Jim Ross Reacts To Sunday’s WWE Battleground PPV

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated his blog with his thoughts regarding this past Sunday’s Battleground pay-per-view. The show got a strong negative reaction from fans online, but JR says fans should get over it and focus on “more significant things in their lives.”

“While I admire and respect the passion of ‘rasslin fans, I can only hope that they are as passionate about the more significant things in their lives as they are about show biz athletics,” Ross said. “This may be like the ‘pot’ calling the ‘kettle’ black, too, I will readily admit. I’ve been as guilty as most in this department.”

Regarding the Punjabi Prison main event between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal, JR said they two men had an uphill battle getting fans to emotionally invest in the contest.

“Any time two major, main event level  matches have little to no ‘near falls’ included due to the structure of their match i.e. the Punjabi Prison bout and the Flag Match, it’s a risky premise. I’m still not sure that I could pass a quiz on the rules of the Punjabi Prison match which had challenging sight lines for TV through all the bamboo, etc. Those basic challenges can make it hard for the live audience to emotionally invest.”

Other topics discussed include AJ Styles & Kevin Owens’ US title match and Natalya picking up a victory in the Fatal 5-Way Elimination No. 1 Contender’s Match. Head over to JRsBarBQ.com to read the full blog.

WWE Battleground 2017 Recap & Reaction

    Kickoff Show:

    Aiden English vs Tye Dillinger

Aiden English came down to the ring and performed a song before the match. English referred to himself as the greatest thing the crowd will ever see and then proceeded to shush them when they began to boo. JBL then referred to Aiden English as “Adrian English”. The crowd chanted “10!” as Tye Dillinger made his way to the ring. English knocked Dillinger to the mat to start off the match and then took some time to pose in the ring as the crowd booed.

Dillinger connected with an Arm Drag and the “10!” chants broke out again. English sent Dillinger into the turnbuckle but Tye responded by leveling English with a Clothesline. Aiden connected with a headbutt then kneed Dillinger in the back and he went flying face-first into the second turnbuckle. Aiden English then posed in the ring and the Kickoff Show went to a commercial break.

When the Kickoff Show returned, English was still in control and had Dillinger in a Chin Lock. English then started singing “he’s not going anywhere” while the Chin Lock was applied. The crowd chanted “10!” as Tye powered his way back to his feet and broke the hold. Aiden leaped off the second rope but Dillinger was ready and connected with a Dropkick to English’s midsection.

Tye connected with a series of Clotheslines and then pulled down his knee pad. Dillinger went for the Tye Breaker but Aiden rolled out of the ring. Aiden returned to the ring and was planted with a Spinebuster from Dillinger for a two count. Tye perched English up on the top turnbuckle and joined him up there. Aiden headbutted Dillinger to the mat and connected with a Crossbody but Tye rolled through for a pinfall but Aiden kicked out. Aiden slammed Tye to the mat for a two count and English started to get frustrated in the ring. English then mocked Tye’s “10!” chant. English then slammed Dillinger face-first into the mat and pinned him for the victory.

    Winner: Aiden English

Reaction: Dillinger was very popular in NXT, but I was worried when he joined the main roster that WWE wouldn’t know what to do with him and he’d become just another guy. After losing to Aiden English clean during WWE Battleground’s Kickoff Show, I think that it is clear that WWE doesn’t see a lot in Dillinger right now.

    Main Card:

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs New Day

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were in the match and Big E was ringside. Kofi and Woods beatdown Jey to start off the match. Jimmy and Jey then isolated Woods in the corner and beat the hell out of him the next couple of minutes. Jey connected with a spin kick for a two count.

Jimmy was tagged in and he headbutted woods and Xavier fell to the mat in the corner. Jey got back into the match and shouted “too easy” as he leaped off the top rope onto Woods. Jey perched Woods up on the top rope and punched him in the face. Jey connected with a couple of chops and then went for a Superplex but Woods blocked it. Woods headbutted Jey three times and he finally fell to the mat. Woods then hit a Dropkick off the top rope and both Superstars fell to the mat.

Kofi and Jimmy were then tagged in. Kingston connected with a Dropkick onto Jimmy and followed it up with a Clothesline. Kofi hit the Boom Drop and started pumping up the crowd. Kofo went for a kick but Jimmy ducked. Kofi then punted Jey’s face from the ring apron. Jimmy charged at Kofi on the apron but missed and went flying outside the ring.

Kofi tried to leap onto both Jimmy and Jey outside the ring but they caught him and planted him with a Powebombed outside the ring. Back in the ring, Woods slammed Jimmy face-first into the mat for a two count. Jimmy lifted Woods up onto his shoulders and slammed him into the turnbuckle. Jey was then tagged in and connected with a Samoan Drop for a two count.

Jey charged at Woods in the corner but Xavier connected with an elbow. Jey hit Woods with a right hand and tagged in Jimmy. Woods battled back and climbed to the top turnbuckle. Woods leaped towards Jey Uso but Jimmy flew into frame and connected with a Superkick for a two count as the crowd chanted “this is awesome!”.

Jimmy locked in a half Boston Crab on Woods in the middle of the ring. Woods screamed in agony as he slowly tried to make his way to the bottom rope. Big E tried to fire him up by slamming on the ring apron and Woods was able to finally reach the ropes. Kofi was then tagged in and planted Jimmy with the Midnight Hour for a two count.

Jimmy connected with a Superkick onto Kofi and then tagged in Jey who hit a Splash off the top rope and Kofi still kicked out. Jimmy was tagged in and he made his way to the top rope. Jey climbed up on the other side and Woods shoved him to the floor outside the ring. Woods was tagged in and Kofi hit Jimmy with the Trouble in Paradise. Woods then connected with an Elbow Drop off the top rope onto Jimmy for the victory.

Winners & New Tag Team Champions: New Day

Reaction: The Usos and New Day put on a terrific match tonight at WWE Battleground. The two teams work excellent together and I wouldn’t mind seeing this feud continue into SummerSlam.

    Baron Corbin vs Shinsuke Nakamura

The crowd chanted “Nakamura!” to start off the match and Corbin got right in Shinsuke’s face. Nakamura landed the first punch but Corbin quickly took control and sent Nakamura to the corner. Shinsuke battled back and connected with a series of kicks and Corbin rolled out of the ring to regroup. Nakamura dared Corbin to get back into the ring but Corbin took his time. Nakamura then rolled out of the ring and Corbin got back into the ring at the same time and taunted Nakamura.

Nakamura got back into the ring and Corbin connected with a right hand that knocked Nakamura to the mat. Corbin taunted the crowd and kneed Shinsuke in the chest. Corbin locked in the Bear Hug on Shinsuke in the middle of the ring. Nakamura hit a series of elbows to break the hold. Corbin went for a Body Slam but Nakamura blocked it and locked in a Triangle submission hold while Corbin was still standing. Corbin broke the hold and connected with a big boot for a two count.

Baron launched Shinsuke out of the ring and then slammed him into the barricade. The action returned to the ring and Corbin remained in control of the match. A “Corbin sucks!” chant broke out in the Wells Fargo Center. Corbin shouted “I’m doing pretty good dummies!” and then locked Nakamura in the Bear Hug again.

Shinsuke once again battled out of the hold. Corbin went for a Chokeslam but Nakamura connected with a kick. Shinsuke hit a running Dropkick and connected with a flurry of jabs while Corbin was trapped in the corner. Nakamura lifted Corbin up and draped him across the top rope and kneed him in the midsection twice. Nakamura went for the cover but Corbin powered out at two.

Corbin leveled Nakamura with a tremendous Clothesline and went for the cover but Nakamura kicked out at two. Corbin went for a Suplex but Nakamura countered into a series of knees into Corbin’s face and chest. Nakamura then lifted Corbin up for a Suplex but elected to drop Baron face-first to the mat instead. Nakamura went for the Kinshasa but Corbin caught him and planted him with Deep Six for a two count.

Corbin went for another Chokeslam but Shinsuke countered it into a Backstabber. Nakamura then booted Corbin in the face and then followed it up with a kick to the back of Baron’s neck. Shinsuke pumped up the crowd as Corbin was laid out on the mat. Nakamura waited for Corbin to get up but he didn’t. Nakamura then picked Corbin up by the hair and Baron hit a vicous low-blow. Baron Corbin was then disqualified. Corbin had a grin on his face after the match and celebrated with the MITB contract.

After the match, Corbin attacked Nakamura with the briefcase and planted Nakamura with the End of Days.

