PROGRESS Wrestling & DEFY Wrestling Join Forces

It has come to light recently that independent wrestling promotions PROGRESS Wrestling and DEFY Wrestling are joining forces and have completed a merger.

Having a passionate fanbase, PROGRESS Wrestling has propelled numerous talents to international recognition. The promotion earned acclaim, setting a high standard with its jam-packed action.

Meanwhile, over the years, DEFY has pushed boundaries and captivated audiences with its dynamic storytelling and in-ring action. With a commitment to showcasing emerging talent and delivering high-octane matches, the promotion has got massive recognition in recent past.

PROGRESS & DEFY merge

The two promotions decided to issue a press release on Friday announcing that they are merging. PROGRESS is based in the United Kingdom and DEFY is based out of Seattle in the United States.

Notably, after the merger, DEFY content will soon be available on PROGRESS’ Demand PROGRESS Plus streaming service.

PROGRESS has been around since 2012 and was sold to Lee McAteer and Martyn Best. In a statement from Best in the press release, he said:

“Lee and I really welcome Jim [Perry] and Matt Farmer joining us at PROGRESS, and this is a major step in our wider plans for more international collaborations. We previously had a strong content partnership with WWE, and we have a developing relationship with Japanese promotion Pro Wrestling NOAH. With DEFY joining us, I am sure that our many combined fans will be very excited to see what happens next.

We will be continuing our closeness in Philadelphia with us both having shows at The Collective immediately prior to WrestleMania 40, and we are planning our second joint show in London later in the year. DEFY will also soon be seen on DEMAND PROGRESS PLUS, our content and live streaming platform, in the very near future and we have some fascinating ideas to highlight the great wrestling talent we both work with.

The announcement was made mere hours before DEFY’s seventh anniversary event on February 9. DEFY Wrestling’s Jim Perry said:

“I’ve been an admirer of PROGRESS from the start, and in some ways, they helped inspire the creation of DEFY. We have known each other for a number of years, and been working on many collaborations, including our successful double-show in London last August. I’m very excited about the opportunities of our more formal coming together, and the fans can expect to see some really neat ideas emerging.”

It is certainly a major step and we will have to wait and see how this merger helps in amping up the quality of the wrestling product.

PROGRESS Wrestling has released a new video interview on Peacock and WWE Network. The company confirmed this afternoon that the new series, Hi Def With Hustle, would be starting with a sit down between PROGRESS commentator Lee ‘Hustle’ Malone and British wrestling legend Doug Williams.

Doug Williams discusses a number of topics during the interview, ranging from his start in judo to his PROGRESS retirement match against Trent Seven inside of Wembley Arena.

Williams has most notably performed for Ring of Honor in the early to mid 2000s and TNA. During his time with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Doug Williams would become the X Division and Television Champion, whilst also winning the TNA Tag Team Championships and IWGP Tag Team Championships alongside Nick Aldis/Magnus in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Doug Williams

Doug Williams retired from the British scene back in 2018, losing to the aforementioned NXT UK Superstar Trent Seven in a PROGRESS ATLAS Title match at Wembley Arena. Williams stated that he would retire the moment that he lost the belt, and did until earlier this year where he confirmed that he would be entering the ring once again.

Williams has already performed for ICW and Rev Pro. The Ambassador of British Wrestling confirmed his return to the ring on Twitter earlier this year, writing “the events of the past year has made me reassess my decision to retire as it made me understand that you should use your life to fullest doing what you enjoy. As such I am open to bookings again, email is in my bio…”

Cara Noir vs Jody Fleisch Announced for PROGRESS Chapter 115

PROGRESS World Champion Cara Noir will be defending his title against British pro wrestling legend Jody Fleisch this weekend at the Chapter 115: For The Hearts That Never Played In Tune show.

Noir has defended his title since the return of the company in 2021, defeating the likes of Dan Moloney, Natural Progression Series winner Luke Jacobs, Kid Lykos and ELIJAH.

Jody Fleisch has been a staple on the UK independent wrestling scene since the early 2000s, as well as being one of the top high-flyers in the world during his illustrious career.

Fleisch has appeared for the likes of GCW, Ring of Honor and PWG, where he appeared as part of the BOLA tournament in 2018.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jody Fleisch said that he is looking forward to facing the reigning Champion.

“I’m really looking forward to my match with Cara. I’m on a good run of form for progress. I know I’m faster. I know I’m stronger. He’s a strange cat and he uses that to his advantage when he gets the chance but there really isn’t much in wrestling that haven’t seen and dealt with. Bring it on.”

PROGRESS World Title #1 Contenders Match Set for Chapter 115 – Exclusive

We can exclusively reveal that PROGRESS Wrestling will be holding a #1 Contender’s Match for the PROGRESS World Championship at the Chapter 115 event next weekend on Peacock and WWE Network.

The Smokin’ Aces Nick Riley and Charlie Sterling will face each other to determine who will be the next challenger to Cara Noir’s PROGRESS World Championship. We spoke to both men before the match to get their take on arguably their biggest match to date in PROGRESS, which will be available to view on Saturday July 17.

