Kevin Owens: A Lot Of Sami & My’s WWE Tag Title Reign Went Under the Radar

Kevin Owens was thrilled to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles with Sami Zayn last year, though feels more could’ve been done with their reign.

The pair captured the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships in the main event of WrestleMania 39: Saturday in April of last year. The emotional climax of Zayn’s story with the Bloodline saw the pair end the record-breaking reign of The Usos.

Kevin Owens On His WWE Tag Team Title Reign

The pair held the titles until Payback 2023 where they would lose the gold to Damian Priest and Finn Balor of the Judgment Day. Speaking with Mail Sport, Owens reflected on his title reign and felt much went under the radar due to being kept off of Premium Live Events.

“Me and Sami worked our asses off to give main events on RAW every week that had people going wild and we succeeded, and I’m not one to toot my own horn, I really am not, but I think Sami and I did a lot of special things as champions that went under the radar because they weren’t on pay-per-views. They weren’t under the big bright lights. They were usually on RAW.”

Sami & Kevin’s Tag Title Reign

It’s not hard to see why Owens believes a lot of the title reign wasn’t given a spotlight. As champions, the pair were granted just one successful title defense, which came at WWE Night of Champions 2023. The pair held the gold for 154 days but is recognized by WWE as lasting 160 days.

What Came Next?

Following their loss, Owens would be moved to SmackDown and would quickly enter a feud with Logan Paul. Paul got a controversial win over Owens at the 2024 Royal Rumble PLE after the Prizefighter used brass knuckles introduced by Paul. Owens also worked the match with a legitimate injury. At the WWE Elimination Chamber 2024 event, both men competed in the Men’s Chamber match won by Drew McIntyre

Sami Zayn: People Talk About the Good Ol’ Days. They’re Right Here, Right Now!

The WWE Universe is living in the best of times right here and now, according to an impassioned Sami Zayn who spoke after this week’s SmackDown.

This week’s SmackDown saw plenty of excitement, including the return of The Rock, who confronted his cousin Roman Reigns. This staredown closed the show after Cody Rhodes said he was coming for the Tribal Chief, but not at WrestleMania 40.

The Good Ol’ Days Are Right Now

After competing in a dark match following SmackDown, Sami Zayn spoke to the crowd in Birmingham, Alabama. The former NXT, Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion stated that those who reminisce about the ‘good ol’ days’ should stop and see how good things are right now.

“It’s awesome to have The Rock. We’re lucky to have him. But you know, The Rock is lucky to have the WWE, too. Because we are living in the best time with the best superstars in the WWE.

“We have constantly listened to people talk about the good ol’ days. The good ol’ days. The good ol’ days. Well I’ve got news for you. Tonight, 10,000 people sold out this building in Birmingham! To see the best crop of performers in the world so I have news for you and for everybody! The good ol’ days are right here, right now!

“And I want to thank you for letting me be a part of it, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you for being a part of it with us. Thank you so much, we are all feeling something special right now! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love you, thank you very much.

Zayn’s promo and match wasn’t the only highlight after SmackDown went off the air…

Sami Zayn Confesses He’s Going Through A Difficult Time As He Wraps Up 2023

WWE put fans through a wild ride in 2023, but it has been even more strenuous for the Superstars involved. As we wrap up the year, Sami Zayn has a special word he would like to share with those who stood behind him through it all.

Sami Zayn’s Rise In WWE

Sami Zayn entered WWE’s main roster landscape as a former NXT Champion, but it took a while to really get momentum going for him. Some would argue that 2022 was his breakout year, with a Bloodline story taking over the WWE Universe’s fascination.

Sami Zayn continued through 2023, and picked up the Undisputed Tag Team Titles alongside Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 39, as they beat The Usos. It’s been quite an experience for the Underdog from the Underground, and the year is almost over.

This life has been too good to me. My career has been so unbelievable, every show is a gift. Thank you all, just know I am very happy to be there with you guys.

Sami Zayn’s Injury May Be A Legit Situation

Sami Zayn has given his all to advance his career in pro wrestling. Now, he is out of action for a while, but he requested that time off. That being said, his injury may be legit.

WWE will be missing Sami Zayn due to an injury sustained in a brutal attack by Drew McIntyre. The incident occurred during the December 4th episode of WWE RAW, leading to an injury for Sami Zayn, one that many believed was kayfabe.

This information was disclosed on commentary during the December 11th episode of WWE RAW, revealing that Sami Zayn is dealing with a “partially torn meniscus.”

What’s going on with Sami Zayn?

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Sami Zayn’s partially torn meniscus injury may be legit. He also noted once again that Zayn requested this time off.

A partially torn meniscus isn’t a terribly bad injury. Healing could take between four and eight weeks. However, the time depends on the severity and position of the tear. Of course, a WWE Superstar like Sami Zayn may need to take a bit more time.

We will have to see if Sami Zayn can make a return by January 27th’s Royal Rumble event. At this point, anything seems to be on the table. He certainly has some payback coming for Drew McIntyre.

We will have coverage of WWE, and Sami Zayn’s eventual return, right here at SE Scoops. Keep checking back for more updates as they are made known.

Sami Zayn’s Injury Status Confirmed During 12/11 RAW

WWE is going to have to go without Sami Zayn for the time being. The former NXT Champion is out of action after a brutal attack from Drew McIntyre. Now we know what his injury is.

Sami Zayn took a beat down from Drew McIntyre during the December 4th episode of WWE RAW. That resulted in an injury in storyline, and they broke that news during RAW this week.

They revealed on commentary during the December 11th episode of WWE RAW that Sami Zayn suffered a “partially torn meniscus.

What’s next for Sami Zayn?

As we previously reported, Sami Zayn requested time off from WWE. It isn’t known exactly how long he will be out of action, but they are selling this as a legit injury on RAW.

Sami Zayn will likely be back in due time, and with a fresh outlook after a bit of rest. His injury is not legit as far as we can tell, but he certainly deserves the time off.

We will continue covering this story, right here at SE Scoops. Sami Zayn may be back in time for the Royal Rumble on January 27th, which would be a nice break for the Underdog from the Underground.

Sami Zayn Has Been Granted Time Off From WWE

WWE is making plans for the remainder of 2023, but they might not write anything for Sami Zayn at this point. The Underdog from the Underground may be getting a little break from the company.

