Ranking Every 2014 Pay-Per-View (Part 1/2)

2014 is coming to a close. Aside from two episodes of Raw that most likely be forgettable, fans have seen everything the WWE has to offer this year. Here is a look back at all 16 pay-per-views (including NXT), with each event ranked and summarized.

16. Battleground

20140703_Article_Battleground

This event took place during July, and boy was it a hot mess. The opening contest between the Usos and Wyatt Family was money, but it was downhill from there, as fans were subjected to one dud contest after another.

The biggest mistakes involved advertising a Rollins/Ambrose match that didn’t take place, and using the same predictable ending sequence during the main event. Overall, this was completely forgettable and easily the worst pay-per-view of the year.

Worst Match: Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

Best Match: The Usos vs. The Wyatt Family

15. TLC

tlc-2014

The final pay-per-view of the year was certainly not the best the company has to offer. Overall, this event suffered from a thin roster and overcomplicated booking. Like many pay-per-view events, it started off strong before derailing.

Ziggler and Harper stole the show during the opening contest. However, lame gimmicks (Stairs/Chairs Matches) and cheesy endings (Wyatt/Ambrose, Cena/Rollins) really held this event back and prevented it from being a success.

Worst Match: Ryback vs. Kane

Best Match: Dolph Ziggler vs. Luke Harper

Update On Bo Dallas’ Return, Roman Reigns Does First Solo “Make-A-Wish” (Photos)

– Bo Dallas is expected to make his return to the ring before the end of the year. It’s possible that WWE keeps him off of television until the Royal Rumble, however he is reportedly physically ready to return in the very near future. Dallas suffered a foot injury back in early November and it was announced that he would be out of action for six-to-eight weeks.

– Roman Reigns granted his first individual “Make-A-Wish” on Saturday prior to the WWE live event in Sioux Falls, Iowa. Below are photos of Reigns with the “Make-A-Wish” kids.

  • WWE Doubting Roman Reigns As Next Top Guy? Updated WM31 Plans

As noted in the past, WWE has been planning on having Roman Reigns win the Royal Rumble match in January and go on to defeat Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 31. At this point, however, there is beginning to be some skepticism regarding whether or not Reigns is ready for that big of a push.

Despite the fact that Reigns is viewed as someone who needs to work on his promo skills, and as someone who isn’t good enough to carry lengthy main-event singles matches on big shows, WWE is in need of a new top babyface star and the belief is that spot is his regardless.

While WWE has plans on continuing Randy Orton’s babyface turn, he is not a new star. Daniel Bryan is not what WWE wants in a top babyface star, no matter how fans react to him. Additionally, there’s uncertainties with Bryan due to his neck and arm injuries.

This leaves Reigns and Dean Ambrose as the two leading candidates for the top babyface spot. Ambrose is a better in-ring performer and delivers better promos, however he fits less into WWE’s mold of what they view as a top babyface star.

While Ambrose and Reigns both do strong merchandise numbers, including Ambrose’s new hoodie being number one during Thanksgiving week, neither are doing the type of numbers that a top guy traditionally does on a consistent basis.

Despite all of this, the belief is that WWE will stick with their plans for Reigns heading into WrestleMania, as he is still considered the top choice by the top people behind-the-scenes.

  • Jim Ross Blog: Roman Reigns As A Main Eventer, Dixie Carter On His Podcast, Josh Mathews/TNA

The following are highlights of the latest blog by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:

On Roman Reigns as a main eventer for WWE: “Was asked today by Jason Powell for Pro Wrestling.net audio if I thought Roman Reigns was ready to be the man in WWE and become WWE World Champion. I don’t think Reigns is ready today but it’s not game day just yet but I do applaud WWE for attempting to add more ‘new’ into the upper card mix and taking a calculated risk on Reigns to be one of their centerpieces. Time will tell and I assure one and all that no one knows today. I’m optimistic.”

On Dixie Carter appearing on The Ross Report: “I’m going to have TNA/Impact Wrestling head honcho Dixie Carter on my podcast that will drop on Tuesday January 6 at 9:30 pm ET on podcastone.com. Indeed, Dixie Carter will be my first podcast guest of 2015 and I can’t wait. Dixie will have a great deal to discuss as her Impact Wrestling brand is moving networks in a few weeks and making some internal changes that the fans will see on their first broadcast on Destination America.”

