Kurt Angle/WWE Update: Angle’s Pitch To Return, WWE’s Interest

Kurt Angle is trying to pitch a deal to WWE that would see him return to the company on a limited basis, working a deal similar to the one Shawn Michaels worked in his final run with the company. The deal would see Angle work the bigger shows and limited dates.

WWE has reportedly shown little interest in having Angle return as an in-ring performer.

Additionally, it’s said to be common knowledge within WWE that Vince McMahon is hesitant on having Angle on his roster given his past substance abuse problems, as an Olympic gold medalist tragically passing away while part of his company would result in a ton of negative media attention, among other problems.

Bret Hart Interview: Montreal Screwjob, Shawn Michaels, Returning To WWE, Today’s Landscape

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart was recently interviewed by Ryan Rider of WebSportsMedia.com. Here are some of the highlights of what Bret said about:

The Montreal Screwjob: “In hindsight, I really wish the whole thing had never happened. It was a lousy way for me to leave the company after being so lucky to be the champion and to have such a great history there. It never was the same after that day. If I could go back I don’t know what I can change to make it go differently. I know that I followed my heart through that whole process. I still believe that I was on the side of the right and did the right things that day. But I do wish that it never had happened and that I could have worked something out beforehand that could have been more productive for everybody.”

Returning To WWE: “I have way more great memories than I do bad. We had a great 14 years. We had that bad fall-out at the end, which I’m still sensitive about to this day. I suffered a stroke in 2002 that made everything else in my life that happened to that point pale in comparison. It was in the first few hours after I had a stroke that Vince [McMahon] gave me a call. Things were not good between us when that happened. He gave me a big pep talk in the hospital when I suffered my stroke. He talked about improving our relationship and doing things together down the road. I always wanted to be recognized and remembered for what I contributed to the company. He assured me that that would always be the case; to protect my reputation as far as what I accomplished there. Within the first few minutes we cleared so much off of the table. His words were that I was a fighter and that I would get back and get better. As I’ve got better over the years and recovered, I remember those dark hours and I’m grateful for that call. That softened things up for Vince and I and eventually I thumped him at Wrestlemania to write a better ending for us.”

His Iron Man match with Shawn Michaels At WM12:” I eager to raise the bar. I still think that for an hour match of any kind, no wrestlers have upstaged that match. Probably the hardest pro wrestling match any two wrestlers have ever had. Shawn was a great wrestler and a great athlete. That day when we had that match we were hell-bent on showing that you didn’t have to be a 300-pound steroid freak to make wrestling popular again. I take a lot of pride in the direction that wrestling went.”

Burying the Hatchet with Shawn Michaels: “I found a great relief from forgiveness. Forgiving the whole thing and making peace with it and moving on. What a therapy for me, I felt a million pounds come off my back when that was over. I think Shawn Michaels was carrying a lot of grief and he felt really lousy for his role in everything. How he screwed me over and how he looked that day, it bothered Shawn for a long time. When we made that truce and hugged on Raw, I can see that grief that he carried for so long was all lifted. I realized a few months later what a good thing that was for us. I recommend that to anybody out there who has issues where they can’t forgive someone, try to forgive; it’s really good for your soul.”

His Career-Ending Concussion: “A lot of people don’t realize how severe a concussion injury is. You have to listen to the doctors. You have to be really careful about them. When I had my injury, so many of the wrestlers and people that I knew didn’t believe I was hurt. I was pushed in the ring for so many weeks and when I finally saw a doctor he told me that my career was over. I had a pounding headache for almost two years, and a lot of side effects and ramifications that never leave. I still have balance issues from a kick to the head from one wrestler who didn’t know his own strength. You can see now that there are a lot of steps being taken that a wrestler who has possibly suffered a concussion is being evaluated properly and you make sure he is safe before getting back in the ring. Back in my day you’d get a pat on the back and get pushed through the curtain. People in all sports are waking up to the fact that concussion injuries are really serious. The ramifications can be long-lasting and severe.”