Sami Zayn’s ascent in WWE was notable, and he remains one of the top Superstars on the red brand. After the December 4th episode of WWE RAW, he might be missing from the red brand for a stretch of time.

In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that Zayn recently asked management for time off and that request was granted.

“It looked like they were doing an injury angle with McIntyre and Zayn when McIntyre stomped on Zayn’s bad knee. I don’t have it confirmed Zayn will be off for a while due to that, but do know that he had asked for time off recently and was granted it, but wasn’t told when that would begin…

He was not scheduled for 12/28 show in Laval, Quebec that would normally be built around him, as that was during the scheduled break, although it is possible they could have him do that show.”

Sami Zayn may get a little break from WWE as they kick off a new year. That will also mean that WWE will have to go without him as well. Sami Zayn’s profile as a WWE Superstar was certainly elevated over the last year, so they will lose a considerable amount of star power with his hiatus.

WWE also used that beatdown angle during the December 4th episode of WWE RAW to further Drew McIntyre’s storyline as a heel. He has a real mean streak going now, and it appears that took Sami Zayn out of action. Drew McIntyre’s contract situation is also an interesting discussion point.

Sami Zayn could get a break from WWE and still make his return to WWE by January 27th’s Royal Rumble premium live event. As it stands right now, he may get a little break from the road.

Two ‘Lost’ El Generico (Sami Zayn) Matches from Impact Have Surfaced

El Generico was a huge fixture of the indie scene for years. Around 2012, he reportedly went to Mexico where he may or may not have been killed by the cartels. There’s allegedly an orphanage named after him.

There are reports that WWE’s Sami Zayn was close to El Generico. While the masked man spent many years in Ring of Honor before going to Mexico, he did take his talents to IMPACT Wrestling shortly before his alleged death.

“Lost” El Generico Matches

El Generico

On their latest episode, DEADLOCK Podcast host, Johnny, called on IMPACT Wrestling to release the unaired matches.

Back in 2011, the “late” wrestler had tryout matches with what was then TNA Wrestling. In the first match, he lost to Amazing Red. The next day, he won a match against TJP.

IMPACT Wrestling tweeted that “two never before seen El Generico matches from 2011 against Amazing Red and TJP are available now for the first time ever on IMPACT Plus!”

Sami Zayn Set for Bloodline Match on WWE Monday Night Raw

Sami Zayn’s issues with the Bloodline are far from over, as the Honorary Uce will be stepping in the ring with a former ally tomorrow night.

Zayn’s near-year-long storyline with the group has been praised by fans as some of the best storytelling in wrestling they’ve seen in years.

At the 2023 Royal Rumble, Zayn’s time as the Honorary Uce ended when he refused to attack Roman Reigns and instead struck Kevin Owens.

Monday Night Raw

At WWE Elimination Chamber, Zayn attempted to dethrone Reigns as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion but came up short in his native Montreal.

During last week’s SmackDown, Solo Sikoa defeated Sami Zayn, but the post-match beatdown did not go as planned.

When Jimmy Uso said he’d do the running hip attack, Zayn was able to fend off both men, infuriating Reigns backstage.

On tomorrow’s Raw, Uso will be under pressure to make things right when he faces Zayn one-on-one.

The Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champion has certainly been feeling the heat as of late, after being unable to coax his brother Jey back to the Bloodline.

Future Plans

Jimmy Uso and Sami Zayn will face off next week, and it may not be long before they share the ring again.

It has been reported that the WrestleMania 39 plan is for the Usos to defend their Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships against Zayn and Kevin Owens.

As to how WWE will get to this match remains to be seen, as The Usos are evidently not on the same page, and Owens has refused to join Sami’s side.

There have been rumors that this match could headline Night One of WrestleMania, given the popularity of Zayn and this angle.

Paul Heyman: “I Can Guarantee You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Sami Zayn”

The case of Sami Zayn and The Bloodline is a curious one. The former NXT champion wasn’t even considered a main event talent by many fans up until a year ago. However, he has turned haters into supporters with his performance in the past year. Many believe that he should have beaten Roman Reigns at the Elimination Chamber PPV. Though Paul Heyman is promising that Sami’s story is not finished despite the loss.

The special counsel recently appeared on the SI Media podcast. He was asked if there was ever any inkling to change the WrestleMania plans for Reigns due to Zayn’s rise to popularity. The former ECW owner claimed that it’s always a possibility:

“There’s always an inkling to change any plan because the old expression is you have a test audience every night and we’re very adaptable. We think we have a really good formula here. We think we have a really good path. I don’t think you’ve seen the last of Sami Zayn. In fact, I can guarantee you haven’t seen the last of Sami Zayn, nor Kevin Owens, nor any of the other players in this act that we’ve put together.

There was a very compelling reason to put Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn on Elimination Chamber. The timing was perfect for us and oh my god, we just happened to be putting that show in Montreal, where the reception to Sami would be something that other audiences will aspire to top just because they wanna be the best audience ever.”

‘That’s What We Do’: Paul Heyman

Paul Heyman and Sami Zayn

Many people still believe that WWE should have saved the bout between Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn for WrestleMania 39. Paul Heyman addressed this belief and explained how the loss still helped the Honorary Uce:

“So we saw this Montreal opportunity. We also saw the timing could not be better. We’re heading into the Royal Rumble with Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens, and then all the different opportunities that interweave themselves with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. The timeline for the story just fit. I understand that people have wanted more and more and more for Sami. That’s the object. We try to do that with every challenger. We did that with Drew McIntyre going on over to Cardiff in the UK. We did that with Brock Lesnar going into SummerSlam when he drove a tractor out to the ring and demolished the ring. We did that with the group that we took on in the WarGames in Survivor Series. We did it with Kevin Owens going into the Royal Rumble.

We try to do that with everyone that comes into the co-starring role with Roman Reigns in terms of who his opponent’s going to be for the match that we’re trying to sell. And hopefully, on the flip side of being defeated by the Tribal Chief, the Undisputed Champion Roman Reigns, you are worth far more. Have a far more passionate fan base. Sell far more merchandise, sell far more tickets than you did before. You are more famous, more accepted, more valued by the audience than you were before we got our hands on you. That’s the whole object of what we do. I hope six months from now, people are still clamoring more and more and more for Sami, that’s what we do. We try to make stars out of everyone that’s within our orbit.”

