Nation Of Domination Reunite At ‘For The Love Of Wrestling’ UK Convention

The Nation of Domination were a force to be reckoned with during the Attitude Era and reunited this past weekend in Manchester, England. The quartet of D’Lo Brown, Mark Henry, The Godfather, and Ron Simmons were all guests at For The Love of Wrestling. On X, the convention’s organizers shared a clip of the group’s entrance.

The group didn’t just make a star-studded entrance, but also fielded questions from fans during a Q&A event. Fans were also able to get autographs and photos from the faction’s individual members, as well as as a group photo alongside the four legendary wrestlers.

As their name suggests, the Nation of Domination dominated during the late 90s, with multiple titles to their name. These include D’Lo holding the European Championship on two occasions while The Rock (who would replace Simmons as the faction’s leader in 1998) would hold the Intercontinental Championship.

The Nation were just some of the legends at For the Love of Wrestling, the largest wrestling fan convention in Europe. Attitude Era fans were also given the chance to meet legends including Sting, Mick Foley, and Lex Luger. For fans of more modern-day talents, Tyler Breeze, JDC (fka Fandango), Ash By Elegance (fka Dana Brooke), Heath Slater, and Raj Dhesi were on hand to sign autographs, take photos, and answer questions.

The Godfather Reflects On Day Of Owen Hart’s Passing

The Godfather says he doesn’t remember much of what happened after Owen Hart’s tragic accident at the 1999 Over The Edge PPV.

The late star was supposed to be lowered down from the rafters through a grapple line for his entrance. Owen was set to challenge the WWE Hall of Famer for the Intercontinental Championship on the show. During the entrance, however, the quick-release mechanism of the grapple line failed and Hart fell to his death.

The Godfather talked about the unfortunate accident during a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet. The former WWE star said that he remembers spending the day with Owen and someone telling him that he fell during his entrance:

“I don’t remember. I remember spending the day with Owen. I remember talking with the girls and then Owen was coming out. I’ve never seen it. But when that happened, I was behind the curtain with the girls going through it. [I said] ‘Don’t worry if you mess up, if you fall, I’ll do this.’

I was telling them that then whoever it was, it might have been Bruce Prichard, I don’t know who was sitting at the table. I know it wasn’t Jim Ross. He goes ‘Owen fell!’ And then I’m like, what? He goes, ‘Owen just fell!’”

It Was A Blur After That: The Godfather

According to the wrestling veteran, he doesn’t remember much of what happened once he saw the body of Owen Hart. Everything after that is a blur to him:

“We were looking at the monitors and then it all went down. I just remembered what Owen looked like when he came through the curtain. And other than that, I don’t [remember].  I called my wife right away and she tells me a lot of things that I said that I don’t remember.

But she tells me you said this and you said that. And then I’m like well, I don’t remember that. So it was a blur after that. I don’t remember how or when I found out that there was no match or what’s going on. I really don’t remember.”

The Godfather also discussed being paired with Road Dogg for a match the next night on Raw and Vince McMahon telling them that they didn’t have to work if they didn’t want to. Both the wrestling stars, however, decided to smoke a joint together and wrestle the match to honor their friend.

The Undertaker also talked about wrestling on the PPV after Hart’s fall earlier this year. He detailed the locker room reaction to the whole incident saying that they were not ready to believe it. You can check out his comments on the matter here.

The Godfather Says Shane McMahon Owns A Cannabis Business, Vince McMahon Is Not Anti-Cannabis

Testing positive for cannabis without a medical prescription is against WWE’s Wellness Policy. Currently, a positive test will result in a talent being fined $2,500. According to comments the Godfather recently made on the Midnight Hustle podcast, however, Vince McMahon is not anti-cannabis and Shane McMahon even owns a cannabis business.

“What you are failing to realize is that’s a big corporation and they answer to a lot of people so if they let people smoke weed, it’s not federally legal and you’re still breaking the law no matter if it’s legal in states,” Godfather said on the show. “If it was up to Vince, Vince would have everybody smoking. Vince is no fool but he has people to answer to and it’s a big company. He just can’t say it’s okay to smoke weed because what happens if you go to a state where it’s not legal? They bring the police in, they test you and there’s a lot of legal things. It ain’t because Vince don’t want to. The second it becomes legal, Vince would be the first one on that wagon.”

Godfather continued to say that Shane McMahon even owns a large cannabis co-op in California.

“I mean Shane owns a [Cannabis] co-op in California. A big co-op. [Vince is] not against weed, he’s a businessman. I’m telling you, I know this 100 percent, he would much rather see people smoke cannabis than all this other stupid sh** if it was up to him, believe me.”

Shane McMahon’s Cannabis Business Ventures

Shane investing in a California-based cannabis co-op is not the first time he’s been involved in the cannabis industry. In 2017, the NY Daily News reported on Shane McMahon’s investment in another cannabis-based company.

According to the report, Shane invested half a million dollars into a cannabis startup in Connecticut. The company was called EnviroGrow. When McMahon went to tour the company’s facilities, however, he found their operations to be “virtually nonexistent”. He filed suit to have his investment refunded. Documents pertaining to Shane’s lawsuit against the company can be found here.

Under the WWE Wellness Policy, testing positive for cannabis does not result in a suspension. It still results in a fine of $2500, however. A WWE talent may receive an exemption provided cannabis is prescribed by a physician, however.

“A WWE Talent may request a Therapeutic Use Exception (“TUE”) for a prohibited drug under the Policy if (i) such use is for a legitimate medical purpose given pursuant to a valid prescription from a licensed and treating physician of the WWE Talent,” WWE’s Wellness Policy reads.

The Godfather On Forgetting To Mention His Wife In HOF Induction Speech

The Godfather was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame back in 2016 but the wrestling veteran made a big mistake during his induction speech when he forgot to mention his wife in it.

The WWE legend will be the next guest on Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions and the company recently released a promo clip for the episode.

The Godfather recalled his induction in the clip released by the company. He talked about the mistake he made and explained how it all happened:

“So, I get up there and I started having fun, and I’m doing my thing. My grandson was there, and it was his birthday. So there was a part where I wanted the whole audience to say happy birthday to him,

And then after that I was going to hit my wife, and how she was the creator and everything, and put her over.” said The Godfather, “Well, the thing with my grandson went so well that I skipped the part with my wife somehow, and I went on to the finish.”

After walking off the stage, the former intercontinental champion asked someone if he had mentioned his wife. He realised the mistake he had made after receiving a negative answer.

The Godfather went on to apologize to his wife mentioning how it’s something he can’t fix. The Broken Skull Sessions episode featuring the WWE legend will be premiering on WWE Network this Sunday.

The Godfather Talks BSK Reunion At Survivor Series

Survivor Series 2020 was billed as the Undertaker’s “Final Farewell” and many legends from the past were there to help celebrate. One of The Undertaker’s longtime friends in the business, “The Godfather” Charles Wright, was amongst them. Godfather spoke to SI.com recently about the reunion Taker’s “Bone Street Krew” had at the show.

“When WWE invited me to the Survivor Series tribute for Mark, I texted him right away and said, ‘Let’s do a BSK reunion,’” said Wright. “We paid homage to Mark Calaway and the phenom that he created with The Undertaker.”

The reunion took place Saturday night before the Survivor Series. No food was served, only whiskey and beer. Other attendees included Savio Vega, Rikishi, Phineas Godwinn, and Mark Henry.

“For that one night, the past came back to life,” Wright continued. “If you didn’t know any better, it felt like it was 20 years ago. We told stories, we hugged, we cried—and we put Timmy White to bed, just like we used to back in the day.”

Godfather continued to talk about what Taker did for others during his career.

“Mark is honest, he respects the business and he never forgets about his friends,” said Wright. “He changed the business, especially for big men. He’s one of a kind.”

The Godfather Agrees With Fan Criticism About Undertaker’s “Final Farewell”

The Godfather responded to some fans who were critical of what WWE did with The Undertaker’s Final Farewell at Sunday’s pay-per-view event.

Before Taker came out for his promo, WWE brought out Godfather and several past and present wrestlers with full entrances only to have them leave the ring.

A fan commented on a photo of Taker and Godfather on Instagram where the person wrote, The whole ‘Farewell’ was pretty boring. You guys all came to the ring…for what?” Godfather responded, “right.”

One fan questioned why WWE brought everyone in only to have them say nothing. Godfather wrote back, “could’ve been written better.”

Another fan took shots at WWE creative and The ThunderDome. Godfather wrote back, “Well said. And you right the night before was epic.”

The fan responded by noting that the night before Survivor Series where they all reunited was what really matters. Godfather agreed, “Thats the most important.”

Along with Godfather, Shane McMahon, Big Show, JBL, Jeff Hardy (who had Taker’s symbol painted on his face), Mick Foley, The Godwinns, Savio Vega, Rikishi, Kevin Nash, Booker T, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Triple H, and Kane were part of the segment.

Vince McMahon did the introduction for Taker.

The Godfather On Vince McMahon’s Views On Marijuana

The Godfather is one of the veteran WWE wrestlers who is open about his use of marijuana during his time in the wrestling business and he doesn’t mind talking about it.

The WWE Hall Of Famer recently had an interview with WrestlingInc, where he talked about things like his match at the Brawl For All, what he is doing now and more.

During the interview, the Godfather was asked about Vince McMahon’s views on marijuana. Replying to it, the WWE veteran said that Vince is ‘up on the times’ and claimed that the Boss would not have a problem supporting it if it was legal:

“[Laughs] Well, I’m not gonna go that far but Vince is up on the times. If cannabis were to become legal, then he would have no problem supporting it. He supported it when I was there, I’ve never smoked with Vince or seen Vince smoke.”

The Godfather was also asked if smoking weed was a common thing backstage in WWE when he was there and the former Intercontinental Champion said that there were very few guys who smoked at the time.

He went to reveal that he would try to get many people to smoke while he was there and claimed that he was never fined for smoking during his WWE career. You can check out his full interview at this link.

The Godfather Reflects On His Gimmick, Nation Of Domination, Being Inducted Into WWE Hall Of Fame

WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather was a recent guest on Jordan Garber NOW, where he opened up about how his Godfather gimmick came to be. He also reflected on his tenure with the Nation of Domination and his subsequent induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

“It was fun because it was just me being me,” he explained about the Godfather character. “Lots of guys came out with girls but they didn’t know what to do with them. I knew what the people wanted, and I knew what to do with the girls working at topless clubs all my life basically. I just put my personality and my flavour out there which created the “Pimpin’ ain’t easy thing” and that really took off.

Godfather In Nation Of Domination & Hall Of Fame Induction

Looking back on his time in the Nation of Domination, The Godfather shared how it was a demanding stable to be a part of. He stressed the significance of the stable and how it provided black Superstars with an opportunity to come together in a major way.

Despite having fun with it at the time, he reflected on how “[…] you just look back and say wow… It was a lot bigger than I thought it was and it was a lot bigger than I took it at the time.”

Godfather then addressed his Hall of Fame induction in 2016. He called it a highlight of his career—one that meant more to him than anything besides the birth of his children and his marriage. For him, the recognition was “one of the biggest accomplishments of my life” as he never thought he would be considered.

WWE Hall Of Famer Reveals Original Plan For NWO’s Bodyguard

While the NWO had become a crowded faction already, the WCW Officials decided to announce Vincent, popularly known as Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard Virgil from WWE, as the head of security for the faction during an episode of Nitro in 1996.

However, during a recent episode of Photo Shoot on WWE Network, Hall Of Famer The Godfather revealed the original plans for the head of security/bodyguard position.

According to the Godfather, the original plans were for him to fulfill this position but then the company officials stopped returning his call and one day he saw Vincent playing the role originally intended for him:

“My [WWE] contract was coming up, and I was in negotiations with WCW coming into the nWo as their bodyguard. And we had arranged a verbal contract, and then, I didn’t hear from them, they weren’t returning my calls. And then I’m watching the show one day, and I see Virgil come out as the bodyguard of the nWo.

Continuing on the topic, the former WCW Star explained that the company probably tried to save money by putting Virgil on the position as he was already a known bodyguard.

The Godfather then added that he is not mad at Virgil for taking the role because ‘Virgil is Virgil’. You can check out a promo of the Photo Shoot episode featuring the Hall Of Famer below:

The Godfather Joining The WWE Hall Of Fame

On Monday, Jonathan Snowden of Bleacher Report confirmed that The Godfather (Charles Wright) will be joining the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016. Wright spoke to Bleacher Report about the news and revealed the origin of the Godfather character.

“I told Rock one day ‘when you address me in the ring, call me the Godfather.’ He was like ‘what?’ And I said ‘just do it.’ And I was called the Godfather from that point on. And I started slowly developing that character. It got some legs underneath it and it took off.

“You could actually feel the breathe from 18,000 people as they repeated [his catch phrase Pimpin’ Aint Easy]. It was crazy. Vince (McMahon) told me ‘Charles, you ought to be paying me.’ And you know what? He was right. That was the best thing to ever happen to me.

He went on to say that of al the gimmicks he’s had in wrestling (including Papa Shango and Kama), The Godfather is the closest to his actual personality. “That’s my personality, that’s my silliness. That’s my colorfulness. Those are my clothes. I am the Godfather. That’s just Charles Wright playing Charles Wright and being called the Godfather.” Wright will be inducted by JBL and Ron Simmons.

MAJOR WWE Battleground *SPOILERS* + HUGE News For Monday’s RAW!

The Godfather Discusses How He Lost A Spot In The nWo, Papa Shango Return Being Nixed, The Rock In The NOD

Charles Wright, more famously known as The Godfather and Papa Shango, recently spoke to IMETAWrestler.com on a slew topics concerning his career. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

On the Papa Shango character: “I used to read books on voodoo, in fact I built an entire voodoo library. Everything I said in my promos was real and legit. All the props were from voodoo stores. It was totally authentic. The effects guys worked with the staffs and sticks so that they all did something different. I had a bunch of them – some would shoot sparks, others had smoke and lights that came out of them.”

How Sid messed up the character: “Papa Shango was supposed to last much longer in the main event but Sid f—ed it up. It was supposed to be Sid and Warrior headlining SummerSlam [1992], but Sid didn’t want to do it and he quit. He had his own issues, he said Vince had brought him in under the promise of replacing Hogan as the top babyface and it wasn’t going the way it was supposed to. So Papa Shango was fed to Warrior instead. The problem was, with a character like Papa Shango, once the losses piled up, the character lost a lot of that mystique and invincibility, and it was all downhill fast from there.”

Papa Shango returning in 1997 but replaced by Kane: “A lot of people don’t know this, but Papa Shango was going to return in 1997. It was going to be a more gritty, realistic version with a mask instead of paint. They created the costume and the new entrance. But what happened was, the decision was then made to do Kane. I guess they felt there wasn’t enough room for two dark, supernatural characters, and so I became Kama Mustafa and they put me in The Nation. I’ve still got some 8×10 promos of me in the new mask and gear.”

Why Vince put The Rock in The Nation: “The Rock was put into The Nation to protect him. Vince had big plans for The Rock from day one and was worried that he had been getting bad advice from the wrong people. Some jealous dudes had been getting into his ear. So Vince put Rock in the Nation so he could benefit from the guidance of Ron [Simmons] and myself. It was the same thing with Mark Henry. Mark was a big long term investment that was getting some bad advice, learning some bad habits, and so Vince put him under myself and Ron for guidance. Both those guys were struggling.”

Vince’s opinion of The Godfather: “Vince loved the gimmick. Loved it. He used to go to bat for me so many times – fighting the networks, fighting the executives. He did everything he could to keep the character as a central part of the show. Vince used to come to me and say, “Charles – he always called me Charles – you’re having too much fun out there. You should be paying me!” And that didn’t surprise me – Vince is the biggest pimp of them all!”

On the Attitude Era: “I got away with talking about weed so openly on TV because the network executives had no idea what I was saying. They didn’t understand the slang. They had no idea what a “fatty” or a “blunt” was, so I was able to say all this stuff and they had no clue. My friend in Cypress Hill said he was amazed at the shit I got away with.”

On almost joining WCW and the nWo: “I almost went to WCW to be Hogan’s enforcer in the nWo. I named my price, the contract was being drawn up, and then at the last minute, I got a call saying the contract was being retracted and there was no longer an offer for me. I was stunned, man, just stunned. I asked why, and it turned out that Virgil offered to do it for a third of the price because he wanted to be back on TV so bad. That dumb motherf—er cost us both.”
