored to have spoken to Dixie Carter as well) about getting approval for Tenay to work Wrestle Kingdom 9. Ross pitched the idea of plugging TNA on the show in exchange for approval to use Tenay, but they turned him down.

As we have noted in the past, when TNA makes the move from Spike TV to Destination America in January, it is expected that former WWE announcer Josh Mathews will be replacing Mike Tenay as the play-by-play man for Impact Wrestling.
This news has since been pretty much confirmed on Twitter by both Mathews and Taz. Below are some of the recent tweets about the subject.
HUGE Update On Backstage Reaction To CM Punk Interview w/ Very DETAILED & SPECIFIC Stories
Posted December 5th, 2014 in News, TNA. Tagged: Josh Mathews, Mike Tenay, Taz.
As reported earlier this week, longtime TNA announcer Mike Tenay is expected to be replaced by former WWE broadcast team member Josh Mathews once the company officially launches on Destination America in January.
Internally, the move has been expected for a while, as Tenay lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has to be flown to TNA events while Mathews is based out of TNA Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee.
For those wondering, Tenay is expected to remain employed by TNA and will be used on television in a different capacity.
Regarding TNA’s new television deal with Destination America, it is said that TNA now has less money to work with in their company budget and some additional cost-cutting measures are expected to be taking place in the near future.

As we have noted in the past, TNA is planning on a complete and total overhaul for the company when they officially relaunch their promotion during their Impact Wrestling television debut on their new cable home — Destination America — in January.
One of the major changes in terms of television presentation is the way the company plans to handle their announce team.
It’s believed that the longtime commentary team of Mike Tenay and Taz will cease to exist when TNA launches of Destination America, as one source claims the “new and improved” TNA will be going with a two-man announcing team that will consist of Taz and former WWE announcer Josh Mathews.
As far as Mike Tenay is concerned, it is believed that he will still remain in an on-air role in some capacity.

The reason TNA is letting Wrestle-1 handle a lot of the work for this year’s Bound For Glory show is said to be part of a money-saving deal that Jeff Jarrett put together when he was still with the company.
TNA will only have to cover the travel costs for their talent, as well as their pay for the event. Wrestle-1 will be handling the production and will air a television show in Japan with the idea that they are presenting the biggest TNA event of the year.
Wrestle-1 will then transmit the Bound For Glory tape to TNA headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, where Mike Tenay and Taz will do the voice-over work for the U.S. broadcast. The pay-per-view itself will air that night in its’ normal 8pm EST. time slot.

– Early ticket sales for TNA Bound For Glory in Tokyo, Japan are said to be encouraging.
– Due to the fact that TNA Bound For Glory will be airing in the United States several hours after it happens n Japan, there is talk that the show may be taped and transmitted to TNA’s Nashville studios with just the crowd sound. There is also a good chance that Mike Tenay and Taz will end up doing voice-overs from Nashville as a cost-cutting measure.
– Sanada is still using the name Seiya Sanada when working for the Wrestle-1 promotion in Japan, as opposed to The Great Sanada name he’s been using in TNA. With no TNA dates on the schedule for October, Sanada will be remaining in Japan to work after next week’s TNA tapings in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The following are highlights from a new online blog by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:
On Batista’s WWE return: “Good to hear WWE talk of Batista’s return on January 20. Dave is a major player and WWE has the opportunity to capitalize on his established reputation and accomplishments. Hopefully, there is a long term, strategic plan for ‘The Animal’ that has been established.”
On Daniel Bryan, Goldust, Cody Rhodes and The Wyatt Family: “6 man tag with Rhodes Brothers and Daniel Bryan vs. the Wyatt Family seemingly did what it was supposed to do. Reasons the match worked…there is an established story and the talents had the ring time to tell said story. No fan favorites are executing better in WWE, IMO, than the Rhodes boys and Bryan.”
On TNA and three-man announce teams: “On a recent interview, I mentioned that one of the reasons that I had no interest in going to TNA was that I had no desire in affecting the chemistry of broadcasters Mike Tenay and Taz. Yes, a three man booth would obviously be possible but I’m not a big fan of three man announce teams in pro wrestling, as a rule. Mike and Taz do a great job especially when they are on point calling holds, near falls, etc and keeping a ‘sports feel’ on the in ring action. They certainly don’t need me. I did enjoy the three man announce team of McMahon, King, and me back in the day. It’s good having the boss sitting right next to you as it helps greatly with communication and creative direction. In those days, a quick huddle, so to speak, during commercial breaks was timely and efficient. With that said and as I’ve mentioned here before, I see my broadcasting days in pro wrestling aka sports entertainment as history. It’s time to do other things that interest me and my style of play by play really doesn’t fit in today’s genre.”
On Wade Barrett: “I’d still like to see William Regal associated with “Bad News” Barrett, in some manner, of whose new, TV persona I haven’t quite understood as of yet. I applaud Barrett getting some TV time because that’s where it all starts and am anxious to see where his creative journey takes him. The talented Brit has a marketable upside, IMO.”
