WWE December PPVs: History and What Happened to them?

WWE December pay-per-views (PPVs) have a storied yet inconsistent history, often fluctuating between great and lackluster events. This article explores the evolution of WWE’s December PPVs, highlighting key events and discussing what has happened to them over the years.

The Evolution of WWE December PPVs

No Holds Barred

WWE’s first December PPV, No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie, took place in 1989. This unique event was essentially a one-match show that combined wrestling with movie promotion, setting an unusual precedent for future December events. However, it wasn’t until the late 1990s that December began to feature more traditional wrestling PPVs.

Armageddon

The introduction of Armageddon in 1999 marked a significant shift. This event became known for its chaotic matches, including the infamous six-man Hell in a Cell match in 2000 featuring stars like The Rock and Triple H.

Armageddon set a high standard for future December shows, with its major main events and memorable moments.

Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC)

In 2009, WWE introduced the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) event, which further solidified December as a month for high-stakes matches. TLC matches became a staple of WWE’s December offerings, showcasing some of the most daring and memorable moments in recent WWE history.

Notable December PPVs

Several December PPVs stand out due to their impact and quality. Here are some of the most notable:

  • TLC 2011: This event is often regarded as one of the best December PPVs. It featured a triple threat match for the WWE Championship between CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio, and The Miz. Punk’s victory signified a turning point in WWE’s creative direction and it would lead to his 434 reign as Champion.
  • Armageddon 2000: Known for its iconic Hell in a Cell match, this event featured six of WWE’s top stars battling it out. The match is still remembered for its brutality and the storytelling involved, making it a fan favorite.

Despite these highlights, many December events have struggled with consistency. For instance, December to Dismember in 2006 is often cited as one of the worst PPVs ever due to poor booking, awful in-ring action and a lack of actual ECW names.

What Happened to WWE December PPVs?

In recent years, WWE has shifted its focus regarding December events. The traditional December PPV has been replaced by special episodes or premium live events that often do not carry the same weight as earlier shows.

For example, while TLC was once a staple event in December, it has not been consistently featured on the yearly calendar since 2020.The decline of standalone December PPVs can probably be attributed to several factors:

Even Bigger Focus on WrestleMania Build-Up

December events have often been seen as mere placeholders leading into the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania season. This shift has led to less emphasis on creating compelling stories for December shows.

Increased Frequency of Events

With WWE expanding its schedule to include more premium live events throughout the year, there is less need for significant standalone shows in December. Events like Day 1 or New Year’s Evil have taken precedence over traditional December offerings.

How Much The Hardy Boyz And Others Were Paid For First-Ever TLC Match

The Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, and The Dudley Boyz all made history when they competed in the first-ever Tables, Ladders and Chairs match during the SummerSlam 2000 event.

However, even though all three of these teams put their bodies on the line in this extreme bout, they were paid very little for their effort.

Hall of Famer Mick Foley, who was serving as the on-screen commissioner for WWE at the time recently revealed how much the three teams were paid for the match:

“I was still one of the guys. They fully understood that I wasn’t the commissioner, I’m not actually [in the] office, and I said, ‘How bad was it?’

And when they said $10,000, I was like, ‘You got $10,000 for that?’” recalled Mick Foley, “So I went to Jim [Ross, Head of Talent Relations at the time] on their behalf and petitioned for more money.”

The Hardcore Star revealed that he mentioned the match between The Undertaker and Big Boss Man to Ross. He protested against the fact that Taker made much more for the bout that wasn’t as good.

According to Foley, it felt ‘like a slap’ in the face of the three teams to be paid so little for their hard work. His petition did get them bumped up from there.

Bully Ray: “TLC is probably the most difficult match to pull off in all of pro wrestling”

Ahead of the upcoming WWE TLC pay-per-view, SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio co-host Bully Ray recently commented on the 20th anniversary of the first-ever TLC match.

Whilst the ‘triangle’ ladder match from WrestleMania 2000 was essentially a TLC bout? SummerSlam 2000 saw the first official Tables, Ladders and Chairs match between The Dudley Boys, Edge & Christian and The Hardy Boyz.

Bully Ray on TLC Matches

“You don’t have time to think” Bully Ray began on the podcast. “Like when you’re taking a bump like I took off of the ladder that night? Or the bump that Matt [Hardy] took backwards off the ladder? The more you think, the worse it’s going to be.”

“You’ll get in your own head” Bully Ray continued, “you just want to grip it and rip it and go out there.”

Bully Ray would then discuss the extreme difficulty in putting together a TLC match, especially with 5 other performers in the bout. “A TLC match is probably the most difficult match to pull off in all of pro wrestling. And the reason is all six guys have to know the match backwards and forwards. Every step, every way. Because if one guy goes down? If something happens, if something goes wrong? Even the smallest of things? It’s going to be a dramatic chain reaction.”

