NBC Universal Names New President For USA Network

NBC Universal continues to shake up its’ top-line executive staff, as they have announced a new president for USA Network, which is the current United States television home of WWE RAW.

Chris McCumber, who up until recently has been the co-president of USA Network since 2011, is now the official sole president of the channel. McCumber’s former co-president, Jeff Wachtel, is moving to a newly-created executive role within NBC Universal.

McCumber will continue to report to Bonnie Hammer, who is WWE’s long-time television partner, as well as the head of NBC Universal Cable.

USA Boasts Four of the Top Ten Dramas Across All Cable, Including Freshman Series Graceland

NEW YORK – August 26, 2013 – For an unprecedented 8th year in a row, USA is summer’s #1 cable network in total viewers (2.95 million), P25-54 (1.15 million) and P18-49 (1.08 million). USA’s win was driven in great part by its powerful mix of originals, WWE Raw and syndicated programming. The network was home to four of the summer’s top ten scripted series including newcomer GRACELAND, as well as Burn Notice, Suits, and Royal Pains.

Freshman drama GRACELAND, about the adrenaline-fueled world of a diverse group of undercover agents whose lies are their lives, was one of the summer’s top new scripted series on cable. It attracted 3.83 million total viewers, 1.72 million P25-54, 1.68 million and P18-49. GRACELAND registered particularly high double-digit growth in L7 lifts of +87% P18-49, +83% P25-54 +89% P18-34 and +72% in P2+ on average season-to-date. The season finale is set for Thursday, September 12 at 10/9c.

The final season of Burn Notice continued to dominate in ratings. The Emmy-Award nominated drama drew 5.36 million total viewers, 2.22 million P25-54 and 2.035 million P18-49. The series finale is slated for Thursday, September 12 at 9/8c.

Fan favorites Suits and Royal Pains consistently performed on cable’s top ten list. The third season of Suits, about one of Manhattan’s top lawyers who hires a brilliant unmotivated college dropout, reached 5 million total viewers, 2.18 million P25-54 and 2.28 million P18-49. In its fifth season, Royal Pains, about a ‘go to doctor for hire’ in the Hamptons, garnered 5.23 million total viewers, 1.97 million P25-54 and 1.69 million P18-49.

WWE Raw continued to draw a massive audience with 4.5 total viewers, and 2 million in both P18-49 and P25-54.

NCIS was the most-watched “off-net” series on cable this summer, averaging 2.7 million total viewers while SVU was #3, averaging 2.1M viewers. No other off-net one hour series on cable averaged above 2 million total viewers this summer. NCIS and SVU were also the top off-net one-hours on cable among key demographics, as SVU averaged 776,000 18-49 / 778,000 25-54 and NCIS 687,000 / 833,000.

Fresh off a successful summer, USA breaks into the fall season with a powerful programming lineup, including NCIS: LOS ANGELES on September 23 and Modern Family on September 24. Hit original dramas White Collar and Covert Affairs also return on Thursday, October 17 at 9/8c and 10/9c, respectively. Additionally, USA introduces the special holiday season reality event, IT TAKES A CHOIR, on Sundays, beginning November 3 at 8/7c. The show follows the charming British choirmaster Gareth Malone as he unites unlikely groups of characters through the transformative power of music. And, the long-awaited two-hour special Psych: THE MUSICAL premieres Sunday, December 15 at 8/7c, following Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) as they dive into a world that’s equal parts mystery and melody to track down an escaped playwright mad man.

USA Network Touts Most Watched Quarter In Cable TV History

USA Network’s 3Q11 Most Watched Quarter In History In All of Cable Entertainment

NEW YORK – September 27, 2011 – USA continues to re-write the record books with the hottest 3rd quarter ever on cable, delivering more total viewers (3.51 million) than any network on cable ever has in a 3Q11. For the first time ever for cable entertainment network in any quarter, USA broke the 3.5 million mark in total viewers.

USA sizzled this quarter, shining above every cable competitor in P25-54 (1.45 million, +38% over #2 TNT), P18-49 (1.35 million, 46% over #2 History Channel), total viewers (3.51 million, +31% over #2 Disney Channel), and households (2.67 million, +40% over #2 TNT). USA was the only cable network to average over 1 million in P18-49, 3 million total viewers, or 2 million households was one of only two with over half a million P18-34 (584,000). USA earned the top household coverage rating in 3Q11’s basic cable prime (2.67, +0.76 over #2 TNT).

No cable network has ever seen as large a margin of victory over the #2 network in any quarter than USA did in 3Q11 in households while USA’s victory in P18-49 was second only to what was seen in 2Q97 and those in P25-54 and total viewers were the largest since 1Q09.

