The Rock Comments On Hulk Hogan’s Racism Controversy

While promoting the HBO dramedy series Ballers at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills, California on Thursday, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was asked about Hulk Hogan (real name Terry Bollea), whose termination from WWE last week coincided with the publication by the National Enquirer and Radar Online of racist remarks allegedly made by the wrestling legend on a leaked sex tape.

“I was pretty disappointed with what I heard, like all of us, by the way,” said Johnson. “I’ve known Terry for a lot of years, my dad helped train him in Florida in the ’70s when he was breaking into the business. My uncles helped train him too as well. I have not known the man to be racist.”

Johnson adds that while there’s no justification for what Hogan said, he believes everyone has “talked trash,” especially in private.

“It’s funny, it’s one of those things where—and not justifying what he said—we’ve all talked trash, especially in private,” said Johnson. “He said what he said, and he’s paying the price.”

Jim Ross Blog: Tonight’s RAW, Hulk Hogan Controversy, The Rock’s HBO Show

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated his official blog on Monday with his latest thoughts and opinions on a number of topics. Below are some of the highlights:

On the Hulk Hogan controversy: “Hulk Hogan remains in the news and is likely to continue to do so until another celebrity story breaks. Hulk arguably would be helped if he laid low on Twitter for a few weeks. Hopefully Hulk has retained PR professionals, a sensitivity training expert and he decides to stop trying to rehabilitate his image on social media at least for the time being. I am a big believer in forgiveness and have no reason to believe that Hogan can’t or won’t be forgiven in time if he goes about it in a sincere, thought out manner. Even if some believe that Hulk did nothing wrong, his public image, of which he earns a living, has taking the big leg drop and it needs rehabilitated.

In my years of dealing with Hogan I never knew of him being a racist or having racist behavior. I can’t read his mind or look into his soul but can only respond to what I’ve personally witnessed and that is I would never earmark him as being racist based on my interactions with him.

No matter how one comments on this hot button issue, many will disagree. That’s fine as long as the dialog remains civil which is often times impossible to achieve on social media platforms such as Twitter.”

On tonight’s RAW: “OKC hosts RAW tonight on the night over the years that Ol JR usually had a long evening at the office but not tonight as I will be interviewing Patrick Clark about being shockingly eliminated off Tough Enough last week for the Ross Report that drops tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 9 pm ET on podcastone.com, iTunes and here on the homepage of our website. Should be some compelling stuff.”

On The Rock’s new HBO show: “Loved @ShoRayDonovan, @BallersHBO and @TrueDetective Sunday night as I watched each episode twice. Very proud of the production and performance of my friend @TheRock on Ballers. Ballers reminds me a bit of some of the wrestlers during the Monday Night Wars who were making silly money during that time and thought that it would never end and now are suffering the consequences. Hopefully, Ballers will be a wake up call to those athletes (NFL. NBA. etc) and entertainment performers who feel bullet proof and that the Golden Goose will live forever.”

Dr. Tom Prichard On Seth Rollins, What He Taught The Rock, And More

Earlier this month, former WWE trainer Dr. Tom Prichard appeared on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling and spoke about a number of topics.

The former tag team champion spoke about Seth Rollins being the future of the WWE, what he taught The Rock, what made things easy in his own matches, and much more.

If you want to check out the interview in full, you can do so at this link, you can also check out highlights from the podcast below:

On why Seth Rollins was chosen as “The Future of the WWE”:

Rollins had that cocksure-ness, he knew he was good, and he was good, he was great. He and Ambrose had their angle in FCW, that was our top angle up until they went to the Performance Center. You knew that Roman Reigns was going to be great because he had the stock, he came from the stock they wanted.

Now, the way it turned out, once again, you have to peel back the layers and look at the business end of things, how does Seth Rollins get in that position? Seth’s a smart guy, Ambrose is a smart guy but I don’t know if he is as good a politician as Seth Rollins is, and that’s not taking anything away from Seth but you have to know how to play the game and you have to know who is running the game up there.

