Backstage News On How Vince McMahon Reacted To No Mercy’s Main Events

While the finish of No Mercy’s both main events angered a lot of fans, it appears Vince McMahon’s reaction to it was very different and the Boss was apparently happy with the way things went.

According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the idea behind the match between Roman Reigns vs. John Cena was that Cena would hit Roman with his big moves but wouldn’t get the pin, and then Roman would defeat him with his usual moves.

Regarding Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman, the idea was that The Beast would survive several power slams from Strowman and then win with just one F5. They wanted most of this match to take place inside the ring that’s why there was only one spot outside where Braun threw Brock into the ring post.

Both these matches were designed to make Roman and Lesnar stand out as two guys who are on the top and make it look like there is no one else on their level in the company.

Vince McMahon was happy with No Mercy as things went exactly as they planned and the company delivered two ‘WrestleMania quality’ matches with clear non-controversial finishes.

All this is said to be part of the ‘Bigger Picture’ for WrestleMania 34 as Brock Lesnar’s strong build up will make the strongest impression when Roman Reigns will finally defeat him at WrestleMania next year.

Backstage Update On The Finish Of No Mercy Main Event

The finish of the match between Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman at No Mercy was surprising to many as people did not expect Strowman to be pinned after just one F5.

The way WWE had built The Monster Among Men, fans believed that he would pull some more offense and some even believed that he could end up winning the title. So when he lost, it made them wonder if the company changed the original plans for this match.

Though according to reports from F4Wonline.com, the finish wasn’t changed and the match between Strowman and Lesnar went as the Officials had originally planned.

Furthermore, it’s being said that despite the rising popularity of the former Wyatt Family Member, his match with Brock was always seen as just a stop in The Beast’s road to WrestleMania.

The current plans for Lesnar are still to keep the Universal title on him till WrestleMania 34 so he could drop it to Roman Reigns at the Show Of Shows next year.

It’s worth mentioning here that Braun Strowman was originally supposed to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the Great Balls Of Fire PPV earlier this year.

These plans were nixed after Strowman suffered a legit elbow injury and Samoa Joe ended up facing the Universal Champion at the event instead.

Possible Reason Why Emma Was Added To The Raw Women’s Championship Match At No Mercy

As we noted before, Emma and Nia Jax won a tag team match this past Monday Night and as a result, the two Raw stars will now also be the part of the Women’s Championship match at No Mercy.

However, while the addition of Nia Jax was exciting to many, Emma being added to the championship match was surprising for people as the former NXT Star hasn’t done much in the recent times to justify her spot in the bout.

Though, during the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that the company actually has a good reason to add the Raw star into this championship bout.

The Wrestling Journalist said that Emma was included in the match to protect the other three competitors, namely Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax.

While Dave didn’t clearly state it, this most likely means that Emma would end up taking the pin or tapping out to a submission during the match.

There is currently no news on if WWE is planning a title change at the upcoming Raw Exclusive PPV or Alexa Bliss will end up retaining her Championship on the show.

WWE No Mercy will take place on September 24, 2017, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California

WWE No Mercy PPV Officially Announced For Later This Year

It was announced on Monday that WWE’s No Mercy pay-per-view will return later this year as a RAW-exclusive event on Sunday, September 24th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

WWE made the news official via Twitter, and you can get tickets below if you use the promo code “WWEVIP”:

WWE No Mercy Will Be A RAW Brand PPV This Year

WWE continues to shuffle the deck with RAW and SmackDown’s pay-per-view events. After reviving ‘No Mercy’ last October as a SmackDown show, the 2017 installment will feature RAW superstars and is taking place in September.

Prior to last October, WWE had not held a No Mercy PPV since 2008. After a 7 year hiatus, No Mercy returned and saw then-WWE Champion AJ Styles defend against Dean Ambrose and John Cena in the main event.

This year’s No Mercy will take place on Sunday, September 24th from Los Angeles, California at the Staples Center.

WWE Monday Night RAW returns to the Staples Center on June 26th, so tickets for No Mercy will probably go on sale around that time.

Reaction: This was an excellent match. The crowd was on the edge of their seat the entire time. AJ Styles needed to retain his title and he did so. If you didn’t catch this match live it is definitely worth checking out on the WWE Network.

Nikki Bella vs Carmella

Carmella dominated 99% of this match but Nikki Bella kept battling back. Carmella locked in the Code of Silence but Nikki reached the bottom rope. Nikki Bella eventually hit the Rack Attack 2.0 for the victory.

Winners & Still Smackdown Tag Team Champions: Heath Slater & Rhyno

Reaction: I was totally wrong about this one. I thought The Usos would win the titles and that the crowd had lost interest in Slater and Rhyno. The audience was very much behind Slater & Rhyno and their improbable title run continues.

Baron Corbin vs Jack Swagger

This match started off very physical. Corbin kicked the steel steps outside the ring while Swagger’s hand was trapped between the steps and the post. Corbin then continued to target Swagger’s hand and stomped on it several times. The crowd didn’t seem too interested in this match and even chanted “boring!” a few times.

Corbin was dominant for most of the match but Swagger kept battling back. Swagger went for the Patriot Lock but couldn’t apply it due to his injured hand. Corbin slammed Swagger to the mat but Swagger kicked out at two. Corbin began to get frustrated and started shouting at the referee. Corbin then shouted at the crowd to shut up.

Swagger eventually did lock in the Patriot Lock but Corbin reached the ring apron and pulled it into the ring. The referee broke up the hold and went to fix the ring apron. While the referee wasn’t looking, Corbin poked Swagger in the eye and followed it up with the End of Days for the victory.

Winner: Baron Corbin

Reaction: The crowd really wanted nothing to do with this match. I didn’t think this match was great by any means. However, it was better than the crowd gave it credit for. It told a story and Corbin got his revenge for the controversial finish that took place on Smackdown. I think Corbin and Swagger work well together and hope they continue to do so. I understand not being interested in a feud. What I do not understand is why people would just summarily dismiss a match before it even happens.

Intercontinental Championship/ Retirement Match: The Miz (c) vs Dolph Ziggler

The Miz controlled the match early and mocked Daniel Bryan by doing the “yes!” chant while standing over Ziggler. The Miz hit three Dropkicks on Ziggler in the corner. However, when he went for the fourth Ziggler sprinted out of the corner and hit Miz with a massive Dropkick.

The Miz quickly regained control of the match and targeted Ziggler’s leg. Ziggler was locked in the Figure Four but was able to withstand the pain and reach the bottom rope. Maryse got onto the ring apron to distract the referee and The Miz removed the padding from the top turnbuckle. Ziggler went to jump onto The Miz but he got out of the way and Dolph landed right on the exposed turnbuckle. The Miz followed this up with a Powerbomb but Ziggler kicked out at two.

Ziggler finally got in some offense and hit a Zig Zag. The Miz kicked out at two but Ziggler quickly locked in a Sleeper Hold. The Miz was able to make it to the bottom rope and the hold was broken. Maryse then sprayed hairspray in Ziggler’s face and The Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale. Ziggler was able to get his leg on the bottom rope and the referee stopped the count.

The Miz accidentally ripped of Ziggler’s boot and Dolph hit him with a Superkick. As Dolph was going for the pin, the Spirit Squad sprinted down to the ring and distracted the referee. Ziggler took out the Spirit Squad but The Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale. Once again, Ziggler kicked out and the crowd went crazy. The referee finally threw Maryse and the Spirit Squad out. The Miz was distracted by this and when he turned around Ziggler hit another Superkick for the victory.

Winner & New Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler

Reaction: This match had a lot of hype going into it and thankfully it lived up to it. The Miz and Dolph Ziggler put on a terrific match that was full of emotion. The crowd was split down the middle in the beginning of the match but by the end of it they were heavily behind Ziggler.

Naomi vs Alexa Bliss

Naomi controlled the match early but Alexa Bliss fought back. Naomi hit Alexa with the Rear View but Bliss kicked out. Naomi then rolled up Alexa for the pinfall victory.

Winner: Naomi

Bray Wyatt vs Randy Orton

Bray Wyatt was shown earlier in the night sitting in his rocking chair and speaking in tongues. Orton was then shown looking in the mirror and his face became distorted. The match itself started out back and forth. Wyatt went for the Sister Abigail rather quickly but Orton blocked it and sent Bray flying to the outside of the ring. Orton followed him and went for the RKO but Wyatt threw him over the announce table. Wyatt then set up the steel steps near the table but Orton recovered and hit Bray with a series of Clotheslines.

The action returned to the ring and Bray Wyatt was in control. Wyatt mocked Orton by posing for the crowd on the turnbuckle. Wyatt went for a Senton but Orton got out of the way and Wyatt landed on the steel steps. Orton took control of the match and hit Wyatt with a DDT. The lights cut out and when they came back on Luke Harper was in the ring. Wyatt then hit the Sister Abigail on Orton for the win. After the match, Wyatt and Luke Harper celebrated and stared at Orton from the entrance ramp.

Winner: Bray Wyatt

Reaction: I’ve mentioned on this site a few times that Bray Wyatt needed to win this match. It didn’t matter if it was outside interference or not, Wyatt simply needed to win. The reason being that he never wins any matches. It is hard to take a character seriously when they constantly lose. Luke Harper returning was awesome but I think a lot of people were expecting something more to happen in this match. Whether it be Sister Abigail making an appearance or something else more shocking. The match itself was decent.

Overall, No Mercy was a very good show. The WWE World Championship and the Intercontinental Championship matches were excellent. If I had to chose a match of the night I would probably go with The Miz versus Dolph Ziggler. There was just so much at stake in that match and I thought it was over countless times. The Miz had a pretty good IC title run. Hopefully Ziggler can continue to make that belt as important as it should be.

Ambrose takes AJ up top, but Cena powerbombs Ambrose off the turnbuckle. Cena goes for an AA on Styles, but Styles gets out and puts Cena in the Calf Crusher. Ambrose breaks it up, then puts Styles in his own move — the Calf Crusher. Cena then simultaneously puts AJ in the STFU, and AJ taps out. The referee calls for the bell, then tries to figure out how to call the winner. The referee declares that the match must continue, and Ambrose and Cena start going at it again. Ambrose reverses an AA into a Dirty Deeds and pins, but AJ Styles pulls the referee outside. Cena comes back with an AA off the top rope to Ambrose, then AJ comes in out of nowhere with a steel chair and decks Cena. AJ pins Cena right away after the chairshot for the win.

Nikki Bella def. Carmella: Carmella takes things outside and works on Nikki’s back and neck early on. Back in the ring, she hits a Bronco Buster and puts Nikki in a headlock. Nikki comes back with a spear and a springboard roundhouse kick for a two count. Carmella comes back and locks in the Code of Silence, but Nikki fights out and hits a clothesline. Carmella gets her in the Code of Silence again, and this time Nikki reaches the ropes. Nikki hits a fireman’s carry into a neckbreaker for the win.

– The Miz has a brief confrontation with Daniel Bryan in the back, and guarantees that he will retire Dolph Ziggler tonight.

Heath Slater & Rhyno (c) def. The Usos: Rhyno starts off with some chops to the chest of Jimmy Uso, then tags in Slater for a double clothesline. Slater hits a flying elbow in the corner, but Jimmy comes back with a clothesline then tags in Jey. Rhyno tags in and goes for the Gore, but Jey moves and hits the butt bump in the corner. Rhyno comes back with a spinebuster then tags in Slater. Slater cleans house and hits a superkick and a hangman’s neckbreaker on Jey Uso for a two count. Jey comes back with a big Samoan drop for a two count of his own. Jimmy tags in and goes up top, but Slater catches him halfway and powerslams him off. Jey tags in and puts Slater in the Tequila Sunrise. Rhyno gores Jimmy on the outside, then hits the ring and clotheslines Jey to break the hold on Slater. Rhyno gets the tag and Gores Jey for the win.

Baron Corbin def. Jack Swagger: After some good back and forth action in the opening minutes, Swagger takes control with a back suplex and a splash for a near-fall. Swagger goes for an ankle lock but Corbin evades it and hits a side slam for a two count. Swagger is eventually able to get the ankle lock on, but Corbin pokes the eyes to get out and hits the End of Days for the win.

Dolph Ziggler def. The Miz: Ziggler takes things to the outside early on and beats Miz down around ringside. Back in the ring they go back and forth with dueling chants from the fans. The Miz drops Ziggler with a clothesline then a big boot for a two count. He stomps on Ziggler in the corner and mocks Daniel Bryan’s “yes” chant. The Miz hits a series of dropkicks, but Ziggler blocks the fourth one and hits a dropkick of his own. Ziggler hits a splash in the corner, a neckbreaker and an elbow drop for a near-fall. Miz comes back with a powerbomb for a two count, then a big boot for another two count using the ropes for leverage. After a series of back and forth pin attempts, Miz gets Ziggler in a Figure Four. Ziggler reaches the ropes, and Miz keeps the hold locked in for the full five seconds. Maryse distracts the referee and The Miz exposes the turnbuckle and slams Ziggler into it. The Miz follows up with a sit down powerbomb for a near-fall. Ziggler ducks a roundhouse kick and hits the Zig Zag for another near-fall. Ziggler fights out of another Figure Four leg lock and hits a superkick, but then Kenny and Mikey of The Spirit Squad run out and distract the referee. Ziggler superkicks them off the apron, then The Miz comes from behind with a Skull Crushing Finale for a near-fall. The referee ejects Maryse, Kenny and Mikey from ringside, and while The Miz is distracted Ziggler hits a superkick for the win. Ziggler celebrates with his new Intercontinental Championship belt as he heads to the back.

Naomi def. Alexa Bliss: Alexa cuts a promo on Becky Lynch for being unable to compete tonight, and with that, Naomi comes out to defend her friend and we have a match. Bliss controls the opening moments of the match until Naomi comes back with her signature kicks. Naomi drops Alexa with a kick to the head then hits a split-legged moonsault for a near-fall. Alexa comes back with a forearm to the face then goes for a cross armbreaker, but Naomi rolls her into a pin for the win out of nowhere.

Bray Wyatt def. Randy Orton: We see more video packages of Orton and Wyatt cutting promos on each other. Orton goes for an RKO early on, but Wyatt avoids it and rolls outside laughing. Shortly after, Wyatt goes for the Sister Abigail but Orton escapes that. They brawl out to ringside where Orton attempts an RKO, but Wyatt pushes him off over the announce able. Wyatt beats Orton down around ringside, then throws him back in the ring for a Senton bomb for a two count. Wyatt hits a splash in the corner for another two count. Will Baron Corbin & Apollo Crews Be Featured On No Mercy?

Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin were drafted to Smackdown but they are mostly seen on Main Event. Crews and Corbin looked like they were going to be massive stars right away. Corbin was placed in a Six-Pack Challenge to determine the #1 Contender to the WWE Championship. Apollo Crews won a Battle Royal and was also added to the Six-Pack Challenge. Dolph Ziggler wound up winning the match and oddly enough his WWE career might be ending in a couple of weeks at No Mercy.

Apollo Crews has spent the last two months losing. He was easily defeated by The Miz at Summerslam. Shortly after that, he was awarded another oppurtunity at the Intercontinental Championship but once again The Miz came out on top. If Apollo Crews is featured on Smackdown nowadays, it is in a four minute match that results in him losing. His best match on the main roster so far may have happened on the Backlash Kickoff Show against Baron Corbin. Crews also lost that contest but at the very least he looked like he belonged in the ring with Corbin.

Baron Corbin has dominated everyone he has faced but it really hasn’t done much for him. When he is not featured on Smackdown, does anybody notice? He had a feud with Kalisto recently in which Corbin would attack Kalisto backstage. That feud went absolutely nowhere and nothing has come from it. Corbin has defeated Crews a couple of times now and it has gotten to the point where the audience doesn’t seem invested in either performer. It is hard to blame them, the WWE hasn’t given these guys anything to work with.

The current card for No Mercy is as follows:

  • WWE Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs John Cena vs Dean Ambrose
  • Intercontinental Championship/Career Match: The Miz (c) vs Dolph Ziggler
  • Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: Heath Slater & Rhyno (c) vs The Usos
  • Smackdown Women’s Championship Match: Becky Lynch (c) vs Alexa Bliss
  • Bray Wyatt vs Randy Orton

There is one Smackdown left before the PPV and surely there will be a couple more matches added to this show. Hopefully, it is not just Corbin versus Crews again with nothing at stake. I’m not suggesting that Corbin and Crews should be vying for the WWE Championship right now. The WWE has had a heck of a time building new stars recently and sometimes it appears like they aren’t even trying to. JBL has made it a point to practically scream into the headset every single time Corbin is on Smackdown that he is a future World Champion. One would think that the WWE might want to start building up these guys because right now the WWE Universe simply doesn’t care about them. Leaving them both off the No Mercy card or sticking them against each other in another meaningless Kickoff Show match won’t help them much either.

Why Would Anyone In The WWE Fear Bray Wyatt? (Editorial)

Since 2015, Bray Wyatt has competed in 246 matches and been victorious in 39 of them. In 2016 alone, Wyatt has only won 11 of his 81 matches. Given this fact, the WWE still tries to sell their audience on the idea that Bray Wyatt is a “God”. They constantly refer to Wyatt as “the face of fear” and JBL always raves about everyone one of Wyatt’s promos.

A few weeks ago at Backlash, Bray Wyatt was supposed to face off against Randy Orton. Unfortunately, Orton was unable to compete due to the concussion he suffered during his match against Brock Lesnar at Summerslam. The WWE smartly had Wyatt attack Orton backstage as an excuse to not have the match. Wyatt came down to the ring and forced the ring announcer to proclaim him as the winner of a match that never took place.

A random No Holds Barred match was then made between Kane and Bray Wyatt. Bray Wyatt got in some offense but Kane actually controlled the majority of the match. The finish of the match saw Randy Orton coming down to the ring and hitting an RKO on Wyatt. Kane then followed this up with a Chokeslam and won the match. Kane was Chokeslamming someone named The Milk Man on Smackdown before Backlash, now he was defeating the “Eater of Worlds” on a PPV. Kane has also done absolutely nothing since defeating Wyatt.

Fast forward to today. No Mercy is on the horizon and Orton and Wyatt will finally have their match. Last night on the greatest Smackdown of all time according to the comment section, Wyatt tried to play mind-games with Orton. He set up a maze backstage with words on the arena walls. “Predator or Prey” and “I am a God” were written all over the place. Erick Rowan observed Orton as he walked around backstage. Orton almost opened a door. It was just riveting television.

Smackdown opened up with Orton stating that Wyatt was afraid of him. By the end of the night, that was proven to be true. Orton confronted Wyatt backstage with a sheep mask on and Wyatt took off running. Orton then sang that he has got the whole world in his hands and the crowd sang along. Thus, Wyatt was once again proven to be a coward. It would be astonishing if Wyatt somehow defeated Orton clean at No Mercy. If he does win it will be due to outside interference, which is fine. I just don’t understand how anyone can view Wyatt as a monster or a “God” anymore. The WWE seems to be booking Bo Dallas as a more dominant figure than Bray Wyatt.

Do you think Wyatt will win at No Mercy and finally get back on track? Or will Wyatt once again lose and go continue to cut ultimately meaningless promos every week? Dolph Ziggler obviously has the highest stakes at No Mercy but I think this is a match/feud that Wyatt really needs to win.

WWE No Mercy: Steel Cage Match Rumored, Tag Title Defense

There’s been talk of Dolph Ziggler’s feud with Intercontinental Champion The Miz leading to a steel cage match at WWE No Mercy, according to the Wrestling Observer. The match is not yet official for the show, but an announcement will be coming soon.

The Usos are expected to challenge Heath Slater and Rhyno for the SmackDown tag titles. Even though Slater is in the midst of a nice push, they’re expected to drop the titles to The Usos soon. Well before the first champions were crowned, the plan was to set up a big feud between American Alpha and heel Usos.

As of this writing, the only matches confirmed for No Mercy on 10/9 are the triple threat main event (Styles vs Cena vs Ambrose) and Becky Lynch defending the SmackDown women’s title against Alexa Bliss.

Lana Speaks With No Accent (Video), Rumored No Mercy Match

– In addition to Becky Lynch defending the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss at No Mercy, another women’s match in the works is a grudge match between Nikki Bella and Carmella.

Nikki also indicated that the two will face off on SmackDown next Tuesday:

WWE No Mercy takes place on Sunday, October 9th.

– We’ve heard Lana go in and out of her Russian accent on WWE television before, but she’s dropping the accent entirely for the upcoming WWE Studios film Interrogation. The movie stars Lana along with WWE Hall of Famer Edge. The synopsis reads:

“After the FBI receives a threat that endangers the entire city, an interrogator (Edge) and an I.T. specialist (Lana) are plunged into a series of mind games with a criminal mastermind, desperately racing against time to uncover the villain’s true agenda as they fight to protect thousands of lives.”

Lana’s character in the movie speaks with her natural American accent, which you can hear below. She, Edge and the director get creative in explaining why she’s not using her her WWE television character’s trademark Russian accent.

New #1 Contender For Becky Lynch Named, Possible No Mercy Match

It looks like Becky Lynch will defend her newly won SmackDown Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss at the upcoming WWE No Mercy PPV.

Bliss became the new #1 contender after defeating Nikki Bella, Carmella, Naomi and Natalya in a Fatal 5 Way on this week’s SmackDown Live.

Earlier in the show, Shane McMahon announced the main event of No Mercy will see AJ Styles defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match.

WWE No Mercy takes place on Sunday, October 9th from Sacramento, California.

AJ Styles & Becky Lynch React To Their Title Wins (Videos), WWE No Mercy Promo

– AJ Styles and Becky Lynch won big at Sunday night’s Backlash PPV, both winning their first championships in WWE and becoming the new faces of the SmackDown brand. WWE caught up with both of them backstage at the show. Styles delivered a low blow to Dean Ambrose before putting him away with the Styles Clash, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter that he bent the rules en route to capturing the WWE World Championship. At the end of the day, he’s got the gold and he’s in the history books.

After becoming the first SmackDown Women’s Champion, Becky Lyncg still can’t believe her girlhood dream has come true.

– WWE has released the first promo for the SmackDown brand’s next pay-per-view, No Mercy (10/9).

Backlash, Clash Of Champions, No Mercy, Roadblock Returning As Split-Brand PPVs?

In recent weeks we’ve been hearing that WWE will begin running brand-exclusive pay-per-views after SummerSlam, with only the company’s big 4 “legacy” shows (WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series and Royal Rumble) featuring talent from both brands.

On Wednesday, Reddit user /r/Wrestlingleaker leaked WWE’s complete 2016 pay-per-view schedule. We reached out to WWE and have not yet heard back regarding the validity of the schedule, but let’s take a look at this unconfirmed information.

As part of this new pay-per-view format, WWE is reportedly bringing back several retired events, including Backlash and No Mercy. The WWE Network exclusive “Roadblock” show from earlier this year is now a full-fledged pay-per-view and Night of Champions has been replaced by Clash of Champions.

Based on this structure, with legacy PPV’s featuring talent from both brands but all other months featuring brand-specific shows, WWE would be on track to produce 20 “pay-per-views” in 2016. Throw in the quarterly (for now) NXT Takeover shows and we’ve got a WWE PPV every two weeks.

The following is the rumored WWE PPV schedule for the remainder of 2016, with 9 shows booked over the next 6 months.

  • 7/24: Battleground (Washington, DC): RAW & SmackDown
  • 8/21: SummerSlam (Brooklyn, NY): RAW & SmackDown
  • 9/11: Backlash (Richmond, VA): SmackDown Exclusive
  • 9/25: Clash of Champions (Indianapolis, IN): RAW Exclusive
  • 10/9: No Mercy (Sacramento, CA): SmackDown Exclusive
  • 10/30: Hell in a Cell (Boston, MA): RAW Exclusive
  • 11/20: Survivor Series (Toronto, ON): RAW & SmackDown
  • 12/4: TLC (Dallas, TX) : SmackDown Exclusive
  • 12/18: Roadblock (Pittsburgh, PA): RAW Exclusive

Here’s the leaked document showing the full 2016 WWE PPV schedule – again, this is unconfirmed:
