Last week I threw out the names of five deserving candidates who never had the opportunity to hold the WWE’s top title. I suggested names such as Hennig, Piper, and DiBiase, while readers suggested other wrestlers who were stiffed by the company, including Roberts, Steamboat, and Rude.
It is now time to look at the other side of the coin and discuss five wrestlers who never should have been anywhere close to the WWE Championship, yet somehow managed to snatch it away from more talented competitors.
![Sycho Sid]()
Sycho Sid
5. Sycho Sid
Sid isn’t the worst competitor on the list, but there were much more deserving wrestlers who never had the same opportunities. I have always been a Sid fan for one reason. No, not his in-ring work, nor his ability to captivate an audience, but instead for his unintentionally hilarious promos.
There has never been a wrestler who was worse on the mic than Sid. He compiled a vast collection of hilarious promos throughout his career that are more memorable than his actual matches.
![John Bradshaw Layfield]()
JBL
4. JBL
I know there are many JBL supporters out there, but I am certainly not one of them. I was never really impressed with his in-ring ability, his promo skills, or his character. The fact that he held onto the belt for a relatively long period of time is surprising to me, even if he was on SmackDown at the time and the title did not mean as much as it does now.
His recent commentary stint reinforces the fact that he just isn’t very entertaining, and he also seems like he would be a pretty negative person off-camera as well.
![Rey Mysterio]()
Rey Mysterio
3. Rey Mysterio
Mysterio has held both the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship during his career. At roughly 175 pounds, Mysterio is the lightest competitor to ever hold the crown and many have argued that it is unrealistic to have Mysterio defeat someone as large as the Big Show. I won’t make that argument, but do feel like he should not have held the WWE Championship, mainly because it was a pointless, half-hearted title reign.
He won the title against the Miz on RAW, only to have John Cena steal the glory moments later and win the championship on the same night.

Despite the rumor that AMC Networks was interested in purchasing controlling interest in WWE, investors don’t believe that Vince McMahon would be willing to sell controlling interest in his company. However, there is apparently some concern over what would take place if something were to happen to McMahon.
The general feeling is that Stephanie McMahon has taken a step back lately, and that Paul Levesque (Triple H) is not someone who could legitimately take over the role as CEO of a public company. Basically, while HHH has great knowledge of the wrestling business itself, his actual years of experience in management, as well as the non-wrestling obligations that a CEO has to deal with, is not something he has expertise in.
This would pretty much leave current WWE executives Michelle Wilson and/or George Barrios in the lead. The question on Barrios is his knowledge of the modern media landscape, as well as the wrestling side of things. In the case of Wilson, her knowledge of the wrestling aspect is also a question.

The following are highlights from the latest Q&A update from WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:
On why WWE didn’t immediately sign Sting when they bought WCW: “I’ve answered this numerous times. You can search for this info here. Sting was owed big money by Time Warner plus he was uncomfortable at the time with the TV14 programming.”
On the three-man commentary team of JR, Jerry Lawler and Vince McMahon: “It was the best three man team that I ever worked with and loved interacting with Vince and heel Lawler.”
On Ultimate Warrior vs. Ryback rumors for WrestleMania XXX: “I don’t expect to see Warrior wrestle at WM30 but I don’t know. I will not be at the HOF but will watch it on the WWE Network.”
On what CM Punk could do to headline WrestleMania in the future: “I’d suggest settling his differences w/ WWE mgmt would help him reach his goals. I’m WAY out of the loop on that matter.”

Rumors persist that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon will be returning to WWE television in the next few months.
In what could be another subtle hint Stephanie McMahon neglected to mention her father on Monday’s RAW during her heated Daniel Bryan and the “occupy RAW” segment.
She talked about her great grandfather and grandfather building the company she now runs, but Vince was conspicuously omitted.

