Ric Flair On How He Influenced The Rock’s Persona

WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair recently did an interview with NBC Sports Radio to talk about a variety of professional wrestling topics. “The Nature Boy” talked about his promo skills and the late-great Dusty Rhodes being the first to give him some competition, how he influenced the personas of The Rock and many other WWE Superstars, and who deserves credit for the idea of The Four Horsemen. Here are the highlights:

His promo skills and Dusty Rhodes giving him some competition:

“That all came off the top of my head. We’d be out in Atlanta [Georgia] all night long, back at the hotel around 5 a.m., change clothes, and go to the studio and start taping at 9 o’clock. That’s just a lot of coffee and a lot of liking what I was doing for a living, being surrounded by guys like Dusty and Arn [Anderson] and guys that had so much influence on me. And we went out there and we competed with each other. Does that make sense? If Dusty was out there first, I knew I had to follow that. If I was on first and Dusty had to follow me. It was very competitive.”

How he influenced The Rock’s persona and many other WWE Superstars:

“I think he’ll admit that a lot of me was him,” Flair said. “I don’t know how many Rolex watches I’ve sold for Rolex from guys buying their first Rolex. I can remember Randy Orton got his first big check with Evolution. The first thing he bought was a new tricked out diamond encrusted Rolex, so I know that I’ve done some damage. I think a lot of guys have become more wardrobe-conscious. Does that make sense? Looking the part all of the time as opposed to when you’re in the gym. Every time you walk into a door, you want everybody in the joint to look at you. That’s just what it is.”

Arn Anderson deserving all the credit for the Four Horsemen idea:

“Actually, the idea for The Four Horsemen came from Arn, just something he said one day about The Four Horsemen. I can’t remember the terminology, but he put up [the] four [hand gesture] and Arn did it and we started doing it each week and within a month it caught on and it was bigger than ever. It was huge, so I give all that to Arn. He took the ball and he ran with it.”

(Photo) Ric Flair’s Pro Wrestling Mount Rushmore, Linda McMahon Talks Building WWE From Scratch

– Two-time WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair took to Twitter to post a picture of what he believes is the Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling. Alongside himself, “The Nature Boy” listed “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and Hulk Hogan:

– Linda McMahon recently spoke to the New Haven Register for a piece on women entrepreneurs. McMahon discussed her family going bankrupt and how she needed to build WWE from the ground up:

“That was really a tough time, especially because I was pregnant with our second child,” McMahon said. “We lost our home; my car was repossessed in the driveway. We were knocked down, but we were not defeated. We got right back to work starting over, building our business from scratch.”

Ric Flair On His Health, Sacrifices He Made To Be The Best, Bedding 10,000 Women

Ric Flair spoke with NBC Sports Radio to promote his and Charlotte’s new book, Second Nature: The Legacy of Ric Flair and the Rise of Charlotte, now available from Amazon.com

During the discussion, Flair gave an update on his health, his sacrifices he had to make to be the best wrestler in the world, his upcoming ESPN 30 For 30 documentary and his recent claim that around 10,000 women have taken a ride on Space Mountain.

Here are the highlights of what the Nature Boy said about:

His Health: “Believe it or not, I feel great right now. This health issue, self-inflicted, I mean, I had two rotator cuff surgeries, but they are both… I [am] pain-free. I don’t have any hip injuries. All my guys, literally, all my guys from my generation that are still alive got hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow replacements. I’m really good in that respect. I have a beautiful, new fiancé that I’ve been with for five years, and I can tell you honestly I haven’t naitched in five years, so you can put that down in the headlines. ‘Naitch’ no more, but I feel great. I guess the plane crash was the worst thing that happened to me. I don’t remember that, but I remember [medical personnel] saying, ‘I think we’re goingto lose this one’ and I think they were talking about me.”

His ESPN 30 For 30 Documentary: “I guess I like the fact that I’m about as open and honest with things that involved my children, my son that passed away, and I hope that the people understand that didn’t understand the work. In 20 years, I never had a day off. Twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday and that’s not an exaggeration. And most of the time, I’d wrestle an hour every night or two hours on the same day. And that’s a lot of traveling, a lot of wrestling. Tokyo [Japan] one night, back to St. Louis [Missouri], Sydney, Australia the next night, Auckland, New Zealand, over to Japan, back home for a week, and then back in Japan.”

