David Starr Sounds Off on Wrestler who Injured Pete Dunne

PROGRESS and WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne was scheduled to perform against Jack Gallagher for PROGRESS this past weekend in New York. Unfortunately Dunne suffered a deep cut during a match against Darius Carter for Battle Club Pro the night before and had to vacate his spot on the card.

Part-time PROGRESS performer David Starr has taken to Twitter since the event to air his frustrations on the situation and essentially ‘bury’ Darius Carter, he had this to say:

Check out the video below to see the spot that injured Dunne, a ‘Pedigree’ on a championship belt.

WWE Star to Appear at PROGRESS in New York

PROGRESS will be hosting their first ever New York event on August 12th at the Elmcor Center in Queens.

As part of the event WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne will be putting his belt on the line against former PROGRESS performer and current 205 competitor Jack Gallagher.

This will be a very welcome return for the ‘Gentleman’ who became a mainstay for the company during his initial run, helping the upstart company reach new heights through his feuds with Zack Gibson, El Ligero and….Pete Dunne.

Pete Dunne On Defending WWE UK Title In Other Promotions, His Goals In UK Scene & WWE

WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne recently was interviewed by Sky Sports and below are some highlights:

His match against Tyler Bate at NXT TakeOver: Chicago:

“At Takeover we felt a lot of pressure to show what the UK scene is capable of. We assumed we were unknown, went to kill it and our goal was to be so good it increases the pressure for a UK show. We want it, fans want it and we feel we helped with that.”

Defending the WWE UK Championship in other independent promotions:

“It’s best for WWE. It’s not an attempt to destroy the independent scene, it’s a great feeder system for WWE. Opportunities like this aren’t just great for us, they’re great for everyone. It’s only natural to see more of this in the future.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txqg-aTfmHU

His goals in UK scene & WWE:

“I’m taking it every day as it comes but I want to build a real UK scene. I’ll continue to develop and have storylines in Progress Wrestling and others like ICW.

But of course, eventually I’d like to be a WWE main roster talent, be on NXT, get to a Wrestlemania and compete for the world titles while representing the UK scene.”

Pete Dunne Retains WWE UK Title at ICW PPV, WWE Hypes Successful Defence on WWE.com

WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne appeared at Insane Championship Wrestling’s ‘Shug’s Hoose Party 4’ event that took place Saturday night in Glasgow, Scotland.

The BruiserWeight defeated Trent Seven, Wolfgang and BT Gunn in a Fatal 4-Way Match to retain his WWE UK title. Both Wolfgang and Trent Seven are signed to WWE’s UK division however BT Gunn is not among the current roster, therefore this historic match saw an active WWE wrestler defend his active WWE championship against a non contracted performer.

WWE hyped Dunne’s successful defence on WWE.com, they issued the following statement:

“In the first WWE United Kingdom Championship defense to take place in the U.K. outside of a WWE ring, Pete Dunne successfully retained the title Saturday night in Glasgow, Scotland.

The BruiserWeight defeated Trent Seven, Wolfgang and BT Gunn in a Fatal 4-Way Match at Night 1 of “Shug’s Hoose Party 4,” an event held by Insane Championship Wrestling at the O2 ABC. The sold-out event will be available for viewing on ICW’s on-demand service starting 24 hours after the show.

Following the match, the victorious Dunne, never one to mince words, said “ICW is one of the top promotions in the world, and I own it now … just like I own WWE.”

Also at “Shug’s Hoose Party 4,” Cruiserweight Noam Dar returned to action in ICW, which was one of his stomping grounds prior to joining WWE. Dar joined former Pinky Party tag team partner Sha Samuels in tag team action.

Now that Dunne has turned back three opponents in one fell swoop, who will be next in line to step to The BruiserWeight? This much is obvious: The brash but brilliantly dangerous Dunne is unlikely to back down from the challenger, whomever it is.”

Preview for Sunday’s PROGRESS Chapter 53

PROGRESS has unveiled the full card for their upcoming Chapter 53 event ‘Fate Loves the Fearless.’ Here are the matches that will be taking place on Sunday July 30th:

PROGRESS Women’s Title Match: Toni Storm (c) vs Candice LeRae – This is quite possibly the highest profile Women’s title match since the inception of the belt. Both women will be a part of the Mae Young Classic for WWE and both are being labelled as heavy favourites for that tournament. I’m expecting Toni to retain in what could easily steal the show on this packed card.

PROGRESS Tag Team Title Match: British Strong Style (c) vs Jimmy Havoc & Mark Haskins – Both Haskins and Havoc are trying stake their claim for another shot at the PROGRESS title. Current PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne has announced that he will not be defending the title until September and the company’s Alexandria Palace show…so to appease the two hot headed competitors they will be getting a shot at the PROGRESS Tag Team Titles. The current champions Trent Seven & Tyler Bate are no slouches and this should be an absolute barn burner of a match, I’m expecting BSS to retain their titles here.

Travis Banks vs Keith Lee – As part of the Dunne/Banks build for September both men have been given the opportunity to decide their counterparts opponents on the Chapter events before Alexandria Palace. Pete Dunne decided that Banks should face EVOLVE standout Keith Lee in what is easily one of the biggest matches of Travis Banks’ career. This will be an absolute spectacle with two of the best in the world colliding for the first time in a PROGRESS ring. I’m going for a Banks win and yet another contender for MOTN

Pete Dunne vs Jack Sexsmith – If you have been following my PROGRESS reports for any length of time you’ll know how much of a fan I am of Jack Sexsmith. The charismatic performer finally gets his shot in the main event against the PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne. Although this is a non-title match it is a chance for Jack to show his worth at the top of the card. PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne has been producing some of the best work of his career ever since winning the title and his stock has only risen since his WWE UK Title win at NXT Takeover earlier this year. The current rumour is that Dunne will be leaving the company come 2018 and that this run as champion will be his swan song in the company.

  • Chief Deputy Dunne vs Chuck Mambo
  • #CCK vs Extra Talent-ed
  • James Lynch vs Rob Davis
  • Zack Gibson & James Drake vs Never Say Die

PROGRESS Sell Out their Biggest Event of the Year, Plus another Match announced for New York Event

PROGRESS has officially sold out their biggest upcoming event of the year. The company heads to Alexandra Palace on Sunday September 10th in front of a crowd of over 2,000 spectators.

Only one match has been announced for the show so far, PROGRESS and WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne will be facing Travis Banks for the PROGRESS Championship in the Main Event.

PROGRESS has also announced another match for the upcoming New York City event. World of Sport star Zack Gibson, WWE UK performer Mark Andrews and Mark Haskins will face off in a triple threat match on August 12th. The implications for this match are far reaching as the company looks to establish the main event scene coming out of Alexandra Palace in September. Many are expecting Pete Dunne to officially leave the UK and join NXT so it will be interesting to see the projection of the company in the coming months.

WWE UK Champion Confirmed for match with Pro Wrestling NOAH Legend

UK based independent promotion Lucha Forever has announced that WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne will face Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Naomichi Marufuji.

The newly formed promotion is run by UK talents Ryan Smile & Will Ospreay and has already put together some high profile cards throughout England with the likes of Marty Scurll, Travis Banks, Trent Seven and Tyler Bate.

Dunne and Marufuji will face of at Lucha Forever’s Ultimo Battle event taking place on October 5th in London. Tickets are available through the official Lucha Forever site.

WWE Promotes ICW Pay Per View

As noted previously here on SEScoops, the WWE UK Championship will be defended outside of the company for the very first time on PPV: July 29th in Scotland’s ICW promotion.

As well as WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne, 205 Live competitor Noam Dar will be returning ‘home’ to ICW. WWE has not only granted Insane Championship Wrestling use of their talent but they have also begun promoting the PPV via their social media outlets.

We’ve mentioned it numerous times over the past couple of months however the rumors surrounding an ICW/WWE partnership are clearly evident and it looks like an ICW presence on WWE Network is closer than we think.

Pete Dunne Talks UK WrestleMania, ‘Bruiserweight’ Origin

Earlier this month, WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was interviewed by IWC Radio. Dunne spoke about a number of topics, including the origin of his “Bruiserweight” nickname.

“I was in China for 3 months, doing a tour and I was teaming with CJ Banks,” he said. “We needed a name and it was around the time of the Cruiserweight Classic. We thought Bruiserweight’s was a pretty funny name. We put it on social media and never thought anymore of it. Then, Andy Quildan from Revolution Pro Wrestling contacted me and said that he wanted to bring me in and use this Bruiserweight stuff. Whilst there, I just added pieces to the puzzle and it’s become what it is today. That year, I was trying to stand out as much as possible and the term Bruiserweight really fit my character and people seem to like it.”

Dunne also commented on the possibility of WWE bringing WrestleMania to the United Kingdom one day. “It’s not something I’ve heard but it’s always something I try to talk about,” said Dunne. “Considering my responsibility of being the UK Champion, if I can help that happen, then I will do my best.”

He continued,  “Whether it’s that, a different PPV or another WWE Network special, the more of that stuff then the better. The more British wrestling we can get then that’s got to be better. I hope that one day we can do that and that I can be a part of it.”

WWE UK Championship to be defended at ICW Pay Per View

Scotland’s own Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) has announced that WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne will be defending his title at their upcoming Pay Per View event ‘Shug’s Hoose Party 4.’ This will be the first time that the WWE UK Title will be defended on UK shores outside of the WWE banner.

This news follows the announcement of 205 Live star Noam Dar being featured on the card. Although no official partnership has ever been confirmed between ICW and WWE we may see similar talent trades going forward and WWE ‘giving back’ to the UK Independent scene that built their UK Championship show.

PROGRESS Chapter 50 ‘I Give it Six Months’ Results

PROGRESS’ 50th Chapter event ‘I Give it Six Months’ took place yesterday at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London. The show featured a huge announcement from the PROGRESS/WWE UK Champion and an incredible Tag Title match and change of champions. Here are the results:

The London Riots (James Davis & Rob Lynch) b. The Origin: Banter Edition (Dave Mastiff & El Ligero) – This was The Riots first win in a VERY long time, Banter Edition are also still looking to pick up wins since their split from The Origin

“Flash” Morgan Webster b. Jack Sexsmith – This match saw the re-debut of Chief Deputy Dunne. Dunne has not been seen since his split from longtime partner Pete Dunne last year, the leader of the Anti-Fun Police is sure to be a massive hit back in the top UK promotion

Pete Dunne b. Donovan Dijak – Dunne announced at the start of the show that he would not be defending his PROGRESS title until his match with Travis Banks at the September show. PROGRESS management agreed to this but stipulated that he would need to take part in non-title matches, if any of his opponents beat him then they would get a title shot in the near future. Dunne took the win after hitting the Bitter End

#CCK (Chris Brookes & Kid Lykos) b. British Strong Style (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) – Brookes and Lykos have only just debuted in PROGRESS but are already HUGE stars. Their Tag Title win here seems to set up a #CCK domination on the PROGRESS landscape when their stablemate Travis Banks wins the big one in Alexandra Palace this September

Pete Dunne Interview: Who Influenced His Style, Dream Opponent, Regal

WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne was a recent guest on the Card Subject to Change podcast. Topics discussed include his show-stealing match with Tyler Bate from NXT Takeover: Chicago, who influenced his in-ring style, his dream opponent and more. Here are some highlights they sent in – you can listen to the full interview below.

His UK Championship match against Tyler Bate at NXT TakeOver: Chicago:

“It was unbelievable really. When we were in there we didn’t realize what we’d just done. We felt like it went well but it was only afterwards when they rushed me straight off to the media and I was on the phone to ESPN, and it was only just starting to resonate with me how well it went.”

Who influenced his style:

“When I first got into wrestling I was into independent wrestling. I was into A.J. Styles, all those kind of people. And I wanted to wrestle like them and spent years trying to do that. And then people said to me you need to be more British, so I looked into Regal’s stuff, Fit Finlay. There’s definitely parts of both of those styles; there’s the athletic stuff and then there’s the British stuff.”

Working with William Regal:

“It’s brilliant. I have him to thank for getting me here in the first place…I kept getting missed calls from a number that I didn’t recognize…and the third time I realized it said Stamford, Connecticut…So I answer and it was Regal, completely out of the blue and he said he was in England, and wanted to come and watch me wrestle on that show in Mansfield. So instantly, my motivation went through the roof. So I met him there, he watched my match and he really liked it. He set me up a tryout in November…And here we are now.”

His Dream Opponent:

“The big one for me is Brock Lesnar. I like that you believe in him, because that is him. I try to carry myself that way and I look to someday reach that level. I think it would be a match people wouldn’t expect but it’s one I’d love to have. It’d be a good fight.”

Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate Switch Gimmicks for UK Match

UK based promotion ATTACK! Pro Wrestling recently held their annual ‘video game’ inspired show Press Start. This was the event’s fifth year of existence and ATTACK! were promoting it as ‘glitched out’ with some strange social media posts such as this:

Fans of the promotion were kept in the dark on how this would affect the event….it was revealed on the night that every match would feature gimmick switches for the competitors involved.

One of the highlight bouts saw a rematch between WWE UK stars Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne. It turned out to be one of the most surreal (and fun) bouts that the two have ever had. Further Information on the WWE UK Championship Series

Ryan Satin of the Pro Wrestling Sheet has released further details on the WWE UK division and the brand’s upcoming bi-weekly events.

The current plan calls for tapings every six weeks and for live events to run every other week in the UK featuring the UK contracted talent. The time frame for the tapings has not yet been finalised and it may well be several more months until tapings for the series begin.

The top stars in the division, namely Pete Dunne, Trent Seven, Tyler Bate, Wolfgang and Mark Andrews have reportedly signed US contracts that will allow them to drop in on the Florida based Performance Center when needed. These top stars will likely remain in the United Kingdom to focus on building the UK brand rather than continue to work cameo appearances on NXT.

PROGRESS Super Strong Style 16 Winner Revealed

This past weekend saw the return of PROGRESS’ biggest annual tournament. The Super Strong Style 16 is a 3 day event that sees some of the top independent talent in the world face off to determine the number one contender to the PROGRESS World Championship.

The likes of Tyler Bate, Jeff Cobb, Matt Riddle, Zack Sabre Jr., Mark Andrews, Trent Seven and Jimmy Havoc were all part of this year’s iteration, however it was PROGRESS fan favourite Travis Banks who eventually won the 16 man extravaganza.

Banks defeated former WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate in the final to earn a shot at the PROGRESS World Champion Pete Dunne. The venue for their bout has not yet been announced however it is likely to be at the Alexandra Palace in September.

Travis Banks recently took part in a WWE tryout at the O2 arena in London. He is one of the top performers on the UK independent circuit and has been touted by many to have a breakout year. He is already the Fight Club: Pro champion and he looks set to dethrone Pete Dunne later on this year for the PROGRESS World Championship.

Pete Dunne Names Brock Lesnar & William Regal As Dream Opponents

WWE’s new United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne spoke with ESPN this week about his show-stealing match with Tyler Bate at NXT Takeover: Chicago and which WWE Superstar he considers a dream opponent.

The 23 year-old-grappler from Birmingham, England told ESPN that he’s very proud of his match with Tyler Bate not only because of what they did in the ring, but because of their history together.

“I’m really glad I got to share that one with him. I had a big hand in training Tyler. I got him his first ever booking, which was against me in a tag match. As proud as I am of myself for being able to hold this WWE title, I was incredibly proud of him, as well. The two Brits on such a huge show of this magnitude.”

There’s a good chance we’ll see more matches between Dune and Bate, but that hasn’t stopped Dunne from thinking about potential ‘dream matches’ for himself down the road. Two names that came up were Brock Lesnar and NXT General Manager William Regal.

“I’d love to wrestle Brock Lesnar,” he said. “It’s the realism, the way he carries himself. It’s 100 percent believable because he’s real. That’s someone who I’d love to get in the ring with someday. I don’t think there’s a possibility of it ever happening, but I’d also love to wrestle William Regal one day.”

Dunne added that competing at WrestleMania is also a dream of his. Now that he’s a champion in WWE, that dream is closer than ever to becoming a reality.

PROGRESS Featured Heavily at WWE UK Tapings, Historic Record Set

The tapings for the new WWE UK Championship show on the WWE Network took place this past weekend and featured a number of top UK Independent stars.

Several of the performers over the two days are regulars for top UK promotion PROGRESS, including WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate, Trent Seven, Mark Andrews, James Drake and PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne.

The main event of Sunday’s tapings saw Trent Seven face Pete Dunne in a bout to determine the number 1 contender to Tyler Bate’s WWE UK Championship. When Dunne made his entrance he was seen ‘biting’ the PROGRESS Championship (which is part of his persona in the London based company). This sparked a huge reaction from the crowd inside Epic Studios and is possibly the first non-WWE Championship to be held inside a WWE ring since Tazz faced Triple H on Smackdown in April, 2000 with the ECW Championship around his waist.

PROGRESS Co-owner Jim Smallman also appeared in front of the live crowd to add to the surreal nature of these historic tapings.
