What is the WWE Royal Rumble?

The Royal Rumble is a 30-person battle royal match held annually by WWE.

It features separate matches for men and women, with the winners earning a world championship opportunity at WrestleMania, WWE’s biggest event of the year.

How Does the Match Start?

The match begins with two wrestlers who draw entry numbers 1 and 2.

At regular intervals, usually 90 seconds but sometimes up to two minutes, a new participant enters the ring. This continues until all 30 competitors have entered.

Elimination Rules

Eliminations occur when a wrestler is thrown over the top rope, and both feet touch the floor outside the ring.

If only one foot or another part of the body touches the ground, the wrestler remains in the match. Importantly, exits through the middle or bottom ropes do not count as eliminations.

How to Win the Royal Rumble

The objective is to be the last person standing in the ring after all other competitors have been eliminated.

The winner secures a main event spot at WrestleMania, where they can challenge for a world championship of their choosing.

The future Hall of Famer planted a kiss on the giant, distracting him long enough to pull him over the top rope. This clever and surprising elimination demonstrated that in the Royal Rumble, brains can triumph over brawn in unexpected ways.

4. Santino Marella’s Record-Breaking Elimination (2009)

While not shocking in terms of WHO was eliminated, Santino Marella’s self-elimination in 2009 was surprising for its brevity. Marella holds the dubious distinction of the fastest elimination in Royal Rumble history, lasting just one second before being tossed out by Kane.

This lightning-quick exit showcases the unpredictable nature of the Royal Rumble and how even the briefest appearances can become legendary.

3. Hulk Hogan’s Unexpected Exit (1992)

The 1992 Royal Rumble, often cited as one of the best ever, featured a surprising moment when Hulk Hogan, one of wrestling’s biggest stars, was eliminated by Sid Justice.

This unexpected turn of events not only shocked fans but also set the stage for Ric Flair’s historic victory. Hogan’s elimination demonstrated that even the most popular superstars aren’t safe in the chaotic environment of the Royal Rumble.

2. Roman Reigns’ Surprise Exit (2016)

Roman Reigns, who was the reigning WWE Champion at the time, entered the 2016 Royal Rumble match with a target on his back as the winner of the Rumble match would become the WWE Champion, something that ironically had not occurred since the ’92 Rumble.

However, few expected him to be eliminated, especially given his status as the company’s top star. His shocking elimination by Triple H sent the crowd into a frenzy and set the stage for a dramatic finish to the match between Hunter and Dean Ambrose.

1. Maven Eliminates The Undertaker (2002)

Number one is undoubtedly the moment when Tough Enough winner Maven shocked everyone by eliminating The Undertaker in 2002. The Deadman had been dominating the match and was caught off guard by Maven’s perfectly timed dropkick, sending him tumbling over the top rope.

The look of disbelief on The Undertaker’s face, mirrored by the crowd’s reaction, solidified this as an unforgettable Royal Rumble moment.

The Best (and Worst) WWE Royal Rumble Winners

The Best WWE Royal Rumble Winners

1. Stone Cold Steve Austin (1997, 1998, 2001)

Stone Cold Steve Austin is the undisputed king of the Royal Rumble. With three wins under his belt, Austin’s victories solidified his status as one of the greatest superstars in WWE history. His 1997 win is particularly memorable, as he cheated to secure his spot, igniting his legendary feud with Bret Hart.

2. Shawn Michaels (1995, 1996)

Shawn Michaels’ back-to-back Royal Rumble wins showcased his athleticism and charisma. His 1995 victory, where he entered at No. 1 and lasted until the end, is one of the most iconic performances in the event’s history.

3. Ric Flair (1992)

Ric Flair’s 1992 win was more than just a victory…it was a masterpiece. Entering at No. 3, Flair lasted over an hour to win the vacant WWE Championship. His performance remains a benchmark for endurance and quality in the Rumble.

4. Becky Lynch (2019)

Becky Lynch’s 2019 victory was a groundbreaking moment for women’s wrestling. “The Man” capitalized on her momentum to headline WrestleMania 35, making history as part of the first-ever women’s main event.

The Worst WWE Royal Rumble Winners

1. Vince McMahon (1999)

The 1999 Royal Rumble winner was none other than WWE’s chairman, Vince McMahon. While it made for an entertaining storyline, his victory over Steve Austin felt like a missed opportunity to elevate another superstar.

2. Alberto Del Rio (2011)

Alberto Del Rio’s win in the largest Royal Rumble match (40 entrants) was met with lukewarm reactions. His victory did little to boost his career or create lasting memories

3. Batista (2014)

Batista’s 2014 win came at the expense of fan-favorite Daniel Bryan, sparking a major backlash. While Batista’s legacy is undeniable, this victory felt like the wrong choice for the WWE Universe.