On Josh Mathews joining the TNA broadcast team: “Congrats to Josh Mathews on replacing Mike Tenay on the broadcast team and who will join forces with Taz on the Impact TV show. Josh will bring a different approach and feel to the show but has big shoes to fill as it relates to Mike Tenay stepping away to fulfill another role or two in the company. Mike will also maintain his TV presence. Josh and Taz should be fun to listen to as they develop their chemistry. I wish both friends well.”

  • Top Ten NXT Superstars That Could Succeed On Main WWE Roster

    kevin-owens-finn-balor-adrian-neville-sami-zayn-hideo-itami-nxt-ses-1

Sometimes things work out. Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins.

Other times, things don’t. Adam Rose, Bo Dallas, Fandango.

After last week’s NXT Takeover: R Evolution special, which fans are still raving about a week later, it became crystal clear to me that WWE is developing a number of future Superstars that have the potential to lead the company into the next generation.

Today, we are going to look at ten current performers/acts in the NXT system that I feel have the best shot at achieving success on the main WWE roster. With that being said, lets jump right into the list at number ten….

    #10. The Lucha Dragons

The Lucha Dragons — Kalisto and Sin Cara, two talents that as individuals could flourish, but as a unit, make up one of the best tag-teams in WWE’s developmental system. Their ring work is solid and entertaining. Crowd pleasing. The gimmick is another story, but unfortunately, with WWE being in the middle of their PG-era, gimmicks and characters such as these two are unavoidable.

With that being said, they are what they are, and that’s a great tag-team combination. They’re the Los Matadores, only better. That’s not a knock against them, despite the fact it could be seen as one. If they remain under their current gimmick, it’s pretty much a given that they’ll never reach past mid-card, comedy-team status, but like I said, we’re going to have that one way or the other. Since that’s the case, it might as well be two guys who are as talented as these two.

I think it’s a given that these two guys will eventually make it to the main roster, and equally as predictable is the way in which they’ll be used. They’ll be two guys in a tag-team division on the main WWE roster that isn’t worth much, but for whatever it is worth, these two guys have the potential to be among the top teams in the company. While that’s not saying much, it’s saying something, and in this day and age, you pretty much have to take what you can get if you’re an aspiring wrestler.

    #9. Tyler Breeze

Much like The Lucha Dragons, I feel that Tyler Breeze is an extremely talented worker, but is unfortunately stuck in a lame-duck gimmick. On social media, I’ve read a lot of comments that makes it seem like fans are actually believers of the Tyler Breeze gimmick in the sense that it could actually go somewhere on the main roster.

I am not one of those believers.

I’m of the opinion that if Breeze jumps to the main roster and is used with the same exact character that he has now, it’s one that has a ceiling that comes with it. This type of character can only go so far. Think of talents like Fandango and Adam Rose and how they are positioned on the main roster, and you’ve got my opinion of how Breeze would be used in this type of role.

If they were to change his gimmick, he certainly has the potential to go further than this type of character would allow. He’s got the talent in the ring, he has a unique charisma about him and he’s got a great look. His promo work is decent, nothing to ride home about in my opinion, but he’s got enough tools to work with that if he was given a different type of character, it would be interesting to see how far he could take it. Maybe if they started a character-change in NXT and let it grow a bit, that would be the route to take in terms of preparing him for a call up to the big leagues.

Whether or not that ever happens is another subject entirely.

  • Jim Ross Blog: Seth Rollins’ Future, Roman Reigns’ Return, Wrestle Kingdom 9

The following are highlights of the latest blog by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:

On Seth Rollins’ future: “Rollins vs. Cena…solid main event to close the three hour broadcast…Rollins seems to be lining up to be the next “Heyman Guy” somewhere down the road. My ‘guess’ is that Rollins will be WWE Champ in the next few months. I stress it’s my ‘guess.'”