Apparently the reason WWE took a shot at Jim Ross during commentary on the March 3rd edition of RAW was because of JR going public with the Vince McMahon “sharting” story during his Opie & Anthony radio appearance.
During the RAW broadcast, JBL was talking about his love for Vince McMahon as an announcer, which led to Jerry Lawler asking him to compare McMahon’s announcing to JR’s. JBL noted that he preferred McMahon, because he could speak English, and then noted that comparing the two is like comparing horse manure to ice cream (an old Bobby Heenan line).

According to one source, Vince McMahon is scheduled to return to WWE television as an active on-air character following WrestleMania XXX in April.
While the plan all along was for McMahon to return leading into WrestleMania XXX, this news should be taken for what it is, considering the fact that despite actually being advertised to return multiple times, WWE kept deciding against bringing McMahon back as a regular television performer.
It should be noted, however, that Stephanie McMahon is once again being referred to on-air as a “Principal Owner of WWE” again, which was the original terminology that was going to lead to Vince McMahon’s return.

Phil Johnson sent along the following:
WWE Hall of Famer “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase Sr. recently took some time to participate in an exclusive in-depth interview with PWMania.com. DiBiase, now retired from active wrestling, serves the public as a minister for Heart of David Ministry and had a lot to say about his new profession, wrestling, his family and more including Vince McMahon, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, WCW and the attitude era. Here are some highlights from the interview:
Vince McMahon & The Million Dollar Man Character: “It all has to do with marketing. The greatest marketing is word of mouth. Nobody can disagree that Vince is extremely good at marketing. He has marketed WWE so well and even the name Wrestlemania is synonymous with events like the Super Bowl. Now, this past Super Bowl was terrible. But, it’s a brand, just like WWE is a brand. People will still watch that brand. Wrestlemania will sell out because of its strength as a brand.”
Grooming Steve Austin: “I was really happy for him. I told him when I managed him the reason Vince put me with guys is because he hoped I would groom them. I told Steve at the time to keep doing what he was doing because what it is believable. You may not get over as fast, but you will last longer than guys who get over real fast and then their popularity dies out. Once you get over, you can do whatever you want. I don’t think anybody expected his character would grow to be as big as it did.”
The Attitude Era & Steve Austin: “But, as far as still managing him if I was still there, I wouldn’t be with him. As a Christian, I had an issue with the Attitude Era. If Stone Cold’s character was the heel, I’d be okay with it. But because he was drinking beer, flipping the bird and cursing…and getting cheered for it? And he becomes a babyface? That sends a message to teenagers that it’s ok to do all those things. That didn’t sit well with me.. The same thing was true with the NWO because we were the bad guys. But the bad guys were becoming the cool thing to be. There are good guys and bad guys in wrestling and I feel the story that should be told is that the good guys in the end win. If we send that message to kids, we are sending the right message. The Million Dollar Man character always got his butt kicked in the end.”
The Undertaker’s WrestleMania Appearances: “Regarding his once-a-year Wrestlemania appearances, I can only think “Mark, how many times can you do this?” Every year I think he would be getting closer to the end. But the fact that he only makes this one-time appearance is great because fans of the Undertaker will be there and will look forward to seeing him. One of the reasons Elvis Presley was famous is because the only time you ever saw him was when he walked on stage. He would walk on stage, would perform and literally left the building. It adds to the mystique. The less you see something you like, the more you want to see it.”
“The Million Dollar Man” also spoke more on Steve Austin and Vince McMahon, his future plans, WCW, WWF/E, Ted DiBiase Jr., being a minister among several other topics. You can read the in-depth interview in its entirety at PWMania.com.

