Rob Van Dam Discusses Concussions, His New Documentary

Rob Van Dam is a busy man. With a documentary dropping on February 19, and ahead of his return to wrestling on an international platform, Rob Van Dam appeared on The Jim Ross Report and revealed the serious nature of his last concussion.

Headstrong Documentary

Van Dam says that the documentary was originally going to be about his on-again, off-again stand-up comedy tour, and his experiences on the road in a new medium.
All that changed, when as filming began, Van Dam began to experience double vision.

“I showed up for the beginning of the tour with symptoms still from a match I had a couple nights before,” said Van Dam. “I had gotten a bit of a concussion, and unlike the hundreds of other concussions that I’ve had, the symptoms didn’t go away right away.”

Rob said that he had no plans to take the film in a direction that would document his recovery from a concussion, but that’s exactly what ended up happening.

“I kept saying ‘I’ll be fine tomorrow, wake up and be 100 percent’, and we’ll just move on and forget about it. But after a couple days, I realized that wasn’t necessarily going to be what was happening,” Van Dam says.

“It became something much bigger than I anticipated. It became so big that the movie ends up following my concussion outside of the tour.”

That is not to say that the film ends up all doom and gloom, as Van Dam is quick to point out that the story takes an uplifting turn as he meets a host of wrestling veterans that appear in the documentary.

The film’s story also documents Van Dam’s very happy relationship with girlfriend Katie Forbes.

The documentary is called Headstrong, and it will be available on iTunes, Google Play, and VUDU platforms on Tuesday, February 19.

You can hear RVD’s discussion with JR below.

Rob Van Dam Shares His Thoughts On All Elite Wrestling

We’ve reported on wrestling veterans throwing in their thoughts and opinions on the forthcoming All Elite Wrestling (AEW), especially when it comes to potentially working with the startup company. One wrestler, however, has taken a more pragmatic approach in how he views AEW.

Sitting down for a discussion with the WINCLY podcast, Rob Van Dam divulged his thoughts on AEW and spoke about what his future in the wrestling industry might look like.

When asked if there was a certain promotion he would like to associate with, RVD admitted that there’s not — at least at this point in time. He admitted that, for him, “Money talks.”

His goal at this juncture of his career is simple: work less and make more money.

“I’m really looking to do less and less — travel less,” he confessed. “I consider myself semi-retired. At the same time, I stay ready, so I don’t have to get ready.”

Asked if he saw any similarities between AEW and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), RVD replied that he doesn’t see the comparison. He recalled ECW being a “gradual thing” and not something that made an impact “out of nowhere like this seems to be.” These comments are reminiscent of Kevin Nash’s thoughts, where he shared that AEW should “grow slow.”

“These Guys Don’t EVen Have A TV Deal Yet”

Other wrestlers have excitedly predicted a modern Monday Night Wars on the horizon between AEW and WWE. RVD doesn’t think so, saying, “As far as the Monday Night Wars goes, c’mon, these guys don’t even have a TV deal yet. I wish them all the luck in the world — I hope they do well.”

“They [AEW] have to prove history wrong that they are different and that they’re gonna stick around. People who have a whole lot of money usually don’t waste a lot of money. That’s why they have money. I’m not saying that they are wasteful but if things aren’t set up right and they’re paying guys the rumored reports, then they’ve got to make the money back and I hope they do.”

Despite all the hype and excitement, however, RVD still believes WWE will stand tall, claiming that he doesn’t see WWE getting “knocked out of its first place position.” He did add a caveat though: “[…] history is what it is and I’m all about breaking tradition.”

The Lucha Bros vs RVD & Sabu – United We Stand – April 4th, 2019

“Rob Van Dam and Sabu will face Pentagon Jr. and Fenix in a must see dream match!” an Impact press release for the match reads. “An instant classic if there ever was one! RVD and Sabu return to IMPACT Wrestling. We can’t wait for this tag team clash.”

The show starts at 11 PM from the Rahway Recreation Center in Rahway, New Jersey.

