Note On WWE’s Interest In Bringing Back Rey Mysterio & Maria Kanellis

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that the fact that the official WWE website recently ran articles on Rey Mysterio and Maria Kanellis is a notable sign of their interest in both talents.

In the case of Mysterio, it’s well known that WWE would like to get him back under contract both because they’re looking for top Hispanic stars and to prevent him from going to Lucha Underground.

As far as Kanellis is concerned, her Ring Of Honor contract, along with the ROH contracts of Michael Bennett and Matt Taven have expired. The Observer notes that it’s an interesting situation with these three, based on the fact that you have to factor in interest from New Japan Pro Wrestling, ROH and WWE, and which of the three talents those promotions would be interested in.

AAA Cancels Guerra De Titanes; Has No TV Tapings Scheduled

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNw08eDy0w0

AAA just announced on their official Facebook page that the December 4th Guerra de Titanes supercard has been cancelled:

This comes just two days after AAA announced Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Johnny Mundo as the main event for the recently vacated (by Alberto “El Patron” Del Rio) AAA Super Mega Heavyweight Championship. It’s not clear why this happened, with the press release being vague at best. It promises some kind of make-up card for the Tampico/Madero region down the line, but that’s about it. The issue is more complicated than “just” cancelling a major show, though, as pointed out by LuchaBlog’s Twitter account:

AAA now has no TV tapings on their schedule only has enough TV in the can to cover this coming weekend and the following weekend. They have cards that they could convert to TV tapings, and they’ve done things like that in the past. LuchaBlog also points out that we should learn more soon:

Rey Mysterio vs. Johnny Mundo To Determine Next AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion On 12/4

AAA will crown a new Mega Heavyweight Champion at the Guerra de Titanes event on December 4th at Feria de Tampico in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

The AAA Mega Heavyweight Title was vacated in October when the champion at the time, Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio), left the promotion and made a surprise return to WWE, defeating John Cena at the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view on October 25th to become the WWE United States Champion.

Initially, AAA Executive Vice President Dorian Roldan announced that Del Rio had forfeited the AAA Mega Heavyweight Title and a tournament would be held in December to crown a new champion. Instead, a one-on-one match between two former WWE Superstars will take place to determine the next title-holder.

The promotion announced a singles match between Rey Mysterio and Johnny Mundo (John Morrison) to determine the next AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion. The Mysterio-Mundo bout will headline their upcoming Guerra de Titanes event on December 4th.

Below is the full lineup for the AAA Guerra de Titanes event in Tampico on 12/4:

* AAA Mega Heavyweight Title Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Johnny Mundo
* The Psycho Circus vs. El Texano Jr, El Hijo del Fantasma and a mystery partner
* Blue Demon Jr, Electroshock & La Parka vs. Anarquia (Daga, El Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Steve Pain)
* Aerostar, Drago & Fenix vs. Brian Cage, Mesias & Taurus
* AAA Tag Title Match: Champions Jack Evans & Angelico vs. Joe Lider & Pentagon Jr. vs. Averno & Chessman
* Argenis & Dinastia & Fabi Apache vs. Willie Mack & Mini Charly Manson & Taya Valkyrie

Rey Mysterio Says He Didn’t Expect Del Rio To Return To WWE, But He’s Happy He Did

https://youtu.be/qb6rUzAAnUs

Rey Mysterio recently sat down with the folks at WrestleTalk TV and spoke about the recent surprise WWE return of Alberto Del Rio.

Mysterio admitted that he didn’t expect Del Rio to ever return to WWE, but explained why he is happy he did.

“I actually didn’t expect (it), but I’m glad he did,” Rey said during the interview, which you can watch above. “If you ever get the opportunity to go back, and that’s where you want to be, why not? Take advantage of your time. Your time is a blink of a second.”

Rey would elaborate, pointing out the small window of opportunity that wrestlers have to make a living, particularly on the WWE stage.

“I started at a very young age with WWE, and I was still in my prime,” Mysterio explained. “I enjoyed it so much, I have no regrets, and I’m enjoying my life as it is. He deserves to be there. They’re in lack of Latin talent, he’s a perfect Superstar to be an idol for the hispanic population.”

As noted recently, Mysterio said he is open to a WWE return if the opportunity were to ever present itself. Mysterio told the Gorilla Position Podcast the following regarding the possibility of returning to WWE:

“Never say never,” he said. “I didn’t leave on bad terms. There was no dispute or bad intention on me leaving. So, if there is an opportunity down the road and both parties agree to it, why not.”