VOC Nation sent along the following highlights of a recent interview with Kamala:
On becoming a wrestler: “I didn’t really want to be a wrestler. I liked watching wrestling and I couldn’t really find a (real) job.I was with Bobo Brazil and he started training me. I thought itwould be a quick way to make some money, get wealthy, and get rightback out of it. I never wanted to be a wrestler. If I had to do itall over again I wouldn’t be a wrestler.”
On his start and his gimmick: “My first match was with The GreatMaphesto; he broke me in and gave me my start. Jerry Lawler came upwith the Kamala idea. I used to live in Africa and I startedpainting myself back then.”
On working with Andre the Giant: “Andre wasn’t the friendly guy that he appeared to be. He was real temperamental and had a nasty attitude. When I first started working with him, he called me a (derogatory) name in the ring and I beat him up. After that, I never had another problem with him. A lot of (top guys had problems with Andre too). He would just go out and mop the floor with people. He treated (wrestlers) nasty, and the fans too. Andre would do it just about every night. Guys would watch through the curtain to see what he was going to do.”
On working with Hulk Hogan: “We had a lot of good matches and drew a lot of fans all over. Working with Hogan was easy and a treat. I loved working with him.”
On racism in the WWE: “In Summerslam 92, I had one of my biggest matches against the Undertaker. He made a half million dollars and I made 13 (thousand). There was a lot of racism in the WWE. I remember so many times when I was there, I would get there early and find me a nice dressing room; the agents would (kick me out and) let (the white stars) have the dressing room. When I went out to the ring, I was a superstar; backstage I was a nothing.”
On the Undertaker: “I love the Undertaker. If I see him on TV, I’ll stop and watch. I love his gimmick, and I like him. He’s a respectable man and I got along real good with him, and I love his work.”
On retirement and regrets: “I don’t miss it. I wish I had made money where I could have retired and enjoyed life. I worked so hard all those years and didn’t make any money. If I had made money, I would have done the right thing and invested it. I don’t watch wrestling today. If my friends are watching it, I’ll get up and leave. It brings back bad memories.”
On Vince McMahon: “Vince McMahon has certain people that he will pay. If you get along with Vince, do him sexual favors, you’ll get along good with him. But if you just (do your job and) mind your own business, then he doesn’t like you for some reason. There was a lot of men with men in those days and even men with boys. I know a lot of guys that (failed drug tests) and it was documented that they passed, and I know what they did.”

WWE has reportedly changed their initial plans for The Authority story line. Originally, there was talk of bringing Vince McMahon back to television as a regular character, with the idea of having him battle with Triple H for control of the company leading into WrestleMania XXX. Those plans have apparently been scratched.
Additionally, for whatever reason, WWE decided to change the on-air role for Stephanie McMahon, as they stopped referring to her as one of the owners of the company.

Hulk Hogan told WWE.com:

Here are some highlights from Thursday’s WWE investor conference call:
– Vince McMahon was asked about CM Punk’s status with the company. He replied,
“CM Punk is taking a sabbatical. Let’s just put it that way.”
– Overall, Vince said that their results were right around expectation (down due to “investment in the future”).
– TV Viewership was up 17% to 14.2 million viewers a week. Total Divas has helped drive up TV revenue. Live events increased 2 percent in 2014.
– Due to expenses related to the WWE Network and a loss of revenue from PPV cannibalization, 2014 could see lower earnings than 2013. They expect a net loss of $12-15 million dollars in the first quarter of this year. They will have a better idea of this year’s outlook at the first quarter conference call in May.
– WWE has new TV deals in the UK and Thailand and the deals are 3-7 times more than they were in the past. The UK and Thailand deals are now their number one and three deals outside of the US.
– WWE has the second-highest selling line of action figure brands in the country.
– When asked why WWE is still in the movie business, Vince said that their third business model for movies is finally making them money. They are a content company and they are still optimistic about the earnings potential of WWE Studios. The WWE Studios division did much better in Q4 2013 and they plan to “stay the course” with the studio this year. They mentioned the upcoming Scooby-Doo and Flintstones animated movies.