4. Big John Studd (1989)

As one of the earliest Royal Rumble winners, Big John Studd’s 1989 victory lacked the stakes and excitement of later editions. It’s a largely forgotten moment in WWE’s illustrious history.

Best WWE Royal Rumble Returns Ever (Ranked)

The WWE Royal Rumble has long been a stage for epic comebacks and shocking surprises. Over the years, fans have witnessed some of the most electrifying returns in wrestling history during this annual event. Let’s dive into the best WWE Royal Rumble returns ever, ranked by their impact and crowd reaction.

5. Mr Perfect shows up in 2002

Mr. Perfect made a notable return to WWE during the 2002 Royal Rumble, captivating fans with his presence after a long absence. Entering as the 25th participant, he quickly made an impact by showing that he could more than keep up years after his heyday.

His performance was impressive enough to see him reach the final three competitors in the match, setting the stage for a return to regular television for the former Intercontinental Champion.

4. Christian Returns to aid Edge

In 2021, Christian made a surprise return at the Royal Rumble, marking his first official match since 2014. This moment was particularly emotional as he reunited with Edge in the ring, creating a nostalgic atmosphere for long-time fans of both superstars before both would head to AEW in the years following.

3. Rey Mysterio returns in 2018

Rey Mysterio made a stunning return to WWE during the 2018 Royal Rumble, entering as the 27th participant. His comeback was unexpected and popped the audience huge, marking a significant moment in his career after being away from WWE for several years.

What really added to the impact was how Rey’s number 30 entrance at the 2014 event was marred by boos, mainly because he wasn’t Daniel Bryan, so this was a great return.

2. John Cena’s Miraculous 2008 Comeback

John Cena’s return at the 2008 Royal Rumble stands out as one of the most memorable moments in WWE history. After suffering a torn pectoral muscle that was expected to sideline him for months, Cena made an astonishing comeback just three months later.

As the 30th entrant, Cena’s music hit, and Madison Square Garden erupted in a deafening roar. The shock and excitement of his unexpected return, coupled with his eventual victory, solidified this as one of the greatest Royal Rumble moments ever.

1. Edge’s Emotional 2020 Return

Nine years after being forced to retire due to neck injuries, Edge made an unforgettable return at the 2020 Royal Rumble. The crowd’s reaction was nothing short of electric as the Rated-R Superstar stepped into the ring for the first time since WrestleMania 27 in 2011.

Edge’s comeback wasn’t just a nostalgic moment; it reignited his career and led to several high-profile feuds, making it one of the most impactful returns in Royal Rumble history and our pick for the greatest return in Royal Rumble history.

WWE’s 2024 Events Ranked: From Crown Jewel to WrestleMania

2024 has been a monumental year for WWE, offering fans a series of Premium Live Events (PLEs) that have captivated audiences worldwide. From shocking title changes to iconic rivalries and unforgettable matches, WWE’s creative direction under Triple H has delivered some of the most compelling content in recent memory.

This year also saw WWE’s continued global expansion, hosting events in Australia, Germany, and France. These international crowds brought unparalleled energy, elevating each event’s atmosphere to unforgettable levels.

Marquee events like WrestleMania XL, Royal Rumble, and SummerSlam provided historic moments and emotional climaxes, while smaller PLEs like Bash in Berlin and Backlash France offered surprising highlights. However, not every show reached its potential—some suffered from predictable outcomes, lackluster storylines, or uneven match quality.

In this ranking, we’ll evaluate all 12 WWE PLEs of 2024, from Survivor Series to WrestleMania XL, diving into their highs, lows, and what made each event truly stand out—or miss the mark. Here is our definitive ranking of every WWE PLE of 2024, from worst to best.

Schedule of Upcoming WWE PLE/PPV Events

12. Crown Jewel

While WWE’s Saudi Arabia shows have steadily improved in quality, Crown Jewel 2024 failed to leave a lasting impression. Matches like Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther delivered in-ring quality, but the event lacked a defining moment to make it stand out. The absence of significant storyline progression or jaw-dropping surprises made this event feel like a stopgap rather than a must-watch show.

11. King and Queen of the Ring

The return of the King and Queen of the Ring tournament brought back a classic WWE concept, with Gunther and Nia Jax emerging as winners. However, the event fell flat outside the tournament matches, with an undercard that lacked energy and stakes. While the prestige of the tournament added some gravitas, it wasn’t enough to elevate this event above mediocrity.

10. Survivor Series: WarGames

The annual Survivor Series promised a thrilling night of WarGames matches, but inconsistent booking dragged it down. The women’s WarGames match suffered from disjointed storytelling, and while the men’s match brought excitement and hard-hitting action, it couldn’t salvage the rest of the event. With predictable outcomes and filler matches, this installment of Survivor Series felt like a missed opportunity.

