Backstage News On Why Jim Ross Is Leaving WWE

As announced earlier, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is retiring after 20 years with the company.

Aside from Jim Ross wanting to focus on “other business ventures” (most notably his JR’s Barbecue company), the Wrestling Observer reports that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon had a role in his departure.

According to Observer report, Ross and McMahon met earlier todayto discuss Ross’s future with the company, which led to the decision for Ross to retire.

It’s being said that Ric Flair’s unruly behavior at the WWE 2K14 panel during SummerSlam weekend was a contributing factor in his departure. This Day In History: Ric Flair’s WWF Debut Match, Kurt Angle Found Not Guilty, ECW

It is an interesting “day in history” for pro wrestling today, September 9th. WWE Hall Of Famer “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair had his official WWE (WWF at the time) debut match on this day in 1991. Flair defeated Jim Powers at a television taping in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Also on this day, in 2000, former WWE Superstar Rhino defeated Kid Kash for the ECW Television Title. That is interesting to note because Rhino would end up being the final ECW TV Champion in history, as he would hold onto the belt until the company folded in April of 2001.

On this day in 2008, current TNA Impact Wrestling star Kurt Angle was found not guilty of driving under the influence and careless driving in a Allegheny County, Pennsylvania courtroom. Angle was arrested for one of his earlier DUI’s after a witness filed a complaint. Angle’s lawyer would later challenge the use of the witness, since police could not corroborate her claims.

Charlotte Talks About Her Goals In NXT, Ric Flair Being There for Her Debut Match

WWE.com has published part two of their interview with NXT Diva Charlotte, daughter of Ric Flair. Here are some highlights:

WWE.COM: Did your father ever suggest the possibility of you following in his footsteps?

CHARLOTTE: It was something he always said I would be phenomenal at, but not something he pushed. Dad always pushed me to pursue college sports and a degree. He said wrestling would always be there. When I finally told my dad I wanted to give it a go, he said, “OK, kid, let’s get you in ring shape.” I’ll never forget the first day I hit the ropes with my dad and little brother. He’s always believed in me, no matter what I wanted to do.

WWE.COM: Describe the experience of being able to pave your own legacy.

CHARLOTTE: I am not the same person I was a year ago because I have learned so much in WWE’s developmental system. Words cannot explain what we do. It is the toughest obstacle that I have ever tackled. Not only do you have to be an athlete, but you have to be an entertainer as well. I’ve always been a natural performer, but being an entertainer was foreign to me. I try to incorporate some of my dad’s signature moves in with mine just because it is sentimental to me. Yes, I am my own person, but I will never want to go through my career without a part of him with me.

WWE.COM: Speaking of which, your father was on hand for your debut match at NXT. What did that mean to you?

CHARLOTTE: Surreal is the only word I can think of. … My dad will be proud of me no matter how grand the stage is. Having him there was so special, but some of the most joyful moments that night were getting to introduce him to all the talent, coaches and staff that I work with. I was proud to show Dad that I was doing well in a business where he is idolized as one of the greatest of all time. The entire night was unforgettable to me. Obviously doing the “Flair Strut” at the end was pretty amazing, too!

WWE.COM: As we stand here today, what is your current goal?

CHARLOTTE: To be the next NXT Women’s Champion.

Part One Of “Steve Austin Show” With Ric Flair, IWGP Jr. Tag-Titles To Be Defended In ROH

-Part one of the episode of the “Steve Austin Show” everyone has been waiting for is finally available, for free, online. The first installment of a three-hour interview between WWE Hall Of Famers “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair can be heard at PodcastOne.com.

-ROH recently announced that the IWGP Jr. Tag-Team Titles from New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) will be defended at their “Death Before Dishonor” event on September 20th in Philadelphia.

ROH issued the following:

HISTORY IN THE MAKING…
The IWGP Jr. Tag Titles To Be Defended In Philly!

It has been over a year since the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles were defended in the United States, coincidentally by The Forever Hooligans during their very first reign as champions. In fact, in the 15 year history of the championships, a Stateside defense is something that has only happened on four occasions. That will change on September 20th when Ring of Honor comes to Philadelphia for “Death Before Dishonor XI”!

On that night, in a bout officially sanctioned by New Japan Pro Wrestling, the current IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions The Forever Hooligans (Alex Koslov & Rocky Romero) will make their third title defense against The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards)!

