  • WWE Money in the Bank 2014 Preview and Predictions

The WWE’s brightest stars will attempt to cash in at this Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Two ladder matches will main event the program, with one being held to declare a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. In addition, former champion Daniel Bryan will address the WWE Universe during the pre-show.

Here are my predictions for this Sunday’s event.

Summer Rae vs. Layla (Fandango Guest Referee)

    20140624_EP_LIGHT-SummerLayla_Homepage

I was never the biggest Fandango supporter, but I definitely thought he would be doing something bigger than referring a divas match a year ago. He has regressed over the past year and lost a lot of momentum. This will likely be the bathroom break match of the night, and Fandango will play a major role in the outcome, of course. Summer Rae will win this one by either rejoining Fandango or using him to influence the outcome of the contest before abandoning him.

    Winner: Summer Rae by pinfall

    Rusev vs. Big E

    20140627_EP_LIGHT-Match-Rusev-BigE_HOMEPAGE

These guys performed well together at last month’s Payback, even though they were given less than four minutes total. They will hopefully get a little more time during this one, allowing both superstars to showcase their strengths.

I think Rusev will ultimately win this one, but Big E will also look strong during the match. Big E cut a passionate promo on last week’s Raw, so it appears the WWE wants to showcase him a bit more. Both guys will look good, but Rusev will force Big E to tap out in the end.

    Winner: Rusev by submission

Stardust and Goldust vs. Ryback and Curtis Axel

    20140620_EP_LIGHT_Match_StardustGoldustRybackAxel_HOMEPAGE

The Rhodes Brothers storyline has been moving slowly over the past few months. It first looked as if the two brothers were going to feud with one another, with Cody searching for an adequate replacement because he felt Goldust deserved better.

He eventually rebranded himself as Stardust and the two have been on a winning streak ever since. They will continue to look strong on Sunday, picking up the win after Cody hits his Diamond Dust finisher on Curtis Axel.

Winner: Stardust and Goldust by pinfall

5 Questions Heading into Money in the Bank

Money in the Bank is only a few days away, and it appears that the card is all but set. There are two ladder matches scheduled so fans can enjoy double the fun. Leading into the event, most questions have been answers, but a few still remain. Here are five questions that need to be answered heading into Money in the Bank.

    5. Should Big E Be Given More Time to Speak?

    big-e-langston-ses-4

This past week on Raw, Big E cut a rather passionate promo on Rusev. During his Intercontinental Title run, Big E was never really given an opportunity to connect with fans, leading many, including myself, to believe that his run with the title was stale.

However, after seeing him on Raw last week, I think that he could be one of the top superstars if booked properly. Instead of writing Big E cookie cutter promos that bore the fans, he should be given more time to speak freely and be himself as he did on Raw. If he had been given this opportunity while he still held the title, he could still be holding the strap today.

    4. Will Bad News Barrett Compete?

    bad-news-barrett-injured-at-smackdown-ses-1

Bad News Barrett was unfortunately the one receiving the bad news this week after separating his shoulder during a SmackDown taping. It seems that Barrett cannot avoid the injury bug, as he has been known to go down to injury at the worst possible times.

There has been no official announcement regarding his status for this Sunday’s pay-per-view, but it seems as if he will have to sit out while his fellow competitors attempt to win at shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. One can only hope that he recovers quickly and gets back in the ring, especially considering how successful his latest push has been.

WWE Money in the Bank: Potential Disappointment

One week from today, WWE’s annual Money in the Bank pay-per-view will be held in Boston, Massachusetts. The event has quickly become one of the most anticipated programs of the year, as it provides exciting action and sets up the storyline for months by allowing a WWE superstar to stalk his prey while holding a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match.

There will be two Money in the Bank ladder matches this year. One will be held for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and the other will be a traditional contest for a shot at the title. The first contest will feature perennial title contenders such as John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Alberto Del Rio, as well as up-and-coming stars such as Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, and Cesaro.

It seems like John Cena is once again the favorite to leave Boston as the champ.

It seems like John Cena is once again the favorite to leave Boston as the champ.

The second ladder match will feature Seth Rollins, with the rest of the lineup to be determined in a series of qualifying matches. Thus far, only three matches have been announced for the entire pay-per-view, and with only one week left before the event, one has to wonder how the WWE will tie everything together in such a brief period.

Other than the two ladder matches, a matchup between the Usos and Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of the Wyatt family is the only confirmed contest on the card. It seems apparent that Dean Ambrose will be one of the participants in the traditional ladder match. Potential options also include those who did not qualify for the championship ladder match, including Bad News Barrett, Dolph Ziggler, and Rob Van Dam.

The two ladder matches will soak up a large portion of the roster, meaning the midcard will have to pick up some slack in order to fill up the three hours of airtime. Rumored contests include Cody Rhodes and Goldust vs. RybAxel, Rusev vs. Big E, and a Divas Championship match involving Paige and all or part of the Funkadactyls.

Rumored Participants For Second MITB Match, Other MITB PPV Rumors

The main event for the June 29th WWE Money In The Bank pay-per-view will be the ladder match for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which features John Cena, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Sheamus, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt and Alberto Del Rio. As noted recently, Cena or Reigns (and Cesaro as a long-shot) will likely come out on top, as the winner is the likely candidate for Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

Also confirmed for the 6/29 PPV is a WWE Tag-Team Championship match with The Usos defending against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of The Wyatt Family.

The second ladder match, which was made official recently and will be for the usual Money In The Bank briefcase, as of right now only features Seth Rollins. Additional names rumored for the match include Dean Ambrose, Big E., Rob Van Dam, Bo Dallas, as well as Bad News Barrett and Dolph Ziggler, the latter two of which will either be part of that match or in an Intercontinental Championship match with each other.

Additionally, the direction for the WWE Divas Championship match at Money In The Bank seems to be Paige defending against Naomi of The Funkadactyls.

  • Update On Cena’s Eye Injury: Wyatt Demoted In The Past For Similar Accident

As previously reported, John Cena suffered bad swelling due to a poke in the eye from Bray Wyatt during their “No Holds Barred” match at the WWE live event this past Saturday night in Madison, Wisconsin. By the time RAW rolled around on Monday night, the swelling had subsided substantially, however it was still noticeable. Regardless, Cena worked a match on the show and was a lot more involved compared to the previous night’s house show in Rochester, Minnesota, where he simply tagged in to score the pin during the finish of a six-man tag-team match where he, along with The Usos, took on The Wyatt Family.

The production crew was informed on Monday night not to shoot any closeup shots of Cena during the match, despite the fact that his eye — which was completely swollen shut during the weekend — was in much better shape.

A little known fact that relates to this story is that Wyatt, back when he was still performing as “Husky Harris,” accidentally poked Cena in the eye during a match, an incident that many believed to have resulted in him being demoted to the developmental system due to the fact that he “didn’t apologize enough” for the mistake.

  • What Happened After Tuesday’s SmackDown Tapings, Dark Matches

    – The dark match before Tuesday night’s WWE TV tapings saw Natalya defeat Rosa Mendes.

    – The dark match in between Main Event and the SmackDown tapings saw Los Matadores defeat Ryback and Curtis Axel after El Torito distracted Ryback.

    – After the SmackDown tapings concluded, Bray Wyatt called Seth Rollins to the ring. It looked like they were going to start fighting, but instead they attacked Dean Ambrose, who was still in the ring following the Wyatt vs. Ambrose SmackDown main event.

Roman Reigns, Sheamus, Luke Harper and The Usos then hit the ring and a huge brawl broke out. Reigns and Ambrose both grabbed steel chairs and went after Seth Rollins as the ring cleared out. The night ended with Reigns and Ambrose playing to the crowd.

Update On The Severity Of John Cena’s Eye Injury

As noted, John Cena suffered a badly swollen eye during his match with Bray Wyatt at the WWE live event on Saturday night in Madison, Wisconsin. There was some concern that he had suffered a concussion, however that does not appear to be the case.

According to what WWE officials are saying, the eye injury occurred when Cena got poked in the eye by Wyatt, not a headbutt or stiff punch as originally expected.

On Sunday night, WWE switched the scheduled Cena vs. Wyatt “No Holds Barred” singles match to a six-man tag-team bout that featured Cena and The Usos against all three members of The Wyatt Family.

It appears that Cena did not suffer any orbital bone injuries, which was another concern the company had. Instead, the belief is that Cena simply suffered a swollen eye and all will be fine once the swelling goes away.

  • Update On John Cena’s Condition: Did He Suffer A Concussion?, More On Eye Injury

As we noted earlier today, John Cena suffered an eye injury after taking a bad headbutt from Bray Wyatt at the WWE live event on Saturday night in Madison, Wisconsin. Cena’s eye is reportedly swollen completely shut and is said to look awful today.

There was some concern that Cena potentially suffered a concussion as well on Saturday night, however he is booked for tonight’s WWE live event in Rochester, Minnesota.

WWE did change his match to a six-man tag-team match, with Cena teaming with The Usos to take on all three members of The Wyatt Family, which will help limit the amount of physicality he will need to do, but does confirm that he didn’t suffer a concussion.

Had he suffered a concussion, there is no way WWE would have put him back in the ring 24 hours later, especially on a non-televised event.

The Ascension To Be Called Up Soon, Plans For WWE Tag-Team Titles Revealed

While it appears that Wyatt Family members Luke Harper and Erick Rowan are headed towards a run as WWE Tag-Team Champions, there are those within the company who feel that will not happen.

The belief in the company right now is that NXT tag-team The Ascension will be called up soon, and that The Usos will hang onto the titles until that happens.

  • Rowan & Harper Briefly Win The WWE Tag Titles

Update: The video was pulled from Youtube due to a copyright clalim

Erick Rowan and Luke Harper briefly won the WWE Tag Team Titles at yesterday’s live event from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

While they were celebrating with their newly won gold, Fit Finlay came out and explained to the referee that The Wyatt Family cheated to win, knocking out one of the Usos with the titles. The match was then re-started and The Usos retained.

John Cena and The Usos: A Beneficial Partnership

When we say Uce, y’all say Cena sucks. Something feels off about that last sentence, but oh well, maybe it will catch on someday.

Over the past few weeks, fans have been treated to the somewhat unlikely pairing of John Cena and the Usos. The Tag Team Champions initially helped out WWE’s Superman during a six-man tag contest against the Wyatt Family, and have been accompanying him to the ring during his battles with the Wyatt Family ever since.

Cena and the Usos have enjoyed much success together over the past few weeks.

Cena and the Usos have enjoyed much success together over the past few weeks.

At first it seemed like the relationship between Cena and the Usos was a forced one. After all, what did the Usos really have to gain by helping Cena fight his seemingly never-ending battle with Bray Wyatt? It simply seemed as if creative was injecting anyone into the program to keep it fresh for a few more weeks.

However, as the weeks go on, it seems like it was a very smart move to include the Usos into the Cena/Wyatt program. The most important reason is that it provides the Usos with more exposure.

It is no secret that the Tag Team Championships have been placed on the backburner. After all, they have not even been defended on an actual pay-per-view telecast since Elimination Chamber and the Usos haven’t had a legitimate feud for the titles since the New Age Outlaws broke down faster than a 1978 Ford Pinto.

Pairing the Usos with Cena allows them to be on television more frequently, even if they are not defending their titles on a weekly basis. It also allows them to look strong, because Cena is absolutely never booked to look weak, as evidenced by his match against Bray Wyatt at Extreme Rules where it took three superstars and a child to finally take down Cena.

Backstage Update On Shield-Evolution Plans, New Payback Match Rumors

Currently there are three matches officially announced for the upcoming WWE Payback pay-per-view on June 1st in Chicago, Illinois. Those matches are The Shield vs. Evolution in a No Holds Barred Elimination match, John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt in a Last Man Standing match and Bad News Barrett vs. Rob Van Dam for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Other matches likely for WWE Payback include The Usos vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan for the WWE Tag-Team Championships, Paige vs. Alicia Fox for the WWE Divas Championship, Sheamus vs. Cesaro for the WWE United States Championship, Adam Rose vs. Jack Swagger, Rusev vs. Big E. and Summer Rae vs. Layla with Fandango as special guest referee.

As far as the No Holds Barred Elimination main event, a possible scenario being considered is one that would see Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins eliminated early, leaving Roman Reigns to make a huge comeback on all three Evolution members by himself.

