Austin Interview: Movies, WWE Return, Eddie & More

WWE Hall of Famer & former WWE Champion “Stone Cold” Steve Austin was one of the featured guests on this week’s live edition (11/15/10) of the award-winning Monday Night Mayhem radio show.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin Discusses The Latest On The Rumors Of His WWE Return, His Commitment To The Movie Industry Since Leaving World Wrestling Entertainment, The Release Of “Hunt To Kill,” How Certain Aspects Of The Film Mirror What He Has Gone Through In His Personal Life, A Sneak Preview Of His Newest Picture (“Hangar 14”), Who He Feels Inspired The “Stone Cold” Promos The Most, Being “Handpicked” By “The Hitman” For Bret Hart’s Comeback Match At The 1996 Survivor Series, & The Legacy Of Eddie Guerrer.

Interview highlights courtesy of The Mayhem’s official correspondent, Paterson from New Jersey:

How he was approached to appear in Hunt to Kill & how certain aspects of the film mirror what he has gone through in his personal life: “We were doing an outdoor scene for another movie, and we were looking around. It was a rainforest similar to one we shot ‘Hunt to Kill’ in, and my manager says ‘Hey man, this could be your next movie. We’ll call it ‘Hunt to Kill,’ and we just came up with the title right there. We hired a writer to write it. Obviously, it was tailored to me. I grew up hunting, fishing, riding ATV’s, shooting bows and all the weapons, and it’s just what I do. So we wrote the story around me. I am in my element. As far as my relationship with my daughter in the movie, I’m trying raise her as a single father, and she really doesn’t know me, and I really don’t know her. From my 15 years on the road, I’ve kind of been in a similar situation with my two daughters. Sometimes I’ve been gone for too long, so I kind of drew from that, and that was one of things enjoyed about the movie.”

His commitment to movies since making the transition from World Wrestling Entertainment: “I’m having fun, and I’m getting a chance to be more selective with the material. Sometimes when you’re just looking for a start, you’re just looking for any kind of vehicle to jump in. Now I can be picky and choosy about what I jump in and have more control over what I do. Back in the day when I jumped in that business I was greener than the grass, and it was a lot of work and dedication. I turned into a hell of an in-ring performer and sold a lot of tickets. My goal in anything I’ve ever done, from my athletic background in high school trying to be the best athlete that I can be, you’ve got to apply yourself. I don’t care what you’re doing, if you’re going to do something, you want to be the absolute best that you can be. With that being said, I’m not trying to be Daniel Day Lewis or Marlon Brando, but I’m damn sure trying to be the best actor that I can be and find the combination of what works for me as far as success in the movie industry.”

What is was like being “handpicked” by Bret “The Hitman” Hart for his comeback match at the 1996 Survivor Series at Madison Square Garden & why the build-up and the match itself ranks so highly on his personal list of his favorite matches of all-time: “That’s probably my #3 favorite match of all-time, behind WrestleMania 13 with Bret Hart and X-Seven with The Rock, which was absolutely tremendous. That Survivor Series match and the promos leading up to it, I was basically handpicked by Bret for him to make his comeback after some kind of treatment on his knee. He was making his comeback. I was starting to gather a lot of momentum as ‘Stone Cold,’ but still in the heel vain. It was an old-school wrestling match. I watched that match probably three months ago doing cardio in my garage. The ring was mic’d different. Madison Square Garden has that aurora, that feeling about it, and that atmosphere. That was a bad-ass match, and I think very highly of that match, and it was just that, a wrestling match.”

What he remembers the most about working with/being around Eddie Guerrero & what he feels Guerrero’s legacy will be in the business: “I was always in awe of everything that Eddie did. I could watch a match with a normal wrestling fan, and because I’ve been in the business so long and because what I lived, and breathed, and understand about the business, I could look at the little things that Eddie did, and just some of his body language, and the charisma he had in the ring. I’m a huge Stevie Ray Vaughn fan, and when you watch and listen to Vaughn play the guitar, he is that instrument, and it plays through his heart. He’s just endless and flowless. He never stops creating, and to me, that’s what Eddie Guerrero was in the ring. He just never stopped, and everything came so natural to him. When he was in a ring, it seemed like that was when he was at his happiest. He was a true bad-ass hand in the ring and a superstar. I’ve got a ton of respect for Eddie Guerrero, and he is on my list of all-time most gifted and talented workers that ever got in the ring.”