9. Bad Blood

Hyped as the return of a classic PLE, Bad Blood 2024 delivered mixed results. The Hell in a Cell match between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre was an instant classic, showcasing brutal storytelling and physicality. Unfortunately, the rest of the card lacked depth, with few matches leaving a lasting impact. The overall lack of balance made this event feel underwhelming despite its marquee attraction.

8. Elimination Chamber: Perth

WWE’s foray into Perth, Australia, brought a solid Elimination Chamber event, with standout performances from Drew McIntyre and Becky Lynch, who triumphed in their respective Chamber matches. While the matches themselves were entertaining, the predictability of the outcomes dampened the overall excitement. The event succeeded in showcasing top-tier talent but fell short in delivering major surprises or fresh storylines.

7. Bash in Berlin

Bash in Berlin benefited from the electric energy of the German crowd, but the in-ring action was a mixed bag. Gunther vs. Randy Orton delivered a hard-hitting showcase, and CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre’s strap match brought grit and intensity. However, the rest of the card felt average, lacking the kind of marquee moments needed to elevate the event higher on this list.

6. Clash at the Castle: Scotland

Set against the passionate backdrop of a Scottish crowd, Clash at the Castle provided a memorable night of action. Highlights included Cody Rhodes battling AJ Styles in an emotionally charged I Quit match and CM Punk’s interference in Drew McIntyre’s World Heavyweight Title match, which created one of the night’s most dramatic moments. While the event had its lulls, the atmosphere and key matchups made it stand out.

5. Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble once again proved why it’s a fan favorite, with Cody Rhodes and Bayley emerging as the respective Rumble match winners. Surprise appearances from Jade Cargill and Jordynne Grace injected fresh excitement into the event. While some of the non-Rumble matches didn’t reach the same level of buzz, the unpredictability and stakes of the Rumble bouts ensured this PLE started the year on a high note.

4. Money in the Bank

The ladder matches stole the show at Money in the Bank 2024, with Drew McIntyre and Tiffany Stratton claiming the coveted briefcases. Elsewhere, Sami Zayn’s defense against Bron Breakker added intensity to the evening. However, the main event failed to meet expectations, preventing this otherwise thrilling event from breaking into the top three.

3. SummerSlam

SummerSlam 2024 was a blockbuster event, delivering major twists and unforgettable moments. Dominik Mysterio’s shocking betrayal of Rhea Ripley was a storyline highlight, while Roman Reigns’ long-awaited return injected drama into the proceedings. Cody Rhodes successfully defending his title capped off a night filled with standout matches and surprises.

2. Backlash France

International shows can sometimes feel like filler, but Backlash 2024 in Lyon defied expectations. Cody Rhodes and AJ Styles put on a wrestling clinic, while Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill captured the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles in a high-energy bout. The raucous French crowd enhanced the atmosphere, making this a standout event that rivaled WWE’s biggest spectacles.

1. WrestleMania 40

The grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania 40, delivered everything fans could hope for over two nights. Cody Rhodes finally “finished the story” by dethroning Roman Reigns in an emotionally charged main event. Stellar women’s matches and shocking title changes made this WrestleMania feel historic. As always, the pageantry and star power of WWE’s flagship event ensured its place at the top of the rankings.

Indianapolis To Host 2025 Royal Rumble, Future WrestleMania & SummerSlam Events

Indianapolis is making history in WWE as Triple H made a major announcement regarding WWE tentpole PLE plans in the future.

WWE released a video of Triple H and Pat McAfee revealing that the company will be making stops at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis not just for Royal Rumble this February but they’re on tap down the line for SummerSlam and even WrestleMania

With SummerSlam happening in Cleveland, one could assume that Indianapolis will be on the agenda for that specific PLE to take place in 2025. As for WrestleMania, it’s possible that Indianapolis would host WrestleMania 43 in 2027 as WrestleMania 41 will go down in Las Vegas and WrestleMania 42 will happen in Minneapolis.

Serendipituosly enough, WWE Raw this Monday will take place in Indianapolis and McAfee has already had an interesting week when it comes to his WWE encounters. Not only was McAfee in attendence to witness the debut of The Wyatt Sicks, but the new creepy faction has interrupted the feed of The Pat McAfee Show on numerous occassions.

Raw has some matches in store for Indy as Chad Gable will take on Braun Strowman and Bronson Reed in hopes of qualifying for Money In The Bank and Karrion Kross will face Kofi Kingston as Kross has been needling Kofi for stealing the spotlight in The New Day.

Alalshikh: Saudi Arabia Looking for Royal Rumble & WrestleMania In 2026 or 2027

The 2026 WWE Royal Rumble and possibly WrestleMania 42 could take place in Saudi Arabia if higher-ups with the Middle Eastern Kingdom have their way.

During an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour podcast, Saudi GEA chairman Turki Alalshikh was asked about plans for the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania to happen in Saudi Arabia. Alalshikh explained that “we are talking around 2026-2027.”

Alalshikh’s hopes for the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania in 2016 are hardly unfounded. A recent report revealed that Saudi authorities are hopeful that both shows will take place in the nation in the future. If so, it’ll be the first time either the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania has taken place outside of North America.

Events In Saudi Arabia

Talk of WrestleMania in Saudi Arabia comes at an interesting time in the event’s history. Both John Cena and Cody Rhodes have advocated for the first non-North American WrestleMania to happen in the UK, an idea that has been supported by recently-reelected London Mayor Sadiq Khan. With that said, WWE President Nick Khan has stated that the ‘Big 4’ events will remain in North America for the time being.

As for the Royal Rumble, WWE held its ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’ in 2018 with the titular 50-man match being won by Braun Strowman. The event sparked controversy given that no women were allowed at the event though Saudi Arabia has since gotten rid of this ban.

Alalshikh at a WWE Crown Jewel press event with Paul Levesque and Stephanie McMahon-Levesque.

At the time, it was reported that Saudi authorities had requested Yokozuna and The Ultimate Warrior for the Rumble match despite both having been dead for years at that point. Though it wasn’t Yokozuna, WWE did involve sumo-wrestler Hiroki Sumi into the match.

WWE’s next event in Saudi Arabia will be King And Queen of the Ring. The May 25, event will see the finals of the two titular tournaments as well as various title matches.

WWE Shifting Start Times For Upcoming Premium Live Events

The landscape of professional wrestling has changed significantly in recent years. Fans no longer need to stay up until midnight to see the conclusion of a WWE pay-per-view. Premium live events have become more concise, and now they are scheduled to start earlier. WWE will maintain the earlier start time for its events, per PWInsider. This will include NXT Heatwave, SummerSlam, and The Bash at Berlin. The current WWE PLE schedule reflects this decision.

In March, there were discussions about potentially shifting domestic PPVs to an earlier start time, but a final decision had not been made at that time.
Traditionally, WWE has aired its pre-shows at 7 p.m. ET, with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET. This timing was standard until a few years ago when the start time for the main card was moved to 8 p.m. ET.

CEO Nick Khan recently confirmed WWE’s goal to host its five major PLEs (WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank) within the United States, while looking to expand their international touring with the PLE’s. Since overseas shows typically begin much earlier for American audiences, the adjustment to earlier start times for these events should not represent a significant change.

How Jordynne Grace’s 2024 WWE Royal Rumble Appearance Came Together

WWE fans were a bit shocked to see Jordynne Grace in the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble match. This surprising appearance made way for a couple amazing spots with Naomi and Ivy Nile, and there is a lot more behind that cameo in Tropicana Field.

Behind The Scenes Info

Sean Ross Sapp reported a bit more information on Fightful Select about TNA Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace showing up at the Royal Rumble. It was noted that WWE had contacted external companies regarding potential surprise entrants for the Royal Rumble.

According to the report, WWE reached out to TNA over the weekend, and the arrangements were made for Jordynne Grace, who is still under contract with TNA, to appear during the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble match.

It’s reported that Grace underwent a physical and blood work on Monday before flying to Florida on Thursday to participate in the Royal Rumble rehearsals.
Some within TNA had heard about this possibility earlier in the month, coinciding with broader WWE and TNA rumors.

Sources within WWE reportedly mentioned that both TNA and Jordynne Grace were cooperative and easy to work with throughout the process. This was obviously great exposure for their brand.

WWE Has Royal Rumble History With Knockouts Champion

In 2022, Mickie James appeared in the Women’s Royal Rumble match as Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion. She was still under contract with them at the time of her appearance with WWE. That was also a big moment for Impact, because the Knockouts Championship got exposure in the big WWE match.

Pat McAfee Claims WWE Didn’t Give Him Heads-Up About Royal Rumble Match Entry

WWE fans saw several surprises during the 2024 Royal Rumble event. Pat McAfee returned to commentary, and he got a spot in the Rumble match. It appears that WWE sprung that match spot on him.

Pat McAfee Speaks on his Royal Rumble Return

Pat McAfee’s entrance music was the first that fans heard during the Royal Rumble. Michael Cole was also incredibly happy to call the event alongside his real-life friend. McAfee’s night was only getting started as he added another big event to his WWE resume.

While speaking about his experience in a digital exclusive, McAfee said he couldn’t pass up on the chance to return by the side of Cole and Graves when he was offered the commentary role for the evening.

“Yeah, coming back to get a chance to be in front of the WWE Universe is an absolute honor. I was told, ‘Hey, Pat, you wanna come back and commentate?’ I said, hell yes. The Royal Rumble, what an event. Stories can be written, where dreams can come true. ‘You want to commentate?’ I said, ‘Hell yeah,’ work with Michael Cole, the greatest of all time, alongside Corey Graves with a fresh baby, fresh mindset, fresh haircut. I said, ‘I would love to do that.'”

