Internal WWE Memo Leaks & Reveals Banned Phrases Announcers Can’t Use

A leaked memo that dates back a few years revealed a few things about the way Vince McMahon wants his product presented on the air – and what phrases have been specifically banned.

Vince McMahon apparently banned the phrase, “Granddaddy of them all” when referring to WrestleMania. Apparently the feeling is that the phrase makes the show feel dated and old. Additionally, no one is allowed to use the word “choke” when describing various submission holds. The Undertaker’s “Hell’s Gate” finisher was also renamed “Triangle Submission Hold” (despite the fact that it’s actually a gogoplata, which isn’t exactly the triangle choke commonly seen in MMA, even though it looks similar. Gogoplata’s are much more rare, and the only one that comes to mind is Nick Diaz’s gogoplata submission victory over Takanori Gomi at one of the final PRIDE events in the U.S., where the outcome was overruled due to Diaz popping hot for marijuana in his post-fight drug test).

Other banned phrases include “title changes hands,” which is mainly directed at the WWE announcers, and comes from WWE producer Kevin Dunn.

Also, McMahon has banned terms such as “Five Star Match” and “Match Of The Year.” Additionally, WWE announcers were informed that they should no longer read “dirt sheets” with the feeling being it influences what they might say or refer to in commentary.

Stephanie McMahon sent a memo out to the announcers, informing them that they are never to use the phrase “the referee didn’t see it” when a heel is doing something behind the referee’s back. Stephanie wrote in the memo that it makes it seem like the announcers are treating the fans like they are in grade school. She wrote that she would prefer phrases such as “the referee’s vision was impaired,” or “the referee’s vision was blocked.”

The words “hatred” and/or “hate” were banned, as well as “blood” or references to bleeding. Finally, the announcers were told never to say a talent doesn’t care about winning a particular match.

I know there are a lot of people that will say otherwise, but I could care less what they say. I’m the one who wakes up every day and knows how hard I’ve worked for this. Booker T Speaks On Ultimate Warrior In WWE HOF, Predicts WrestleMania 40 Main Event

The following are highlights from a recent interview with WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T:

On WrestleMania compared to other events: “WrestleMania is the biggest deal of them all [major sporting events.] I mean its the spectacle of a lifetime. If you ever have the chance to be a part of it. I mean you guys got to experience the SuperBowl and now you’re going to be able to experience WrestleMania. It’s going to be awesome. Compared [to the SuperBowl] as far as what’s the biggest. Let me tell you WrestleMania is the biggest spectacle that I’ve ever seen and been a part of.”

On the new WWE Performance Center: “I haven’t had a chance to get there as often as I need to. I have my own facility in Houston. I’m trying to filter the wrestling business. You know, more and more students are trying to get it from all different perspectives. But I’ll tell you the training center is something that we’ve needed for quite some time just so the avid fan always wonders ‘How do I get into this business?’ And for us to promote it! Now, we have our own form of something that you can come down and be a part of, try to get into this business. You know there are a lot of kids out there that I feel like we might be losing. We need to advertise a little more and show these guys that you can have a great career in professional wrestling, and the longevity is great as well.”

On The Ultimate Warrior in the WWE Hall Of Fame: “Everybody’s wondering if the Ultimate Warrior is going to go in [the Hall of Fame,] that’s one thing… Ultimate Warrior is probably the one guy that people have been wondering for many, many years, just like Bruno Sammartino. It would be great to take his place in immortality. He deserves it. Hew was great for what he did for the time in wrestling… Back in the day, those guys really were trailblazers, they were one of the reasons that I wanted to be one of those guys.”

On his prediction for the WrestleMania 40 main event: “Dean Ambrose versus Dolph Ziggler.”

On working with Boyd Pierce and Mid-South attempting to go national: “Boyd was a funny guy who loved to make people laugh. A natural born showman. Mid South attempting to go national was our best hope of surviving in our economically depressed base area.”

On Kurt Angle ever returning to WWE: “Truly, never say never. Kurt in the WWE HOF makes sense….wrestling? Not so sold on that except perhaps a retirement match at WrestleMania.”

On working with TNA in the future: “No disrespect taken…Just not interested in working w/ any wrestling company at this time.”

On JR being rude to fans asking about his contract status: “I’d suggest I interact w/ fans as well as anyone in the business or at least I try. I certainly don’t feel that I’m better than any wrestling fan or anyone else. At the same time, my exact contractual status w/ any organization isn’t something I care to discuss. Bottom line, I’m no longer employed at WWE and look forward to the future engaging other entities. Will my existing work in WWE, WCW and Mud Soth continue to exist on WWE projects? I’d say most likely to that.”

Boxing Champion Floyd Mayweather Wins WrestleMania-Related Lawsuit

Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather won a lawsuit against a music producer who claimed he illegally used a song of his during his WrestleMania 24 ring entrance, when he squared off against WWE Superstar Big Show in one of the main events of the evening.

