Pro wrestling is full of iconic gimmick matches from annual ones like the Royal Rumble to ones that materialize when the circumstances demand it like Ladder Matches, Strap Matches, Street Fights, and so on. For many old school gimmick matches, it’s nearly impossible to credibly trace their origins, but for newer ones or ones that had a particularly legendary first iteration, it’s easier to know how things got started. Moreover, there are those times when it was the quality of the first go-round that facilitated the match becoming a fixture in pro wrestling lore. Only a handful of original gimmick matches remain, to this day the greatest version of all time.
Elimination Chamber, Survivor Series 2002
In 2002, WWE introduced the Elimination Chamber. The impressive structure merged elements of Hell in a Cell for its impressive structure, War Games for its staggered entries, and an old school Survivor Series sensibility for eliminations en route to a true finish.
The first go-round happened in no less mythic setting than Madison Square Garden with a star-studded field of Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Kane, and Rob Van Dam. It’s telling that all of them but RVD had already been a world champion, whereas Van Dam himself was arguably at the peak of his abilities, if still a few years from winning his first world title.
The action was predictably excellent, culminating in an ultra-satisfying conclusion as Shawn Michaels beat the odds, winning his first and only world title of the final act of his career, after returning from his back injury. While most Chamber matches have been at least good, none has eclipsed this original classic.
War Games 1987
WWE rejuvenated the War Games concept, with Triple H first bringing it to NXT, and since making it a Survivor Series staple three years running on the main roster. Each WWE edition has been at least good, if not great, in ways that erase how many lackluster variations on the match WCW staged in its later years.
The original War Games occurred in 1987, an organic development that came out of The Four Horsemen terrorizing babyfaces, before the top babyfaces of the day banded together to go to war against them. During the Great American Bash 1987 tour, the face squad of Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, The Road Warriors and Paul Ellering went on to defeat Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Lex Luger, and JJ Dillon inside the double cage. The inclusion of managers feels a bit lackluster in hindsight, but offered a clear way of protecting the regular wrestlers from taking the submission loss.
WWE has staged some excellent editions of this match, and there’s a case in favor of WCW’s 1992 edition featuring The Dangerous Alliance as the best ever. The original 1987 one quite arguably ekes out the GOAT title though for novelty, brutality, and the satisfaction of seeing the good guys finally get one over on the villainous Horsemen and seeing Dillon get some comeuppance was, in and of itself, a pleasure for fans.
Hell In A Cell: Shawn Michaels Vs. The Undertaker
Hell in a Cell has, in many ways, become the definitive blow-off gimmick match for WWE. The enormous steel cage structure is undeniably impressive and moments like Mick Foley taking not one, but two bumps from the top of the Cell in a single match cemented the gimmick’s place in WWE iconography.
While The Undertaker vs. Mankind is the most famous Hell in a Cell Match, and there have been quite a few excellent bouts inside the Cell over its twenty-five-plus year history to follow, the original match still takes the cake as its very best version. The storyline around the Cell’s construction was that it would be a structure to keep DX from helping Shawn Michaels as he tried to survive The Undertaker’s bid for revenge against him and earn a world title shot.
The match was every bit the classic one would expect from these two all-time great wrestlers who had all-time great chemistry between them. Even the finish was unique and satisfying as it saw the much-anticipated debut of Kane who arrived on the scene and cost his brother the match in truly epic fashion.
Blind Fold Match: Jake Roberts Vs. Rick Martel
The Blind Fold Match is one of pro wrestling’s more inherently silly gimmick matches, as the idea of two performers wearing hoods over their heads to wrestle is borderline comical and doesn’t exactly invite exciting bell-to-bell action.
When Jake Roberts faced off with Rick Martel at WrestleMania 7, however, a truly unique spectacle was at hand. The blind fold gimmick fit their feud perfectly, as The Model had previously blinded Roberts with his Arrogance cologne. From there, The Snake demonstrated his absolute mastery of pro wrestling psychology as he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, pointing around the ring to let their cheers help him find his rival. For his part, Martel more than played his part, trying the pointing gimmick too, while also playing the cowardly heel.
The match itself had a low ceiling, but the men involved made it incredibly entertaining at its time. Blind Fold Matches to follow thoroughly exposed the gimmick, though, including Triple H vs. D-Lo Brown, Drew McIntyre vs. Santino Marella, and James Storm facing Chris Harris in TNA. Each of these matches was poor, highlighting that the gimmick really demanded the right story and right performers, not to mention that it was probably best left in the WWE Golden Era that was a little hokier on the whole.
Empty Arena Match: Terry Funk Vs. Jerry Lawler
Pro wrestling feeds off live audiences with fan participation often adding a palpable sense of excitement and way for wrestlers to read what is and isn’t working in the ring. So it is that Empty Arena Matches are a bit counterintuitive, but can work in the right circumstances.
When Jerry Lawler blew off his Memphis feud with Terry Funk, the storyline at hand was Funk blaming all the biased fans and personnel in the arena for his previous failures against The King. What followed was a wildly entertaining novelty match with these two legends engaging in a brutal battle that was impossible for fans to look away from (through their TVs, of course—not in the arena).
WWE did a reasonable follow up with a Mankind vs. The Rock Empty Arena Match nearly two decades later. From there, WWE and other promotions that persevered through the pandemic were forced into other Empty Arena Matches—even an empty arena WrestleMania—during the pandemic. The unfortunate circumstances were no one’s fault, but highlighted that it took the right wrestlers and angle to get them into the vacated arena for this gimmick to really succeed.

Hell in a Cell is one of WWE’s most iconic and brutal match types, known for its unforgiving steel structure and the carnage that often unfolds within its confines. Here, we will explore the rules, history, and memorable moments of this legendary match type.
Match Rules and Structure
Hell in a Cell is a no-disqualification match that takes place inside a massive steel cage structure. The key rules and features include:
The cell is a 20-foot high, five-ton structure made of open-weave steel mesh chain-link fencing that surrounds the ring and extends beyond the ring apron.
There are no disqualifications, and weapons are permitted.
The match can only be won by pinfall or submission inside the ring.
Up to 6 competitors can participate in a Hell in a Cell match.
The cell door is locked with chains and a padlock once competitors enter.
Unlike a standard steel cage match, escaping the cell is not a victory condition. The enclosed nature of the structure and “anything goes” stipulation often lead to brutal, hard-hitting matches.
History and Origins
The First Hell in a Cell
The inaugural Hell in a Cell match took place at the Badd Blood: In Your House pay-per-view on October 5, 1997. It featured The Undertaker facing Shawn Michaels in a match that would set the tone for the brutality and spectacle associated with the stipulation.
Evolution of the Structure
The original cell structure was 16 feet high and weighed over two tons. Over time, WWE has upgraded the cell to make it more robust and imposing:
The current version stands 20 feet tall
It now weighs approximately five tons
The increased size allows for more action on top of the structure
Iconic Hell in a Cell Moments
Mankind vs. The Undertaker (King of the Ring 1998)
Perhaps the most famous Hell in a Cell match occurred at King of the Ring 1998 between Mankind (Mick Foley) and The Undertaker. This match is etched in wrestling history due to two shocking moments:
Mankind being thrown off the top of the cell onto the announcer’s table
Mankind later being chokeslammed through the roof of the cell onto the ring canvas
These dangerous spots cemented the match’s reputation for extreme violence and career-altering moments.
Other Memorable Matches
The Undertaker vs. Triple H (WrestleMania XXVIII, 2012)
Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker (No Mercy, 2002)
Batista vs. Triple H (Vengeance, 2005)
Hell in a Cell Pay-Per-View Event
In 2009, WWE introduced an annual Hell in a Cell-themed pay-per-view event. This event typically features multiple Hell in a Cell matches on the card, with the main event always contested inside the structure.
However, following Triple H’s appointment as WWE Chief Content Officer in 2022, the annual Hell in a Cell event was discontinued along with other gimmick-based pay-per-views.
Notable Statistics and Records
The Undertaker has competed in the most Hell in a Cell matches with 14 appearances.
There have been a total of 52 Hell in a Cell matches in WWE history as of 2024.
While most Hell in a Cell matches occur at pay-per-view events, there have been rare instances of the match taking place on weekly TV shows like Raw and SmackDown.
Variations and Special Stipulations
While the basic Hell in a Cell rules remain consistent, WWE has occasionally introduced variations to keep the concept fresh:
Falls Count Anywhere
In 2017, Shane McMahon and Kevin Owens competed in the first Hell in a Cell match billed under “Falls Count Anywhere” rules, despite this traditionally being part of the match’s standard stipulations.
“I Quit” Match
At Hell in a Cell 2020, Roman Reigns and Jey Uso participated in the first-ever Hell in a Cell “I Quit” match, combining two intense stipulations.
Impact on Careers and Storytelling
Hell in a Cell matches often serve as the culmination of intense feuds or personal rivalries. The brutal nature of the contest provides a fitting backdrop for settling scores and creating career-defining moments for WWE Superstars.
The cell’s imposing presence and the match’s reputation for violence add gravitas to any storyline, elevating the stakes for competitors and captivating audiences with the potential for unforgettable action.

