Superstars Got A Ride Down The Entrance Ramp At The Royal Rumble (Photos)

You may have noticed that the set at the Royal Rumble was pretty much Monday Night Raw’s set. You also may have noticed that the entrance ramp was insanely long and it took almost every Superstar in the Royal Rumble around 30 seconds to reach the ring. The cameras cut away from certain Superstars when they made their entrance and returned to them as they were entering the ring. This was because they were being driven to the ring in a golf cart down the absurdly long entrance ramp.

Discussion: Why Was Roman Reigns Even In The Royal Rumble?

Roman Reigns entered the Royal Rumble match last night at number thirty. There were rumors swirling around for weeks that there would be some big names showing up at this year’s Royal Rumble. Samoa Joe, Kenny Omega, Kurt Angle and Finn Balor were some of the names people were throwing around that might show up at the Royal Rumble. None of them did. That would be fine if Roman Reigns didn’t enter the match last night.

The crowd in San Antonio was ready to erupt for whomever came out an number thirty. They were hoping for a gigantic surprise and were ready to jump on their feet to celebrate. Everyone watching around the world on the WWE Network were ready to see who that last man was going to be. Who was going to go face to face with The Undertaker, Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt to determine who would be main eventing Wrestlemania. The buzzer hit, there was a second of silence and out came Roman freaking Reigns.

It has become a yearly tradition. The Royal Rumble inevitably falls apart and the WWE Universe collectively loses their minds. The stakes are massive at the Royal Rumble and it essentially signifies the direction the WWE is going in. When Roman Reigns came down to the ring, there was a collective thought of “holy sh** here we go again”. I was completely shocked that Reigns was in the Royal Rumble and I started to just root for anyone to win the match besides Roman Reigns.

Roman Reigns lost his match with Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship last night before the Royal Rumble match. It makes absolutely no sense for him to be apart of the match. If he was there, why didn’t AJ Styles get a spot in the match? All of these thoughts were going through my head that I barely had any time to comprehend that Roman Reigns actually eliminated The Undertaker.

Randy Orton eventually own the Royal Rumble and I was just ecstatic that Reigns didn’t win it. I couldn’t believe that the WWE was once again going to attempt to shove Roman Reigns on the WWE Universe. Randy Orton wasn’t even on my radar of Superstars that I wanted to see win the Royal Rumble. However, I was happy that he did because I have absolutely zero interest in Roman Reigns main eventing another Wrestlemania.

In my reaction article, I said that the Royal Rumble was great. It was until Roman Reigns showed up in the Royal Rumble match. Then I was just happy that Roman Reigns didn’t win. I still think last night’s show was very good. Kevin Owens and Reigns put on a very good Universal Championship match. AJ Styles and John Cena stole the show and put on a terrific WWE Championship match. However, the fact that Roman Reigns was even in the Royal Rumble has been bothering me more and more as time goes on.

I thought it was a given that if you are in a match for a major title, you are not in the Royal Rumble match on the same night. Apparently those things do not apply to Roman Reigns. At this point, none of this negative reaction is the fault of Roman Reigns. He is who he is. I’ve always thought he would be best served to just come down to the ring, say very little and kick ass. Instead, the WWE is seemingly determined to have Reigns be something that he is not. He is simply not “The Guy” in my opinion. The only reason I can come up with that Reigns was in the Royal Rumble match was that the WWE wanted to annoy people. If that was the goal, then mission accomplished.

Winner & Still Raw Women’s Champion: Charlotte

Reaction: Solid match to start off the show. I think these two can put on a better match and I’m guessing that we will see that in the near future. I think Charlotte should hold onto the Raw Women’s Championship at least until Wrestlemania.

No DQ Universal Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs Roman Reigns

Chris Jericho was locked in the shark cage above the ring for this match. Jericho and Owens attacked Reigns before the match started. Reigns fought back and laumched Jericho into the side of the cage and then threw him into the cage. Jericho freaked out in the cage and begged for it to not be raised above the ring. The match finally started as the cage was being raised and Kevin Owens attacked Reigns.

Reigns fought back and knocked Owens outside the ring. Reigns followed him and threw Owens over the barricade. Owens and Reigns fought through the crowd for the next couple of minutes. The action returned to the ringside area and Reigns was in control. Owens launched Reigns shoulder first into the steel steps. Owens dragged out a bunch of chairs from under the ring and attacked Reigns with one. Owens set up four chairs outside the ring. Reigns got back up but Owens hit him with a monitor and then connected with a Cannonball as Roman was up against the barricade.