On Roman Reigns’ return: “Roman Reigns return was good….but he’s got lots of work to catch up on if he wants to eventually get to the Promised Land. Injuries are never timely and can be especially harmful for a ‘rookie’ level talent. Here’ s where I’d expect Reigns athleticism and 2nd generation instincts to kick in.”

On his upcoming broadcast return at Wrestle Kingdom 9: “Speaking of Wrestle Kingdom 9 on PPV on January 4, I’m somewhat certain that some NJPW aficionados will find something wrong with the commentary no matter who does it especially as it concerns the unique names of some of the holds that the talent’s utilize. I can only do the best job that I can and let the cards fall where they may. I do think the style of broadcasting will be different that most USA broadcasts whether that be good or bad. Yes, I fully expect to be woodshedded by some keyboard warrior within minutes of the Tokyo Dome event ending. Gotta love the passion, right?”

During the post-TLC edition of WWE RAW, a couple of announcements were made regarding this coming Tuesday night’s live edition of WWE SmackDown.

  • Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena Confirmed For The Royal Rumble

Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be the main event for next month’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

John Cena defeated Seth Rollins in a tables match (with help from the returning Roman Reigns) at Sunday’s TLC PPV to retain his #1 contender’s title shot.

The 2015 WWE Royal Rumble takes place 6 weeks from tonight on Sunday, January 25th from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Roman Reigns Returns At WWE TLC, First Royal Rumble Participant

Roman Reigns made his return at the WWE TLC pay-per-view in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday night. Reigns came out when Big Show tried to interfere during the John Cena vs. Seth Rollins “Tables Match.” Reigns hit a Superman punch on Big Show before spearing him through a table. He then hit a Superman punch on Rollins, setting him up for an Attitude Adjustment from Cena through a table for the win.

With the win, Cena is confirmed as the number one contender and will be the next challenger to WWE World Heavyweight Champion — Brock Lesnar.

As noted earlier tonight, it was confirmed during the WWE TLC “Kickoff Show” that Lesnar will be in action at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, which takes place on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Later in the show, Roman Reigns announced that he is the first official participant in the 2015 Royal Rumble.

Possible Spoiler On Two Potential Major Returns At Tonight’s WWE TLC PPV

As previously reported, there’s a strong belief that Randy Orton will make his return at the WWE TLC pay-per-view, which takes place tonight in Cleveland, Ohio.

While it’s by no means confirmed, there’s speculation that Orton returns to interfere in the main event “Tables Match” between John Cena and Seth Rollins, likely completing his babyface turn by making the save for Cena.

Although that is one scenario, there are reports that claim Orton’s first program back will be against Kane as a babyface, so there’s a chance that he won’t be returning in the Cena-Rollins match.

Additionally, there’s talk that Roman Reigns could return in the Cena-Rollins match, under the same circumstances — making the save for Cena and setting up a program with Rollins coming out of the show.

  • WWE TLC 2014: Solid on Paper

Last night on Raw, the WWE handed out some shiny plastic hardware, and more importantly, finalized the card for this Sunday’s TLC pay-per-view. With CM Punk badmouthing WWE before signing with UFC, and Brock Lesnar sitting at home while the title collects dust, it seems like the most exciting WWE-related action these days is taking place outside of the squared circle.

With that said, TLC actually looks like a solid pay-per-view on paper, especially considering it’s another event without a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match.

Ziggler has performed well in ladder matches during his career. Will the Show Off steal the show on Sunday?

Ziggler has performed well in ladder matches during his career. Will the Show Off steal the show on Sunday?

In general, gimmick pay-per-views can be pretty lame. With events such as Elimination Chamber, Hell in a Cell, TLC, and Extreme Rules, the stipulations often seem forced and predictable (Money in the Bank is the only exception). However, it seems like the gimmick could be highly beneficial this time around.

This is due to the fact that most of the matchups would be forgettable without a special stipulation. Take Ryback vs. Kane for example. Nobody wants to see a washed-up Libertarian and supposed steroid user battle in a regular singles contest; that’s the same garbage fans are served up every week on Raw. However, if the two are going to beat the hell out of each other with chairs, it increases the possibility (albeit slightly) that fans will remain interested.