Last month, Impact Wrestling and Major League Wrestling announced they would work together to stagger their shows so fans would be able to attend both:

“Due to the New York curfew preventing us from starting at 11:00 p.m. ET, we have moved our live event to New Jersey,” stated Impact’s Scott D’Amore.

“We want to thank our partners at WrestlePro for facilitating this collaboration on April 4th and also thank House of Glory and stress that we couldn’t make this happen for our great fans without their cooperation.”

Bruce Prichard Reveals The Storyline That Made Him An RVD Fan

Former WWE official Bruce Prichard recently dedicated an episode of his podcast, Something To Wrestle, to overlooking the WWE career of former WWE Champion Rob Van Dam. Prichard first discussed that RVD made his WWE TV debut back in 1987 as a fan:

“Rob told me, when I first met him. He said, “You know I was one of those people that came out of the audience and did one of Ted Dibiase’s ‘Will you do this for money’ deal,” Prichard explained.

“He actually did the ‘Kiss My Feet’ thing with Ted Dibiase where he got paid to kiss his feet. We actually went back and found the footage and it was Rob Szatkowski, so I thought that was really cool. He was a mega fan.”

Prichard also revealed that after seeing Van Dam get his start in WCW he seriously considered bringing him in to WWE:

“The first time I saw Rob Van Dam was actually with Dory Funk Jr, long before he was in ECW. Right about the time he was going to WCW. Rob Van Dam does the ‘Van Dam Deadlift’ where he takes two chairs and does the splits and then he lifts a barbell in between,” Prichard said.

“Extremely difficult to do and extremely impressive when someone does it. He had a unique look and had a different style, so watching Rob from day one thought that he was special and thought someone that can come to WWE and have a big niche following.”

RVD got his start with WWE in 2001 as a member of the Invasion storyline. Prichard said that he became a fan of RVD’s during this storyline when he saw his interactions with WWE Hall Of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin – as he believes the ECW legend has great chemistry with the Texan:

“The Alliance stuff with Steve Austin and Rob Van Dam, to me, that was where I fell in love with RVD because I really didn’t know him that well, except superficially, but when we were doing stuff with Steve Austin and Steve was doing stuff with his watch and doing the ‘What?’ chant and looking at his watch, we’re shooting and I am telling Rob to act natural, react and just go with it because I wasn’t a big fan of scripts, so I would let the guys freestyle at times, and if it would work we would go with it,” Prichard said.

“So, Steve is putting his watch in his ear and RVD takes the watch and puts the watch up to his ear asking what it is he was listening to. It was real, and it was something that everybody wanted to do but they’re looking for a script, but I told Rob to just freestyle with it and it was good.

“Steve and Rob had a chemistry in the backstage vignettes where we thought that there may be something there. It was just good chemistry.”

WWE To Hold Tryout In Saudi Arabia, Rare AJ Styles vs. RVD Match Released (Video)

WWE Holding Tryout In Saudi Arabia

The WWE is set to head to Saudi Arabia later this month for the Greatest Royal Rumble event. One of the featured matches on the card is a 50-Man Royal Rumble match, the largest in WWE history.

Huge names like The Undertaker, Chris Jericho, John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Roman Reigns are scheduled to appear. WWE has also now announced that they will be holding tryouts while in Saudi Arabia as well:

WWE to hold tryout in Saudi Arabia this week

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA and STAMFORD, Conn. — WWE is in Saudi Arabia this week in search of the next generation of WWE Superstars with a four-day talent tryout in Jeddah beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, April 18, through Saturday, April 21.

The tryout, which will be hosted at the King Abdullah Sports City Sports Hall, will give more than 25 athletes from Saudi Arabia the opportunity to showcase their abilities with the goal of being selected to begin training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Fla. The talent pool will be comprised of elite performers with a diverse background in sports, including soccer, powerlifting, volleyball, boxing, jiujitsu, gymnastics, CrossFit and taekwondo.