Owens placed two more chairs on top of the four chairs he had already set up. Owens targeted the ribs of Reigns with a steel chair. Owens once again placed another chair on top of the six he had set up. Reigns fought back as the two were battling on the ring apron. Reigns went for a Suplex through the chairs but Owens blocked it. Back in the ring, Reigns planted Owens with two Clotheslines. The crowd booed as Reigns got pumped up. Reigns launched Owens shoulder first into the ring post.

Strowman Chokeslammed Reigns onto the German announce table and then hit the Running Powerslam on Reigns through the table in the ring. Kevin Owens then crawled onto Reigns and pinned him.

Winner & Still Universal Champion: Kevin Owens

Reaction: I wasn’t excited for this match at all and it turned out to be awesome. There were rumors of a Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman storyline occurring after the Royal Rumble but those rumors included the Universal Championship. Reigns can still win it before Wrestlemania but it seems he may be preoccupied with Strowman for a while.

Cruiserweight Championship Match: Rich Swann (c) vs Neville

Neville dominated the first several minutes of the match. The match was really slow and the crowd wasn’t too into it. Neville went out of the ring and Swann followed him. Neville launched Swann into the barricade a couple of times. Back in the ring, Neville went for a move off the top rope but Swann planted him with a Superkick. Swann followed it up with a Hurricanrana. Neville went outside the ring and Swann hit a big time Splash onto him. Swann and Neville got back into the ring before the referee could count to ten.

Swann controlled the next few minutes of the match. Swann went to the top turnbuckle but Neville shoved him and Swann fell to the top turnbuckle. Neville knocked him to the mat and then hit a Superkick. Swann connected with a kick of his own and went for a pinfall but Neville got his foot on the bottom rope. Neville connected with a Superplex for a two count but Neville immediately applied a Crossface for the submission victory.

Winner & New Cruiserweight Champion: Neville

Reaction: This match was alright but I was expecting much more. It makes sense for Neville to be the Cruiserweight Champion, he is pretty much the only member of the division that generates a response from the WWE Universe.

WWE Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs John Cena

Cena connected with a Clothesline on Styles to start off the match. Cena charged at Styles in the corner but AJ caught him with an elbow. AJ went for the Phenomenal Forearm but Cena caught him and hit an AA. Cena then rolled through and hit a second AA for the pinfall victory. John Cena has now tied Ric Flair with 16 World Championships.

Winner & New WWE Champion: John Cena

Reaction: What a match. There really is nothing more to say. People will obviously be pissed off that Cena won but hopefully that doesn’t take away from how good this match was. Hopefully these two meet again in the near future.

Ambrose hits a missile dropkick off the turnbuckle on Strowman, then Sami Zayn hits the Heluva Kick on him, then Baron Corbin clotheslines Strowman outside for the elimination. Randy Orton is out #23, and he hits Sami Zayn with an RKO out of nowhere. Orton and Wyatt start teaming up to work on the other competitors. Dolph Ziggler is out at #24 and he starts dropping people with superkicks. Luke Harper is out at #25 and he starts working on Crews and eliminates him. Harper and Orton lock eyes, and Wyatt gets between them. Harper drops Wyatt with a clothesline out of nowhere, then he drops Orton with a big boot. Lesnar gets up and Goldberg clotheslines him to the outside for the elimination. Goldberg starts dropping people with clotheslines, then hits Sami Zayn with a Jackhammer. First Look At Alamodome Being Set Up For The Rumble, Big E Argues With Wendy’s

WWE.com is running a poll asking fans which Superstar they most want to see step in the ring with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33. John Cena has 36% of the vote, followed by AJ Styles (28%) and Goldberg (14%). Despite the fact that Roman Reigns is The Undertaker’s rumored WrestleMania opponent, only 4% of fans voted for The Guy.

– Our friends over at WrestlingINC.com have obtained these photos of the Alamodome being set up for tomorrow night’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

– Big E and Wendy’s had an argument on Twitter. Wendy’s picked Titus O’Neil to win the Royal Rumble and Big E wasn’t a fan of that choice.

Who Should Win This Year’s Royal Rumble? (Discussion)

The Royal Rumble has been an event that has either ended in disaster or a collective groan for the past few years. In 2014, Batista returned and wound up winning the Royal Rumble match. The crowd booed relentlessly and this was because Daniel Bryan didn’t win. In fact, Daniel Bryan wasn’t even a part of the Royal Rumble match itself. The entire crowd booed the hell out of Rey Mysterio when he came out at number 30 and they booed even louder when Batista won the whole thing.

