Stephanie McMahon Speaks On Vince Receiving Death Threats

Before WWE became a global success, Vince McMahon’s competition with other American wrestling promoters was so fierce that he would receive death threats. Stephanie McMahon was recently at the Powerful Women Next Gen Summit in California where she told Fortune Magazine about her father’s stiff competition from other promoters.

“[Vince] was invading their territories, and getting better television coverage,” Stephanie said of WWE’s (then-WWF) expansion in the 1980’s. “He thought he had the better product, and ultimately, he did, and they didn’t take to kindly to that.”

It’s well-documented that other promoters had discussed the idea of having McMahon killed. Stephanie shared a story Vince had shared with her about someone threatening his life to his face.

“He told me a great story about a threat from a notorious gangster and being in this room, this old hotel, with the dark wooden panel walls and this big oversized man with a very unattractive face,” she said. “He was threatening my Dad’s life and my Dad was willing to stand up to him and all these different people to make his dreams come true.”

Stephanie also talks about delaying her book because it’s the first one from her family, and she wants to make it “bigger and better.” You can read her entire interview at Fortune.com.

Update On Indie Wrestling Being Added To The WWE Network

It looks like indie wrestling content is heading to the WWE Network. According to a report by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Vince McMahon is on the verge of deciding to add several “hot” indies to his network. There’s no word on when Vince is expected to officially make the call, but Meltzer expects that we’ll see some big changes on the WWE Network in the next few months.

WWE sent out some Fan Council surveys this year to gauge interest in indie wrestling on the WWE Network. The surveys specifically mentioned, Ring of Honor, EVOLVE, CZW. OVW, PWG, DGUSA and several others. One survey listed TNA.

One survey from this fall listed potential Network price points of $4.99, $9.99 and $14.99.

Vince McMahon, Triple H, Brian Kendrick & More Hype WWE 205 Live

– Both Vince McMahon and Triple H tweeted to promote tonight’s 205 Live premiere on the WWE Network:

– Below are more 205 Lve hype videos for tonight with Cruiserweight Champion Brian Kendrick and Tony Nese. Kendrick knocks the new cruiserweights for playing video games, saying they’re always in a hurry to get back to the hotel and play. Kendrick says they don’t appreciate the work that his generation put in and that’s why he has an advantage.

Nese says his loss in the WWE CWC was a fluke and he won’t lose like that again in 205 Live. He admits that he makes mistakes but says he capitalizes and gets better.

WATCH: The BBC Interviews Vince McMahon in His Office in 1985

This morning, the BBC Archive YouTube page posted a segment (or at least an excerpt thereof; it appears to be cut off) on the national expansion of the WWF from a 1985 episode of BBC Newsnight. Vince McMahon is the focus, and the feature has a rare glimpse of his old office in the WWF’s pre-Titan Tower office building. In the above clip, McMahon primarily addresses the differences between “being in the sports entertainment business” and “being in the wrestling business” as well as defending the WWF as wholesome family entertainment. NBC’s Dick Ebersol joins him in the latter, trying to stave off a legislative attack from New York State Senator Abe Bernstein, who was attempting to ban pro wrestling in the state.

Bernstein’s Senate Task Force on Professional Wrestling didn’t end up going anywhere, but the hearings got a fair bit of mainstream coverage, including in the New York Times. Irv Muchnick was in attendance and provided additional coverage in a subsequent letter to the paper, as well, noting that Bernstein spent much of the time trying to prove that pro wrestling is worked.

Vince McMahon & Goldberg Talk About Goldberg’s Return To The Ring

Jim Ross has penned a new article for Fox Sports looking at Bill Goldberg’s return to the ring this Sunday at Survivor Series. The article includes quotes from Goldberg himself and WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

“Goldberg vs Lesnar is married to the WWE2K17 video game where fantasy warfare meets reality,” Vince said. “It’s Ali vs Marciano, Mayweather vs Sugar Ray Leonard … Goldberg vs Lesnar.”

Vince also commented on the strong crowd reaction Goldberg received in Denver for his first WWE television appearance in over 12 years.

“The reaction to Goldberg confirmed our confidence that Bill is still not only relevant in the WWE world, his reaction was met with passionate exuberance even after a decade’s absence,” Vince said. “Bill’s son has never seen him perform and Bill’s wife and son were blown away with the reaction in Denver. Survivor Series is going to be on fire!”

Goldberg acknowledged that he will be battling Father Time at Survivor Series, not just The Beast. “I’d love to be the Goldberg of old and not the Goldberg that’s old,” he said. “I’m 12 years older, and gray, but in those 12 years I that I’ve been away from wrestling I’m much wiser, and I have 12 years of MMA training that I can utilize. My stand up game is immensely better than it ever was in WCW or WWE.”

Vince Still Running RAW & SmackDown, “Laughed Like A Maniac” At Recent Catch Phrase

Despite obvious creative differences between RAW and SmackDown, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is still in charge of both shows. Some people have been under the impression that Ryan Ward and Triple H are running SmackDown while Vince runs RAW but that is not the case as Vince remains hands-on and in complete control of both shows.

In other creative news, Vince was said to be a big fan of the “sparkle-crotch” phrase used in mid-October. Vince was reportedly laughing like a maniac every time Seth Rollins used the phrase and had him use it over & over but did not order it to be scripted after the first week.

ESPN Films Announces XFL “30 For 30” Special

ESPN Films has announced a new “30 for 30” documentary special focusing on the ill-fated XFL football league. The XFL ran for just 1 season back in 2001 and was fronted by Vince McMahon and legendary television executive Dick Ebersol of NBC.

“This Was The XFL” has its world premiere tomorrow (Friday) at the DOC NYC film festival in Manhattan and premieres on ESPN on February 2nd. From the official announcement:

ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 “This Was the XFL” to Premiere in February

Documentary, directed by Charlie Ebersol and featuring Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon, to debut on February 2 at 9 p.m. ET; World Premiere to Take Place at DOC NYC Tomorrow

Three days before Super Bowl LI, ESPN Films will premiere the 30 for 30 documentary “This Was the XFL,” directed by Charlie Ebersol, chronicling the short-lived, ill-fated pro football league. The documentary, airing on February 2 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN, tells the story in fascinating, candid, and often rollicking fashion featuring fellow television legends and close friends – Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon.

A bold challenge, a fearless experiment and ultimately, a spectacular failure. In 2001, sports entertainment titans Ebersol and McMahon launched the XFL. It was hardly the first time a league had tried to compete with the NFL, but the brash audacity of the bid, combined with the personalities and charisma of Ebersol and McMahon and the marketing behemoths of their respective companies — NBC and WWE — captured headlines and a sense of undeniable anticipation about what was to come.

Bringing together a cast of characters ranging from the boardrooms of General Electric to the practice fields of Las Vegas, “This Was the XFL” is the tale of — yes — all that went wrong, but also, how the XFL ended up influencing the way professional team sports are broadcast today. And at the center of it all – a decades long friendship between one of the most significant television executives in media history and the one-of-a-kind WWE impresario. This film will explore how Ebersol and McMahon brought the XFL to life, and why they had to let it go.

“I grew up on the sidelines watching my father and Vince enjoy incredible success with just about everything they touched, and then, along came the XFL,” said director Charlie Ebersol. “I saw them take bold creative risks, face unparalleled success and failure with dignity, but most importantly they maintained and celebrated a friendship where most would have cut and run. I learned more about integrity and character in those 18 months than just about any other time in my life, so when ESPN Films asked if I wanted to tell the story of the XFL, I jumped at the opportunity because I knew that the real story was that of an unbreakable friendship.”

John Dahl, Vice President and Executive Producer, ESPN Films said: “We felt that the colorful personalities and storylines featured throughout the rise and fall of the XFL deserved a more detailed examination, and as Dick Ebersol’s son, Charlie provided a personal understanding of it all. The XFL was a gamble, and even though the league didn’t ultimately succeed, we think audiences will really enjoy this tale of risk and ambition.”

“This Was the XFL” will have its world premiere tomorrow at the DOC NYC film festival in Manhattan.

Vince McMahon Comments On Potentially Selling WWE

Photo: Orlando Sentinel

Vince McMahon said WWE is “open for business” in regards to a potential sale of the company today during the third quarter earnings call.

An investor mentioned the recent UFC sale and the Time Warner/AT&T merger, then asked Vince is they would be open to selling WWE. Vince said the company is open to anything because they are business people but controlling their own destiny is very important.

Vince said he’s unsure of how much control they would lose if they were absorbed and the company is currently focused on creating their own content but he is open to listening to offers, especially an offer the company couldn’t refuse.

The same investor then asked if WWE would be interested in selling if they received an offer that would let them control that destiny. Vince reiterated: “We’re open for business.”

WWE Q3 2016 Financial Results Announced, Vince McMahon Reacts

WWE announced the following:

WWE® Reports Q3 2016 Results & Targets Record 2017 Adjusted OIBDA of $100 Million

STAMFORD, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

WWE today announced financial results for its third quarter 2016. The Company reported Net income of $11.1 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, as compared to Net income of $10.4 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, in the prior year quarter.

“During the quarter, we continued to effectively execute our content strategy, which has resulted in record revenues to-date in 2016 and increased consumption across our media platforms,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “This growth illustrates meaningful progress against our long-term strategic plan and provides the foundation for achieving our 2017 financial objectives.”

George Barrios, WWE Chief Strategy & Financial Officer, stated “We achieved a 24% increase in average paid subscribers to WWE Network and generated profits that were within the range of our guidance. We expect continued year-over-year growth in subscribers and profits for the fourth quarter resulting in strong full year performance that is in-line with our previous business outlook.”

Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2016 Business Outlook

The Company projects fourth quarter Adjusted OIBDA of approximately $20 million to $24 million (Operating income of $12 million to $16 million) and average paid subscribers to WWE Network of 1.40 million (+/- 2%). The fourth quarter subscriber forecast represents an approximate 4% sequential decline from the third quarter 2016 and a 13% increase from the fourth quarter 2015. The Company also projects 2016 Adjusted OIBDA of $80 million to $84 million (Operating income of $54 million to $58 million) and average paid subscribers to WWE Network of approximately 1.42 million representing growth of 25% for the full year.3

2017 Outlook

In 2017, WWE management expects the Company to achieve another year of record revenue and has targeted Adjusted OIBDA of $100 million, which would also be an all-time record (up approximately 20% from projected 2016 Adjusted OIBDA of $80 million to $84 million), and Operating income of $70 million. Supporting the continued growth in the Company’s revenue and profits, management anticipates contractual increases in television rights fees from key distribution agreements and expects the level of WWE Network subscribers will continue to increase, albeit at a lower rate, on a year-over-year basis. As management believes there is a significant long term growth opportunity for WWE, the company plans to continue to invest in key areas to optimize WWE’s long-term performance while driving strong bottom line performance.

Providing perspective on the growth of WWE Network and the company’s targeted profit expansion, Mr. Barrios commented, “Given the current scale and leverage of WWE Network, increases in its subscribers have the potential to drive meaningful growth in revenue and profit; therefore, we define success by the achievement of sustained year-over-year increases in this measure. Based on anticipated subscriber growth, we believe we can achieve our targeted record financial results in 2017. Moreover, the continued growth of WWE Network would enable us to deliver a wider range of content, strengthening our engagement with a broadening audience of ardent fans. In addition to supporting our 2017 financial objective, growth of WWE Network would provide us with greater flexibility as the media landscape continues to evolve.”2

Comparability of Results

Third quarter 2015 revenue included approximately $14 million associated with the licensed reality series Total Divas and Tough Enough, which aired 21 episodes in the prior year period. These episodes did not have a material impact on OIBDA in the prior year quarter. There were no comparable airings in the third quarter 2016.

Three Months Ended September 30, 2016 – Results Overview

Revenues for the quarter were $164.2 million, essentially flat to the prior year. North American revenues decreased 6% from the prior year quarter predominantly due to the prior-year impact of certain licensed television programs (described above), a lower effective royalty rate for our franchise video game, WWE 2K16, and lower sales of our toy products. These factors were partially offset by the growth of WWE Network subscribers and increased television rights fees in key distribution agreements. Revenues from outside North America increased 13% driven by the increased monetization of content, as reflected in the Media Division and by higher Live Event revenue, particularly in the EMEA and APAC regions. Revenue in the current period was reduced by approximately $1.0 million due to unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates.

Three Months Ended September 30, 2016 – Segment Performance Commentary

The year-over-year changes in the Company’s financial performance were driven by its Network, Television, Licensing, WWE Studios and Corporate & Other business segments. A further discussion of key business segments is provided in the narrative below. Refer to our third quarter 2016 Form 10-Q for management’s discussion and analysis of financial condition and results of operations pertaining to all of our segments.

Media Division

Revenues from the Company’s Media division decreased 4%, to $110.4 million, primarily due to the impact of certain television programming, which more than offset the increased revenue from the growth of WWE Network subscribers and the contractual escalation of television rights fees.

* Network revenues, which include revenue generated by WWE Network and pay-per-view, increased 10% to $45.1 million. WWE Network subscription revenue increased 18% to $42.8 million from $36.4 million in the prior year quarter based on a 24% year-over-year increase in average paid subscribers to 1.46 million.

* Network segment OIBDA of $17.4 million was essentially unchanged from the prior year quarter as the growth in WWE Network subscription revenue was offset by increased programming expenses, including a $3.2 million allocation of certain expenses shared between the Company’s Network and Television segments.4 A portion of the increase in Network programming expenses relates to the Company’s previously communicated strategic investments.

* The Company continued to increase the global subscriber base of WWE Network, as measured on a year-over-year basis, with launches over the trailing 12 months in five countries including Germany and Japan. WWE Network had 1.44 million total paid subscribers at the end of the third quarter, which represented a 17% increase from September 30, 2015. WWE Network had 1.07 million U.S. paid subscribers and 373,000 international paid subscribers at quarter-end.

* WWE Network content, including pay-per-views, original series, NXT Takeover, and specials have continued to drive viewer engagement. During the quarter, the Company introduced compelling new content for WWE Network, including NXT Takeover Brooklyn III, Holy Foley!, WWE Draft Center Live, and Cruiserweight Classic, a ten-week global tournament. The Company is on pace to add more than 300 hours of original content to the network’s featured programming in 2016, and more than 2,500 hours of archival content to WWE Network, which would result in an on-demand library of over 7,000 hours at year-end 2016.

* Television revenues decreased 14% to $56.3 million from $65.2 million in the prior year as contractual increases in key distribution agreements were more than offset by the prior year impact of WWE’s licensed reality series, Total Divas and Tough Enough. There were no scheduled airings of these programs in the third quarter 2016, while the prior year quarter reflected approximately $14 million in revenue from the fourth season of Total Divas (13 episodes) and Tough Enough (8 episodes). As indicated above, the allocation of certain shared expenses reduced Network segment OIBDA and increased Television segment OIBDA by $3.2 million in the third quarter 2016.

Live Events

Live Event revenues increased 10% to $28.6 million primarily due to the staging of 5 additional international events.

* There were 82 total events (excluding NXT) in the current quarter, including 71 events in North America and 11 events in international markets, as compared to 85 events in the prior year quarter, including 79 events in North America and 6 in international markets.
* North American live event revenues of $21.0 million were essentially unchanged from the prior year quarter as increases in average attendance and ticket prices were offset by the impact of eight fewer events. Average attendance increased 4% to 5,300, and the average effective ticket price increased 3% to $50.51.
* International live event revenue increased 56% to $7.0 million from $4.5 million in the prior year quarter primarily due to the impact of five additional events. Average attendance declined 8% to 8,200 and average effective ticket prices declined 15% to $72.13, attributable, in part, to changes in the mix of territories.

Consumer Products

Revenues from Consumer Products decreased 4% to $21.6 million as higher online sales of merchandise at the Company’s e-commerce sites were more than offset by a reduction in licensing revenue. Licensing revenues decreased 22% to $9.0 million primarily due to a lower effective royalty rate for our franchise video game, WWE 2K16, and lower sales of our toy products. (As a reminder, the lower effective royalty rate derived from an increasing rate structure over the 2015 year as compared to a flat rate structure in 2016. For the full year, the Company expects the rate for 2016 will be comparable to the average rate for 2015.)

WWE Studios

Revenues from filmed entertainment increased to $2.5 million as compared to $1.7 million in the prior year quarter. The increase in revenue was due to the performance and timing of results from the Company’s portfolio of movies. During the quarter, WWE Studios released two feature films, Scooby Doo! & WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon and Interrogation. WWE Studios OIBDA increased $1.8 million due, in part, to the increase in revenues, and agreed changes to the terms of distribution of a previously released film, which resulted in lower expenses.

Corporate and Other

Corporate and Other expenses increased to $44.8 million in the current year quarter from $41.9 million in the prior year quarter. As defined, these expenses include corporate G&A expenses as well as Business Support costs, such as sales, marketing, and talent development costs, which are not allocated to specific segments. The $2.9 million rise in Corporate & other expense reflected investments in data analytics, global branding, and certain talent initiatives.

Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (OIBDA)

OIBDA was $24.5 million as compared to $23.4 million in the prior year quarter. The increase in OIBDA reflected the increased monetization of the Company’s video content. Television and Network profits, on a combined basis, increased $5.5 million due to the contractual escalation of key distribution agreements and growth in WWE Network subscriptions, which were partially offset by higher production costs.4 These growth factors were offset, in part, by a $2.5 million reduction in Licensing profits from a lower effective video game royalty rate and lower sales of toy products, as well as an increase in Corporate and Other expenses as described above. The Company’s overall OIBDA margin was 15% in the current year quarter as compared to 14% in the prior year quarter.

Nine Months Ended September 30, 2016 – Results Overview

Total revenues for the nine months ended September 30, 2016 were $534.3 million as compared to $492.6 million in the prior year period. Operating income for the current year period was $41.8 million versus $40.3 million in the prior year period. Net income was $25.8 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, as compared to Net income of $25.3 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, in the prior year period. OIBDA was $59.6 million for the current nine month period as compared to OIBDA of $57.6 million in the prior year period.

Nine Months Ended September 30, 2016 – Segment Performance Commentary

Revenues increased 8% to $534.3 million from $492.6 million with growth from across the Company’s business segments. North American revenues increased 7% driven primarily by the growth of WWE Network, higher Live Events and Digital Media revenue, as well as higher online sales of branded merchandise as reflected in WWE Shop. Partially offsetting this growth was a decline in television revenue as the escalation of rights fees in key distribution agreements was more than offset by the impact of airing fewer episodes of the Company’s licensed reality series. Revenues from outside North America increased 14% driven by the growth of WWE Network, increased television rights fees as well as higher live event and e-commerce merchandise sales, particularly in the EMEA region. Revenue in the current period was reduced by approximately $2.7 million due to unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates.