The world-class tryout is part of WWE’s commitment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, highlighted by the Greatest Royal Rumble event on Friday, April 27. General Sports Authority of Saudi Arabia Chairman, His Excellency Turki Al Sheikh, WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia invite the world to celebrate this signature event. It is the first event as part of a long-term partnership between WWE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Greatest Royal Rumble card includes the first-ever 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match; John Cena vs. Triple H; The Undertaker vs. Rusev in a Casket Match; Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns in a Universal Championship Steel Cage Match; an Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match featuring champion Seth Rollins vs. The Miz vs. Samoa Joe vs. Finn Bálor; United States Champion Jeff Hardy vs. Jinder Mahal with Sunil Singh; a Raw Tag Team Championship Match between “Woken” Matt Hardy & Bray Wyatt and Sheamus & Cesaro; and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The Usos, as well as a WWE Championship Match and a Cruiserweight Championship Match.

“WWE is dedicated to recruiting the most talented athletes and entertainers from around the world and developing them into global Superstars,” said Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Executive Vice President, Talent, Live Events & Creative. “In partnership with the General Sports Authority, we look forward to bringing the Greatest Royal Rumble to Saudi Arabia while showcasing this historic event to the world.”

The Jeddah tryout is the latest example of WWE’s global talent recruiting efforts. In recent years, WWE has scouted rugby and soccer players from Europe, kabaddi and kushti athletes from India, and martial artists and boxers from China. In 2017, WWE held a tryout in Dubai, which resulted in the first Arab woman, the first Indian woman and the first Kuwaiti man to sign with WWE.

Rare AJ Styles vs. RVD Match (Video)

Title Match Wrestling has recently released a video of a match between current WWE Champion AJ Styles and former WWE star Rob Van Dam (RVD) from Pro Wrestling Syndicate’s “Frightmare Before Christmas” event in 2014.

The special guest referee for the match was Jerry Lynn, and Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson also make appearances. You can watch below:

Rob Van Dam’s Concussion History Preventing WWE Return

Documents obtained through Rob Van Dam’s divorce proceedings have revealed the 47-year-old is unable to return to WWE. According to documents filed by his lawyers, RVD suffered permanent vision loss due to a concussion suffered last November for PCW in California.

This vision loss and history of concussions, his lawyer contends, will prevent him from ever competing inside a WWE ring again.

Rob Van Dam’s Divorce

RVD is going through divorce proceedings with his ex-wife, Sonia. The two had been married from 1998-2015. The purpose of RVD’s filings was to show his income level has been “substantially reduced” since the time he and Sonia were married. The filings also report that RVD’s merchandise contract with WWE ran out in July.

Since 2016, RVD has been linked to independent wrestler, Katie Forbes.

Rob Van Dam Comments On Plans For WWE Return, Possibly Retiring Soon

Part-time WWE performer Rob Van Dam took part in a Q&A at the Mid-Atlantic Legends Fanfest in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday and confirmed the fact that he is in between WWE contracts right now.

Van Dam noted that going to TNA or ROH right now would breach his WWE agreement. He said he does have a valid merchandise deal with WWE and intends to return, however he noted that he is not currently in a big rush to get back.

RVD also mentioned the possibility of doing a “retirement tour,” but noted that it’s not something that’s officially planned at the moment. He added that he will wrestle until an undisclosed time, noting he has an age in mind where he will stop, which he claims “isn’t too far off.”

Possible *Spoiler* On Former TNA Champion Returning As Special Referee Tonight

As reported earlier today, TNA will be taping several weeks worth of Impact Wrestling episodes across the next four days, starting with tonight’s show, which airs semi-live on a two-hour delay from Orlando, Florida.

In the main event of tonight’s show, the TNA World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line with Kurt Angle defending the title against Eric Young with a former TNA Champion returning to serve as special guest referee of the match.

Unless the former champion is a swerve of some kind, the following are the most likely candidates, according to a report from F4WOnline.com:

– Sting (highly unlikely due to his WWE deal)
– Samoa Joe (possible, but unlikely due to his rumored negotiations with WWE)
– Mick Foley (also seems unlikely now that he just recently taped a highly-promoted special for the WWE Network)
– A.J. Styles (would seem unlikely due to his various commitments, including Ring Of Honor starting next Tuesday)
– Chris Sabin (a possibility)
– Rob Van Dam (a possibility)
– Bully Ray (a very strong possibility)

– Also confirmed for tonight’s Impact Wrestling is a Ken Anderson vs. Ethan Carter III match where the fans get to choose the stipulation (likely an arm-wrestling match or a falls count anywhere match), and Divas action with Gail Kim & Awesome Kong vs. Taryn Terrell & Jade & Marti Bell.

RVD Says He’s In No Hurry To Return To WWE, Talks About The Current Product & More

Rob Van Dam recently spoke with the WNS Podcast and revealed why he is in no hurry to go back to WWE. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On his thoughts on his last WWE run: “I had some good matches because all the wrestlers up there are really good and I had some matches that I enjoyed with Seth (Rollins) and Cesaro. But, overall, it was nothing like the run the year before. 2013, I came back after many years off WWE television. They promoted it strong. Like maybe stronger than anybody’s return before with the video packages of RVD coming back. When I came back, I delivered. Money In The Bank match in Philadelphia, that was awesome. That whole run I had a good time in 2013. In 2014, it was like they had nothing for me. No big intros, the writers seemed to not notice I was there. Like my music hit the day after Wrestlemania and I kinda just walked out like I had always been there. It was good but I don’t think there was a lot of utilization put on RVD. That’s really the big reason I’m not in a hurry to go back.”

On the current product: “I actually don’t [watch]. Even when I’m on it unless I’m there watching in catering while the show’s going on live otherwise I don’t keep up with it. I certainly get a lot of feedback from fans because they’re everywhere. And everybody wants to tell me whether they’re happy or disappointed in what the wrestling product is. But you know it’s an art form. And the fans, it’s their job to receive that art expression and that’s the way it goes. The fans don’t dictate…i thinka lot of the judgment is okay for conversation when they’re amongst themselves. But, as a wrestler, I think that when the fans really think that they know what would be better of they were in Vince’s position. They think they could run a global billion dollar company then I tend to think fan talks would probably be more enjoyed among themselves.”

On his thoughts of working part-time instead of full-time: “I think it’s all about balance. First off, it is the kind of business that if you get into it you have to sleep, breathe and eat wrestling. You have to compete with all these other up and comers that want it so bad more than anything else in their lives. And anywhere in the world if you’re talking about trying to make it to the level of being a superstar and you’re fighting against those odds you pretty much, to, have to have that determination to make it. So, guys like myself and probably Chris Jericho. But I can speak for myself personally and whole heartedly and tell you that it’s true for me. I don’t want it nearly as bad as those guys do. However, I have over 25 years of experience that you can’t replace.with skill, natural gifts or talent. That’s something you only get with enough time so we have that. We jave a lot to offer. Plus, I’m a legend. I’ve impacted peoples’ lives in such a way that they’ll never forget. I get that because I was a fan and because I watched wrestling as a kid. Even if I hadn’t seen “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Even if I hadn’t seen them in the last 25-30 years I’d still recog ized them if they walked into the room. That’s the way you ompact someone’s lives when you’re on their TV set in their living room week after week. Especially for a certain growth period in their life, that’s the lind of superstar vibration you can’t buy, you can’t get that anywhere else. So, you have to utilize that. Guys like that to draw and fans want to zee that. The you g guys that come up, they can be good, they can be talented, they can get the fans’ attention so they want to keep n eye on them. But, they can’t be legends or superstars without really putting in the time. It’s a balance and again the fans that theink they know it best, they look at it either way. The vetrans aren’t putting the young guys over, they think, or the young guys are squashing the superstars. No matter what you do, they’re going to pipe up and complain about it. But, when it comes to that, that’t the way it is. Like last time i don’t think any of the young guys had to worry about playing second fiddle to RVD.”

