Pro Wrestling x NFL Weekly Round Up: (Week 6)

For the rest of the NFL season, I’ll be doing a pro football round-up and how the pro wrestling world collides with the stars and teams of the National Football League.

Week 6 of the NFL had one WWE Hall of Famer stopping by the forthcoming WrestleMania 41 grounds in Las Vegas and an AEW star becoming the “Twelfth Man” for his homestate Seattle Seahawks. Plus there’s some “mojo” going down with Rob Gronkowski and the actor playing him. Let’s kick it off.

Rey Mysterio Rocks Raiders Silver & Black

While last week’s write-up showcased the Steelers heavily, this week we have Rey Mysterio to thank for the spotlight being shown on their opponent in the Las Vegas Raiders. WWE is revving up to crash the Las Vegas strip next year at WrestleMania 41, but before they do they teased the fans a little with a special appearance by Mysterio, Titus O’Neil and Samatha Irvin (who actually sang the national anthem before the game).

Mysterio took photos before kickoff with some of the players and later with the fans, but it wasn’t enough for them to thwart Pittsburgh, who made Aidan O’Connell and the Raider offense walk the plank 32-13.

Darby Allin Soars With The Seattle Seahawks

Pro wrestling became a factor in the very first game of week six when the Seattle Seahawks battled NFC East rival San Francisco in a Thursday night game. Considering AEW was in the area for their upcoming WrestleDream PPV on Saturday, AEW pillar Darby Allin popped by complete with his signature pink jacket. However, it was the 49ers who put the Coffin Drop on Seattle by winning 36-24.

Mojo Rawley ‘Gets Hyped’ For Gronk Actor In ‘Aaron Hernandez: American Sports Story’

Mojo Rawley (Dean Muhtadi) may not be grappling it up in the ring at the moment, but the former WWE star keeps busy being a notable TMZ personality. Rawley had some fun news to talk about this week as family and friendship collided this week in a viral moment involving FX’s dark story behind deceased NFL tight end, Aaron Hernandez. The show has created a lot of buzz with the portrayals of notable NFL names like Bill Belicheck and Robert Kraft, but a shining star is the one actor playing Rob Gronkowski.

Gronk notoriously has a history with WWE and is a former teammate of the aformentioned Rawley at the University of Maryland. However, both have ties to the actor playing Gronk, Laith Wallschleger. Laith is a former D1 from the University of Delaware (alma mater of Joe Flacco – Blue Hens!) before spending some time in the NFL until making the trip to Hollywood. He now finds steady work as a stuntman, voice actor and now got eyes as Gronkowski. During an interview with Kay Adams, Gronkowski actually revealed that Wallschleger is his acting double for everything he does and the two are good friends. Rawley noted that Laith is actually his cousin!

The good vibes from Laith didn’t translate for the actual Patriots on the field this week as they got stampeded by the Houston Texans 41-21.

Trevor Lee Celebrates A Ravens Win

Trevor Lee is currently a free agent in the world of pro wrestling, but he was flying to the moon during the Baltimore Ravens game against in-state adversary the Washington Commanders. For many, the game may have been tighter than expected, but the Ravens rode the legs Derrick Henry who trounced the Commanders in an effort to win by just a touchdown. Lee had a video of himself celebrating at the game following the team’s fourth straight win.

Wrestling Related Games Win-Loss Record

Not a good week for the teams with pro wrestling ties as three of the four teams took an L, with Trevor Lee’s Ravens getting the only W.

After four weeks, wrestling related NFL stories stand even at 9-9.

Rob Gronkowski Wants to Wrestle Alongside The Rock

It’s been a while since multi-time Super Bowl Champion Rob Gronkowski has been around the wrestling business. However, the NFL legend and big-time wrestling fan has made it known that he wants to wrestle a match — and this time he wants one of the greatest to ever do it involved.

Speaking with TMZ Sports, Gronk talked about wanting a future match that involves The Rock.