The same holds true for Dolph Ziggler and Luke Harper. They are two of the better workers in the company, and they’d undoubtedly put on a great show without any gimmick at all, but the ladder match stipulation gives them the opportunity to completely steal the show.

Not only will the midcard benefit from the TLC gimmick, hardcore stipulations were necessary at the top of the card to get this event over with the fans. In particular, the tables match between John Cena and Seth Rollins should be one of the highlights of the night, as Cena will attempt to remain number one contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Several Top Names To Miss Final WWE RAW Of 2014?

WWE Superstar Bray Wyatt is currently double-booked for the December 29th edition of RAW in Washington, D.C., as well as the rare live event on the same night in Richmond, Virginia. It’s said that there’s a possibility that Wyatt will in fact appear on both shows, as they are only 100 miles apart.

Other names advertised for the live event instead of RAW that night, which will be the final edition of RAW for 2014, are Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, The Usos, Kane, Goldust and Stardust. Whether or not the final RAW will go off without all of those top-tier names remains to be seen.

  • Reigns Backstage At Survivor Series, Update On The Rock’s HBO Show & More

    – Roman Reigns, who appeared “via satellite” at Survivor Series, was actually backstage at the show. Reigns will be back in action next month .

    – New WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz and Damien Sandow spoke with Byron Saxton at after Survivor Series. As we saw on the pay-per-view, The Miz took full credit for the win.

    – Saxton also spoke with Dean Ambrose after his he got beat down by Bray Wyatt. Ambrose said we all knew the match would end ugly. Wins & losses come and go, but it’s all about respect and their feud is far from over.

    – The Rock posted the following on Facebook about his new “Ballers” show on HBO:

WWE Survivor Series — Where Legends Are Born & Moments Are Made

In 1987, WWE presented their first ever “Survivor Series” event, the first non-WrestleMania pay-per-view event, originally designed to steal viewers away from their main competition at the time, NWA’s “Starrcade,” which was the south’s version of “WrestleMania” (even though Starrcade came first) and was WWE’s attempt to throw down the gauntlet to the pay-per-view industry.

Basically put, if you were a pay-per-view provider and you decided to carry Starrcade, you would not be able to carry WrestleMania, a proven success in the pay-per-view industry.

    That was the beginning.

From there, throughout the years, a number of historical events would take place at a Survivor Series event.

In no particular order, you can point to single Superstar debuts such as The Undertaker in 1990, which was also the debut of the infamous Gobbeldy Gooker. Which was the more famous of the two, well, I’ll let you decide.

1996 saw the debut of “Rocky Maivia,” to this day arguably the biggest cross-over name to ever emanate from the world of sports entertainment. At the time, while he was touted as being the first-ever third generation performer, and as “Good Ole’ JR” would say, “that’s gonna be the man, right there! That’s blue-chipper, right there!” with all of the enthusiasm the only Jim Ross could muster, oh how true those words would come to be as time went on.

One year later, the most infamous moment perhaps in all of WWE would take place. A moment that certainly began the shift in the WWE vs. WCW “Monday Night Wars” would take place, as not only did Bret Hart get “screwed” in what would become known as “The Montreal Screwjob,” but in many ways, that became the birth of the “Mr. McMahon” character, one that without he, the “Stone Cold” Steve Austin character may have never reached the heights that he would go on to achieve throughout his illustrious career.

In 1999, WWE’s first ever Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle, made his official in-ring pay-per-view debut, defeating Shawn Stasiak in the second match on the card.

In 2002, the Survivor Series featured another “first,” as this would be the first time that we were treated to a new gimmick match known as the “Elimination Chamber.” A man notorious among the wrestlers within the profession, just a few months ago the match concept was thrown out, large in part — according to various rumors — because of how unforgiving the structure was for those who had to actually compete inside it.

Most recently, the big “debut” of a match, concept or character took place at the November 18, 2012 edition of the WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view, which took place in Indianapolis, Indiana, as three men who would become known as “The Shield” made their official WWE main roster debut. Those three men would become known as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

Just to show how important those three men are, one is involved (as a Team Captain, no less) in the main event of this year’s Survivor Series, which takes place tonight from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

    That man is Seth Rollins.

