  • Ken Shamrock Speaks On Ultimate Warrior’s Passing, His Memories Of Him

The following are highlights of a new Roman Show interview with Ken Shamrock:

On the passing of Ultimate Warrior: “Anytime you know of someone who passes away is always a sad feeling. You understand that this is stuff that happens in life. You wish the family and friends a little bit of comfort. He is in a better place. Its really the people that are left behind you want to pray for.”

On his first time meeting Warrior: “First memory is a funny one. I was in Gene Anderson’s organization and WWF came to town they brought me in for three house show. I worked two matches with Barry Horowitz and one with Mega Man. The two with Barry were good and the one with Mega Man was a horrible match. I went to the locker room they told me ‘don’t worry about it that guy is as green as you are’.” The Ultimate Warrior had come had his match. He sprinted to the ring, he hit the ropes, beats the guy and sprints all the way through the locker room and immediately sits down. As am talking he passes out. I said wow what happened. One of the Anderson brothers said don’t worry he probably just got gassed. I thought he died. That was the first time I met him. After that he wouldn’t talk much. He was nice to me. I respected him. He was a man of few words. I respected him.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: Thoughts On Nancy Grace Segment, ESPN’s Colin Cowherd, More

The following are highlights from a new Jim Ross blog:

On the Nancy Grace segment on Ultimate Warrior: “The polarizing Nancy Grace of HLN really was made to look ill informed and poorly prepared by her staff Wednesday night on her report of the death of the Ultimate Warrior. So much erroneous info was reported as fact that I actually felt bad for her. I’d like to believe that Ms Grace is not a mean person but she let down by her producers and research people notwithstanding those who wrote her script for her teleprompter.”

“For Ms Grace to implicate Owen Hart into any drug or steroid scandal is egregious and appalling.”

On mainstream media coverage of pro wrestling: “Pro wresting/sports entertainment is given little credit by the mainstream news media and, as we have seen, seemingly the only time the genre is mentioned is when there is a tragedy. I never heard anyone talking about the economic impact that WrestleMania had on NOLA or the hundreds of Make A Wish interactions that are granted, the work WWE does with the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer organization, the support done in conjunction with the United States Armed Forces, among other great causes.”

“Good news isn’t news in today’s society or so it seems. That’s truly a damn shame.”

On ESPN’s Colin Cowherd: “Same goes for Colin Cowherd of ESPN who has had the basic same stance on pro wrestling since he became a shock jock-like TV character on ESPN. Cowherd plays the role of a broadcasting antagonist on television, IE a heel, and he can’t be positive about ‘rasslin’ or show compassion for a dead man’s family as it would apparently adversely affect his show biz persona.”

“Cowherd is a talented guy and likely a decent man but his pro wresting bias act is getting old and stale and comparing today’s product to the tragedies of a decade or two ago isn’t good journalism and make Cowherd look like he’s grasping for ratings with heat seeking remarks.”

  • Remembering The Ultimate Warrior

After one of the most exciting, memorable weekends in recent years, the wrestling world was rocked on Tuesday night with the tragic news of The Ultimate Warrior’s death. I wanted to take a few days to let the news sink in before writing a memorial article about the loss of another one of my childhood heroes. The initial shock is beginning to subside and now we’re left with shattered pieces to make sense of.

Warrior was a very controversial figure – in and out of the wrestling business. When he first burst onto the national wrestling scene in the late 80’s, Warrior stood out like a sore thumb. Admist the landscape of muscled-up, bombastic WWF superstars of the day, never before had we seen anything like him. The face paint, the freakishly muscular physique, the unprecedented intensity in the ring, the otherworldly promos. He was a real life super hero that captured the imaginations and inspired millions of people around the globe.

In the ring, Warrior was no master technician. He’d get ‘blown up’ after his sprint to the ring and rope shaking (like you wouldn’t?). His move set was limited. He required technically superior opponents to carry him to great matches. That said, his WrestleMania matches with Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage are amongst the greatest in WrestleMania history and Warrior is the only man to hold pinfall victories over both men on WWE’s grandest stage.