“It would definitely be a tag team match, no doubt about that,” Gronkowski said (h/t Fightful). “I just love the tag team aspect of everything, you know? It’s my first time so I really wouldn’t want to be on my own doing a one-on-one match, I’d be able to get help, and then grow into that role of maybe going doing a one-on-one match after a couple of tag team matches, my tag team partner can help me out with some moves, and all that good stuff. But who would it be [against]?

“I’m getting put on the spot. It would be pretty cool to have The Rock come back and face The Rock or have him as my tag team partner. It’d be cool to get a People’s Elbow, but it would also be cool to have him on my squad.”

Gronk was front row at WrestleMania 33 in 2017. At that show, he helped his friend Mojo Rawley win the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

Gronk later hosted WrestleMania 36 just weeks into the COVID-19 pandemic. He wound up walking away from that show with the WWE 24/7 Championship and held it for about two months until he revealed he was returning to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucs alongside Tom Brady.

Later in the interview with TMZ, Gronk elaborated more on his ideas for WWE. It consisted nearly entirely of names from the past rather than current superstars.

“You and I maybe we can go back, make a quick appearance, be the Tag Team Champions, and we can go vs. The Rock, and then you know, maybe like, D-Generation X, we can bring them back we can tag team against them, that’d be pretty cool. Maybe Val Venis can come back, we can tag team, he was one of my favorites. I love the old school guys. I wouldn’t want to go for someone like The Big Show or The Undertaker. They’re just too massive dudes. I don’t like when I go [against] a guy who is bigger than me. I like to be the biggest guy,” Gronk said.

WWE Issues Statement On Rob Gronkowski’s NFL Return

It was reported yesterday that Rob Gronkowski will be returning to NFL and play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The league later also confirmed the news of his comeback.

WWE has now responded to this development and the company released a statement on their official website. They congratulated the American football star but also warned him about the rules of the 24/7 title:

“Congratulations to Rob Gronkowski, the current WWE 24/7 Champion, on his return to football. Per the rules of the 24/7 Title, Gronk must defend his championship at all times in any location. He could be celebrating a touchdown pass from Tom Brady…anytime, anywhere.”

Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from NFL in March 2019. He made a cameo during WrestleMania 33 and the former Football player then signed a WWE contract for 2 matches in March 2020.

He hosted WrestleMania 36 and the former Patriots player won the 24/7 championship by defeating Mojo Rawley during the second day of the PPV event.

There is no word yet on how this return will affect Gronkowski’s WWE commitments and when or if he will return to the company to complete his contractual obligations. We will keep you posted if any details on the matter come out.

Rob Gronkowski To Make NFL Return, WWE Run In Question

Rob Gronkowski is looking to put his stint in the WWE on hold in order to make a return to the NFL.

On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Gronk has told his old team, New England Patriots, that he wants to make a return to playing pro football. However, he doesn’t want to play for the team.

Instead, he wants to join former Patriots quarterback and good friend Tom Brady in Tampa Bay as part of the Buccaneers.

A trade between the two teams would have to be worked out for this to happen, which is underway, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It was also noted that Gronk has been putting on weight for a return to football. Brady has also reportedly shown interest in having his friend join the team in the tight end position.

Schefter has just reported that Gronk will be making an NFL return pending a physical. It’s a done deal.

This comes just after a month that news broke of Gronk signing a deal with WWE. He made an appearance back on the March 20th episode of Friday Night SmackDown and served as the host of WrestleMania 36.

This is where he pinned Mojo Rawley, who is friends with the former NFL star, to win the WWE 24/7 Title.

At the time of his signing, it was reported that he’s expected to wrestle at least a few matches under his WWE contract.

Rob Gronkowski Talks About Signing With WWE

Rob Gronkowski Talks About Signing With WWE

New WWE signing Rob Gronkowski has opened up about signing with the company in a recent interview with Newshub. Looking back to his time in the NFL, Gronkowski shared how those experiences helped prepare him for WWE.

“Playing football in the NFL and being around the best of the best has definitely prepared me for WrestleMania. You can’t just walk out on the field and expect to be ready to compete – you have to practice, work out and know your plays.”