Details on WWE Booking Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn Rematch

WWE is going back to a match between Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn for this Saturday’s house show in Toronto.

They first wrestled in Montreal at Elimination Chamber earlier this month that saw Reigns go over to retain the title.

Although this is a non-televised show, WWE felt they needed to make a change to what they originally announced, a tag team bout featuring Reigns and Solo Sikoa against Zayn and Kevin Owens, for the live event due to ongoing storyline reasons.

The Reasons

While speaking on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that the original tag team bout was changed as Zayn and Owens are still in the process of trying to get on the same page as Zayn wants Owens to forgive him and they go up against The Bloodline together.

Meltzer stated that it wouldn’t make much sense for Owens and Zayn to suddenly team together even though they’ve yet to make up, even if it is in front of a few thousand people in attendance. Also, WWE felt that they could sell more tickets to do Reigns vs. Zayn.

WWE has sold under 6,000 tickets for the show after the announcement. This was an increase of 600 tickets sold after Reigns was first added to the lineup of the card.

This proves that Reigns is a draw for WWE, although not as strong as John Cena, who drew an additional 2,000 tickets just 48 hours after he was announced for the March 6 Raw in Boston.

“The Right Call” – AEW Star Defends Sami Zayn’s Loss at WWE Elimination Chamber

Should Sami Zayn have captured the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship last week at the Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event?

Over the past year, Zayn, who always had a devoted fanbase, has become one of WWE’s most popular stars in recent memory, thanks to his work with the Bloodline.

At last weekend’s event, Zayn came up short against Roman Reigns, in the Canadian’s first one-on-one World Championship opportunity at a Premium Live Event.

The Right Call

Given Zayn’s immense popularity, and the fact that WWE Elimination Chamber was in Montreal, many have said that a title change should have happened.

WWE evidently felt differently, and at this time, the main event of WrestleMania 39 will see Cody Rhodes challenge Reigns for the title.

During the latest episode of his Extreme Life podcast, AEW’s Matt Hardy justified the booking decision.

“Cody has been an investment by WWE. Obviously, he was an investment when you saw that he had that injury and he still went into Hell in the Cell and he defeated Seth Rollins three matches straight. It was very obvious they had big plans for Cody Rhodes.”

“I think it’s the right move and I don’t think it hurts Sami one bit.”

Matt Hardy.

“Let him be the guy to defeat Roman, I think that’s the way to go. I think it’s the right move and I don’t think it hurts Sami one bit. If anything, that loss elevated Sami. It didn’t hurt him. It helped him. Also, you have a built-in competitor for Cody down the road with Sami.”

Hardy added that Sami is a “legitimate world champion level contender,” and reiterated that the loss in Montreal was the “right call.”

What’s Next for Sami Zayn?

While Sami Zayn will not be in the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship picture at WrestleMania, he may still leave with gold.

It is rumored that Zayn will team with Kevin Owens this April to challenge Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos.

Given Zayn’s popularity, there is a possibility that this match could headline Night One of WrestleMania, though nothing has been publicly confirmed at this time.

DDP reveals his advice to Sami Zayn

Sami Zayn may have come up short against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber, but some fans are still rooting for him to be added to the WrestleMania match with Reigns and Cody Rhodes.

WWE is reportedly concerned about Zayn’s popularity overpowering Rhodes. There has been speculation that Zayn and Kevin Owens will headline Night One of WrestleMania 39 against The Usos for the Undisputed Tag Titles.

What DDP told Sami Zayn

DDP

WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page said in an exclusive interview with Forbes that he gave Zayn advice at Royal Rumble. “I literally walked up to Sami at the Rumble and gave him a hug.”

“I love the Bloodline stuff. And Sami is a guy that, if you look at it, you don’t say ‘that guy’s money.’ But if you watch him and his storylines, and his interviews and his work in the ring, he’s money. He’s top guy money. Put him in a main event and he will draw, especially against the Bloodline, but really anyone.”

“I told him ‘bro, I love what you’re doing. Just be patient. Because it’s gonna happen.’ That’s the hardest thing for talent, is to be patient.”

Do you think Sami Zayn should be added to the Rhodes vs. Reigns match or do you think he should compete with Owens for the tag titles?

WWE Cautious About Balancing Cody Rhodes’ Storyline with Sami Zayn’s Popularity

Sami Zayn’s immense popularity has reportedly become cause for concern behind-the-scenes in WWE.

At WrestleMania 39, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns will lock horns with Royal Rumble-winner Cody Rhodes. ‘The American Nightmare’ has been a big hit with WWE audiences since he returned at last year’s WrestleMania.

Cody Rhodes backstage at Royal Rumble

Rhodes’ Hell in a Cell bout with Seth Rollins last year solidified him as a top dog in waiting. His return last month was greeted with huge cheers and his segments with Paul Heyman and Sami Zayn in the weeks since have garnered critical acclaim.

However, Zayn’s own rise to babyface stardom appears to be threatening Rhodes’. After a slow-burning run as ‘The Honorary Uce’ in The Bloodline, Zayn turned on faction head Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble. The segment and subsequent feud between the pair was highlighted as a strong ratings mover for WWE in 2023.

Sami Zayn at Elimination Chamber

While the rivalry seemingly came to an end at Elimination Chamber, there are concerns that Zayn’s connection with the audience could potentially derail the Reigns/Rhodes build.

“They Were Very Concerned About Sami Chants” – Dave Meltzer On Cody Rhodes Segment

On a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discussed the segment Cody Rhodes had with Paul Heyman on this week’s RAW. He revealed that the pacing of the segment was designed to give fans little breathing room to potentially launch chants for Sami Zayn into the situation.

“The stuff with Cody and Heyman – they [WWE] were very concerned about Sami chants, which is one of the reasons why they got Heyman out there in seconds. They did not want Cody in there by himself because they thought that – it didn’t happen – but they did everything in their power to make sure they kept that moving, they did not allow the audience a chance to start chanting or anything like that, it was just back-and-forth.”

Meltzer went on to add that the general consensus is that Zayn chants potentially hijacking the show would hinder Rhodes’ momentum.