Media Division

Revenues from the Company’s Media division increased 6% to $337.6 million from $318.8 million primarily due to the growth in WWE Network subscription revenue, contractual increases in key television distribution agreements and higher digital media revenue. These growth drivers were partially offset by the impact of fewer episodes of the licensed reality series, Tough Enough and Total Divas, and revenue declines from the Company’s Home Entertainment segment.

Live Events

Live Event revenues increased 15% to $105.8 million from $91.8 million in the prior year period primarily due to a 12% increase in average ticket prices at the Company’s events in North America, including WrestleMania, an increase in international ticket sales, and an expanded touring schedule for the Company’s NXT brand. Average attendance at the Company’s international events increased 18% to 8,000 and the company held six additional events in international markets.

Consumer Products Division

Revenues from Consumer Products increased 8% to $80.1 million from $74.4 million in the prior year period, with growth driven by higher sales of branded merchandise through the Company’s e-commerce website, WWEShop, and on distribution channels including Amazon.

WWE Studios

WWE Studios recognized revenue of $7.7 million as compared to revenue of $5.3 million in the prior year period. The increase in revenue was due to the performance and timing of results from the Company’s portfolio of movies.

Corporate and Other

Corporate and Other expenses were $136.3 million as compared to $122.4 million in the prior year period. As defined, these expenses include corporate G&A expenses as well as Business Support costs such as sales, marketing, international management and talent development costs, which are not allocated to specific segments. The rise in Corporate & Other expense reflects investments to support key strategic initiatives and certain talent related costs.

Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (OIBDA)

OIBDA increased to $59.6 million from $57.6 million in the prior year period primarily due to the increased monetization of the Company’s video content and higher profits from its Live Event business. Television and Network profits, on a combined basis, increased $8.3 million with the contractual escalation of key distribution agreements and growth in WWE Network subscriptions, which were partially offset by higher production costs.7 Live Event profits increased $4.9 million primarily due to higher ticket sales and effective pricing for the Company’s premier event, WrestleMania, as well as increased international events and attendance. Partially offsetting these growth drivers was a $13.9 million increase in Corporate and Other expenses (as described above). The Company’s OIBDA margin was 11% in the current year period as compared to 12% in the prior year period.

Cash Flows & Liquidity

Cash generated from operating activities was $19.7 million in the current nine-month period, compared to $31.9 million in the prior year period. The $12.2 million decrease in cash generated by operating activities was primarily due to the increased payout of management incentive compensation.

Capital expenditures increased $8.0 million from the prior year period in continued support of the Company’s content production activities. Capital expenditures in the current year period include $4.8 million paid as part of the consideration towards the purchase of a building and underlying real property located in Stamford, Connecticut.

As of September 30, 2016, the Company held $68 million in cash and short-term investments and estimates debt capacity under its revolving line of credit of approximately $150 million.

Notes

(1) The definition of OIBDA, Adjusted OIBDA and a reconciliation of Q3 2016 Operating Income to Adjusted OIBDA can be found in the Supplemental Information in this release.

(2) The Company’s business model and expected results will continue to be subject to significant execution risks, including those risks outlined in the Company’s Form 10-K filing with the SEC.

(3) Reconciliation of Q4 2016 and full year 2016 and 2017 Operating Income to Adjusted OIBDA can be found in the Supplemental Information in this release.

(4) Beginning in January 2016, the Company started allocating certain shared expenses between its Network and Television segments. Management believes this allocation more accurately reflects the operations of these segments. For the third quarter 2016, the implementation of this allocation methodology reduced Network segment OIBDA by $3.2 million and increased Television segment OIBDA by a corresponding $3.2 million. The allocation methodology had no impact on the Company’s consolidated financial statements.

(5) Metrics reflect subscribers who are direct customers of WWE Network and subscribers reported under licensed partner agreements, which have different economic terms for the network.

(6) Average paid subscribers are calculated based on the arithmetic daily mean over the relevant period, and may differ substantially from paid subscribers at the end of any period due to the timing of paid subscriber additions and losses.

(7) For the nine month period ended September 30, 2016, the allocation of shared production expenses (as described in note 3 above) reduced Network segment OIBDA by $11.6 million and increased Television segment OIBDA by a corresponding $11.6 million. The allocation methodology had no impact on the Company’s consolidated financial statements.

Vince McMahon Tweets That Women’s Title Match Is Hell In a Cell Main Event…Sort Of

Vince McMahon tweeted this late Sunday morning:

That wording is likely to fuel plenty of speculation. With all of the conversation about whether or not the first women’s Hell in a Cell match will close the eponymous pay-per-view event, this tweet, giving it the same weight as the other Cell matches on the show, isn’t exactly clear. There’s clearly a lot of interest in the Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte, more so than the other Hell in a Cell matches. The argument is there that this is the bout most deserving of a headline slot since the women’s division was overhauled.