Rey Mysterio Says He Wasn’t Ready For His First WWE Title Run

Rey Mysterio called into Busted Open Radio this week to remember Eddie Guerrero on the 10th anniversary of his passing. Mysterio said that he was not ready for his first WWE title run, but was thrust into that role after Eddie’s tragic death.

“No, especially not under those circumstances. I guess my career was heading in a different direction. We had just finished our feud with my son, Dominic, and the great story that Eddie put together and how much passion he threw behind that, that character that he was. He was ready to move on with Batista and I really don’t know where I was going, but that changed direction completely for, I believe, for everyone.

So I really wasn’t ready at the time, but of course you’ve got to make the best out of it. This was a big opportunity for me and the people knew. The people knew that it was going down for Eddie. I was put on the spot, but I was there representing Eddie.”

Creative Plans For Lucha Underground Season 2, Current Goal For The Company

https://youtu.be/Zn0O1In2438

There has been talk of featuring more of a “space alien” type of theme with more dramatics for the second season of Lucha Underground, which is scheduled to return next year.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the plan is to actually go even further into the “supernatural” direction for the storylines in the sophomore season of the show, which will return on Mark Burnett’s El Rey Network cable channel.

Additionally, the Observer reports that the long-term goal for Lucha Underground is to create at least one “super babyface star,” as well as some “monster heels” for a potential movie or series of movies. Apparently the promotion is looking to recreate something like the El Santo genre of movies, with Rey Mysterio possibly in the Santo role.

Filming for season two of Lucha Underground is scheduled to begin this Saturday, November 14th in Boyle Heights, and the season itself is expected to air on the El Rey Network in early 2016.

Rey Mysterio Says “Why Not?” To A Potential WWE Return

https://youtu.be/gYwpNBxHUeo

Rey Mysterio is open to a potential WWE return, despite the reduced schedule he’s currently enjoying while headlining shows in Mexico for AAA.

During an interview with the Gorilla Position Podcast, the lucha libre legend said he would get back in a WWE ring if the right opportunity presented itself.

“Never say never,” he said. “I didn’t leave on bad terms. There was no dispute or bad intention on me leaving. So, if there is an opportunity down the road and both parties agree to it, why not.”

Mysterio was plagued with injures during the final years of his WWE run. Working for AAA has given him the chance to work a lighter schedule as well as spend more time with his family.

“At this stage of my career and my personal life, I’m enjoying it (time off),” Mysterio said. “It’s what I want to do. I wanted to spend time with my kids and my wife, and I wanted my body to heal up. So, I’m going through that right now.”

AJ Styles Explains Why He Hasn’t Joined WWE, Talks NXT & CMLL, More

Former TNA World Champion AJ Styles recently appeared as a guest on The Taz Show: Bodyslams & Beyond podcast at Play.it, and during the discussion, Styles spoke about the possibility of joining NXT.

“At this point in my career, I’m going to go do what’s best for my family and I want to do what’s best to provide for them,” said Styles. “So, the business that we’re in, [if] the business could be better somewhere else, then that’s where I’m going to go. That’s what I’m going to do. So, like I said, it’s a business plan. Wherever the plan takes me, that’s where I’ll go.”

Later in the interview, Taz asked Styles about the possibility of going to CMLL in Mexico to wrestle Rey Mysterio.

“I’d like to wrestle Rey, Rey Mysterio, before he retires,” said Styles. “I think we could have a pretty cool match and it would be a pretty big match, the two of us, so I’d probably get that done.”

Styles continued, “I would imagine you would have to come off the hip with some money for Rey, but it would be fun! It depends where we do it. The problem is he works for AAA and I work for New Japan and New Japan works for CMLL, or works with CMLL, so that’s the big dilemma. It would have to be an independent [show] for us to meet.”

Mysterio wrote the following across the span of a few tweets:

“I had an incredible time performing in WWE [and] would love to thank everyone who saw me for the first time [and] became a fan! My life [and] career plans are heading in other directions. As for now I’m at a very comfortable stage, but we never know what the future holds for us! #Booyaka619”

Titus O’Neil Says There’s A “Tag-Team Revolution” In WWE Right Now

WWE Superstar Titus O’Neil of The Prime Time Players recently spoke with NZPWI to promote next week’s edition of WWE RAW. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On if there’s also a tag team revolution in WWE: “Yes, the tag team division is definitely loaded with a lot of talented teams, and a lot of talented individuals as well because sometimes we do have singles matches with the partner being out there. It’s a great time for the tag team division with The Dudley Boyz coming back – one of the most historically successful WWE tag teams in history, if not the most successful if you’re going by title reigns alone. It definitely gives a kick-start to a new season and a new era to the tag team division and hopefully we can continue to be a big fixture in that push for great tag team wrestling in WWE.”