The Sacrifice He Made To Be The Best: “That’s the life I lived, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I would trade it for the time now when I look back. I know my son is still very upset and angry and that’s something I have to live with, but he’ll never get over the fact that I wasn’t around enough.” Flair added, “I’ll take the blame for it. I was very selfish. I wanted to be the best and I competed against myself because I knew I was that much better than everybody else.”

Claims That He’s Slept With 10,000 Women: “Well, if you do the math, I started when I was in seventh grade!” Flair laughed, “let me say that hypothetically, I slept with five people. You’d go to your friend next door and go, ‘bulls–t!’ If I had said, ‘250,’ you’d go, ‘bulls–t.’ If I said, ‘5,000,’ you’d say, ‘oh, maybe.’ I’m not far off on that number. It doesn’t mean that everybody was Marilyn Monroe by any means, but I’m not far off. I wrestled. I was really good at three things: I wrestled, drinking, and talking, saying ‘goodnight.’”

New Details On ESPN’s 30 For 30 Special On Ric Flair

Sports Illustrated has an in-depth look at ESPN’s 30 For 30 special on WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, which premieres on Tuesday, November 7th at 10pm EST on ESPN.

The preview confirms that the special features interviews with Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Sting, The Undertaker, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Jim Ross, Flair’s first wife Leslie Jacobs, all three of Flair’s living children and more. A total of 46 people were interviewed for the documentary.

Director Rory Karpf noted that the content he got from Steamboat, Michaels and Hogan was “particularly compelling.” Karpf also noted that the only people from the wrestling world that he wanted for the film but failed to land were The Rock, Paul Heyman and Steve Austin.

The special also features multiple interviews with The Nature Boy himself. Filming with Flair took place over a two-year period. Filming began in September 2015 and post-production ended this month. Karpf noted that Flair’s recent hospitalization will be addressed in a director’s statement that will run as an intersitial between segments.

Karpf screened the film for Flair several weeks ago while he was recovering in an Atlanta hospital. Flair is planning on being at the premiere in Atlanta next month. Karpf said, “He really liked it a lot and feels it is an honest portrayal of him. It has the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Charlotte Reveals Ric Flair Did Not Recognize Her After Surgery

Charlotte was a guest on the latest Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast and spoke at length about her father Ric Flair’s recent medical emergency, Ric not remembering her after surgery and doing his famous strut while in the intensive care unit.

Here are some highlights of what Charlotte said about:

Finding Out Her Father Was Sick:

“I had just got back from China. I got there and I was like, okay I know it’s serious and the doctor was honest with us and said that my dad wasn’t breathing on his own and they didn’t want to do the surgery, but if they didn’t do the surgery then he was going to die. But they couldn’t say he was going to make it out of the surgery and his chances weren’t great so she told us to say our goodbyes. Me and my sister and my brother were like what the ….. How do you say goodbye to someone who wasn’t there? With my dad it’s like he is unbreakable so you don’t take it serious, but knowing that my dad never gets sick we were like okay, something is wrong.”

Ric Flair Not Recognizing Her After Surgery & Strutting in the ICU:

“When he was first taken off the machine and the doctors wanted to have him walk around, obviously he needed help and support but he didn’t even know who I was, and he was just pushing the walker and quoting numbers of towns from shows in the 80’s. I was like, that’s great he can quote me the numbers from a show in Chicago in the 80’s but he doesn’t know who I am? I would just sit there and listen to him quote the numbers and was just like this is crazy.”

“So, he is pushing the walker with the nurses and he is pushing and pushing and then he just stops and starts strutting in the ICU. He doesn’t know who I am, isn’t really talking but just does the strut and I was just like this isn’t real. When his 30 for 30 comes out in November, you will realize wrestling is my dad’s first love and that’s what he lives for. That’s why I think we are so close because now I am in the industry that he loves so much so I get it, I get wanting to be the main event every night.”

Charlotte also spoke about being embarrassed by her two marriages and wanting to be more like her television character.

Being Embarrassed by Her Previous Marriages & Wanting to be More Like Her TV Character:

“I am open and honest about it but it’s really hard when people on social media are like ‘oh she’s just like her dad, married twice.’ I’m embarrassed of that, I am. I thought what is the best way to overcome it and that’s to talk about it and I can’t change it, and when people say she’s just like her dad, they don’t know. I journaled about it and it was therapeutic…

Charlotte the character, I want to be Charlotte, that’s the funny thing, when I come through the curtain I want to be her. I tell people all the time if I could have that confidence in everyday life it would be different.”