Even if you want to look at this pessimistically, with some fans seeing it as a lame duck show since promotion for the dual brand Survivor Series has already started, there isn’t much “harm” that Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte in the “real main event” slot could do. This will likely continue to be a hot topic among wrestling fans in the remaining seven days until the pay-per-view.

John Cena Optimistic Vince McMahon Would Bring Back CM Punk

As they say in the wrestling business, “Never say never.”

While it seems unlikely that CM Punk would be willing to wrestle for WWE again, the promotion’s top star John Cena believes Vince McMahon would be willing to bury the hatchet with Punk and do what’s best for business.  TMZ cameras caught up with Cena this week and asked him about whether we could see Punk back in WWE one day. Of course both sides would have to agree to work together again, but Cena is optimistic Vince would play ball.

“If I know one thing about my boss Vince McMahon, he always does what’s good for business, if it’s good for business it will work out,” Cena said. “The name in the question doesn’t matter about that, if it’s good for business it’ll work out.”

Here’s the interview – do you think we’ll ever see CM Punk back in WWE, or in any wrestling ring?

Vince’s Involvement In SmackDown, His “Weird Mindset,” WWE’s New Building

– Despite speculation that Vince McMahon favors the RAW brand, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported this week that Vince is still hands-on with SmackDown. Meltzer said it’s simply “not the case” that Vince only works on RAW.

– Meltzer also commented on the possibility of WWE acting as a distributor and airing other companies’ wrestling shows on their Network, similar to Netflix. He feels that it would make sense, but is unlikely due to Vince’s “weird mindset” about any other company “getting credit” for the Network’s success.

– As previously reported, WWE has purchased a TV production facility in Stamford, CT for $26.9 million. They made the purchase under “WWE Real Estate Holdings, LLC,” and received a loan for $23 million after paying $2 million to the seller and $1.9 million to the lender up front.

WWE uses about 20,000 square feet in the facility, and plans to double that. The main tenant is AmeriCares, which occupies 90,000 square feet of the property. WWE is honoring AmeriCares’ lease with the previous owner, which runs until 2033.

The Rock’s Ex-Wife & Business Partner On His WWE Relationship, Vince McMahon

Newsweek recently profiled Dany Garcia, the longtime business partner and ex-wife to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. She spoke of their work with Seven Bucks productions, bodybuilding and more.

Garcia, who the article noted was extremely comfortable in speaking to WWE officials about everything from Rock’s contracts to his future with the company while he was there, gave a lot of credit to Vince McMahon for helping her grow. She said:

“He has taught me some amazing lessons that we use [today] as far as taking care of the audience and being an audience-driven company. He’s helped raise the lion is how he looks at it.”

Newsweek noted that The Rock still returns to WWE TV when his schedule allows but there are no legal agreements between the two sides. Garcia elaborated on his special relationship with WWE and Vince:

“We have no legal agreements between us. With Vince McMahon we’ve always been able to shake hands. That’s a very special relationship in this day and age, that we can operate with that level of trust.”

Vince McMahon: Injury Update, More Missed Shows

As WWE announced earlier this week, Vince McMahon was scheduled to undergo surgery for an injury sustained while weight training. Aside from us knowing that Vince tore one of his quads doing squats, details are sketchy because Vince wanted to keep the story as quiet as possible.

Vince missed Backlash, RAW and Smackdown this week, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The 71-year-old WWE CEO was said to be squatting a significant amount of weight, something most people stop doing in their 30’s and 40’s due to strain on the body.

Vince still lifting such heavy weights and WWE putting out an announcement stating he’d be back in the office right after surgery is being seen as a sign that he’s “still Vince” and not really showing signs of slowing down.

Vince McMahon: Details On The Injury Requiring Surgery

WWE announced on Monday that company Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon is undergoing surgery to repair an injury sustained while training. WWE.com noted that Vince would be back in the office on Wednesday, but did not disclose the nature of the injury.

According to the Wrestling Observer, the word going around WWE is that McMahon tore his quadriceps while squatting. The injury is believed to have occurred over the past several days.

Longtime WWE fans know this isn’t the first time McMahon has suffered a quad tear. At the conclusion of the 2005 Royal Rumble match, Vince McMahon charged to the ring after John Cena and Batista botched the finish and both eliminated simultaneously. While entering the ring, he tore both of his quads and was forced to communicate the new finish to the referee while seated.

Vince McMahon Injured, Undergoing Surgery

WWE announced on Monday evening that company Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon sustained an injury while training. He will require surgery for the undisclosed injury.

WWE.com reports that Vince McMahon will be back in the office at WWE Headquarters on Wednesday.

The 71-year-old is still an avid bodybuilder and will probably be back in the gym faster than John Cena returns from a bicep tear.

