John Cena No-Shows WWE Live Event In Portland On Friday Evening

WWE Champion John Cena did not appear as advertised at a scheduled WWE live event for the second weekend in a row.

Cena, who was advertised to work the final WWE live event before Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, did not appear at the show in Portland, Oregon on Friday night.

The reason Cena did not wrestle as advertised on Friday night was because WWE has pulled him from all in-ring activity leading into Sunday’s pay-per-view, due to the injury he sustained to his left elbow. Cena will, however, still compete on Sunday against Daniel Bryan in the main event of SummerSlam.

For whatever reason, WWE continued to advertise Cena on the day of the show in Portland on Friday. Instead of the original main event, which was supposed to feature Cena, WWE put on an unadvertised Battle Royal, which Daniel Bryan won, earning him a shot at Alberto Del Rio’s World Heavyweight Championship in the main event. Bryan won the match via disqualification, so Del Rio walked out of Portland as the champion.

We will have a full report from the WWE live event in Portland up on the website shortly.

WWE House Show Results (8/11): Oakland, Calif. – Cena Absent, Big Show Returns

The following are results from the WWE live event in Oakland, California. The event took place on Sunday, August 11, 2013.

-Before the show began, WWE ring announcer Justin Roberts announced to the live crowd that WWE Champion John Cena would not be appearing on the show tonight as scheduled. He then informed the fans that they could receive refunds if they wished. Cena was scheduled to compete in a Champion vs. Champion match on the show against Alberto Del Rio. Due to his absence, WWE RAW GM Brad Maddox came out and announced a Battle Royal to open the show, where the winner would take Cena’s spot in a match against World Heavyweight Champion Del Rio.

-The Big Show won a #1 Contender Battle Royal. The show opened with the Battle Royal for a shot at Del Rio’s World Heavyweight Championship. Big Show made his return, to the surprise of the fans in Oakland. The match also featured Rob Van Dam, The Shield, The Miz, Mark Henry, Ryback, Christian, R-Truth, Justin Gabriel, The Usos and Wade Barrett. It came down to the final four, which were Show, Henry, Barrett and Ryback. In the end, Show eliminated Ryback to win the match.

-Kane defeated Luke Harper via Disqualification when the rest of the Wyatt Family interfered. Kane cleaned house of all Wyatt Family members, but Bray Wyatt had a big smile on his face, seemingly enjoying it.

-Kaitlyn defeated Alicia Fox. Typical Divas match. Nothing out of the ordinary here. This was kept relatively short, with Kaitlyn picking up the victory over Fox via clean pinfall after hitting her with the spear.

-Rob Van Dam defeated Ryback via pinfall. Was said to be a very physical match. Ryback played his heel role well, garnering a lot of heat from the fans in the arena. In the end, Van Dam picked up the clean pinfall victory over Ryback after hitting him with his Five Star Frog Splash finisher.

-Mark Henry & The Usos defeated The Shield via pinfall. The finish came when Henry hit Seth Rollins with the World’s Strongest Slam for the 1-2-3. The crowd seemed to be heavily into The Usos, possibly due to Jimmy Uso’s exposure on Total Divas every Sunday night.

-Curtis Axel (with Paul Heyman) defeated The Miz to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Heyman interfered towards the end of the match while Miz had the figure-four leglock applied on Axel. As the referee was checking on Axel, Heyman scraped Miz’s eyes to break the hold. This led to Axel hitting his finisher on Miz for the 1-2-3.

-Big Show defeated Alberto Del Rio via Disqualification. Big Show earned the right to challenge Del Rio by winning the Battle Royal in the beginning of the show. Show won via DQ, but this of course means he did not win the title. Del Rio was DQ’d after bringing a chair into the ring.

-Daniel Bryan defeated Randy Orton in a No-Disqualification Match. The finish here came when Bryan powerslammed Orton through a table. This match went extremely long, as it ran nearly 25 minutes. The crowd loved every minute of it. Was said to be the best match on the card.

The following are results from the WWE live event in Shanghai, China. The event was held on Saturday, August 3rd.

-Zack Ryder defeated Antonio Cesaro and Heath Slater in a Triple-Threat match to earn a shot at the WWE United States Championship. The finish came when Cesaro hit Slater with his Neutralizer finisher. Ryder snuck back into the ring, threw Cesaro over the ropes and then pinned Slater for the 1-2-3.

-Natalya defeated Aksana via Submission. The crowd was said to be behind Natalya quite a bit. The finish came when Natalya forced Aksana to tap out to the Sharpshooter.

-The Great Khali defeated Jinder Mahal via pinfall. Was said to be a quick match, which the crowd was entertained by. The finish came when Khali hit his big Chop on Mahal for the clean pinfall victory.

-Dean Ambrose defeated Zack Ryder to retain the WWE United States Championship. Ryder won the right to challenge Ambrose for the title earlier in the show. Ryder got some decent offense in, including a missile dropkick off the top rope, and a nearfall off a Broski-Boot. However, in the end, Ambrose was too much for the Long Island native, as he picked up the pin after hitting Ryder with his finisher.

–Intermission–

-Curtis Axel defeated The Miz. The Miz was surprisingly very over with the crowd. Several “Miz is Awesome” chants broke out during the match. In the end, Axel picked up the victory over Miz via pinfall after putting his feet on the ropes during the pin for added leverage.

-Kane & Daniel Bryan defeated Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns via Disqualification in a WWE Tag-Team Championship Match. The crowd continued to get hotter, as they were more into this one than anything on the show thus far. Lots of “Yes” chants throughout this one. -John Cena defeated Ryback to retain the WWE Championship. Both guys got big pops coming out. Before the match, Cena addressed the fans in Shanghai by speaking in Mandarin. In the end, the match was won by Cena after he reversed a Ryback Shellshock attempt into an Attitude Adjustment for the clean pinfall. After the match, After the match, Cena addressed the crowd again, this time in English.

WWE House Show Results (8/2): Johannesburg, South Africa

The following are results from the WWE live event in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was held on Friday, August 2, 2013.

-R-Truth defeated Fandango in the opening match. Decent opener. Crowd was apparently way behind R-Truth in this one.

-Rob Van Dam defeated Wade Barrett via pinfall. Van Dam picked up the victory after hitting Barrett with his Five-Star Frog Splash for the pin.

-Justin Gabriel defeated Titus O’Neil via pinfall. Gabriel picked up the victory after hitting O’Neil with his 450 Splash for the pin. After the match, Fandango attacked Gabriel, setting up their match on Saturday’s live event, also in Johannesburg. Despite the attack from Fandango, however, Gabriel still managed to clean house.

-Randy Orton defeated Big E. Langston via pinfall. Orton picked up the victory after hitting Langston with his RKO for the pin. No copycat offenders here, so Orton’s “groin area” was safe in Johannesburg. Orton was said to be the most over with the fans at the Coca-Cola Dome on Friday night.

-Tons Of Funk & Funcadactyles defeated The Rhodes Scholars & Brie Bella. The gimmick here to explain Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes being on the same team was that the two were forced to team up due to pre-existing contract obligations. Regardless, Rhodes ended up abandoning Sandow, leaving him alone with the babyfaces. This allowed Brodus Clay to hit his Splash-finisher on Sandow for the pin.

-Sheamus defeated Jack Swagger via pinfall. Sheamus picked up the victory after hitting Swagger with his Brogue Kick for the pin. Apparently, Sheamus’ Brogue Kick spot received the loudest ovation of the night.

-Alberto Del Rio defeated Dolph Ziggler in a No Disqualification Match via pinfall. Del Rio picked up the victory after hitting Ziggler with his Super Kick for the pin. During the match, due to the No-DQ stipulation, tables and kendo sticks were among the weapons used. After the match, Del Rio cut a promo telling fans that they couldn’t leave until he told them to. This led to Ziggler attacking Del Rio and putting him through a table. Apparently there wasn’t a whole lot of heat for this match, as the fans didn’t seem to react to Del Rio or Ziggler as clear-cut babyfaces or heels. The crowd seemingly didn’t know if they were supposed to cheer or boo each guy.

AJ Lee decided this match would be a non-title match, as she didn’t feel the need to defend her title after defending it the previous night. Kaitlyn ended up picking up the victory via pinfall.

Was said to be a fun, entertaining-type match. In the end, Rhodes picked up the clean pinfall victory after hitting Sandow with his Cross-Rhodes finisher.

Barrett came out and cut a promo in the ring on Randy Orton. Barrett cut a heel promo, talking trash about Orton, who he would be facing later on in the show in singles competition.

-The Funkadactyls def. Summer Rae in a Dance Competition

Not a whole lot to say here. A noticable amount of people got up for bathroom breaks, visits to the concession stand, etc. Cameron and Naomi ended up winning the dance competition via crowd applause.

-CM Punk, Rob Van Dam & Sheamus def. The Prime Time Players & Big E. Langston

Really good six-man tag match here. Everyone got some offense in. The star babyfaces even let Titus O’Neil and Darren Young get in a considerable amount of offense. In the end, all of the babyfaces hit their finishers to pick up the victory. Crowd was really into this one.

-Jack Swagger def. Alex Riley

Not the greatest match on the card, but not awful either. In the end, Swagger picked up the submission victory when he forced Riley to tap out to the Patriot Lock.

Another decent match. Nothing spectacular, but above average. The finish in this one came when Orton hit the RKO out of nowhere to pick up the clean pinfall victory over Barrett.

Very solid main event. Ziggler was super-over with the fans in Macon. Finish came when Del Rio put Ziggler through a table. After the match, Ziggler hit the Zig-Zag on Del Rio. -Zack Ryder def. Heath Slater

Decent opener. Finish came when Ryder hit Slater with the Broski Boot, followed by the Rough-Ryder for the pinfall victory.

-The Great Khali def. Jinder Mahal

Mahal got in a little bit of offense early on. Finish came when Khali hit his Karate Chop on Mahal for the pinfall victory.

-Dean Ambrose def. The Miz to retain the United States Title in a Brisbane Street Fight

Another “fans choice” match, another “‘city-name here’ Street-Fight.” We’re in Brisbane, so it was a Brisbane Street Fight. Kendo sticks, chairs, a water bottle and a microphone were some of the “foreign objects” used in this match. Finish came when Ambrose hit his Face-Plant move on Miz for the pin. After the match, Miz hit Ambrose with the Skull Crushing Finale to send us to intermission.

-Curtis Axel def. Antonio Cesaro to retain the Intercontinental Title

Crowd was surprisingly into the “We The People” schtick. Was said to be a very good live match, as you would expect with these two. Finish came when Axel hit the Superplex for the pinfall victory to retain his Intercontinental Championship.

-Kane & Daniel Bryan def. Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns via Disqualification

This was one of the highlights of the show in terms of entertainment. Very good match, as well. Bryan and Kane were super-over with the fans in Brisbane. Ambrose interfered with a steel chair, causing the DQ. After the match, Bryan and Kane both chokeslammed Rollins and Ambrose. Bryan got on the mic and asked the fans if they think he can beat John Cena at SummerSlam. The crowd all chanted “YES!” He then asked if he has a better chokeslam then Kane. Everyone chanted “NO!” Kane then grabbed the mic and asked if “for one final time” should he and Bryan “hug it out.” Everyone chanted “YES!” so the two obliged.

-John Cena def. Ryback in a Tables Match to retain the WWE Championship

Ryback came out first, and seemed visibly angry at a fan holding a “Feed me more STEROIDS” sign. Out next was Cena to his usual mixed-bag reaction. A loud “Goldberg” chant broke out, which prompted Ryback to grab the house mic and attempt to start his own “Ryback” chant, aiming it with passion at the aforementioned sign-holder. A few tables were broken during attempts to finish the match from both guys. The actual finish came when Cena finally put Ryback through a table with the Attitude Adjustment.

The match was given around 15 minutes. Was said to be a good match. Miz was actually pretty over as a babyface, while Cesaro managed to draw decent heat.

-Natalya defeated Aksana

Was said to be a pretty bad match. A lot of rest holds. Finish came when Natalya forced Aksana to submit with the Sharpshooter.

-The Great Khali defeated Jinder Mahal

Apparently a typical Khali match here. Not going to win any “match of the year” contests. Khali went over clean.

-John Cena defeated Ryback in a Tables Match to retain the WWE Championship

Cena won his first match of the evening, a Tables Match, against Ryback. The finish came when Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Ryback through a table. Was said to be a fun match for the live crowd.

-Curtis Axel defeated Zack Ryder and Heath Slater to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship

The depth of the roster was exposed here, as Axel won a pretty random triple-threat match. Axel went over clean to retain his Intercontinental Championship.

-Daniel Bryan and Dean Ambrose fight to a No Contest in a Melbourne Street Fight

This match was a “fans choice” match. The options were a Melbourne Street Fight or a Submission Match. Of course the fans voted for the local option, so a Melbourne Street Fight it was. Foreign objects such as kendo sticks and steel chairs were used. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns from The Shield interfered on behalf of Ambrose. This led to Cena and Kane coming out to even things up. This also led to an “impromptu” six-man tag main event.

-John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Kane defeated The Shield

Basic six-man tag match. Everyone got some of their stuff in. The finish came when Kane got the hot-tag, cleaned house and won with a Chokeslam.

Live Notes: Was said to be a decent show. The event was nearly sold out, so there were close to 15,000 fans in attendance.