“It was designed to give the audience no chance to chant because of the feeling that if they did it would hurt Cody’s momentum. And perhaps it would, and then it could create that groundswell [for Zayn] which is exactly what they don’t want right now.”

‘The American Nightmare’ himself later commented on the segment. Seemingly in kayfabe at first, Rhodes joked about the segment being cut short due to Heyman getting under his skin during the exchange. The son of a son of a plumber then made mention of his high merchandise sales of late.

Do you think Cody Rhodes will go over Roman Reigns at WrestleMania?

The Limit’s the Sky: WWE’s Unbreakable Glass Ceiling

The idea that WWE has a glass ceiling, an extra barrier to break through to get to the top level of stardom for wrestlers that don’t look a certain way, is hardly new. In fact, it’s so well known that WWE has played with the idea in storyline. Daniel Bryan’s rise to the top had HHH label him a “B+ Player” on TV, and CM Punk’s infamous pipebomb promo included him talking about grabbing “Vince McMahon’s imaginary brass rings” and getting nowhere for doing so. But the truth is WWE doesn’t have a single glass ceiling, it has two. The first can be broken, and it happens from time to time, Sami Zayn being the most recent example. But the second glass ceiling? It’s never been broken, and last Saturday Zayn became the most recent example of that too.

Ever since taking the reigns of the company from his father Vince Sr. in the ‘80s, Vince McMahon had shown the world what he thought a main eventer looked like: Tall and incredibly muscular or just all-around huge. The proverbial “guy who turns heads at an airport” metric. The steroid era came into full effect and we saw the start of a pattern that would continue in WWE to different degrees to this day: Some wrestlers that weren’t that talented or over got pushes and chances they didn’t deserve because they were big, and wrestlers that were talented or over found themselves denied those same opportunities because they were small.

The original person to break WWE’s first glass ceiling was probably Bret Hart. He was the first WWF World Champion to rise up from within the promotion’s system, climbing the card year by year and finally getting the top title despite the fact that he wasn’t an absolute behemoth. Yet if you look at his career, you’ll see that second ceiling, the one he didn’t break, the one nobody like him does.

When Bret won the WWF Title, it was late 1992. Dr.George Zahorian had been convicted the year before of providing steroids to WWF wrestlers, and the specter of a coming larger steroid trial aimed at Vince McMahon himself hung in the air. The magic of the ‘80s Hulkamania boom was starting to fade. So WWE tried something different. They put the title on someone comparatively smaller than the Hogans and Warriors of the world, someone who was supremely talented, they put it on Bret. Yet months later, at WrestleMania IX, Hart was dumped in a double title change, as WWF rolled the dice on seeing if there was any more juice to squeeze from another run with Hulk Hogan.

When that fizzled out in a matter of months, WWF turned its attention not back to Bret, but to building a new Hogan in the form of Lex Luger. Was Lex completely talentless, as some would claim? No. Was he the most talented potential main eventer WWF had access to at that time? No. Was he as talented or as over as Bret? No. But he did have an incredible body, even in a somewhat reduced form from his ‘80s physical peak. So in 1993, WWF spent the summer trying to build its new Hogan. We got the “Lex Express” bus tour, his slamming of then-champ Yokozuna on the U.S.S. Intrepid, and a count out win over Yoko at Summerslam that set him up for a coronation as champion at WrestleMania X.

Somewhere along the way Vince realized that Luger was not going to work, wasn’t going to be his new Hulk, so he turned to the most talented guy he had. WrestleMania X turned out to be the coronation for Bret rather than Lex. History would repeat though before the year was out, as just like he had lost the title to Yokozuna so he could in turn drop it to Hogan, Bret lost the title to Bob Backlund so he could pass it on days later to Kevin Nash, Diesel. Nash was far from the least talented big man Vince had ever pushed, and he had a charisma that would come out more and more throughout the rest of his career, but prior to the WWF, he had done nothing but gone through one embarrassing gimmick in WCW after another, from being a Master Blaster, to Oz, to Vinnie Vegas. Nash wasn’t as close to as talented as Bret. But he was taller. One year later Vince was ready to end the Diesel as the new top star experiment and who did he run back to as champ? Bret Hart.

Bret was our first example of breaking the first glass ceiling, but he was also our first example of the second ceiling you can’t break. The WWF pushed Bret as a star, as a main eventer, as its world champion even, but they never really ran with him as “the guy”. They were always looking towards the next wrestler who actually fit the mold of what they thought a true top star of the promotion should look like, and so time and time again they abandoned him, for Hogan, for Luger, for Diesel. Every time it failed they came back to the safety of Bret. He was good enough to hold the fort while WWF looked for its next true ace, but did they ever really see him as an ace himself?

Some will point to the business being soft in the mid-90s under Bret as a reason why WWF never fully got behind him. That’s a valid point, but it’s worth noting that in the doldrums after a boom period, as the first “undersized” homegrown talent WWF put on top after a decade of telling their fans that only the biggest could be the best. Everyone in this period “failed” to some degree at the box office, many more than Bret. WCW’s business during these early Bret reigns was even worse.

The WWF would eventually turn to a contemporary of Bret, another supremely talented but undersized wrestler who had risen slowly through the promotion, tag titles to Intercontinental Title to World Title, Shawn Michaels. Like Bret, he put on a great show in the ring but didn’t move the needle enough during a tough time for the promotion. Like Bret, he broke through that first glass ceiling but couldn’t break the second.

Next came Steve Austin, and you could argue he did break through the second ceiling. After all, he was not the size of a Hogan, and the WWF certainly did not initially see him as a top star, but eventually did, and pushed him as hard as they had Hulk. I’d point to Austin being big enough to get by the size bias, and I’d also point to Austin being a guy that was seen in many circles as a blue-chip prospect from very early on in his career. But even if you want to say Austin broke that second ceiling, I’d argue he’s the exception that proves the rule, as the Attitude Era was an aberration in WWF’s history, the one time where, with his back forced against the wall, Vince McMahon broke a lot of his usual habits. And if you do want to list Austin as the one example of breaking a second glass ceiling, then let the record show that the one time WWE has ever done that, it resulted in the highest popularity they have ever had.

From there we can see a ton of examples of the two ceilings. Chris Benoit got his WrestleMania main event win, but it was a reign that was like getting a gold watch at your retirement party. He had already been earmarked as the guy to “make” Randy Orton, a guy with the look and pedigree WWE valued, and months later at Summerslam, Benoit did just that. Years later, Rey Mysterio got his WrestleMania world title win, but like Benoit, WWE stuck him in a three-way rather than giving him a complete solo spotlight. Like Benoit, like Hart, his reign was just a transition from the jump, a placeholder given to a talented fan favorite while the company looked for the next star they could truly get behind with no reservations.

Rey is one of the most talented wrestlers who has ever lived. He has at times brought WWE nice chunks of the prized Hispanic fan demographic, to the point that so often when you hear WWE signing another Latin wrestler, word comes down that the company is hoping they can be “Their next Rey Mysterio”. Yet none of that talent or underrated drawing ability was enough for WWE to give him a fair opportunity to run with the ball as champ. His reign was just a few months, and saw him for a time lose on TV almost as much as he won. In his first month and a half as champion, Rey lost to Mark Henry, he lost to Great Khali, he went to a no-contest with Kane. Even with a top title, his size colored his presentation and booking. That first glass ceiling was broken, the second never showed a crack.

Then came CM Punk. Since the day he had signed with WWE, the climb had been all uphill. From very early on you heard how some of the power players in WWE felt he was overrated. His indie star reputation and his look worked against him, made WWE want to prove their existing biases right. You saw stories that WWE brass felt like he “Just simulated good wrestling”, that they resented him for dating women they thought were out of his league. But slowly, year by year, brand by brand, level by level, Punk’s talent proved to be undeniable. He gained fans, he rose up the card, and with his 2011 feud with John Cena, he was finally able to break into the upper levels of WWE stardom. The second ceiling remained.

If you want proof of that, look no further than Punk’s landmark year-plus reign as World Champion. Go look back at the PPVs during that reign and you might be shocked at on how many shows Punk’s title defences weren’t the main event, John Cena matches were. Even that year’s SummerSlam saw Punk play second fiddle to HHH and Brock Lesnar. From very early on in that title run, WWE made clear to the fans: Punk is our champion, Punk is a star, but he’s not THE star. That spot never changed and was never in danger of changing. No matter how many t-shirts Punk sold or how loud the cheers got, he was never going to fit WWE’s idea of what the top star should be, and so there was always going to be a limit to where he could go.

It’s telling that when Punk left WWE, two of his major gripes were the preferential booking of part-timers like Brock, and the fact he didn’t get to main event a WrestleMania. Punk as well as any wrestler saw the second ceiling. The main event of WrestleMania during the time period Punk was riding high was the ultimate honor, even above any title, it was what they gave to “the guy”. Even after achieving so much fame and fortune, Punk was unsatisfied, because he saw there was still a barrier put in place.

Finally, we got Daniel Bryan. Yet another hall of fame level talent that had to work twice as hard, get twice as over, and wait twice as long to rise to the top than others who were six inches taller or carried an extra 30 pounds of muscle. Yet another guy whose talent eventually made him undeniable. Yet another guy who broke that first ceiling, but only when WWE’s hand was forced. The fans had to hijack shows. They had to reject people like a returning Batista. Bryan had to be one of the hottest acts WWE had in years. CM Punk had to leave suddenly without warning. Only when all those stars aligned did Bryan get to break his first ceiling, begrudgingly get the thing that even Punk couldn’t get: the main event of Mania.

But as soon as Bryan became champion, the end of his story had already been written for him. It’s been said that the slot John Cena occupied, getting destroyed by Brock Lesnar at Summerslam to finish his rehabilitation as a top star that had started with his ending of Undertaker’s streak? That was originally Bryan’s role. It’s a role we had seen many times by this point, from Bret, from Rey, from Benoit, Bryan was to be the guy who held the fort as the next real star got made, the man who would be sacrificed to make them. Bryan could not have gotten more over, done more right in the months prior, and yet from the start of his reign, there was already an end game. There was that second ceiling.

There are so many examples I’ve left out. Great wrestlers who WWE dragged their feet on or never got 100% behind because of their size or image, and wrestlers who got undue opportunity after undue opportunity because they filled that superficial mold so well. The point isn’t that any of the wrestlers I’ve mentioned haven’t had great runs. They have all had careers that most wrestlers would kill for, become huge stars beloved by millions, made a lot of money, and had great moments of glory. That’s what breaking the first ceiling gets you. And it’s possible to do that, even if you don’t fit WWE’s ideal. You might have to get denied again and again first, you might have to work so much harder than others with so much less to offer, but it’s possible to get there.

No, the point is that the second ceiling is a push without limits. It’s a push at the absolute top where there is no set end in sight or goal other than seeing how big a star you can possibly be. It’s absolute faith in a talent, to the level where if there’s a speed bump in their rise, if half their audience even chants that you suck when you’re supposed to be the company’s top babyface, WWE works to fix it rather than to abandon the wrestler. It’s a push reserved only for people at a certain size, with a certain look, with a certain pedigree. It’s saved for the Hogans, the HHHs, the Cenas, the Romans. The people that are handpicked to be the top star before they ever prove that they are one.

Sami Zayn has broken the first glass ceiling. He’s the hottest rising star the company has had in years, since Nia Jax broke Becky Lynch’s nose, maybe even since the rise of Daniel Bryan. Sami’s storyline with Roman Reigns is the most over thing WWE has had in years. It’s a huge moment for Sami, something that he will always be remembered for, and will likely guarantee that he will never fall below a certain level of push ever again. Down the road he might even get a world title reign for a little while.

What Sami likely won’t get is what the fans want most, which is him beating Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania. Sami has made himself the hottest babyface WWE has had in years, and is at the center of a fairy tale storyline, but he probably won’t get the fairy tale finish. No, he and Kevin Owens will likely beat the Usos in a major match on Mania weekend, and get a huge reaction. It’ll likely be a great moment, but not the moment he deserves.

People have argued that Sami wouldn’t work well as champion, that in the long term, Cody Rhodes is the better option. That he wouldn’t be as good a public face for the promotion. That all might very well be true, but maybe not. Theories only become fact when you test them, and when it comes to people who look like Sami Zayn, WWE is never willing to truly try. They lack the faith. In wrestling you only truly know how big a star can be if you push them with no end in mind, with no hesitation, with no restrictions. If Sami won the main event of Mania, if he beat Roman for the title there, and it all didn’t work out, if a month later it became apparent that Sami’s run was a flash in the pan, or that he was better as a chaser than a champion, would that really hurt WWE? If they quickly changed course, put the title back on Roman, or Cody, would it do any damage to WWE at all?

