Rey Mysterio Signs Significant Deal To Promote Hollywood Blockbusters In Mexico

As reported last week, former WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio performed a Terminator-themed ring entrance at the AAA iPPV event in Mexico, one that many who saw it say it was better than the one Triple H did at WrestleMania.

Mysterio has actually signed a deal with Paramount Pictures in Mexico to work as an ambassador.

Prior to movies airing in theaters across Mexico, there are clips shown that feature Mysterio giving a personal introduction.

Mysterio is scheduled to do similar introductions for the upcoming movies Mission Impossible, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers.

TNA Making Strong Push To Sign Rey Mysterio

In the past year, TNA has reportedly made a legitimate attempt to sign multiple top-tier former WWE Superstars, such as Edge, Alberto El Patron and CM Punk. Apparently the promotion is currently focused on trying to sign one major talent that recently officially parted ways with the company.

According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, TNA is in the process of making a big play for former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio.

TNA reportedly tried to sign Mysterio just this past week, as both Dixie Carter and John Gaburick spoke with him about the possibility of signing with the company.

According to one source, both TNA executives tried to push the idea that they could get Mysterio’s merchandise into stores and assist him in getting television and film work.

Additionally, Carter and Gaburick gave Mysterio the impression that they would build TNA around him as the company’s long sought after Hispanic star. They reportedly told him that the deal would be a non-exclusive deal, as he would still be allowed to work for other promotions on days that do not conflict with TNA’s schedule.

For what it’s worth, the belief is that Mysterio will still be signing a contract to officially join Lucha Underground in the near future.

Below are some photos and videos of Mysterio’s new look and entrance.

Alexa Bliss On Being Influenced By Trish Stratus, Emulating Rey Mysterio & More

NXT Diva Alexa Bliss recently spoke with 614Columbus.com to promote this week’s NXT live event in her hometown. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On what she’s learned about wrestling that she didn’t know before entering the business: “When I watching wrestling, I watched it for more of the moves and to see the drama of the show, but when you actually start wrestling, there’s so much that goes into it. It’s an artform. It’s a lifestyle, it’s an art that you have to master and there’s just so much to learn. You can do it for years and years and years, and still learn new things every single day. It’s seriously one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever participated in…[getting started] I had no idea what to expect. It was like, ‘Whoa, this is all happening so fast.’ I get down here. My first day, I watch practice. My second day, I learn how to do bumps [Ed. note: falling correctly to limit injuries]. I just remembered watching wrestling thinking, ‘I wonder if that ring really is as hard as it looks.’ It is. [laughs] It really is. It’s not soft. I remember taking bumps and being like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I called my mom. I was laying on a bed of ice telling her how much pain I was in. I was just like, ‘My body is not prepared for this, and she’s like, ‘Well, you wanted to be a Diva!’ [laughs].”

On saying she emulates Rey Mysterio and who else she has studied: “Trish Stratus for sure. I really liked watching her. Me and my family loved the Hardyz and Lita. I tried to have a little bit of snappiness to my moves like Lita did, but mostly, I really liked watching Rey and how he moved because of his size. I knew if I ever wanted to do this, I was probably not going to be the tallest gal or the biggest one in the ring. I really looked up to Trish because she was also a smaller framed girl. I believe my size actually helps me because I like to go for the element of surprise [Laughs] where people don’t expect much of me because of my size and stature. I like to shock people as well with the over-the-top personality.”

On why she chose pro wrestling instead of a sports or entertainment field: “It was because I felt like I was kind of at home. [Wrestling] was something that me and my family always got together and bonded over, so when the opportunity came, I was like, ‘That’s what I should be doing.’ If any other opportunity like acting comes along, that’s great, but as soon as I saw this opportunity, I was like, ‘That’s what I’m meant to do.’ All of my cheerleading and gymnastics and bodybuilding and training prep have prepared me for what I truly believe in my heart was this.”

Major Update On Lucha Underground’s Future, Rumored TV Deals, Mysterio & Alberto

While a second season of Luhca Underground has yet to be confirmed, almost everybody in the company is under the impression that it will be happening. Lucha Underground currently has episodes taped through August, including the Ultimo Lucha 2-hour season finale that’s gotten rave reviews from fans who were in attendance.

