“Filthy” Tom Lawlor Breaks Hand In MMA Fight

MLW’s Tom Lawlor broke his hand in an MMA fight last night. Lawlor dropped a decision to Deron Winn for Golden Boy MMA’s PPV debut. The bout was the semi main-event behind Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz III. Multiple sources are reporting Lawlor suffered the injury sometime in the second round.

It was Lawlor’s first fight since March of 2016. He was suspended for 2 years after dropping a decision to Corey Anderson in his last UFC fight.

Lawlor was scheduled to face Simon Gotch at MLW’s Fusion tapings in Miami next month. As of yet, there is no word on if Lawlor’s injury will impact any of his wrestling bookings.

Tom Lawlor MMA/Wrestling Career

Lawlor did some pro-wrestling before beginning his pro MMA career in 2007. He returned to wrestling recently during his 2.5 years away from MMA. Lawlor stopped wrestling when he signed with the UFC in 2008, however. At one point Lawlor was a ranked middleweight but the promotion released him following his USADA suspension.

Since returning to wrestling, Lawlor has made a big impact for Major League Wrestling. He won the promotion’s first ever Battle Riot and is scheduled for an MLW World Title shot at their first annual Super Fight in Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena.

Tom Lawlor ‘MMA Dojo Challenge’ Announced For MLW Fusion

Tom Lawlor returns to the cage this Friday night on MLW Fusion.

In recent weeks, a feud has been escalating between Lawlor’s Team Filthy faction and Col. Robert Parker’s Stud Stable. Lawlor issued a challenge for a member of the Stud Stable to step into his world for an MMA Dojo Challenge. Col. Parker accepted the challenge. He’ll be sending the biggest athlete he manages: super-heavyweight Mike Parrow.

The Dojo Challenge will be held from Jungle MMA & Fitness in Orlando, which is owned and operated by Team Filthy member Seth Petruzelli.

Tune in to MLW FUSION this Friday night on beIN SPORTS to witness this unique contest.

Tom Lawlor In MLW

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor has been one of the standout performers in MLW since the promotion re-launched last year. He is the leader of Team Filthy, which consists of Simon Gotch and Seth Petruzelli.

Lawlor recently won MLW Battle Riot, which earned a shot at the MLW World Heavyweight Championship “anytime, anywhere.”

The MMA & pro wrestling hybrid fighter was released from UFC earlier this week. “Today I was informed that I will be released by the UFC despite my USADA suspension being nearly over and my previous requests for a release being denied,” said Lawlor. While the timing is unexpected, hopefully, this opens the doors for me to continue with my mixed martial arts career as well as in the squared circle.”

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor Released By UFC

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor was only two months away from his two-year suspension from the UFC being lifted. However, instead of preparing for a grand comeback to the light heavyweight division, the company released him instead.

Lawlor was suspended from the UFC on October 10th, 2016, after failing a USADA drug test for Ostarine, a banned substance and member of the SARM group. The UFC, however, did not release him, so Lawlor segued to pro wrestling, intending to return to MMA once the suspension had been served.

Lawlor has been wrestling on the independent circuit, including Major League Wrestling (MLW). As the leader of the Team Filthy stable, Lawlor recently won MLW Battle Riot and earned a shot at the MLW World Heavyweight Championship anytime, anywhere.

Coffee Culprit

Though the Ostarine amount found in his system was low, Lawlor couldn’t find an explanation as to what caused the test to turn out positive, going so far as to test his coffee in an attempt to understand how it could have happened.

Lawlor, 35, had an MMA record of 10-6 with one no contest, and a 6-5 UFC record. His last fight to take place for the company was on March 6th, 2016, where he lost to UFC ranked No. 6 Corey Anderson via decision.

Interestingly, Lawlor puts forth in an official statement that he had previously asked for his release during the suspension period, but that these requests were “denied.”

“All things come to an end and it was inevitable that so would my time in UFC,” said Lawlor. “Today I was informed that I will be released by the UFC despite my USADA suspension being nearly over and my previous requests for a release being denied. While the timing is unexpected, hopefully, this opens the doors for me to continue with my mixed martial arts career as well as in the squared circle (pro wrestling). Combat sports is one of my life’s great loves and I look forward to showing and sharing that with the fans as soon as possible.”