    Winner via DQ: Shinsuke Nakamura

Reaction: I figured that Corbin would have cheated to win, but instead he booted Nakamura below the belt and got himself disqualified. I thought this match was mediocre at best. I enjoyed Corbin barking back at the crowd while they were giving him a hard time. The crowd booed Corbin as he celebrated after the match at the top of the entrance ramp. WWE clearly has big plans for Corbin in the near future and they are trying their best to make the crowd hate him before he cashes in the MITB contract.

Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match To Determine #1 Contender For SmackDown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch vs Tamina vs Lana vs Natalya vs Charlotte

SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi joined commentary for this match. Charlotte went after Lana to start off the match and connected with a couple of chops. Lana then escaped out of the ring and Tamina attacked Charlotte. Tamina connected with a headbutt and Charlotte rolled out of the ring.

Lana dragged Becky out of the ring and slung her into the announce table. Lana then dragged Natalya out of the ring and then got back into the ring with Tamina. Charlotte joined them in the ring and was immediately beaten down by Tamina and Lana. Tamina held Charlotte up and Lana booted her in the face.

Charlotte pulled Tamina down by the hair and stomped on her. Tamina got up and attacked Charlotte before she could attack Lana. Tamina once again slammed Charlotte to the mat and then followed it up by launching Charlotte into the turnbuckle. Lana and Tamina then stomped on Charlotte in the corner.

Becky Lynch got back into the ring and attacked Lana. Charlotte and Becky both hit Exploder Suplexes onto Tamina and Lana at the same time. Becky and Charlotte then started battling and Charlotte connected with a Neckbreaker. Natalya then sprinted into the ring and hit a Dropkick onto Charlotte for a two count.

Becky planted Natalya with an Exploder Suplex. Lana then charged at Becky and Lynch planted her with an Exploder Suplex. Tamina then connected with a Superkick onto Becky Lynch and then planted Natalya with a Samoan Drop. Charlotte got back into the ring and knocked Tamina to the mat and she rolled out of the ring. Natalya then leveled Charlotte with a Clothesline and locked in the Sharpshooter onto Charlotte in the middle of the ring. Lana charged into the ring and hit Natalya with a running Bulldog.

Becky then locked in the Dis-Arm-Her onto Lana and Tamina got into the ring and booted her in the face. Tamina then planted Becky Lynch with a Samoan Drop and then followed it up with a Spear onto Charlotte through the second rope. Becky locked in the Dis-Arm-Her to Lana again but Tamina broke it up. Becky locked Tamina in the Dis-Arm-Her and Tamina tapped out and was eliminated. Becky once again locked in the Dis-Arm-Her on Lana and Lana tapped out.

Natalya then rolled up Becky Lynch and grabbed her tights for leverage and Becky was eliminated. It was all of the sudden down to just Charlotte and Natalya in the match. Charlotte planted Natalya with a big boot for a two count. Natalya locked in an Arm Bar but Charlotte lifted her up and slammed her to the mat with a Powerbomb for a two count. Charlotte went for a Moonsault off the top rope but Natalya got her knees up. Natalya followed it up by slamming Charlotte’s head into the turnbuckle for the victory.

After the match, Naomi got into the ring and tried to shake Natalya’s hand. Natalya refused and walked away.

Winner & #1 Contender For SmackDown Women’s Championship: Natalya

Reaction: Once it got down to Charlotte and Natalya, I thought it was just a matter of time before Charlotte won. I didn’t see Natalya winning this match at all, because it seems like she never wins anything. I wasn’t a fan of how this match was executed. Tamina, Lana and Becky were eliminated within moments of each other and the finish of the match happened a short time after that. It felt like the match was going to be given a substantial amount of time and then all of the sudden everyone was eliminated.

United States Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs Kevin Owens

Owens started off the match in control and quickly applied a Chin Lock. Styles broke the hold but was knocked to the mat with a shoulder tackle by Owens. Styles then knocked Owens to the mat and Owens rolled out of the ring to regroup. Back in the ring, Styles planted Owens with a Dropkick and Owens once again rolled out of the ring.

Styles followed Owens outside the ring and launched him into the barricade. Styles tried to leap onto Owens on the barricade but Owens got out of the way and Styles hit the barricade head-first. Owens then lifted Styles up and slammed in into the ring post. Owens then brought Styles back into the ring and beat him down for a bit. Owens shouted “and that is why I am the real champ!” and the crowd booed.

Owens slowed the match down again and applied a Chin Lock in the middle of the ring. Owens shouted “I’m the Phenomenal One!” as the hold was locked in. AJ finally battled back to his feet but Owens dragged him back to the mat by his hair. Owens went for a Senton but Styles got his knees up. Owens responded by planting Styles with a DDT for a two count. Owens once again applied the Headlock in the middle of the ring.

AJ battled out of the hold and connected with a series of kicks and then knocked Owens to the mat with a Clothesline. Styles hit Owens with a forearm and then slammed Owens face-first into the mat for a two count. AJ went for the Styles Clash but Owens escaped. Styles then planted Owens with a Fireman’s Carry Neckbreaker for a two count.

Styles went for the springboard 450 Splash but Owens got his knees up. Owens went for the quick cover but Styles kicked out at two. Owens hit the Cannonball for another two count and shouted at the referee in the ring. Owens perched Styles up on the top turnbuckle and hit him with a chop across the chest. Styles escaped off the turnbuckle, put Owens in the Torture Rack and then slammed Owens to the mat for a two count.

AJ climbed up to the top turnbuckle but Owens sprung to his feet and hit the ropes and Styles fell crotch-first onto the turnbuckle. Owens went for the Superplex but Styles escaped and bounced Owens’ head off the top turnbuckle. AJ went for the Phenemenal Forearm but Owens rolled out of the ring and tripped Styles up on the ring apron. Styles fell onto his shoulder and then Owens slammed that shoulder into the ring post.

Styles connected with a Pele Kick and went for the Styles Clash but his shoulder gave out. Owens then lifted AJ up and threw him across the ring into the official. Owens leveled Styles with a Superkick. Owens went for the Pop-Up Powerbomb but Styles reversed it into the Calf Crusher in the middle of the ring. Owens countered the Calf Crusher into a Crossface as the official started to get back to his feet. Styles then locked Owens into a Crossface of his own. Owens then reversed it into a pinfall for the victory.

Winner & New United States Champion: Kevin Owens

Reaction: This match started out incredibly slow but picked up towards the end. The finish of the match was clunky. I haven’t been all that entertained by this feud and I’m hoping that Styles quickly gets his rematch so it can come to an end.

Jinder Mahal was shown working out with a resistance band backstage. The Singh Brothers informed Jinder Mahal that they cannot help him in his match tonight with Randy Orton. Mahal said that he alone will put an end to Orton’s legacy in the Punjabi Prison and he is not alone because of the 1.3 billion people in India that have his back. Mahal then continued to exercise with the resistance band.

Flag Match: John Cena vs Rusev

Rusev connected with a Clothesline early and controlled the first few minutes of this match. The crowd at the Wells Fargo Center was now completely silent. Cena battled back and connected with a couple right hands. Rusev then planted him with a DDT and mocked the crowd in the ring.

Cena battled back and hit Rusev with the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Rusev planted Cena with a Spinebuster and threw him out of the ring. Cena got back into the ring but Rusev slammed him to mat. Rusev grabbed the Bulgarian flag hung above the turnbuckle. Cena connected with a Dropkick that knocked Rusev to the mat. Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment and then climbed up the turnbuckle. Rusev brought him back down to the mat before Cena could grab the American flag. Cena then locked in the STF in the middle of the ring.

Finally, John Cena began climbing the turnbuckle and unhooked the American flag. Rusev booted Cena in the face and both flags were on the mat. Cena tried to bring the American flag up the entrance ramp but Rusev attacked him from behind. Rusev then slammed the steel steps into Cena’s head. Rusev then grabbed the Bulgarian flag and started making his way up the entrance ramp.

Cena grabbed Rusev’s leg and then the two battled on top of the entrance ramp. Cena threw Rusev into the LED board by the entrance ramp. Cena leaped off the American podium set up on the entrance ramp but Rusev caught him and planted him with the Fallaway Slam. The crowd started to come to life again when Rusev set up two tables on the entrance ramp. The crowd even broke out in an “ECW!” chant for a couple of seconds.

Rusev went for the Attitude Adjustment onto Cena off the podium, but Cena shoved Rusev off the steps. Rusev and Cena then connected with a Clothesline at the same time and both Superstars fell down on the entrance ramp. Cena then grabbed the American flag and made his way up the American podium. Rusev grabbed the flag stand and struck Cena with it and Cena fell off the podium. Rusev then locked in the Accolade on the entrance ramp.

Rusev grabbed the Bulgarian flag and made his way up the Bulgarian podium. Rusev tried to put the flag into the stand but Cena blocked him. Rusev dropped the flag and kicked Cena in the face. Rusev went for the Accolade again but Cena lifted him up onto his shoulders, climbed the American podium and connected with an Attitude Adjustment through the two tables on the entrance ramp. Cena then put the American flag into the stand on the American podium for the victory.

    Winner: John Cena

Reaction: I hated everything about this match. Once Rusev set up the tables next to the American podium, the finish was so predictable. I immediately knew that Cena would hit the Attitude Adjustment through the tables. JBL then made the bogus claim after the match that this could have been Cena’s biggest victory of his career. I doubt anyone will remember this match a month from now. I can’t help but think Rusev deserves better and this victory really does nothing for Cena at all. I hope that we don’t see another Flag Match for a long time. It was better when the competitors simply had to grab the flag from above the turnbuckle. Instead, they now have to walk around with the flag and set up on decorated steps. The whole thing was just dumb in my opinion.

The Ascension claimed that they were the attackers of Breezango in the latest episode of the Fashion Files. Breezango then showed them the ripped up fake horse head and Konor and Viktor freaked out in disgust and it was determined that they weren’t the attackers. The lights went out and Breezango were attacked from behind. Fandango was then dragged off screen by someone and “to be continued” appeared on the screen.

    Sami Zayn vs Mike Kanellis

Zayn controlled the match early and knocked Mike out of the ring. Sami went for a Suicide Dive but Maria got in the way. Mike then struck Sami from behind and then shared an eskimo kiss with Maria. The action then returned to the ring and Mike beatdown Zayn in the corner. Kanellis connected with a Clothesline and then booted Sami in the face for a two count.

Mike and Maria once again shared a kiss on the ring apron. Sami connected with a series of Clotheslines and then slammed Mike to the mat. Sami launched Mike out of the ring and then Moonsaulted on top of him. Back in the ring, Zayn climbed to the top rope and connected with a Crossbody for a two count. Zayn planted Kanellis with a DDT and geared up for an Exploder Suplex but Maria once again got in the way. The referee kicked Maria out of the ring and Zayn finally connected with the Exploder Suplex. Zayn then hit the Helluva Kick for the victory.

    Winner: Sami Zayn

Reaction: I don’t get it at all. Mike Kanellis defeated Sami Zayn on Tuesday’s SmackDown with the help of Maria in his WWE in-ring debut. I figured that the same thing would happen tonight and WWE would build both Mike and Maria up as insufferable heels. Instead, Sami picked up the victory and we are right back where we started when this feud began. This isn’t helping either Zayn or Kanellis and feels completely pointless.

WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match: Jinder Mahal (c) vs Randy Orton

WWE Champion Jinder Mahal’s entrance was first. Orton started out the match in control and beatdown Mahal in the corner. Mahal knocked Orton to the mat and called for one of the doors to be opened. Mahal had a minute to escape out of the door but Orton prevented him. Orton slammed Mahal into the “steel re-enforced bamboo” and the door was closed after a minute and that door was then shut for good. There were now three doors available to be opened in the Punjabi Prison.

Mahal then controlled the next couple of minutes of the match. Mahal then called for a different door to be opened. Orton planted Mahal with a Fallaway Slam. The timer expired on the second door and the second door was eliminated. There were now only two doors left in the Punjabi Prison to be opened.

Mahal tried to climb out of the inner-structure of the prison but Orton grabbed him. Orton slung Mahal off the prison and Mahal fell to the mat. The crowd started chanting “delete!” as the two Superstars traded punches. Orton knocked Mahal to the mat and called for another door to be opened. Shockingly, neither Superstar was able to escape the structure in time and the third door was shut.

Orton connected with a Powerslam and followed it up with a DDT while Mahal was hung up in between the ropes. Orton called for the final door to be opened and geared up for an RKO. Mahal was ready for it and kneed Mahal in the face. Mahal then went for the Khallas but Orton reversed it into the RKO. The Singh Brothers appeared and dragged Mahal out of the inner-structure as Orton was trapped inside.

Orton started to climb out of the prison and Orton climbed out of the inner-structure. Orton then joined Mahal on top of the outer-structure of the Punjabi Prison. Orton slammed Mahal’s head off the bamboo and Mahal fell to the floor. The Singh Brothers then dragged Orton down and beat the hell out of him. Mahal got back up to his feet as the Singh Brothers held Orton up. Mahal then booted Orton in the face and started climbing up the outer-structure of the Punjabi Prison.

Orton got back up and beatdown both of the Singh Brothers. Orton grabbed Mahal as he was still barely halfway up the structure. Both Orton and Mahal were back on the floor. Orton once again took out the Singh Brothers. Mahal then hit Orton with a kendo stick a couple of times. Orton bashed Mahal into the bamboo and grabbed the kendo stick. Orton struck Mahal with the kendo stick several times and then hit one of the Singh Brothers with it as well.

Randy once again started climbing the structure. Samir Singh then slid through one of the holes in the structure to the outside. Samir climbed up on the outside and met Orton at the top of the structure. Orton connected with a few right hands and Samir fell from the top of the prison through the announce table.

Mahal then climbed up the outer-structure and started trading punches with Orton. They both battled back down to the floor inside the prison. Mahal went for a kick but Orton ducked and Mahal got caught in the structure. Orton then planted Mahal with a DDT while Mahal’s leg was caught in the structure.

Orton grabbed a chair from under the ring and stuck both Sunil Singh and Jinder Mahal with it. Orton tried to climb up the structure again but Sunil grabbed his leg. Orton booted him off the structure and Sunil fell to the floor. The Great Khali then returned and grabbed Randy Orton by the throat through the Punjabi Prison. Mahal then started climbing the Punjabi Prison as Khali had Orton trapped halfway up the structure. Mahal then escaped the Punjabi Prison for the victory.

Winner & Still WWE Champion: Jinder Mahal

Reaction: Everyone expected Mahal to retain the title, but it took a ridiculous amount of help. The Singh Brothers and The Great Khali had to interfere in order for Mahal to retain the WWE Championship. I thought the match was painfully boring and was glad when it was over. I can only hope that this feud is over and Mahal drops the WWE Championship at SummerSlam.

WWE Battleground started out with a great tag match and then proceeded to completely fall apart. I don’t want to see another match any time soon with flag stands, podiums, doors with timers and outer and inner-structures. The build to this show was terrible and somehow the PPV was even worse. The only positive is that WWE can now look ahead to SummerSlam next month.

WWE Battleground 2017 Preview & Predictions

WWE Battleground 2017 airs this Sunday from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It is the final WWE PPV before SummerSlam on August 20th.

    Kickoff Show:

Breezango is supposedly going to crack the case and the Superstars that have been torturing them during recent episodes of Fashion Files are going to be revealed. I honestly have zero clue who will be revealed as the attackers but I am looking forward to finding out.

    Aiden English vs Tye Dillinger

English and Dillinger faced off back in May at WWE Backlash. That match was also on the Kickoff Show. Tye Dillinger picked up the victory at Backlash and I would assume he will do the same Sunday night.

    Predicted Winner: Tye Dillinger

    Main Card:

    Baron Corbin vs Shinsuke Nakamura

Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura have been at each other’s throats for a few week’s now. Shinsuke Nakamura claimed that Corbin was afraid of him, which then caused Corbin to attack Nakamura backstage the following week.

On July 11th, Shinsuke Nakamura was scheduled to have a match with Baron Corbin. However, the match never started because Nakamura attacked Corbin before the match started.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, Nakamura teamed up with AJ Styles to take on Baron Corbin and Kevin Owens. Corbin tried to get revenge on Nakamura and attack him while he was making his entrance. Nakamura was ready for it and a brawl broke out with the four Superstars in the match. The match ended with Corbin and Kevin Owens getting the last laugh and emerging victorious.

Corbin won the Money in the Bank briefcase at last months PPV and that guarantees him a shot at the WWE Championship in the future. Shinsuke Nakamura warned AJ Styles before their match on Tuesday that he was coming for his United States Championship. Both Corbin and Nakamura have bright futures in WWE. I think Corbin will pick up the victory at Battleground, but will cheat to do so.

    Predicted Winner: Baron Corbin

    Sami Zayn vs Mike Kanellis

This feud all started when Sami Zayn interrupted Mike and Maria Kanellis having a love-fest backstage. Sami Zayn continued to accidentally interrupt the Kanellis’ romantic moments and finally Mike and Maria had enough. Maria slapped Sami in the face and Mike followed it up by smashing a glass vase over Zayn’s head on the July 11th episode of SmackDown.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, Mike Kanellis made his WWE in-ring debut against Sami Zayn. Sami controlled the entire match and had Kanellis set up for the Helluva Kick in the corner. Maria got into the ring and stood in front of the love of her life. Sami became frustrated and started yelling at the referee to get Maria out of the ring. Mike Kanellis then punched Sami in the face and planted him with a Samoan Driver for the pinfall victory.