Pat McAfee Wasn’t Given A Heads Up

When it comes to his Royal Rumble match appearance, McAfee said that he had no idea that he was going to be in the match. Although Pat wasn’t dressed for the occasion, he went with the flow of things, and that included a very brief appearance in the match.

“All of a sudden, what, 22, I’m in the Royal Rumble? Nobody gave me a heads-up about that. Got my cowboy boots on. Michael Cole let me go in there. That was rude of him. I thought we were friends. Then there was a thing in there. Seven foot three, okay? You’re just looking up at a statue of a being.”

“I see little Bron Breakker go like barking at me. I’m like, I’m not supposed to be in here. Why would I be in here right now? I’m not prepared for this. Also, who would I be to take a main event at WrestleMania spot away from somebody? So I got my ass out of there. Now I went back in because I thought to myself, wait a minute, am I just gonna be a coward? “I realized quickly, ‘Yeah, I think tonight I am.’ I went right back to the booth. And it was great. It was a great show,”

Pat McAfee may be busy with his ESPN gig, but he wouldn’t miss the Royal Rumble event. He was able to call the entire show, and he even returned to the commentary table after his short stint in the 2024 Royal Rumble match.

WWE Royal Rumble Takeaways: Bayley & Cody Rhodes are headed to WrestleMania

The 2024 WWE Royal Rumble PLE is in the books and the road to WrestleMania is officially started.

This year’s event in front of over 40,000 fans inside Tropicana Field in Tampa, Florida was as hot as we thought it would be thanks to special returns, major moments, and key directions taken on the way to WrestleMania 40 in April.

What are the highs? Lows? Most memorable moments? Forgettable moments? We’re here for you.

Royal Rumble Pre-Show

The event began with a Hulk Hogan voiced promo vignette that hyped the show and the entire time I asked myself “why?” It’s shameful for WWE to continue trotting Hogan out in a way that highlights him and positions him front and center as a spokesperson for the company. What sort of needle move does he provide the company at this point? It’s bad any week, but especially this one, in which WWE was playing damage control thanks to Vince McMahon and the horrific allegations against him.

Hogan aside, the open to the show was excellent. The vignette did the hype job, but WWE also showed various stars like Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, CM Punk, and Rhea Ripley arriving at the building. It felt like something the UFC would produce and worked to position those competing tonight as the cream of the crop.

Women’s Royal Rumble Match

Naomi, Grace, weird Nattie elimination. Dupri. Cargill over Jax.

The 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble took a while to get going, but once it did, it worked very well.

The root story throughout was two-fold — Bayley lasting for a long time as the iron man of the bout and Nia Jax rolling through other entrants to build up for the showdown with the debuting Jade Cargill. The latter story was executed perfectly. Cargill taking Jax would popped the audience and made her look as impressive as WWE hyped her to be since she first signed with the company. Cargill didn’t win, but had a memorable debut that will play with fans as she continues to appear on television.

Other notable takeaways? Jordynne Grace made her Rumble debut, but of course as a member of the TNA roster as the company’s Knockouts Champion. Grace showed a lot out there and was given a bunch even though she isn’t a part of WWE. She also was gifted a prominent elimination by Bianca Belair in a memorable KOD onto the ring apron spot.

Speaking of TNA stars, Naomi made her return to WWE during the match as the number two entrant in the match. I could do without the GLOW gimmick and comes across as a bigger star without it, but it stands out with WWE’s top tier production.

The real loser of the match was Maxine Dupri. Yikes. Michael Cole touted her as “heavily improved” as she walked to the ring, but then botched multiple spots and looked entirely out of her element.

Bayley was the winner of the match after a fun final elimination of Cargill and the returning Liv Morgan. Bayley has already had a WrestleMania championship match in the works against fellow Damage CNTRL member, Iyo Sky, and her winning here is a smart way to continue that program and officially get to the match.

The match didn’t have any signature returns in the form of a Sasha Banks or an AJ Lee, but it was entertaining for what it was and left enough on the table for the men’s match later in the night.

Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton vs. LA Knight vs. AJ Styles – WWE Universal Championship

There just isn’t much to say about this one. Roman Reigns is still the champion and the world knew he would be. It’s the problem with nearly every single Royal Rumble championship match.

There were some cool moments in this with Reigns piling up his opponents and trying to pin them. The Solo Sikoa interference got boos, but not the right kind. Reigns’ continued reliance on interference in matches has run thin and that was the response more than true heel heat.

It was what it was, but nobody will remember this one next year at this time.

Logan Paul vs. Kevin Owens – WWE United States Championship

A pretty good match with a lousy finish. Logan Paul getting handed brass knuckles only for Kevin Owens to use them and get caught with them was backwards from a psychological perspective and left the audience confused on how to react. Happy because Owens used the knuckles? I guess. Frustrated that he lost? That too.