Things got even worse in 2015. Daniel Bryan won the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania, but had to relinquish the title due to injury. However, he had finally made his comeback and the fans wanted him to win the Royal Rumble match. Unfortunately, that was not the case as Daniel Bryan was eliminated very early by Bray Wyatt. The Philadelphia crowd completely turned on the event and booed the rest of the match. Roman Reigns took the worst of the crowd’s scorn as it became quite obvious that Reigns would wind up winning the match. The Rock even came down to the ring to help Reigns after the match but the crowd didn’t care. For the second year in a row, the Royal Rumble went off the air to a chorus of boos.

Then we get to last year’s Royal Rumble. The Authority was abusing their power and forced Roman Reigns to put his WWE Championship up for grabs in the Royal Rumble match. Triple H winning the match was completely predictable but the crowd mildly applauded anyway. The problem with that is that the WWE was hoping that the crowd would boo Triple H because he cost Roman Reigns the title. That didn’t happen and it ultimately led to a forgettable Wrestlemania match between Reigns and Triple H.

In 11 days, the 2017 Royal Rumble will take place. It is a star-packed event with names like The Undertaker, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar. There are also plenty of new stars in the match that could be taken to the next level if they emerge victorious. WWE Superstars like Braun Strowman and Baron Corbin would become household names if they were win the Royal Rumble match. There is no Daniel Bryan in this year’s Royal Rumble. There is not one Superstar that the WWE Universe collectively believes must win. Roman Reigns is fighting for the Universal Championship at the event, so he might not even be a part of the match.

Discussion: Would you rather see a big name like The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar or Goldberg win the Royal Rumble match this year? Or would you prefer to see someone that is on Raw or Smackdown every week win and headline Wrestlemania? Share your thoughts on who should win the Royal Rumble match in the comments below.

Jerry Lawler Calling The WWE Royal Rumble Main Event

It was announced on tonight’s WWE Talking Smack episode that Jerry Lawler will be calling the Royal Rumble 30 man main event with Michael Cole and Corey Graves later this month in San Antonio at The Alamodome.

Lawler returned to SmackDown last night and hosted a special King’s Court segment with Dolph Ziggler. As seen below, it didn’t go too well for the King.

Royal Rumble PPV Poster: Can You Spot AJ Styles?

On Tuesday WWE released the official promotional artwork for the 2017 Royal Rumble and a lot of fans are shaking their heads at the fact that you practically need a magnifying glass to spot WWE Champion AJ Styles.

Naturally, part-time mega stars like John Cena, The Undertaker, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar would be featured prominently, but Styles is a complete afterthought here, despite his big title defense against Cena.

Discussion: Do you think WWE dropped the ball with AJ Styles’ placement on this PPV poster?

The 2017 Royal Rumble pay-per-view takes place on Sunday, January 29th from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Discussion: What Did Goldberg’s Appearance On Raw Last Night Accomplish?

I’ve expressed my opinions on the Brock Lesnar and Goldberg match at Survivor Series before. To sum it up, I didn’t enjoy it. I thought it was done for shock value and that it made no sense for Goldberg, whom hasn’t been in a wrestling ring for over a decade, to dismantle Lesnar in 86 seconds. It was a snap judgement on my part. I found it cheap and was just done so that people would send out tweets about the match. Since Survivor Series, I’ve been proven wrong because the Goldberg and Lesnar storyline has continued and more weight has been put behind it. However, last night’s closing segment on Raw completely baffled me.

It was the debut of the Kevin Owens Show and his first guest was Goldberg. Owens and Jericho cracked jokes for a couple of minutes and Goldberg eventually joined them in the ring. Goldberg pretty much just said that he was going to win the Royal Rumble match and take the Universal Championship from either Kevin Owens or Roman Reigns. Paul Heyman then came out and said that Brock Lesnar was going to eliminate Goldberg at the Royal Rumble. Roman Reigns then emerged (without his United States Championship) and said that he was going defeat Kevin Owens at Royal Rumble and defeat whomever he has to face at Wrestlemania. Roman Reigns and Goldberg then had a stare down and Braun Strowman interrupted. Strowman stated that he was the one that was going to win the Royal Rumble match. The segment ended with Goldberg and Reigns hitting a Double Spear on Strowman. For some reason, everyone besides Goldberg then exited the ring and allowed him to celebrate in the ring.

I didn’t get it. The promo felt clunky and rushed. Chris Jericho also said that he was entering the Royal Rumble and Kevin Owens was upset about that. Owens was upset about that because he didn’t want to wind up having to defend his Universal Championship against his best friend, Chris Jericho, at Wrestlemania. There were just so many storylines and personalities crammed into that ten minute promo to close the show. Goldberg completely got lost in the shuffle and his presence didn’t feel special at all. I’m guessing that the WWE thought that the Double Spear with Reigns and Goldberg would be an epic moment but the crowd barely reacted.

Let’s breakdown Goldberg’s interactions to close last night’s Raw. Goldberg had a confrontation with Kevin Owens. Goldberg also threatened Chris Jericho when he announced that he was joining the Royal Rumble match. Goldberg then told Paul Heyman that he was going destroy Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble. Goldberg then had a stare down with Roman Reigns. Finally, Goldberg Speared Braun Strowman. My point is that there was just way too much going in that segment. Goldberg’s appearances are limited so they should feel special. There shouldn’t be multiple storylines all crammed into one segment that feature someone as established as Goldberg.

Finn Balor Talks About The Possibility Of Returning At The Royal Rumble

Former WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor recently spoke with ESPN about his recovery from shoulder surgery and when he expects to be back in action. Balor said he’s been wrestling full-time for 10 years and it’s unfortunate he got injured at SummerSlam. You can’t change the past and he’s keeping a positive attitude with his recovery. He plans to come back more well-roundd and focused than ever. “I’m excited about the Finn Balor that’s going to come back, as opposed to the Finn Balor that I left behind,” he said.

As for when he’ll be back in action, doctors have been telling him February is realistic. Right now, everything is on track for him to be a big part of WrestleMania season. That hasn’t stopped fans from speculating if he’ll be healthy in time to make a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble.

“You know, that’s obviously a huge rumor, and I would never be one to fuel the rumor mills,” he said with a smile, “But to be a surprise entrant in the Rumble would be a huge moment for me. I’m sure it would create quite a buzz,” he said. “But right now with the condition my shoulder is in, I’m not willing to risk sustaining any more long-term injury, just for the sake of two or three weeks. Since I got hurt, it was six months [out]. The target was to be back for WrestleMania. Everything’s on plan, everything’s on schedule.”

He added that if Vince McMahon approached him the day of the Rumble and asked if he has his gear, he’d be very tempted to get in the ring. However, he doesn’t want to risk it unless he’s 100% confident that his shoulder is healed.

Jim Ross Blog: HBK & Undertaker At The Royal Rumble, Sasha & Charlotte “Iron Man” Match

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQ.com. In this installment, JR spoke about Monday’s RAW, recent shakeups with WWE’s broadcast teams, the Royal Rumble and more.

One of the top stories of the week is the announcement that Charlotte & Sasha Banks will participate in WWE’s (main roster) first-ever 30-minute Women’s “Iron Man” match at Roadblock later this month. JR believes both women will have to step up in order for the match to be a success, but WWE is to be commended for their handling of women’s wrestling.

“The 30 minute Ironman, (why not Ironwomen BTW?) match will be a challenge to Sasha and Charlotte as it will require a logical pace, timely selling, a on going, under lying thread to their match I.E. someone has a dinged body part and it is exploited,” Ross said. “I applaud WWE and the two ladies for this booking and wish them the best of luck in telling a great story while continuing to advance their gender’s place within the ‘man’s world’ of pro wrestling.”

The 2017 Royal Rumble is shaping up to be one of the biggest ever with Brock Lesnar and Goldberg already confirmed as two of the 30 entrants. JR thinks WWE should utilize Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker at the Rumble to ensure the Alamo Dome show is a success.

“I like that both Lesnar and Goldberg are both in the Royal Rumble match as it should help move tickets locally for the Alamo Dome extravaganza. I’d love to see an official announcement that both HBK and Taker are going to be on hand in some role as to add to the marketable nostalgia for the event. The two legends do not need to wrestle but being creatively utilized in some manageable manner would help the event feel bigger and more desirable to attend.”

Speaking of the Royal Rumble, JR will be hosting a “RINGSIDE with Jim Ross” show the day of the Royal Rumble (2:30pm local time) at the Improv at River Center in San Antonio. If you’re in town for the Rumble, head over to Rivercitycomedyclub.com for ticket information.

Next NXT Takeover Announced, Ric Flair Backtage At RAW, Fans Iffy On Lesnar-Goldberg III

– 16-time World Champion and 2-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair is backstage in Charlotte, NC for tonight’s WWE RAW. His daughter Charlotte defends the RAW Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks on the show.

– WWE.com is running a poll asking fans if they want to see Brock Lesnar wrestle Goldberg again. Despite the attention coming out of their memorable encounter at Survivor Series, only 51% of fans say they want to see Lesnar vs. Goldberg III. The match is rumored to be one of the headliners of WrestleMania 33 in April.

– On Monday Triple H officially announced the next NXT Takeover special will take place on 1/28 from San Antonio, TX, the night before the Royal Rumble. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

Rob Van Dam Open To Another WWE Run, Royal Rumble Will Be 4 Hours

– The 2017 Royal Rumble PPV from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas will now be a 4-hour show. Ticket holders received an email last night announcing the earlier start time.

– During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog, former WWE Champion Rob Van Dam says he has an ‘open door’ to return to the company. “I have an open door with WWE as far as wrestling goes,” said Van Dam. “I also have an ongoing merchandise relationship. I hope that the right opportunity presents itself so that I will do another run with WWE. For me, the fans missing me and wanting to see me on TV is very important, but the business end of it also has to be right.

He also addressed a rumor from late 2015 that he turned down an offer to return. The angle would have involved him, Tommy Dreamer and the Dudley Boyz feuding with the Wyatt Family. Things didn’t come together, but RVD insists he did not “turn down” WWE’s offer. “I was super busy and it wasn’t a good time for me. Because of that, it would have taken more for it to be worth my while than it would have been for them, so we just didn’t do it.”

Jim Ross Says AJ Styles vs. Shawn Michaels Is A Long Shot, But Could Happen

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with some thoughts on a potential AJ Styles vs. Shawn Michaels dream match. It’s important to clarify that there are zero credible reports of this match actually happening or Michaels ever wrestling again.

With the 2017 Royal Rumble taking place from the Alamo Dome in Michaels’ home town of San Antonio and WWE looking to pack over 60,000 fans in the stadium – some fans have speculated that a Styles vs. Michaels dream match could help make the show a success. That said, time for the speculation. JR thinks the odds of this match happening are a “definite long shot,” but expressed optimism that anything could happen if WWE reached out to Michaels looking for help selling out the Rumble.

“The odds of Shawn Michaels wrestling at the Royal Rumble vs AJ Styles is a definite long shot as HBK has stressed to me on multiple occasions including the Ross Report podcast that he’s done with in ring activities in the wrestling biz. However, Shawn is a ‘company man’ and if WWE really needed a main event that could move a large amount of tickets in San Antonio at the Alamo Dome, I think that HBK would consider the company’s request. Without question, a Michaels vs Styles match in San Antonio at the Royal Rumble would be coveted by all involved if it were to occur. I’d realistically put the odds of this main event happening at less than 50-50 but I’d love to be wrong on this one.”

Styles himself recently commented on the hypothetical dream match. During an interview with Sports Illustrated, the WWE World Champion said he’d love to work with Michaels, but there’s no concrete evidence to get excited just yet.

“I’d love to learn from him, but who’s to say if that’s going to happen,” AJ explained. “Right now, it’s all speculation and rumors that I’m finding out like everyone else is, but man, what a match that would be.”

He also tweeted this fan-created image hyping the dream match:

I think it’s a smart idea to do this, it might help some people on the fence about traveling for it by them get everything in one package. WWE has a big task at hand trying to fill a 60,000 seat venue for a PPV that’s typically in an arena over half that size and not always pushed as an event on the level of Wrestlemania or even Summerslam.

Royal Rumble 2017 Coming To San Antonio’s Alamodome

WWE.com has confirmed that the WWE Royal Rumble will return to San Antonio’s Alamodome for the first time in 20 years in January.

The event will be held Jan. 29th, 2017. The last time the show came to that San Antonio venue, in 1997, a title bout between Shawn Michaels and Sycho Sid brought more than 60,000 fans into the Alamodome.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m ET /10 a.m CT. through Ticketmaster. WWE superstars expected to compete include: John Cena, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, A.J. Styles, Randy Orton and Kevin Owens

It should be interesting to see what kind of card WWE plans out with the intent on selling out the Alamodome. It should be noted that while the 1997 event drew 60,525 fans it was 48,014 paid fans and it was built around the hometown hero in the main event.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Location, Goldust Teasing Retirement?

– The 2017 Royal Rumble is scheduled to emanate from San Antonio, Texas, according to multiple sources. The joint-brand event will feature 15 Superstars from each brand battling for a right to face their brand’s champion in the main event of WrestleMania 33. An official announcement is coming probably next week.

– Goldust tweeted a cryptic message last night that seems to be hinting at retirement. The 47 year old veteran has had 5 stints with WWE and has been with the company since 2013. He’s a 3 time Intercontinental champion and a 3 time tag team champion.