The working plan is for season 2 episodes to keep a similar production schedule as last year, with the first episodes of the new season being taped in September and a late September/early October premiere.

Rey Mysterio and Alberto El Patron are expected to be the new faces of the promotion from a marketing standpoint, due to their star power in the United States in Mexico.

There is also talk of holding tapings on the road, with Texas being discussed as well as other locations in the south west. Production expenses remain a big issue for the promotion. While the show has been critically acclaimed, the ad revenue based on the current level of TV exposure is not covering their costs.

Lucha Underground continues to push for more TV deals, hoping to get on Univision in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico. A deal with Televisa would be a game changer, which would make Lucha Underground more accessible in Mexico than even AAA.

A deal with Univision would make Lucha Underground the number two national promotion in the United States, available in more homes than Impact Wrestling. Granted these would be Spanish-language broadcasts (El Rey continuing to air the English shows), but landing one or both of these new TV deals will be a huge victory for them.

– WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross’ “RINGSIDE: An Evening with Jim Ross” one-man show will be going head-to-head with the Ring Of Honor event on August 22nd in New York City during SummerSlam weekend. Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday at the Gramercy Theatre and on Ticketmaster.

Update On Rey Mysterio’s Lucha Underground Status, Possible RAW & Extreme Rules Spoiler

– WWE is teasing that Sheamus, who returned as a heel at last week’s RAW, may be the first Superstar to challenge WWE Intercontinental Champion Daniel Bryan on this Monday’s show in Austin, Texas. You can watch highlights from the Rey Mysterio Q&A at WaleMania above.

Spoiler Update On Triple H’s WM31 Entrance, Rey Mysterio Confirms That He Is Not Retiring

– As reported recently, WWE reached a deal with Paramount Pictures, part of which calls for Triple H to use imagery from the new Arnold Schwarzenegger “Terminator: Genisys” film for his WrestleMania 31 ring entrance. The word coming out of Santa Clara, California is that fans will get to see a “full-blown Terminator entrance” from “The Game,” including HHH wearing the trademark Terminator black leather jacket.

– Despite reports earlier today, Rey Mysterio made it clear during his appearance at WaleMania in San Jose, California this evening that he has no intentions of retiring from the ring. Rey Mysterio Releases Statement On Tragic Passing Of Perro Aguayo Jr.

Rey Mysterio took to Twitter on Saturday to post his comments on the tragic death of Mexican wrestling legend El Hijo del Perro Aguayo (Perro Aguayo Jr.), who passed away shortly after a terrible accident in a match involving Rey Mysterio on Friday evening.

Below are Mysterio’s tweets in Spanish, along with a translated version in English, courtesy of SEScoops.com reader Eddie Gomez.

“A brotherhood had just begun to form between a friendship that started years ago[. And] we shouldn’t question God’s plans. But on this occasion I ask why[. I] don’t understand, I’ll miss you and I’ll take you with me for the rest of my life, RIP HijoDelPerro.

With all the respect in the WORLD my biggest sentiments to the family Aguayo, I’ll ask God that he fill us with strength and deference to support this great loss! May God bless you all, and may He fill us with strength!”

Update On Rey Mysterio’s Lucha Underground Status, How Long He Has Left In The Ring

Although Rey Mysterio is still expected to debut with Lucha Underground at their television tapings this weekend, he has yet to finalize his deal as of this week.

Mysterio is looking to wrestle a limited schedule due to his knee issues. His feeling is that if he picks and chooses his dates, he could last another three or four years in the ring, whereas if he works a regular schedule, he likely doesn’t have a lot of time left.

As things stand now, the belief is that the majority of Mysterio’s bookings will be either in AAA in Mexico or Lucha Underground.

Additionally, Mysterio has been pitched the idea of having his own merchandise line separate from any specific wrestling company. The products would be targeting Latinos and children.

Bully Ray Talks Possibly Working In NXT, Samoa Joe/WWE, Rey Mysterio Leaving WWE

Bully Ray spoke with Alex Obert of the Journey of a Frontman website while at Tommy Dreamer’s “House of Hardcore VIII” event in Philadelphia last weekend. Below are highlights from the interview.

On returning at the WWE Royal Rumble: “Well the Royal Rumble is a lot of fun. As far as the reaction was concerned, it was awesome. To be able to come back to Philadelphia ten years after I had left the WWE to that type of reception, you really can’t put any words to it. I kind of knew in the back of my head that I was gonna get a warm reception from the Philly crowd. Some people might of been shocked just how big the reaction was. It was overwhelmingly positive. If that was my last time that you ever saw me in a WWE ring again, not that I’m saying that I want it to be, but if that was the last time that you ever saw me, that’s a hell of a way to go out!”

On being in the ring with Luke Harper and Bray Wyatt: “I’m a big fan of those guys. I’m a big fan of most guys in the WWE, they’re all extremely passionate about what they do. You can tell that they whenever they go out there, they always strive to be the best and steal the show and do the absolute best that they can. The Wyatt Family is kind of reminiscent of the old Dudley clan back in the day. Big fan of Bray. Big fan of Luke and Erick Rowan. They’re doing a great job. It was fun to be in there with The Miz. It was fun to be in there with R-Truth doing the What’s Up and the 3D. It was all good, lots of fun.”

On possibly appearing at NXT: “I am open to anything that is fun and that would be good business. Me and D-Von have accomplished so much as a tag team and I’ve accomplished more than I thought I ever would as a singles guy. If you listen to the fans, they would love to see the Dudley Boyz back in the WWE and help bring that tag team division back to the heights that it once was. Our school is going on almost ten years now and we’ve been very proud of the students that we turn out. We are very proud of the way we train our students. On a whole, I’m really happy with the way everything has unfolded so far.”

On Rey Mysterio leaving WWE: “Whenever people leave a company or go to a company, everyone will ask what my thoughts are. It goes on every day. People come and go from companies every day, whether it’s wrestling or a bank or a big business or McDonald’s, people come and go all the time. When one person stays in a company for too long, they can sometimes get stagnant or stale. So it’s good because with Rey leaving WWE now, maybe he’ll go do some stuff that will light a fire under his ass even more. And now that opens up a spot for a younger guy in WWE to step up and become the next Rey Mysterio. It’s always good for the business when people come and go and rosters constantly get mixed up.”

On Samoa Joe possibly going to WWE: “That’s awesome for Joe. Great! I would love to see Joe be ultra successful in the wrestling business. WWE is the top of the food chain. When you get into pro wrestling, everybody always wants to wrestle for the WWE. Joe went to Ring of Honor, helped build Ring of Honor and he paid his dues there. He went to TNA and helped build TNA, paid his dues. Now he’s gonna have an opportunity with the WWE and I hope he knocks it out of the park. He’s worked very hard and he deserves it.”

Curt Hawkins Talks Training Under Bill DeMott, Rey Mysterio Leaving WWE & More

Former WWE Superstar Curt Hawkins (Brian Myers) recently spoke with Alex Obert of the Journey of a Frontman website while at Tommy Dreamer’s “House Of Hardcore VIII” event in Philadelphia last weekend. Below are highlights from the interview.

On what he took out of House of Hardcore VIII: “Probably the most fun and most unpredictable good time that any wrestling fan could ever have at a show. I have a blast doing this because I love it. It’s my job and all that, but sometimes these shows are so fun and exciting, I almost wish I could go back in time and somehow be sixteen and go to these shows. It reminds me of how much fun ECW was when I went to the shows live as a kid.”

On Rey Mysterio leaving WWE and appearing at HOH: “Rey Mysterio is hands down the greatest luchador of all time. If you want to dispute that, tweet me. I don’t think anyone else is comparable. He’s the most successful, he’s the most talented, he is an absolutely special performer. I think it’s a huge loss for WWE and a huge gain for all of us wrestlers that get to be around him and have him on our shows and learn from him and work with him. It’s just a win.”

On the Bill DeMott controversy: “I trained under Bill and he is what he is. He’s a drill sergeant and he’s tough, it takes a lot out of you. I wasn’t there for all the new allegations, so I’m not too sure what happened.”

On Zack Ryder being in the Royal Rumble: “I hope the world of him, I’m always pushing for him. He deserves it. He’s a great guy. I don’t think we’d be anywhere without each other. We were very fortunate to find each other and go through this business together. I’m thrilled to see him and I’m glad to see he got the reaction that he got. I always hope for the best.”