After the rumors have been swirling for the past several weeks of Steve returning to the WWE for a comeback/final match, along with him potentially guest starring on a forthcoming edition of Monday Night RAW, what does this message & demand by the fans tell Steve: “First of all, I heard the rumors that I was going to be in New York, but I know nothing of it, because I plan on being deer hunting at my ranch in South Texas. I will say this: I’m proud of my wrestling career. Wrestling is what I wanted to do with my life. I love the industry back then, and I still do today. Above and beyond that, I love my wrestling fans, and I broke and busted my ass to put on a good product that they could enjoy, and that’s what I enjoyed doing. My style was what I lived, and thrived, and loved doing. If it wasn’t for my wrestling background, I wouldn’t be where I am today and had the opportunities that I’ve had. Those are rumors. I can’t say that it’s true, because like I said, I’m going to go make a movie, go deer hunting, and then go make another movie. I wish I had some kind of answers to that. I think people want to see real hardcore entertainment and stop the sugar coating. I’m not saying I’m the only one that can do it, because there are a lot of guys that can do it, but it doesn’t need to be so candy coated.”

Steve Austin & Jim Ross Rip WWE’s “Top 50 Superstars” List

One of the big topics of discussion over the weekend is WWE’s new “Top 50 Superstars Of All Time” DVD. The list was posted online and has left many longtime fans scratching their heads.

For example, one has to wonder how WWE can seriously rank Rey Mysterio at #9 ahead of Hulk Hogan, who barely made the Top 25 at #23.

WWE Hall of Famers Steve Austin, who was ranked #3, and Jim Ross went on Twitter and spoke about the curious rankings.

Steve Austin wrote, “i dont know the criteria for the WWE top 50 list…but i disagree with 85% of it.”

Jim Ross said: “Hogan & Rock not being in top 10 n wwe top 50 dvd shocked me. Is shock 2 strong a word? Everyones entitled 2 their opinion.”

The Rock actually was listed at #5, and Jim Ross later corrected himself:

“My bad on Rock’s lofty rtg on wwe’s top 50 dvd. Hulk should have been higher but argument can b made 4 others too. I liked the dvd. Buy it.”.

In this week’s SEScoops.com “Sound Off” audio show, our own Solomonster shared his thoughts on WWE’s Top 50 list – you should definitely check that out below:

Steve Austin Praises Reaction, Discusses WWE Return Rumors

WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin spoke with CraveOnline.com to promote his new latest movie, Hunt to Kill.

Regarding rumors that he is hosting an episode of Raw next month, he says he has no knowledge of the matter.

“Man, I haven’t talked with anybody about that,” he replied. “I mean, I’ve been hearing rumors all of a sudden that I’m supposed to appear on Raw or something or other, or a Wrestlemania XXVII thing, and I don’t know anything about it. I haven’t talked with anybody from the WWE. On the 10th of November I’m fixed to head to Vancouver to start another movie, so I don’t think it’s going to happen, and I haven’t had talks of anything happening either.

“Stone Cold” praised TNA Wrestling’s pseudo shoot program, ReACTION, noting his enjoyment for its rawness.

“I watch their Reaction show, and I like the shoot style promos they do on that show. It’s different, it’s not so pre-fabricated, you know, they’re shoot promos and I enjoy that. They feel raw, they feel real.

“Well you know, it goes back to what it was before. That’s the ability to learn to cut a promo and you’re coming from your heart, your guts, your brain. There’s that story you’ve got to tell, but promos have to be real, they can’t be fabricated. You have to believe in them. When you’re not trying to memorize something, you can believe what you’re saying. That’s the fashion that I cut mine as Stone Cold. I believed every word I said 110%. That’s just the way it was.”

JR Blog: Austin Hosting RAW? Lita’s Surprise Return

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Steve Austin Not Hosting RAW? “To the best of my knowledge, Steve Austin has not been officially scheduled to appear on an upcoming Raw as has been reported elsewhere. Steve is preparing to film another movie in Vancouver soon that will take him into December. At that time I assume he will head to his Texas ranch for some R&R and to celebrate the holidays. Jan and I hope to visit Steve and his crew at the Broken Skull Ranch in late December or early January. BTW Steve’s latest movie ‘Hunt to Kill’ is out next week on DVD and it’s a cool, kick ass movie that I really enjoyed. I think that you will too especially if you like to see Stone Cold kick the bad guy’s butt. Good storyline/script that makes for some stout action/adventure.”

Lita Appearing On RAW: “Enjoyed seeing Lita make her cameo on Raw Monday night. She was one of the all time great Divas in WWE and I can still vividly remember her job interview in my WWE office many years ago. I assume she will not come back to WWE full time but, as a fan of her work, it would be nice to see her back for a short run. I think that the team of Trish & Lita vs. Lay Cool, for example, would be a really nice attraction type bout at WM27. Just an idea.”

Steve Austin Says His Neck Is 100% & Teases One More Match

WWE Hal of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin spoke to the UK Sun newspaper recently to promote his new “Hunt to Kill” DVD and had a lot to say about wrestling. Here are some highlights of what Austin said about:

Watching Wrestling: “I watch all wrestling whenever I can, I watch WWE and I watch TNA. I’ve just always had that passion for the sport. That’s what inspired me to enter the ring in the first place, I watched wrestling avidly as a kid and back then it was guys battering each other in smoke filled arenas and blood flowed freely. And that’s why I still watch WWE and TNA all the time today, it’s entertaining and takes me back.”

His Neck: “My neck was fixed in 2000, I had to leave the ring because of the damage, but in my normal life and movies it’s fine, although wrestling wise I’d be a total mess right now … I’m lucky, you know my neck is 100 per cent these days, I can do my own stunts and fight scenes where I can. I don’t claim to be a tough guy, but I give it a go.”

One More Match: “I never thought I’d say it, but when I’m asked about one more match these days I do tend to say ‘never say never’. So don’t rule it out.”

Foley Comments On WWE Plug, Austin & Keibler On NBC & More

– Mick Foley had the following to say regarding WWE plugging his book Monday night..

“I guess you could call it the plug heard ’round the world. I actually almost missed it when Michael Cole first said my name, and didn’t really catch on until the King followed up on the Cole mention of the new book. Certainly, it was surreal; I don’t think there has ever been an instance of someone on an opposing show getting a shoutout from WWE. I guess there are alot of people speculating as to what Vince’s motives might be. I’m leaning toward the idea that Vince sometimes does things just to be nice, and that the winds must have been blowing in a favorable direction on Monday morning. I think Vince deep down genuinely likes me and respects me and was just trying to do what felt right to him.”

– “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Stacy Keibler will be appearing on NBC’s Chuck on Monday at 8 PM ET. Austin returns as mercenary Hugo Panzer, while Keibler will play the undercover CIA operative Greta. Batista is also set to appear on the show later next month.

Big Change To WWE’s Wellness Policy, Double RAW Taping

– In a move that many are calling long overdue, WWE has officially added the drug carisoprodol (also known as “Soma”) to its Wellness Policy’s list of banned substances. The change has not yet been made on WWE’ss corporate website, but we’re told the talent has been informed of the change.

Soma is a powerful and addictive muscle relaxer that has been used as a recreational drug among pro wrestlers for decades. The drug had previously been allowed if it was prescribed by a doctor, but the new ammendment prohibits WWE talent from taking Somas even if it’s prescribed by a doctor.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross wrote the following about WWE banning the use of Soma among its performers:

“I think that it’s a great idea. Too many wrestlers took/take Somas recreationally much like wrestlers used to smoke weed in the 70’s. Prescription pill abuse is a huge enemy of all wrestlers who abuse them. Pain medicine, Somas, ambien, and xanax are an evil mixture especially when mixed with alcohol and taken in excess.”

– Steve Austin will be appearing at the closing night awards event at the 16th Annual Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival on September 19th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. Austin will be presenting Eric Roberts with a Career Achievement in Acting award.

– Tuesday, November 2nd will be a big night for Linda McMahon as it is election night and she’s trying to become Senator of Connecticut. It just so happens that WWE is taping SmackDown that night in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The Rock, Steve Austin & Goldberg On Hand For UFC 116

After retaining his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Shane Carwin last night at UFC 116, Brock Lesnar was congratulated by former professional wrestling colleagues Steve Austin and Bill Goldberg.

Meanwhile, “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson was pointed out by the announcers during the pay-per-view broadcast, as was Austin. UFC lead announcer Mike Goldberg referred to Austin as “Cold Stone” rather than “Stone Cold,” though he corrected himself later in the evening when mentioning him again.

When Lesnar celebrated his victory in the crowd, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross and former ECW creative director Paul Heyman were shown on-camera sitting near Austin and Goldberg.

Following the pay-per-view broadcast, cameras showed Lesnar embracing Johnson in the locker room as part of his post-fight celebration.

Steve Austin Talks TNA, Wrestling Again, Orton & Jim Ross

Steve Austin appeared on Live Audio Wrestling (The LAW) this past Sunday night to promote his new DVD The Stranger that is available now through Anchor Bay Entertainment. Here are some highlights of the interview with Dan Lovranski of The LAW:

On Jim Ross: “Jim is a very close, personal friend and was very instrumental and a big part of my career and I love the guy but it’s just a case of the WWE wanting to go in a different direction and maybe get younger. The show has changed, it’s a PG rated show so Jim fits into that but the Stone Cold character not so much. That’s just the business and sooner or later your time is up and I guess they figured his time was up. I love Jim Ross and I think he’s the greatest announcer in the history of the business and there’s been a couple of outstanding ones and lots of good ones but I put him at the top of the list and that’s just the wrestling business.”

Comparisons of Randy Orton’s current character to the Stone Cold character: “I guess you can see a parallel and I like Randy. “Cowboy” Bob Orton was one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, I loved what he did in the ring. But when you make that comparison to Stone Cold, that’s a pretty tough comparison if I’m that guy and I think Randy is a great talent in the ring and I love the viper gimmick but that’s a tough comparison.”

On the TNA product: “Yes I do watch TNA as much as I can, just as I do WWE. I have a lot of friends in that promotion and I wish them all well just because it’s another place for guys to work and I’m a pro wrestling fan so I don’t care what brand it is. My blood is in the WWE but I love wrestling in general. You’re running with your older talent there just because you’re trying to go off name value that people can identify with so you can rope them in and try to expose them to some younger talent, they just need to expose them to some more younger talent. Samoa Joe is one of my favorite guys over there he’s kind of got lost in the shuffle, they need to break him back out. They have some talent over there I think their writing is a little lost right now I don’t know whose booking or whose calling the shots they need to bring a little more focus and come around and see what the direction is they are going in and follow up on that and not compete with the WWE or try to be the WWE just be the best TNA you can be.”

Any chances of wrestling another match?: “You may see me in a wrestling ring but I don’t think I’ll be wrestling. I think it’s best to leave well enough alone and let people remember Steve Austin for what he was. Could I go back? I could get another couple of years out of this carcass if I wanted to or if I had to and I could have another match but what’s the point? I have my sights focused on trying to be as good an actor as I can be and go down this road. I love my wrestling fans and wrestling is what put me on the map and I still follow the business to this day but I’m going to leave well enough alone.”

The entire interview is available at here. Catch The LAW each Sunday night at 11pm EST on Sirius 98 Hardcore Sports Radio and online at their website.

Steve Austin Comments On The Big SmackDown *Spoiler*

Warning: This article contains a big *SPOILER* for Friday’s WWE SmackDown

As previously reported, Jack Swagger cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase at Tuesday’s WWE SmackDown tapings to capture the World Heavyweight championship. Jericho had just brawled with Edge in the opening segment of the show and it was revealed that Jericho’s ribs were injured and still taped up from WrestleMania. Swagger’s music hit and he powerbombed Jericho for a quick win.

WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin posted a message on Twitter responding to a fan who asked him about Swagger’s World Heavyweight title win.

Austin sees potential in Jack Swagger, but questions if he’s got the experience to justify being a World Heavyweight champion.

Austin wrote: “sounds too soon to me. the kid does have a bright future though.”

Steve Austin Says He “Absolutely” Has One Match Left In Him

In an interview with the Ottawa Sun, WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin spoke about how WWE has changed since his days as an active superstar and said that he “absolutely” has one more match left in him.

“WWE has changed. It’s a different climate, more of a PG image. They’ve cleaned it up a bit. For me to go back, I have to watch my Ps and Qs. It’s another day and age. They’ve got young superstars to sell.”

When asked whether we’ve seen the last of Stone Cold in the ring, he gave a surprising answer that’s totally different from what Jim Ross has repeatedly stated in his blogs about Austin wrestling a final match.

“Do I have a match left in me? Absolutely. Do I want to do one more? I don’t know. I’m very content with leaving well enough alone. I don’t want to be 90% of what Stone Cold was.”