The match will be Batista’s final match in WWE for several months, and based on plans for the future, could be one of Triple H’s last for a while as well.

5 Potential Tag Team Title Challengers

It seemed as if the tag team division had been revitalized last year. However, almost as soon as fans started to become excited about the division again, half of the teams were broken up and it has been largely ignored.

The Usos are the current champions, and I think their pay-per-view exposure shows how confident the WWE is that the Uso brothers will draw. After all, they defended their tag titles on the pre-show at WrestleMania and did not appear in any capacity at Extreme Rules.

With that said, it would not take much effort to get the division back to where it was at the end of last year. Here are five current or potential tag teams that could help make the division relevant again (or at the very least, get it onto the pay-per-view card).

    rybaxel

    5. Rybaxel – At first, this team seemed like it would go nowhere. They had both just basically flopped while under the tutelage of Paul Heyman, so why would anyone believe that they would fare well without him? Surprisingly, both have improved since leaving Heyman, especially Ryback. He is hilarious on the microphone and can actually be pretty entertaining when he’s allowed to speak. I think the WWE still has plans to push both guys in the future, and a run with the Tag Team Championships could help elevate both superstars.

    dolph-ziggler-vs-damien-sandow-w-620x350

    4. Damien Sandow and Dolph Ziggler – These guys have adopted similar personality traits in recent weeks, most notably because both guys seem disgruntled, annoyed, and displeased that their talents are not being properly utilized. Sandow and Ziggler would make a great team if paired together, as both are impressive in the ring and on the mic. There were rumors a while back of a possible stable of disgruntled superstars being formed, including Ziggler and the Miz, but a team of Sandow and Ziggler would work even better and could make the tag title picture exciting again.

    20120802_SD_Swagger_Rhodes_2

    3. Jack Swagger and Cody Rhodes – It is no secret that Zeb Colter has been trying to recruit a new member to the Real Americans since Cesaro betrayed him a few weeks back. With Cody being the son of the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, it would make sense for him to become a Real American. Cody and Goldust are definitely going to part ways soon, with Cody likely being the one to turn heel, so it would provide the perfect opportunity for Cody to align with Swagger and Colter afterward.

Two Main Events Confirmed For Monday’s Edition Of WWE RAW

  • Extreme Rules 2014: A Noticeable Lack of Extreme

This Sunday, the WWE will hold its annual Extreme Rules pay-per-view. However, upon glancing at the card, something immediately stands out: a noticeable lack of extreme.

With the card seemingly set (assuming a Tag Team Championship match between the Usos and Rybaxel isn’t added last minute), only two matches on the entire seven-match card feature stipulations that are even slightly extreme (not counting the inevitable dud between El Torito and Hornswoggle on the pre-show).

Sunday's contest between Daniel Bryan and Kane is one of only two matches on the card featuring extreme rules.

Sunday’s contest between Daniel Bryan and Kane is one of only two matches on the card featuring extreme rules.

Those matches are of course the WWE Championship match between Daniel Bryan and Kane, which will be fought under no-holds barred rules, and the cage match between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. Even the six-man tag between Evolution and the Shield has not been announced as an extreme rules match, although that could change between now and Sunday.

This Sunday’s card highlights the problem with holding themed pay-per-views. How can the company possibly market an event under the name Extreme Rules and then hold one match that is actually extreme (the WWE Title contest) and one (the cage match) that is billed as extreme, but is in fact usually tamer than the pit at a Justin Bieber concert.

It is especially difficult during the PG Era to hold an event such as this one, as most of the matches that could have been utilized (first blood match, inferno match, casket match, etc.) are now essentially banned, leaving creative with few options other than a typical no-holds barred match and TLC type matches that are already featured on other pay-per-views throughout the year. In short, the event does not offer anything unique.

WWE Main Event Results – April 29, 2014

The following are results for this week’s edition of WWE Main Event, which aired live on the WWE Network on Tuesday, April 29, 2014.

    – Goldust def. Alberto Del Rio in a singles bout to open the show. The match saw a lot of back-and-forth action until Goldust counters Del Rio’s superkick attempt and blasts him with his Final Cut finisher for the 1-2-3 and the victory.