Get well soon, Mr. McMahon!

Sean Waltman & Scott Hall Talk Curtain Call, Goldberg Returning, WWE’s “Soft Style”

Sean “X-Pac” Waltman has a new show on AfterBuzz TV called X-Pac 1,2,360. The first episode features an interview with his long time friend, WWE Hall of Famer Scott Hall. The guys talked about a number of topics, including Hulk Hogan, Cody Rhodes, Ryback and more. Here are some highlights:

The Miz and Daniel Bryan got a ton of attention last week for their heated exchange on Talking Smack. One of the more surprising moments of that segment came when Daniel Bryan spoke about the WWE style of wrestling being “soft” compared to Japan and other regions. X-Pac reacted, “Bryan mentioned something about the soft WWE style, before it changed. I never worked that style. I take exception to that part, because my body, my X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, will tell a different story than a supposed soft style that we were working.”

Bill Goldberg has been in the news in recent weeks, with TMZ reporting “the wheels are in motion” for a WWE return. X-Pac likes the idea of Goldberg back in WWE and thinks CM Punk will also return one day. “The only thing I can say is, why not? It’s win/win for both sides. Who cares about the past, you know? Nobody in wrestling should ever say the word never, because everybody ends up eating that particular word and Goldberg’s not going to be any different. Neither is CM Punk eventually.”

Finally, Scott Hall spoke about the infamous “Curtain Call” at Madison Square Garden back in 1996, with Scott Hall saying, “Vince knew it was going to happen. I was talking to Vince when Shawn came in and said, hey blah blah blah and he went, is it important to you, and he said yes. And he said, OK make it happen. He said, I want Razor to come out, and I’m sitting right there.”

Dana White Says Vince McMahon Is A “F**king Maniac,” Speaks On Their Relationship

UFC President Dana White was a guest on the latest edition of Ric Flair’s podcast, and spoke about his relationship with Vince McMahon. White talked about how much he respects McMahon’s work ethic, and revealed what his two best experiences with Vince were.

“I’ve been working, or trying to work with Vince for years. It was obviously very difficult, Vince is a maniac,” White said. “He’s a f**king competitor, man. That’s what he is. If you look at what Vince McMahon has accomplished in all of his years, and to still be on top, still doing it, the guy’s got enough money, he’s in it because he loves it. He’s in it because he’s passionate about it.”

He added that dealing with Vince in the past has been “very difficult,” but in the last several years it’s been “much better.” White said that him allowing Ronda Rousey to take part in WrestleMania and McMahon allowing Lesnar to take part in UFC 200 were his best experiences dealing with the WWE Chairman.

“[Vince] is a f**king maniac, he’s an animal,” White continued. “He’s a competitor, he wants to win, and you know, that’s his nature, and I respect it.”

White said he currently has no plans to work with more pro wrestlers, but that every time he meets a WWE star they get along well. You can listen to the entire podcast here.

Backstage Altercation Between Brock Lesnar & Chris Jericho At SummerSlam

Source: F4Wonline.com

Chris Jericho ended up in a backstage incident with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam last night as Jericho was concerned about Randy Orton’s condition.

According to Dave Meltzer, multiple sources report that the incident began when Jericho came to the gorilla position as Lesnar vs. Orton ended, to find out what exactly happened and to see if Orton was alright. Jericho asked Michael Hayes if that was the planned finish and when Hayes wouldn’t respond, Jericho said, “That’s bullshit.”

Lesnar came through the curtain, heard the “that’s bullshit” comment and thought Jericho was talking about the match. One version has Lesnar calling Jericho a “pussy” and the other has him saying “shut up” to Jericho, then telling Jericho to mind his own business. The two came face to face and had words, leading to Lesnar reportedly pushing Jericho with his fingers. Jericho then did a forehead press while another version has him shoving Lesnar against the wall. While the two were up against the wall, Lesnar reportedly told Jericho to kiss him or punch him. Triple H then jumped in and broke things up but the two ended up going at it again until Vince McMahon finally broke it up. Vince told Jericho that everything was a work and to be professional after Jericho continued yelling about Brock.

Triple H reportedly told Vince that Lesnar was to blame, and that Jericho was just standing up for himself. That was the end of the incident between the two. Jericho then saw Orton’s condition and got mad but Orton assured him that he knew what was coming.

Vince McMahon Missing Weeks Of TV Tapings, When He’s Expected Back

Vince McMahon has not been at any RAW and SmackDown tapings over the past two weeks, which is very out of character for the 70 year old WWE head honcho. According to the latest Wrestling Observe Newsletter, he’s not expected back until next weekend’s SummerSlam PPV (8/21). Vince missing multiple TV tapings is news, but it’s especially noteworthy that he’ll also be missing the final week of television before one of WWE’s biggest shows of the year.