Seth got in with the right people and he has talent and he had everything going for him. Ambrose, I thought was very talented but there were some in FCW who didn’t think he had the look or the talent to be a top guy.

They were high on Reigns from the start because he had the family background, he had everything going for him, Ambrose and Rollins were going to be bit players in FCW that was the take on them but as time went on and other factors came into play, The Shield came about and they fractioned off and they became.

On what he was able to teach The Rock:

I don’t know that I was able to teach him that much. He came in August and debuted in October and had been in Memphis for a year and we just trained and worked out at that time with Achim (Brakkus) and Mark Henry.

He was a young kid, a great guy, had the Chia Pet haircut and you knew he had talent but once again you couldn’t tell, no one could tell at that time that he was going to be as big as he is today, but he had personality. To go over his finish, I gave him the shoulder-breaker, well, that was terrible.

I worked some of his first matches on the road and worked with him in the warehouse in the ring on a daily basis. He had that charisma, he had that personality but once again, you looked at him and he was this smiling, good looking kid with a Chia Pet haircut coming out and wanting everybody to cheer him and it just didn’t work.

People were revolting against that typical baby-face guy from back then and it was to his advantage because he knew and he understood once it was explained to him, once he got the feel of it, once he got to be who he really is, it was that smart-Alec come back with a comment kind of guy. That really gave him a platform, I had no idea that his goal in life was to be the performer or the actor that he is.

New Details On The Rock’s Role In ‘Rampage’ Movie

Deadline.com has released new information regarding The Rock’s upcoming movie project ‘Rampage’ based on the popular 1980’s arcade video game.

Brad Peyton has signed on to direct the New Line Cinema film about three giant monsters (a gorilla, a wolf and a lizard) that wreak havoc on various cities and landmarks across the United States. Peyton and The Rock just teamed up for San Andreas, which has grossed over $460 million worldwide since it opened on May 29th.

John Cena Talks About Respecting The Rock, Wanting To Do Movies & More

WWE United States Champion John Cena recently spoke with MTV U.K. to promote the new Judd Apatow film “Trainwreck,” which he has a part in. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On wanting to do wrestling and movies at the same time, unlike The Rock: “My life is with WWE. And at 38 years old I tell everybody I feel as strong and as good as ever. I think you can check out Monday Night Raw and watch any US Open challenge and my actions speak for themselves. When opportunities like this come up, I’m going to do it for the same reason that Dwayne has done what he’s done. Him being such a success has just gotten more eyeballs on WWE and that’s my goal. So when opportunities like this come up, I’m going to go for it. But unlike Dwayne I won’t take a sabbatical to do so, I take nothing away from his accomplishments – he is the most successful WWE superstar ever.”

On having respect for The Rock: “A few years back I was just too ignorant to see his vision. It is amazing after beating somebody up, how much respect you have for them. But what he was doing was absolutely correct, for where he wanted to go – he’s there tenfold now. Hopefully I can ride a little bit on his wing.”

Sgt. Slaughter Talks Rock vs. Brock Lesnar Rumors, Kevin Nash/WWE & More

WWE Hall Of Famer Sgt. Slaughter recently spoke with Scott Fishman of the Miami Herald about a number of subjects. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On a possible match between The Rock and Brock Lesnar: “That would be an incredible match. Especially now that both have matured in their businesses.”

On recruiting Kevin Nash to WWE: “Whether Shawn Michaels called him or not, I did discover Diesel in a box of tapes one time. I showed it to Vince McMahon, and he told me to give him a tryout…I’ve been around a long time. Coming up the ranks I’ve got to see those who were sons of professional wrestlers get in the ring when they were five years old. I would wrestle around with them. Guys like The Rock and Randy Orton. Just to see some of the other Samoan kids now. That’s all they thought about was professional wrestling. They would get in the ring, and we would work out with them. Now to see them blossoming the proper way to get into pro wrestling and sports entertainment business, just makes your heart feel good.”