USA is up +5% in P25-54, +7% in P18-49, +4% in P18-34, +8% in total viewers, and +9% in households in 3Q11 than in 3Q10 using parallel Most Current data year to year.

USA won the total day crown this quarter as well in P25-54 (601,000, 15% over #2 TNT) and P18-49 (575,000, 9% over #2 Nickelodeon).

USA was the house of hits this quarter with seven original series each averaging over 2 million in P25-54, 1.5 million in P18-49, half a million in P18-34, 5 million total viewers, and 4 million households. Further, most of these titles have over 2.5 million in P25-54, 2.5 million in P18-49, 1 million in P18-34, 6 million total viewers, and 4.5 million households.

USA’s slate of hits this quarter easily outshines the performances of originals on either TNT or History Channel, averaging 2.90 million in P25-54 (+18% more than TNT’s / +43% more than History Channel), 2.66 million in P18-49 (+31% / +43%), 1.15 million in P18-34 (+73% / +42%), 6.36 million total viewers (+6% / +67%), and 4.77 million households (+8% / +78%).

COVERT AFFAIRS and WHITE COLLAR were the top two series on cable Tuesdays this quarter among total viewers (CA 6.91 million / WC 5.83 million) and households (5.11 million / 4.35 million) while COVERT AFFAIRS was #1 among P25-54 (3.20 million). No other scripted series on television with new episodes Tuesdays this quarter delivered over 3 million in P25-54 (3.20 million / 2.70 million), 2 million in P18-49 (2.89 million / 2.60 million), 5 million total viewers, or 4 million households.

With Royal Pains and NECCESSARY ROUGHNESS, USA was the only cable network with a show delivering over 7 million total viewers (RP 7.22 million / NR 5.62 million) or 4 million households (5.40 million / 4.32 million) Wednesday nights this quarter. No other network aired a scripted series on television Wednesdays this quarter to over 2 million in P25-54 (3.28 million / 2.51 million), 2 million in P18-49 (2.96 million / 2.29 million), or 1 million in P18-34 (1.23 million / 870,000).

Burn Notice and Suits were the top two scripted series on television Thursdays this quarter among P25-54 (BN 3.14 million / Suits 2.97 million), P18-49 (2.88 million / 2.84 million), and P18-34 (1.28 million / 1.35 million) and the top scripted series on cable for the night in total viewers (6.73 million / 6.12 million), and households (4.94 million / 4.62 million). These were the #2 and #3 scripted originals on television this quarter in all of television for M18-49.

IN PLAIN SIGHT was the only ad-supported scripted series on television Sundays this quarter to deliver over 3 million total female viewers and was second only to ABC in this demo when it aired this quarter in its Sunday 10pm timeslot. IPS outperformed CBS head to head this quarter for P18-49, P25-54, P18-34, total viewers, and households. Season 4 of In Plain Sight grew +14% in P25-54, +17% in P18-49, +19% in P18-34, +11% in total viewers, and +13% in households from Season 3.

WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW made USA the #1 entertainment network in all of television in its Monday 9pm-11pm time period among M18-34 and total males, coming in behind only FOX for M18-49 entertainment viewers as well as beating CBS in P18-49 and P18-34. WWE Raw delivered +3% more total viewers and+ 8% more P18-34 in 3Q11 than it had in 3Q10.

USA Executive & WWE Ally Bonnie Hammer Gets Big Promotion

The LA Times is reporting that USA Network President and longtime WWE ally Bonnie Hammer is getting a big promotion as part of the corporate merger between NBC Universal (parent company of USA Network) and Comcast. Hammer, who is currently in charge of USA and SyFy networks, will now also run E! Entertainment Television and the G-4 network.

Bonnie Hammer has been working with WWE since the late 1990s and was instrumental in bringing WWE back to the USA Network when its contract with Spike TV came up.

Hammer gave the green light to bringing ECW, NXT and SmackDown to Syfy.

Hammer has a track record of creating synergy among the NBC Universal properties. Having a strong ally in such a powerful position at NBC Universal could certainly be beneficial to WWE.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – December 10, 2009 – USA continued its dominance over the cable landscape in 2009, delivering more primetime P25-54, total viewers, and households than any cable network (basic or pay) in history, while delivering more P18-49, P18-34 and the largest household coverage rating ever in basic cable. For a fourth straight year, USA was the #1 network in cable prime, delivering more P25-54 (1.50 million, +36% over #2 TNT) and P18-49 (1.38 million, +29% over #2 ESPN) than any other network. USA was also the top network for 2009 in cable prime among total viewers (3.29 million, +29% over #2 Disney Channel,) households (2.44 million, +31% over #2 Disney Channel) and P18-34 (613,000, +3% over #2 TBS); the network also delivered the highest household coverage rating (2.47, +0.56 over #2 Disney Channel).