On Batista getting him into wrestling: “Literally, I was driving down to South Tampa one day, picking up some dress shoes, and across the street was FCW. Since I was down there I called Dave [Batista] and said, ‘Hey, is this the place you were saying they practice at?’ and he said, ‘Yeah’ and I said, ‘Well I might go and poke my head in there and try to see what it’s about.’ I did, and two weeks later I was signed and learning to be a WWE Superstar.”

On a match he had with Rey Mysterio and why it’s one of his favorites: “I had the match with Rey Mysterio on an episode of SmackDown. It made it one of my favourite matches because, number one, I’ve always been a big fan of Rey Mysterio. It was a great learning experience for me. Rey was extremely, extremely professional with me. He guided me through, suggested things, let me do things with him that… it was just a really cool experience, a great learning experience from—I feel—one of the greatest performers of all time in WWE history.”

Reason For WWE Stacking Deck For Mexican Tour, Undertaker’s Return & More

WWE is pulling out a lot more stops than usual for their upcoming tour of Mexico, which has shows on October 16th in Merida, October 17th at Arena Ciudad in Mexico City and October 19th at Arena Monterrey.

WWE is building the tour around the fact that The Undertaker is working all three events, billing it as Undertaker’s return to Mexico after five years.

Additionally, WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair will be working the shows as the guest General Manager, and part-time WWE performer Chris Jericho is scheduled as well.

The reason they are building the shows up so strong is partially due to concerns of insinuations of racism against Mexicans related to the departure of Alberto Del Rio, as well as no longer having Rey Mysterio on the roster.

Rey Mysterio Said He Hesitated Returning To The Ring After Perro Aguayo Jr’s Death

Rey Mysterio told Dan Gelston of the AP that that he wants to honor the late Perro Aguayo Jr., who died in the ring, while the matches continued.

“It’s that Mexican mentality of wrestlers,” Mysterio said. “You do it because they’d want you to do it. You lace up, you throw your mask on and you go out there and perform. In your mind, you’re performing for the fans and you’re performing for them in heaven.”

Mysterio also admitted that he had some issues returning to the ring following Aguayo’s tragic death.

“It was hard to get back,” he said. “I was doubting myself. I didn’t know if this was what I wanted to continue to do or if I just needed a little bit of time. There were just so many mixed emotions. The people that I work with in the ring, they helped me out. The boys from AAA made me feel loved. They’ve helped me cope with it. The fans, the family, they all lent their hands of support. This is not the time to hang up the mask.”

Rey Mysterio Says His Health Is Incredible, Hypes TripleMania Match With Myzteziz

Former WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio was a guest on The LAW this past week to promote Sunday’s TripleMania PPV. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His match against Myzteziz this Sunday:

“I definitely think this is something that not only we wanted but the fans demanded. I think it will define our legacy. We both have similarities in our styles, in our outfit… Over the years he has spoke highly about how he has admired my career for so long. I saw him wrestle in Mexico & many times on TV & he was the future of Mexican wrestling at the time. It’s definitely a dream match – without a doubt. I know we’re gonna go out there & put everything on the line & give the fans exactly what they deserve.”

His health:

“It’s incredible. I’ve had a lot of time to heal up & my body is actually thanking me now for getting that opportunity to rest – to strengthen up my quads from all the damage over the years on my left knee. My right knee – thank God, knock on wood – it’s in great condition. Now I’ve just gotta stay in shape & keep doing what I love but on my own terms – not like in the early 30’s.”

The LAW: Live Audio Wrestling can be heard every Sunday night at 11pm ET on TSN 1050 Toronto, TSN 1410 Vancouver, SiriusXM 167 and online at liveaudiowrestling.com.