    – After Goldust picks up the victory, Cody Rhodes comes in and congratulates him. Renee Young enters the ring and interviews both guys. She asks if their recent singles matches means they are going their separate ways. Goldust says that the Brotherhood is still together. He says they may work singles matches from time-to-time, but ultimately they have each others backs. Young asks Rhodes if he is proud of his brother. He seems offended at the question and asks if she thinks Goldust is better than him because he won tonight and Cody lost on RAW. Eventually he apologizes and reiterates the fact that the Brotherhood is together and says things will stay that way. The two hug and that’s that.

    – Paige def. Alicia Fox in Divas action to retain her WWE Divas Championship. The match went back-and-forth, with Paige taking a lot of punishment before ultimately hitting Fox with a big DDT to score the pin fall victory. After the match, as Paige was walking up the ramp, Tamina Snuka comes out to the top of the stage and the two have a staredown.

    – Backstage, Renee Young is with Sheamus. She asks Sheamus for his level of concern knowing he has to face Bray Wyatt in the main event tonight. Sheamus talks briefly about how he’s not afraid and informs Wyatt that tonight — it’s time to fight.

    – Bad News Barrett def. Kofi Kingston in singles competition. Barrett cuts a promo before the match dressing down Big E., informing him that he’s going to take his WWE Intercontinental Championship this Sunday at Extreme Rules. The two have a solid back-and-forth match that ends when Kingston leaps in the air off of the ringside steps, but gets caught on the way down with the Bull Hammer Elbow from Barrett. Barrett rolls Kingston back in the ring and covers him. 1-2-3. Barrett wins.

    – Bray Wyatt def. Sheamus in the headline bout of this week’s edition of WWE Main Event. Bray Wyatt sings along with the crowd, singing of course, “he’s got the whole world in his hands.” He sings along with them until Sheamus’ music hits to interupt him. The two end up having an extremely competitive match that sees Erick Rowan and Luke Harper distract Sheamus at the end, allowing Wyatt to hit him with his Sister Abigail finisher for the 1-2-3.

    – After the main event ends, Rowan and Harper join Wyatt in a three-on-one beatdown of Sheamus until The Usos come out to make the save. The show goes off the air with all six guys staring each other down.

  • Bill Apter Interviews D-Von Dudley For WWE.com: Talks Paul Heyman, Tag-Teams

Veteran pro wrestling journalist recently caught up with D-Von Dudley for an exclusive WWE.com interview. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

APTER: Paul Heyman was, of course, the extreme ringleader. He riled the troops up and got everyone in an extreme mood, didn’t he?

DUDLEY: He sure did. I met Paul after I had a tryout for ECW. He was at the Pelham, N.Y., production studio they used for editing and doing the commentary. I got in there, Paul was sitting down, and we wound up talking and hitting it off great. I will admit right now that I am a Paul Heyman guy! When a lot of us wrestlers back in those days were looking for work and were not looked at by WWE or WCW, Paul was the one who gave us a shot. He believed in us. He saw things in us that we didn’t know we had and it brought out the best in us. Paul knew how to get certain things out of us to make us better. I used to call him Dr. Frankenstein because he created so much talent that came out of ECW that no one else would have been able to create.

APTER: What do you think of the current Paul Heyman?

DUDLEY: It’s the real Paul Heyman! He does things that make you hate him, but a minute later you want to marry him and love him. [laughs]

APTER: Who do you consider extreme on the current WWE roster?

DUDLEY: Daniel Bryan, for one. Most people wouldn’t put him in that category because he is such a technician in the ring, but I can see him getting down and dirty. Sheamus could be in that category as well. Put Randy Orton there, too. We beat the hell out of each other many times. I know a lot of people cheer him and a lot boo him, but I would put John Cena on that list as well. I had many brawls with him when I was in WWE and he was working himself up in the ranks.

APTER: So much of your career was as a tag team competitor with your partner, Bubba Ray. What is your current view of the WWE tag team scene?

DUDLEY: I think it’s great that WWE is strengthening the tag team division. If given the opportunity to go back to WWE, I would love to have a partner to take on The Usos, Cody Rhodes & Goldust, Ryback & Curtis Axel, The Shield, The Wyatts.
