WWE Mixed Match Challenge (2/13): Elias & Bayley vs. Rusev & Lana

Elias and Bayley performed a song but were interrupted by Rusev and Lana, who came down to the ring wearing matching outfits.

Lana and Bayley started off the match. Bayley connected with a few Arm Drags and schooled Lana for a minute. Lana backed away and went over to have a chat with Rusev. Lana then stormed out of the corner and tackled Bayley. Rusev and Lana went outside the ring and taunted Elias with his guitar.

Elias got frustrated and tagged himself in. The crowd broke out in “Rusev Day!” chants as Rusev got into the ring. Rusev connected with a boot to the face and went for the Accolade but Elias escaped and tagged Bayley back in.

Lana once again went on the attack and connected with a Facebuster for a two count. Lana controlled the match for a couple of minutes but Bayley eventually made a comeback. Bayley sent Lana to the corner, tightened her ponytail and then played air guitar. Bayley went for a Bayley to Belly off the top and Rusev tried to prevent it. Elias connected with a running knee to Rusev, but during that time Lana escaped and knocked Bayley off the ropes. Lana then pinned Bayley and won the match.

After the match, Michael Cole announced that it was the first match that Lana has ever won. Bobby Roode & Charlotte will face Apollo Crews & Nia Jax next week in the Mixed Match Challenge tournament.

WWE Wishes Victoria A Happy Birthday, Maria’s Latest Pregnancy Vlog, Bayley and Elias

– Perhaps the most notable omission from the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble Match was that of two-time WWE Women’s Champion Victoria, who unlike many of the former female stars brought back, remains active on the independent wrestling scene. She was also not at Raw 25, which featured a segment honoring the company’s top female performers over the years. Former WWE Women’s Champion Gail Kim called out WWE on not inviting Victoria and Lita to the show (Lita did, however, work the Women’s Royal Rumble Match).

As today is Victoria’s 47th birthday, WWE is now celebrating her career. The company posted these messages on social media wishing her a happy birthday.

The official WWE website also posted this photo gallery looking back at her career.

WWE Mixed Match Challenge (2/6): Goldust & Mandy Rose vs. Jimmy Uso & Naomi

Daniel Bryan was voted as the special referee for the match over Kurt Angle. Bryan came down to the ring sporting an interesting ponytail.

https://twitter.com/BulletClubItal/status/961074375100420096

Jimmy Uso and Goldust started off the match. Uso controlled the match early and Goldust asked for a break to catch his breath. Mandy Rose called Goldust over to the corner of the ring and gave him a smooch on his hand. Jimmy and Naomi do the same and then hug.

Naomi and Mandy Rose tagged in. Rose knocked Naomi to the corner and connected with a Facebuster. Mandy shoved her boot into Naomi’s throat in the corner of the ring. Mandy took a break to admire her work and Naomi took advantage and booted Mandy in the midsection.

Naomi tried to tag out but Mandy Rose prevented it and then slapped Jimmy Uso in the face. Naomi was finally able to tag out and Jimmy and Goldust entered the ring. Jimmy planted Goldust with a Samoan Drop and went for the cover but Mandy Rose broke it up. Naomi and Jimmy then hit Mandy & Goldust with dueling Enziguris and followed them up with a pair of Powerslams.

Goldust connected with the Final Cut but Naomi broke up the cover. Mandy slapped Naomi in the face and Naomi chased her around the ring. Mandy hid behind Goldust but Naomi leaped over him and connected with a Crossbody to Rose. Back in the ring, Jimmy delivered a Superkick to Goldust. Naomi hit the Rear View on Goldust and Jimmy followed it up with a Frog Splash for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Rusev and Lana came down to the entrance ramp with a couple of microphones. The crowd chanted “Rusev Day!”. Rusev said that Jimmy Uso are not the best couple in WWE. Rusev started singing “Lana is the best, Lana number one”. The crowd sang along as Lana vowed to crush Elias & Bayley next week on the Mixed Match Challenge. Lana added that next week they will celebrate “the ravishing Rusev Day”.

Elias and Bayley had a backstage promo. Bayley started to sing as Elias played his guitar and Elias told her to leave the music to him. Bayley asked if she could at least have a hug and Elias responded “no” and walked away. Jimmy and Naomi danced in the ring as the Mixed Match Challenge walked away. Goldust & Mandy Rose are now eliminated and Jimmy Uso & Naomi advanced to the next round of the tournament.

WWE Unhappy With Mixed Match Challenge Viewership, Trish Stratus Talks Royal Rumble

– WWE officials have soured on Mixed Match Challenge on Facebook Watch, according to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. They were ‘very unhappy’ with the decline in viewership in Week 2, which for the live show, dropped about 32% from the premiere episode (from a peak of about 132,600 viewers for Week 1 to 92,000 for Week 2).

There was an even steeper live viewership drop during Week 3, which saw Braun Strowman and Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss beat Sami Zayn and Becky Lynch. The show peaked at around 62,400 viewers, a decline of 54% from the premiere episode and 32% from Week 2.