Warrior got a lot of heat for being a loner backstage. Much the Road Warriors, his a meteoric rise required a lot of top talent to step aside and get obliterated by this colorful force of nature. He spent the majority of the 1990’s embroiled in a bitter legal battles with Vince McMahon and WWE over the rights to his character and likeness.

After his in ring career, he became a public speaker and had some very conservative political views, making very unpleasant comments about homosexuals and Arabs. He tweeted some pretty ugly stuff about late actors Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman, both of whom died from drug overdoses. He also had bitter feuds via social media with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Ted DiBiase and Jake Roberts.

Warrior finally made peace with WWE over the past 18 months. He returned to the WWE Universe last weekend for the first time in nearly two decades. After years of being trashed by the company and his peers at every turn, Warrior came back to have his legacy portrayed in a positive light and to be celebrated for the legend he was.

When he brought his two young daughters out with him on stage at the Hall of Fame ceremony and greeted his wife and mother in the crowd, it was a side of him few people ever saw. He told his daughters in the audience that as incredible as his Ultimate Warrior character was, the greatest thing he’ll ever do. Touching stuff that humanized him for the first time in front of his audience.

His appearance on RAW is absolutely haunting in light of his death the following day – but there was a common theme to his Hall of Fame speech and RAW promo: humility. Warrior profusely thanked his fans and the WWE employees behind the scenes for making his character what it grew to be. He talked about the talent of the current locker room and encouraged the WWE Universe to get behind today’s top stars so that one day they would become legends themselves.

Had Warrior died 2 weeks ago or 2 years ago, the impact of the loss would simply not be as profound. It is truly a blessing that he to got to return the spotlight one last time, make peace with estranged friends and cement his legacy his way. Since his passing, there has been a tremendous outpour of grief and love for Warrior from his colleagues, many of whom he had long standing beef with (Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon in particular).

It’s a sad reality of life that we simply do not appreciate things enough until they are gone. There is a lesson to be learned here.

For all of his flaws and quirks, Warrior was a MAN. He possessed an unbelievable belief in his abilities and potential, as well as a passion for life that we should all strive for.

The Ultimate Warrior character has been immortalized and will be celebrated by fans around the world for decades to come.

Goodbye, Warrior. Rest in Peace and thank you for the memories.

    Always Believe.

Bret Hart Blogs On The Passing Of The Ultimate Warrior

WWE Hall Of Famer Bret “The Hitman” Hart recently posted the following blog on his official Facebook page regarding the passing of Ultimate Warrior:

“I’m deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Jim Helwig, The Ultimate Warrior. I wish I’d been kinder to him in the last moments that we had this past weekend at WrestleMania 30.

We did cross paths once or twice, but we were all so busy. I never went out of my way to see him, but if I could… I’d tell him he looked good. He looked content, and he looked like he’d finally found happiness within his children and his wife. He never ever harmed me nor did we really work with one another… I wish we had.

His final ring promo breaks my heart. I’ve many fond memories of times we shared, only now do they pile up in my head. I’d also tell him that he was right, he never was such a bad guy. My thoughts are with his wife and children. I never thought his time would be so short.

I know one thing, I will never forget him.

Diamond Dallas Page issued the following statement today regarding his appearance on the controversial Nancy Grace segment on The Ultimate Warrior last night.

“I went on Nancy Grace last night expecting to discuss Warrior the man. Had I known the only topic discussed would be steroids I would not have participated. At the time I was also unaware of the list that was shown to the viewing audience. To imply that all of the wrestlers on that list died from steroids was wrong and for that they owe the families an apology. Again, my only intention was to discuss Warrior the man and share some stories about how dedicated he was to the wrestling business. I am saddened that was not what happened and my thoughts remain with his family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Warriors beautiful family, his wife Dana and their daughters Mattigan and Indiana. No words are strong enough to express my feeling for them at this time.

I was honored to be able to spend the weekend with Warrior and his family at WrestleMania 30 and have never seen a prouder father or more loving family.

Video: Nancy Grace Covers Warrior’s Death, Says Owen Died From Drugs

Cable news host Nancy Grace spoke about the Ultimate Warrior’s death on her show on Wednesday night and right off the bat, the narrative was that pro wrestling has lost another legend due to drugs.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen wrestlers die young. Nancy Grace talks with Diamond Dallas Page, a former professional wrestler, about the death of Hellwig and other wrestlers.”

Grace continuously stated that “rumors are swirling” that steroids were a factor in Warrior’s death, and showed a scrolling list of wrestlers who died young and even mistakenly said that Owen Hart died from drugs. In fact, numerous people on the list died from circumstances completely unrelated to drugs:

    • Mark Curtis (Stomach cancer, referee)
    • Brady Boone (Car accident)
    • Joey Marella (Car accident, referee)
    • Chris Candido (blood clot following surgery)
    • DJ Peterson (motorcycle accident)

Her segment set off a huge backlash on Twitter, with several of Owen’s friends pointing out the hurtful inaccuracy and slamming Grace:

Sting Comments On Warrior’s Death, Posts Rare Photo Of Them Together

Sting posted the following on his Facebook page this morning:

“Mourning the loss of Jim Hellwig. I don’t believe anyone has ever published this picture before today. The snapshot was taken two days before Thanksgiving in 1985, as we prepared to leave my house in Newhall, California and embark on a career in wrestling.

Jim always challenged me to strive at being the best, and I’ll forever be grateful for the encouragement and motivation he provided.

I was looking forward to catching up with him, and I’m saddened we didn’t have that opportunity before he passed. My heart goes out to his wife Dana and their two daughters, and they will remain in my prayers.”

Audio: Triple H Talks About Warrior’s Death, Legacy & Career Highlight

WWE COO Triple H spoke to ESPN this week about the tragic death of the Ultimate Warrior. During the interview, Triple H revealed that it was an 18 month process getting Warrior to come home and agree to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

WWE’s Reaction To The Tragic News: “We’re devastated. It was such a wonderful homecoming, such a great celebration of an iconic career with the Hall of Fame, and the appearance at WrestleMania, and the return of the Ultimate Warrior character in-ring on Monday Night Raw. The talent were so happy, Warrior was beside himself so excited, and then to have it just come to an end a day later is just shocking and tragic and devastating to all of us.”

Warrior’s Legacy: “Warrior’s legacy, as he said in his Hall of Fame induction speech, his most important accomplishment is what he leaves behind, which is his wife Dana, and his two beautiful daughters, Mattigan and Indiana. For him, that’s what he would say. As for his career, for him, the belief in the Ultimate Warrior and that Warrior mentality, his belief is that if you believe in yourself, and that you work hard, and you persevere, anything is possible. He believed that so much so that he signed everything that he did – whether an autograph or a contract – with ‘Always Believe. Warrior.'”

WWE & Warrior reconciling: “It was a wonderful opportunity for us. And we’re grateful we had the chance. For me, it was an 18-month process with Warrior; an 18-month healing process. It doesn’t happen overnight, but I think both sides have grown. He had grown as a man, we had grown as people and a company, and it was time. It was time to move on and just let the business things that had gone in the past be the past. He is so deserving of being immortalized in the Hall of Fame and to have his moment in front of his legions and legions of fans. I can tell you that that meant the world to us and, I know personally, it meant the world to him.”

Warrior’s Career Highlight: “The whole thing is bittersweet because it was the greatest moment he probably could have had. I think if you asked him a career highlight, many people would say it’s WrestleMania 6 at the Toronto Skydome when he beat Hulk Hogan for the WWF Title. I don’t know. I think he would have disagreed with that now and said the greatest moment of his career was three days ago being inducted into the Hall of Fame with Mattigan and Indiana walking him on-stage.”

Mick Foley Blogs About Warrior’s Death, Regrets HOF Tweet About Warrior

Mick Foley has posted a new blog on Facebook talking about the Ultimate Warrior’s death, including his admission that he regrets tweeting the following during Ultimate Warrior’s Hall of Fame speech:

“Personally, I think my #WWEHOF speech last year may have been better than this one.”

The tweet got some backlash from Warrior fans, to which Foley responded:

    “Lighten up #LittleWariors – I expressed a polite personal opinion in a non-definitive way.”

“I did like @UltimateWarrior’s idea of a #JimmyMirandaAward  – great way to pay tribute to Jimmy’s memory and honor unsung heroes in @WWE”

Here’s what Foley wrote on Facebook about Warrior:

    “WORDS OF A WARRIOR

When I first heard the news of the Ultimate Warrior’s passing – from my oldest son – my first thoughts were of his precious daughters, and how their father – whose love for them was clear – had been taken away from them far to early in their lives.

My second thought was about the foolish tweet I sent out during Warrior’s Hall of Fame induction speech – and how badly I wish I could have taken those words back. Maybe they seemed harmless at the time, but in retrospect, the fact that my final words about Warrior were negative ones has had me feeling pretty bad these last 24 hours.

I did not dislike Warrior. I got along fine with him in 1996, and years later, during a “Legends Rountable” focusing on “Heatseekers”, I was good-naturedly kidded by my fellow Roundtable guests for having nothing negative to say about Warrior, Paul Heyman or Buff Bagwell.

His promo style was loved by some, loathed by others for their seemingly nonsensical style. But Warrior’s promos were unique and intense – and no one has done anything quite like them, before or sense. But in his final promo, he was anything but nonsensical. He was profound, and eerily prophetic.

“No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own,” he told the audience. “Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others and makes them believe deeper in something that’s larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by the storytellers — by the loyalty, by the memory of those who honor him, and make the running the man did live forever.”

A brilliant statement, but a bittersweet moment to wantch after the fact – knowing how close the subject hit to home. I was thrilled to see someone I knew at the 3:10 moment of the video clip – my onw daughter, reacting to the historic moment – smiling, clapping; making sure that at least one Foley gave this iconic figure – and a well-deserved inductee in to the WWE Hall of Fame the goodbye I should have had for him.”

  • Audio: Bret Hart Comments About Warrior’s Death, Steroid Use

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart appeared on Calgary’s CJAY 92 on Wednesday morning and commented on the death of the Ultimate Warrior. Bret said that he crossed paths several times with Warrior over the weekend and could tell that Warrior’s health was not great.

“He seemed good, he seemed happy, for sure. But, I did get a sense that maybe his health wasn’t up to what it was – maybe he wasn’t as healthy as he could have been or used to be. He seemed a little bit frail. Sometimes that could be nerves and stuff like that. But, he seemed a little less indestructible than he used to be.”

While Warrior was always very health conscious with a bodybuilder mentality, Bret did imply that chronic steroid use could be a factor in his health failing.

“He was always a pretty health conscience guy, but I don’t think it would be a surprise to know that he took steroids for a long time and I don’t know if he ever stopped… A lot of these wrestlers who have taken steroids for long stretches of time have found that it enlarges their heart and it causes a lot of problems. There are a lot of question marks about whether steroids have been a direct link to wrestlers especially in that age group.”

He added that Warrior had been tough to deal with in previous years and due to the way his character was portrayed.

“I think he’s a nice guy now going through a lot of changes in his life. It was a hard job for him being champion a long time ago. I think he ended up resenting the business and a lot of guys in it. In a lot of ways, he kind of turned his back on the business because he wasn’t happy with how things worked out for him.”

    RIP Ultimate Warrior

More details are coming in regarding the final days of the Ultimate Warrior.

WWE had a camera crew following Warrior and his family around during the entire weekend. The footage was shot for a future project looking at Warrior’s return to the WWE Universe.

Warrior and his family did not stay at the Roosevelt Hotel with the rest of the WWE talent. The company rented a house locally for Warrior and his family and had a car service shuttle them to and from the Hall of Fame ceremony, WrestleMania and RAW.

According to sources who were backstage at the Hall of Fame ceremony, Warrior was very friendly when approached, but also quiet and somewhat reserved. Several people commented on Warrior sweating a lot and appearing physically frail, despite his muscular stature.

TMZ.com reports that an eye witness saw Warrior clutching his chest moments before he collapsed at the Gainey Suites Hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Warrior suffered a “catastrophic medical event” and so far, there is no evidence of drugs or alcohol playing a factor in his death. An investigation is underway and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy on Thursday.
