Triple H & Stephanie McMahon Believe By Signing Ronda Rousey Will Open Door For Other Athletes In WWE

The power couple of the WWE, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, continue to make the media rounds to promote the biggest event of the year for the sports entertainment company, WrestleMania 34.

At this year’s event, Triple H and McMahon will team up to take on former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey and Raw General Manager Kurt Angle in a Mixed Tag Team Match.

Triple H and Stephanie recently spoke with Fox News to promote WrestleMania 34.

During the interview, they were asked by signing Rousey if it open the doors to other athletes outside to pursue a career in the WWE. Here is what they had to say:

Triple H: “I do, you know the performance center and our recruiting efforts have sort of changed that perception outside of our world anyway. There’s been a lot of, whether it be NFL players or soccer globally or anything else that have had a desire maybe to try and want to do this but never had that pathway in front of them. The pathway is now there, I say it all the time: What I’m doing internationally with all these other markets is I’m trying to create pathways. I’m bringing a recruiting team there trying to create an environment where if somebody says “Man, I love that, and I’d like to try and do that,” there’s a way for them to do that. Ronda took that path that wasn’t there before. We created that path, she came to us; she approached us probably about the same time we approached her, but the pathway was there and I think now she will open a lot of eyeballs of athletes around the world to say “Well, why can’t I?”

Stephanie McMahon: “We recruit from the Olympics; we recruit from rugby, football overseas; we recruit from everywhere. I do think Rhonda has brought heightened awareness. She is arguably one of the world’s greatest athletes. She is also just a tremendous star. She just exudes this energy and charisma that you can really connect to because you have to have the total package. Athleticism alone is not enough. And I think Rhonda speaks to the caliber of athleticism that is in WWE but it also speaks to the women’s evolution, and I can’t wait to see how her presence will give the women’s evolution even more weight.”

Triple H and McMahon also talked about WrestleMania 34, the experience of the event and more. You can read the entire interview here.

Stephanie McMahon Speaks On Ronda Rousey Possibly Joining WWE After UFC Retirement

WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon recently took part in a USA Today article about the possibility of Ronda Rousey joining the WWE roster after she retires from the UFC. Stephanie called Rousey’s WrestleMania 31 segment with Triple H and The Rock “awe-inspiring,” and indicated that she thinks Rousey will work with WWE again.

“Our fans love Ronda. Ronda has this cross platform appeal in terms of all forms of entertainment,” Stephanie said. “We would welcome her with open arms. She is the total package.”

Stephanie continued to praise Rousey in the article, saying that her presence brought “magic and energy in the air” at ‘Mania 31. She noted that WWE often bases their storylines on pop culture, and that “it doesn’t get much more popular than Ronda” in the world of sports. Stephanie also mentioned that Rousey got her “Rowdy” nickname from late wrestling legend Roddy Piper.

“Muhammad Ali credited pro wrestling for where he got his trash talking skills and persona,” Stephanie told USA Today. “I would like to think there is a bit of ‘Rowdy’ and wrestling history in Ronda and the way she carries herself, but she is definitely her own individual brand.”

Rousey is scheduled to fight Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 on December 30th. You can read the entire USA Today piece here.

– Director Brian Knappenberger will premiere his documentary on Hulk Hogan and Gawker during the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, which begins on 1/19. The synopsis for the film is below:

NOBODY SPEAK: Hulk Hogan, Gawker and Trials of a Free Press / U.S.A. (Director: Brian Knappenberger) — The trial between Hulk Hogan and Gawker Media pitted privacy rights against freedom of the press, and raised important questions about how big money can silence media. This film is an examination of the perils and duties of the free press in an age of inequality.

Stephanie McMahon Wants To Sign Ronda Rousey

TMZ Sports posted a video this week of Stephanie McMahon talking about the future of women in WWE. McMahon put over how much she enjoyed the Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks main event at Hell In A Cell, and said her goal is to have women headline WrestleMania in the coming years.

The topic of conversation quickly switched to Ronda Rousey, who recently indicated that she only plans to have a handful of more fights before retiring and becoming a full-time actor. Stephanie said she hopes Rousey will consider WWE as a career option, and joked that she still has to get back at Rousey for putting her in an armbar at WrestleMania 31.  McMahon didn’t indicate if WWE had reached out to Rousey yet, but says she’s certainly going to try.

Read Stephanie McMahon’s New WWE Contract Extension For 2016-2019

As noted earlier, WWE’s 10-Q filing (PDF) with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the third quarter of 2016 includes an amendment to Stephanie McMahon’s talent contract with WWE. As an executive officer of a public company, all of her contracts have to be filed publicly. This is why the contracts for Triple H/Paul Levesque, Vince McMahon, Jim Ross, and others have gone public over the years.

Technically speaking, this was just an amendment/extension, not an entirely new contract, and here’s the full text, which is on page 50 of the above linked filing and pays her a guarantee of $500,000 annually:

FIRST AMENDMENT TO BOOKING CONTRACT

This First Amendment to Booking Contract (“First Amendment”), effective as of October 7, 2016, is by and between WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT, INC. In consideration of the promises, covenants and agreements set forth herein and for other good and other valuable consideration, the receipt and sufficiency of which are hereby acknowledged, the parties, intending to be legally bound, hereby agree as follows:

1. The parties agree that the “Term” of the Agreement shall be extended to run an additional three years. Thereafter, the Term shall extend on a year-to-year basis unless either party terminates it by written notice to the other party at least ninety (90) days prior to the then effective end of the Term.

2. The parties further agree to amend the Agreement by deleting paragraph 7.1(a) in its entirety and replacing it with the following provision: “Unless terminated pursuant to the terms herein, PROMOTER shall pay WRESTLER each Contract Year the total sum of Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($500,000.00) (referred to hereinafter as “Minimum Annual Compensation”). PROMOTER agrees, commencing with the Effective Date, to pay WRESTLER the Minimum Annual Compensation in fifty- two (52) weekly installments consistent with PROMOTER’s regular payment procedures.”

3. All terms not defined in this First Amendment shall have the same meaning given them in the Agreement. Except as expressly or by necessary implication modified by this First Amendment, the terms and conditions of the Agreement are hereby ratified and confirmed without limitation or exception and shall remain in full force and effect.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the parties hereto have executed this First Amendment as of the date first above written.