WWE released their full year 2013 financial results on Thursday morning, reporting $508 million in total revenue (up from $484 million in 2013). Despite taking in more than half a billion dollars, the company was barely profitable, with Operating Income of only $5.9 million (down from. $43.2 million in 2012). Net Income was $2.8 million (down from $43.2 million in 2012).
The revenue increase was primarily driven by increases in domestic business and in the Live Event/TV division. Domestic business accounted for 77.1% of total revenue in 2013, up from 75.6% in 2012 and 72.4% in 2011. WWE attributed the decline in international business to “lower sales of consumer products” that “more than offset contractual increases in international television agreements.”
WWE explained that their heavy spending was “building for the future” – on infrastructure for the WWE Network and other long-term projects.
In a press release issued by WWE, WWE CEO Vince McMahon stated:
“During the past year, we laid the foundation for future growth and enhanced our brand strength. We have now announced the renewal of our television distribution agreement in the U.K., are continuing the negotiations regarding our domestic content, and are poised to launch our global WWE Network in the next few days. With preparations for WrestleMania 30 fully underway, we look forward to celebrating our enduring legacy and ushering in a new era as we blaze new trails in the media industry.”
WWE financial executive George Barrios added onto the TV negotiations item after discussing WWE’s long-term planning.
“As we prepared to transform our business, we invested in content production and talent. Although our earnings declined in 2013, our performance was in-line with our guidance, which targeted a range of OIBDA results, excluding film impairments, of $40 million to $50 million.”
“Regarding our domestic TV licensing agreements, we are now engaged with potential partners after exiting our exclusive negotiating period with NBCU. Based on our analysis of the value of comparable programs and our extensive research regarding consumer interest in WWE Network, we continue to believe that we can double or triple our 2012 OIBDA results of $63 million by 2015.”

The following are highlights of a recent interview with former WWE Superstar Stevie Richards:
On his working relationship with Vince McMahon: “It’s tough to say, because it’s one of those things where he would call you in to give you the usual critique and say “You should have done this or you should have done that.” But the fact is, he’s so busy, that if he does take the time to pull you aside and talk to you, it’s usually not a very good thing. So I didn’t get that too many times, but I did everything to the best of my ability. Vince did pull me aside for good things. But most of the time, for bosses in general, if you do a good job, it’s not going to get the boss’ attention as much as if you really screwed up a plan that he or she has. The bottom line is this: I was contracted to do a job. When that contract ended, they didn’t owe me any money and I didn’t owe them any labor. That was it. Nobody stays in WWE forever. Everyone’s contract ends at some point. Sure they might come back, but nobody is there for 20-30 years. I think that’s a good thing because it keeps you sharp, it keeps you hungry and hopefully it will motivate you to save your money, because sooner or later, that money runs out.”
How he felt about his WWE run: “I’m one of those guys where as long as you tell me what you want in a match, I’m cool with that. When I was in WWF, the agents used to come up and tell me “We need Val Venis over in 8 minutes, do it however you want.” And to me, that’s very complimentary that they can trust me. That’s a very good stamp of approval to have from the office. They knew I was talented, but I think there was a point where someone said “This guy doesn’t draw enough money, let’s bring somebody else in who can bring something to the table.” But that doesn’t matter, because to me, the money looks the same. When I go to cash my check, the bank’s not going to tell me, “Oh you’re only making such and such dollars and you’re a jobber, we’re not going to cash your check.” One of things I wish I would have done was had the work ethic of Diamond Dallas Page, who’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever known. And I wish I was business savvy like Kevin Nash. Now, I know that may not sound popular, but I think Kevin has a good perspective on business and he’s a really decent guy to be around. Now, I feel like I’ve learned from both DDP and Nash; it may be late, but I still learned.”
If he’d return to WWE or TNA again: “That’s a tough question. It would have to be financially worth it to go back to either company. I have a bunch of other stuff going on like DDP Yoga and my T4 website. If I went back to WWE, I would have to give that up because there would be no time for it. And I’m not sure how long I would be there, because a contract in wrestling is not really a contract. You can get cut at any time for any reason, so I don’t know if I’d be willing to make that leap of faith again.”

