Death Riders Destroy Wrestling Legends On AEW Dynamite

In the main event of the January 22nd episode of AEW Dynamite, Cope continued to build momentum against the Death Riders when he defeated PAC. On the titantron though, the faction was shown attacking the Rock N’ Roll Express. Claudio Castagnoli hit Ricky Morton with a Con-Chair-To and Robert Gibson was laid out as well.

Not finished with their violence, the Death Riders then attacked Cope. While Jay White tried to make the save, he was outnumbered by the Moxley-led gaction. The group left Cope laid out before walking away.

This isn’t the first time that the legendary Rock N’ Roll Express has run afoul of the Death Riders. During the January 4, edition of Collision, the first show of its kind in 2025, Morton and Gibson were tied up backstage. Cope and FTR freed the two wrestling legends but the Death Riders had already fled by then.

Cope returned from injury at AEW Worlds End and immediately set his sights on Moxley and his goons. While a match isn’t confirmed yet, fans can expect a World Championship showdown between the two in due time, perhaps as soon as Grand Slam: Australia next month. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Cope’s feud with the Death Riders and how he plans to retaliate after the assaults handed out on the latest episode of Dynamite.

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson started up their retirement tour back in 2022 before Gibson stepped out of the squared circle and made a hot tag to Ricky’s son Kerry to take up the mantle.

While no titles are on the line for this bout, Rock ‘n’ Roll had a renaissance before COVID-19 hit as the duo won the NWA World Tag Team Titles. Since then, Morton and Gibson would find themselves working a cup of coffee in AEW and several stints in New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

The forthcoming GCW match will cover a wide range of ages as Morton is one of the oldest active talents at 67 years old and Wayne is one of the youngest at the age of 18.

Also on the card is former RoH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes who will take on the legendary Rock ‘N’ Roll Express in what is billed as “R’N’R’s last match at the Dorton Arena ever!”

Dorton Arena is steeped in wrestling tradition, with Jim Crockett Promotions holding regular shows from 1963 until WCW last visited in December 1993. Located on the North Carolina Fairgrounds, the unique building famously was the venue where Roddy Piper defeated Ric Flair for his first of three reigns of the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship.

FTR Has Been ‘Begging’ Tony Khan For A Match With The Rock ‘N’ Roll Express

FTR member Dax Harwood has shared how he and his partner, Cash Wheeler, lobbied AEW for a matchup against the legendary Rock and Roll Express. Harwood revealed the pitch details during an interview with WrestleTalk, where he noted FTR had “begged” AEW President Tony Khan for the opportunity.

“Both of us have begged him multiple times to please book this match, please book this match. He’s apprehensive and he has his reasons to be apprehensive.”

Harwood noted how Khan is aware of a potential online backlash to FTR’s proposal. He pointed to how COVID-19 was a major contributing factor as the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express are “[…] more susceptible to the virus.”

“I understand that but man, FTR vs. Rock’ n’ Roll is great on the marquee, but also the way that myself and Cash, and I’ve talked about it all the time, but the way that we wanna make people feel, that match would help us make people feel a certain way.”

He noted how people “feel a certain way” about Ricky Morton in the same way as they do for FTR, whether it’s good or bad. He believes those feelings would help “evoke so much emotion” for a bout between the teams.

“That would help us evoke so much emotion… because if we got the chance to beat on Ricky Morton that would help our stock rise. You know, just the Spike Piledriver rose our stock so much more than a year of having great matches, and that would just help us so much if we can ever get that done.”

You can see the Spike Piledriver the FTR member is referencing in the video below:
