Daniel Bryan Thanks The Fans, Jim Ross Reacts To Royal Rumble Backlash & More

– WWE World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar flew home to Minnesota earlier today, so he won’t be at tonight’s in-studio episode of Monday Night RAW from WWE Headquarters.

– WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross made the following comments about Roman Reigns’ Royal Rumble win in his latest blog at JRsBarBQ.com:

“Roman Reigns is now in touchy situation and how he comes out of all this is going to be provocative to follow. The Rock had some of the same issues back in the day when he debuted as in the infamous :’Die Rocky Die’ chants and signs we used to see. Seen Reigns as a big star in the future and I’m curious to see it Sunday night’s experiences will help him in the long haul.”

“What if Reigns shockingly aligned himself with Paul Heyman and the two of them conspired to beat Lesnar at WM31? Stranger things have happened.”

– Daniel Bryan tweeted this message to his fans on Monday afternoon:

Update On Bubba Ray Dudley’s WWE Status

Following his surprise return to WWE at Sunday’s night’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, Bubba Ray Dudley spoke to WWE.com about the experience.

Bubba said he and his brother Devon have appeared in several Royal Rumbles, but this was the first time he went in there alone. He said it felt amazing to be back home for the first time in nearly 10 years. He clarified that back home doesn’t just mean wrestling in Philadelphia or the North East United States, but working for WWE. The former TNA Champion said flat out, “This is where I belong.”

At this time, his return at the Rumble was a one-time deal and he is not under contract with the promotion.

For those wondering, his ‘brother’ Devon was not backstage at the event, which is why R-Truth filled in for him with the Dudley Boyz double team moves.

Hey, I Guess There’s Always Next Year!

It happened again.

All the signs were there, yet somehow WWE didn’t see it coming.

At the WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view on Sunday night, the rabid, passionate fans in Philadelphia completely turned on what is generally a very popular, fun, 30-man annual match.

Things started off just fine. The momentum was great coming out of what was an excellent triple-threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship between Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Seth Rollins. Everything was in place. One left turn when WWE should have gone right, however, and everything could potentially fall apart.

WWE went left.

The match began like every other year. Out first comes The Miz, followed by R-Truth.

Whatever.

But then the countdown clock hit, the fans counted from ten to one and we had our first surprise of the night. Bubba Ray Dudley, the former “Bully Ray” in TNA Wrestling, was our first unexpected entrant of the match.

The fans were hot in Philly for their former ECW original. Dudley borrowed R-Truth for a few minutes, turning him into his own personal D-Von Dudley replacement, and the fun began.

“Wazzupp?!”

“Truth! …Get the tables!”

“3-D!”

The match was going along smoothly.

Dudley was eliminated a few minutes after popping up in WWE for the first time in ten years.

That was their first big mistake.

Seven entrants later — enter the leader of the “Yes! Movement.” Straight out of the gate it was clear — Philadelphia came to see Daniel Bryan win the match that he wasn’t even entered in last year.

It was going to be an ugly night.

Daniel Bryan was only in the match for a few minutes before being eliminated by Bray Wyatt. He was the eleventh Royal Rumble entrant to be eliminated this year. From there, the rest of the show completely fell apart.

WWE clearly had a game plan. Get Bryan’s elimination out of the way early, give the fans time to get the “boo’ing” out of their system, and then hopefully we’ll go along with our business.

Well, that didn’t exactly happen, did it?

What in the world did WWE expect to happen? Did they learn nothing from 2014?

Apparently not.

I’m assuming WWE was under the impression that once Bryan was out of the way, they would get behind Roman Reigns, and if they didn’t, when The Rock came out to endorse him and help him win, surely at that point the sheer excitement of seeing a big movie star for a few minutes would make them forget that they’re favorite wrestler had been screwed for the second year in a row.

Right?

Wrong!

Of course that wasn’t going to work. There were many other options WWE could have tried that would have saved the show from completely falling apart. For those who missed it, from the point Bryan was eliminated, throughout the rest of the entire match, except a couple of pops here and there, the rabid Philly fans boo’d the living crap out of everything that was happening.

Bryan was only cleared to return to the ring a few weeks ago. Knowing the Royal Rumble was coming up, if you’re not planning on having him win the match, why even have him return? Why not wait until after the Royal Rumble to bring him back?

Well, they had already brought him back, so that’s out. Knowing he’s back, however, why not save him for the final two? If you’re hell bent on having Reigns win the match, at least you have the fans turn on him at the very end of the match. They boo the finish. It sucks, but it’s better than 20-30 minutes of guttural boo’ing and madness.

Going forward, Roman Reigns is expected to be “the guy.” The next John Cena, if you will. If this is his launching off point, they better have their writers quickly figure out a way to turn him heel and capitalize on momentum that is already in place, because if they think that was a one time thing, they’ve got a rude awakening coming in their future.

Fans don’t forget. Reigns’ push had already peaked and started going down several weeks ago. His promo work isn’t there yet. His matches, while good, are not so good that fans will overlook the rest of the missing pieces of the puzzle. He’s simply not going to work as the top babyface superstar in the company. It’s not going to happen. Not yet, at least.

Regardless, another Royal Rumble is in the books. Another year of fans completely turning on WWE and crapping on their choice for a top guy, or a top match for WrestleMania, and they let it be known. Now, all that’s left is to wait and see if WWE smartens up and finds a way to give them what they want.

WrestleMania 31 — Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan.

Personally speaking, I don’t like the sound of that. Another triple-threat main event for the title? I’m not into it. But it’s pretty clear that the fans are choosing Daniel Bryan as their guy. Why WWE is so dead set on fighting it is completely beyond me.

But hey, I guess there’s always next year!

John Cena Responds To Royal Rumble Backlash

Top WWE Superstar John Cena has responded to the intense fan backlash to Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

With #CancelWWENetwork still trending on Twitter, Cena acknowledged that sometimes WWE comes up short giving fans what they want.

Backstage Reaction To The Royal Rumble Backlash

With WWE RAW just 9 hours away, Cena tweeted:

Some fans noted that Cena might be apologizing for coming up short in the WWE Championship match, but Cena saying “we” instead of “I” makes it pretty clear he’s referencing WWE, not himself.

Botched Spot During The Royal Rumble Match

As seen during the Royal Rumble match on Sunday night, Titus O’Neil was eliminated in just four seconds by Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose.

O’Neil’s role in this year’s Royal Rumble match was to be eliminated in just one second, tying Santino Marella’s record for the shortest reign in Royal Rumble history.

The blame for the missed spot is said to be shared, as many are calling it a timing issue, with Reigns and Ambrose being off with their double-clothesline and O’Neil being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Being eliminated in four seconds, O’Neil is now tied with Jerry Lawler (1997) and Bushwacker Luke (1991), who were also eliminated in four seconds. In 1995, Sir Mo and Owen Hart were both eliminated in three seconds, and in 1989, The Warlord was eliminated in two seconds.

Royal Rumble Backlash Getting Mainstream Media Coverage

Several mainstream media outlets have picked up on the unprecedented negative backlash to Sunday night’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

As of Monday morning, #CancelWWENetwork, #RoyalRumble and #Reigns are still trending on Twitter.

Time Magazine covered the story and dubbed it “the latest setback” for WWE since launching the Network after “failing to win over” its fan base.

– USA Today wrote, “Fans were outraged on Twitter, but the reaction inside the arena was even more extreme. Fans chanted Bryan’s name for minutes after he was eliminated, and booed every other entrant as they came to the ring (including fan favorite and eventual winner Roman Reigns.”

Fox Sports wrote that not even The Rock was able to offset the negative reaction to Reigns winning the Rumble after Bryan’s elimination. “For the rest of the Rumble, fans in the arena continued to chant Bryan’s name and boo every other combatant as he made his way to the ring. Of course, that story along with all the others will be continued as WWE plots its build for its signature event, WrestleMania.”

Major Royal Rumble Backlash, #CancelWWENetwork Top Worldwide Trend

WWE fans worldwide are enraged over Sunday night’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, specifically Roman Reigns standing tall when all was said and done.

The live crowd gave Reigns a thunderous rejection even before the match was over in a scene that rivaled last year’s Batista Rumble incident. The backlash is continuing online, with WWE fans canceling their WWE Network subscriptions en masse.

#CancelWWENetwork was the #1 worldwide trend on Twitter for a good period of time late Sunday evening and into Monday morning.

Many fans were tweeting screenshots of the cancellation page after they dumped the Network, with others saying the cancellation page crashed at one point. A poll on WWE’s Facebook page (vote here) with over 23,000 votes had 75% of fans giving the show Thumbs Down.

WWE promoted the premiere of a new show called “WWE 24,” which debuts on the WWE Network after tomorrow night’s post-Royal Rumble edition of WWE RAW. The show will give an unprecedented, all-access, documentary-style look at last year’s WrestleMania XXX.

Dean Ambrose Speaks On His Royal Rumble Preparation, Memories Of Philadelphia

WWE Superstar Dean Ambrose recently spoke to Philly.com to promote tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view, which takes place in “The City of Brotherly Love.”

Below are highlights from the interview..

On fond memories he has of Philadelphia, the site of tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view: “I was living in Philadelphia when I got signed by WWE. I was sitting there one afternoon, I just woke with a headache or something. I got a call from WWE that I thought was a prank, so I blew it off. Later in the day, I got more phone calls and I realized they were trying to hire me. It was completely out of the blue. I had figured if it was my career destiny to be an indie cult hero, then so be it.”

On his preparation for the lengthy Royal Rumble match: “I’ll take long, long runs and long bike rides. I’m always training for stamina, anyway, because I’m never going to be the biggest guy or the strongest guy. I train for endurance and agility. I’m not going to throw 27 people over the rope at one time, but I am prepared to be pounded on for 60 minutes or so.”

Check out the complete interview at Philly.com.

WWE ROYAL RUMBLE KICKOFF SHOW

The WWE Royal Rumble Kickoff Show begins with an elaborate video package. From there, we shoot live into the arena where Renee Young welcomes us to the Royal Rumble expert panel, which consists of she, Booker T, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves.

The panel members introduce themselves, banter back-and-forth and then we get to predictions. We’ve got people picking Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan. The fans erupt in the background with “Booker T! Booker T!” chants. Booker excuses himself and turns to the crowd to acknowledge them.

Backstage: The New Age Outlaws

We shoot to Tom Phillips in the “social media lounge” who talks about Twitter and Facebook and yadda yadda. From there, we go to a backstage interview with the New Age Outlaws. The Outlaws talk about their match against The Ascension tonight, make a bunch of jokes and plug the WWE Network.

Back to the expert panel, where Booker T organically squeezes in a plug for Anthony “Rumble” Johnson’s victory over Alexander Gustafsson at last night’s UFC On FOX 14 event in Sweden. They plug Booker T’s interview with Shawn Michaels, which is coming up next.

Booker T Interviews Shawn Michaels

Booker T talks to Shawn Michaels. They talk about Daniel Bryan and last year, before talking about his chances tonight, as he is in fact in the Royal Rumble match this year. They talk about a couple of the other competitors, and that’s about it.

We’re back to the expert panel where some loud, enthusiastic Howard Stern fans yell “Baba Booey” in the background while the panel talks about the road to WrestleMania. They plug the six-man tag-team match with The New Day vs. Cesaro, Tyson Kidd and Adam Rose, which is just moments away.

Big E. & Kofi Kingston (with Xavier Woods) vs. Cesaro & Tyson Kidd (with Adam Rose and The Rosebuds)

After a plug for “WWE 24: WrestleMania,” a new WWE Network original series that premieres after Monday’s RAW, we shoot live into the arena where we are introduced to tonight’s announce team, Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and JBL.

From there, The New Day music hits and out comes Big E., Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. They do their usual flashy entrance, with some microphone trouble along the way. Anyways, they’ve made their way to the ring and it’s time for our Kickoff Show match.

Following The New Day’s entrance, Cesaro’s theme hits and the fans in Philly explode with cheer. They are way into Cesaro here in the Wells Fargo Center tonight. Cesaro comes out, alongside Tyson Kidd, Adam Rose and the Rosebuds. We’re just seconds away from our first match of the evening.

The bell rings and here we go. “Ce-sar-o” chants break out, as Tyson Kidd and Big E. kick things off for their respective teams. The New Day guys are in control of the match early on. When Cesaro finally tags in, the crowd goes absolutely nuts. Philly really loves “The King of Swing” tonight. When The New Day guys get the better of Cesaro, the fans boo like crazy. When Cesaro gets offense in, they cheer like crazy. We head to a mid-match commercial.

We’re back from the break and we see The New Day still in complete control of the match. The fans in Philly are all over The New Day, chanting “New … Day …sucks! New ….Day …sucks!” The action is picking up now as Cesaro is fighting back, to the delight of the fans in the Wells Fargo Center. Cesaro hits a big superplex off the top, with Kidd following up with a springboard elbow drop from the apron on Kingston for a close near fall that the fans bought into.

The action continues, with bodies everywhere. Kidd goes for the Sharpshooter but Kingston pushes him off and sends him sailing through the ropes and out to the floor. Kidd rolls Kingston up. Cesaro tries pushing his foot into Kidd’s back to help, but the ref catches him. Kidd goes for the Sharpshooter again on Kingston and this time he gets it. The fans erupt as Kingston crawls to the ropes. Big E. makes the save and breaks it up. Cesaro knocks Big E. out of the ring and then Kingston knocks him out of the ring.

Kingston hits the Trouble In Paradise but ends up walking into an uppercut from Cesaro on the floor. This leads to him turning around into Kidd’s finisher. 1-2-3. Cesaro, Tyson Kidd and Adam Rose win. As it turns out, Adam Rose and Xavier Woods were never part of the match, both remained on the floor during the bout, likely due to Woods’ injury.

Winners: Cesaro & Tyson Kidd

WWE Royal Rumble Kickoff Show Resumes

After the match, we shoot back to the Royal Rumble expert panel. where the four do some final hype for tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Backstage: Tom Phillips Interviews Dolph Ziggler, Ryback & Erick Rowan

From there, we go backstage to Tom Phillips, who is with Dolph Ziggler, Ryback and Erick Rowan. Each guy talks about getting fired, getting re-hired and tonight’s 30-man Royal Rumble match. Rowan spoke as well, taking his sheep mask off and in rare form, actually talked a bit.

Back to the expert panel, the four preview the triple-threat main event between Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. An elaborate video package airs to tell the story leading into this match.

The Rock Is In The Building

More Spoiler Updates On Possible Surprises At The Royal Rumble

Last night, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appeared to tease an appearance at the Royal Rumble by posting a photo online of himself in Philadelphia. Of course, the event will be held tonight at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It was later reported by F4WOnline.com that Johnson is expected to appear at the event in some capacity.

According to MetsFan4Ever of Reddit.com, a former WWE employee who maintains contact with people in the organization, he was told in recent weeks that company officials have had serious discussions of Johnson making a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble Match and ultimately winning it. This would lead to Johnson facing Brock Lesnar in the main event at WrestleMania 31 in Santa Clara, California.

MetsFan4Ever was also told that if the deal falls through, Johnson was willing to at least make an appearance on the show. This could include putting Roman Reigns over in a backstage segment.

He also says that WWE officials have considered having Bray Wyatt win the Royal Rumble Match. Many people in WWE have high hopes for Wyatt and “feel the sky is the limit for him.”

MetsFan4Ever added there has been talks of Sheamus returning to WWE tonight in the Royal Rumble Match, but as of last night, he was at home in Florida.

– Paul Heyman posted the following on Twitter to hype tonight’s triple-threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship between Brock Lesnar, John Cena and Seth Rollins.