“It is an honor to have this IWGP championship match taking place during our Philadelphia event.” said ROH Match Maker Nigel McGuinness, “It will already be an historic night as we crown a brand new World Champion and now, with the addition of this New Japan sanctioned bout, September 20, 2013 will be a night that wrestling fans around the world will remember forever. These are two of the finest tag teams in the world today and if their previous encounters are any indication, this contest could be a show-stealer!”

The history of these two units is well known. From Rocky & Davey’s championships days together in ROH as part of The No Remorse Corps to their days teaming in New Japan where they also claimed the IWGP Jr. Tag Titles to the athletic rivalry that has sprung up in 2013 between The Wolves and The Hooligans, these four men have proven time and again that tag team wrestling is alive and well in both ROH and NJPW.

Now, in a rivalry that has been dominated by The Wolves and has already seen the ROH World Tag Team Titles change hands back at “All Star Extravaganza V”, Davey, Eddie, Rocky, and Alex will collide one more time on 9/20 and the prestigious IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles will be on the line! Plus, win or lose, The Hooligans will also be in action on 9/21 as part of the “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV Tapings!

“Death Before Dishonor XI” weekend will go down in history as one of the most important in ROH history and with addition of this IWGP Jr. Tag Title match, it just became even more important! Do not miss out as history is made in Philadelphia! Tickets on-sale now!!!

WWE NXT Diva Charlotte Talks About Growing Up As Ric Flair’s Daughter

The following are highlights from a new WWE.com interview with NXT Diva Charlotte, who is the daughter of WWE Hall Of Famer “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

WWE.COM: What was it like growing up with one of the greatest performers of all time as your father?

CHARLOTTE: Honestly, I grew up very privileged, and I am so thankful for the opportunities my dad’s career was able to provide. I have had the opportunity to travel the world, and I’ve met so many incredible people from all walks of life. I truly believe growing up in Charlotte, N.C., which was once a very small city, is what kept me grounded. I am still friends with the kids I went to kindergarten with.

Yes, our family is extremely well known in North Carolina; at the same time when you have lived in the same place your entire life, everyone gets to know you. When Dad and I would walk into a restaurant, it wouldn’t be the same reaction as we would get somewhere else, because the community as a whole knew us.

WWE.COM: How much of a difference existed between the Ric Flair that the world knew compared to the Ric Flair you grew up with?

CHARLOTTE: None. The sport of professional wrestling was and is my dad’s life. I truly believe he is loved and hated by so many because he is one of a few in history that can take an audience through an array of emotions. My dad has never been afraid to show emotion in public or at home. At sporting events he would be the first to tear up when I hit the stage. I think he was also the first inductee to cry on stage during the 2008 Hall of Fame Ceremony, when Triple H inducted him. My dad did everything he could to put food on the table.

WWE.COM: How true are all the stories of Ric Flair’s generosity?

CHARLOTTE: About three years ago I remember riding with my dad the day before Christmas Eve, and he was giving out gifts to people he knew at our local grocery store, favorite restaurants and even our local hair dresser. If I asked him to bring me a Gatorade to volleyball practice, he would bring four. On the other hand, when Dad was on TV talking about owning $800 alligator boots, he wasn’t kidding.

Some people criticize because they think my dad still wants to be active because he still wants the limousines and jets. The truth is, he does still want to be active and in the public because his life has been dedicated to our industry. Dad loves his fans and constantly wants to give back.

Ric Flair Possibly Re-Signing With WWE, Details On What His Role Would Be

According to sources, there are currently negotiations going on between WWE and Ric Flair about the possibility of the double-WWE Hall Of Fame inductee signing a new deal with the company.

Apparently, if he re-signs, WWE is interested in using Flair in a role where he can be used by the company for promotional purposes, as well as having him around to move new Flair-related merchandise.

The only negative, as far as Flair’s side of the deal is concerned, is that WWE wouldn’t want him associating himself with projects such as the North Carolina lottery, which is a simple gig that has earned “The Nature Boy” a nice chunk of change.

BALTIMORE, JULY 29, 2013 — – Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: SBGI) (the “Company” or “Sinclair”) announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the stock of Perpetual Corporation and the equity interest of Charleston Television, LLC, both owned and controlled by the Allbritton family (“Allbritton”), for an aggregate purchase price of $985.0 million. The Allbritton stations consist of seven ABC Network affiliates, covering 4.9% of the U.S. TV households, and NewsChannel 8, a 24-hour cable/satellite news network covering the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Completion of the transaction is subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including approval by the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) and antitrust clearance, as applicable. The Company anticipates that the transaction will close and fund in the fourth quarter of 2013, subject to the satisfaction of the closing conditions. The Company expects to fund the purchase price at closing through a bank loan and/or by accessing the capital markets.

