NJPW Releases Jay White Promo Pre-Okada Attack

The CHAOS stable in New Japan is seeing some turbulent times. This past Sunday’s Destruction in Kobe event saw ‘Switchblade’ Jay White attack the leader of the group Kazuchika Okada and align himself Okada’s former manager Gedo.

New Japan has now released a promo video of White before the attack happened. This follows his bout earlier in the night where he joined Will Ospreay and YOSHI-HASHI to defeat Taguchi Japan (Juice Robinson, Toa Henare & David Finlay). White took the win in that bout after hitting the Switchblade on Henare.

In his backstage promo Jay White began with the comment “Very familiar feeling. Every single time that Okada or YOSHI (I am calm) try to take the lead and think they know better we end up losing. Every single time…LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TODAY.” White was joined by Will Ospreay in the backstage area and referred to directly stating “Will (Ospreay) did great, nothing against Will, YOSHI wanted to beat them from the start himself…and then he GOT CAUGHT and got his ar*e kicked.” Luckily Will saved him then your’s truly had to finish the job just like that. We won and that’s the job…Okada, good luck.” Jay White then left the scene for Ospreay to make some final comments. You can check out the full promo below:

Frontline Wrestling Unveil On Demand Service

Will Ospreay’s new promotion Frontline Wrestling appear to be going from strength to strength.

Frontline has new revealed their new On Demand streaming service via the Pivotshare platform. The service is available at a $4.99 per month cost and features the first two shows from the company. ‘Build Me An Empire’ and ‘S.P.I.R.I.T’ took place earlier this year and feature a stellar line up of talent. You can find more information via the tweet at the bottom of the page.

Bulld Me An Empire is certainly worth the cost alone. The main event featured an outrageous bout between Chris Ridgeway and Japan’s KENOH. Ridgeway is an accomplished ‘strong style’ combatant in his own right but this match at the top of the card will be the bout that catapults him into the upper echelons of both the UK scene and, hopefully, Japan (much like how Ospreay’s bout against Okada for Rev Pro got him on a plane going East). We spoke to Ospreay earlier this year and he discussed his want to bring ‘puroresu‘ to the United Kingdom, this big time main event and the reaction from the crowd in attendance seems to solidify that strong style/puroresu has truly arrived in Britain.

‘Phenomena’ will be the first of Fight Forever’s huge tour. With dates also lined up for London (7th), Bristol (8th) and Liverpool (9th). Other names confirmed for the upcoming tour are:

  • NXT UK Star Zack Gibson
  • Brandi Rhodes
  • Flip Gordon
  • MLW Star Jimmy Havoc
  • NXT UK Star James Drake
  • 205 Live Star ‘Flash’ Morgan Webster
  • NXT UK Star El Ligero
  • IMPACT/WoS star Joe Hendry
  • WoS Star Rampage Brown
  • NXT UK/PROGRESS Star Travis Banks

The company has also confirmed that there will be a ‘Something To Wrestle with Bruce Prichard’ live podcast and The Godfather’s ‘Pimp Party.’ Here’s some info from the company’s press release:

Will Ospreay Calls First Dibs On Match With Neville

Will Ospreay has called shotgun on facing Neville first now that the wrestler formerly known as Pac is a free agent.

Last night, it was reported that Neville is no longer contracted to WWE. His pending return to the independents and non-WWE promotions has wrestlers and wrestling fans alike excited.

https://twitter.com/willospreay/status/1033268894998437888?s=21

Neville/Pac Free Of WWE

Few details are available at the moment as it concerns how Neville’s time with WWE ended. It’s possible that his contract ended but it is also possible he and the company came to an agreement on his early release.

It does appear, however, that Cody and the Young Bucks were aware ahead of time before news broke. The members of the Elite dropped a few hints through social media in the days leading up to the news breaking.

https://twitter.com/MattJackson13/status/1032726642823589888

Matt Jackson and Cody’s talk regarding Neville may have been a coincidence or it may not have been.

It has been over 6 years since Neville was a free agent. He began his career with WWE in mid-2012 and debuted in NXT that October. During his time with NXT, he won the NXT title once and the tag-team championships twice, once with Oliver Grey and once with Corey Graves. On the main roster, he was a former 2x Cruiserweight Champion but is believed to have become unsatisfied with his role, the product, or both.