I think we’re never going to know. One of the most fun parts of wrestling is seeing the rise of someone, of seeing them catch on in a way no one ever expected, and not knowing how hot they’re going to get. For months in WWE, you’ve been feeling that excitement. But if you’ve followed WWE’s history, that excitement has been tempered by the knowledge that for the Sami Zayns of the world, there’s a limit to where he can go. A high one, but a limit nonetheless. If he was a few inches taller, more muscular, a second or third-generation suave handsome American wrestler rather than a lanky ginger Syrian-Canadian, this would be just the start of Sami’s story, instead this is likely the peak. In WWE if you’re a Roman Reigns, the sky’s the limit. If you’re a Sami Zayn, the limit’s the sky.

WWE Higher Ups Reportedly Pushed For Sami Zayn Win At Elimination Chamber

The stakes were never higher for Sami Zayn this past weekend as he did his best to dethrone the long-time Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. In the end though, Zayn’s quest for glory, and gold, left him empty handed.

As Zayn revved up for Elimination Chamber, he admitted he didn’t know if he could beat “The Tribal Chief.” Despite his own doubts, though, support for Zayn continued to grow, not only from the WWE Universe, but from Cody Rhodes, and those behind-the-scenes as well.

As reported by Wrestling Observer Radio, some higher-ups in the company lobbied for Zayn to pull off a grand triumph over Roman Reigns at the February 18 premium live event. Though the identities of those pushing the agenda weren’t revealed, the possibility of Zayn winning appeared to be actively discussed.

Close, But No Cigar

Though the odds were heavily stacked against him, Zayn pieced together a valiant effort to combat Roman Reigns. At one point, Zayn stunned the champion by blocking a Superman Punch with an exploder. Later on, Zayn kicked out of a vicious spear — a feat rarely seen in Reign’s opponents.

Zayn’s hopes soon came crashing down, though, as Jimmy Uso appeared, delivering a superkick and a splash as the referee laid knocked out to the side. The second referee wouldn’t fair much luck either, as Reigns inadvertently struck him with a punch, paving the way for Jey Uso to make his appearance. As Jey hesitated to wield a chair on Sami, Reigns dodged an incoming spear from the former “Honorary Uce,” leaving Jey in Zayn’s path.

After accidently nailing his only ally left in The Bloodline, Zayn’s fate was sealed. The final blows came at the hands of Roman Reigns, who unloaded a series of chair spots and another spear to lay Zayn’s dreams to rest, and retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Encouraging Trend for WWE’s TV Viewership

An interesting trend among WWE’s viewers has been noticed this year.

The promotion’s TV audience are getting younger on average. The trend coincides with AEW’s audience getting older. Interestingly, until recently, AEW typically had a younger general audience than their competitors.

According to a recent study from Wrestlenomics, back in late 2021, prior to the numerous scandals that came out about Vince McMahon in 2022, AEW Rampage had the youngest viewing audience. The average age was 47. As 2022 wore on, though, the average age moved up to 53 which was also the norm for WWE RAW at the time.

Since Survivor Series last year, WWE SmackDown’s average audience age has started to lower from the mid-50s. The PLE was headlined by The Bloodline’s War Games victory over The Brawling Brutes, Drew McIntyre, and Kevin Owens. A key plotline in the match was Sami Zayn’s standing within The Bloodline.

Sami Zayn A Ratings Mover For WWE

In the 900+ days since he won the Universal Championship at Payback 2020, Roman Reigns finally took the, well, reigns of the company. His ‘Tribal Chief’ heel persona and heated feuds with the likes of Jey Uso, Edge, Brock Lesnar, and Drew McIntyre over the years have made him the top star he was long expected to become.

In Sami Zayn, it appears ‘The Head of the Table’ has found an unexpected box office draw to lock horns with. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer, Zayn’s booking is up in the air right now due to his proven drawing power in recent months.

The Bloodline’s angle with Sami Zayn has been at the forefront of WWE’s programming for some time now. It’s safe to say the shifts in audience numbers and age range are thanks predominantly to those involved in the storyline.

The long term plan for this year’s WrestleMania is seemingly still Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. That being said, it’s clear that the WWE have stumbled across another surprise potential top star in Sami Zayn as well as possibly Jey Uso, whose character work in The Bloodline has been met with universal acclaim.

Do you think Sami Zayn will continue to be a ratings mover for WWE past his Elimination Chamber showdown with Roman Reigns?

Roman Reigns Responds To Emotional Cody Rhodes – Sami Zayn Segment

Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn participated in a highly praised segment on this week’s episode of Raw, but Roman Reigns is not impressed.

This week’s episode of the Red Branded Show saw Zayn jumping the barricade once again. He called out Rhodes and asked if Cody really believes Sami can beat the Tribal Chief at Elimination Chamber.

The American Nightmare said that it doesn’t matter what anyone else believes. He said that he is here to finish his story and told Zayn to finish his own.

Roman Reigns Responds

This segment between the two title challengers received high praise from the fans but it failed to impress the WWE Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.

Roman Reigns posted a message on Twitter saying that everybody thinks they’re the guy until they meet the guy. He targeted Sami Zayn in the video, saying he’ll see the Honorary Uce in Montreal:

“If you gotta have a pep rally to convince each other that you can beat me? You don’t stand a chance. I’ll see ya in Montreal.”

Cody Rhodes will be main eventing WrestleMania 39 after winning the Royal Rumble. Sami Zayn on the other hand, is set to challenge Reigns for the Undisputed titles this Saturday, February 18 at Elimination Chamber from Montreal, Canada.

Cody Rhodes Is Open to Possible Triple Threat Match at WWE WrestleMania 39

Cody Rhodes vs. Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

Cody Rhodes Vs. Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Sami Zayn.

Why not both?

Since winning the Men’s Royal Rumble match last month, it has been known that the American Nightmare will challenge for WWE’s richest prize at WrestleMania 39, but who he’ll face remains uncertain.

Elimination Chamber

At this time, the WrestleMania 39 main event will see Rhodes attempt to dethrone Reigns and end his historic reign as WWE’s sole World Champion.

Before that though, Reigns will defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Sami Zayn at this weekend’s Elimination Chamber event.

During last week’s Raw, Rhodes said he believes Zayn can defeat Reigns in Montreal, and reiterated that point this week in a face-to-face segment with Sami.

Triple Threat

While the Royal Rumble winner has traditionally competed in singles action at WrestleMania, Rhodes is open to the idea of facing both Zayn and Reigns in Los Angeles.

Speaking on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Rhodes was asked about the possibility of a triple-threat match.

“I don’t really have a preference [between Reigns and Zayn.] Solely because I want to wrestle the best. People wanted a contender forever. So if two show up, don’t be mad. Don’t make it about A or B, or B or A, or one or two. Enjoy it all. That’s really been kind of the challenge. I can’t begrudge a dude getting super hot. I have no preference in terms of the direction it goes.

“I have no preference in terms of the direction it goes.”

Cody Rhodes.

“I really look forward to the moments when I’m in there, if they happen, Sami, whether that’s just on the road to WrestleMania. I think it’s different than people think. I think he’s doing amazing.”

Rhodes remained aware that what happens this Saturday at WWE Elimination Chamber could significantly affect his WrestleMania future.

“I feel like I’ve been able to really do some great stuff too. So bring it all together. Who knows what happens in Montreal? Who knows what happens at WrestleMania?”

Cody Rhodes.

If WWE does have a triple-threat match at WrestleMania, it will be the eighth time the stipulation will be used at a WrestleMania for a World Championship (2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015-albeit thanks to Seth Rollins, and 2021.)

Sami Zayn Understands The Impact Of The Bloodline Story: “It Will Be Remembered”

It would be an understatement to say that the storyline with The Bloodline and Sami Zayn is one of the most encapsulating stories of today. The many layers of this feud are intriguing to all sections of the wrestling audience. There aren’t many people who haven’t praised this saga. Per Zayn himself, every character of this tale understands that it will be remembered for a long time to come.

The Honorary Uce recently joined The Sick Podcast to talk about his feud with Roman Reigns and the story surrounding it. When asked how he feels being part of such an epic story, Zayn explained that it doesn’t seem so crazy when you’re in it:

“When you’re in it, it doesn’t seem that crazy. I think it’s one of those things where, because I’m in the middle of it. I’m so close to it that [it doesn’t seem crazy]. I realize that people are enjoying it.” said Sami Zayn, “I even see the reaction of like, people that are mildly into wrestling seem to be more drawn into wrestling as of late because of this story. I think it’s that kind of story that it’s actually brought some people even back which is amazing.

I can hear fans say, ‘Oh, I checked out of wrestling for a few years but then your feud with Kevin Owens brought me back or this story with The Bloodline brought me back.’ That’s a really rewarding thing to hear. For sure, I do realize that this is a very special story. I think everybody who’s performing in it at this point realizes, ‘Oh, yeah, this one will be remembered.'”

‘It Will Be Remembered’: Sami Zayn

sami zayn jey uso

Sami Zayn went on to explain how there are a lot of good wrestlers today and everyone can put on a good match. What’s harder is to create something that people will remember for a long time:

“What’s harder than doing something good is doing something memorable. If you can do something memorable in 2023, and I don’t even care what it is like, if it’s a podcast, if it’s a song, if it’s a viral thing [it doesn’t matter].

A lot of that stuff just comes and goes with the wind. Every day there’s a new one, every week there’s a new one. If you can do something with some lasting impact that people will talk about in 10-15 years, that’s huge. That’s huge nowadays. I think we stumbled onto something with this one. I think it will be remembered.”

Cody Rhodes & Paul Heyman’s WWE Raw Segment Booked for a Good Reason

WWE had an important objective to achieve in booking Cody Rhodes and Paul Heyman’s memorable in-ring segment on Monday’s Raw.

Rhodes has a one-way ticket to the main event of WrestleMania Goes Hollywood. As of this writing, he’s scheduled to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Of course, Sami Zayn is the X-factor that could change everything when he challenges Reigns for the titles at Elimination Chamber in less than two weeks.

We’re most likely going to see Reigns vs. Rhodes at WrestleMania, but WWE has to walk a thin line and make sure this long-planned bout is not derailed by Zayn’s surging popularity.

On the Feb. 7 episode of Monday Night Raw, Rhodes addressed the Orlando, Florida crowd. While he was talking, Heyman came out to continue the build for Rhodes’s match against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. Rhodes and Heyman got personal because of Heyman’s history with Cody’s father, Dusty.

The segment struck a chord with WWE fans and created anticipation for the inevitable confrontation between Rhodes and Reigns. According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, it’s reported that the segment was made to make the WrestleMania 39 match the primary focus for fans.

This was done because they were well aware of how hot the Sami Zayn thing is, and it was imperative to not have this WrestleMania main event angle feel secondary. So they knew going in that they had to do something. And they did.

– Dave Meltzer

He added, “It’s very important to the entire company that the Cody match is not the secondary match. But it’s also important that people don’t look at it as a competition between the two of them (Rhodes and Zayn), and then the people get behind Sami Zayn, and then that screws up Cody as a babyface.”

Walking a Fine Line with Rhodes & Zayn

WrestleMania 39

WWE is entirely behind Rhodes vs. Reigns for the Undisputed Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39. However, they will first have Reigns defend the title against Zayn in his home country of Canada at Elimination Chamber on Feb. 18. The WWE fans are behind Zayn. Still, they also support Rhodes and seem to look forward to the WrestleMania match.

It seems WWE is in a good position with two great babyfaces. WWE may have already figured out a way to get to Rhodes vs. Reigns without the fans complaining about Zayn. However, we will have to wait and see how the story will transpire.

Top WWE Merchandise Sellers Reportedly Revealed

WWE is doing serious business on the road to WrestleMania 39, but who are the biggest names when it comes to merchandise?

These days, merchandise sellers may not be WWE’s primary source of income (thanks to the promotion’s lucrative TV deals and Saudi contract) but still earn WWE a hefty sum.

More important merchandise sellers are a quantitative way for WWE to see who is the most popular among the fans.

Top Merchandise Sellers

With WrestleMania 39 drawing near, every WWE Superstar will hope to get the attention of the promotion’s higher-ups by moving a serious amount of merchandise.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer named the stars who are shining above the rest of the roster in terms of merch.