ROH In Talks With Spike TV, Mysterio’s AAA Return Postponed

– Sunday night’s AAA Rey de Reyes iPPV was postponed to Monday night at 8pm due to extreme rain in Guadalajara. AAA President Joaquin Roldan announced the change with the roster in the ring last night.

Rey Mysterio was scheduled to make his AAA return when he teamed with Myzteziz, the original Sin Cara.

– Spike TV President Kevin Kay recently spoke to the Boston Herald about the network’s new “Friday Night Lights Out” block of combat sports programming. When asked about whether Ring of Honor would be a good fit for the rebranded network, Kay said they’ve had some preliminary talks with them:

“I’m not sure there is a deal there. We’re just kind of getting to know each other. .?.?. I think for Spike, the big question is, do we want to get into the professional wrestling business in any way? And I don’t have the answer to that yet. I don’t know that we’re going to do anything there, but if we do something, it’s probably not part of ‘Friday Night Lights Out.’ We want to keep that for real sports.”

Johnny Mundo On Rey Mysterio To Lucha Underground, Joey Mercury/WWE, Alberto El Patron

Johnny Mundo (formerly known as John Morrison) recently appeared on the Pro Wrestling Experience podcast to talk about a number of Lucha Underground related topics. Below are highlights from the interview.

On his experience at Lucha Underground: “Loving it. It’s a combination of lucha libre mix-in with American style pro wrestling and gridy action films. Three things that I like Action, Wrestling and Storytelling. The roster is like the best roster in the world as far as talent goes and everybody backstage is getting along well for a start up federation and it’s seems to continue to find it’s identity each week. Its exciting to be there, the show are great and continuing to improve and the roster is coming to it’s own and we’re continuing to define what Lucha Underground is each week!”

On his thoughts about Rey Mysterio joining AAA and possibly joining Lucha Underground: “I hope he comes to Lucha Underground for selfish reasons because I want to wrestle him. Rey is at a point in his career where he’s done everything and the next thing Rey does is going to be because he wants to do it and hopefully it is with Lucha Underground. I loved hanging out with him and wrestling him and the fans do as well so I think that would be really rad.”

On Alberto El Patron: “I had a bunch of matches with him when we were in WWE, but a lot of them were short tv matches. I’m really looking forward to having a ppv style produced match with him. He’s super talented and super nice guy. Had alot of fun with him on some Florida tours. When he and I get in the ring together we’re going to show what we can do.”

On his former tag team partner Joey Mercury being part of major storylines in the WWE right now: “Couldn’t be happier for him. When I was watching him in the ring with Jon Stewart the other night I was falling out laughing it was awesome. I couldn’t be happier for Joey that guy eat, sleeps and breathes wrestling. He was a genius in psychology when I met him 12 years ago and he’s been improving his game ever since then.”

On who he had the most chemistry in the ring with during his time in WWE: “CM Punk, The Miz, Jeff Hardy, Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler”

On his favorite WrestleMania Match: “WrestleMania 24’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match absolutely for the fact that it was first time I had a spotlight on myself on such a grand stage, but also getting to be in the ring with such incredible talent in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, so yea that’s the one for me.”

Alberto El Patron Talks Rey Mysterio Coming To Lucha Underground, Ricardo Rodriguez & More

Alberto El Patron recently spoke with the folks at Ring Rust Radio to talk about a number of Lucha Underground related topics. Below are highlights from the interview.

On Lucha Underground’s instant impact and whether it can become a viable contender with the top wrestling companies in the United States: “Oh, yes, of course. Lucha Underground is a fantastic product. They have the right people talent and backing up the product. I am 100 percent sure that this company is going to be one of the top three wrestling companies around the World at the end of this year.”

On the the major differences that help set Lucha Underground apart and make it so unique: “Lucha Underground is different than basic Mexican lucha libre. They are combing all the great styles out there into one. They are taking the best out of the Japanese, American, and lucha libre style and making them into one. It’s one unique style that all the fans are enjoying. I have been dong the wrestling shows all over the world. People are stopping me and telling me how much they enjoy the product and how different it is. The fans said they have been waiting for something like this that they can watch and enjoy every week.”