His last match in WWE was on October 7th, 2017. He defeated Enzo Amore by DQ at a 205 Live house show.

PROGRESS Announce Ospreay vs Havoc 2/3 Falls and No DQ

PROGRESS Wrestling has announced the final match for Jimmy Havoc before their Wembley Arena show. The longest reigning Champion in PROGRESS’ history will be taking on his greatest rival, Will Ospreay. The match was actually originally scheduled to happen at the Wembley event in September. Unfortunately plans had to change due to Ospreay’s NJPW contract and a pre-existing date in Los Angeles.

The stakes in this bout are extremely high. Havoc has 2 wins in the ‘3 and In’ series, if he bests Ospreay then he goes into Wembley as Number 1 contender to the PROGRESS World Championship. Ospreay however has different plans and wants to end the man who he refers to now as ‘James,’ claiming that Havoc is a shell of his former self. Ospreay famously ended Havoc’s record title run at the top of PROGRESS at Chapter 20.

To add extra weight and precedence to the bout PROGRESS has announced a special guest referee. Former member of Havoc’s ‘REGRESSION’ stable and Ospreay’s longtime tag partner Paul Robinson will be the man in charge for this No DQ, 2 out of 3 falls match.

The two men that defined PROGRESS and put them on the global stage will be facing for possibly the final time. It. Ends. Here.

Report: WoS Ratings for Episode 4, Did The Show Hold It’s Number?

WoS/World of Sport held their third episode this weekend on ITV and the ratings for the show appear to have been released.

The first few week’s numbers released by an ‘insider’ at the DigitalSpy website were instantly refuted by a production staff member at ITV. These latest numbers for the August 18th episode have again been revealed by a user at the DigitalSpy forum however these do not appear to have yet been disputed.

Here’s the reported number:

  • 17:00 – WOS Wrestling: 545k (5.3% Share)

Here’s the number for last week’s episode:

  • 17:00 – WOS Wrestling: 539k (4.9% share)

Interestingly the number does appear to have held. Considering that we’ve now had three weeks of around 500k-550k it’s fair to say that the show has found it’s audience.

Competition from the Premier League

Many fans in the UK were expecting the number to fall for week 4. Last week saw the return of Premier League football/soccer and this week had a huge game in Chelsea vs Arsenal. It’s a good sign that WoS actually held up against a match that even ‘casual’ soccer fans go out of their way to watch. Many expected the number to completely bomb in this time slot as the 17:30 kickoff is a huge part of the Premier League’s schedule.

ITV also attempted to create an audience for WoS from 3pm. The broadcast of The Scorpion King at 15:15 as a lead-in was an attempt to bring extra viewers to WoS. Having a film featuring the biggest Superstar on the planet in The Rock is a good attempt to draw causal fans, however Scorpion King drew 609k viewers with a 7.2% share, so a good portion did leave before WoS even started.

Return of Will Ospreay

The return of Will Ospreay made a huge impact on the episode. Ospreay’s bout with Martin Kirby was head and shoulders above the rest of the series so far. Grado also appears to be moving into a more ‘mid-card’ position. The ICW star teamed with Davey Boy Smith Jr for the ongoing Tag Team Championship tournament.

Two Top Matches Confirmed for WoS Episode 4 (08/18)

ITV will be broadcasting the 4th episode of WoS wrestling tomorrow at 5pm GMT. Two of the matches for the programme have been announced and it appears as though WoS are looking to stack the deck for episode 4 with a top UK showcase match and a showing for the inaugural WoS Women’s Champion.

Will Ospreay will be returning to the show for the first time since episode 1. The ‘Aerial Assassin’ will be taking on one of the most respected stars in UK independent wrestling: Martin Kirby. Kirby is currently embroiled in a feud with IMPACT/DEFIANT star Joe Hendry and it is likely that he will get involved in some way Saturday night.

WoS Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray will also be in action. The ICW star became the first ever Women’s Champion in World of Sport history when she defeated Viper and Bea Priestley in episode 2. Ray’s opponent has not yet been revealed.

NGW stars Nathan Cruz and Adam ‘Flex’ Maxted have also confirmed that they will be continuing their run in the Tag Team Championship tournament. The ‘bromance’ team, BT Gunn & Stevie Boy and Alpha Bad (Iestyn Rees and Kip Sabian) are also still in the running.

You can check out our report on the ratings for Episode 3 here, including information on the potential chance of a renewal for the iconic British wrestling brand.

Will Ospreay Hypes WoS and Former X Division Champion and UK Legend Announced for Tonight’s Show

WoS/World of Sport will be returning to ITV for their second episode tonight at 5pm UK time.

Arguably the biggest news emanating from last week’s (re)debut episode was the appearance of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Will Ospreay. The CHAOS stable member took part in a bout against Davey Boy Smith Jr which gained plaudits not just from the ‘hardcore’ fans of the UK scene but also from the more ‘causal’ viewers who voiced their opinions on social media. Ospreay’s aerial prowess has seemingly helped to change perceptions of professional wrestling amongst viewers in the UK.

Ospreay took to Twitter himself earlier today and hyped his role as part of the WoS roster, claiming that “With me on the show, ill happily put on my back and run with it. There is no one on that roster that is capable of doing the things I can do and every match I get better & better. Trust me, the team we have are gonna change the scene for the better.”

https://twitter.com/WillOspreay/status/1025636944729059328

Also confirmed for tonight’s episode is one of the most well respected legends in British wrestling history: Doug Williams.

The former TNA X-Division Champion will be making his way to ITV having missed the original World of Sport way back in the 80’s. Williams took to Twitter to speak on the historical significance of this; “started training in 1993 which means I missed appearing on Wrestling on ITV by 4 years. However, tomorrow, after a 25 year career I finally make my debut on ITV 1 when Wrestling is back on on a Saturday afternoon!”

WoS/World of Sport Stars React to Debut Show

WoS/World of Sport’s first show of their re-debut took place tonight on Britain’s biggest mainstream channel ITV. The programme is set for a 10 show stint running into October and is available to every television set in the United Kingdom.

The stars of the show took to Twitter after the event to react to pro wrestling returning to British television, including Davey Boy Smith Jr, Will Ospreay, Grado, Stu Bennett, SoCal Val and Kip Sabian.

You can check out all of our WoS coverage via the UK section at the top of the site, including the news of a Major Title Change on Night 1, Stu Bennett hyping the reboot, our Exclusive interview with Viper/Piper Niven and our Editorial explaining why WoS heading to mainstream British television is a really big deal.

Will Ospreay’s new promotion Frontline Wrestling has released their debut show ‘Build Me An Empire’ on demand via Vimeo. The show featured some of the finest performers on the UK scene as well as two of Dragon Gate’s most iconic stars.

The rest of the stellar card stacked up as follows:

Two Matches Confirmed for Frontline Wrestling’s Second Show S.P.I.R.I.T

Frontline Wrestling has announced the first two matches for their upcoming S.P.I.R.I.T event which takes place on August 21st from the Stratford Circus in London, England.

Company owner Will Ospreay recently sent out his appreciation to the fans in attendance for Frontline’s first show ‘Build Me an Empire’ stating: 28/06/18. 19:30. We built an empire. Thank you. Hope to see you back on the 21st August.”

DEFIANT Announce Will Ospreay vs WALTER for Stacked ’18

DEFIANT Wrestling has announced that former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and one of the biggest stars to emerge from the thriving UK scene Will Ospreay will be taking on WALTER as part of their upcoming Stacked ’18 event which takes place Sunday August 26th from the Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester, England.

The clash of styles between the two performers is evident, Ospreay is regarded as one of if not THE greatest high flying performer on the planet, although he is well versed in the British mat-based style. WALTER however is one of the most dominant forces in wrestling and will use his powerhouse style to keep Ospreay at bay. This has the potential to be one of the best matches of 2018.

If you’ve never heard of WALTER then he is certainly a performer that should be on your radar. The Austrian powerhouse has been dominating the Tag and Heavyweight divisions in wXw, PROGRESS and PWG over the past couple of years and he is now being slated as a future WWE/NXT signee (even if he denies any sort of negotiations). The de-facto leader of the Ringkampf stable (alongside Timothy Thatcher and previously NXT roster member Axel Dieter Jr) has a ton of potential on the world stage and has already garnered critical praise from the likes of Dave Meltzer, who gave his PWG All-Star Weekend bout against Zack Sabre Jr from October 2017 a 5 star rating.

Tickets for the show are available to purchase here.

Will Ospreay Is Bringing The ‘Young Lion’ Concept to Britain with his new Frontline Promotion

Will Ospreay’s new promotion Frontline Wrestling held their debut show ‘Build Me An Empire’ this past Thursday and the show was met with acclaim from the fans in attendance.

During our exclusive interview with Ospreay earlier this year he stated that wanted the Frontline brand to be defined as British Puroresu, saying that “I have fallen in love with the Japanese style of wrestling, and not just the wrestling itself. The story telling, the Drama, the production. Most likely cause I’ve been sucked into that New Japan vibe.

One of the major elements of the new promotion is the inclusion of ‘Young Lions,’ a concept that this hugely prevalent in Japanese wrestling culture and adds an extra layer of ‘Puroresu’ to the aesthetic of Frontline. The company has issued a press release highlighting the crop of talent chosen to be their first batch of ‘Young Lions’ and they are as follows:

  • Cieran Donnelly

Former IPW:UK Tag Champion with DND. With Duggan heading over regularly to the New Japan LA Dojo, Cieran sees this as an opportunity to rebrand and master the Young Lions Programme.

  • Joshua Joesph

Trained by The Wild Boar & Mark Andrews, Josh passed the course with flying colours. Showing his mix of strength & agility. He’s also undefeated in amateur mixed martial arts.

  • Nico Angelo

Another man trained by Mark Andrews, Nico has an Olympic Power Lifting background. What sealed the deal was his incredible standing “Mooncent” (450 moonsault)

  • Scott Davis

Better known in his home promotion OTT, he has been an amateur wrestling from a young age. Scott sees this as a platform to finally stretch out to the U.K. scene and take over.

  • Cameron Thomas

Cameron trains at the LSLL and wrestles for Lucha Britannia. He had a huge stand out match with Jody Fleisch at the recent Project W show. Not much match experience however but the heart on this man will shine through more than anything.

  • Chris Gladden

Mostly know for his work in Apex. Yet still not completely satisfied with the work he portrays and believes he can offer more. Chris shows so much determination through every single drill & workout we threw at him and wants the responsibility of being a main player in the British Wrestling Scene.

Callum Newman

15 Years Old. But Callum has been wrestling since he was 10. A high-flyer but prides himself on his technical wrestling. As the youngest he has a long journey ahead of him but the level of talent in such a young man is astonishing.

  • Rhonda Powell

As the only Female, she completed the drills quicker than 40% of the male athletes. Her cardio was the stand out & great coordination. Not much match experience however a lot of potential to become a strong stand out in Frontline

  • Scott Wainwright

Former WCPW Tag Champion, but nearly forced into retirement after a serious stomach injury. After rebuilding his strengths and losing a significant amount of weight, Scott has decided to take part in the Young Lions Programme to redesign himself. “Start from the bottom, climb to the top”

  • Nedeem Al-Astrabadi

Absent due to a family emergency, Ned has unlimited potential to be on of the best wrestlers in the world. Mainly seen as part of Triple L promotion as their former champ, he is one of the most charismatic characters you will ever meet, but has agreed to strip it back and allow his ability to shine through.

Will Ospreay Talks Dream Match, Favorite NJPW Bout, His Ideal WWE Opponent

Former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay recently offered a Q&A for his Twitter followers (@WillOspreay) ahead of his Frontline Promotions’ debut show ‘Build Me An Empire’ which takes place tomorrow night from the Stratford Circus in London.

Several topics came up during the Q&A including Will’s all time dream opponent, his favourite New Japan Pro Wrestling bout, who his ideal opponent in WWE would be and much more. Check out the highlights below.

  • @notyash1 If you were to join NXT, who would you face & why? – Me & Ricochet as a team Vs Tyler & Trent
  • @DRose502 If you were to wrestle any wrestler past or present, who would it be and why? – Eddie Guerrero
  • @BondzillaTb Favourite Njpw match? – Okada vs Kenny. All of them
  • @bmaheshp1 Who is your favourite wrestler from NXT? – Gargano is like the man
  • @juan_rafael12 Why would not you like to go to WWE? – Right now I offer nothing. I wanna be able to say I satisfied myself on the independents & in Japan. Then if I ever went go knowing I can help and not just be another guy
  • @jyoonhorseback If you moved up to heavyweight would you change up your wrestling style or would you continue to be a flippy lad? – I’ve changed my style anyway. Look at my first match with Kushida in Invasion Attack to my match with Hiromu in Dominion. I’ve evolved over time. In fact my strikes are now on the same level as my high flying
  • @JoshuaVisser Who would you’re ideal opponent be in the WWE? – Gargano or Rollins

WWE and NJPW Stars Pay Tribute to Mitsuharu Misawa

Today marks the 9 year anniversary of Japanese wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa’s passing. Several stars from the likes of WWE, New Japan Pro Wrestling and beyond have posted tributes to one of the greatest performers of all time (you can see these at the bottom of the article).

Misawa made his professional debut in August of 1981 for All Japan Pro Wrestling. Misawa would go on to inherit the position of AJPW President following the passing of Giant Baba in 1999 and he went on to form the now iconic Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion.

Misawa is regarded as one of the greatest performers in the history of the industry, he famously garnered a six star rating from Dave Meltzer for his bout against Toshiaki Kawada in 1994 and his trilogy against Kenta Kobashi is heralded alongside Flair/Steamboat as one of the greatest ever.

Several stars such as Chris Hero/Kassius Ohno, William Regal and Daniel Bryan regard Misawa as one of their in ring inspirations. The Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion also holds a tribute show every June in honour of their founder.

The Dragon Gate veteran will be taking part in a run across the UK shore sagainst the likes of Mark Haskins (Frontline Puro) and Chris Brookes (RIPTIDE) and this bout against Devlin should be dynamite.

WWE linked Superstar WALTER has also been announced for the June 29th event, the former PROGRESS ATLAS and wXw Unified World Champion does not yet have an opponent named but with the wealth of stars available Internationally right now he should be matched with someone stellar.

World of Sport (WOS) recently held TV tapings at EPIC Studios in Norwich, England. The returning brand will be shown on one of the UK’s largest channels in ITV and the first episode of this second ‘reboot’ attempt is likely to air around July 21st.

One of the biggest pieces of news coming from the tapings include the announcement of new WOS General Manager Stu Bennett/Wade Barrett who recently stepped down from his role as the DEFIANT Wrestling GM, this move now sheds more light on that decision.

The following stars have also been contracted by ITV to feature on the new 10-part show: Will Ospreay, Davey boy Jr, Grado, Moose, Primate, Joe Hendry, Martin Kirby, Iestyn Rees, Viper, Kay Lee Ray, Bea Priestley, Sha Samuels, Doug Williams, Rampage Brown, Lionheart, Nathan Cruz, Kip Sabian, Robbie X, Adam Maxted, Gabriel Kidd, CJ Banks and Liam Slater.

According to live reports the action on the show is far superior to that of the original New Years Eve special from a few years ago. It was also noted that the show would be heavily focused on two names in particular; Will Ospreay and Davey Boy Jr who had the most anticipated and hyped bout during the tapings.

Will Ospreay and Aussie Open Announced for DEFIANT ‘Built to Destroy’

DEFIANT Wrestling have announced two names for their upcoming ‘Built to Destroy’ PPV event, one a returning champion and the other one of the hottest tag teams currently on the UK independent scene.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay will be making his long awaited return to the company, his opponent has not yet been named. The ‘Aerial Assassin’ is due to perform in New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament from May 18th and you can catch his first round bout against Ishimori for free on NJPWWorld.com on night 1.

Aussie Open are the other confirmed name for the PPV, Comprising Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis, Aussie Open are one of the most dynamic and exciting teams to emerge from the UK scene in the past year. Having first formed in the ATTACK! promotion back in August they have been challenging for titles in the likes of HOPE, Rev Pro, IPW:UK and CZW which is an absolute testament to their talent and ability to gel so quickly as a unit.