Despite the decline in live viewership, the number of total views has not dropped as much percentage-wise from Week 1. Thus far, the premiere episode has drawn 1.9 million views after 18 days (Finn Balor and Sasha Banks vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Natalya), Week 2 has drawn 1.7 million views after 11 days (The Miz and Asuka vs. Big E and Carmella), and Week 3 has drawn 1.6 million views after 4 days.

– Last Sunday at the Royal Rumble event, Trish Stratus made her surprise in-ring return as the 30th and final entrant in the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble Match. The WWE Hall of Famer eliminated three competitors (Nia Jax, Mickie James, and Natalya) before getting tossed out by Sasha Banks. Stratus lasted in the match for over five minutes.

WWE Mixed Match Challenge (1/23): The Miz & Asuka vs. Big E & Carmella

The Miz & Asuka faced Big E & Carmella tonight in the Mixed Match Challenge on Facebook Watch.

Big E controlled The Miz early and locked him in the Abdominal Stretch. Big E had some fun and started to spank The Miz. The Miz battled back as the crowd chanted for Asuka to get in the match.

Asuka tagged in and that meant Carmella had to get in the match. Carmella didn’t seem too excited to be getting into the ring with Asuka. Big E grabbed an “L” and told Carmella to go give it to Asuka. Asuka seemed to be thankful for the gift at first but then ripped it up in anger. Carmella tagged out of the match out of fear and Big E and The Miz got back into the ring.

Big E connected with a flurry of Belly to Belly Suplexes. Asuka and Miz regained controlled and teamed up to hit a bunch of It Kicks on Carmella and Big E. Big E caught The Miz’s final kick and slammed him to the canvas. Miz shrugged it off and booted Big E in the face. Big E went for a Splash in the corner but Miz was able to get out of the way at the last second.

Asuka tagged in and walked into a big kick from Carmella. Asuka quickly battled back and locked in the Asuka Lock for the submission victory. The Miz & Asuka advanced in the Mixed Match Challenge and Big E & Carmella are now eliminated.

Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss will face Sami Zayn & Becky Lynch next week.

Finn Balor and Sasha Banks faced Shinsuke Nakamura and Natalya in the Mixed Match Challenge tonight on Facebook Watch.

Natalya beatdown Sasha Banks for the majority of the beginning of the match. Sasha finally was able to tag in Finn Balor and that meant that Shinsuke Nakamura had to enter the match.

Nakamura slammed Balor face-first into the mat and geared up for the Kinshasa but Finn was able to counter it into a Slingblade. Balor followed it up with a Dropkick and climbed to the top rop for the Coup de Grace. Natalya shoved Balor on the top rope and Balor fell the to mat. Banks and Natalya then battled outside the ring.

Shinsuke once again went for the Kinshasa but Balor avoided it and Nakamura slammed into the ring post. Banks tagged in and delivered Double Knees to Natalya outside the ring. Banks and Balor connected with Dropkicks to Natalya and Nakamura. Sasha then locked in the Bank Statement on Natalya in the middle of the ring for the submission victory.

– On Friday, WWE announced two more teams for the upcoming Mixed Match Challenge tournament that will air on Facebook Watch. SmackDown Live’s Jimmy Uso will team with Naomi and RAW’s Nia Jax and Apollo Crews.

As of this writing, the current lineup of teams includes:

Husband & Wife To Team Up For Mixed Match Challenge

Another team for the WWE’s Mixed Match Challenge tournament has been announced, and this time its for the blue brand. SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan has announced that real-life married couple Rusev and Lana will team up with each other for the Mixed Match Challenge. The pair joins teams such as Finn Balor & Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair & Bobby Roode, and Alexa Bliss & Braun Strowman.

Above is a video of the announcement and below is WWE’s official statement on the team being made:

Rusev to team with his wife Lana at WWE Mixed Match Challenge

SmackDown LIVE General Manager Daniel Bryan dropped a bombshell when he revealed that Rusev will team up with his wife Lana in the unprecedented WWE Mixed Match Challenge tournament on Facebook Watch.

The in-ring partnership between The Bulgarian Brute and The Ravishing Russian is an intriguing one to say the least. Rusev is a two-time Unites Champion who demands respect against any opponent in both singles and tag team competition. While Lana has not competed as extensively as her spouse, the Total Divas co-star has been quite visible in the struggle for supremacy in the SmackDown LIVE Women’s division and has officially entered the first-ever 30-Woman Over-the-Top Royal Rumble Match, signaling that she is, in fact, ready for top-notch competition.

Obviously, success for any tag team requires more than physical skill. There must also be an intuition between the competitors, something that can take years for two Superstars to develop. However, for a married couple in love, there is a much higher chance that element will already be intact, raising the odds that the WWE Mixed Match Challenge will end up being transformed into Rusev Day!

Together, Rusev and Lana will do battle in a ground-breaking tournament on Facebook Watch, where unlikely male-female WWE Superstar pairings will attempt to win $100,000 for a charity of their choice.