Among basic cable networks, USA enjoyed the widest margins of victory ever over the second ranked network among P25-54, P18-49, and households and the best since 1994 in total viewers.

USA also won the total day crown in 2009, delivering more P25-54 (706,000, +9% over #2 TNT) and P18-49 (656,000, +9% over #2 TNT) than any other cable network. No cable network has ever averaged as many P25-54 over the course of a year’s total day as USA has in 2009. This was USA’s first total day victory in P25-54 since 1995 and its first P18-49 victory since 1999.

USA performed like a broadcast network this year, beating the CW by double digits in P25-54 (+61%), P18-49 (+33%), total viewers (+85%), and household delivery (+79%) in prime (Mon-Sun 8P-11P). This marks USA’s second year beating a broadcaster among P25-54 and P18-49, a feat no other cable network has accomplished.

USA is the home to seven successful original scripted series: BURN NOTICE, ROYAL PAINS, WHITE COLLAR, PSYCH, IN PLAIN SIGHT, LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and the record-setting final season of MONK. Most of the Top 50 P25-54 and P18-49 entertainment telecasts of 2009 were the above USA originals (28 of the top 50 P25-54 and 26 of the top P18-49), as well as the most watched weekly series on cable, WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW. No other network placed more than 8 telecasts in the year’s top 50 for either demo.

* USA’s BURN NOTICE and ROYAL PAINS were the top two original series in basic cable prime this year and the only ones to draw over 3.5 million in P25-54 or 3 million in P18-49. These two series claimed nine of the top ten P25-54 scripted telecasts in basic cable prime for 2009, shutting out prior powerhouse TNT’s “The Closer.”

* BURN NOTICE’s 2009 performance made it the most watched scripted series ever in basic cable among P18-49 (3.27 million). BURN NOTICE also claimed the year’s top spot among P25-54 (3.61 million).

* Proving again that USA is the home to new hits, the network’s ROYAL PAINS was the #1 new original series of the year, ranking second to BURN NOTICE, for P25-54 (3.56 million), P18-49 (3.15 million). ROYAL PAINS also came in second among total viewers (7.47 million), and households (5.29 million).

* ROYAL PAINS was the top-ranked new series in cable history, delivering more P25-54, P18-49, P18-34, and total viewers than the freshman year of any other scripted series in history.

* WHITE COLLAR debuted in style, coming in second only to sister series ROYAL PAINS among the year’s newest cable originals in delivering P25-54, P18-49, total viewers, and households.

* After eight successful seasons on the air, the series finale of the USA Original MONK set records as the most-watched basic cable original drama series telecast of all time. Hitting series highs for its final episode, a rare feat in the TV landscape shared by only an elite group of iconic series, the finale brought in 9.4 million total viewers, beating the prior series high by +37%

* WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW drew more P25-54 (2.63 million), total viewers (5.48 million), and households (3.70 million) than in any year since 2002. WWE RAW dominates cable in its Monday 9P-11P timeslot, drawing more P18-49, P25-54, P18-34, total viewers, and households than any other entertainment network. WWE RAW grew in every category in 2009, capturing +9% more P25-54, +4% more P18-49, +9% total viewers, and +12% households than in 2008.

* The three most watched acquired series in cable prime in 2009 were USA’s NCIS, LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, and HOUSE. These three titles drew more P25-54 (NCIS 1.43 million / SVU 1.20 million / House 1.18 million), total viewers (NCIS 3.50 million / SVU 2.73 million / House 2.48 million), and households (NCIS 2.69 million / SVU 2.19 million / House 1.90 million) than any other acquired property on cable. These were the only acquired series to draw over 2.5 million total viewers, or 2 million households.

Jesse Ventura Hosting Next Week, RAW On USA Until 2014

— WWE has announced that former Navy Seal and Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura will host next week’s 3-hour Thanksgiving-themed edition of WWE Raw from Hershey, PA. Ventura will be promoting his new reality television show on the TruTV network, “Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura.”

— WWE and the USA Network issued a joint press release Monday announcing an extension of their cable television partnership that will keep WWE Raw on the network through 2014. “I couldn’t be happier about continuing one of the most successful collaborations in television history,” said NBC Universal Cable’s Bonnie Hammer. “Vince McMahon and his entire team are an invaluable part of the USA family.”

The press release also touted the success of the weekly guest host concept on RAW, noting that the roster of hosts, which includes “Shaquille O’Neal, Jeremy Piven, Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Barker, Snoop Dogg, Ben Roethlisberger and Rev. Al Sharpton,” has produced an across-the-board improvement in the show’s viewership. Since implementing the guest host strategy, the show has garnered “+11 % more total viewers, +16% more P12-17, +9% more P25-54, + 3% more P18-49 and +17% more households compared to the same time period last year.”