Tom Lawlor found popularity in the UFC, in particular during weigh-ins, where he would come out in different costumes that paid homage to a range of different people and characters, including Hulk Hogan, Dan Severn, and The Shockmaster.

He had experience within the squared circle prior to UFC, garnering a WWE tryout before being selected for the cast of The Ultimate Fighter Season 8. Before that, he had won three NCWA small college national championships in wrestling whilst at the University of Central Florida.

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor Talks MLW: One-Shot, MMA vs. Wrestling, Possibly Working For WWE

UFC fighter and pro wrestler “Filthy” Tom Lawlor recently appeared as a guest on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast to promote next week’s big MLW: One-Shot event.

Here are some highlights of what Lawlor said about:

On wrestling Jeff Cobb at the upcoming MLW: One-Shot event: “Jeff Cobb is a fight that I’ve been looking forward to since I returned to the professional wrestling squared circle. He’s a guy that I’ve enjoyed watching and has been making a name for himself not only in the US and the Independent scene but throughout the world as a top notch talent. He comes from an amateur wrestling background and is a former Olympian and has the same aura of legitimacy that I do and think it was a natural matchup and I am glad it is happening in MLW.”

On returning to the pro wrestling world: “This is something that I’ve looked forward to do in being able to get back into the ring and luckily I am able to get back in there and I feel like I am living in a fantasy camp. I always think I am really here in this show and am I really wrestling (for instance) Kyle O’ Reilly or really wrestling Eddie Kingston right now so it has been really awesome for me.”

On if he prefers working pro wrestling or competing in MMA: “Either way honestly, I had a match against Mike Bailey who is a much larger guy but he does a lot of high flying and I had a blast doing that. It honestly doesn’t really matter to me but one of the biggest challenges to me is trying to fit my style with somebody else’s to a certain extent. To go work against a guy like Matt Riddle or a Dan Severn and somebody with that same style it is not too tough to plan out. When you have to work a high flyer and you are trying to do your submission game you have to work all that stuff in together so that is kind of the big challenge but it also keeps me motivated as well.

“Some crowds know what they are getting into and some crowds are there just to see professional wrestling. I have to read the crowd a little bit and see what I can get away with and as far as the submission game and that kind of style and I adjust from there. Some places love it and some places hate it.”

On if he plans to return to the UFC after his suspension is over: “Honestly I don’t know. My weight has kind of stabilized and now that I am a little bit older, I may be able to cut down to 85 again and I am going to have to kind of take a look at the landscape in a year. Maybe I won’t even be wanting to go back to the UFC. Maybe I will have opportunities in wrestling that will keep me there which I am hopefully looking forward to that happening.”

On if he feels WWE is in his future: “The schedule is not really appealing. In the long run when you factor in the money and the costs associated with traveling all year. I am at a point in my life where I can make some money doing multiple things and I can teach mixed martial arts and I can teach jiu jitsu and I can be involved with stuff like that and also fight and wrestle at the same time and be involved with all those other things. I don’t need to be on the road all year and I don’t desire that lifestyle so I am kind of happy essentially with being in the Independent scene but like I said I am not happy with where I am at right now (work wise).”

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor To Face Olympian Jeff Cobb At MLW: One-Shot

MLW has been teasing another notable competitor for the upcoming MLW: One-Shot live event and once again, they delivered in a big way.

MLW announced this week that UFC veteran turned pro wrestler “Filthy” Tom Lawlor has signed on to face Olympic wrestler Jeff Cobb at One-Shot, which takes place on Thursday, October 5th from Gilt Nightclub in Orlando, FL.

Upon hearing the news, Jeff Cobb gave his thoughts on the upcoming match. “I’ve seen Lawlor in the Octagon and respect what he’s done in the UFC but sometimes he gets a little carried away having fun.  If he tries to clown around with me, I’ll drop him on his head. I take this sport very seriously.”

Lawlor, a prolific finisher inside the Octagon, said, “I’m gonna chew him up like corn on the cob.”

The following matches are now confirmed for MLW: One-Shot:

  • Ricochet vs. Shane “Swerve” Strickland
  • MVP vs. Sami Callihan
  • Jeff Cobb vs. “Filthy” Tom Lawlor