A lot of the big characters are very over when it comes to selling merchandise right now. Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, I’m sure Sami Zayn. They’re hot. That’s the deal. Things look good for them going into WrestleMania season.”

Dave Meltzer.

WrestleMania 39

We already know plans for two of WWE’s top merch sellers for WrestleMania, as Cody Rhodes will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal title this April.

As for Sami Zayn, it has been rumored that he and Kevin Owens will challenge Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos at WrestleMania 39.

It’s worth bearing in mind that these rumors began before Jey’s exit from the Bloodline at last weekend’s Royal Rumble event.

As for Bray Wyatt, all signs are pointing to an eventual clash with Uncle Howdy (played by his brother Bo Dallas) at WrestleMania.

WWE Royal Rumble 2023 Main Event Was A “Curtain Sellout” Backstage

Sami Zayn’s turn at the end of Royal Rumble 2023 captivated the 51,000+ fans in the Alamodome, millions watching worldwide, and the WWE roster and crew.

In the main event, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns retained his title against Kevin Owens, and the Bloodline continued their beatdown post-match.

When Zayn refused to attack his best friend, he instead struck Reigns with a steel chair, and was beaten down by the Bloodline (sans Jey Uso) for his insubordination.

Curtain Sellout

The main event of WWE Royal Rumble 2023 and what transpired after the match has been heralded by many as some of the company’s best storytelling in years.

The segment was also a hit backstage, with Fightful Select reporting that it was a “curtain sellout” with wrestlers and the crew gathering around monitors to see what happened.

It has been reported that WWE’s plan for this angle will see Zayn challenge the Tribal Chief at next month’s WWE Elimination Chamber event, in Sami’s hometown of Montreal.

During this week’s Raw, 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match winner Cody Rhodes confirmed his plans to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39.

Rumble Backstage

After the disaster of last year’s Royal Rumble (which resulted in Shane McMahon being fired) a lot was riding on this year’s event.

Fightful adds that the mood backstage was “very laid back” and that the children of several wrestlers were having fun behind the scenes.

The WWE Royal Rumble Premium Live Event went a bit over time, as it was scheduled for four hours and lasted four hours and 12 minutes.

Elimination Chamber Main Event Will Culminate the Top Storyline in WWE

Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns will seek to remind Sami Zayn who is the Head of the Table next month at WWE Elimination Chamber.

At last weekend’s Royal Rumble event, Zayn’s tenure as the Honorary Uce ended when he refused to attack Kevin Owens, and instead struck Reigns with a steel chair.

This moment of victory for Zayn was short-lived, as he was attacked by Reigns, Jimmy Uso, and Solo Sikoa immediately after.

Elimination Chamber Main Event

Reigns has been on the roll of his career since capturing the Universal Championship at Payback 2020, but Zayn is hoping to prevent the Tribal Chief from entering his third consecutive WrestleMania as Champion.

Dave Meltzer reports that the main event of the upcoming show will see Zayn challenge Reigns for the title, in Sami’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sami Zayn and Roman REigns

Though Meltzer said that plans are as always, subject to change, he said that major changes to plans have been far less frequent since Triple H’s appointment as Head of Creative.

Next month’s event will be the first WWE Premium Live Event to take place in Montreal since Breaking Point in September 2009.

WWE Elimination Chamber 2023 will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Sami Zayn: Can He Do It?

A year ago, the idea of Sami Zayn dethroning Roman Reigns was laughable, but there has been a growing consensus that this could happen.

Not only will the Canadian have the home-field advantage, but Zayn’s popularity has proven to be undeniable in recent weeks.

Many have compared Zayn today to Daniel Bryan circa 2014, and believe WWE may push him to the top as the crowd remains firmly on his side.

There’s also the factor of Cody Rhodes (the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble winner) who has been one of WWE’s top babyfaces since returning to the promotion.

WWE runs the risk of fans turning on Rhodes (a la AEW) if they push him instead of Zayn, and ironically, it was WWE’s steadfast focus on pushing Reigns as a babyface that caused the fans to turn on him.

Watch What Happened with Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens After the Royal Ruble Went Off the Air

Saturday’s WWE Royal Rumble premium live event concluded with the latest chapter of the ongoing saga of Sami Zayn and the Bloodline (Results).

After months of tension, the storyline that many have likened to Scorsese-level cinema culminated with Zayn interrupting a Bloodline beatdown on Kevin Owens, hitting Roman Reigns with a steel chair and being left for dead by Reigns, Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso. As for Jey Uso, well, he’s a bit conflicted.

To see what happened after the Royal Rumble went off the air, watch the footage above, courtesy of the What a Vlog Youtube channel.

Sami Zayn Attacks Roman Reigns, Gets Laid Out by The Bloodline at the Royal Rumble

Roman Reigns made his latest title defense as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion against Kevin Owens, a rematch two years in the making. However, it was the post-match angle that had people talking.

The title match at Saturday’s WWE Royal Rumble premium live event featured a back and forth affair to start things off. Although Owens got the upper hand after hitting a back splash on the floor, Reigns took over with a slower pace.

Owens did manage to hit a frog splash off the apron to the floor before getting back into the ring where Reigns connected with a powerbomb for 2. Reigns missed a spear, leading to a superkick and swanton bomb by Owens for 2. Owens missed a moonsault and Reigns hit a spear for 2. There was a referee bump. Although Zayn got a chair as Reigns asked him to do so, Owens managed to hit a stunner for 2. Reigns speared him through the barricade, bounced Owens’ head off the steel steps and hit a spear for the win.

Post-match, The Bloodline beat down Owens. Zayn pleaded with Reigns to top the attack. Reigns wanted Zayn to hit Owens with the chair. Zayn hit Reigns in the back. Reigns, Solo and Jimmy Uso beat down Zayn, but Jey walked out.

In recent months, Owens has been a thorn in the side of Reigns and The Bloodline. At Survivor Series: WarGames, Owens was on the opposite team, although he fell short thanks to Sami Zayn.

At the 2021 Royal Rumble event, Owens and Reigns battled in a Last Man Standing bout, but dealt with interference from The Bloodline and other factors, eventually leading to his loss against “The Tribal Chief.”