The music producer, Anthony Lawrence Dash, sued Mayweather in 2010, claiming Mayweather did not have the rights to use the song at the annual wrestling pay-per-view. Dash sued Mayweather, WWE and others for a reported $150,000 in damages, but a judge recently ruled in Mayweather’s favor.

According to the ruling, Dash was not entitled to a cut of the profits from Mayweather’s use of the music, as he couldn’t prove Mayweather, or WWE, made any money off of the song.

Updates On Future WrestleMania Locations & Kassius Ohno’s Heat In NXT

– As we’ve reported in recent weeks, NXT star Kassius Ohno has had a lot of heat on him with management. Ohno was pulled from several NXT TV tapings, reportedly because he was not taking his workouts serious enough and was not improving his physique. The latest on this situation is that Ohno has been putting over other wrestlers at recent NXT live events and has been removed from the intro of NXT’s show on Hulu.

Detroit Ruled Out As Possible Host Of WrestleMania 32

The following is an excerpt from a new article in the Windsor Star:

The joint bid between Detroit and Windsor to bring WrestleMania 32 to Ford Field in 2016 has been turned down, said Dave Beachnau, Detroit Sports Commission executive director.

Despite many rumours circulating Friday in social media stating Detroit as the front runner to host the professional wresting pay-per-view event, they didn’t make the short list.

“We were notified back in June,” Beachnau said, who wants to put the gossip to rest. “There is no truth to it. I don’t know where people are getting this information.”

There were many blogs and tweets stating Detroit was among the final three, with Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas. Reportedly, the WWE is expected to make its decision at the end of the month and an announcement is expected to be made in early 2014.

“We haven’t heard from them since,” Beachnau said, after talking to them in June. “If we are back on that list, they haven’t told me.”

According to Beachnau, the WWE’s decision process is very confidential and they haven’t publicly announced the WrestleMania 32 short list.

Curtis Axel Talks How He Got His Name, Training Rock For WrestleMania, Paul Heyman

The following are highlights from a recent Carroll County Times Q&A with WWE Superstar Curtis Axel:

Did you have an input on your current ring name, Curtis Axel?

When I became Michael McGillicutty, ever since that point, I was throwing hundreds of names at them. And I’m sure Axel Curtis or Curtis Axel was in there somewhere. I was talking with a guy that works for WWE, Joey Styles, he actually brought that name up as one of the possibilities. But they didn’t want to go that route with me at first. They wanted to have me do my own thing and not even pay homage to anything to do with my family. Which, you know, is kind of nice, so I can try to do this on my own, and I tried to do the best I could with Michael McGillicutty without any TV time or whatever. But I’m sure that name was pitched as one of the hundreds I threw at them.

Any other memorable ones out of those hundreds you threw at them?

There were some ridiculous names. I just got sick of it. Most of them were Joe. Joe Able. Joe Mercer. Most of them were all Joe, you know? Able was one, I wanted to be Joe Able, like Cain and Abel, and try to do something with Kane. That was just one of them I kind of liked. I wasn’t really sold on any of them, I just wanted to get rid of Michael McGillicutty. That was my one priority.

Right before you came back as Curtis Axel, there was a picture that the Rock tweeted earlier this year, mentioning you were his workout partner when he was getting ready to face CM Punk and then I heard that you trained with Brock Lesnar before WrestleMania too. How did you end up working with them and what did you learn working with all-time greats like that?

The WWE office, they know they could trust me taking care of those guys. I was so honored. They flied me out to go train with the Rock and that guy is awesome. Training with him, he pays attention to every little detail and crowd reaction. The way he does his moves and he works, it’s so fluid. It’s amazing the way he thinks and the way he works. And just picking his brain, he actually spent time with me and asked me what I did in the ring and different moves that I did, where I could place them to get more reaction from the people and all this kind of stuff. Just picking that guy’s brain, for me, was just unbelievable. I was so honored to be picked to go up there and train with him. And then Brock Lesnar, my god, that guy is a beast. I actually, I’ve known him for many years because he started with Brad Rheingans also, in Minnesota training with my dad, so him and my dad were close friends and all that stuff, so I kind of knew him anyway, so he could trust me and he knew he could help me because my dad helped him, and he likes to give back. He’s been up and down on this road back in the WWE for a little bit now. He’s been in my head, and he’s a Paul Heyman guy, and it’s cool to spend time and have him critique little things that I’m still doing and give me some advice. So it’s pretty sweet dude.

You mention you’re both Paul Heyman guys. How’s it been working with Paul Heyman? Do you guys travel on the road together and talk shop often?