I see things playing out in a similar fashion this Sunday at Battleground. Sami Zayn will have the match won, but outside interference from Maria Kanallis will once again cost him a victory.

    Predicted Winner: Mike Kanellis

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs New Day

The Usos defended their titles against New Day at the Money in the Bank PPV last month. It was a back and forth match, but The Usos took the cowardly out and purposefully got counted out to retain their titles. Things then got personal during a rap battle on SmackDown. The Usos referenced a private video featuring Paige and Xavier Woods being leaked during the battle.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_oNiA19qX8

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Xavier Woods picked up a victory over Jey Uso. New Day seemed to have all of the momentum heading into their rematch for the titles at WWE Battleground this Sunday.

However, The Usos responded with a big victory on this past Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown. Jimmy Uso defeated Kofi Kingston after Jey Uso provided a distraction on the ring apron. Kofi hesitated for a moment and then connected with a Crossbody off the top rope on Jimmy Uso in the ring. Jimmy Uso was able to roll through the move and wound up pinning Kofi for the victory.

This is one of those matches where I could see either team winning. Truth be told, I would be perfectly fine as either New Day or The Usos as SmackDown Tag Team Champions. I’ve enjoyed The Usos work as heels, but I think the time has come for New Day to be the champs again.

Predicted Winners & New SmackDown Tag Team Champions: New Day

Flag Match: John Cena vs Rusev

John Cena made his WWE return on the July 4th episode of SmackDown. He was in the middle of cutting a promo about America’s greatness when he was rudely interrupted by Rusev, who happened to also be making his long-awaited WWE return. Cena wound up challenging Rusev to a Flag Match that night, but Rusev declined.

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Cena teamed up with AJ Styles to face Rusev and Kevin Owens. Cena got the better of Rusev during the match and wound up pinning Kevin Owens after an Attitude Adjustment to earn a victory for his team.

During this past week’s episode of SmackDown, Cena cut an impassioned promo about Sunday’s Flag Match against Rusev. Both the American flag and the Bulgarian flag were hanging above the turnbuckles. After Cena was done with his promo, Rusev attacked him from behind. Rusev locked Cena in the Accolade and though Cena tried his best to break the hold, he ultimately was unable to do so. Rusev left Cena laying in the ring and celebrated with the Bulgarian flag on the entrance ramp.

Rusev may have captured the momentum on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, but I think Cena will be the one who emerges victorious at WWE Battleground. SummerSlam is just around the corner and I’m sure Cena will be a major factor on that PPV.

    Predicted Winner: John Cena

United States Championship Match: AJ Styles (c) vs Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens had his title of “The New Face of America” snatched away from him when AJ Styles won the United States Championship at a WWE Live Event at Madison Square Garden on July 7th.

As noted earlier, Styles and John Cena teamed up to defeat Kevin Owens and Rusev on the July 11th episode on SmackDown. Owens got some revenge on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, when he teamed up with Baron Corbin to defeat Styles and Nakamura. Owens actually pinned the United States Champion after a Pop-Up Powerbomb.

I don’t envision AJ Styles dropping the United States Championship so quickly after winning it. Styles has hinted at bring back the US Open Challenge and defending the title weekly on Tuesday nights. I’d like to see Styles retain the title and for the US Open Challenge to return starting next week on SmackDown.

Predicted Winner & Still United States Champion: AJ Styles

Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match To Determine The #1 Contender For The SmackDown Women’s Championship: Tamina vs Becky Lynch vs Charlotte vs Lana vs Natalya

This match is supposed to be every woman for themselves, but Tamina and Lana seem to have bonded over the past few weeks. Lana lost three matches to SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi in a row after debuting on the SmackDown roster. Charlotte, Becky and Natalya have all questioned whether Lana should be a part of this match and Tamina has come to her defense every time. On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Lana came down to the ring during a tag match between Charlotte & Becky Lynch versus Natalya & Tamina. Lana distracted Charlotte and Tamina used it to her advantage and booted Charlotte in the face for the victory.

On Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown, the five Superstars in this match all had argument in front of SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon. Tamina once again came to Lana’s defense and told her to shut up. Natalya then suggested to Shane McMahon that Becky Lynch and Charlotte have a match tonight. Charlotte then pissed Becky Lynch off because she claimed that it would be an uncompetitive match due to Charlotte’s previous victories over Lynch. The two started arguing and Shane McMahon made the match official. Becky Lynch wound up winning the match and the two Superstars shook hands after it was over.

Natalya, Tamina and Lana then attacked Becky and Charlotte. Tamina and Lana came down to the ring together. Natalya tried to lock Tamina in the Sharpshooter but Lana attacked her from behind. Tamina then leveled Natalya with a kick and exited the ring. SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi stated on Tuesday’s SmackDown that she will be the first person in the ring to congratulate the new #1 contender at Battleground. Carmella interrupted Naomi with the MITB briefcase and told Naomi to watch her back at Sunday’s PPV.

In my opinion, the Superstar that makes the most sense to win this match is Becky Lynch. I’m solely basing that off of the interactions Lynch has had with Carmella and James Ellsworth. I’m assuming that Carmella will cash in the briefcase before SummerSlam and then enter a feud with Becky Lynch as she will be the #1 contender. Another interesting option would be Tamina. We haven’t learned much about her on-screen character since she made her return after WWE’s Superstar Shake-Up. Her relationship with Lana is puzzling and maybe we will know more about their friendship following Battleground and the weeks heading up to SummerSlam.

Predicted Winner & #1 Contender For The SmackDown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch

WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match: Jinder Mahal (c) vs Randy Orton

The feud between Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal has been going on for months. Mahal has already defeated Orton twice, once to capture the WWE Championship and then he successfully defended it at WWE Money in the Bank. During their match at Money in the Bank, Randy Orton’s father Cowboy Bob Orton was seated in the front row. The Singh Brothers put their hands on him and it caused Orton to lose his mind in front of his hometown crowd. Mahal capitalized on Orton losing focus and retained his WWE Championship.

Orton then proceeded to hold SmackDown hostage until he was granted another rematch for the WWE Championship. Randy set up a chair in the ring and demanded that either Shane McMahon or Daniel Bryan make the match. Orton also threatened to RKO Mahal’s entire family in response to the Singh Brothers putting their hands on his father. SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon eventually caved in and granted Orton the match, but stated that Jinder Mahal got to choose the stipulation for the match. WWE Champion Jinder Mahal then came down to the entrance ramp and announced that it would be a Punjabi Prison match, in honor of his idol the Great Khali.

Mahal cut a promo on Randy Orton the following week on the July 4th episode of SmackDown. During the promo, Mahal insulted America and claimed that he had 1.3 billion people behind him in India. Mahal also stated that Americans do not like him because he looks different and sounds different. Mahal vowed to beat tolerance into those fans who disrespect him because of the color of his skin. Orton then interrupted and said that the WWE Universe doesn’t dislike him because he looks different, it is because he is a jackass.

On the July 11th episode of SmackDown, Randy Orton was away filming the upcoming WWE Studios film “Changeland”. Mahal had a match against Tye Dillinger and easily defeated him. After the match, Mahal cut another promo on Americans and Randy Orton. Mahal referred to Orton as a “snake” and scolded the fans for cheering for him. The fans responded by chanting “USA!”. Mahal claimed that the 1.3 billion people in India know that Jinder Mahal is the greatest WWE Champion of all time.

Randy Orton returned to SmackDown this Tuesday and interrupted Jinder Mahal while he was cutting a promo along with the Singh Brothers inside the Punjabi Prison structure. Orton said that Mahal had everything to lose as the 50th WWE Champion. Randy asked Mahal how he was going to feel after the 1.3 billion people in India realize that he is a disgrace after he loses the WWE Championship at Battleground. Orton then climbed to the top of the Punjabi Prison and vowed to leave Mahal’s “jacked up ass for dead in that ring” at WWE Battleground this Sunday.

This feud will likely come to an end this Sunday at the PPV. I just cannot see Randy Orton defeating Mahal in a Punjabi Prison match. I fully expect the Singh Brothers to somehow find their way into the structure and have a major impact on this match. Mahal will carry the WWE Championship until SummerSlam, I don’t see his title reign lasting any longer than that.

Predicted Winner & Still WWE Champion: Jinder Mahal

Rematch Added To WWE Battleground, Updated PPV Card

WWE just announced that Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis is official for Sunday’s WWE Battleground PPV. Sami Zayn has been an annoyance for Mike and Maria Kanellis on recent episodes of SmackDown. Sami kept accidentally interrupting Mike and Maria as they were showing affection for each other. Zayn apologized but Mike and Maria were still annoyed. Maria then went looking for Sami on the July 11th episode of SmackDown. Eventually, Sami found Mike and Maria backstage and Maria slapped him in the face. Mike Kanellis then smashed a glass vase over the back of Sami’s head.

On last night’s episode of SmackDown, Mike Kanellis made his WWE in-ring debut in a match against Sami Zayn. Sami pretty much controlled the entire match and had Kanellis set up for the Helluva Kick. Maria got into the ring and stood in front of Mike. As the referee was telling Maria to get out of the ring, Mike punched Zayn in the face and hit the Samoan Driver for the victory. Sami Zayn will now look to get his revenge Sunday night at WWE Battleground.

Here is the updated card for WWE Battleground:

    Kickoff Show

Cesaro joined the panel and again voiced his displeasure with being drafted by RAW. Cesaro was also annoyed that he wasn’t wrestling on tonight’s show.

Mick Foley and Daniel Bryan are interviewed about what the direction each of their shows take. Daniel Bryan stated that he wanted Smackdown to be focused on the wrestlers, not the General Managers. Mick Foley agreed with Daniel Bryan and said that Raw shared the same vision for their program.

Breezango defeated the Usos in a solid tag team match. The crowd was heavily behind Breezango and they received a loud ovation when they won the match.

    Main Card

Charlotte & Dana Brooke vs Sasha Banks & Bayley

The crowd went bananas when Bayley’s music hit. Sasha Banks and Bayley were posing in the ring when Charlotte and Dana Brooke had enough and attacked them. JBL stated that this was a one time opportunity for Bayley to be on the main roster, hinting that she might go back to NXT after Battleground.  This was a back and forth match throughout, with the crowd very vocal throughout. It ended with Sasha Banks submitting the Women’s Champion Charlotte with the Bank Statement in the middle of the ring. Sasha Banks and Bayley hugged in the middle of the ring after the match.

    Winners: Sasha Banks and Bayley

Reaction: It was awesome to see Bayley finally on the main roster. If she is to go back to NXT for a bit that sort of makes sense to me. It has been rumored that there will be additional rounds to the draft in the next couple of months and there is no doubt that Bayley will get picked in one of those rounds. However, it would make more sense for her to just simply join the main roster now. The only reason to keep her in NXT is to keep people tuning into the show while they build up someone to replace her on that program. As for the match itself, it was very solid. While it was a big night for Bayley, it was an even bigger night for Sasha Banks. She defeated Charlotte clean in the middle of the ring and will most likely get her shot at the Women’s Championship at Summerslam next month.

The New Day vs the Wyatt Family

Xavier Woods once again looked concerned but tagged himself in the second the match started. Brawn Strowman then immediately tagged Bray Wyatt in and Kofi tagged himself in. Xavier Woods seemed very concerned throughout the match. Every single time Bray Wyatt looked at Xavier Woods he became scared. Finally, Xavier Woods faced his fears and attacked Bray Wyatts. Woods actually went on an offensive frenzy, dominating every member of the Wyatts. However, Bray Wyatt wound up catching Xavier Woods with the Sister Abigail for the victory.

    Winners: The Wyatt Family

Reaction: This was a good match, I guess I just thought something more would come of the Xavier Woods/Bray Wyatt storyline. It will be interesting to see on Smackdown if the Wyatt Family will still exist since Strowman was drafted to Monday Night Raw.

United States Championship Match: Zack Ryder vs Rusev (c)

Zack Ryder came down to the ring with the America themed attire. His sunglasses even had the American flag design on them. The crowd responded with a brief “USA!” chant before Rusev squandered their enthusiasm by pummeling Ryder. Zack Ryder fought back and was even about to connect with the Browski Boot, but Rusev caught him. Ryder once again regained momentum and went for the Elbrow Drop but Rusev raised his knees and Ryder landed right on them. Rusev then kicked Ryder in the back of the head and subsequently locked in the Accolade for the victory. After the match, Rusev continued to attack Ryder and Mojo Rawley came out to make the save.

Winner and still United States Champion: Rusev

Reaction: It was hard to get into this match because I never believed for a second that Zack Ryder would win. It seems like Mojo and Ryder will reform the Hype Bros on Smackdown.

    Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens dominated this match early. Owens even mocked the crowd while they were chanting “Ole!”, barking back “oh that’s cute!”. Kevin Owens deliberately slowed down this match by applying a Sleeper Hold. This allowed the crowd to rally behind Zayn until he finally was able to break the hold. Zayn then hit a massive Clothesline in an effort to change the momentum in the match. Sami Zayn went for a flip from the ropes onto Owens but botched it badly and landed on his shoulder on the ring apron. Thankfully, there was no serious injury there because it looked brutal live.

For the rest of the match, Zayn was selling an arm injury and Owens took full advantage. Owens locked in a Crossface, but Zayn was able to reach the ropes to break the hold. Zayn then went for the Helluva Kick, but Kevin Owens rolled out of the ring. Sami Zayn then hit a viscous Brainbuster onto the ring apron. This was an incredible moment in the match. The referee almost counted out Owens but he rolled back into the ring at the last second. The action in this match continued with both Superstars countering move after move. Owens hit a Pop-Up Powerbomb but Zayn got his foot on the bottom rope to break up the pinfall. The crowd was electric during this match and at one point brought back the “Fight Forever!” chant that was heard during Zayn and Nakamura’s match in NXT. The match ended with Sami Zayn hitting two Helluva Kicks in a row and finally pinning Kevin Owens.

    Winner: Sami Zayn

Reaction: I knew this match would be excellent before it even started and it still exceeded my expectations. The build to this match was essentially just Zayn and Owens punching each other in the face every week and it didn’t need to be anything more than that. What a terrific performance by these two Superstars and it will be nearly impossible to top that match on tonight’s show.

    Natalya vs Becky Lynch

Tough spot for Lynch and Natalya following the Owens and Zayn match. Natalya dominated most of this match and even locked the Sharpshooter in on Lynch in the middle of the ring. The crowd started to come back to life when Becky was able to reach the bottom rope and break the hold. Natalya kicked Becky Lynch in her injured leg and once again locked in the Sharpshooter. This time Becky Lynch had no choice but to tap out.

    Winner via Submission: Natalya

Reaction: The crowd was drained from the Owens and Zayn match but this was actually a better match than they were giving it credit for. The problem with this match is that the WWE is having a hell of a time getting anybody invested in this feud. I’m hoping this match marked the end of it and both Natalya and Lynch can move onto something different.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Darren Young vs The Miz (c)

Bob Backlund was constantly climbing up the steel stairs to offer advice to Darren Young during the match. The ending of this match was bizarre to say the least. Maryse slapped Bob Backlund and then fell down I guess to pretend that Backlund pushed her? I honestly have no idea what she was doing. The Miz then exited the ring and pushed Bob Backlund down. Backlund got up and ripped his shirt in half and went after the Miz. The Miz once again pushed him down, which then led to Darren Young going insane and attacking the Miz outside the ring. The referee then called for the bell and the Miz wins via DQ.

Winner and Still Intercontinental Champion: The Miz

Reaction: I found this match entertaining until the awful ending. Darren Young and Miz were drafted to separate shows, so was that the end of the feud? If so, that wasn’t a good way to end it.

John Cena, Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs AJ Styles & The Club

Enzo Amore cut another great promo before the match started. AJ Styles was greeted with a very loud “soccer mom!” chant from the crowd once the match started.

Much like every single match Cena is involved in, there were dueling “Let’s go Cena!” and “Cena sucks!” chants even when he wasn’t in the ring. Also, much like every match Enzo is in, he was dominated by everyone and spent most of the match desperately trying to get a tag. Enzo was finally able to tag in John Cena and he instantly began brawling with Styles. AJ Styles went to hit the Phenomenal Forearm on Cena but he ducked and wound up hitting Gallows. Styles was able to hit the Styles Clash on Cena but Big Cass broke up the pinfall. Gallows and Anderson then hit the Magic Killer on Big Cass. It came down to Cena and Styles in the ring. Cena hit a massive Attitude Adjustment on AJ Styles from the second rope for the pinfall victory.

Winners: John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass

Reaction: John Cena gets his revenge on AJ Styles for last month’s loss to him at Money in the Bank. I find it interesting that Cena pinned Styles clean, even though Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan drafted Styles ahead of Cena. Granted, it was a six man tag-team match but it still felt odd to me. If Cena and Styles do face off one more time at Summerslam, it would make sense for AJ Styles to get the victory. The match itself tonight was good. I expected either Enzo, Anderson or Gallows to take the pinfall so I’m interested to see if anything comes of this Tuesday night on Smackdown.

Highlight Reel: Chris Jericho Interviews Randy Orton

Randy Orton thanked the crowd for welcoming him back. Chris Jericho immediately started talking about himself and the crowd started chanted “RKO!”. Chris Jericho gave Randy Orton a present that will help him defeat Brock Lesnar at Summerslam. Jericho gave Randy Orton the gift of Jericho and Orton responded by saying that Jericho’s haircut made him look like Ellen Degeneres. Jericho then insinuates that Orton is scared of Brock Lesnar. Orton then claimed he wants to face Lesnar to make a statement. Orton then stated that it only takes one RKO to get to “Viperville” and that there is no enhancement needed, which was a clear jab at Lesnar failing multiple drug tests leading up to his UFC return at UFC 200. Jericho then fell victim to an RKO out of nowhere.

Reaction: Orton seems to be returning as a good guy and got a great reaction from the crowd. I found it pretty amusing that Orton took a jab at Lesnar failing a drug test when Orton has also failed a drug test in the past and was suspended for it.

WWE Championship Match: Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose

Even though Foley and Daniel Bryan said that they wanted to make each of their shows about the Superstars earlier this evening, they both were ringside for this match. Stephanie and Shane McMahon were also ringside as well. Roman Reigns came out to a chorus of boos and it was 10:55 PM before the match even started. As soon as the bell rang, a very audible “Roman sucks!” chant rained down upon the ring. Ambrose and Reigns took turns beating down Rollins in the beginning, but Ambrose quickly went for a roll-up on Reigns while he wasn’t paying attention. Reigns then tried the same on Ambrose when he was distracted with Seth Rollins. The action then spilled outside the ring with everyone getting in offense. Reigns beatdown Rollins, Ambrose leaped onto Reigns from the top rope and then Rollins responded with a knee to Ambrose’s face. Eventually, the three Superstars worked their way back into the ring and continued to beat the hell out of each other. Reigns began to dominate both Ambrose and Rollins. Reigns hit a Superman Punch on both Ambrose and Rollins. Ambrose squashed Reigns’ momentum with a viscous Clothesline. Rollins and Ambrose then became friends again for a split second and beatdown Reigns. Both Rollins and Ambrose dove outside the ring onto Reigns. Ambrose and Rollins then Powerbombed Roman Reigns through the Spanish announce table. Rollins then hit both Ambrose and Reigns with a steel chair. Rollins and Ambrose then battled in the ring for a bit until Roman Reigns made his return and Powerbombed them both. Seth Rollins then hit the Pedigree on Reigns but he kicked out at two. Reigns hit the Superman Punch on Rollins and followed it up with a Spear. Ambrose got back into the ring and hit the Dirty Deeds on Reigns for the victory. The entire Smackdown Live roster then came out and celebrated with Dean Ambrose.

Winner and Still WWE Champion: Dean Ambrose

Reaction: This was a great main event and the right person won. Smackdown Live needs the WWE Championship and Dean Ambrose ensured that they still got it. The only issue I had with this match was that the GM’s and Commissioners for both shows were ringside. It was just an unnecessary distraction to an otherwise great match.

  • The Undertaker Returns At Battleground, Takes Out Brock Lesnar

As expected, The Undertaker made his WWE return at the WWE Battleground pay-per-view in St. Louis on Sunday night.

“The Dead Man” made his surprise return during the main event, just as challenger Brock Lesnar was attempting to pin champion Seth Rollins following an F-5.

Below is a recap of what transpired, courtesy of our WWE Battleground play-by-play:

Lesnar hits an F-5 on Rollins and covers him, however The Undertaker’s gong hits. The lights go out. When they come back on, Undertaker is standing in the ring staring at Lesnar.

Undertaker and Lesnar go at it until Undertaker finally hits a Tombstone piledriver. We see Heyman watching on in horror. Taker drops down to one knee and does his famous pose as his music plays and the lights go out again. Taker leaves and heads to the back, stopping to raise his fist as the crowd pops. WWE Battleground goes off the air on that note.

It’s been rumored for quite some time, but now it looks like the Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar rematch is set for SummerSlam.

  • Ryback Injured, Unable To Defend Intercontinental Championship At WWE Battleground

WWE has announced that Ryback suffered an injury on Raw that will prevent him from defending the Intercontinental Championship this Sunday at Battleground. He was scheduled to defend the title in a Triple Threat Match against Big Show and The Miz.

“Earlier this week on Raw, Intercontinental Champion Ryback sustained an injury that will prevent him from competing and defending his title this weekend at WWE Battleground.

“Stay with WWE.com for additional details on Ryback’s condition.”

Alongside Randy Orton, Ryback faced Big Show and Sheamus in a tag team match, which he was able to finish.

  • Chris Jericho Suffers Neck Injury In Japan, Rumored WWE Battleground Matches

    – Chris Jericho suffered a neck injury during his match in Japan with Neville this past weekend. The injury happened when Jericho caught Neville on a dive spot. Originally, the injury was believed to be a serious one, however he has reportedly recovered from it already and is under the belief that it will be completely gone in a few days.

    – In addition to the announced matches for this month’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view, Randy Orton vs. Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler vs. Rusev and Nikki Bella vs. Paige are expected. While Bella-Paige isn’t official yet, we can confirm that it was on the books for the event as recent as a week ago. In the case of Ziggler and Rusev, WWE is doing an angle where Ziggler is “out indefinitely,” so they might hold off on that match.

  • WWE Raw Reaction (7/21/2014): Highlights, Lowlights & Random Thoughts

Tonight’s episode of Raw took place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida and featured a total of nine matches. Rapper Flo Rida made an appearance and performed in front of his hometown fans while the Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar made his return to hype the upcoming program between him and John Cena at SummerSlam.

Roman Reigns took on Kane and Randy Orton in a Handicap match Bray Wyatt took over the Highlight Reel. Stephanie McMahon got arrested and the Miz took on Dolph Ziggler just one day after winning the Intercontinental Championship.

A lot, and I mean a lot, happened on tonight’s show so without further ado, here are my overall highs, lows and random thoughts on the 7/21/2014 edition of Monday Night Raw:

BEST MATCH: Dean Ambrose vs. Cesaro was the Best Match of the night. I didn’t necessarily enjoy the finish, but I understand why it was done. Ambrose has been booked as a lunatic who doesn’t care about wins or losses and wants to inflict pain and justice upon his opponents. There were some good spots and both men worked hard to put on a good performance. A close second place for match of the night was the Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler. The crowd seemed to be more into Miz vs. Ziggler, but from a wrestling standpoint, Ambrose vs. Cesaro deserves the award.

WORST MATCH: Nikki Bella vs. Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes, Cameron and Eva Marie was the Worst Match of the night. Thanks to Brie Bella and Stephanie McMahon, the overall segment was surprisingly good, but the bout lasted about a minute and looked like a 4-on-1 mauling. I’m actually stoked to see what happens between Stephanie and Brie. Do you guys really think that they’ll have a match at SummerSlam? Let me know in the comments section.

UPSET OF THE NIGHT: Zack Ryder defeating Fandango was the Upset of the Night. Granted, it wasn’t a clean victory, but when Ryder pinned Fandango, Michael Cole and JBL went crazy and were in disbelief – that’s how big of a moment it was. Dolph Ziggler defeating the Miz was the runner-up for the award, but come on; we gotta give it to the Long Island Iced Z!

MOST SHOCKING MOMENT: Although it was expected, Brock Lesnar returning to Raw was the Most Shocking Moment of the night. Triple H shaking Paul Heyman’s hand and then exchanging pleasantries with Brock Lesnar was an interesting and unexpected moment. However, the Game needed Heyman’s plan C and appears to be pleased with the main event of SummerSlam. Stephanie McMahon being arrested was another shocking moment, but you can read more on that in the “Final/Random Thoughts” section of the article.

  • WWE Battleground: Absolute Rubbish

WWE held its annual Battleground pay-per-view last night. It was the second incarnation of the event and featured a total of six matches on the actual card and two additional matches on the pre-show.

On paper, the event looked more than solid and seemed like it would be one of the best shows of the year. Things quickly took a turn for the worse, however, and the WWE dropped a massive turd on its fans last night. The event was clearly slopped together and featured some of the laziest storytelling fans will ever encounter.

Lana and Rusev received some serious heat last night after referencing the recent Malaysia Airlines crash. It will be interesting to see if the WWE takes a step back after receiving criticism from multiple news outlets.
Lana and Rusev received some serious heat last night after referencing the recent Malaysia Airlines crash. It will be interesting to see if the WWE takes a step back after receiving criticism from multiple news outlets.

The company also pulled a total bait and switch on fans that paid to see the event. The most anticipated match of the night for many was Seth Rollins squaring off with former Shield partner Dean Ambrose. Prior to the event, the match had been heavily advertised and was clearly one of the main reasons fans were tuning in.

Instead of holding the match, however, Triple H cancelled the contest and threw Dean Ambrose out of the building, eventually awarding the victory to Seth Rollins due to forfeit. Fans were expecting an absolute classic of a matchup, but instead were treated to a few backstage brawl segments that were nothing special, and amounted to the same thing fans can see for free each week on Raw.

Last night, the WWE basically told the fans that this matchup was too good to take place at a crummy pay-per-view such as Battleground and will be saved for SummerSlam. Honestly, fans should feel cheated after what they saw with the Ambrose/Rollins program last night.

  • WWE Battleground 2014 Reaction: Highlights, Lowlights & Random Thoughts

WWE’s seconds annual Battleground PPV took place in Tampa, Florida and featured a total of eight matches (including the pre-show). The main event pitted the WWE World Heavyweight champion John Cena in a Fatal Four Way match against Kane, Randy Orton and crowd-favorite Roman Reigns.

Also highlighting the card was the personal battle between Mr. Money in the Bank Seth Rollins and his former Shield brethren Dean Ambrose. Due to Bad News Barrett’s injury, the WWE Universe also witnessed a 20-Man Battle Royal that crowned a new Intercontinental champion.

Although Battleground may have been a predictable PPV, there were still two outstanding matches worth admission. So without further ado, here are my overall highs, lows and random thoughts on WWE Battleground 2014:

BEST MATCH: It was a toss-up, but the best match of the night was the first of the night, which was the Usos (c) vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan for the WWE Tag Team Titles. These two teams competed in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match and stole the show with countless false finishes and good old fashioned, energetic hard work. All four competitors in the match shined…including Erick Rowan. The second best match of the night was the main event Fatal Four Way WWE World Heavyweight Championship war that took place between John Cena (c), Kane, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns. I feel that the crowd could have been into the bout more and made a bit more noise, but overall it was a very solid main event despite many people frowning upon John Cena retaining the title.

    Usos2

WORST MATCH: Fandango vs. Adam Rose was the worst match of the night and thankfully, it took place on the pre-show. I thought that the pre-show was supposed to convince and hype the WWE Universe into buying/subscribing to the PPV? These two have absolutely no steam and I thought that this was a good moment for them to prove their worth and put forth a good performance. Unfortunately, they weren’t given very much time and Adam Rose is still failing to get over with the crowd.

UPSET OF THE NIGHT: Without a doubt, Chris Jericho defeating Bray Wyatt was the Upset of the Night.Y2J and Bray had a good, hard-hitting match, but it featured a few mistakes and awkward moments. Without those botches, it could have been an instant classic. Anyways, some may not view Jericho defeating Bray as an upset, but considering Y2J has been out of action for a while, and the fact that Bray has looked strong ever since his debut, I consider it to be an upset. Hopefully the Jericho win leads to another match between these two at SummerSlam. If so, I guarantee both men will put forth a smoother performance and overall better match.

MOST SHOCKING MOMENT: There was no Brock Lesnar or hardcore surprises at Battleground, however, the Miz winning the Intercontinental Championship, and the way he did it, was absolutely perfect and was an overall shocking moment. It appeared that Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler were the only two superstars left in the Battle Royal, but about five minutes before Ziggler eliminated Sheamus, Michael Cole referenced the fact that the Miz was thrown under the tope rope and wasn’t officially eliminated from the match. When Ziggler eliminated Sheamus, the crowd popped and Ziggler thought he had won. Unfortunately for Ziggler and his fans, the Miz slithered back into the ring and threw a distracted Ziggler over the top rope, shocking the WWE Universe and winning the Intercontinental Championship.

  • WWE Battleground 2014 Preview and Predictions

The top superstars in the WWE will compete at this Sunday’s Battleground pay-per-view. Headlining the event is a fatal four-way matchup for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

In all, there are eight matches scheduled for the event, and nearly all of the company’s titles will be up for grabs. Here are my predictions for Sunday’s Battleground.

    Cameron vs. Naomi (Pre-Show Match)

    20140714_Battleground-kickoff_namoicam_LIGHT_C-home

These two have been at each other’s throats since the breakup of the Funkadactyls. Cameron has become increasingly problematic for Naomi, as she continues to rack up wins and have success in the Divas division. I think Naomi will finally put the Funkadactyls by hitting the Rear View for the win.

    Winner: Naomi by pinfall

    Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal

    20140715_Battleground_IntercontinentalUpdate_LIGHT_HP_2

This should be one of the most exciting matches of the night, as a number of viable contenders will be battling to become the new Intercontinental Champion. Bad News Barrett will also be on hand to present the title to the new champ.

It would appear that only a few of the entrants have a legitimate chance at winning the title, including Sheamus, Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler and Bo Dallas. I think it comes down to Dallas and Cesaro at the end, with Cesaro ultimately coming out on top. An attack or provocation by Barrett could also turn Cesaro face once again and start a feud, as it appears his days as a Heyman guy are nearly over.

    Winner: Cesaro

The Usos (Tag Team Champions) vs. The Wyatt Family (2-Out-Of-3 Falls Match)

    20140714_Battleground_UsosWyatts_LIGHT_HOMEPAGE

These two teams have been battling one another for what seems like forever at this point. I think this is the point where the Wyatt Family finally breaks through and strikes gold. The teams will split the first two falls before the Wyatt Family becomes the new Tag Team Champions after Luke Harper hits a clothesline to win the third fall.

    Winner: Wyatt Family by pinfall

AJ Lee (Divas Champion) vs. Paige

    20140715_Battleground_AjPaige_LIGHT_HP

I’m not really sure what the plan is with this one. It appeared that they were trying hard for a double turn on the night of AJ Lee’s return, but the crowd wasn’t really having it. The two have now developed into so-called “frenemies.”

This should be a close matchup that will hopefully receive at least five to ten minutes. AJ Lee will struggle throughout, but will ultimately come out on top after locking in the Black Widow and forcing Paige to tap out. Don’t be surprised if Paige attacks AJ after the match in an attempt to turn her heel.

    Winner: AJ Lee by submission

  • WWE Battleground: Most Likely Outcomes for Intercontinental Champion

On Sunday July 20th, WWE will hold a 20 man over the top rope battle royal to crown a new Intercontinental Champion. Bad News Barrett was on track for the best run of his career until an injury forced him to vacate the title. Now, WWE’s entire mid card will compete and a new champion will emerge.

But who has the best chance of winning? What is the most likely outcome for the battle royal at WWE Battleground?

There are a number of jobbers we can immediately assume won’t win. Those jobbers include Diego, Sin Cara, Titus O’Neil, Zack Ryder, Heath Slater, R-Truth, Xavier Woods, Fandango, RybAxel and the Great Khali. Although they have a slight chance, it would be extremely surprising to see Rob Van Dam, Alberto Del Rio, Big E or Kofi Kingston become the new Intercontinental Champion.

Dolph Ziggler is an interesting choice who has been winning more often lately. However, those matches have been mainly against Fandango and the focus has been on Summer Rae and Layla. Sorry Ziggler, but chances are you won’t win either.

The remaining four superstars all have a legitimate chance at becoming the new Intercontinental Champion at Battleground and here is why.

    sheamusmiz

The Miz made his return from filming WWE Studios’ The Marine 4 on the June 30th edition of Raw. There has been a great deal of hype given to the Miz’s new multi-platform, Money Maker faced character since his return. Although at first Miz was booked as weak with the surprise return of Chris Jericho on the same night, the most must see WWE superstar of all time recently defeated United States Champion and fellow battle royal participant Sheamus on Raw. Having Miz win the Intercontinental Championship yet again would certainly align with his new character push, but there are others who could do more with the title.

Bo Dallas has been impressive since redebuting on the main roster. When Dallas first arrived on the main roster for the 2013 Royal Rumble, he didn’t have a character. He was a weird smiled guy with long hair. Dallas made huge strides in NXT in developing his unBOlieveable gimmick. After seeing it be so successful in NXT, I had concern over whether it would work as well on the main roster. Dallas has a ton of BOlievers and has a good chance of winning the Intercontinental title if WWE feels he is ready.
    WWE_2K14_Antonio_Cesaro
Someone who is definitely ready for a championship is the newest Paul Heyman guy in the Swiss Superman Cesaro. The King of Swing’s stock has been flying through the roof since he joined forces with Heyman one night after winning the inaugural Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. However, other than winning meaningless mid card matches against the likes of Kofi Kingston and Rob Van Dam, Cesaro hasn’t reached any new heights. Winning the Intercontinental title would be another step in the right direction for Cesaro.