Charlotte on playing a “good guy” or “bad guy”

“I wasn’t thinking about being a good guy or a bad guy and that has been the transition for me on SmackDown, do you want me to be this good guy? Oh no, when I first heard that, you know where I went? I’ve just left NXT, I’m respected, not loved, what’s going to happen to my character again? Obviously having my on-screen friendship with Becky, because she is the most natural babyface I think that’s helped.

I am just going on camera just being me and bringing in Charlotte a little bit and then not caring anymore. It’s like okay, well The Boss is still the Boss but guess what, she is the most popular, and just being okay with that, and not worrying if they respect you, you’re getting a reaction.”

Atlanta Falcons Pay Tribute To Ric Flair With Custom Cleats

The NFL’s Atlanta Falcons were stylin’ and profilin’ for their Sunday afternoon game against the Buffalo Bills.

Ric Flair Admits Nearly 10,000 Women Rode Space Mountain

Space Mountain might be the oldest ride in the park, but it’s got the longest line. Based on what Ric Flair said while shooting his “30 for 30” ESPN special, it really was a very, very long line.

According to TMZ.com, Flair admitted that he’s slept with approximately 10,000 women during his legendary wrestling career.  Despite the confession, told People TV,  “I wish I hadn’t said that because of my grandkids.” He added, “I only love one now” – a reference to his fiancée, Wendy Barlow.

Ric Flair Vows To Never Drink Again

Earlier this week, People Magazine published their recent sit-down interview with WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who spoke about his recent medical emergency and the decades of hard living that triggered his health issues. You can watch the video over at People.com.

People sent in a follow-up press release, revealing new details about Flair’s struggle with alcoholism. After a failed rehab stint a few years back, Flair has come to terms with the reality that he is an alcoholic and vows to never drink again.

PEOPLE Exclusive – Wrestling Legend Ric Flair Fighting for His Life After Decades of Alcohol Abuse: Health Scare Tamed ‘Nature Boy’

(NEW YORK) – Wrestling legend Ric Flair may have once commanded the ring – but after the cameras turned off, things “just got out of control.”

Decades of “social” drinking finally caught up with the 16-time pro wrestling world champion this year, landing him in the hospital and near death last month.

“I crashed in an airplane and broke my back, I’ve been hit by lightning,” Flair tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “But this is totally different. Anything I’ve been through before is nothing like this.”

On Aug. 11, the 68-year-old was rushed to the hospital with stomach pains. Within hours, Flair was in the early stages of kidney failure and on the verge of congestive heart failure – the result of years of alcohol abuse.

Flair’s family members were told he had only 20 percent odds of surviving, and he was placed in a medically induced coma while they – including daughter, pro wrestler Charlotte Flair – took to social media to asks fans for prayers.

Doctors subsequently removed part of Flair’s bowel, and inserted a pacemaker. Now, in recovery at a convalescent center in Atlanta, Flair tells PEOPLE of the entire ordeal, “It scared the s— out of me.”

He adds, “But I’m not out of the woods yet.”

Now, the man once known as the “Nature Boy,” needs a nurse to help steady his shaking hands so he can sip water from a glass. He admits, “I didn’t think I was an alcoholic, but obviously I was.”

Flair’s problem with alcohol started while he worked to build a camaraderie with his fellow wrestlers during the early days of his career in 1972. It helped them “bond,” he says, noting though, “I never drank when I was working.”

“But as soon as work was over, I went right to the mill,” he says, adding that he’s long struggled to “do anything in moderation,” and admitting to a failed rehab stint four years prior.

Alcohol also served as a tonic of sorts when it came to coping with his injuries and intense physical pain from his job. “I’ve never taken a pain pill in my life,” he explains. “I’d just take a shower, flip my hair back and go to the best bar in town.”

Now, the father of four says he is dedicated to doing better.

“I’ll never drink again,” says Flair. “I never want to go through this again.”

Ric Flair Talks About His Brush With Death, Charlotte Told He Wasn’t Going To Make It

People TV has released a new sit-down interview with 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who spoke at length about his recent brush with death. This was the project Flair recently mentioned, being ‘back behind the camera like he never left’ and wearing ‘a couple pounds of gold’ and diamonds around his neck.

The feature looks at Flair’s storied career and the hard-hitting lifestyle outside the ring that’s taken a toll on him throughout the years. After initially being hospitalized with a bad stomach ache, Flair’s organs were failing. He was put into a week-long medically induced coma and underwent life saving surgery.