Belair hit two Body Slams and followed it up with a Clothesline that sent Bayley out of the ring to regroup.
Bayley hit Belair with a cheap shot and brought a couple steel chairs into the ring. Bayley grabbed one of the chairs and kicked the other one out of the ring so Belair couldn’t get it. Belair dodged a chair shot and rolled up Bayley for a two count. Bayley grabbed the chair again and Belair backed away.
Belair started swinging her hair but Bayley blocked it with the chair. Bianca then connected with a Dropkick that bounced the chair off of Bayley’s face. Belair hit a shoulder tackle in the corner and drove Bayley into the turnbuckle. Bianca perched Bayley up on the top tope and hit her with some punches.

Bayley focused her attack on Belair’s shoulder and slammed it into the post before stomping on it in the corner of the ring. Bayley applied an Armbar in the middle of the ring and transitioned into a cover for a two count. Bayley brought the steel steps into the ring and stood on top of them.
Belair tripped Bayley up and she fell back onto the steps. Bayley hit a knee to the face and went for the cover but couldn’t keep Bianca down. Bayley tied Belair to the bottom rope by her hair and went for a kick but wound up tripping over Bianca’s hair and fell into the steel steps again.
Bianca lifted the steps above her head and launched them at Bayley but she got out of the way at the last moment. Belair shoved Bayley’s face into the steel but Bayley bit Belair’s arm to break it up. Bayley bashed Belair in the ribs with a kendo stick and followed it up with a Powerbomb into the steel.
Bayley set up some kendo sticks from the apron and the cell but it backfired. Bianca slammed Bayley through the kendo sticks and brought her back into the ring for a near fall. Bianca bashed Bayley over the back with a steel chair and the challenger stumbled to the corner.
Bianca charged but Bayley caught her with a kick that sent the chair into Belair’s face. Bayley wrapped Bianca’s arm in the chair and relentlessly slammed it into the steel. Bayley then tied Bianca’s hair around the bottom of the chair and booted the injured shoulder again.

Bayley smashed Belair’s face off the ladder and the SmackDown Women’s Champion fell to the canvas.

Bianca slammed Bayley’s face into the turnbuckle and then put the ladder on top of her. Belair hit a Senton and followed it up with the KOD on top of the ladder for the pinfall victory. Bianca Belair is still the SmackDown Women’s Champion.
Cesaro battled Seth Rollins tonight at the PPV. Rollins attacked Cesaro during his entrance but Cesaro caught him with a Powerslam right when the bell rang. Cesaro followed it up with a kick to the face that knocked Seth to the outside. Back in the ring, Cesaro climbed to the top rope and leveled Rollins for a two count.
Rollins connected with a DDT and went for the cover but Cesaro kicked out at two. Seth hit Cesaro with a knee to the midsection and went for a Suplex but Cesaro countered into one of his own. Seth knocked Cesaro out of the ring and connected with a knee to face off the apron.
The action returned to the ring and Rollins hit another knee to the face for a near fall. Cesaro responded with a series of uppercuts that sent Rollins to the corner. Alexa Bliss somehow was able to take control of Nia Jax’s body and slapped Reginald in the face. Alexa then planted Shayna with Sister Abigail and followed it up with Twisted Bliss for the pinfall victory. Bliss laughed on the entrance ramp as Lilly was shown on the jumbotron behind her.
Sami Zayn battled Kevin Owens tonight at Hell in a Cell. Owens dominated the action early and launched Sami into the turnbuckle. Sami rolled out of the ring to regroup but Owens followed him. Kevin threw Zayn into the barricade before the action returned to the ring.
Zayn caught Owens with a kick as he was getting into the ring and then beat him down in the corner. Zayn sent Owens out of the ring and flipped onto him. Owens hobbled to the timekeeper’s area and then got back into the ring. The referee checked on Owens to see if he could continue and Zayn got pissed off. Sami connected with a kick to Owens’ face and then stomped on the injured arm. The announcers noted that Owens is also dealing with injuries to the throat caused by Commander Azeez hitting him with the Nigerian Nail on SmackDown.

Kevin booted Sami in the face and he fell to the apron. Sami bounced Owens’ injured arm off the top rope and followed it up with a running knee. Owens got up in the corner and Sami leveled him with the Helluva Kick for the pinfall victory.
Opinion: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn delivered yet another great match tonight. I don’t think it is possible for them to have a bad match. They needed to deliver tonight to get the show back on track after the ridiculous Alexa Bliss & Shayna Baszler match.
Rhea Ripley defended the RAW Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair tonight at Hell in a Cell. Flair controlled the action early and kept the RAW Women’s Champion grounded. Ripley connected with a chop and knocked Charlotte to the ring apron.

Rhea hobbled after Charlotte and Flair caught her with a chop block. Flair hit a Spear in the middle of the ring and then applied the Figure Four. Ripley battled through the pain and reached the bottom rope. Charlotte kept the hold in but Rhea escaped by dragging them both to the floor.
Charlotte charged at Rhea but Ripley was ready and hit her with the top of the announce table to end the match in a DQ. Rhea planted Flair with the Riptide after the match.
Opinion: A DQ finish would have been bad, but a disqualification for using the announce table cover is just terrible. I guess a finish this was to be expected in a feud that revolved around both superstars losing in silly ways to Nikki Cross.
Bobby Lashley put the WWE Championship on the line against Drew McIntyre in a Hell a Cell match in the main event. McIntyre dominated early and sent Lashley into the ring post. McIntyre grabbed the steel steps but Lashley connected with a kick to the midsection and the steps fell to the floor.

McIntyre broke free but Lashley slammed him to the floor. Lashley set up a chair in the ring and slammed McIntyre’s face onto it a couple times. Lashley hit Drew with a kendo stick a few times but McIntyre powered to his feet. McIntyre shoved Lashley to the corner and bashed him in the ribs with a steel chair. Lashley then shoved McIntyre and he accidentally laid out the referee. McIntyre launched Lashley into the chair in the corner and hit him with the Future Shock DDT.
Drew couldn’t go for the cover and instructed another referee to get into the ring. Lashley went for the Hurt Lock but McIntyre countered into an overhead throw. McIntyre launched a chair at Lashley’s face and followed it up with the Claymore. McIntyre went for the cover but MVP dragged the referee out of the ring at two.
McIntyre stared at MVP and started walking towards him. MVP realized he was locked in the cell and McIntyre sent him into the ring post. Drew rolled MVP into the ring and hit him with the Claymore. McIntyre continued to attack MVP and Lashley capitalize by applying the Hurt Lock. Drew broke free by sending Lashley through the table against the cell.
Back in the ring, McIntyre hit Lashley over the back with the steel chair over and over again. Drew set up for the Claymore but Lashley ducked and McIntyre crashed to the mat. Lashley shoved McIntyre into the ring post and then Chokeslammed him off the apron and through a table below. Lashley brought McIntyre back into the ring and went for a Spear but McIntyre dodged it. Drew sent Lashley into the turnbuckle and rolled him up for a near fall.
McIntyre connected with the Future Shock DDT and geared up in the corner. MVP grabbed McIntyre’s legs and held him back. Lashley then capitalized with a roll-up for the pinfall victory. Lashley is still the WWE Champion and McIntyre will not get another shot at the title as long as Bobby holds the belt.
Opinion: Lashley and McIntyre had a great match tonight that unfortunately had a really underwhelming finish. I did not expect to see this feud end with a roll-up. Overall, Hell in a Cell was a flawed show that featured a few good matches. I thought Bianca Belair and Bayley had the match of the night.

On last Monday’s episode of Raw, the opening segment saw McIntyre interrupt Lashley’s promo where he addressed losing to Kofi Kingston last week thanks to a distraction from McIntyre.
This segment eventually led to McIntyre talking about how he wants another shot at Lashley to reclaim the WWE Title. Kingston made his way out and talked about why he should get it instead while bringing up his win over Lashley.
WWE authority figure Adam Pearce came out to booked McIntrye vs. Kingston in the first match of the night with the winner getting Lashley with the WWE Title on the line at Hell in a Cell.
The match ended in a no contest finish when Lashley got involved. McIntyre cleared the ring. Thus, they booked a rematch between Kingston and McIntyre one week later.
McIntyre ended up winning the bout with the Claymore Kick and will now face Lashley for the third time. Lashley successfully retained the WWE Title over McIntyre at WrestleMania 37 and at WrestleMania Backlash.

Opinion: I absolutely loved this match. This feud has been great and I hope it continues going forward. More Hell in a Cell matches should be like this one. There was blood pouring out of Orton’s leg and back during the match. The screwdriver spot was insane to watch and Hardy risking it all was the perfect way to end this match. I thought this match was going to be solid but it turned out to be excellent.

Opinion: WWE Hell in a Cell 2018 was a very good PPV. The worst match of the night was Alexa Bliss vs. Ronda Rousey. The rest of the show was entertaining. Both the WWE Championship and Universal Championship match ended in controversy. It has already been established that Samoa Joe will get another shot at the WWE Championship at WWE Super Show-Down. It will be interesting to see what transpires next in the Universal Championship picture.
– This past Tuesday on SmackDown LIVE, The Bar beat Gallows, Anderson and The Colons in a Triple Threat Match to move one step closer to a SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match against The New Day at the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event on September 16.
WWE.com has announced that Sheamus and Cesaro’s opponents will be determined in a Triple Threat Match on next week’s episode of SmackDown LIVE. The teams that will be facing off are The Usos, SAnitY and the tandem of Rusev and Aiden English.
– Tino Sabbatelli, who is currently sidelined after tearing his pectoral muscle during a match in April, revealed on his Instagram Story earlier this week that he underwent another procedure.
There’s no word on how long the NXT star will be out of action, but this type of injury generally requires a six to nine month recuperation period following the initial surgery.
On another note, Sabbatelli turned 35 years old on August 24.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Hell in a Cell Match
Charlotte Flair made her return to SmackDown tonight and cut an emotional promo about how difficult the past six weeks have been for her and her father. Charlotte stated that life is fragile and that she is going to make every moment count from now on.
SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya interrupted and announced that she was hosting a celebration for all women. The celebration quickly turned into Natalya gloating about herself and even revealed a large photo of her winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Charlotte said that she was glad that Natalya interrupted her because she wants a shot at the title. This then led to Becky Lynch, Naomi, Tamina and Lana coming down to the ring. Becky, Naomi and Tamina demanded a shot at the SmackDown Women’s Championship as well. SmackDown General Manager came down to the entrance ramp and announced that there will be a Fatal 4-Way in the main-event to determine who will face Natalya for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WWE Hell in a Cell on October 8th.
Charlotte wound up winning the Fatal 4-Way to close this week’s episode of SmackDown. Charlotte connected with a big boot to Tamina’s face for the pinfall victory. Charlotte was visibly emotional in the ring after the match and celebrated in the ring as Natalya watched on a monitor backstage.
WWE just announced that The Usos will invoke their rematch clause and will once again face the New Day at WWE Hell in a Cell on October 8th.
Dasha Fuentes caught up with The Usos backstage and asked them why they chose to invoke their rematch clause at Hell in a Cell. The Usos stated that they wanted to become 5 time WWE Tag Team Champions and were sick of New Day running around with the titles like it was a joke. The Usos said that they are not laughing and are determined to get their titles back after losing them last week on SmackDown.
The New Day recaptured the SmackDown Tag Team Championships last week on SmackDown by defeating The Usos in a Street Fight. Kofi and Big E connected with the Midnight Hour onto Jimmy Uso for the pinfall victory.
Here is the card as of now for WWE Hell in a Cell on October 8th:
As we noted before, Mr McMahon returned to SmackDown Live this week and announced that Kevin Owens will face Shane McMahon in a Hell In A Cell match at the upcoming PPV of the same name.
Though now it appears that it won’t be the only match taking place inside the infamous steel structure at the upcoming SmackDown exclusive PPV.
According to Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet, WWE is planning another Hell In a Cell match between The New Day and The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
It’s worth noting here that there is no mention of the WWE Championship match taking place inside the Steel Structure on the official page for the Hell In A Cell PPV on WWE.com and it’s speculated that the match will not be contested inside the cage.
