Triple H Speaks On Daniel Bryan’s Popularity, Hulk Hogan’s Place In WWE History

The following are highlights from a recent interview with Triple H from NBC Sports Radio out of Los Angeles:

On Daniel Bryan’s popularity: “I think this is a moment in time – is the torch being passed? Or, is this the moment where John Cena continues to cement himself as the face of WWE for this generation?

“I think with Daniel Bryan, there’s an honesty there. Daniel is what he is – a frumpy-looking, long-haired, bearded guy who doesn’t really apologize for how he looks, but he’s that good in the ring. Historically, when you look back at the business, when you got past the flamboyant Hogan/Macho Man Era, you had the Bret Hart technician, a lot less hype and personality and charisma (who let the in-ring speak). And there’s kind of those shifts back-and-forth… Maybe that’s what it is – I do think Daniel is the cross-over of so many of those factors that make a Superstar big. He’s got charisma, he’s got personality, he’s different, he’s his own man. He’s just Daniel Bryan. And he’s damn good and damn exciting at what he does”

On Hulk Hogan in the WWE 2K14 video game and his place in WWE history: “Hulk Hogan will forever be the face of a generation of WWE Superstars. I don’t know that there’s a more recognizable guy – there’s Rock, there’s Hogan, there’s Cena, and there’s these recognizable characters that become household names. And Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest of all-time – a true legend in our business. No matter what, he will always have that place in the WWE Universe. Always.”

Daniel Bryan Speaks On Future WWE Stars, SummerSlam Preparation & More

WWE Superstar and the man who will challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam this Sunday on pay-per-view, Daniel Bryan, recently spoke with Zap2It.com about a number of topics. Below are highlights from the discussion.

On future stars in WWE currently working in the developmental system: “You know, it’s hard for me to say because I haven’t seen all those guys. Someone I have a soft spot in my heart for is Sami Zayn. He wrestled as El Generico in the independents. In the ring he’s just phenomenal. I saw a couple of his matches with Antonio Cesaro and it’s some of the best wrestling this year, as far as I’m concerned, even compared to the stuff you see on WWE TV. If he can get the personality to match his wrestling skills, I haven’t seen any of his interviews, but he has loads of personality as a human being and I can only imagine if he’s able to transfer that onto television he should be a big star, I’d hope. But you never know, because size might hold him back for a little bit, but talent always shines through.”

On the current WWE roster featuring smaller wrestlers such as himself: “Yeah and part of that is because fans no longer accept the slow-paced wrestling matches. Most of the big guys can’t wrestle the action-packed matches. That’s what makes somebody like Big Show so incredibly special. You see him and he’s seven feet tall and between 450 and 500 pounds. Yet, when I was wrestling him I’d dropkick him in the knee and he’d flip all the way around. He’s an incredibly agile guy, and he’s been wrestling since 1995. The same goes for Kane, who goes to the top rope. If you’re a big guy and you can’t move well, you’re not going to last long in the modern WWE system.”

On whether or not he’s doing anything different to prepare for his match with John Cena at SummerSlam: “No, actually. One of the things that’s the hardest about big matches like this is to try to not do anything differently. People often think ‘Oh, I gotta amp up my training,’ A lot of times that leads to injuries and the last thing you want to do is get injured right before a big match. So for me, it’s just a matter of doing the same thing. More than anything else, it’s just mentally preparing. With nerves and the position we’re being put in, the thing that gets me more tired than anything is being nervous. I don’t ever get tired when I’m wrestling, except for when I have a lot of nerves. I’d like to think at SummerSlam I’ll be very relaxed, because these are the kinds of moments you want to be relaxed for so you can enjoy it and soak it all in and just have a great time going out there and doing what you love to do.”

Jim Ross Blog: SummerSlam Predictions, Big Show’s Return, Lesnar/Punk

Jim Ross updated the blog section of his website following Monday’s SummerSlam “go-home” edition of WWE RAW. Below are highlights:

On final SummerSlam hype on RAW: “Good focus on the two, primary ‘money matches’ for Summer Slam Monday night on RAW. Fans can only retain and process X amount of info and the two matches that most fans perceive will drive the PPV got ample attention.”

On HHH as special ref for the SummerSlam main event: “Adding HHH as the special referee to the John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan WWE Title bout is an intriguing ‘wrinkle.’ This development adds a provocative element to the already anticipated bout that is now even more unpredictable. There are several moving parts at play in this bout that I can’t begin to intelligently analyze. (Make your own joke on that one.)”

On his prediction for the winner of the SummerSlam main event: “I’ve thought for a while that Daniel Bryan will win the WWE title at Summer Slam but now I’m not as convinced. However, I’ll dance with who ‘brung’ me. In non Okie talk, that means that I’m sticking with my original thought…Bryan wins.”

On how Vince McMahon and Randy Orton play into the main event picture at SummerSlam: ” Where MITB winner Randy Orton, Referee HHH, the McMahon Family, injuries, etc fit on this ride is anyone’s guess. I’m curious as to all these potential scenarios that I’ll get to watch live inside the Staples Center from the 2K Sports suite.”

On the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match at SummerSlam: “Thought the ending to RAW with CM Punk getting the upper hand on BROCK LESNAR (in Happy Heyman’s voice) and the Meyer Lansky of the WWE himself was compelling. I Tweeted a few days ago @JRsBBQ that I felt like this bout would be the most physical, one on one match in the WWE thus far this year. I am anxious to see how this match is competed stylistically. I’m still of the belief that it could end in a submission or a stoppage. I’m a Lesnar lean on this main event bout.”

On Big Show’s physical appearance during his return at RAW: “How great did Big Show look Monday night? I was impressed and know how diligently that he has been training and adjusting his diet. Bravo to the big guy who, when on a recruiting visit, enjoyed a home cooked meal in our then Connecticut home, broke a dining room tile (Dang, Italian tile, anyway :)) and we closed the deal over my wife’s homemade biscuits and a heaping helping of apple butter.”

John Cena Undergoing Elbow Surgery After SummerSlam

As we reported yesterday, current WWE Champion John Cena’s elbow injury is worse than is being let on. While the specific severity of the injury is unclear at this point, it is known that his arm is in really bad shape.

According to reports, Cena’s injury is bad enough that last week WWE officials made the decision for him not to wrestle until the SummerSlam pay-per-view this Sunday. Additionally, Cena is reportedly going to be taking time off after the match to have surgery on the arm, which could keep him out of action for a while.

Whether or not this means Daniel Bryan will win the WWE Championship at SummerSlam is anyone’s guess, but odds are pretty likely that he will if Cena won’t be around after the pay-per-view. Then again, Money In The Bank winner Randy Orton could always walk out of the building as WWE Champion as well.

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently updated the blog section of his official website. Below are highlights:

On the new WWE 2K14 video game: “The writing for the new, 2K Sports WWE video game to be released this fall is the best of any video game that I’ve ever worked on as the copy was spot on.”

On playing the General Manager role in WWE: “Can’t believe that some fans actually think that I’d like to be a TV show General Manager ala Raw or Smackdown. Sorry, but I’ve got no interest in either role nor has anyone ever considered such for me of which I’m aware. This role needs to go to deserving talents whose verbal skills merit the casting. I’m a Vickie Guerrero fan and am also anxious to see how Brad Maddox progresses. I helped Maddox with his announcing while in NXT and he’s a bright kid. Eddie Gilbert-ish as I’ve mentioned.”

On his all-time favorite WWE SummerSlam moment: “One of my all time favorite Summer Slam moments was doing WWE Radio of the 1994 Summer Slam with the wonderful, late Gorilla Monsoon from the first ever event ever held in the United Center in Chicago. As Gorilla said, “We both have the face for it.” I wonder if broadcasting WWE PPV’s on radio would work today?”

On Hulk Hogan’s 60th birthday today: “Happy birthday to Hulk Hogan as today he turns 60. Welcome to the club…it’s not so bad as 60 is the NEW 40. @HulkHogan vs. @ShawnMichaels at Summer Slam in 2005 was one of the great performances at any Summer Slam and FAR exceeded my expectations.”

WWE.com Provides More Details On Kane vs. Bray Wyatt “Ring Of Fire” Match

The official WWE website provided more details on the Kane vs. Bray Wyatt match at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view.

As noted previously, it was strongly hinted at that Kane and Wyatt would face-off in an “Inferno Match” type bout on the card.

WWE.com wrote:

Since making their frightening debut on the July 8 episode of Raw, the menacing Wyatt Family has had their sights set on Kane, brutally assaulting him on two separate occasions. Now, at SummerSlam on Sunday, Aug. 18, The Devil’s Favorite Demon will get a chance at long-awaited vengeance when he goes one-on-one with Bray Wyatt inside a “Ring of Fire.”

Later on in the article, WWE.com echo’d the confusion many had when the match was alluded to during RAW. The official WWE website continued:

Although it’s unclear exactly what the sermonizing Wyatt meant, it’s apparent the buzzards’ trail is now leading to a massive collision between the deranged newcomer and Kane at The Biggest Party of the Summer. And the much-anticipated battle – which marks Wyatt’s first match in WWE and Kane’s 11th SummerSlam appearance – promises fireworks – or, more appropriately, hellfire.

And finally, while nothing was officially announced on RAW, WWE.com all-but-confirmed a match between the two for SummerSlam. WWE.com closed out their article by writing:

Will Kane get fiery vengeance on his puzzling pursuers? Or, will “The Eater of Worlds” and his followers once again leave The Big Red Monster in a heap? Find out on Sunday, Aug. 18, when SummerSlam airs live on pay-per-view.

Heyman noted it would be a man-on-man fight, not a match, for whatever that is worth.

-Also on Monday’s RAW, the highly expected match between former partners Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes was confirmed for the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view.

Kane vs. Bray Wyatt In An “Inferno Match” At WWE SummerSlam?

WWE heavily alluded to a possible “Ring Of Fire” match between Kane and Bray Wyatt at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view.

During the Wyatt Family segment on RAW, Kane appeared on the titantron just as the segment appeared to be wrapping up. Instead of going to commercial after the sheep mask flashed on the screen, Kane appeared and cut a promo on Bray Wyatt, who was still in the ring with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

Kane told Wyatt that at SummerSlam, even his family won’t be able to save him from a “ring of fire.” According to one report, it is likely that a Kane vs. Bray Wyatt match will happen at SummerSlam in an “Inferno Match.”

The first ever “Inferno Match” was held at the WWE Unforgiven pay-per-view in 1998, and featured Kane taking on his “brother” The Undertaker in a rematch from their bout at WrestleMania XIV. The match featured the two brothers competing in a ring completely surrounded by fire.

Only four more “Inferno Matches” have taken place since the initial match, all of which featured “The Devil’s Favorite Demon.”

Daniel Bryan Speaks On His Beard, Origins Of Yes/No Chants, SummerSlam

The following are highlights from part two of the Daniel Bryan interview with the official DirecTV website:

On his beard: “Yea its bizarre because I will go signings and people will ask me when I’m going to shave my beard because they hate it. But it’s funny because I’ve become more popular since I’ve had the beard. My friend Christopher Daniels told me years ago that I am a slave to my whims. It was last year I just said I wasn’t going to shave for a bit and it just kept growing. Now I’m at a point where I don’t think I can shave it. It’s just part of the fun now.”

On the origins of the Yes/No chants: “It was originally a take-off of UFC fighter Diego Sanchez because he was all about positivity and would just chant “Yes! Yes!” I always loved that and it was just something I started doing when I won the World Heavyweight Championship. I was very excited and I just started doing it. Then it just started to catch on. I remember the first time I noticed, we had done a RAW in Seattle and people were chanting “Yes!” and I thought it was because I was from Washington State but then it erupted at WrestleMania 28. It just happened organically.”

On on past SummerSlam matches he’s enjoyed: “Summer Slam ’96 with Shawn Michaels vs. Vader. Vader was so cool with that mask. I was literally excited for that match a month before it happened. One of my favorite moments for myself for SummerSlam was in 2010 when they brought me back for the main event and last year’s SummerSlam when I wrestled Kane. It was just cool and surreal to be in the ring with Kane and winning the match. My friends couldn’t believe I was wrestling Kane.”

Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena Match Outcome At SummerSlam Revealed …

Daniel Bryan Speaks On His Relationship With CM Punk, SummerSlam, Training With HBK

WWE Superstar and the number one contender to the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, Daniel Bryan, recently spoke with the official DirecTV website to promote the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view. Below are highlights from the interview:

On finding out he’d be facing John Cena for the title at SummerSlam: “It was incredible and humbling. I have been wresting for a long time and most of the time it was in front of very small crowds who couldn’t care less about who was coming out there. I have wrestled in front of 13 people! And just hearing the reaction of the people in Brooklyn who were shouting “Yes! Yes!” – it was very surreal. Like ‘is this really my life?'”

On his relationship with CM Punk: “It’s interesting because CM Punk and I have a lot in common personally, yet we are very different. He is very brash and kind of says whatever he feels. I’m more laid back and not the most outgoing person. But we have a certain respect for each other. I have been on shows that Punk drove 14 or 15 hours for from Chicago to get paid 100 bucks. We’ve done those shows in front of 30 people together. It’s a long road for guys like us to get here. I’m always astounded. There was that December PPV when I had cashed in my Money in the Bank contract to beat Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship and Punk had retained his WWE title that same night. We used to work on the indies together and then there we were, both champions. No one really thought we could do it. It’s very cool and surreal.”

On his pro wrestling training: “I ended up training with Shawn Michaels. He’s the best. I left the night I graduated from high school, drove to Texas and trained with Shawn for a year. When I look back, I was so poor – I mean living on 20 dollars a month for groceries. I couldn’t fathom that now. It was tough but it was a lot of fun.”

On his idols: “I loved Dean Malenko and Eddie Guererro. Bret Hart was always one of my favorites. I’m also a big Seahawks fan and the guy who I really loved was a wide receiver named Steve Largent, who ended up being a politician in Oklahoma. He was always so respectable and was never about himself, he was about the team. A lot of people like the brash players but I like people who focus on the team and downplay what they do.”

Jim Ross Blog: Will WWE Drop PG Rating?, Lesnar/Punk Prediction, SmackDown

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated the blog section of his website on Sunday afternoon. Below are some highlights from his latest entry:

On Friday’s edition of WWE SmackDown: “Thought Friday night Smackdown was a really solid wrestling show highlighted by Punk vs. Fandango in what I thought was Fandango’s best outing and the Triple Threat match featuring Orton, Christian and RVD. I’m a much bigger fan of a wrestler earning a title opportunity than being granted, willed, decreed, etc a championship match. Yeah, I’m old school. Alex Riley did a really nice job in filling in for the mountain climbing JBL Friday night. Alex has done some commentary down in NXt and I’ve enjoyed working with him there. Riley is a bright young man who has a viable future in WWE and is the son of talentd broacdater Kevin Kiley.”

On CM Punk’s matches: “Does @CMPunk EVER have a bad match? I don’t recall one.”

On if WWE will ever drop the PG rating and go back to TV-14: “You asked…I do not feel that WWE will or do they need to go back to TV14 ratings for their broadcasts. There are lots of reasons but one is simple….advertisers do not covet spending big money on prime time, TV14 rated shows as much as they do PG programming. Plus, the talent, and not the TV rating, made the Attitude Era so successful. Cursing, foul language, edgy gestures, ect did not draw ratings and set WWE on fire but instead it was the talents who brought intensity and created a competitive nature in the locker room where several Type A personalities ‘needed’ to be the top star.”

On his pick for the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match: “You asked…Punk vs. Brock prediction at Summer Slam….I love this match and will be in LA to see it live and I think that Lesnar wins thanks to a little diversion from Happy Heyman aka @HeymanHustle. I do feel that this will be a compellingly physical contest between two alpha males who don’t’ enjoy not having the top billing. This match will be challenging to follow. The key to Punk winning, however, may be is feet. More on that soon.”
