Maria Menounos to Induct Bob Backlund into WWE Hall of Fame

WWE sent out the following announcement today:

Maria Menounos to Induct Bob Backlund into WWE® Hall of Fame

WWE (NYSE:WWE) announced today that Extra Host Maria Menounos will induct Bob Backlund into the WWE Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, April 6, 2013 as part of WrestleMania® Week.

Maria Menounos competed at WrestleMania 28 in Miami, FL on April 1, 2012. She will induct Bob Backlund into the WWE Hall Of Fame Class of 2013 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, April 6, 2013. (Photo: Business Wire)

Menounos has made multiple appearances on WWE programming dating back to 2009 when she made her in-ring debut and co-hosted Monday Night Raw with Nancy O’Dell. In 2011, Menounos appeared at WWE Tribute to the Troops where she teamed with Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly and Alicia Fox to defeat the team of The Bella Twins and WWE Divas Natalya and Beth Phoenix. Menounos continued her feud after Phoenix and Eve Torres interrupted an interview segment with Kelly Kelly on Extra. This led to a tag team match at WrestleMania 28 where she teamed with Kelly Kelly to defeat Torres and Phoenix.

Menounos, a lifelong WWE fan, idolized Backlund while growing up and met him through partner Keven Undergaro, who as Head Writer of MTV’s Singled Out, cast Backlund to guest star alongside Jenny McCarthy and Chris Hardwick. Menounos then worked with Backlund on the comedy feature, In the Land of Merry Misfits, and the two have been close ever since. Backlund was present at Menounos Miss Massachusetts USA competition and ran alongside her at the Nike Celebrity Road Race.

“It is an honor to induct my good friend Bob Backlund into the WWE Hall of Fame,” said Maria Menounos. “Watching him carry the title for a since unmatched five years and then stage such an incredible comeback with a reinvented persona puts him in a class all his own. Add in his incredible work ethic and high moral caliber, and you have everything that defines the word champion. And astonishingly, he can still wrestle with guys a third his age! He’s my hero and my friend. I can’t wait for the ceremony on April 6.”

“I am truly humbled to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame,” said Bob Backlund. “Maria has been a friend for years and I can’t think of someone I would rather have induct me at Madison Square Garden.”

A one-hour Hall of Fame special will air on Tuesday, April 9 at 10:00 p.m. ET on USA Network. WrestleMania 29 airs live on pay-per-view Sunday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

Hulk Hogan Says He Wants To Induct Randy Savage Into The WWE Hall of Fame

In a newly published interview with Fighting Spirit Magazine, TNA Wrestling Superstar Hulk Hogan discussed his strained relationship with the late “Macho Man” Randy Savage and desire to induct the legendary wrestler into the WWE Hall of Fame.

“I’ve heard all these urban legends about Randy doing something to piss Vince off,” said Hogan. “I’ve heard two or three different stories, and I don’t know if any of those are true, but he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and I would love to be the one that inducts him. I’ve got a speech for him ready to go. I just think it’s a must that he’s in the Hall of Fame; he was so influential in this business, especially in the WWF, and in my career.

“You know, he’s the only guy we could pass the belt to, and we wouldn’t lose money. You gave the belt to The Ultimate Warrior – I don’t want to drop a bunch of names – and right away the revenue went down. Give the belt to ‘Macho Man’, and things would stay the same, or get better.”

“For me, it would be cool to induct him. We had a rift for about 10 years, and then right before he passed away, I was getting an EKG, when I hear (mimicking Randy’s voice) ‘Yeah, what’s up, brother?’ And I looked over, and he was there, looking great. I said, ‘Hey Mach, how you doing?’ I shook his hand, and introduced him to my wife, Jennifer. He’s like, ‘Hello lovely lady, how ya doing?’ Jennifer said to him, ‘Oh, Mr. Macho, I’ve heard so much about you. You know, we’ve got three or four lawyers at the house today, so we’re gonna cook up. We’d love to have you over.’ But he just went, ‘I don’t dig lawyers, baby, maybe we could start out with a phone call?’

“I was on a show with Lanny (Poffo, Randy’s brother), Scott Steiner and Kevin Nash in Canada [around the time of Randy’s passing], and Lanny had told me that his mom was depressed because his dad had passed away, and would me and Randy come to see her? We were gonna have a barbecue at Randy’s house for his mom, and surprise her. But midweek, Randy passed away. It was tough because we just started talking after all that bullshit; I was excited to talk to him, he was excited to talk to me, and then he passed away. It was [expletive] up. He was a great human being, too. He had a good heart, man. He was a good person.”

Jim Ross Blogs About Cena vs. Punk, Trump In WWE’s HOF, Physical HOF Building

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Donald Trump’s WWE Hall of Fame Induction & A Physical HOF Building:

“Still amazes me that many seemingly sane people can’t differentiate from being inducted into the WWE HOF as a wrestler, etc over the honorary, celeb status. I have written about this in the past and am getting tired of responding to many knuckleheads on Twitter @JRsBBQ on the topic.”

“I will say that WWE definitely NEEDS a building to house the HOF combined with a WWE Museum and I feel that will happen in the future. So much goes into a facility such as this as it is a MAJOR undertaking as one can imagine. The location is vital, an adequate building is a must, the right staff and curator can influence success or failure, acquiring items for display are crucial and these are just some of the issues. I would bet my last black hat that it happens sooner than later but only when all the moving parts have been addressed. Until then many will continue to bitch about who’s in the WWE HOF and why their favorite isn’t….and so it goes.”

John Cena vs. CM Punk on RAW: “Two points on this tremendous, main event, 1. Cena added some new wrinkles to his game that might silence some of his narrow minded critics for a few days and 2. Punk was working with the flu and hampered by jet lag from a long flight to Dallas from Istanbul on the last day of a grueling, three day international tour. I watched the match live on TV and it is the first match in a long time that I’ve gone back and watched again on DVR.”

Bruno Sammartino Entering The WWE Hall Of Fame

Hell has frozen over. ESPN.com broke the story and now WWE.com has confirmed it – Bruno Sammartino has agreed to join the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013. The following is WWE’s official announcement on the matter, including quotes from Triple H and Bruno Sammartino:

At long last, Bruno Sammartino will come home to Madison Square Garden on the night before WrestleMania 29 to take his rightful place as a WWE Hall of Famer. (

The longest-reigning WWE Champion of all time was announced Monday as the fourth inductee for the Hall’s star-studded 2013 class. Sammartino will join fellow former WWE Champions Mick Foley and Bob Backlund and former Women’s Champion Trish Stratus in sports-entertainment’s most hallowed hall on April 6, 2013. But for all the greats who have been and will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, only Bruno lays claim to being the one true “Living Legend.”

Sammartino’s induction has long been anticipated by a generation of WWE fans who grew up idolizing the Italian strongman. In an exclusive interview, Bruno revealed to WWE.com why he felt 2013 was the right time to finally enter the WWE Hall of Fame.

“Triple H contacted me and started telling me all the things that had changed and everything that was going on with WWE,” Bruno said. “I started watching it after talking to him and when I saw it, I was very, very impressed.”

For Triple H, the hall was incomplete without The Living Legend.

“I love the history of this business,” Triple H said. “Without the history, there is no tomorrow. To look back on the history of WWE, one of the most important figures in the long story of where this all came from wasn’t recognized. And that was Bruno.”

Born in a small mountain town in Italy, Sammartino immigrated to Pittsburgh at age 15. After breaking world weightlifting records as a teenager, Sammartino was noticed by Vincent J. McMahon, who encouraged the impressive athlete to pursue a career in professional wrestling. He became an overnight sensation and on May 17, 1963, defeated “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in the old Madison Square Garden to become the second WWE Champion in history. Sammartino held the title for nearly eight years, by far the longest reign of all time — not just in WWE, but with regards to any sports-entertainment organization.

Bruno Sammartino became a household name throughout the 1960s and ’70s by turning back rivals including Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon and George “The Animal” Steele. In early 1968, he headlined the first-ever wrestling event at the new and current Madison Square Garden. In all, Bruno sold out the building on an astounding 187 occasions and is partially responsible for it becoming The World’s Most Famous Arena. It was there on Dec. 10, 1973, that Sammartino became the first-ever two-time WWE Champion and he held the title for an additional three-and-a-half years. On Aug. 9, 1980, Bruno main-evented an epic event in front of more than 35,000 people at New York City’s Shea Stadium that broke box-office records.

“Arguably the biggest name ever in the history of the business is Bruno Sammartino,” Triple H said.

For many longtime fans, the WWE Hall of Fame was simply not complete until the beloved Bruno Sammartino was inducted. Now it will happen at the building where he achieved his finest moments. Tickets for the Induction Ceremony are on sale now and available at the MSG box office, online at Ticketmaster.com and various Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Ticket prices range from $50 to $150.

Trish Stratus To Be Inducted Into The WWE Hall Of Fame

With Mick Foley and Bob Backlund the first two confirmed names for the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013 – another name that appears to be locked in is former Divas champion Trish Stratus.

WWE reached out to Trish Stratus late last week about the induction and word is that she accepted.

Other members rumored for this year’s Hall of Fame Ceremony from Madison Square Garden include DX, Kamala and Bruno Sammartino.

WrestleMania 29 Main Event, Update On Bruno Sammartino In The WWE Hall Of Fame & More

– Following Sunday’s Royal Rumble, the stage is set for The Rock to defend the WWE Championship against John Cena at WrestleMania in a rematch of their “Once in a Lifetime” match from last year. This has been the scheduled main event for several months. It’s likely that we’ll see more “twists and turns” in the months leading up to WrestleMania, but Rock vs. Cena II is one of the matches that is virtually guaranteed to happen.

– The Divas Championship match at the Royal Rumble between Kaitlyn and Tamina was bumped due to time constraints. To give you an idea of the WWE’s booking, the match was announced late last week but was not included in the final script of the show, which was finalized over the weekend.

– This hasn’t been confirmed but a number of people within WWE on the production side believe that Bruno Sammartino has finally agreed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Bruno has stated in the past that he would not be inducted as long as Vince around, but that has not stopped Triple H from aggressively perusing over the past few months.

Upon talking with company sources this week, we can confirm that WWE is considering inducting “The Kliq” together as a group – Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman. This would make Shawn Michaels a 2-time Hall of Famer, as he was inducted alone last year.

Bob Backlund was at WWE headquarters in Stamford, CT last week and is also rumored for an induction. WWE is still pushing for Bruno Sammartino to enter the Hall this April and the company is expected to make another strong push soon to get him to agree.

As noted earlier this week, Kamala has also been contacted about joining the Hall.