The idea here and the takeaway is that WWE wanted to make sure both Paul and Owens were protected. They did that, but by the end it seemed unnecessary given that Owens is someone on the roster that can reliably lose, but still be just as over. Plus, Paul will certainly be lined up for a WrestleMania match, so why not just have him win and win clean.

The whole thing is ripe for a rematch.

Men’s Royal Rumble Match

Given the strong build to the match, star power included, and different directions to go in terms of a winner, “they got where they needed to go,” isn’t high praise. It’s reality, though.

The 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble Match, didn’t grip the audience like the women’s match did this year and was full of odd focuses around talent that didn’t deserve them. Karrion Kross and Bobby Lashley got a huge moment in the match and the Tropicana Field audience couldn’t have cared less. Add into that some ill-timed production botches for key moments and the result was a bit of a mess when it came to in-match stories and moments.

CM Punk received a strong reaction. Cody did too, so it was fitting that those two were the final two standing. Neither got the hyped up reaction you’d want for their moment because the already timid crowd was split thanks to the stories of both Punk and Cody going into the match. The crowd seemed to side more with Cody and popped when he won.

Other notable angles coming out surround Bron Breakker, who was featured prominently with multiple eliminations, but the victim of the production botch that saw his key elimination of Omos essentially forgotten and not featured with a timed out camera shot. It happened, but nobody saw it thanks to JD McDonagh’s entrance occurring at the same exact time. Carmelo Hayes also was featured due to how long he lasted in the match, but didn’t have the same type of dominant focus as Breakker did.

So, it was fine. Cody heads to the main event of WrestleMania against Roman Reigns and the Raw side of the WrestleMania main event will get sorted out soon. It needed more big spots, more “moments,” more action, and much less focus on undercard stories. But, they got where they needed to go in the end.

Overall

Kind of a bizarre night at the office for WWE. The Royal Rumble intrigue is firmly rooted in the element of surprise and neither the men’s or women’s Rumble match had a major one. Little ones in each, but nothing earth shattering.

The filler matches between both Rumbles were incredibly disappointing with finishes that came across as weak and passive. Those helped slow the audience momentum ahead of the main event, which couldn’t fully pull a reaction of any kind out of the crowd.

It’s a C grade show and definitively so.

Cody Rhodes Wins 2024 WWE Royal Rumble Match To Punch His Ticket To WrestleMania 40

WWE presented the Royal Rumble to Tropicana Field attendees, and the night was packed with noteworthy moments. Triple H’s influence on WWE’s creative direction is clearly apparent as the Road to WrestleMania begins to gain momentum.

The Royal Rumble match finish

The final competitors in the 2024 Royal Rumble match were Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, Damian Priest, Drew McIntyre, GUNTHER, and Sami Zayn, with Zayn getting the #30 spot. They battled hard in Tropicana Field, none of them wanting to give an inch in the match.

Then Zayn eliminated Damian Priest, only to have Drew throw Zayn over the top right after that. Rhodes, Punk, McIntyre, and GUNTHER were the final four in the match. They then showed Seth Rollins watching the match from a skybox in Tropicana Field, while Roman Reigns sat backstage viewing on a monitor in the back.

Drew McIntyre punished Punk with chops as GUNTHER did the same to Cody. It was almost a competition of chops for a while as they punished their opponents.

Then McIntyre nailed a Claymore Kick on GUNTHER and Cody before counting down from 3 and doing the same to Punk. Despite selling the finisher, Punk was able to get McIntyre on his shoulders and throw him out of the match.

Cody got GUNTHER over the top rope and caused him to smash to the floor. The final two in the match were CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. After the two fought for a bit, and teased finishers on each other, Rhodes hit a Bionic Elbow and Punk got out of another Crossroads attempt.

Punk got the upper hand and pointed to the WrestleMania sign. Then The American Nightmare nailed a Crossroads, but he couldn’t get the energy to even try to throw Punk over the top rope. Punk hit a GTS on Cody next, but he also didn’t have enough left in the tank to try for an elimination.

CM Punk nailed a Pedigree next as Corey Graves said, “If you know, you know” on commentary. Punk then tried for another GTS, but Cody caught his knee, and he threw the Second City Savior over the top rope.

What’s Next

Cody Rhodes will go on to WrestleMania. It absolutely looks like he will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Universal Title at this point, which would give him a chance to finish his story.

Andrade Makes WWE Return During 2024 Royal Rumble Match

WWE brought the Royal Rumble for fans in Tropicana Field, and the night was full of memorable moments. Triple H’s vision for WWE’s creative direction is more than evident at this point, as the Road to WrestleMania is only starting to heat up. Fans saw an exciting return early on in the Men’s Royal Rumble match.

Andrade’s WWE Return

Andrade El Idolo left WWE three years ago, when the company granted his release. He had a stint in AEW, but that time is now over. The former NXT Champion is now back in WWE.