While things worked out for the Nature Boy, doctors weren’t sure that he would pull through. In fact, Flair’s daughter Charlotte was warned that Ric probably would not survive.

Flair is still unable to walk on his own, but uses a walker while he continues physical therapy.

Bobby Roode Names One Of The Biggest Highlights Of His TNA Run

WWE Superstar Bobby Roode recently did an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated just after making his main roster debut on SmackDown Live since dropping his NXT Title to Drew McIntyre at NXT Takeover. “The Glorious One” discussed one of the highlights of his run with TNA and how joining NXT brought his passion for the business back. Check out what he had to say here:

Being able to work with two-time WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair in TNA, and Ric Flair and Jay Lethal’s segment:

“That moment with Ric was such a great moment. In that particular moment, I didn’t keep a straight face. I don’t think anyone in that ring kept a straight face. If you thought we did, it was just good editing by the camera crew.”

NXT bringing back his passion for the business:

“NXT brought my passion back. I got the chance to work with all the coaches down at the Performance Center, and I was able to pick Triple H’s brain, too. Also, working with Shawn Michaels was amazing. He’s been very supportive of me, and extremely helpful.”

On Wednesday, Flair formally parted ways with Melinda Morris Zanoni and Legacy Talent and Entertainment, which had represented Flair for many years. Legacy Talent had been handling Flair’s PR and public appearances.

Zanoni had been providing health updates on Flair during his recent medical emergency. She initially announced (8/12) that Flair was in the hospital for “routine monitoring” and said there was “no reason to panic,” but the situation was much more serious than the first tweet implied.

Ric Flair Is ‘Awake, Communicating And Progressing’ According To His Manager

Ric Flair’s manager Melinda Morris Zanoni of Legacy Talent and Entertainment provided the following update on Ric Flair’s condition:

“Out of respect for family privacy there has not been an official Ric Flair update, but that has led to a lot of false information. Don’t believe everything you read. Happy to report Ric Flair is awake, communicating and progressing…but there have been complications so he needs rest for the first time in 40 years. He did cut a promo on a nurse yesterday so anyone that knows Ric knows that’s a very good sign. On behalf of Ric THANK YOU for all the outpouring of prayers and well wishes (although the offers for a kidney seemed a little excessive) :). The man outlived both a plane crash and being struck by lightening…he is a survivor. Beyond grateful for all the love and respect sent Ric’s way.”

Barlow wrote on Wednesday:

“Just want to give an update to my friends and Family as I have been unable to talk on the phone without crying and just feel shocked over events….. I took Ric to the Hospital Friday night with Severe Abdominal pain. From that moment on it all seems like a nightmare…multiple Organ problems. Not to go into too many details I want everyone to know he still needs Prayers as he is still in Critical Condition. And No he did not have Colon Surgery….It was another Surgery! I don’t know how the media comes up with their stories. I have been by his side since Friday and will continue to make sure he is getting the best care possible. Thanks for all of the support and Love.”

Jim Ross On Ric Flair’s Hospitalization, WWE SummerSlam, More

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has posted a new blog entry over at his official website where he gives his thoughts on various topics. Here are the highlights:

Ric Flair being hospitalized:

“The word that my long time friend and the greatest pro wrestler to ever live, Ric Flair, is in the hospital in intensive care has many of us concerned. As I write this, no official info has been released on the nature of Ric’s condition but heart issues are reportedly in the mix. Our thoughts are with Natich and his entire family on a speedy and full recovery.  Ric and I were sitting next to each other on a USAirways flight in the late 80’s when we both met my late, wife Jan. Ric likes to tell the story of how he “introduced Jan and me” of which I encourage because it makes him smile.”

This Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam PPV:

“Regarding Summer Slam, of which I have high expectations, I am anxious to see how Jinder Mahal and Shinsuke Nakamura mesh bell to bell as this one could be a sleeper. Both men have much to prove, IMO, on this stage and in this specific match.  Also, I am not of the mindset that it is automatic that Brock Lesnar will lose the Universal Title Sunday. I could see, however, this huge main event setting up Lesnar vs Strowman down the road on another big stage. I will be dropping by the Barclay Center Saturday night to watch the NXT Takeover which has quite the lineup itself. The Takeover events seemingly never disappoint. Great weekend of TV on the @WWENetwork.”

Ross also talked about NJPW and more. You can read the entire blog here.