Rey Mysterio On Rumors About His WWE Departure, Being Booed At Royal Rumble, More

Rey Mysterio, who goes one-on-one with Myzteziz (aka the original Sin Cara) at this Sunday’s TripleMania XXIII event, which airs live on North American pay-per-view, recently appeared as a guest on Ring Rust Radio to promote the show. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On his upcoming TripleMania XXIII match against Myzteziz (Sin Cara): “Well that match between us is going to a legacy defining match. There is a lot of animosity and egos that are going to come into play that night. I have to point out that this match was made for the fans by the fans. The fans were the number one critiques on who is better? Rey Mysterio or Myzteziz. At one point I left Mexico to continue my career globally and a new star came about. He is known now as Myzteziz, but back then he was known as Mistico and then Sin Cara when he joined WWE. I would have to say the fans in their eyes see a lot of similarities between us. We even tagged at one point in the WWE and now here we are against each other thanks to the fans.”

On rumors about his WWE departure: “The initial meeting in Buffalo went well. Both parties, they agreed to continue to move forward on the Rey Mysterio brand. There was no rumors, no animosity, no bad feelings between us. I feel like resigning with the company due to the fact that I had a large amount of injuries on my body. That was the number one reason why I was on the bench so long. So when it came around to resigning, they were ok with me wanting to depart and do my own thing. There was no hard feelings and we departed in an amicable way. It was my time to think for myself and act upon myself and that was the best thing I had done for myself in years. I have had time to rest and my body feels a thousand times better. I’m calling my own shots and doing things I have never been able to do in my career. I never had the freedom to do them but now I do.”

On if he’s willing to return to WWE: “Yes of course. I think that’s what every wrestler would want, there’s nothing better than dictating your own future and not over working your body. You can’t keep running on fumes constantly when you are older. You don’t see the same Rey Mysterio you see when I was 25 years old. I think it’s good to understand from both ends that I can’t deliver the way I used to when I first signed with the WWE. To make sure talent last, you have to take care of it.”

On being booed at the 2014 WWE Royal Rumble: “No hard feelings at all. One thing I have learned through the years is I have never been political about certain things and I take things lightly through my whole life. At the moment, I couldn’t believe or understand what was going on. After the match I was able to sit down and digest what was going on, and sure enough it was the fact that the fans weren’t given what they wanted. At one point I remember talking to Konnan about it, thinking if they would of let me walk down to the ring, then when the fans were booing, let me go back into gorilla and give my spot to Daniel Bryan to be number 30.”

Rey Mysterio On Biggest Reason He Left WWE, Possibly Joining Lucha Underground

Longtime wrestling veteran Rey Mysterio recently spoke with the folks at Rolling Stone to promote the AAA “TripleMania XXIII” pay-per-view event scheduled for this Sunday, August 9th, live in North America. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On the past five months since leaving WWE: “I don’t regret any steps that I take in life. This is something that I’ve been looking forward to for a while. I really wanted to have some time off, without feeling any sort of commitment to be on a certain schedule. Now, I’m doing things my way, under my terms. I’m dictating my pace towards retirement. I’m not on the grind. I was constantly competing. This is a good thing for me. This is something that my wife and I thought would be best for my body and for myself. I get to be a husband and a father again. I get to enjoy time with my kids now. I was a workaholic for so many years. I’ve missed so many birthdays and anniversaries. Now that my kids are a bit older, I want to be around and I want to enjoy it. I want to send my kids off to college if that’s what they want to do. I want to do all the family things I’ve missed over the years.”

On the biggest reason he left WWE: “Family was the biggest reason. If anything, I’ll probably do appearances. I’m not trying to stay busy. I’m trying to enjoy my time at home and be around my kids. I want to vacation. I’m a big family guy. I want to do more with them. That was the primary reason that I stepped away. Opportunities are starting to arise. After 15 years, I didn’t know what was out there. I had been wrestling with WWE all that time and wasn’t focusing on anything outside of that. I’m realizing that there’s a lot of opportunities there. The question is just whether I want to take them.”

On his current relationship with WWE: “There’s definitely no hard feelings with WWE. I’m very thankful to them for the opportunity that was given to me. The lifestyle I have now is due to the success that I had there. There’s one thing that I’ve always been is appreciative of the opportunities that are given to me. I’ve always left every company that I’ve been with on good terms; WWE is no exception. I have no negative comments or feelings towards WWE at all.

As far as Konnan’s part in all this, he got a little overexcited. I’ve been very close to Konnan for many years now. I thank him for much of my success in this industry. He opened the doors for me in AAA, ECW and WCW. I’m very thankful. Even though we don’t see each other as much, we do talk a lot. He would hear many times that I was tired and constantly on the grind. I would pour my heart out to him on many occasions. When my term was coming up and that I was thinking about not re-signing, I told him about it, and I think he was just excited for me.”

On possibly joining Lucha Underground: “That’s something that I’m looking at right now. If the opportunity is right, if the negotiations go well and there’s an interest in both parties, then I’d definitely like to do that. I enjoy their show very much right now. That’s as close as it’s going to get, at least right now, to lucha libre in the U.S. I’m going back to my roots, this is what I thrive off of. It’s never too late, so if the opportunity comes about, and the offer is good, then I don’t see why not.”

Rey Mysterio Talks Possible WWE Return, Perro Aguayo’s Death & More

Rey Mysterio recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s “Extra Mustard” blog to promote the Northeast Wrestling events this weekend. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On the death of Perro Aguayo Jr. in March: “That something like that would even occur. You always think of the worst injury, but never that situation. In this case, it was absolutely that. We lost the biggest superstar that Mexico has ever seen. There were so many plans moving forward that would have been incredible. When I meet great people in this industry, I like to let them know they are great human beings. Perro was definitely one of them. He was so warm-hearted, kind, and respectful. Just like there will never be another Eddie, there will never be another Perro.”

On meeting Vince McMahon in 2002: “Meeting Vince was eye-opening. It was exciting for me to meet the man. Here I was, part of a company I thought I’d never be a part of because of my size, but Vince McMahon decided to bring me on board.”

“My only option was to succeed. I needed to prove that I could make it in the big leagues with my size and weight. But Vince was really cool right off the bat. He said they had big plans for me, and I was looking very forward to every single plan they had. My first night with WWE was coming in after a match with Chavo [Guererro]. He had me run down to the cage, climb up, and do a plancha off the top of the cage. No one knew how to market me like Vince McMahon.”

On taking time away from WWE and his departure: “My contract was coming to an end. I had been on the grind for so long, and even I was out for a long period of time due to surgery, I was constantly rehabbing. I never had the time to participate in my kids’ lives or be around my wife. So I really thought about it – I could be working until I’m 43, 44, or 45 years old, and keep on making money, but where is that going to leave me? I’ve already done good for myself, so I really needed a break. I wanted to detach myself from having a certain obligation. I wanted to do things on my terms. I wanted to rest, I wanted to enjoy my kids. I wasn’t getting any younger, and my kids weren’t getting any younger. I weighed my options, and leaving WWE was a decision my wife and I made together.

“I’m truly blessed to have a partner, a soulmate that’s been loyal and equal to me for all this time. She’s been a mother and a father throughout all the years me being on the grind, on the road. Now, I have control of my life and my career. Family has always been the number one importance in my life, and they’re the reason I decided I stepped away for a little while.”

On a possible WWE return: “I didn’t leave on bad terms. I left on good terms with WWE, so I don’t want to say never. They treated me very well, and I’m nothing but thankful with that company for letting Rey Mysterio be Rey Mysterio and be recognized worldwide. If the opportunity comes about in the future, and there is interest from both parties, then why not?”

Rey Mysterio Reveals Why He Left WWE

Rey Mysterio spoke to Channel Guide Magazine this week to promote AAA’s upcoming TripleMania 23 PPV on August 9th, where he’ll have his first-ever match against Myzteziz (the original Sin Cara in WWE).

Rey spoke about enjoying his freedom since leaving WWE earlier this year, which was a major factor in his decision to leave.

“I wanted my family time before anything else. Family to me comes first, especially now in this stage of my career. I knew that I wasn’t going to have a strong commitment to another company if I was going to sign with someone else. I wanted to do something on my own terms and call my own shots. That time came. I’m doing a couple of events for AAA and independent work. Not too much wresting, but signings and appearances. I think the second major factor in this is I have been on the grind doing this for 25 years. So my body needed to rest without a doubt.”

Regarding his upcoming ‘dream match’ with Myzteziz, Mysterio says fans have been wondering which of them is the top luchador in the world and it’s time to answer that question.

“I think there is a lot of similarities and comparisons to me and him,” Mysterio said. “There is a certain similarity with the style. Here is where the rumors take place with the contact lenses. There were rumors he had said I was copying it from him. At the end of the day he is a great performer. I admire him for his skills. I think once Mexico had stars taken away from AAA like Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Konnan and myself. We all took our careers into WCW and many in WWE.

“This new star was born. Now there is talk who is better. It’s a dream match. After all the gossip and rumors, this match is finally happening. It’s due to the fans that saw something in each of us. It’s time to show who is the best.”

There’s much more, including Rey’s thoughts on wrestling for AAA and his desire to branch out into acting and even comic books. To read the full interview, visit ChannelGuideMagBlog.com.