Andrade shocked fans in Tropicana Field as the #4 entry in the 2024 Royal Rumble match. He came out with a mask and a new entrance robe. He also had new music.

The former AEW star’s return brought a big pop from the Tropicana Field crowd as well. Now, he is back in WWE, and it’s anyone’s guess what he will do next.

Andrade’s AEW Departure.

Andrade, although there was a short period of time when he almost inked a new AEW deal, decided to leave Tony Khan’s company. He was quite vocal on his way out that he was wrapping up his time with AEW after losing to Miro at Worlds End.

Andrade’s return to WWE has a lot to do with Charlotte Flair. She pulled for him to come back, and WWE obviously listened. Sadly, Charlotte Flair is currently out of action with an injury. Andrade will be firmly back in WWE’s landscape by the time The Queen returns.

Kairi Sane’s Creative Royal Rumble Save Reminds People Of Classic Spider-Man Moment

Kairi Sane did a wild move to save herself from elimination from the Women’s Royal Rumble match and reminded everyone of a classic Spider-Man moment in the process.

The female pirate entered the battle royal at #11 and she started wreaking havoc with the help of her other Damage CTRL teammates immediately.

This momentum was halted however after Kayden Carter entered the match at #13. She and Katana Chance immediately started working as a tag team. At one point Carter almost eliminated Sane but she avoided elimination by a miracle.

The Damage CTRL member tucked her legs against the LED Board and hung on for a while, reminding people of the Spider-Man 2 scene with Tobey Maguire where the Friendly Neighbourhood hero stops a train using his webs:

Bayley Wins The Women’s Royal Rumble

Though Kairi Sane didn’t last for much longer after this and she was eliminated. Her Kabuki Warrior partner Asuka followed Sane and was eliminated by Chance right after.

At the end, the match was won by one of their teammates as Bayley last eliminated a returning Liv Morgan to win the 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble match.

This wasn’t the only newsworthy moment from the Women’s Rumble as a big debut during the bout got people talking. You can check out all about it here.

Multiple WWE NXT Superstars Spotted At Tropicana Field Before Royal Rumble

WWE’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view is going down in Tropicana Field tonight. You can find any information about how to view the show here. If you plan on watching and want to avoid spoilers, then you may need to stop reading here.

NXT Superstars In Tampa Before Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble match is always bound to provide a few surprises. This year’s match will be no exception, and NXT may see some big representation this year.

Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful Select that Blair Davenport, Tiffany Stratton, and Carmelo Hayes are present at the venue for tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble event. This is very interesting, especially considering how many unclaimed Royal Rumble match slots there are for this year’s show.

Fightful can confirm that Blair Davenport, Tiffany Stratton and Carmelo Hayes are all at the venue for tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble show.

It was later reported that Bron Breakker and Roxanne Perez are also at Tropicana Field. This could be a very NXT heavy Royal Rumble match.

WWE’s Royal Rumble Plans

There is no explicit information confirming Tiffany Stratton, Blair Davenport or Carmelo Hayes’ inclusion in the Rumble match itself. It also was not noted whether any of them appearing in the Royal Rumble match would mean that they are getting a main roster call-up.

WWE has brought NXT Superstars up in the past in a stand-by position, just in case they are needed. We will have to see if Hayes, Davenport, and Stratton are used. That being said, each of those performers are more than ready for the WWE main roster at this point.

Maven Recalls Paul London Getting In Trouble Over His Royal Rumble Spot

The Royal Rumble is a match that can make a star out of any performer even if they don’t win the match. It can, however, also land you in trouble for making others look bad if you’re not careful. According to Maven, Paul London found this out during the 2005 Royal Rumble.

The former WWE star discussed the upcoming PLE in the newest video on his YouTube channel. He explained the process of booking the battle royal and what wrestlers are told about their spots.

Answering a question about people getting in trouble over a Royal Rumble spot, Maven recalled Paul London getting some heat from the locker room for his elimination from the 2005 Rumble:

“Can you get in trouble during a Rumble? Actually you can. I will give you an example of that. Take the Paul London incident from 2005. I don’t remember what the run sheet looked like. I guarantee you it said something like ‘Paul London eliminated by Gene Snitsky.’

Paul, obviously wanting to have his Royal Rumble moment, made it the best elimination of the entire night. If you remember that spot you remember that crazy flip he took. Paul actually got some heat. He got in trouble once he got backstage.”

Paul London’s Royal Rumble Heat

Maven went on to explain that Paul London took the spotlight away from others and people in the back did not like this:

“Now why did he get in trouble? Because people thought he was showing up others in the match. When all he was doing was showing his athleticism and showing exactly how good of a bump he could take. Making Gene look pretty damn powerful in the process of it. That’s how you can get in trouble for even being eliminated during the Rumble.