The Observer notes that Vince has still been in communication with his key people and called in to participate during recent production meetings. Despite not being present at the shows, Vince has continued to micro-manage virtually every detail of RAW and SmackDown throughout the day before the shows shoot.

No word yet on why Vince has been absent, but we covered back in June that he also missed the 6/20 and 6/21 tapings.

WWE Q2 Conference Call Notes: Questionable Claim About SmackDown TV Rating, McMahon Praises NXT “Influx of Talent”

WWE CEO Vince McMahon and Chief Strategy and Financial Office George Barrios spoke and took questions about the Q2 (April 1 to June 30) earnings release that took place today.

McMahon and Barrios started the call off by reading highlights from the investor presentation and earnings press release.

McMahon mentioned that the first live SmackDown (on July 19) was the highest-rated edition of the program since its move to cable, which happened in October 2010. The rating for July 19 was 2.20. According to records of Live+SD ratings kept at Gerweck.net, there have been a number of episodes of SmackDown since October 2010, both live and taped, that were rated higher. We have submitted a question to WWE about this and hope to follow-up in another article later today.

As usual, the most interesting part of the call was the Q&A, where market analysts who cover WWE asked questions.

  • An analyst asked whether WWE expected any impact on business, possibly through television viewership, from the upcoming Summer Olympics, which begin August 5. Barrios said the company doesn’t expect any impact.
  • Brandon Ross from investment firm BTIG asked WWE to provide some color on WWE’s rationale for the brand extension. McMahon responded, praising the “influx of talent” thanks to Paul Levesque’s work with NXT and the Performance Center. Because they have so much talent, it allows them to have more pay-per-view events, more live events and more licensing opportunities, McMahon said.
  • Eric Katz from Wells Fargo asked if WWE has seen any signs that storylines from the brand extension are driving WWE Network subscriptions. Barrios took the question, saying SmackDown just went live last week. He noted they’re three days into the brand extension itself. They have no trends in place yet, he said, but the company expects the brand extension to help drive engagement across all media platforms.
  • Laura Martin from Needham & Company asked whether the new deal in China with partner PPTV is exclusive. Barrios confirmed that it is. This is the first time RAW and SmackDown are being provided live in that market.
  • FBN Securities analyst Robert Routh asked how WWE views the sale of UFC, which recently sold for $4 billion. He inquired whether WWE itself would ever consider a similar transaction. Barrios emphasized that UFC is a private company, so all that’s known about its business is what’s reported in the media. Trying to portray the sale in a positive light for WWE, he said the sale of UFC shows how much value branded live content has today, which is obviously something WWE has a lot of. As to whether WWE would consider a sale of the company, Barrios said, “We’re always willing to listen… We care about doing what’s best for our audience, our shareholders and our employees.”

Backstage News On Who Booked Balor & Ziggler’s Big Wins This Week

Sasha Banks, Finn Balor, Apollo Crews and Dolph Ziggler all landed big wins on WWE television this week. Balor and Ziggler’s wins in particular lead to theories being floated online that someone other than Vince McMahon may have been behind the booking decisions. One name that came up in speculation was Triple H, who is in charge of the NXT brand. Banks, Balor and Crews all spent several years working in NXT.

Dave Meltzer shed some light on the situation on Wednesday, reporting that none other than WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was behind deciding the winners of the #1 contendership matches on RAW and SmackDown this week. Meltzer confirmed that Vince is still ultimately in control of what we see on WWE TV each week.

Balor defeated Roman Reigns cleanly on RAW to earn a spot in a match against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the new RAW-branded Universal Title, while Dolph Ziggler won a six-man match on SmackDown to get a shot at Dean Ambrose’s World Heavyweight Title. This week’s RAW also saw Sasha Banks defeat Charlotte to obtain the Women’s Title.

Donald Trump Reveals What Vince McMahon Thought Of RNC Entrance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UwTd9Cjx14

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump revealed on this weekend’s NBC Meet The Press that Vince McMahon enjoyed his entrance at the Republican National Convention this past week, which was compared to The Undertaker’s entrances. Below is a transcript from the show with the WWE Hall of Famer commenting on his recent conversation with Vince:

CHUCK TODD: Let me tell you, you bring up Thursday night, I’ve got to ask you about your entrance. Before we get to Thursday, that Monday night entrance was something else. I know you’ve gotten a lot of feedback on it.

DONALD TRUMP: I think I’m a little bit lucky, and a couple of people had that idea and I went along with the idea. And everything just worked right. And it was so good that they wanted to do it on Thursday night. I said, “Never in a million years, because you’ll never get it that way again.”

CHUCK TODD: I don’t think I’ve seen that even on WWE.

DONALD TRUMP: Yeah, I know. Well, Vincent’s a good friend of mine. He called me, he said, “That was a very, very good entrance.” But I didn’t want to do it a second time, because, you know, it never works out the second time.