That leaves the current United States Champion Sheamus. The Celtic Warrior is a very intriguing pick since he already holds a mid card title. While Sheamus is not an up and coming star like Dallas or Cesaro, WWE may have been hinting at a possible unification happening at WWE Battleground. Michael Cole referenced the idea on Raw recently. If Sheamus does win the battle royal, he will unify the Intercontinental and United States titles. WWE fans have spent a great deal of time and effort complaining (as they normally do) about the terrible booking mid card titles have had over the last few years. There really is no need for two mid card titles.

    ME_094_Photo_20

If you think about it, WWE recently unified the two world titles. Shortly thereafter, WWE began the discussion on whether or not the United States and Intercontinental Championships would be unified as well.

While I think Dallas or Cesaro would benefit most from winning the Intercontinental Championship, Sheamus winning would benefit the entire WWE Universe.

Who do you think is the most likely winner of the battle royal at WWE Battleground to crown a new Intercontinental Champion? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

  • Vince McMahon’s Reaction To Battleground Power Outage & His WMXXX Concerns

-Apparently Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn “flipped their lids” when the power outage happened at the recent WWE Battleground pay-per-view in Buffalo. McMahon is reportedly paranoid that something similar, or worse, could happen at WrestleMania XXX next year, as the event will be held in the same venue that the NFL’s Super Bowl was in when they had the same problem. McMahon’s concern is that not only are they going to be in the same building, but that WrestleMania uses more power than the Super Bowl when you factor in all of the lighting, pyro and other production elements.

-According to several key employees in WWE, the feeling is former football player-turned wrestler Mojo Rawley is the breakout performer with the most potential in the current crop of talent working in the WWE NXT developmental system.

  • News On Chaos Backstage At Battleground, Employees Gambling On PPV Finishes

-The scene backstage at the recent WWE Battleground pay-per-view was said to be a chaotic one, as the script for the show was finalized on the Friday before the event, but the WWE creative team weren’t told the finishes of the matches until approximately two hours before the show began. This would explain the drastic swings in the betting odds for the show, as the belief is people in WWE call or text friends or family to place bets for them as soon as they become aware of the final creative plans. Obviously, the WWE employees themselves won’t place their own bets for fear that they will be traced back to them.

  • Jim Ross Q&A: HBK Wrestling Again, Battleground Disappointment, Christian-HOF

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated the Q&A section of his JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

    Will Shawn Michaels Wrestle Again?

“It’s the annual ‘HBK to return for one more match’ rumor that generally pops up concerning WrestleMania. I don’t feel that there is any thing to it. Shawn has been adamant that he’s done as a wrestler and I believe him. He’s got nothing left to prove and is staying busy with his Outdoor Network show among other projects.”

Should WWE Have Held A Dark Match Main Event After Battleground?:

“I’m not a big fan of having dark matches after a PPV. Sorry that you did not enjoy your experience. I did not like the ending either.”

Would He Do A 1-Shot Appearance For TNA?

“Not likely. I’m moving on from TV wrestling. I hope TNA does well nonetheless.”

Is Christian A Hall of Famer?

“If I had a vote, he would get mine. Other than that I don’t know. Hope so. Great talent in and out of the ring.”

The REAL Story Behind JOHN CENA’s Shocking Return & AJ Lee’s Being Sent Home From RAW

  • Update Vince McMahon’s Upcoming WWE TV Return & Big Show’s Storyline

According to one source, the reason for the sudden storyline change in attitude and confidence in Big Show this week on RAW is likely because of Vince McMahon’s rumored return to television, which is expected in the near future.

The storyline surrounding Big Show lately has seen him say “how high” when Triple H and/or Stephanie McMahon say “jump,” until he was fed up with their abuse and defied their orders with his actions in the main event at WWE Battleground on Sunday. This led to his overly confident attitude when being dressed down by Stephanie McMahon in the opening segment of RAW on Monday.

Apparently the reason for that is Vince McMahon, who is scheduled to return to television earlier than originally planned due to recent extreme dips in television ratings and other business projections, will come back as a babyface that will defend Big Show. This would allow Big Show to be confident, as we saw on Monday, despite the fact that his superiors, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, are threatening his job.

  • Backstage Reason WWE Is Stacking The Deck For The Hell In A Cell PPV

The reason WWE is stacking the deck so heavily at the upcoming WWE Hell In A Cell pay-per-view is due to reported concerns that they may have alienated their pay-per-view buying audience with the way they have handled the main event situation on the past couple of pay-per-views.

As noted previously, fans demanded refunds following the recent WWE Night Of Champions pay-per-view due to the fact that they paid for a finish that was completely erased and overturned less than 24 hours later on the free WWE RAW television show that followed the next night. Additionally, fans were loudly chanting “refund, refund” after the non-finish to Sunday’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view in Buffalo.

Due to the fact that WWE has handled the main events, which are what pay-per-views are largely sold on, so poorly at their last few shows, the feeling in the company is they need to regain that trust with their pay-per-view buying audience at Hell In A Cell, which is why there seems to be such emphasis on guaranteeing a legitimate finish in the main event, as well as other major selling points to support it underneath. Basically, the company is stacking the deck so heavily that it pretty much guarantees that anyone who buys the show this time will get their money’s worth.

For those reasons, WWE has brought back John Cena earlier than expected for a match against Alberto Del Rio, as well as guaranteed a new WWE Champion in the third-straight pay-per-view main event between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan. While they basically guaranteed a winner for the same match at Battleground, they are stressing that this match will be in a Hell In A Cell, which assures viewers that there will be no outside interference, and they have Shawn Michaels as a special guest referee to give further confidence to their fans that there will be a legitimate outcome this time around.

  • Mick Foley Blogs On Goldust’s WWE Comeback, Says He Has One More Run Left

The following is a new blog written by Mick Foley on Goldust’s recent WWE comeback:

“Just yesterday, I posted on Facebook about my 10 year old son’s prediction that the Goldust/Cody vs Shield match was going to steal the show at Battleground. He even prefaced it by saying “I know Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton are going to have a great match, but…”.

Last night, Goldust proved to me that his match with Randy Orton was much more than just a flirtation with greatness. As a guy who knows a little something about making comebacks, I thought, following that amazing effort against Randy Orton that Goldust may have had just enough passion and commitment to have that last great match of his career. But last night’s match at Battleground proved to me that Goldust has something even more important than the passion and commitment needed to have that one last great match. What he has is gas in the tank!

As much as i loved the match with Orton, Dustin seemed to be running on fumes those last few minutes. He clearly had worked himself into the best physical condition I’d seen him in for many years, but being in “gym shape” and “ring shape” are two entirely different animals. But what a joyride the Rhodes family took us on last night! From that pre-match promo that had proud Poppa Dusty unable to contain his composure, to the crisp execution of every move, to the finish that had the Foley family literally jumping for joy in the living room, (I didn’t get much air, but I DID momentarily leave my feet) the victory over The Shield reminded me of everything I love about wrestling. It was an emotional roller-coaster ride of epic proportions!

With the Orton match and last night’s triumph to his credit, Goldust has proven to me that he has what it takes for one more run in WWE.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: The Finish To Orton vs. Bryan, Rhodes Family vs. The Shield

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts on last night’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about

The Main Event Finish: Controversy abounds following the WWE PPV Battle Ground Sunday night in Buffalo. Many fans hitting me on Twitter @JRsBBQ with ample venom regarding the finish of the show. Obviously, it was a way to continue a storyline between Bryan and Orton. Pro wrestling creative is more subjective today that ever in my lifetime. Like most theatrical productions that I watch, I enjoyed some aspects of the PPV and wasn’t as enthralled with some of the other content.

The Rhodes Family vs. The Shield The payoff on the personal issue involving the Rhodes clan and the Shield, representing the establishment, was spot on in my view. The spotlight was on Cody Rhodes as it should have been. Now, let’s see where it goes from here and if Cody evolves into the main event level superstar that many feel he is capable of doing.

Loved the post match nuance of the stars, both old and new, congratulating the Rhodes family. Plus, I got the one, Bionic Elbow that I was hoping for from the Dream. There is no doubt that Goldust can still contribute in today’s WWE at least for the short term IE through WM30.