Oh yeah. He’s a genius man. He’s been around the business for years and he’s like an encyclopedia. He tells me stories, like AWA stories when he was with my dad. That’s actually how we kind of got talking because there was a pitch out where he was actually going to manage my dad in AWA but it never went through, so I’m like, “well, why don’t you start with me?” And he was like, “yeah, yeah.” He’s like Brock Lesnar and the Rock you know, I can pick his brain and the guy is unbelievable on the microphone and he’s unbelievable when it comes to the ring psychology. He’s an evil genius and I couldn’t ask for a better guy to travel with and just pick his brain.

So you pitching the idea to him, is that how this partnership got started?

We were talking about it and I brought it up to him, what do you think about this, us being together? Brock’s part-time and CM Punk was hurt at the time and I was like, Paul, WWE needs Paul Heyman on television. So that was my pitch to him. But before that, before I was even with him, he would be at the live events and this Raw and Smackdown TVs and he would come up and give me advice. So I was like, man, if this guy wants to take time out of his busy day and help me out, I would approach him with everything I had and he’d help me out, and then I approached him with this pitch and he liked it. We would talk more about it; I think he might’ve brought it up to the higher-ups in WWE and here we are.

Bryan Replacing Cena, Cena’s Real Expected Return, Vince McMahon’s Birthday

-WWE has recently updated their advertising for upcoming live events now that John Cena will no longer be able to appear on them. The biggest shuffle is Daniel Bryan being moved from the “B” shows to the “A” shows, in place of Cena as the singles headliner.

-Speaking of Cena, while publicly the statement from both he and the WWE side is that they are expecting him back by WrestleMania, apparently the expectation is that he will be back in time for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. That would be just under five months after his surgery, which is pushing the recovery process slightly. As noted, especially with Cena, returning sooner than scheduled when dealing with injuries is not out of the ordinary.

-WWE CEO Vince McMahon celebrates his 68th birthday this Saturday. McMahon was born on August 24, 1945.

-ESPN personality and former WWE broadcaster Jonathan Coachman appeared on the “Mike and Mike” show this morning on ESPN Radio answering questions from Twitter regarding WWE.

WWE Changed Lesnar/Punk Finish At SSlam, Lesnar/Undertaker Likely For WMXXX

According to a recent report, WWE changed the originally planned finish to the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match at the recent SummerSlam pay-per-view event in Los Angeles. The decision was made to switch the finish in the middle of the last week leading up to the event.

Apparently one of the main reasons WWE made the switch was because The Undertaker has reportedly agreed to work against Lesnar at the upcoming WrestleMania XXX event in 2014.

The general consensus within WWE was that if they are going to promote Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX, then Lesnar shouldn’t lose to Punk at SummerSlam, as that would have been his final match before the ‘Taker bout, and would send him into WrestleMania with a 2-3 overall record since returning to the company.

Big Update On Which Cities Will Host WrestleMania 31 & 32

WWE is currently in the process of finalizing which cities will host WrestleManias 31 (in 2015) and 32 (in 2016).

Lex Luger Speaks On Being On WCW Nitro Debut Show, WWE Title Rumors, Religion

The following are highlights from a recent interview with wrestling legend Lex Luger.

On whether or not he was informed that he would win the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 10: “Contrary to what people believe, I was never told I was going to be given any kind of title. The only discussion me and Vince [McMahon] had was what to do with the Lex Luger character in the future if he DID decide to put the title on me. But no, I was never told I’d be WWF Champion at any point.”

On appearing on the debut edition of WCW Monday Nitro: “On reflection, that was a pretty bad move by me. Me and Vince had a verbal agreement. I worked for him for 6 months without any sort of contract as my contract had expired. My mistake came when WCW signed me. I didn’t get to have a conversation with Vince to tell him I’d be leaving. But that was 100% my fault.”

On finding religion later in his life: “I feel wonderful now. I got to a point in my life where I realized that God is God and I’m not. I was beneath rock bottom but for whatever reason God put people in my life and he showed me the way. A very supernatural experience and that’s the only way I can put it.”

Jim Ross Q&A: Superstars Switching From Heel To Face Too Often, WWE Stage Setup, More

The following are highlights from the latest online Q&A from the official website of WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:

On whether Backlash or Extreme Rules is a better follow-up to WrestleMania: “It all depends on the attractions….the talents invovled.”

On if anyone can match Shawn Michaels in his prime: “NXT will continue to make major contributions to the WWE primary roster over time. Some really good, potential stars there.”

On if RAW and SmackDown should go back to the elaborate stage set ups: “I haven’t given that much thought. Not big on my radar.”

On WWE switching talent from heel to face too often, specifically Alberto Del Rio: “Decision makes, due to the lack of main event depth, are constantly looking for the best roles for their top guys. ADR as a fan favorite was an experiment in my view but he’s a better villain.”

On which wrestling schools are the best: “Start with Lance Storm’s Academy in Calgary and take it from there.”

On if we’ll see the return of “The Stooges” Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco in the current HHH/Vince McMahon power struggle: “Highly unlikely.”