The Current Landscape Of WWE: “Wrestling today is as good as its every been. Younger, faster, better athletes than there used to be. The fork that wrestling took, it came right around the time that I became champion in the first place. The business today doesn’t get enough credit. There’s an amazing bunch of talents out there today. There’s an amazing group of young talents, innovators who are raising the bar. Delivering better matches than anyone has ever seen before. Cesaro is a guy who does a lot of unique stuff and is a great talent. He does a lot of strong man stuff that is just impressive to watch. Daniel Bryan is another one.

And the girl wrestlers too. They’re all drop dead gorgeous and really good wrestlers and good athletes. I find them very entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes. John Cena has been such a great champion in the last 10 years, this has kind of been his era. Wrestling is even better than it used to be and I think people should start paying more attention to these great stars.”

  • Vince Russo Talks Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW, Calls McMahon “Clueless”

Vince Russo is now writing a new monthly column for the “What Culture” website, the first of which is now available. His debut effort is called “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Vince Russo.” Below are some highlights.

Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW!

“When we had Ben Stiller on ‘Raw’, I couldn’t find him to produce the pre-tapes we needed. Where was he? How about smoking the WACY-TABACKY with Road Dog and X-Pac behind the trailers!!!

When we finally found Ben, who was promoting “Mystery Men” at the time, he was more than willing to take on a direct blow to the head courtesy of Double J’s, Jeff Jarrett’s guitar. To this day I don’t know if Ben agreed so willingly because he was a “mark”, or simply still high due to his earlier escapades with Sean Waltman and Brian James.”

Getting Threatened By Goldberg And Shawn Michaels

“I, myself, while never having gotten into an “actual” fight while serving my duties of Head Writer at WWE, WCW and TNA, was actually threatened on not one . . . but, two occasions. The first time was by Shawn Michaels after I cut a promo on him to his friend Triple H, for hijacking the WrestleMania 15 main event by getting into Steve Austin’s ear, who then talked Vince McMahon into changing the three way between him, the Rock and Mick Foley into a two-way, leaving Mick the odd man out. And, also a few years later by Bill Goldberg who was not happy when I needed him to do a job to Scott Steiner. Thankfully, I was able to get out of both predicaments completely unscathed.

In another backstage ‘confrontation’ I also once saved Sunny’s life, while putting my own on the line! I actually attempted to stand between Luna, and her target which she INTENDED TO KILL!!! The encounter ended with Luna spearing me into a laundry cart. I swear, Luna could have taken 50% of the MALE roster in a fight during her hey-day.

Luna, bless her heart, had it out for ALL the divas who in her mind weren’t “actually” wrestlers. She despised Sable, and made it very difficult for her to find her way early on. But, if you knew Luna, you loved her, she really did have a big heart. That was just the “old school wrestler” in her that would rear its ugly head from time to time. I’m also proud to say that about three years ago, I pulled “Awesome Kong” off radio personality “Bubba the Love Sponge”.”

Stone Cold Didn’t Want To Do The Beer Truck Angle!

“In the epic scene on “Raw”, when Steve Austin drove a beer truck into the arena, I actually had to talk Steve into it! The Texas Rattlesnake said he just wanted to enter in his pick-up. He didn’t “see” the beer truck. However, once the segment was produced, I think Steve totally understand the impact that it was going to have on the fans for many years to come. It was truly, one of the most classic scenes in the history of “Monday Night Raw”. Thankfully I talked him round, he didn’t go with the pick up, riding in instead with the beer truck, driving his way into wrestling history.”

Vince McMahon Didn’t Have A Clue About Mainstream Publicity

“In the Attitude Era, the hottest thing at that time on MTV was Tom Green. He was light years ahead of the “Reality TV” boom that would follow many years later. I wanted him to be revealed as the man responsible for Raw’s GTV!

Unfortunately, the idea never came into fruition because Vince McMahon had NO IDEA who TOM GREEN was! So instead of “GREEN TV”, it became “GOLDUST TV”.