To comply with FCC local television ownership rules, Sinclair expects to sell the license and certain related assets of its existing stations in Birmingham, AL – WABM (MNT) and WTTO (CW), Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York, PA – WHP (CBS), and Charleston, SC – WMMP (MNT) and to provide sales and other non-programming support services to each of these stations pursuant to customary shared services and joint sales agreements.

The Allbritton stations to be owned and operated are:

Station Affil. Market DMA(1)
WJLA ABC Washington, DC 8
WBMA ABC Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Anniston, AL (2) 42
WCFT ABC Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Anniston, AL(2) 42
WJSU ABC Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Anniston, AL(2) 42
WHTM ABC Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York, PA 43
KATV ABC Little Rock/Pine Bluff, AR 56
KTUL ABC Tulsa, OK 59
WSET ABC Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA 68
WCIV ABC Charleston, SC 98

(1) Represents television designated market areas according to the Nielsen Company. The numbers in the column represent the ranking in terms of size of the DMA out of the 210 generally recognized DMAs in the United States.

(2) WJSU and WCFT, along with associated low-power station WBMA, simulcast all local and network programming to the combined market.

In addition, the Company will acquire Allbritton’s NewsChannel 8, the region’s only 24-hour local cable/satellite news network dedicated to covering news, weather, sports and local information to over 2 million households in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

“We are thrilled to add the Allbritton properties to our growing portfolio and national footprint,” commented David Smith, President and CEO of Sinclair. “To buy a full-blown news operation in our nation’s capital and an infrastructure that allows us to be connected to our branches of government and be at the pulse of national issues is a once-in-a lifetime event. We are especially excited to acquire the NewsChannel 8 local news channel, not only for the content it can provide our existing news stations, but moreover because their regional cable presence provides the perfect platform should we decide to expand it into other markets, especially given the amount of local news we produce across our entire portfolio.”

Including the Allbritton station acquisitions, all previously announced acquisitions, and pro forma for expected synergies, the Company’s 2011 and 2012 net broadcast revenues would have been $1.609 billion and $1.865 billion, respectively. The $985.0 million purchase price represents an 8.7x multiple of the average 2011-2012 cash flow including $21.5 million of operating synergies, which excludes any synergies associated with rolling out a national news cable channel. At an 8.5x enterprise to cash flow multiple, the additional synergies create approximately $1.83 of added equity value.

Ric Flair Comments On Judge Issuing A Warrant For His Arrest

WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair has issued his first public comments since a judge issued a warrant for his arrest due to his failure to pay spousal support to his estranged wife,  Jackqueline Beems.

Flair told the Charlotte Observer:

“The reason I didn’t pay my ex-wife the 32 grand is because my son died and I was in the hospital for a month,” Flair said. “I was in the hospital for a month with a blood clot. I didn’t go to work for three months.”

Flair’s ex-wife, Jackqueline Beems, turned herself into police earlier this week and was charged with harrassing Flair’s new girlfriend, which is a misdemeanor. [Mugshot] Beems’ lawyer  calls the allegations “unfounded and outlandish,” but Ric Flair says:

“My girlfriend Wendy Kidder is the mother of four and she has 50 texts and five phone (voice-)mails from my ex-wife,” he said. “They didn’t give Wendy a warrant for arrest without looking at all of that stuff.”

Ric Flair Issued Arrest Warrant For Failure To Pay Spousal Support To Ex-Wife

The following is off the AP Newswire:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – A judge has issued an arrest order for former professional wrestling champion Ric Flair for not paying his estranged wife more than $32,000 in spousal support.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Flair, whose real name is Richard Morgan Fliehr, was ordered to pay $4,000 a month to Jacqueline Beems, who filed for a legal separation last summer. Court documents say Flair didn’t pay $32,352.51 following two court orders.

Documents say the arrest order was issued on July 3, but Flair can avoid jail if he pays what he owes.

Beems was charged Tuesday with making a harassing phone call. She’s accused of making a series of calls to Flair’s girlfriend.

Beems was released on a $500 unsecured bond, and her attorney calls the charges “unfounded and outlandish.”