On pressure to be the top star: “I never put pressure on myself because I know who I am and where I come from. Everybody knows I work every single day, I never rest, and I always work to give my best to the fans. At the end of the day, we work for the fans. They are the ones buying the tickets and watching us on TV so we can get our paychecks at the end of the week.”

On what can wrestling fans expect from El Texano Jr and what separates him from the rest of the stars in the company: “He is a fantastic wrestler with a great background in Mexican lucha libre. He has been wrestling for 15 years now and started in Mexico and then went to Japan. He spent like 5 or 6 years working for New Japan which is the biggest company out there. He is a second generation wrestler who was born in this business just like myself. He is one of the major superstars in Mexico and they can expect a lot from him. Not only from him, but all the wrestlers in Lucha Underground. We have new names, new characters, and all these fantastic performers. They were stars in other companies and they are here in Underground to help us make us the best company in the World.”

On whether he enjoys being a heel or a babyface: “I love being the bad guy. Everybody loves the bad guy including the chicks. That’s a place where I would like to but at the end of the day I’m going to be what the fans want me to be or where they put me. When I left the other company, they decided to put me in the good guy side. I have been working as a baby face since then. I’m not going to say I am not enjoying it but I do. If you would ask me, though, I would love to be a bad guy again.”

On how or when he decides which type of style you’re going to wrestle on a given night: “I’m one of those wrestlers that leaves everything to the audience and to the fans. I never plan anything and you will never see Alberto Patron planning in the back what he is going to do in the match. I always go out there, listen to the crowd and the fans, and give them what they want. If you plan something in the back, you go out there, and the fans don’t want what the fans last night wanted you are done. You won’t be able to give them a good show and a match. I always go out there and listen to the crowd, and depending on what they want that’s what I do.”

On how Rey Mysterio would be welcomed in Lucha Underground: “It would be fantastic! I don’t know if he is going to join or not because he already joined AAA in Mexico. We know that AAA and Lucha Underground are partners. That pretty much tells me we will see Rey Mysterio at some point in the future and it will be fantastic. We already have a great product and having Rey Mysterio joining the company would make it one thousand times better. We already have the Latinos watching Lucha Underground. Now we will have superstars like Rey Mysterio and Alberto Patron that will make the American fans turnaround and watch the program because they know us from other companies.”

On whether he could reunite with Ricardo Rodriguez in Lucha Underground: “Well, never say never. I have been trying to bring Ricardo to every organization I have worked with but I do not make the final decisions. I always talk about Ricardo with others but at the end of the day they are paying the bills and make that decision. In Ricardo’s situation, I know Lucha Underground already talked to him but nothing happened. I would love to have him on the roster. I wouldn’t want him the way he was before like the other company because he was like my servant. He is not my servant, he is my friend, and I would love to see him do well and showcase his talent in a company like Lucha Underground.”

On working for House of Hardcore: “That was a really good experience. The other day, I saw an interview with Tommy Dreamer about what happened that night with me. They thought I was not going to go, so they invited Ricardo who agreed. When they asked Ricardo to ask me I immediately said yes. I am a big fan of what that arena and company represent. I spoke from the heart and the fans loved it and were happy with what I had to say. Since that day, everyone has talked about my promos and how much love and passion I have for this business. I was the same guy working for the other company, the love and passion was there, but I was following directions. Now I am in a different place and I am happy and the fans are happy to see a different Alberto.”

On what he feels is most special about Lucha Underground and what he has in store for fans moving forward: “We have a product that is totally different than anything else. We are combing the best of everything in the wrestling world and putting it in one single place that is Lucha Underground. All the talent working for Lucha Underground is thirsty and hungry. They want to show the world that they can do it. Most of them tried to join the so called major company. Even though they have a lot of talent, for some reason or politics they were told no. They want to prove to the World that they are the some of the best wrestlers in the World. When people like myself and if Rey joins, we want to prove to the World that we are a 1,000 times better than what they saw in the other company. We still have something to offer and will help this company to grow and be the best out there. With all the help of the media, the writers, producers, and wrestlers in Lucha Underground we will be able to show them.”