WWE Hall Of Famer To Serve As Commentator For Mixed Match Challenge

WWE announced on Facebook in a video with SmackDown Live commentator and Byron Saxton and backstage interviewer Renee Young that WWE Hall Of Famer Beth Phoenix will serve as a guest commentator for the Mixed Match Challenge later this month. Check out the video and official press release here:

From WWE.com:

Beth Phoenix announced for WWE Mixed Match Challenge commentary team

Few female competitors have dominated their division quite as convincingly as Phoenix. The former Women’s Champion ripped through anyone in her path and never failed to draw gasps from the WWE Universe, whether she was lifting Melina and Mickie James over her shoulder at the same time, eliminating The Great Khali from the 2002 Royal Rumble Match or Glam Slamming Eve from the top rope at the 2011’s Survivor Series.

The Glamazon will certainly provide a unique perspective on the ground-breaking Facebook Watch show, beginning Jan. 16 at 10 ET/ 7 PT.

Does Ric Flair Plan On Getting Married Again?, Goldust Wants To Team With Asuka

– On the latest edition of “Fan Questions With The Nature Boy,” Ric Flair addressed his relationship with girlfriend Wendy Barlow (aka Fifi the Maid in WCW) and whether wedding bells are in their future

“Oh, most certainly, yeah,” said Flair, who’s been married four times. “It’s just a question of, you know. her children are in school … it’s a long story.”

Flair married his first wife, Leslie Goodman, on August 28, 1971. They had two children, daughter Megan and son David, before divorcing in 1983 after twelve years of marriage. On August 27, 1983, he married his second wife, Elizabeth Harrell. They had two children, daughter Ashley and son Reid. Flair and Beth divorced in 2006 after nearly 23 years of marriage. On May 27, 2006, Flair married his third wife Tiffany VanDemark, a fitness competitor. In 2008, Tiffany filed for divorce from Flair, which was finalized in 2009. On November 11, 2009, Flair married his fourth wife, Jacqueline Beems, in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2012, Flair filed for divorce from Beems, which was finalized in 2014. Flair began dating Barlow in 2012 and they got engaged last year.

Flair also reveals that he cried when the Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors in this year’s NBA Finals and that it contributed to his health issues in August.

– Goldust is clamoring to team with Asuka in WWE Mixed Match Challenge, airing exclusively on Facebook Watch beginning Tuesday, January 16, at 10 ET/7 PT. In this video from backstage at today’s WWE live event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Goldust says they should team since he competed in a Mixed Tag Team Match before, with Luna Vachon at WrestleMania 14 (against Marc Mero and Sable). However, “The Empress of Tomorrow” says he’s not ready for Asuka.

Mixed Match Challenge Reveals Potential Spoiler For Clash Of Champions

WWE made two big announcements during the week which have ground breaking implications across the whole of the company, with careers on the line… or possibly not…

The first announcement came on SmackDown Live:

daniel bryan shane mcmahon clash of champions

The second came in the form of WWE’s twitter account:

Notice anything?

Sami Zayn features in both.  But how can Zayn feature in the Mixed Match Challenge, which airs on Facebook in January, if he’s fighting for his career in WWE at Clash of Champions?

There are a few points to bring up here.  The first is: of course Sami Zayn won’t lose his job, well not permanently.  It is possible that he loses and is brought back in some creative plot twist that leaves the WWE Universe both aghast and annoyed at the same time.  The frustrating part of the Mixed Match Challenge tweet is that it’s an oversight which potentially destroys the kayfabe aspect of the match.

The second point to bring up is the fact that the Mixed Match Challenge tweet was released after SmackDown Live, therefore anyone working behind the advertising/social media campaign could have swapped out Sami Zayn for another competitor.  This heavily suggests that Sami Zayn won’t be losing anything in the long run.

The final point to consider is the specific wording of the Clash of Champions match.

If Zayn and Owens Lose, then They Are fired from all of wwe

This looks at the tweet from the other side of the argument.  It makes sense that they should be working as per normal up until this match.  Therefore the advertising for the new Facebook challenge shouldn’t be affected, with Zayn being removed at a later date if he lost.

Overall, there are two ways of interpreting this clash of information.  You could see it as a mistake and a spoiler for the upcoming PPV.  Or you could interpret this as showing just how much Sami Zayn could lose on Sunday if he were to fall.

Opinion:

I think this is a mistake by WWE, but they could make the most out of it by framing it as presented above.  My heart says Zayn isn’t leaving, but my head says that WWE will mess with the crossover between kayfabe and reality.

WWE Superstars Pick Their Teammates For Mixed-Match Challenge

Yesterday’s announcement of WWE’s new Mixed Match Challenge show has resulted in several superstars picking who their potential teammates will be.

Not all Superstars from Raw and Smackdown will be eligible, however. Yesterday both Daniel Bryan and Kurt Angle announced the participating Superstars for their brands:

Raw & Smackdown Superstars Pick Their Preferred Teammates

Bobby Roode and Charlotte Flair seem to be bonding over their robes:

Will Lana and Rusev compete together?

Bayley and Sasha Banks comment on possible teammates:

Natalya seems interested in teaming with 1/3 of the New Day, Big E:

Samoa Joe seems less than enthused with having a partner at all:
