Adam Cole Retains WWE NXT Title At TakeOver: Portland

Adam Cole was not dethroned as WWE NXT Champion by Tommaso Ciampa as he was able to retain his title.

Cole did so in the headliner of the WWE NXT TakeOver: Portland event from the Moda Center. This marked his first title defense on a TakeOver special of the new year. Johnny Gargano ran down to the ring to even the odds against The Undisputed Era. This was when Ciampa went for the NXT Title, but he was hit in the head with it by Gargano.

Cole’s previous title defense came in December on an episode of NXT on the USA Network in Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University over Finn Balor.

This contest was officially announced on the January 29th episode of NXT when there was a segment on the show where Ciampa attacked Cole in the ring where he put him through a table and signed a contract in his own blood.

This was Ciampa’s first chance to get his goldie back. In the early stage of 2019, Ciampa suffered a neck injury that ultimately led to him getting surgery and relinquishing the title.

Ciampa made his return to NXT television back on the two-hour premiere of NXT on the USA Network back on October 2nd.

Keith Lee Remains North American Champion At TakeOver: Portland

Keith Lee keeps on rolling as NXT North American Champion.

As seen at Sunday’s (February 16, 2020) WWE NXT TakeOver: Portland event from the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon on the WWE Network, Lee made his first successful title defense as champion when he beat Dominik Dijakovic.

On the February 5th episode of NXT, WWE booked Dominik Dijakovic vs. Killian Dain in a singles match that served as a #1 contender’s match.

This match was expected as WWE teased both Dijakovic and Dain squaring off in the ring after releasing a video earlier today on YouTube where they teased a showdown as both stars wanted a shot at the title. They both thought that they were worthy of a title match.

As seen in the contest, Dijakovic ended up going over. As a result, he will challenge NXT North American Champion Keith Lee at the NXT TakeOver: Portland show. They had a staredown after the match.

Time will tell whether WWE continues this feud going forward.

Details On WWE Moving NXT TakeOver Shows To Sundays, Worlds Collide Plans

Details behind the decision made by WWE on moving days for the next NXT and NXT UK TakeOver specials have surfaced.

WWE has already confirmed that NXT TakeOver will take place on a Sunday in Portland, Oregon on February 16, 2020 while the next UK TakeOver will be on January 12 at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. Both shows will air on WWE’s streaming service, WWE Network.

Historically, WWE has aired TakeOver shows for NXT UK on Saturday afternoons while NXT aired on Saturday nights. The two shows above will take place on Sunday during those same time slots.

Dwayne Johnson Shares Who Is On His ‘Wrestling Mount Rushmore’

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE is putting the upcoming TakeOver shows on Sunday as an “experiment.” The reason for that is to see how they will perform on a new night on the WWE Network.

The company is also experimenting with shows like Worlds Collide on a Saturday before a WWE pay-per-view. The next Worlds Collide will take place the night before the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event in January in Houston, Texas.

The idea behind the experiment is to make Sunday the destination for each major show for every WWE brand.

Regarding the Worlds Collide event on January 25, WWE promoted the show in the official announcement as an NXT vs. NXT UK show in a “clash for brand supremacy.”

According to the report, the show will be built around NXT vs. NXT UK matches that fans have never been able to have the chance to see before up to this point. The event has been in the works for the last few months and before WWE did it with a similar concept for Survivor Series this year.