On his favorite opponent that brought the best out of him: “Throughout my whole career that’s goong to be Jerry Lynn. When I first wrestled him in ECW I could have bowled right over him and I could have been yesterday’s challenger. But, I thought there was something special about him. And so the cirst time I wrestled him we went 25 minutes and by the end pf the match my hair was pulled out all over the place, I had a bloody nose, my outfit was ripped, we had splinters we we were pulling out of our ass and when I finally beat him I felt like I had earned that victory and that for me was something I enjoyed about that time period in ECW being the whole F’N Show I had enough control to do my part to do what I could to mae sure that anyone that bought a ticket to come to see me got their money’s worth. Later in lofe that’s take. Away because what can you reLly do when you’re only out there for 2 minutes. And that’s going to include two ring entrances, a run in and a finisher. At that point you can’t be the Whole F’N show every night so that’s where some of the compromising was happening. Jerry Lynn and also Sabu because he’s so like minded. When we have a match we both have similar ideas what would make it a killer match. So that’s what’s important.”

On the differences between fans of different organizations: “Yes. Absolutely. ECW fans were original. They were part of the show. They were a bigpart of the show and other fans in other towns in other countries would imitate the fans that were on ECW television. Now with WWE there’s a mixture because it’s such a big crowd. You have the Middle America crowd that they target. It’s children and families and it’s family entertainment. The hardcore fans also go to those shows so you’re going to feel their energy too. But the wide majority of that vibration and energy from the crowd is more a family fin kind of thing. Now the fans in TNA that would come out to Universal Studios when I was there were shuttled in from the park where they were riding roller oasters and got to go to a free show. Then there were other fans that were there to support the product, that believed in the product and really wanted to see TNA move ahead. But at the same time, those fans wanted to do their part to help the company move ahead.”

On the atmosphere during One Night Stand 2006: “I think everybody watching that could feel the atmosphere watching that. The fans were screaming and there’s always been this feud between Philly and New York. And they would argue about whoch fans were the better ECW fans and we would travel back and forth and they both wanted us to consider them a home. The Manhattan Ballroom was the perfect environment to capture that energy that had fans pouring over top of us. Just the fact that those fans that night were 100% behind me and my passion and my vision which brought that night to fruition because it was me alone that said hey let’s have a PPV that’s ECW.”

On his thoughts on his time in TNA: “When I first got there they were trying to do Monday nights up against Raw and I thought that sounded exciting. I didn’t know much about them but they were trying to hire some former WWE guys. During my time there, they were still trying to do the right thing. Moving nights and moving out of the studios and doing TV on the road. But at that time, that was the same week I had left them after doing 3 years with them. It was cool. It was an easy gig. I would work for two days and then I would have two weeks off. So that was the easiest gig of my career until they started adding more house shows. More events. I had a cap on how many shows I would do in a year. So, when they would use up all my dates then they’d injure me and I’d be off for a couple months. There were some times they were doing things right, other times not so right. When they turned Jeff Hardy into a heel I thought that was the stupidest thing ever. It was hard to take alot of what they were doing seriously. I was there for them trying to do my part to help spread the word do what I could do help draw attention to TNA. When they moved to Destination America I wasn’t surprised. I was always hearing their deal with Spike was over. While I was there, I was always hearing TNA’s gonna fold and they’ve still been going strong against all these rumours so I’m not going to rule them out. As long as there’s a reason to believe they’ll be around, I think they can do it. Destination America’s a new channel. Nobody knows about it so their viewership went way down and plummeted. But hopefully that’s just temporary growth pain. In the meantime, I don’t think any ody’s touching WWE’s position as number 1. I think it is a good year for independant to step up.”

On other ventures outside of wrestling: “I was just contacted. I don’t remember how the original conversation took place. The guy that was handling the production I’ve known him through previous projects and worked with him in the past. It was just fun. I hate doing auditions. I grew up on video games but I don’t play any. I’m not reading any comic books but my favourite comic growing up has always been Ghost Rider. My book is Twisted Perception a graphic novel that I wrote.”

On what’s on the horizon for him: “There’s a lot in the writing world. It’s very important to me I get my autobiography out before I die and someone else writes it and screws up my life. But I have other writing projects I’m still working on but in the future I see myself using my brain more and my body less.”