Charlie Sterling

“Its very strange that I’m asked to talk about fighting my best friend” Charlie Sterling noted. “Our families are close. We get the same praise and compliments. Athletic. Technically gifted. Resilient. He’s the greatest tag partner I could ask for. I’d do anything for him and I’d hope he would say the same. I know his favourite meal is Black Bean Curry and he knows mine is Spaghetti Bolognese. We are brothers!”

“Come Chapter 115 though, I will put all that aside. He won’t be my brother, he will just be my opponent” Sterling continued. “Nick will still be athletic. He will still be technically gifted. He will still be resilient. Everything that is said about me will still be true of him too. Except for one thing, one truth – Belief.”

“Nick will THINK he CAN beat me but I KNOW I WILL beat him” Charlie Sterling continued, laying in somewhat to his Smokin’ Aces partner in PROGRESS. “He will believe it too, when he’s defeated. However, when that bell rings and my hand is raised, I will put my arm around Nick, hug him close and thank him because we are still athletic. Still technically gifted, still resilient, still a team, still brothers.

“Chapter 115 will not be easy for either of us, but it’s necessary and we both know it.”

CHARLIE STERLING

Cara Noir

Charlie Sterling would also issue a warning to PROGRESS World Champion Cara Noir ahead of the match, saying that he is gunning for the phenom performer once Chapter 115 is said and done.

“Cara Noir needs to believe too – once I’ve beaten Nick? He’s in my sights. He may think putting us in this scenario will challenge us, it will only make us stronger. Give me an inch, I will take a mile. I’m coming for that World Title.”

Nick Riley

Here’s what Nick Riley had to say about fighting his tag team partner next weekend:

“Underrated and underused. The words most of the wrestling scene has used to describe Nick Riley and Charlie Sterling” Nick Riley began. “But now, we are in a position where one of us will fight for the PROGRESS World Championship.”

“No one has any idea of what this could do for me and Charlie, our families, our careers” Riley continued. “But what I do know, is my first title defence will be against Charlie Sterling.”

“Charlie, you are my best friend, my brother, my tag team partner…But for one match? You are the road block to greatness, and I’m knocking you down!” The Smokin’ Ace concluded.

“what I do know, is my first title defence will be against Charlie Sterling.”

PROGRESS Announce Doghouse Rules Match for Chapter 115 on Peacock

PROGRESS Wrestling have announced a big Tag Team Championship match for their upcoming Chapter 115 event on Peacock and WWE Network. Chapter 115: For The Hearts That Never Played In Tune will be available to stream on Saturday 17th July from 5pm BST.

The PROGRESS Tag Team Champions Kid Lykos and Kid Lykos II (Lykos Gym) will be defending the titles against the Big Money Gun Dogs (Gene Munny and Big Guns Joe). The Champions lost to the Gun Dogs in a non-title match at the last Chapter show when Gene Munny ‘locked’ both of the Champions inside of a travel bag for dogs (yes, really).

PROGRESS Tag Team Titles on The Line

The title will now be on the line in a Doghouse rules match. It’s not confirmed exactly what this is and what the rules for the match will be, however an influence for the match is reportedly the Kennel from Hell match between Big Boss Man and Al Snow from Unforgiven 1999.

If you’ve never seen the Kennel from Hell match, it’s a terrible, terrible gimmick bout that just did not work due to the live dogs used inside the kennel being scared infront of a live wrestling crowd.

This match however looks promising, with the ‘comedy’ tag team of Gene Munny and Big Guns Joe proving that they can go in the ring with Lykos Gym at the last Chapter and the Champions heading into a match where they’re likely to have the disadvantage.

PROGRESS Star Kanji Wants Jordynne Grace To Return To Challenge Her

PROGRESS Wrestling star Kanji has made a challenge to IMPACT Wrestling’s Jordynne Grace. Kanji will be attempting to win the PROGRESS Women’s Championship at Chapter 111: One Leg In The Air, and she said that Grace is a former Champion that she would like to see return to the company.

Kanji made the comments during a recent PROGRESS Media Call. “I’d love to see Jordynne Grace come back,” Kanji replied when asked who she would like to see return.

“I’d love to step in the ring with Jordynne Grace and have her come back with all the skills and abilities that she’s learned since having the belt previously” Kanji continued.

Jordynne Grace was previously the PROGRESS Women’s Champion after defeating NXT UK Superstar Jinny. Grace was eventually defeated by Meiko Satomura, who also has gone on to NXT UK. Satomura is also someone that the PROGRESS hopeful would like to see return to the company.

“I think definitely also get Meiko Satomura back” the UK star stated. “I think she could grace our ring again. That would be awesome.”

Gisele Shaw Calls Out Sasha Banks

PROGRESS Wrestling star Gisele Shaw has called out WWE Superstar Sasha Banks. During a recent PROGRESS Media Call, Shaw said that she has ‘heard’ that Banks wants to perform in a PROGRESS ring, and the ‘Quintessential Diva’ Shaw has said that she is ready for the challenge.

“My people told me that apparently Sasha Banks wants to come to PROGRESS” Gisele Shaw mentioned during the media call. “And if we can make that happen, then you know what? I’m open to a singles match.”

Previously, Shaw had called out Charlotte Flair on WWE’s The Bump on Wednesday. Shaw said that The Queen has won every Championship going, but she has never faced the Canadian star nor the PROGRESS Women’s Championship; which Jordynne Grace recently said was on par with the IMPACT title.