So if WWE does plan to make the Tag Title Match a Hell In A Cell bout, it would be the second match to take place inside the Cell at the next SmackDown PPV.
Considering the performance of both these teams in their last few encounters, it looks to be the right choice to have their next match take place inside the unforgiving steel structure.
We’re less than one week away from WWE Hell In a Cell and officials still have not decided on which of the “triple main events” will close the show.
There are a few high ranking WWE officials that are against the Women’s HIAC match going on last, according to Bryan Alvarez. The Women’s Title match being the main event has been a hot topic ever since RAW GM Mick Foley announced on Facebook that it would close the show, then backtracked on his announcement and said the match order was still undecided. Alvarez noted that there are also people who want that match to close the show but there’s a feeling that it has to go on either first or last. There was discussion on fans possibly leaving the show if the match takes place in the middle of the card because of hometown star Banks. This sounds unlikely to us, but apparently its a legitimate concern behind the scenes.
Join us here this Sunday for our WWE Hell In A Cell Results and Live Discussion. In addition to the Women’s match, the two other cage matches will see Roman Reigns defending the WWE United States Championship against Rusev and Kevin Owens defending the WWE Universal Championship against Seth Rollins.
– As noted, the deal to bring Alberto Del Rio back to WWE was done a few weeks prior to his return appearance at the WWE Hell In A Cell pay-per-view. Del Rio’s new deal was not known to most in the company, but many knew something was brewing and expected Del Rio back in the company no later than next year’s WrestleMania 32 event in Texas.
– WWE Network announced the following additions for November:
Relive Brock Lesnar’s destructive introduction and rise to the top of WWE, spanning March 2002 to March 2004, with the addition of more than 170 hours of Raw and SmackDown episodes to the award-winning WWE Network. – Lilian Garcia will not be doing the announcing for tonight’s WWE RAW due to the European tour, as she will be handling those duties for the SmackDown shows. Eden will instead handle the ring announcing for tonight’s RAW. Garcia tweeted the following:
The Kickoff Show opens, as always, with the Kickoff Show Panel, which consists of Renee Young, Booker T, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves. The four talk in general about the dangerous Hell In A Cell match and its’ legendary history.
They kick it to the social media lounge where we are told to use “#HIAC” on Twitter tonight. Dolph Ziggler, Cesaro & Neville vs. Rusev, King Barrett & Sheamus
The babyfaces come out first, followed by the heels. Six man tag-team action is first to hit the ring here at the Hell In A Cell Kickoff Show.
Sheamus and Neville kick things off for their respective teams. Neville establishes control over Sheamus and tags in Cesaro. Cesaro and Neville hit a wicked double team move. Stardust and The Ascension are shown in the crowd as “The Stardust Section,” to screw with Cesaro and his “Cesaro Section.”
Cesaro finally gets the hot tag after some back and forth action and completely stole the show. He debuted some new moves and dusted off some classics, setting Neville up for the Red Arrow and the 1-2-3.
Winners: Dolph Ziggler, Cesaro & Neville
The Dudley Boyz Talk To Tom Phillips
In the social media lounge, The Dudley Boyz answer Twitter questions fielded by Tom Phillips. They say they aren’t sorry for putting Xavier Woods through a table and brag about becoming ten-time tag-team champions after tonight.
WWE Hell In A Cell 2015 PPV
The 2015 WWE Hell In A Cell pay-per-view kicks off with the usual bad ass elaborate video package hyping up the Hell In A Cell structure itself, as well as the top matches on tonight’s show.
After that, we shoot live inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California where Michael Cole welcomes us to the show as pyro explodes at the top of the stage.
U.S. Open Challenge – John Cena (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio
From there, John Cena’s music hits and as promised, he comes out with his U.S. Open Challenge to kick off this year’s Hell In A Cell pay-per-view. The fans sing “John Cena-sucks!” to the tune of his theme as he makes his way out.
Cena asks who it’s gonna be and out comes Zeb Colter on a motor scooter. He grabs a mic and tells them to cut the music. Colter says it’s time for people of different backgrounds and countries to come together, and it’s time for Cena to lose his U.S. title. Colter introduces Cena to his opponent — Alberto Del Rio.
The crowd exploded for Del Rio and did “Welcome Back!” chants. After a solid back-and-forth match, Del Rio caught Cena with a super kick while Cena was on his knees. Del Rio then got the 1-2-3 to become the new U.S. champ.