Gronkowski continued, “It’s the same thing for WrestleMania. I can’t expect to go out there, and jump off the top rope or cut a promo. Everything is about practice and that’s what I’ve taken from my time in the NFL. If you want to be great in any industry, you have to do the work and prepare. In the time I have been with WWE, I can see the superstars are the same way and they want it just as bad.”

The former NFL player shared how it’s an honor to be a part of WWE and experience the atmosphere he grew up watching. He added how working with his friend Mojo Rawley is a dream come true for him. Rob Gronkowski made his WWE television debut as a talent on the March 20 episode of SmackDown.

Rob Gronkowski will serve as Host for this weekend’s WrestleMania 36. The pre-recorded event will air on the WWE Network on April 4 and April 5.

Mojo Rawley Moved To SmackDown Roster

Mojo Rawley has been officially moved to the SmackDown roster.

Rawley was previously signed to the Raw brand, and he recently appeared on SmackDown with his friend Rob Gronkowski, who is going to be the host of WrestleMania 36 on April 4.

Mojo Rawley was moved to the SmackDown section of the roster on WWE’s website. He was drafted by Raw back in October 2019 on the second night of the supplemental draft.

He then appeared on two episodes of SmackDown and even served as a special guest commentator. He also was in a segment where he abused Michael Cole, this was the same night when it was confirmed that Gronkowski is headed to WWE. On the March 20 episode of SmackDown, Rawley welcomed Gronkowski to the WWE.

Gronkowski and Mojo teamed up with Elias and took out King Baron Corbin on the episode. Gronkowski then went on to announce a match between Elias and Corbin for WrestleMania 36.

Mojo might be involved with Gronk’s storylines from here on out. It was reported that Gronk signed a deal with WWE where we could see him compete in matches in the future. We could see Mojo be involved in these matches.

Mojo has said that he would like to have a match with Gronkowski at SummerSlam in August. It would be interesting to see if it actually comes to fruition.

Mark Henry – Rob Gronkowski has “Ronda Rousey or Kurt Angle” Potential

WWE Hall of Famer and co-host of Busted Open Radio Mark Henry recently discussed the Three-Time NFL Superbowl Champion Rob Gronkowski and his switch to the squared circle. Henry would have huge praise for the former NFL tight end and he believes that Gronk has a massive amount of potential in WWE.

“Rob Gronkowski has a lot of personality” Mark Henry began. “He [Gronk] is a walking, living party happening 24 hours a day. I love the guy, I think that he’s gonna make a really good wrestler. Once you’ve got some seasoning and some in-ring experience.”

Mark Henry would elaborate further; saying that he believes the right time for Gronkowski to debut would be WrestleMania next year. Henry would also compare Gronk’s potential to that of two huge cross over stars from WWE’s past. “I’d say by WrestleMania next year; I don’t know if he’ll be at Ronda Rousey level for a first timer, or Kurt Angle for a first timer, but he has that potential.”

The ‘World’s Strongest Man’ would finish by saying that we do not know what sort of combat ability Gronkowski has, and that he could shock the audience. “It’s just cool to see somebody with the potential to be great. You know he’s gonna have to learn some of the fighting arts. I don’t know if Gronk can box. We don’t know if he can shoot wrestle. We don’t know if he could kickbox, there’s a lot about Gronkowski that we don’t know.”

It was announced on Friday’s SmackDown Live that Rob Gronkowski will be the host of this year’s WrestleMania. For the first time ever Mania will be held over two nights on April 5th/6th.

Lita Believes Rob Gronkowski Has The ‘Raw Tools’ To Do Well In WWE

WWE Hall of Famer Lita has shared her thoughts on one of WWE’s newest signings, Rob Gronkowski. Joining ESPN’s late-night sow Now or Never, Lita explained how she loves seeing people cross over from being a pro athlete to pro wrestling. She noted how they don’t normally account for the charisma and work ethic that goes into being an in-ring competitor.