Ray elaborated further, saying “everybody has to be able to fill in, everybody has to be able to improvise. You need to know where everybody is. When you come up with a match sometimes? You maybe only know the finish, and then sometimes you only know a couple spots. Some guys know the entire match. This particular match? Everybody has to know backwards and forwards, and everybody has to recite the match backwards and forwards. [Just so] all the other guys know that you got it.”

WWE Nixes Scheduled Championship Match From TLC Card

WWE has scrapped another match from the card for the final pay-per-view event of the year for the company, TLC.

Plans for WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley at TLC has been nixed as WWE officials have decided to hold off on booking a championship match between Bayley and Lacey Evans.

This match, which was never announced, had been reportedly on the card as recently as December 9th. That changed according to Dave Meltzer of the Daily Update on F4Wonline.com.

Originally, the belief was that Bayley would defend the SmackDown Women’s Title against Evans at the show. Meltzer noted that the call was made not to book the match at TLC.

One would think then not at TLC then the company would wait a month and book the contest at the next and first pay-per-view event of 2020, Royal Rumble.

That’s not the case as Meltzer noted, “They were not planning to hold that match off until the Royal Rumble.” This leaves plans for Bayley up in the air for both shows.

Although she doesn’t have a match booked, she will witness history.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors vs. RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair will go down in the first-ever Women’s TLC Tag Team Match.

Stipulation Added To Title Match At WWE TLC

A stipulation for a championship match has been announced for the WWE TLC PPV.

Originally, WWE announced that WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) vs. The Revival would take place in a normal tag team match.

On Friday, WWE confirmed that this contest will now have a ladder match stipulation.

WWE presents the TLC pay-per-view event on Sunday, December 15, 2019 in Minneapolis at the Target Center that will air on the WWE Network. The company is expected to announce more matches in the coming days and even the day of the show. Here is the updated card:

First-Ever Women’s TLC Tag Team Title Match Officially Announced

During Monday’s episode of RAW, the company confirmed that WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors will make their next title defense against RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair in the first-ever Women’s TLC Tag Team match at the TLC PPV.

This match was locally advertised last month when promotional material for this show first surfaced. Also, WWE has been building up to this contest over the past few weeks of television with Flair feuding with Asuka and Kairi Sane.

WWE presents the TLC pay-per-view event on Sunday, December 15, 2019 in Minneapolis at the Target Center that will air on the WWE Network. Here is the updated card:

WWE Hypes Return Of Liv Morgan, Aleister Black vs. Buddy Murphy Confirmed

WWE Hypes Return Of Liv Morgan

Liv Morgan is finally returning to WWE television as the company aired a vignette during Monday’s RAW episode where it was noted that the show will be getting a “Makeover” from Liv soon as she makes her return to action.

As of this writing, there’s no official word yet on when Liv will be back on TV. This comes after Morgan has been rarely used this year on television once she split up from The Riott Squad with Sarah Logan, who is on SmackDown, and Ruby Riott, who is out of action with an injury.

She was then drafted to the RAW roster in the 2019 WWE Draft. Morgan has been teasing a new character on social media for months.

Aleister Black vs. Buddy Murphy Confirmed For WWE TLC

As expected, WWE confirmed Aleister Black vs. Buddy Murphy in a singles match would take place at the TLC pay-per-view event this Sunday in Minneapolis at the Target Center on the WWE Network.

Black and Murphy have been feuding for the past few weeks on RAW even before Survivor Series last month. The company made the contest official on Monday’s go-home edition of RAW.

Bray Wyatt Seemingly Won’t Portray The Fiend In Title Match At WWE TLC

For the first time since making his return to WWE television earlier this year, it looks like Bray Wyatt will not portray his alter ego, The Fiend, when he wrestles in his next match.

WWE confirmed on Friday that Daniel Bryan wouldn’t be getting a rematch against Wyatt for the WWE Title at the TLC show. Instead, WWE is going in a different direction as they’ve gone back to original plans with The Miz being the next in line to try to dethrone Wyatt as the WWE Champion.

As seen in the graphic below, Wyatt will be portraying his normal character that is usually shown in the Firefly Funhouse segments. On SmackDown, Wyatt attacked Miz in a backstage segment and wasn’t dressed up as The Fiend.

Historically, when WWE advertises Wyatt for a match, a photo of him dressed as The Fiend is shown.

WWE set up this contest on Friday Night SmackDown in Fayetteville, NC at the Crown Complex on FOX when the company crowned new #1 contenders.

A Fatal 4-Way Elimination Tag Team Match was booked that saw Chad Gable & Ali, The Revival, Heavy Machinery, and the Lucha House Party battle it out.

As seen in the contest, The Revival ended up winning. As a result, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder are the new #1 contenders and will challenge The New Day for the straps.

First Match Announced For WWE TLC

A first match has been announced for the upcoming WWE TLC PPV.

On Friday afternoon, WWE confirmed that Roman Reigns vs. King Baron Corbin in a TLC match will take place. This was expected to take place as it has been advertised in the local market for several weeks.

WWE has been building up this feud on television over the past few weeks to the point that the company has brought Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode into the fold to help Corbin battle Reigns.

Last week, Reigns took on Roode while “The Big Dog” battled Ziggler on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Fayetteville, NC at the Crown Complex on FOX.

Details On WWE Moving Original Survivor Series Match To TLC

News on one match involving a top feud that has been heavily featured on WWE Monday Night RAW that was supposed to take place at Survivor Series but pushed to a later date has surfaced online.

That match is Rusev vs. Bobby Lashley. This news comes after it was listed among the matches locally advertised to take place at the TLC pay-per-view event last month.

According to a report by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had originally planned to announce this match for the Survivor Series pay-per-view event. However, plans changed and it was pushed back to TLC.

The reason why it was moved from Survivor series to TLC is due to the feeling that the show is already overloaded as most of the card has already been announced.

Details On Planned Title Match At WWE Survivor Series

The show being overloaded is caused by the 15-person Elimination Matches with WWE NXT, RAW and SmackDown teams. In theory, these matches would have to go 10 to 14 falls each.

Meltzer added that the current plans call for Rusev vs. Lashley to be a non-stipulation match at TLC.

As of this writing, there’s still no word yet on participants for the Team NXT men’s Triple Threat but NXT Champion Adam Cole will likely be the Captain. The reason for that belief is due to him not already being booked in a match that night.

Team RAW will feature Captain Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, Ricochet and Drew McIntyre, while Team SmackDown will feature Captain Roman Reigns, Shorty G, Mustafa Ali, King Baron Corbin and Braun Strowman.

First-Ever Women’s Match Among Bouts Locally Advertised For WWE TLC

The final WWE pay-per-view event of the year, TLC, is quickly approaching and the first advertisement of matches has been released.

Among the three matches advertised for the show includes WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors vs. RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair in the first-ever Women’s TLC Tag Team match.

WWE Reportedly Edited RAW Reactions During Seth Rollins’ Challenge

This would be in line with what is happening on WWE television right now. Asuka and Kairi Sane just beat Lynch and Flair in a tag team match to retain their titles on this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw in Manchester, England.

Last year’s show was headlined by a Triple Threat TLC Match between Flair, Asuka, and Lynch.

The WWE TLC pay-per-view event takes place on Sunday, December 15, 2019, in Minneapolis at the Target Center and will air on the WWE Network. Here are the matches advertised.

  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The Kabuki Warriors vs. Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair – first-ever Women’s TLC Tag Team match
  • Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin – TLC match
  • Rusev vs. Bobby Lashley with Lana

WWE often takes full advantage of the “card subject to change” disclaimer, so it’s possible they will go in a different direction with at least one of these matches. These matches indicate where WWE’s storyline plans are headed in the month ahead.

WWE’s next pay-per-view event is the Survivor Series pay-per-view event on Sunday, November 24, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois at the Allstate Arena.

Asuka Claims She Is Now ‘The Man’

The Empress of Tomorrow has finally done it. Asuka won her first championship in the main roster last night when she came out on top of the first-ever triple threat Tables, Ladders and Chairs match involving Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair at TLC pay-per-view event.

The newest SmackDown Women’s Champion had some words to say when she was interviewed backstage after her match. She claimed she is now “The Man” and that nobody is ready for Asuka.

“Becky says she is The Man, Charlotte says she is The Man, but now I am The Man! Nobody is ready for Asuka!,” she exclaimed in excitement over her victory.

As for how Asuka won it, it was because of Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey who interfered in the match and pushed Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair off a ladder, giving Asuka a chance to gain victory. The two losing women weren’t too happy with the outcome.

You can check out the video below:

Watch What Happened After TLC Went Off The Air

As noted before, Asuka walked out of the Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view event last night as the WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, in the main event match which also saw interference by Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey.

In a video released by WWE, we get a glimpse at what happened after the match when TLC went off the air:

As Charlotte Flair was making her way back to the ring, we see Becky Lynch angry over the interference by Ronda Rousey which cost both the competitors the title.

Charlotte Flair herself was not too happy with the outcome, and understandably so.

During the match, Ronda Rousey interfered by pushing Becky and Charlotte off a ladder which gave Asuka the chance to win the match.

“I will be back, I will be back, I will be back!” an emotional Becky Lynch proclaims on the ramp whilst making her way backstage.

