WWE Survivor Series — Where Legends Are Born & Moments Are Made

In 1987, WWE presented their first ever “Survivor Series” event, the first non-WrestleMania pay-per-view event, originally designed to steal viewers away from their main competition at the time, NWA’s “Starrcade,” which was the south’s version of “WrestleMania” (even though Starrcade came first) and was WWE’s attempt to throw down the gauntlet to the pay-per-view industry.

Basically put, if you were a pay-per-view provider and you decided to carry Starrcade, you would not be able to carry WrestleMania, a proven success in the pay-per-view industry.

That was the beginning.

From there, throughout the years, a number of historical events would take place at a Survivor Series event.

In no particular order, you can point to single Superstar debuts such as The Undertaker in 1990, which was also the debut of the infamous Gobbeldy Gooker. Which was the more famous of the two, well, I’ll let you decide.

1996 saw the debut of “Rocky Maivia,” to this day arguably the biggest cross-over name to ever emanate from the world of sports entertainment. At the time, while he was touted as being the first-ever third generation performer, and as “Good Ole’ JR” would say, “that’s gonna be the man, right there! That’s blue-chipper, right there!” with all of the enthusiasm the only Jim Ross could muster, oh how true those words would come to be as time went on.

One year later, the most infamous moment perhaps in all of WWE would take place. A moment that certainly began the shift in the WWE vs. WCW “Monday Night Wars” would take place, as not only did Bret Hart get “screwed” in what would become known as “The Montreal Screwjob,” but in many ways, that became the birth of the “Mr. McMahon” character, one that without he, the “Stone Cold” Steve Austin character may have never reached the heights that he would go on to achieve throughout his illustrious career.

In 1999, WWE’s first ever Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle, made his official in-ring pay-per-view debut, defeating Shawn Stasiak in the second match on the card.

In 2002, the Survivor Series featured another “first,” as this would be the first time that we were treated to a new gimmick match known as the “Elimination Chamber.” A man notorious among the wrestlers within the profession, just a few months ago the match concept was thrown out, large in part — according to various rumors — because of how unforgiving the structure was for those who had to actually compete inside it.

Most recently, the big “debut” of a match, concept or character took place at the November 18, 2012 edition of the WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view, which took place in Indianapolis, Indiana, as three men who would become known as “The Shield” made their official WWE main roster debut. Those three men would become known as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

Just to show how important those three men are, one is involved (as a Team Captain, no less) in the main event of this year’s Survivor Series, which takes place tonight from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

That man is Seth Rollins.

Another one of the former Shield members, Dean Ambrose, is in what is being billed as arguably the legitimate co-main event of the evening, as he collides with another rising up-and-comer, Bray Wyatt.

And that leaves Roman Reigns.

Well, while he’s not officially booked on the actual card for tonight’s show, let’s just say there are a lot of rumors going around that claim we just may see him involved on the show tonight in some form or fashion after all.

Finally, that leaves two other names.

First up, the hometown boy. St. Louis’ own “The Viper” Randy Orton is rumored to make his return to WWE, after taking a brief hiatus to film a WWE Studios project, “The Condemned 2.”

Last, and absolutely not least, is “The Icon.”

While yours truly is not holding his breath and is going to take a “wait and see” approach before getting overly excited, rumors on the internet over the past few days insist that a certain Crow-painted style performer will make his very, very highly-anticipated WWE pay-per-view debut tonight at the Scottrade Center.

That’s right, folks. “The man they call Sting” is rumored to make his WWE debut, after all these years, at the same show that has produced so many memorable debuts, characters, matches and moments. If, in fact, “The Stinger” does make his WWE debut on tonight’s show, this writer has his new favorite Survivor Series moment of all-time.

We’re just hours away! Make sure to keep it locked right here at SEScoops.com for the most extensive, in-depth, live results coverage of tonight’s WWE Survivor Series 2014 pay-per-view!

    – On the latest Steve Austin Show podcast at PodcastOne.com, WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin once again clarified his future in pro wrestling. Austin said despite recent reports that he was gearing up for a “comeback” (actually a comeback to Gold’s Gym), he has no desire to take bumps again and no time in his busy schedule to train for one more match.

He said that he has a project that he can’t talk about in February, so the chances of him returning at WrestleMania 31 are slim to none. Despite all that, he did mention that if he did ever return, there’s doubt in his mind that he’d be able to whoop Brock Lesnar’s ass.

Steve Austin Confirms He’s “Getting Back Into Shape For A Comeback”

During a recent Steve Austin Show podcast at Podcastone.com, WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin dropped a bombshell announcement, revealing:

“I’m trying to get back into shape for a comeback.”

While he didn’t elaborate, this is the first time Austin has publicly acknowledged a strong desire to return to the ring.

Austin has stated numerous times that you can “never say never” and he’d return if all the stars (opponent, creative money) were aligned, but it now sounds like Austin might have a specific plan for one more match.

Austin’s statement comes just days after repots that WWE has placed a large order for Steve Austin merchandise and Austin will be returning to WWE TV soon.

Based on what we’re hearing, the buzz in WWE is that Austin is gearing up to have a big role with the company in 2015.

Steve Austin Talks About Wrestlers Dealing With Fans Inside & Outside The Ring

The following are highlights of WWE Hall Of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin talking about wrestlers facing physical issues with fans inside and outside of the ring during his appearance on the Bro Bible podcast.

On how wrestlers would handle fans jumping into the ring during his days in the business:

“It’s a whole different ballgame these days. In the old days, if a fan stepped into the squared circle, he was considered fair game. Normally, the heel took care of the business at hand, because the babyface was the guy the crowd was supposed to be cheering for but both guys in the ring would have to access the risk. Back in the old days, when wrestlers had genuine heat with fans, you never knew what guys were walking into the ring with.”

On wrestlers having to deal with fights outside of the ring:

“As a Hollywood Blonde, Brian Pillman and I had some pretty good heat, but it was well past the time in our industry where you had to worry about a fan trying something on the way back to the dressing room. I’ve heard stories of guys having to fight their way back to the locker room and getting stuck with knives or people try to cut them back when wrestling was quote, unquote real.

I’ve never personally had any altercations with fans in an arena or out in public. The worst I’d get was maybe some drunk guy at a bar wanted to arm wrestle but I’d usually just defuse the situation with a “hey man let me buy you a beer” and things would blow over.

Thankfully, but almost regretfully, none of those old “drunk guy at a bar” ever transcended into an altercation with me just because a wrestler always wants one old war story to tell.”

  • The Authority: Adapt or Perish

For the past year, the Authority has dominated WWE storylines. They have been involved in every WWE World Heavyweight Championship feud along the way, often influencing the outcomes of important matches.

Along the way, Triple H started using the phrase, “Adapt or Perish” to describe his stable Evolution. However, over the past few months, it appears that the Game should apply that same philosophy to the Authority.

Rollins has been one of the bright spots in the Authority storyline over the past few months.

Rollins has been one of the bright spots in the Authority storyline over the past few months.

Indeed, it has been much of the same as of late with the Authority. Other than adding Seth Rollins as a member a few months ago, the group has done literally nothing to change over the past year. This has resulted in too much Corporate Kane, a reliance on six-man tag matches nearly every week on Raw, and an almost identical storyline for any face attempting to challenge the Authority’s, well, authority.

In my opinion, the Authority has gone stale and needs to do something quickly in order to minimize the risk of losing fan interest. One possible solution would be to add new members. This could easily be accomplished by having one of the current members defect from the stable.

The most logical option would be Randy Orton, as they have teased tension between Orton and the Authority, and he’s a far more marketable star than Kane, the other stooge doing the group’s bidding. By having Orton leave the Authority, it could open the door for another young star as well.

Seth Rollins has benefited immensely since joining forces with Triple H and company. He captured the Money in the Bank briefcase, seems to be more confident on the mic with each passing week, and is way over with the fans. The stable could add another future star (perhaps someone from NXT) in an attempt to inject more life into the program.

In all, adding new talent to the Authority could only help, as the current storyline is extremely repetitive and formulaic, with most programs ending after Kane interferes in a match and the Authority beats down an opponent.

Rob Schamberger Teams Up With WWE, “Stone Cold” For “Connor’s Cure” Charity

Marc Kruskol sent along the following …

Famed wrestling artist Rob Schamberger has teamed up with the WWE and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to put an end to pediatric brain and spinal cancer! Schamberger has donated his painting of Stone Cold, which he painted live in August at SummerSlam, to be auctioned by WWE with 100% of the net proceeds going to The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, for the benefit of Connor’s Cure. Named after Connor ‘The Crusher’ Michalek, an 8 year-old boy who passed away from Medulloblastoma, a rare tumor that affects the brain and spinal cord. Donations to Connor’s Cure will provide funds for pediatric brain and spinal cancer research, and medical care for children and their families.

On his painting being included in the auction, Schamberger says, “I couldn’t be more proud and humbled to be a part of such an amazing cause. Connor 3:16 says we’re going to whoop cancer’s ass!” Bidding closes on Tuesday, September 30th so go now to auction.wwe.com (http://auction.wwe.com/iSynApp/auctionDisplay.action?auctionId=350445) to bid on this and the many other historic pieces of memorabilia available for this worthy cause!

Steve Austin Expected To Return To WWE Television In The Near Future

As noted last week, WWE recently ramped up production of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin merchandise.

The latest buzz behind the scenes is that Steve Austin and WWE “working together” again in some capacity will in fact lead to a television return for the Hall of Famer.

Another reason many are expecting an Austin return to WWE TV is due to the fact that the company promoted his podcast on RAW, something that they didn’t do for Chris Jericho even when Triple H was a guest on his show.

Many are taking the fact that WWE Hall Of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is talking about training hard right now as a sign that he is getting ready to work a comeback match at WrestleMania.

  • Steve Austin Working With WWE Again?

There is some speculation that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is working together with WWE in some capacity.

As seen on last night’s WWE RAW, WWE advertised this week’s episode of the Steve Austin Show podcast (featuring Kevin Nash), the first time WWE has plugged Austin’s podcast since it launched back in April 2013.

Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com is now reporting that WWE is about to ramp up production of new Steve Austin t-shirts and other merchandise.

This story is still developing, but it will be interesting to see what comes of it. Austin most recently appeared for WWE back at WrestleMania XXX in a memorable opening segment with Hulk Hogan and The Rock. He was rumored to be in talks with WWE about a potential relaunch of Tough Enough on the WWE Network, but that project was put on hold due to budget cuts.

WWE Promotes Nash On Austin’s Podcast, RAW Error, Final SD! Rating

    – During Monday’s WWE Night Of Champions “go-home” edition of RAW, the commentary team of Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and JBL promoted the “Steve Austin Show” podcast, noting that Kevin Nash will be on his show this week. They actually messed up the plug, however, as they sent fans to “Podcast.com,” when it’s actually PodcastOne.com.

    – The Friday, September 12th edition of WWE SmackDown scored a final cable rating of 1.95, according to Nielsen Media Research. That marks a decrease compared to the previous week’s show, which delivered a final rating of 2.02. The show averaged 2.821 million viewers last Friday, also down from the average of 2.758 million that tuned in the week before.

  • 10 Most Influential Superstars in WWE History (Part 2/2)

As promised, here is the second half of the list.

    5. Goldust

    Goldust_Attitude

Many fans incorrectly identify the rise of Stone Cold Steve Austin as the beginning of the Attitude Era – the most profitable period in WWE history. However, there was someone who came along and changed the game long before Austin would cut his Austin 3:16 promo on Jake Roberts. That person was the man known simply as Goldust.

The son of the “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Dustin Runnels had shifted back and forth between the WWE and rival WCW during the early 90s before ultimately signing with the WWE in 1995 as Goldust. The character was sexually suggestive, frequently engaged in behavior that was considered homoerotic, and was unlike anything the WWE Universe had ever seen.

Goldust was a pioneer in pushing the WWE away from the traditional face/heel booking that the company had relied upon for years in favor of a product that was appealing to adults and featured morally ambiguous characters. Had the product not shifted back to a PG rating, Goldust would be even higher on this list, but as it stands, he is still one of the most important superstars in company history.

10 Most Influential Superstars in WWE History (Part 1/2)

Many superstars have come and gone in the WWE. Some left a lasting impact that will be remembered for years to come (think Hulk Hogan), while others were forgotten almost as quickly as they arrived (someone like Duke “The Dumpster” Droese would feel right at home in this category).

In order to be considered influential, certain standards must be met. Most importantly, the superstar must have made a lasting impact on the history of the WWE, which involves more than simply competing in entertaining matches.

Instead, any superstar on the list will have made a significant impact on the business, whether that be changing the way athletes compete, engaging in storylines that had a drastic influence on the history of the company, or working to pave the way for future generations of superstars.

While different superstars were influential for contrasting reasons, the fact remains that each made significant contributions and altered the course of WWE history. For this reason, all ten superstars on the list should be commended for their work, because each one ultimately helped to establish the WWE as the premiere sports entertainment company in the world.

Without further ado, here are the ten most influential superstars in WWE history.