Another one of the former Shield members, Dean Ambrose, is in what is being billed as arguably the legitimate co-main event of the evening, as he collides with another rising up-and-comer, Bray Wyatt.

    And that leaves Roman Reigns.

Well, while he’s not officially booked on the actual card for tonight’s show, let’s just say there are a lot of rumors going around that claim we just may see him involved on the show tonight in some form or fashion after all.

Finally, that leaves two other names.

First up, the hometown boy. St. Louis’ own “The Viper” Randy Orton is rumored to make his return to WWE, after taking a brief hiatus to film a WWE Studios project, “The Condemned 2.”

Last, and absolutely not least, is “The Icon.”

While yours truly is not holding his breath and is going to take a “wait and see” approach before getting overly excited, rumors on the internet over the past few days insist that a certain Crow-painted style performer will make his very, very highly-anticipated WWE pay-per-view debut tonight at the Scottrade Center.

That’s right, folks. “The man they call Sting” is rumored to make his WWE debut, after all these years, at the same show that has produced so many memorable debuts, characters, matches and moments. If, in fact, “The Stinger” does make his WWE debut on tonight’s show, this writer has his new favorite Survivor Series moment of all-time.

We’re just hours away! Make sure to keep it locked right here at SEScoops.com for the most extensive, in-depth, live results coverage of tonight’s WWE Survivor Series 2014 pay-per-view!

Update On Survivor Series Surprises: Another Big One Planned? (Possible Spoiler)

As noted throughout the weekend, wrestling legend Sting is expected to have a presence of some sort on tonight’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view.

We also noted that Randy Orton, who along with Sting, is in St. Louis, the site of tonight’s pay-per-view, and could potentially make his return tonight as well.

Finally, we noted that Roman Reigns is another possibility for tonight’s Survivor Series show.

Regarding these surprises, and there’s said to be another one or two besides the aforementioned three, that will be held back due to the belief that Sting and Orton, if those are the two that they run with, is enough for one show and that any additional surprises would be overkill and would actually take away from the importance of the others.

  • Latest Update On Surprises Planned For Survivor Series

As we’ve been reporting over the weekend, fans tuning in to tonight’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view can expect a few big surprises. Both Sting and Randy Orton are in St. Louis for the show and are rumored to be making appearances on the show.

There’s also been some buzz that a third big name will be at Survivor Series. Roman Reigns, who was in Reno, Nevada over the weekend for the Wizard World convention, is flying into St. Louis and will be backstage at Survivor Series. It’s unknown whether Reigns will appear on camera, but he’s advertised for next month’s TLC pay-per-view (and multiple live events in December) and he’s either ready to return or getting very close.

Chris Jericho, who performed with Fozzy in Minnesota last night, went into full “Jeri-troll” mode on Twitter, teasing fans that he could be the third rumored surprise for Survivor Series:

Future Plans For Finn Balor & Hideo Itami, New Documentary On The Shield

    – The recent “Journey to SummerSlam” special that aired on the WWE Network focusing on Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins embarking on their first post-Shield journeys, is scheduled to be extended and released as a DVD/Blu-ray project next year.

    – There’s been some talk recently that Finn Balor and Hideo Itami will be making a run as NXT Tag-Team Champions before having singles runs in NXT. While there is no word regarding when the two will be called up to the main roster, it is believed that part of Balor’s deal when he signed with WWE was that he would not stay in the developmental system for too long.

The following are highlights of a new Reno Gazette-Journal interview with Roman Reigns:

On those who call him a “mini-John Cena”: Last time I checked, I’m 6’3″ 265 pounds, which is bigger than John Cena. Last time I checked, my hair is long and jet black, and last time I checked John Cena’s isn’t. I’m way better looking and I’m way more athletic than he is so for anybody to compare me to him is completely asinine.”

On fans comparing the success of the former Shield members: “This is what everybody needs to understand, we’re all doing awesome. I mean, we’re all in that very top ring, we’re all top competitors and we’re all the future of the WWE. For any fan to complain that one of us is doing better than the other … is just complete B.S.”