“I love seeing that small percentage of people that cross over because being a professional athlete you’re so focused and you’re not thinking about the charisma and the stuff that goes into being a wrestler.”

Lita Lists On Gronkowski Needs To Do To Succeed

Lita then pointed to how Gronkowski and his friend Mojo already showcase plenty of charisma and personality. She believes he has the raw tools to allow him a good starting point in WWE.

“But you see Gronk and Mojo together, who also has that larger than life personality,” Lita said. “You might not know all the moves, you might not know all the ins and outs but there’s no denying that charisma and that personality, he has the personality.”

Gronkowski will reportedly be making his SmackDown debut on March 20. He will apparently have some kind of role at WrestleMania 36, potentially setting up a future storyline past “The Grandest Stage of Them All”.

Latest On Rob Gronkowski’s Status With WWE

More news regarding Rob Gronkowski reportedly signing with WWE has surfaced online.

The first news of this story broke earlier this week thanks to a report by The Wrap, who noted that the former NFL player had signed with WWE.

Per the report, he will be making his SmackDown on FOX debut during the March 20 episode from New Orleans.

It was also added that he would be making an appearance at WrestleMania 36 to begin a storyline that will lead to a match at an upcoming pay-per-view event.

In an update, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Gronk’s role at WrestleMania is still being decided and an appearance is not a lock at this point.

What is known is the fact that he’s expected to wrestle at least a few matches under his WWE contract. It’s likely that he will step into the squared circle to wrestle at the SummerSlam pay-per-view in Boston from the TD Garden.

The idea for him wrestling at the show is due to him getting a good reaction and likely help attendance as he played his entire NFL career with the New England Patriots. His opponent at this show is unknown.

Rob Gronkowski Addresses Potential WWE Career

Details On WWE’s Current Plans For Rob Gronkowski

The ongoing story of Rob Gronkowski heading to WWE continues to evolve.

The first news to break about his status with the company started on Tuesday night when Ryan Satin reported on the weekly television show, WWE Backstage, on FOX Sports 1 that the former NFL player was close to signing a deal with the company.

Fast forward to Wednesday, The Wrap reported Gronkowski has indeed signed with WWE and is slated to make an appearance on the March 20th episode of SmackDown from New Orleans. This will make his debut on SmackDown.

Per the report, WWE already has plans for him in place including seeing him make an appearance at WrestleMania 36, WWE’s biggest event of the year, next month.

It should be noted that Gronk won’t be wrestling at the show. Instead, WWE plans for him to make an appearance in order to build-up to a match after WrestleMania.

While that is known, there’s still no word yet on who his opponent will be or when his in-ring debut will take place.

Pwinsider.com released a report of their own that stated Gronkowski will be working as an active pro wrestler and his deal was described as being similar to Ronda Rousey.

The former WWE RAW Women’s Champion worked a part-time schedule that included having matches at pay-per-view events and live events aside from making appearances on Monday Night RAW.

Rob Gronkowski Reportedly Close To Finalizing Deal With WWE

Former New England Patriot player Rob Gronkowski is reportedly close to signing a deal with WWE. The news was announced by Ryan Satin during last night’s episode of FS1’s WWE Backstage.

At the time of writing, it is still unclear what kind of role WWE has in mind for Gronkowski.

“According to multiple sources, former NFL star, three-time Super Bowl champion and current Fox Sports analyst Rob Gronkowski is deep in talks with WWE and close to finalizing a deal,” Satin said.

“While the capacity in which he’d be used is unclear at this time, I’m told that Gronk could be making an appearance in WWE as early as March 20th on Friday Night SmackDown in New Orleans.”

Rob Gronkowski’s WrestleMania Moment

This wouldn’t be the first time that Gronkowski has been featured in WWE. Back in 2017 during WrestleMania 33, he jumped the barricade in order to help his friend Mojo Rawley. Thanks to his assist, Rawley was able to win the Andrew the Giant Battle Royal.

Adding to the speculation, both Triple H and Stephanie McMahon recently attended Gronkowski’s Super Bowl beach party. Triple H has also publicly invited Gronkowski to this year’s SummerSlam event in Boston, Massachusetts.

Rob Gronkowski has previously shared his dreams of getting involved with pro wrestling. He noted how it probably wouldn’t be a full-time career, but he would love to have “one crazy match.”

With other notable celebrities and sports stars having recently had notable matches in WWE, including Cain Velasquez and Tyson Fury, it seems that it will only be a matter of time until a marquee match might involve Rob Gronkowski.

Rawley reacted to the challenge in an interview with TMZ where he noted that he’s up for the match but also thinks a tag team match would be fitting. In fact, he thinks the match should take place at SummerSlam.

“We’ve been talking about doing a tag match together for a really long time,” Mojo says. SummerSlam is in Boston next year. That might be the one man!!!”

Gronk talked about he would like to practice and do a Royal Rumble match. He brought up how he’s good friends with Mojo Rawley and that he would like to do that.

Stephanie McMahon Says She’d Love To Sign Rob Gronkowski & Conor McGregor

He won’t give a timetable for this possible match as it could be in five years or longer as he has the rest of his life to do it.

Gronk brought up how he has always dreamed about doing that one time. “So, that may be a possibility, like one time down the road.”

This won’t be the last time that Gronk talks about this possible venture due to his size, athletic background, and charisma.

It doesn’t hurt that WWE has expressed interest in signing him whether that be to a full-time contract or for just a one-off match.

When asked if any conversations had taken place between WWE & Rob Gronkowski or Conor McGregor, Stephanie was coy in her response.

“We are always having conversations,” was all she would offer up during the interview.

Stephanie McMahon On Future WrestleMania Main Events

“I certainly believe our women can be headlining any PPV,” Stephanie said. “I think you are going to see a healthy mix because it’s not about women having this opportunity because of a movement, it’s about these 3 women, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey being the biggest stars in WWE right now with the best storyline and the best characters.”

“They are the main event because they’ve earned it and that’s what our audience is most interested in seeing. Certainly, they are not going to headline every WrestleMania but I think there’s always going to be a healthy mix and it’s not defined by gender, it’s really defined by who is the best.”

Rob Gronkowski Appears At Charity Event With WWE Superstars

3-time NFL Super Bowl champion Ron Gronkowski appeared with WWE Superstars at a black-tie charity event for the held in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night.

WWE Superstars Braun Strowman, Mojo Rawley and Mickie James were also on hand for the USO-Metro’s 37th Annual Awards. As seen below, comedian Jon Stewart (no stranger to WWE) was also in attendance.

Grankowski was awarded with the USO-Metro’s Merit Award, which recognizes individuals of outstanding talent who are dedicated to serving others through volunteerism. Gronk’s acceptance speech is getting a fair amount of media coverage.

In front of a room full of Army generals, Medal of Honor recipients, donors and military personnel, he spoke about visiting Walter Reed National Military Medical Center earlier in the day.

“I mean, I thought I went through a lot in my life,” Gronkowski said. “Today, I saw a troop who lost both of his legs tell me he wants to get the movement back in his legs and get prosthetics in, and get back out there and kill some motherf*ckers!”

Gronk: Future WWE Superstar?

Earlier this week, Gronkowski announced his retirement from pro football after 9 seasons with the New England Patriots. The 29-year old stud athlete is close friends with WWE Superstar Mojo Rawley. He has has expressed interest in a WWE career once he retired from the NFL.

Earlier this week, Mojo Rawley told TMZ Sports that he expects to see Gronk in a WWE ring “at some point” in the future. Whether or not he decides to become a full-time WWE performer, it seems inevitable that he’s destined for at least a few appearances.

Stephanie McMahon sent Gronk a message this week telling him the doors are always open for him to join WWE.

Mojo Rawley Confident We’ll See Rob Gronkowski In A WWE Ring

On Sunday, former tight end of New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement from NFL.

WWE’s Mojo Rawley who is good friends with Gronkowsk said that we can expect to see the Gronk in a WWE ring at some point.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Rawley said, “That wouldn’t shock me one bit. I mean, he’s always been a wrestling fan,” Rawley said. “… In the future, I’m sure at some point you’ll see him inside a WWE ring in one capacity or another, but I don’t know if that’s day gonna be today.”

On whether the company themselves would be interested in the former NFL star, Rawley responded positively and said that a personality like Gronkowski is exactly what the company looks for:

“I’m absolutely positive they would be pretty receptive to that,” he said. “A guy that can move the way he can, that has his size and overall demeanor and charisma, yeah, that’s kinda what we recruit around. That’s exactly what we’re looking for here.”

Rawley continued, “So you know, I’m sure they’d be on board with it, and like you said, there’s been a lot of Superstars from other walks of life that have come here and been successful. That’s kinda the beauty of WWE – everyone’s got their own story, they all have their own path of getting here. It’s just a very diverse and unique locker room. So yeah, he’d be a perfect fit. Absolutely.”

Gronkowski appeared at WrestleMania 33 to help his friend Rawley win the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. Gronkowski was sitting ringside and Jinder Mahal threw a drink at him which prompted the star to get in the ring and attack Mahal.

Rob Gronkowski Not Expected To Join WWE

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has long been linked to rumors of a WWE career. It’s no secret that WWE likes to pick off stars from other sports to join their roster. WWE has an infatuation with scooping up mixed martial artists and former NFL players. Baron Corbin, Matt Riddle, Ronda Rousey, Roman Reigns, Mojo Rawley, and more all have links to either the NFL or MMA.

At 29-years-old, Gronkowski is already considering retirement from the NFL. He has already established himself as one of the most dominant tight ends the game has ever seen. However, injuries have plagued his career and kept him off the field for a favorable amount of time. Despite this, Gronkowski is still a two-time Super Bowl Champion, with the possibility of winning his third against the Los Angeles Rams next month.

He’s also a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro. Much like last season, it’s being reported that Gronkowski is strongly considering retirement after this season is over. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Gronkowski is considering beginning a new career. That career could be in either WWE – which Rapoport noted as unlikely – or in movies. Check out Rapoport’s report here:

Gronkowski has made an appearance for WWE before. He helped his good friend and former teammate Mojo Rawley win the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal in 2017 at WrestleMania 33. He attacked Jinder Mahal after being insulted by the former WWE Champion at ringside.

What do you think about Gronkowski likely opting to go to Hollywood over WWE?

He’s also a huge wrestling fan and helped his friend, Mojo Rawley, win the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at last year’s WrestleMania.

Nia Jax has taken to Twitter to promote positive body image. She released a photo as well as a long statement detailing her own feelings about the subject:

You may have noticed during Wrestlemania that Rob Gronkowski’s run-in was almost stopped by a security guard rushing in to stop him. It turns out that the same security guard worked the recent NXT Tapings and can be seen below escorting ‘The Drifter’ out of the arena.

The question is…how could she not have known about Gronkowski’s involvement?

NFL Star Rob Gronkowski Talks About Possibility Of Following Mojo Rawley Into WWE

NFL star of the New England Patriots, Rob Gronkowski, who recently cut a fun promo along with NXT star and former football player Mojo Rawley, recently spoke with FOX Sports about the possibility of following Rawley from the world of football to the world of sports entertainment.

“My boy Mojo Rawley is in the WWE’s NXT and he just got back from an injury, so he’s about to start amping it up again and he’s doing a great job,” said Gronkowski. “He’s my boy and he’s killing it. I love watching him. We were just chilling and we cut a promo together and we had a blast.”

Regarding the possibility of following Rawley from the world of football to WWE, Gronkowski said, “I can definitely see something in the future. Hopefully Mojo Rawley starts wrestling a lot and starts doing what he has to do and makes it to “Monday Night Raw.”

Gronkowski concluded, “If my boy is there, I’m there for an appearance.”