Cesaro has finally won Vince McMahon over after his stellar match against John Cena last night on RAW.
According to a high-level source who was backstage at the show, Vince was “thrilled” with the match and has finally recognized Cesaro’s potential. Cesaro received a standing ovation backstage after his match against Cena.
Several of Vince’s trusted advisors told him they think Cesaro can be one of the biggest stars in the company.
Cesaro has been over fans and colleagues with his unique move set and his impressive feats of strength, but it was only a year ago when Vince told the writers and producers that he saw nothing in the Swiss Superstar.
Following RAW, Cesaro’s ‘stock’ with Vince hit an all time high.

The following are highlights of a recent VOC Nation interview with Scotty Riggs:
On his current status: “I’ve retired from wrestling due to injuries. The final straw was a fractured ulnar bone in my left arm. 13 screws and 2 steel plates to fix it, and after 2 surgeries it’s still not right.”
On the American Males theme music: “That was the creative genius of Jimmy Hart. He and Michael Hayes did a lot of the music over the years in WCW. (Jimmy) saw in me and Marcus, a mix of the Fabulous Ones, the Fantastics, and the Rock and Roll Express. His passion for those three tag teams came overflowing through that song. The first time we heard it, Jimmy was all excited, and (Marcus Bagwell) and I looked at each other and our jaws dropped. (I thought) ‘Oh my god it’s horrible but it still works.”
On whether or not he could have been a main event talent: “I don’t know; to be honest with you, there’s always a main event run in somebody. I just didn’t play the BS politics game. It really got heavy and deep. Everyone coming in had creative control in their contracts. I was the 47th hire in WCW and creative control didn’t exist back then. I had many influential friends, so I could have played that card, but that’s just not me.”
On Eric Bischoff: “Eric Bischoff never had the final say so in what was being done. Vince McMahon has the final say so. There were too many chiefs in WCW and not enough Indians. Eric was a great business man when it came from going from Saturday night shows to getting us on (primetime) TV. He was never groomed as a booker. He was never groomed to understand the inner workings of an angle or storyline. The booking committee was getting things done for him; he left things in the control of people like Kevin Sullivan and Arn (Anderson).”
On Vince Russo: ““Vince Russo came in and tried to turn WCW into another WWE. He didn’t care about wrestling; he cared more about his ‘crash TV’. He had skits and promos longer than the matches.”
On Bischoff versus Vince McMahon: “Eric saw everything in the short term. There was no long term agenda. Vince has a long term agenda. In terms of Wrestlemania, everything (all year) builds toward that one big event. Bischoff ran things week by week, and you can’t be successful without that vision.”
On the eye patch: “It was real. It was a chair to the eye. When the chair landed the wrong way up, the corner of the chair caught my eye. I had a bruised eye and it became part of the character.”

The following are highlights of a recent Newsday.com interview with former Spirit Squad member Mike Mondo:
On his first meeting with Vince McMahon: “‘He was like, ‘Haha! This is going to work. I like it.’ I understood that this was a character [The Spirit Squad] that was going to get heat. The wrestling was almost secondary.”
On his first WrestleMania and getting encouragement from Shawn Michaels: “I remember just looking around at the Squad members and thinking, ‘We made it to the dance. We made it to WrestleMania.’ He [Shawn Michaels] said to us while we were down there, ‘Welcome to WrestleMania boys.'”
On Dolph Ziggler’s success after The Spirit Squad gimmick ended: “The fact that he’s had a lot of success with the Intercontinental title, and winning the world title and the Money in the Bank, that’s really cool. So if was not going to be me, I’m glad the next guy in line was Dolph.”

According to F4WOnline.com, there are a number of people behind-the-scenes in WWE right now that are said to be “not unhappy” that CM Punk is gone. Apparently there has been a lot of negativity towards Punk from many people in the company.
As noted previously, Vince McMahon is personally handling the Punk situation. McMahon reportedly wants Punk to stay because he feels like there aren’t many top Superstars in the company right now.
Regarding WrestleMania XXX, the feeling is that Punk knew the company was aware that his contract expires in July, and that he wasn’t expected to re-sign, meaning he felt like he knew what direction his match against Triple H would head as a result.
