WWE Shares ‘Banned’ CM Punk Tryout Match Against The Road Warriors

Wrestling fans can see generations collide in a new video from WWE’s vault which sees CM Punk in a tag team match against the Road Warriors. In the latest video from the WWE Vault YouTube channel, Punk speaks of the match that saw himself and Doug Delicious face the legendary tag-team. This match was quite a surprise for Punk at the time, as after using a grapevine hammerlock DDT in a separate dark match, he was deemed unsafe in the ring and effectively ‘banned’ from being used again.

Despite this ban, Punk was brought in alongside Delicious to face the Road Warriors as the originally planned opponents for Hawk and Animal were severely lacking in the skills department. It was Sgt. Slaughter who proposed the match to the ‘banned’ Punk. You can check out Punk’s comments and the match in the video below.

This match would be Punk’s second in a WWE ring and holds the unfortunate distinction of being the final WWE match of Road Warrior Hawk. After competing in the Velocity dark match, Hawk died of a heart attack in October that year at the age of 46. He, alongside Animal and Paul Ellering, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.

CM Punk may be one of the biggest names in professional wrestling, but as this match shows, even the top stars have to start somewhere. Punk will return to action this weekend at WWE SummerSlam where he will take on Drew McIntyre.

Road Warrior Animal Addresses The Ascension’s Controversial Promo From Monday’s RAW

After the controversy from The Ascension’s promo on Monday’s edition of WWE RAW, where the former NXT standout team took shots at past WWE tag-teams such as Demolition and more specifically, The Road Warriors, Joe Laurinaitis, who portrayed “Animal” in the Road Warriors tag-team, has posted a blog to address the situation.

Road Warrior Animal (Joe Laurinaitis) wrote the following on his official Facebook page:

“The idiots in charge make the call everyone knows how stupid it is to copy icons yet they still do it. Do it in a mocking fashion to get heat I understand do it in a disrespectful way well that’s another issue that’s low and has no place in the business.

Where does it end and I usually are just are playing when I comment but this one is a shoot I believe they should have had Me Animal find a team. For some undetected odd reason they don’t do it. They missed the boat with Ascention and they missed it when my brother John was in the ring both great times to bring me in and they missed it.

They need to go to their merchandise numbers today and see we rank up with the main roster on selling merchandise for a reason.

Oh what a rush.”

Curtis Axel Talks Being A Third-Generation Wrestler, His Father, Minnesota & More

The following are highlights of a new City Pages interview with Curtis Axel:

On the state of Minnesota producing many quality pro wrestlers: “If you look at the guys who have come out of our state — my dad, Rick Rude, the Road Warriors, and the whole AWA, really — we produce tough guys. We’ve got a good stock in Minnesota.”

On being a third-generation wrestler: “It’s always tough to live up to having a famous father and grandfather, but I’m not trying to be the next Mr. Perfect or Larry the Ax; I’m trying to be the first Joe Hennig. With a lot of third generation guys, their fathers are still around to give them advice. Unfortunately, my dad isn’t around anymore. I wish he was, and I still get good advice from my grandfather, but I think the fact that my dad isn’t around drives me even more to get out there and do it for myself.”