That wasn’t the first time that Vince wasn’t “exactly” up on his pop culture. A few years later I had shot pre-tapes with “Dancin’” Steve Richards and the Blue Meanie as a parody of the “Blair Witch Project”. We called it the “Blonde Bitch Project”. The idea was to take an entertaining “shot” at Sable who had abruptly decided to leave the company at the time. Once again, the pre-tapes never saw the light of day because Vince had “no idea” what the “Blair Witch Project” was. The pre-tapes, that never aired, were shot ON LOCATION at WWE writer Ed Ferrara’s house… and backyard.

But wait… there are even YET MORE EXAMPLES of Vince McMahon’s little knowledge of the HERE and NOW. Here are a few more gems!

A friend of mine in the Public Relations Department at the WWE, pitched Vince to have legendary Eagles guitarist JOE WALSH perform “Rocky Mountain Way” at WrestleMania XI. Vince respectfully declined because he had never heard of the song, “Rocky Mountain Way”, or its singer/writer JOE WALSH!!!

Last, but not least, upon his arrival in the WWE, we shot a series of vignettes with Val Venus and LEGENDARY porn star Jenna Jameson. We even went as far as even having Jenna BUCK NAKED in Bruce’s Prichard’s Jacuzzi with Val. Upon seeing the footage, Vince decided against airing them, because in his words, Jenna was “ugly”.”

  • Video: Shawn Michaels Talks About Why He Hasn’t Come Out Of Retirement

WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels has commented on why he has not come out of retirement since wrestling his final match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26. In a new documentary airing on the WWE Network spotlighting his classic WrestleMania 25 match against the Dead Man Michaels said,

“To have the WrestleMania 25 match and honestly sit there like two old gunslingers and think, ‘There’s no better way for this to go.’ And being at a maturity level where we can look at each other, appreciate each other, appreciate the changes in each other, appreciate everything about this job and how long we’ve done it and everything we’ve been through,” Michaels said.

“But, as two company figures who have been here the longest – somewhat together – and seen a lot come and go, that’s special. That’s why it’s always been easy for me to not desire to come back and not do it again.”

“I’ve never done a perfect thing in my life, but I am at least wise enough to know those things that I’ve done that shouldn’t be messed with.”

Shawn Michaels Comments On Rumors Of Him Coming Out Of Retirement To Wrestle Daniel Bryan

WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels has commented on reports that WWE wanted him to come out of retirement for a match against his former student, Daniel Bryan.

The speculation began after last October’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view when Michaels, who was serving as the guest referee in Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship match against Randy Orton, cost Bryan the title. According to HBK, there were no plans for him t get back  in the ring.

On Jim Ross’ Ross Report podcast, Michaels said the topic would come up regularly whenever he would attend WWE shows, but not from high-ranking WWE officials. In the nearly 5 years since he officially retired, at no point has he given WWE any indication that he would wrestle again. Shawn added that proposed the angle on RAW where Daniel Bryan put him the Yes Lock to get revenge.

Part 2 of Shawn Michaels’ appearance on Jim Ross’ Ross Report podcast is now online and can be heard at PodcastOne.com.

HBK Talks About The Streak Ending, Undertaker Retiring, CM Punk

Jim Ross’s guest on this week’s Ross Report podcast at PodcastOne.com was fellow WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels. A large portion of the show focused on Brock Lesnar defeating The Undertaker at WrestleMania and ending his legendary undefeated streak.

Michaels said that he and everybody else backstage were shocked when the referee counted the pinfall. Corroborating our reports from right after WrestleMania, he said that only “one man” makes the call about a decision like that – and that’s Vince McMahon.

He revealed that Vince’s decision for Undertaker’s streak to end came just 4 hours before the show went on the air.

JR saw the Undertaker backstage at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony and hugged his longtime friend. When he asked Undertaker how much longer he plans to continue wrestling, he replied, “I don’t know, i’ll let you know in a few hours.”

Shawn said that Undertaker’s choice about whether he wants to wrestle again has nothing to do with the streak being broken. Michaels said after the match, Undertaker told him he’d call him in a few weeks to catch up.

Shawn also gave his thoughts on CM Punk, saying that he completely understands Punk’s mentality of being mentally burned out.

Jim Ross Blog: HBK On Ross Report, RAW Thoughts, Wyatt Family’s Development

The following are highlights of the latest Jim Ross blog:

On his Ross Report podcast with HBK: “Today (Tuesday) at approximately 6 pm pacific time our much anticipated Ross Report Podcast with the great Shawn Michaels will be available for FREE downloading from podcastone.com or via iTunes. This is one of the most riveting and compelling interviews that I’ve ever been associated with and I feel confident that you are going to enjoy it immensely.”

On Sheamus winning the U.S. title: “Sheamus winning the US title in the Battle Royal was a solid start to RAW with good action and featuring multiple talents. Dean Ambrose US title reign albeit long was uneventful and perhaps Sheamus can help add value to the long time title. I could also see Sheamus trading in his protagonist jersey for an antagonist one sooner than later. Sheamus is a very smart talent who, I think, would be able to add the necessary heel nuances to his game.”

On Kane and Daniel Bryan: “I wasn’t crazy about WWE World Champion Daniel Bryan seemingly retreating from Kane but I mark it off to DB simply wanting to protect his wife and doing what he can to keep her out of harm’s way. This matter needed to be explained better because one can’t have the company’s top champion being reluctant of physically engaging with anyone. I am of the opinion that this Daniel Bryan/Kane storyline needs better explanation for the TV audience and if nothing else for more viable questions to be asked that encourage the audience to mentally invest in what they are seeing.”

On The Wyatt Family’s development: “The continued creative development of the Wyatt Family has my interest even though I have no idea where it is going. I love Bray Wyatt’s promos and his in ring work as big men with a second gear are so marketable and so hard to find. Until Bray does something so heinous that the audience turns on him he’s going to continue to travel the cool, unique antagonist road that really isn’t a traditional heel road at all. It is however a star road and perhaps it’s more important to develop pure stars in today’s market, in the mind of some, than it is to develop traditional pro wrestling villains. Time will tell how it all works out but I am enjoying the evolution nonetheless.”

On Adam Rose: “Have to admit that I’m not plugged into the Adam Rose persona yet but I do know that the wrestler himself is a talented South African who can go bell to bell. I’m certainly willing to give Adam Rose a chance but his RAW exposure Monday night did not flip the switch for me just yet.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: HBK/Goldberg On The Ross Report, TNA Sacrifice & More

The following are highlights of a new Jim Ross blog:

On his “Ross Report” podcast: “Our Ross Report Podcast is growing like crazy as with just one show per week we are staying in the top ten of ALL sports podcasts on the iTunes charts. Thanks goes to all of you for supporting it. You can download our podcasts free at podcastone.com and via iTunes.”

“Right now we feature a fantastic interview with the amazing Gail Kim including a cameo from her husband Chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network.”

“Next week is the blockbuster part one of my interview with Shawn Michaels who discusses how close he came to returning to the ring to face his former student Daniel Bryan, his reaction while sitting at the infamous Gorilla Position during WM30 specifically when The Streak ended, his HOF experience this year and so much more including analyzing many of his most memorable moments. Shawn offers a perspective on CM Punk’s WWE departure that might surprise you and our conversation in San Antonio that was the catalyst for HBK returning to WWE after a four year hiatus.”

“In a couple of weeks I talk to Bill Goldberg which is already taped about him returning to WWE, how he would like to see it done and why he is motivated at age 47 to return to the ring. Bill also discusses the NFL. UFC, training at the WCW Power Plant and who helped him the most in the early part of his career along with the political world of pro wrestling as seen through the eyes of a ‘rookie’ non wrestling fan at the time. It’s a fascinating conversation with the enigma known as Goldberg.”

On recent pro wrestling live audiences: “Some thoughts on pro wrestling’s live audiences…..St. Louis wasn’t great for WWE Monday night and the lack of noise adversely affected the broadcast IMO. Here’s how I look at that matter: No one buys a not so cheap ticket, packs up the car, drives to the venue and parks to come in and have their mind made up to NOT make noise. The commitment to get to one’s seats is too great to come and act as if one is watching golf or tennis. The product that one sees before them is what is going to motivate a crowd to emotionally invest and to be loud and proud. The St Louis crowd, normally a very good wrestling crowd, apparently did not see enough to make the show sound special. There were moments but not enough of them over the three hour show.”

On TNA Sacrifice: “TNA had a PPV a week ago where the smaller crowd in a sound stage was embarrassingly quiet and provided little to no motivation for the talents some of which had excellent bouts. TNA is in an especially precarious position as they are in the closing months of their TV rights deal with Spike and have zero momentum or leverage with which to negotiate. Trying to save money by having the TV’s in the same venue more often than not in Orlando is the kiss of death. If the crowds that attend IMPACT events there don’t react to what they saw on the loaded, PPV card then they are unlikely to ‘pop’ for much of any thing. That makes the TV show sound uninspired and not ‘must see’ TV. It’s a good thing that Impact is going to do some of their tapings outside the Orlando sound stage going forward as that scenario is one designed for failure.”

“I am all for Impact and all wrestling companies for that matter to succeed because he more places that talents, crew, etc have to work the better it is for the overall business.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: Tonight’s RAW, Lee Marshall’s Passing, HBK On The Ross Report

The following are highlights from the latest Jim Ross blog:

On the passing of Lee Marshall: “Condolences to the family, friends and fans of the late, broadcaster Lee Marshall who passed away over the weekend. Lee was a big time radio voice in Los Angeles among other markets before ne ventured into pro wrestling, a former AWA and WCW broadcaster who was brought to Atlanta by Eric Bischoff who I assume Eric met in AWA while working for Verne Gagne. Lee was also the voice of Tony the Tiger. I never worked with Lee that I recall but mutual friends always spoke highly of him. RIP Lee.”

On Shawn Michaels on the Ross Report: “I will also be working on the blockbuster Shawn Michaels podcast that has so much info in it that it will be a two parter beginning next week. Shawn’s take on Undertaker’s Streak ending is fascinating as are his thoughts on CM Punk leaving WWE as many remember that HBK left WWE for approximately four years at one point in his amazing career. These are just two of the many topics we discussed in depth with, arguably, the best to ever perform for a living inside the 20 foot squared circle.”

On tonight’s RAW: “RAW should be interesting tonight. I can’t see WWE World Champions Daniel Bryan wrestling after taking THREE, Tombstone piledrivers last Monday from Kane but who knows? One thing that I do know is that St. Louis is a terrific wrestling city and the night that we had all the NWA Champions back as our guests there was SO special. St. Louis was also the city that we were in when we found out that my dear friend Brian Pillman passed away the night before. Mixed memories of St. Louis without question but it’s a great city nonetheless. If it hadn’t been for KMOX radio’s coverage of Cardinal baseball with Harry Caray and Jack Buck I may never have been a broadcaster.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: HBK On The Ross Report, Daniel Bryan Losing Fans?, FOX Sports 1

The following are highlights of the latest Jim Ross blog:

On the current and upcoming Ross Report podcasts: “This week’s Ross Report podcast is going great guns with guest @TheJimCornette as we essentially solve all the ills of today’s pro wrestling genre. Seriously, it’s one of the best discussions that I have ever participated in regarding the business that many of us still embrace. I hope you will check it out at podcastone.com or via iTunes.”

“Next Tuesday pm our conversation with the amazingly talented and beautiful Gail Kim drops and we explore Gail’s career, the major differences in working in WWE vs. Impact Wrestling, Gail’s overall take on women in wrestling, her future, the delicate balancing of her career and her marriage to celeb chef Robert Irvine of the Food Network and much more. Gail is dead on honest about every topic and her candor was extremely refreshing.”

“This past Tuesday night I talked for almost two hours with Shawn Michaels and it was the most compelling interview that I’ve done to date as HBK shares what it was like to to sitting at the Gorilla Position at WM30 specifically when the Undertaker’s Streak abruptly and shockingly ended. It’s a perspective that can’t be replicated and that Ross Report Podcast is excited to premier on Tuesday May 6. Shawn’s openness and straight talk makes this one of the most riveting and informative podcasts ever.”

“This week I also confirmed Lance Storm and MVP for future Ross Report Podcasts as we keep cranking them out and hope that we can continue to build our audience by producing and recording some stout shows.”

On Daniel Bryan losing fans: “Amazing that some ‘fans’ are jumping off the Daniel Bryan bandwagon now that the highly skilled star has won the WWE World Title and the reason is that they feel that the ‘chase’ is over and therefore DB has no more challenges ahead of him. Has anyone noticed that Bryan is STILL smaller than virtually everyone he wrestles and is STILL an underdog even as the champion? Keeping a fan favorite in varying levels of jeopardy or peril works….it always has and always will. It has worked in films and in main stream sports since their beginning, which is why they keep score, keep track of the standings, and play for something at the end of the year. If Bryan can continue to amazingly overcome the odds and retain the WWE World Title in non fluke wins, when the time comes for him to lose the championship, to Brock Lesnar would be my suggestion, say at Summerslam or even in November at Survivor Series, DB won’t fade away. The best pure wrestler in the world isn’t going to disappear unless he is removed from TV or he suddenly forgets how to perform his craft.”

“The Daniel Bryan situation as it relates to going forward this year is seemingly being ‘over thought’ by many fans who have WAY too much free time on their hands.”

On narrarating an upcoming FOX Sports 1 boxing documentary: “My narration of a @FoxSports1 feature on the young, boxing son of the late Tommy Morrison airs Monday night on FoxSports1. I will tweet more info when I receive it. Morrison was a distant relative of John Wayne, defeated George Foreman for the WBO Heavyweight Title and died much too young at age 44. The native Oklahoman was also a star high school football player at Jay, Oklahoma and I officiated some of his games when he played there back in the day. It’s a really cool feature on Trey Lippe Morrison who’s looking to impact the heavyweight division in the world of boxing.”

  • WWE Interviews The Kliq About Infamous MSG Curtain Call Incident

The official WWE website recently interviewed all of the members of the infamous “Kliq” about the “Curtain Call” incident at Madison Square Garden in 1996. Below are some highlights of the interview.

WWE.COM: Did you guys plan The Curtain Call ahead of time or did it just kind of happen that night?

SHAWN MICHAELS: It was talked about in Europe then it was never talked about again. We had done a European tour, then we came back and had this last run. For us, not that we needed a reason to celebrate something, but everything was the last time we’ll be doing this, the last time we’ll be doing that.

KEVIN NASH: This may be the last time we’re in a Lumina van! We should really drink tonight.

    [Laughter.]

MICHAELS: Then, that night, as best as I can recall, it was Hunter coming up and going, “Hey, are we doing that thing we talked about?” I don’t think anybody remembered it.

NASH: I walked in and talked to Vince and Pat [Patterson]! You [points to Michaels] were with me and he said it was fine and we were supposed to go to [New York City steakhouse] Smith & Wollensky afterwards. And it just turned into a thing …

WWE.COM: Before we get into the fallout, let’s talk about the incident itself. What do you remember about that moment at the end of the night?

SCOTT HALL: I remember standing in the ring and we’re all there together. It was unheard of, but the people appreciated it. I remember looking at Kev, we’re all hugging and I remember thinking we all made it.

NASH: I remember — and I think we may have even said it in the ring that night — that we weren’t disbanding The Kliq.

MICHAELS: We were taking over the business.

NASH: We’re going to go down south and take over Ford Motor Company. You guys run GM and we’ll run the automobile industry.

MICHAELS: I remember Vince came up to me after and said, “Did that mean a lot to you?” I said, “Yes it did.” “Then it meant a lot to me.” And he was fine. It was fine that night.
