Kevin Nash: The Kliq Wasn’t A Faction, We Were..

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently shared his thoughts on The Kliq and explained why it wasn’t an on-screen faction.

The Kliq remains to be one of the most infamous backstage groups in wrestling history. Back in the 90s, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman formed the group and were known for allegedly using their backstage influence to succeed in WWE. However, the group never competed inside the ring. Nash and Hall became a successful tag team, while Michaels and Triple H also tasted success. However, they did not wrestle as a stable.

Speaking on his Kliq This podcast, Kevin Nash was asked whether he would consider The Kliq a faction. Here is what he explained:

“We never wrestled together. It was a backstage political group. I’d say we were a bunch of cutthroat mother****ers that held a lot of people back. See, I said that with a straight face, and people will buy that. ‘He even said it.’

No, it was five guys that loved the business and had very like psychology, and if you didn’t, we’d beat it into you.”

In November last year, Kevin Nash canceled a couple of Meet & Greet appearances for MCW Pro Wrestling. The Maryland-based indie wrestling promotion shared a message from Nash on social media. Nash had revealed that he was dealing with herniated discs in his back. He further said that he had been in therapy and working with doctors.

Bret Hart Says He Was Offered Leadership Of The Kliq – Group Members Deny Claim

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart recently appeared on Inside The Ropes as part of their live tour, where he had a Q&A session. In the session, Hart claimed that he was once offered the leadership of The Kliq – the backstage group – but the claim was shut down by Kliq members Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

The Kliq was a powerful backstage group in the WWE during the mid-1990s which consisted of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Sean Waltman. They were known to wield an immense amount of power and influence within the company. It is known that Hart didn’t really get along with most of the members of the group.

Hart stated that he was offered the head spot for the group, but members Kevin Nash and Scott Hall claim that this never happened. Nash wrote, “F–king news to me. I was the only one he got along with.” And Hall just replied with a “WRONG” to Hart’s claims.

Sean Waltman also joined the conversation and gave some info.

The next night, Hart responded to Nash and said that he stands by his words.

“It was Scott Hall, Shawn Michaels, and Kevin Nash that approached me in Germany about being the head of the Kliq. That we would all take control of the top matches and we would decide who would work with who, and we would take control of the whole company.”

Bret also added that the Kliq’s plan was to control all the championship titles in the company. Shawn Michaels would only wrestle Sean Waltman and his other friends, and the titles would only revolve around the Kliq and its associates. The plan was to only wrestle with each other while the rest of the roster would stay back in the locker room.

“I don’t wanna be part of anything like that. That’s not fair to other wrestlers,” Bret explained.

“What I said last night in Belfast is absolutely true. Kevin Nash can go to hell.”

Video: Sean Waltman On The Kliq’s Early Impression Of Triple H, Why They Wanted Him

https://youtu.be/ZvkPG1oUAb0

Former WWE Superstar and member of The Kliq, Sean “X-Pac” Waltman, recently appeared as a guest on WrestleTalk TV. In the latest clip released from the interview, which is featured above, Waltman talks about The Kliq’s initial impression of Triple H when he first came to WWE. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

According to Waltman, The Kliq knew Triple H was destined for greatness. He offered the following comments regarding HHH’s early days in WWE.

“Obviously we didn’t predict exactly what would (happen), but immediately it was like, ‘let’s gobble him up.’ He was riding with Killer Kowalski every night, who was his teacher. He was trying to be cool to Walter (Kowalski). We were like, ‘you gotta drop Walter, you’re coming with us.’ We needed a designated driver anyway.”

While the group might have enjoyed the fact that he could be a designated driver, Waltman admitted that they saw a number of positive qualities in Triple H straight out of the gate.

“Level-headed, focused. His determination, drive. His learning curve, his aptitude. When he first got there, he was still the student, but the way he soaked up all the knowledge and got better, it was really light years ahead of how most people do it.”

Although it was initially reported that the new WWE DVD and Blu-ray set on “The Kliq” would include a special reunion show, that appears to no longer be the case.

According to WrestlingDVDNews.com, the DVD, which will focus on the behind-the-scenes “faction” consisting of Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Triple H and Sean Waltman, will feature a documentary with a compilation of matches and segments, however the reunion show that was originally planned has been canceled.

Mani Mohtadi, the fan who filmed the infamous “Curtain Call” incident at Madison Square Garden in 1996, noted on Twitter that he was interviewed for the documentary portion of the set.

Update On Plans For A Kliq Reunion: WWE Network Special, DVD/Blu-ray Set

  • Kevin Nash Speaks On nWo & D-X, Hulk Hogan’s Heel Turn, The Kliq, Cena & More

The following are highlights of a new Miami Herald interview with Kevin Nash:

Hulk Hogan’s nWo heel turn and heels today: “[Hulk] was watching the show, and he saw the momentum really shifting. He saw Scott and I as heel personas were perceived as being cool. He thought if there was a time to switch, it was now, because he could see the momentum going with Scott and I. So when he jumped, it was a shock, but it was a tsunami that pushed the thing for almost three years. It’s so hard. You look at John Cena. He plays the guy in the white cowboy hat. Our society has gone with the anti-heroes probably since Brandon Lee in ‘The Crow.’ Times have changed. It’s no longer waving the flag as much as it was. There’s a lot of disgruntled people in society. When you look at the demographic, you ask, ‘Where’s the money at?’ Well, the money’s in this kind of tweener guy — a bad guy with a cool persona. One thing about Hulk. If he smells dollar signs. it doesn’t take him long to make a decision. He saw the way it was going and made the decision.”

The nWo and DX in WCW and WWE: “They both had members of the Kliq. DX is what really made Triple H. He was playing the blue blood, and then Triple H went away from that persona and kind of took over DX, and that’s when Paul Levesque got to be himself. That’s when I think he really took off because he’s got an incredible sense of humor, a really fun loving guy. They kind of took our [nWo] formula. They [DX] were younger guys, and they made it a little hipper. Anytime WWE produces anything it’s going to be produced better.”

  • WWE Interviews The Kliq About Infamous MSG Curtain Call Incident

The official WWE website recently interviewed all of the members of the infamous “Kliq” about the “Curtain Call” incident at Madison Square Garden in 1996. Below are some highlights of the interview.

WWE.COM: Did you guys plan The Curtain Call ahead of time or did it just kind of happen that night?

SHAWN MICHAELS: It was talked about in Europe then it was never talked about again. We had done a European tour, then we came back and had this last run. For us, not that we needed a reason to celebrate something, but everything was the last time we’ll be doing this, the last time we’ll be doing that.

KEVIN NASH: This may be the last time we’re in a Lumina van! We should really drink tonight.

    [Laughter.]

MICHAELS: Then, that night, as best as I can recall, it was Hunter coming up and going, “Hey, are we doing that thing we talked about?” I don’t think anybody remembered it.

NASH: I walked in and talked to Vince and Pat [Patterson]! You [points to Michaels] were with me and he said it was fine and we were supposed to go to [New York City steakhouse] Smith & Wollensky afterwards. And it just turned into a thing …

WWE.COM: Before we get into the fallout, let’s talk about the incident itself. What do you remember about that moment at the end of the night?

SCOTT HALL: I remember standing in the ring and we’re all there together. It was unheard of, but the people appreciated it. I remember looking at Kev, we’re all hugging and I remember thinking we all made it.

NASH: I remember — and I think we may have even said it in the ring that night — that we weren’t disbanding The Kliq.

MICHAELS: We were taking over the business.

NASH: We’re going to go down south and take over Ford Motor Company. You guys run GM and we’ll run the automobile industry.

MICHAELS: I remember Vince came up to me after and said, “Did that mean a lot to you?” I said, “Yes it did.” “Then it meant a lot to me.” And he was fine. It was fine that night.
