Longtime WWE Head Writer Gives His Notice To The Company

Brian Gewirtz, who has been with WWE as one of the head writers for around 15 years, gave his notice to the company a few weeks ago.

Gewirtz was at the June 29th edition of RAW in Washington, D.C. saying his “goodbyes” to everyone in the company.

For years, Gewirtz was the head writer of RAW, and remained with the creative team until October of 2012, when Eric Pankowski, the head of WWE creative at the time, sent him home.

Gewirtz had remained under contract as a consultant working from home, and also did some work for the WWE Network.

When The Rock would come in from time-to-time, he would specifically ask for Gewirtz to be there to be his writer. Gewirtz was the main writer for The Rock during the last few years of Rock’s full-time career in WWE.

Ron Simmons Talks About Helping The Rock, Dusty Rhodes, “Damn!” & More

WWE Hall Of Famer Ron Simmons recently spoke with the folks at Slam! Wrestling. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On being the first black World Champion: “At that particular time, I didn’t even focus on being the first African-American. My only goal was to become World champion. That was the only thing on my mind, to have the opportunity to win that belt. As time went on, I started thinking of the significance of it and it is more than I thought it would be. Even to this day, people tell me the impact it had on their life.”

On Dusty Rhodes: “I started in Florida Championship Wrestling and he had more of an impact on my career than anyone, but Hiro Matsuda. When I was told about his passing, it was like if time had stopped, I couldn’t believe it. The last time I saw him was during the WrestleMania weekend. He was such a great guy. He always wanted to make sure that you remembered the fundamentals, the basis of what the business was built around. He always told me to never become too big to forget about the people, to always stay in touch with the people. He wasn’t the greatest worker on Earth, but he was so good talking to people.”

On helping The Rock in The Nation of Domination: “That’s how he got his identity. They didn’t know what to do with him. I was able to help The Rock get over on the mic, to help him with his personality, with some of his catchphrases. He got a lot of this from me and I was glad to help giving him an identity.”

“It was just a matter of time before he found his niche, his own identity. He had tried to come along and do stuff that his family background was doing. They didn’t want a younger version of High Chief Peter Maivia. They wanted him to find his own identity and being himself. And that’s when he took off. It makes me feel good I had a little to do in this.”

On his “DAMN!” catchphrase: “Let’s just say I’d jump off the top rope and I’d sprain an ankle or I would miss a move or something, and the first thing I’d yell out was ‘Damn!’ and the people in the first few rows could hear me say that. Every time I was coming back to a city, the fans would notice that every time something would go wrong, I would say ‘Damn!’ and as I kept coming back to each of the cities, I noticed that they would all start chanting ‘Damn!’ One day I asked Bradshaw what they were doing.

“I think they’re talking about you,” he said.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, every time you do something and it’s not right you say ‘Damn!’ and that’s what they’re saying.”

“The writers picked up on that too. So we were in Chicago and Booker T and John Cena were doing something and they asked me to just walk on stage and after Cena was done talking just to say ‘Damn!’ and see the response. And it got over with the fans. You never know what people are gonna like, right?”

WWE Superstars Preview, Brawl After RAW, And Bo Dallas Reflects On The Rock’s Attack

Prior to last night’s edition of RAW in Washington, DC, WWE recorded two matches for this week’s episode of WWE Superstars, they were:

– Adam Rose vs. Fandango

– The Ascension vs. Curtis Axel & Damien Sandow

After RAW went off the air, The Authority stood tall after defeating Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. That was until Ryback, R-Truth and Dolph Ziggler made their way to the ring.

The fan favourites took on The Authority and hit their finishes on them to send them running to the back. Ryback interacted with a number of the kids at ringside afterwards.

In the video shown above, Bo Dallas can be seen reacting to The Rock’s attack on him during the WWE Live Event in Boston on Friday night which ended with Dallas receiving the Rock Bottom.

Dallas explains that the moment can’t be described and it’s something that he’ll remember for the rest of his life adding that Bo Dallas is the future.

The Rock On Wrestling Vs. Movies, His Success So Far And More

In the August 2015 issue of Esquire, WWE Legend The Rock is featured on the cover and the wrestler, now actor sat down for a lengthy interview over Skype while he was in LA.

Discussing his success so far:

“I’ve been fortunate to have had the life I had prior to Hollywood. I wasn’t starving, I was going to eat the next day. I came to Hollywood wanting a career that had longevity, and I wasn’t afraid to take risks because I had a dollar in the bank. I wasn’t driven by money as much as I was driven by making a successful transition. And I was smart enough to know that I certainly didn’t have all the answers and I needed to surround myself with smart people and be willing to take risks and be willing to fail.”

Discussing just how accurate the movie “The Wrestler” actually is:

“It’s very accurate. I would do blade jobs. I get a call once from the WWE, saying, “Vince [McMahon] would like to see you in Stamford.” I went to his office and he says, “I really think you have a lot of potential, but you’re not ready for the WWE. You should go to Memphis, Tennessee. That’s where I want you to learn the business.” And as I was leaving, he said, “You keep working hard, but don’t go down there and cut your fucking forehead with razor blades, you understand me?”

In the ’60s and ’70s and early ’80s, the trainers would grind you and eventually they would break something—they would break an ankle in ways that it would heal. It was just the way of the business, to ensure that you learned respect for wrestling. It was crazy. My dad [Rocky Johnson, a WWE Hall of Fame grappler] didn’t break anything on me, but he grinded me out every day for months.”

Discussing the world of wrestling vs. the world of movies:

“Wrestling is intimate. You can reach out and touch the wrestlers. I don’t get that connection in movies, but the impact is so much greater. You’re able to craft a longer career in movies. In wrestling, there’s a shelf life, and some wrestlers don’t pay attention to the shelf life. Mickey Rourke’s character in The Wrestler—that was my dad, that was my uncles, that was so many members of my family. It was the only thing they knew. And then they would end up wrestling for a hundred bucks, go to autograph signings for two hundred bucks.”

Mark Henry Talks About Feuding With The Rock, Attitude Era, Mae Young & More

WWE Superstar Mark Henry recently spoke with the U.K. Mirror to promote the new WWE Attitude Era book. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On if Vince McMahon outlined the way business was changing when he was first hired by WWE: “Yes, absolutely. But first of all, I didn’t believe that it was actually him who phoned me, so I hung up on him! I thought it was one of my friends who was playing a joke. He did call me back and this time he said ‘what happened?’ and I was like, ‘is this really Vince McMahon?’ We talked for about five or 10 minutes and he appreciated the fact that as I’ve mentioned, I was a fan of the industry, and I was a winner. He thought I would be a natural at it.”

On the Nation Of Domination split and feuding with The Rock, and if he foresaw Rock becoming one of the best ever: “Most definitely. He is one of the most well-studied, flamboyant characters of all time. And people… there is nobody on earth other than maybe Vince McMahon who has a work ethic like his. He studies and works and studies and works and that is all he ever wanted to do, to succeed. It was an honour to be in the ring with him first and secondly to gain the win. We’ve had a few matches, four I think to be exact, and I may be the only person in history that is undefeated against him over that many matches!”

On his storyline with Mae Young and other crazy storylines: “I enjoyed my time working with Mae Young, she was one of the coolest, most respected people that I ever met in the industry. We both gave each other’s characters life and that is something that is hard for people to understand. There are thousands of wrestlers and there are thousands of really good ones, but to be able to join somebody that kind of fell off the map and both of you rise to the top of the card because of chemistry, and that last for not a week or two, but for a year, and here we are 16 years later still talking about it, it’s impressive. It’s unbelievable.”

On his favorite Attitude Era match or moment: “I think my favourite in-ring moment, it really didn’t have anything to do with me. One of my favourite in-ring moments was seeing Hulk Hogan and The Rock go face to face [at WrestleMania 18]. It gave me something because I felt the connection because The Rock was my brother and as a child I grew up idolising Hulk Hogan. It was the future and the past coming together. It was something where I just stood there in amazement, just like everybody else. It was like five or six minutes where they just stood there and looked at each other and the crowd cheered. That was one of my favourite moments.”

The Rock Talks About When He May Return To WWE, His Relationship With Triple H And More

Cassam Looch of HeyUGuys interviewed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at the press tour for San Andreas this week. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

When he will return to WWE:

“I hope soon. We’ve discussed next year’s WrestleMania, possibly. I discuss it all the time with Triple H, we’ve got a great relationship. The old man Vince—I say that respectfully because he works harder than all of us. The key with WWE, and the fans know this, I love surprising them. It’s my favorite thing, [whether] it’s on Raw or WrestleMania. I also want to make sure that when we go back, we can create something special, big and epic. Right now we’re trying to figure out what that is.”

Playing Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie:

“I can’t wait because he’s a unique type of villain. For the fans out there, when you know the mythology, when you start off as a slave, you’re not in a good mood! There’s a heavy wrath that a lot of people have to pay. But when it’s fueled by a righteous anger, like Black Adam, then you open up to what the character can be, which I’m really excited about. That’s why he’s not just a straightforward bad guy.”

The Rock Talks About His Hollywood Success, Advice He Gave Roman Reigns

Part-time WWE performer The Rock recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s “Extra Mustard” site. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On being part of the “holy trinity” with Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan, but being the one to thrive in Hollywood: “It’s hard. It’s hard work. That’s the key, but it’s not that those guys don’t work hard. For whatever reason, it just kind of worked out for me. That’s the only answer I can give. I’ve had incredible matches with those guys and I’m good buddies with those guys, especially Austin. I know that they put their heart and soul into everything they do. Think about the matches and the tours I had with Austin. He is probably, if not the greatest of all time. There is a wiring in his head, which is, ‘I’m going out, I’m going to take it, and I’m going to be the best.’ He was my mentor, by the way, back when I was this young buck. With a top guy like Austin or Undertaker, you only get to work with them if they say it’s cool. For Austin to say it’s cool to have The Rock work with him is one thing, but he also wanted me to main event WrestleMania with him. He took me under his wing, taught me a hell of a lot, and I’ll never forget it.”

On Roman Reigns and the reaction he received at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view: “I wasn’t surprised by the reaction at all. That’s the beauty of Philly. I have felt that from Philly on both ends, as a heel and a baby face. Roman was getting booed in every city, and I just knew – we all knew – well, Philly was going to be worse.

“The only advice I gave Roman was that you just need to stay the course. It’s a unique dynamic and relationship that you have with the fans in wrestling. They’re passionate, just like you’re passionate, but they know it’s a work, just like you know it’s a work. It’s this fine balance you have to find between just staying the course and continue to cut your teeth every night by putting in good performances.”

On Vince McMahon and “San Andreas” director Brad Peyton: “This will be the only time that Brad Peyton’s name will ever be mentioned in the same sentence as Vince McMahon. Vince has been a mentor and a father figure to me. I met him when I was eleven years old. Even still today, I appreciate the relationship we have. It’s a real cool father-son dynamic, and especially as I get older, I can appreciate the relationship today better than when I was a punk 25-year-old kid. But here is the connective tissue between Brad Peyton and Vince McMahon – they come to work every single day like it’s their first day on the job and they will outwork every single person in the building. Vince’s work ethic at 70, or however old he is, is just crazy. He’s squatting 500 pounds at one o’clock in the morning. Not that Brad Peyton is squatting 500 pounds, but they both want to excel, raise the bar, and go beyond expectations.”