So the takeaway from all of that is unless it says, and it might be something like this ‘Paul eliminated by Snitsky with big clothesline’ and they might go out of their way to highlight the word big to the point where they might even underline it, they want you to know that this is one of the biggest bumps, this is one of the biggest spots of the night. Paul’s mistake that night wasn’t taking the bump, Paul’s mistake wasn’t reading the run sheet wrong. Paul’s mistake was taking it upon himself to actually show how athletic he was.”

Slim Jim Resumes Partnership With WWE For Royal Rumble After Vince McMahon’s Resignation

The allegations against Vince McMahon were stomach-churning and read like a physiological horror story when combing through the pages of the lawsuit. This also led to Slim Jim pulling out their partnership with WWE, but now it appears that they are back after Vince McMahon resigned.

Slim Jim Is Back

We previously reported that Slim Jim pulled their sponsorship of the 2024 Royal Rumble match. This was in response to the earth-shattering allegations attached to the recent lawsuit that Janel Grant filed against Vince McMahon, WWE and John Laurinaitis.

Vince McMahon resigned from WWE after that. He is standing by his innocence, as he claims the allegations against him are fabricated, but the Chairman of the Board is no longer with the company he led for decades. That huge move was enough to bring Slim Jim back.

WrestleVotes is now reporting, on the morning of the 2024 Royal Rumble, that Slim Jim is back with WWE. They will be sponsoring WWE after all, and all it took was McMahon’s resignation.

After yesterday’s chaotic day, and the events that transpired, I am told Slim Jim is BACK as a main sponsor for tonight’s Royal Rumble PLE along with future WWE events.

Slim Jim’s Official Statement

Slim Jim released a statement on the matter after they re-entered the WWE fold. It was made very clear that Vince McMahon’s resignation was the catalyst for the return to their previous sponsorship arrangement.

“After the departure of Vince McMahon, and discussions with WWE TKO senior leadership, Slim Jim has decided to re-enter the Royal Rumble.”

WWE’s Connection with Slim Jim

The partnership between Slim Jim and WWE goes back decades. It’s impossible to encounter one of those meaty snacks in a supermarket without envisioning Randy Savage cutting a promo on protein snacks.

Currently, Bianca Belair and LA Knight are the faces of Slim Jim commercials. Thankfully, fans can enjoy a lot more of that partnership, because it seems that Vince quitting was all they needed to patch things up.

There May Be A Lot More To Unpack

Advertisers and sponsors pulling out can be a domino effect, and WWE wanted to stop the bleeding fast with this. Vince McMahon’s resignation was the only thing that could be done in this situation, but it was also more than warranted. Some have argued about the validity of the initial investigation over the hush money scandal that caused McMahon’s first retirement, because Janel Grant claims she was never questioned.

It was also made clear in the lawsuit from Grant that she is coming forward for those who cannot. The idea that there may be more with stories about Mr. McMahon is quite concerning.

‘Ms. Grant is filing this lawsuit not just to address her own suffering, but also to act for those who are afraid to speak out. Plaintiff Janel Grant is a former employee of WWE who was the victim of physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault and trafficking at WWE.’

We will keep our eye on this evolving story involving Vince McMahon and the damning lawsuit from Grant here at SE Scoops

SPOILER: WWE Discussing Major Debut For Royal Rumble Match

The 2024 Royal Rumble match is set to include a lot of surprises. The company only announced a few participants in each Royal Rumble match for a reason, and January 27th could be a big night for Jade Cargill.

Royal Rumble Spoiler Time

Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful Select that discussions about a significant WWE debut have emerged regarding the WWE Royal Rumble.

Jade Cargill was one of the names considered for the WWE Women’s Royal Rumble match. Despite being signed months ago, she has not made her debut in WWE thus far.
She was present at rehearsals for the Royal Rumble match on Thursday.

Fightful Select has learned that Jade Cargill was among the names discussed for the WWE Women’s Royal Rumble match. Cargill was signed months ago, but has yet to make her debut in WWE as of yet.

Exclusive Insight On Jade Cargill’s WWE Debut

I asked about Jade Cargill’s Royal Rumble status earlier this week. In response, I was told that WWE has a lot of things planned for Cargill. Although it was not confirmed to me that she will be in the Royal Rumble match, her presence at the rehearsals on Thursday certainly paints that picture.

WWE signed Jade Cargill, and made a statement as she showed up during the Fastlane kickoff show a short time later. Then she wasn’t seen at all, except for short cameos during RAW, SmackDown, and NXT. She was backstage for most of those brief interactions, never revealing her entrance music or seeing her actually take to the ring.

After Cargill’s debut for the company, I was told that there was “a ton of buzz about how professional Jade Cargill was backstage, how impressive she is up close, how well she fit in, and how quickly she did that.”

The 2024 Royal Rumble match may see Jade Cargill make her long-awaited in-ring debut for the company. The former TBS Champion could definitely shake things up in Tropicana Field.