While as of this writing there is no news on when Becky Lynch will get her rematch for the title, it seems like it could be coming soon. We could see a rematch this Tuesday on SmackDown Live or on the Royal Rumble, whenever it is, we’ll keep you updated.

The Bar Retain SmackDown Tag Team Titles At WWE TLC

The Bar retained the SmackDown Tag Team Titles Titles at Sunday’s (December 16th, 2018) WWE TLC pay-per-view event in San Jose, California at the SAP Center on the WWE Network. They beat The Usos and New Day in a Three Way Match at the show.

The Bar won the titles by defeating The New Day on October 16, 2018 in Washington, D.C. on the SmackDown 1000 episode. This marked their first reigns as champions as there have been 11 reigns between 7 teams, and 15 individual champions.

It will be interesting to see if the Usos or New Day get another crack the gold as it could come as soon as Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown Live in Fresno, CA at the Save Mart Center or the following week which will be taped this coming Tuesday.

It’s possible that WWE waits until the next time they are on pay-per-view as the Royal Rumble pay-per-view event goes down on Sunday, January 27, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona at Chase Field. Time will tell how WWE handles the booking for the next feud involving The Bar.

Possible Opening Match For Tonight’s WWE TLC

It appears that WWE’s official website may have revealed the opening contest of the main card of the WWE TLC pay-per-view event.

In the preview article for the Finals of the Mixed Match Challenge Season 2 that will see R-Truth & Carmella vs. Jinder Mahal & Alicia Fox, it was noted that the match will air live on Facebook Watch at 7pm ET, which is when the main TLC card kicks off.

“Jinder Mahal & Alicia Fox will battle R-Truth & Carmella in Mixed Match Challenge Season 2 Finals at WWE TLC, presented globally on Facebook Watch and on the award-winning WWE Network, Sunday night at 7 ET / 4 PT.”

The winning team will receive the #30 spots in the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches come next year at this event. Also, they will receive an all-expenses paid vacation to anywhere in the world.

Injured SmackDown Star Cleared To Return, Elias Mocks Bobby Lashley

Injured SmackDown Star Cleared To Return

SmackDown Star Sin Cara has been away from WWE programming for a few months now due to an injury but it appears that he may be gearing up for a return now.

PWinsider is reporting that Sin Cara has been cleared to return to the ring by the medical staff and he has been spending time at Performance Center recently while preparing for his comeback.

Sin Cara lost in a match to Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas during the Extreme Rules PPV earlier this year and then in mid-August, it was reported that he has undergone a knee surgery.

Elias Mocks Bobby Lashley

Bobby Lashley’s return to the WWE hasn’t played out like many were expecting. There are people who believe that his persona has been lacking charisma and it appears Elias has heard this talk too.

Lashley recently took a shot at Elias saying that he will defeat him at the upcoming TLC PPV and replying to him, the NXT Star said that he has been trying to make Bobby relevant but at TLC he will put the Raw Star behind him:

As we noted before, earlier there was talk of WWE converting Baron Corbin vs. Braun Strowman match into a multi-person fight but it appears that they are going with one on one bouts instead.

Report: Braun Strowman To Be At TLC, Medical Status Still Unclear

Braun Strowman hasn’t been seen on WWE Television in past few weeks and apart from a small update about his surgery, WWE has mostly been silent on the situation.

With the company providing no updates on his condition even with only days remaining to the TLC PPV, a lot of people had started wondering if he will even be at the show, but we now know that he will at least attend the event.

Pwinsider is reporting that the Monster Among Men is at the very least slated to be at the upcoming PPV. Though whether or not he will be wrestling at the event is still a mystery.

Braun Strowman has been away from WWE programming since the November 19th episode of Raw where Baron Corbin, Bobby Lashley, and Drew McIntyre unleashed a vicious three on one attack on him.

This angle was designed to hide a real-life injury Strowman was dealing with and later in the week, WWE had reported that Braun will require surgery.

He underwent the surgery next week and earlier reports suggested that if he is not ready to compete at the show, we could see a one-sided bout with the former Wyatt Family Member dominating the General Manager elect.

How true these speculations turn out to be will only be revealed on Sunday but for now, we atleast know that Braun Strowman will be present for the PPV.

Mixed Match Challenge Finals Set For WWE TLC

A new match has been announced for the upcoming WWE TLC PPV. As seen on this week’s episode of Mixed Match Challenge, two semi-final matches took place as R-Truth and Carmella beat The Miz and Asuka while Jinder Mahal and Alicia Fox beat Apollo Crews and Bayley. Now, R-Truth and Carmella will take on Jinder Mahal and Alicia Fox in the finals at the TLC show.

WWE presents the TLC pay-per-view event on Sunday, December 16th, 2018  in San Jose, California at the SAP Center that will air on the WWE Network. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship is expected to headline TLC. Here is the updated card:
