PROGRESS Make Chapter 36 Main Event Official

At this past Sunday’s Chapter 33 ‘Malice in Wonderland’ event Mark Haskins became the Number 1 contender to the PROGRESS Championship by defeating NJPW star Will Ospreay. Moments after the match Haskins laid out his intentions, he wanted a shot at the title at PROGRESS’ biggest ever event; Chapter 36 at the O2 Academy in Brixton, London.

The match has now been made official, Mark Haskins will be challenging for the PROGRESS Championship at Chapter 36 ‘We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Room Again.’ Who that will be against is yet to be confirmed, however Marty Scurll recaptured the title against Pastor William Eaver this past Sunday and a marquee matchup of Haskins vs Scurll is likely although plans may change between now and September 25th.

Will Ospreay Flips Out On Vader, Reacts To EVOLVE’s Contract Offer (Video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if2-fIL_nJI

Ryan Carse, editor of The Tag Rope, sent in word that they interviewed Will Ospreay at WhatCulture Pro Wrestling’s recent tapings from Newcastle, England. Topics discussed include the current British scene and Paul Heyman recently presenting him with a contract offer to wrestle for EVOLVE.

Everything was going smoothly until Vader was mentioned, which resulted in Ospreay flying off the handle with an expletive-laden tirade. The 23-year-old Areal Assassin steps in the ring with Vader next Friday (8/12) for Revolution Pro Wrestling. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His Feud With Vader

“I’ve got such a problem with the guy because he’s directed so much abuse at me, and the fact is now that he’s been called out about it, he’s saying, ‘Oh, Will Ospreay could be good, Will Ospreay could be this. And it’s like, ‘No mate, you got caught out because everyone’s battering you’” …

“Here’s what’s going to happen. I am going to f*ck Vader up big-time. It’s not even going to be a wrestling match; it’s going to be a fight. And I am going to embarrass him, I am going to outflip him, I am going to do everything that pisses him off and I’m going to show everybody why wrestling has evolved, and the evolution starts with me.”

EVOLVE’s Contract Offer

“It’s a very selfish thing I’m about to say, but I need to think about me. And not just the brand of Will Ospreay. I’ve had other offers come in and I’m just trying to swim in an ocean full of talent and trying to stay relevant and trying to keep doing what I do. It’s been an incredible journey and I want to keep it going, I want to help out, I want to do more things.”

The full interview will be released early next week. Visit TheTagRope.com for more information.

Video: Paul Heyman Invites Will Ospreay To Join EVOLVE

Paul Heyman is over in the UK this week for his first ever tour of one-man shows titled, An Evening with Paul Heyman. At Tuesday night’s kickoff event from York Hall in London, Heyman invited his special guest Will Ospreay on stage and heaped praise on the British wrestling sensation.

Heyman encouraged Ospreay to continue practicing his craft and building his worldwide reputation while working for New Japan Pro Wrestling. However, after speaking with his former protégé Gabe Sapolsky about Will’s unbelievable talent, Heyman made a jaw dropping offer that must have blown away the high flier – when he finishes up his commitments with NJPW, he’s got a contract waiting for him to wrestle for EVOLVE.

Aside from featuring some of the most state of the art wrestling anywhere, EVOLVE’s working relationship with WWE makes the offer even more enticing.

The An Evening With Paul Heyman tour continues tomorrow 7/13 from Manchester and finishes Friday night in Glasgow, Scotland. For more information, visit InsideTheRopes.co.uk.

Will Ospreay vs. Vader Booked For 8/12 At York Hall (RPW)

Revolution Pro Wrestling have announced that one of the most bizarre, unexpected and anticipated matches of 2016 will be taking place on August 12th at York Hall.

Ever since his polarising bout with Ricochet at this year’s Best of The Super Juniors tournament, Will Ospreay has taken criticism for his work from many corners of the internet, including some legends of the industry.

Vader’s outspoken view of the match led to a back and forth over Twitter that prompted Ospreay to add the ‘Vader Bomb’ to his arsenal, however in a fairly mocking way (allowing opponents to kick at 1 after taking the move).

Whether this was Vader’s plan all along is speculation at this point, however he has managed to be booked by one of the UK’s most prominent promotions with one of the fastest rising talents in the world…..it’s time.

Will Ospreay Challenges Vader, Heated Twitter Exchange Ensues

International wrestling sensation Will Ospreay and WWE legend Vader got into a heated conversation on Twitter early Friday morning that started with Ospreay challenging Vader to a match. The challenge is in response to recent criticism from Vader, who was outspoken about Ospreay’s recent classic with Ricochet in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Battle of the Super Juniors event. When the Ospreay-Ricochet match started getting some mainstream attention due to its state of the art action, Vader said the match displayed “blatant acrobatics with no story” and could have been performed by two high school gymnasts. Ospreay first responded to Vader with a nod to his Vader bomb finisher:

On Friday morning, he issued the challenge. Here’s the full exchange:

WWE’s Interest In Will Ospreay, Rumored Names For Next Tryout Camp

WWE continues to get aggressive with pursuing new talents as they plan to “raid” NXT for the upcoming brand split. Officials want experienced wrestlers who they can use on tour instead of the original idea of using the PC to take athletes and train them to wrestle.

It’s believed Big Damo and Noam Dar will join Moose and Tommy End at the September PC tryouts in Orlando. Dar will be working the WWE CWC later this month.

On a related note, WWE officials really wanted top star Will Ospreay for the CWC but he is signed to a two-year deal with New Japan. There was talk of WWE possibly trying to work with NJPW to get Ospreay in the tournament.

WATCH: Ospreay vs Ricochet From NJPW BOSJ 2016

https://youtu.be/_TgbxaQcheQ

It has become one of the most talked about matches in recent history and now the bout between Ricochet and Will Ospreay is available to view for free on NJPW World. The match headlined Night 6 of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament and has drawn a ton of attention (mostly positive) for its groundbreaking athleticism.

  • What did you think of the match? Was it the evolution of pro-wrestling or just another spot-fest? Leave a comment and let us know.

In his latest blog over at JRsBarBQ.com, Jim Ross congratulated both men for stealing the show and presenting a match that the entire industry is talking about.

“I watched the Will Ospreay vs Ricochet bout that has been the center of attention over the past few days and found the match to be a uniquely told story with an abundance of athleticism, high risk move sets and, most of all, great passion.  I certainly give the match a stellar grade but  I realize that it might not be everyone’s favorite sauce but that’s not a sin. Could the talents have slowed down a cadence and sold/registered a bit more? Of course they could and if they had it would have generated even more emotions to take away from the MOTY candidate. Pro wrestling needs diversity in multiple areas including the in ring presentations of today’s athletes.

Wrestling needs to be unpredictable, fundamentally sound, logical so as to not remove anyone watching from their zone of suspended disbelief and at a pace that the majority of the audience can process what they are seeing.”

Top British Independent Star Has Signed a 2 Year Contract with NJPW

Renowned Japanese wrestling correspondant ‘Enuhito’ has confirmed via twitter that Will Ospreay has officially signed a 2 year contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Ospreay made his debut for New Japan against Kushida at this year’s Invasion Attack PPV and is set to take part in the Best of The Super Juniors tournament.

Editorial: The British Are Coming

The British independent wrestling scene has never been better and produced more stars than right now. There are a litany of streaming outlets for domestic and international fans to enjoy and even the WWE have recognised the potential in the likes of PROGRESS and Revolution Pro, asking them to host qualifying matches for the Global Cruiserweight Series.

If you’ve never had the chance to check out the UK scene and the talent we have on offer then here are some names to get you started:

Zack Sabre Jr

As one of the biggest names to emerge from England, Zack Sabre Jr is the modern representation of the ‘World of Sport’ days of UK wrestling. His ability to lock in devastating submissions from multiple angles coupled with an MMA styled striking approach compare to the ROH days of Bryan Danielson and have seen him compete for companies across the globe.

Currently one of the highlights of the ever growing EVOLVE promotion, Sabre Jr looks set to break out onto the world stage as a featured attraction in the WWE Global Cruiserweight Series, check out the episode of Rev Pro TV below to see Zack take on recent NXT signee Shinsuke Nakamura:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q32CmYvWkD8

If you’d like to check some more Zack Sabre Jr matches then these are the ones to hunt down:

  • VS Chris Hero at PWG Mystery Vortex II
  • VS Roderick Strong at PWG Don’t Sweat the Technique and EVOLVE 45
  • VS Prince Devitt at PROGRESS Chapter 13 – (Available for free on Youtube)

‘The Villain ‘Marty Scurll

Current PROGRESS World Champion Marty Scurll knows what it takes to be a great heel, his transition from ‘Party Marty’ to ‘The Villain’ has completely transformed and elevated his star power to where he is main eventing across the UK.

His feud with Will Ospreay has been one of the reasons the UK scene has such a buzz at the moment, their match at PROGRESS Chapter 25 where Marty took the PROGRESS title started a succession of great contests including a bout at Rev Pro’s High Stakes that arguably stole the show (the main event was AJ Styles against ZSJ) through to their Wrestlemania weekend bout at Wrestlecon.

For a small glimpse of Marty’s brilliance check out this match from Rev Pro TV against his arch nemesis Will Ospreay:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWlDnEPL2aM

Other MS matches to check out are:

  • VS AJ Styles (C) vs Will Ospreay  – Revolution Pro Uprising 2015 (this is one of the best matches I have ever seen live)
  • Vs Will Ospreay  – Revolution Pro Wrestling High Stakes 2016
  • 9 MAN THUNDERB*STARD MATCH – PROGRESS Wrestling Chapter  2016 (purely for Marty’s shenanigans)

Will Ospreay

Having recently signed for NJPW as the newest member of CHAOS, Will Ospreay looks set to rise rapidly to the top, he has an unbelievable amount of athletic ability and being in his early twenties he has a good amount of time to build his reputation on the world stage.

The highlight of his UK run is arguably his match with Jimmy Havoc at PROGRESS Chapter 20. After a year of dominating the main event scene; Havoc dropped the title in spectacular fashion after a gruelling match involving multiple chair strikes, thumbtacks and a 630 Senton from Ospreay.

Check out this match with Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne) from Rev Pro TV #8 below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2jLaiMiF9w&feature=youtu.be

Other WO matches to check out are:

  • VS Kazuchika Okada – RPW Global Wars UK (the match that got him signed to New Japan)
  • VS Matt Sydal – RPW Summer Sizzler 2015 (the first Ospreay match I was lucky enough to see live)
  • VS Mark Andrews – PWG BOLA 2015
