  • Report On Why WWE Overhauled Survivor Series Main Event On Monday’s Raw

As seen Monday on Raw, WWE overhauled its plans for Survivor Series on November 18, 2012.

On the show, Vince McMahon mandated that CM Punk will defend his WWE Championship in a Triple Threat Match against Ryback and John Cena at the pay-per-view event. With this turn of events, Team Punk is now known as Team Ziggler, while Team Foley has an empty fifth slot. Prior to the change, The Miz quit the group in protest of Punk’s leadership, and was replaced by Wade Barrett after Paul Heyman aggressively sought him.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE changed their plans for multiple reasons. Among them was the belief that the originally scheduled main event, Team Punk vs. Team Foley in Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team Match, would draw dismal pay-per-view buy numbers. With rare exceptions, tag team matches as main events are generally mediocre earners on pay-per-view. The entire Bragging Rights concept was dropped for that very reason.

What also swayed plans for Survivor Series were the pay-per-view buy figures for Hell in a Cell on DirecTV being “surprisingly strong.” Privately, McMahon credited Ryback for the result and felt placing him in a ten-man tag team match, even though he would likely be left standing, would not be beneficial to him. McMahon feels they need to capitalize on Ryback’s momentum, which would require the muscle-bound grappler to challenge for the WWE Championship in the main event.

  • Survivor Series News: John Cena’s Likely Opponent

With only two more weeks until WWE Survivor Series, only two matches have been announced for the fall classic pay-per-view.

The main event is a traditional 5-on-5 team elimination match, with Team Punk squaring off against Team Foley. The WWE Championship will not be defended at Survivor Series, so the top singles match is Big Show defending the World Heavyweight championship against Sheamus.

John Cena, who recently returned to action after undergoing extensive elbow surgery, does not yet have an opponent. Cena is expected to wrestle Dolph Ziggler, with the two of them currently wrestling each other on WWE’s European tour.

WWE Survivor Series 2012 takes place on Sunday, November 18 from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar Rematch Update, The Marines Trying To Block WWE

    – On Monday’s RAW, it was announced that the main event of Survivor Series will be a traditional 5 on 5 elimination match featuring Team CM Punk vs. Tem Mick Foley. Mick Foley won’t be wrestling, but will bei n the corner of his team. Paul Heyman and Ricardo Rodriguez will be in the corner of Team Punk. To read WWE’s official match preview for Team Punk vs. Team Foley, visit WWE.com.

    – The United States Marine Corps. are trying to block WWE’s trademark for the upcoming WWE Studios film, “The Marine: Homefront.” The Marines were very outspoken when Randy Orton, a former Marine that was dishonorably discharged after going AWOL, was originally cast as the lead character. The Marines were granted a 90-day extension to file an opposition back on September 4th and have until December 12th to file the opposition.

    – As reported last week and over the weekend, WWE was tossing around a lot of ideas regarding how to book the finish of CM Punk’s Hell in a Cell title defense against Ryback. One proposed scenario would have been for Brock Lesnar to make a surprise appearance and cost Ryback the match. This idea was nixed because WWE is still planning for a Brock Lesnar vs. Triple H rematch and did not want to set up a Lesnar vs. Ryback feud with the Triple H angle still in play.

  • Team Punk vs. Team Foley Announced For Survivor Series

WWE has announced that Team CM Punk vs. Team Mick Foley in a traditional Survivor Series match will main event November’s Survivor Series pay-per-view. Here are the teams:

Team Punk: CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, The Miz, Alberto Del Rio

Team Foley: Ryback, Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Daniel Bryan

Survivor Series takes place on November 18th from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Earlier this week, the following image leaked online of collectors edition WWE Magazine covers featuring “Team Cena vs. Team Punk” and different participants on each team:

  • WWE Teasing Ryback vs. Punk Rematch At Survivor Series, Sin Cara’s Nasty Bump

    – WWE is already teasing a rematch between WWE Champion CM Punk and Ryback for November’s Survivor Series pay-per-view:

“Survivor Series offers a prime opportunity for Ryback to exact his revenge; can CM Punk elude the creature’s grasp until then?”

    – WWE.com cameras caught up with Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara after their win over the Prime Time Players at Hell in a Cell. Rey said their win is great for their team and puts them back into contention for the tag team titles.

Mysterio said that Sin Cara was almost injured during the match after landing on his head. Sin Cara was checked out backstage by doctors and appeared to be OK. Mysterio translated for Sin Cara, who said he was briefly knocked out after the spot, but feels fine now.

F4Wonline.com is reporting that there was real concern after the spot first occurred on television.

  • WWE Survivor Series Ad Reveals Major Possible *Spoilers*

Local advertisements for this year’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view reveal what could be major spoilers for WWE’s upcoming storylines.

According to the ads, the main event for WWE Survivor Series will be CM Punk vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship.

The ad also says that there will be a traditional Survivor Series team elimination match – with Ryback and Big Show as team captains.

While WWE’s plans might have changed in the past few weeks since the Survivor Series ads were created, they seem to indicate that CM Punk will retain the WWE Championship this Sunday at Hell in a Cell. Since CM Punk won the WWE title at last year’s Survivor Series, his match with John Cena would take place around the 1-year mark for his title reign.

Survivor Series 2012 takes place on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • What Happened After RAW, Survivor Series To Feature 5-on-5 Team Match

    – After Monday’s RAW went off the air, Sheamus came out and poured water on CM Punk to wake him up. They had a quick match but Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes hit the ring and interfered. Ryback ran out and made the save for Sheamus. The babyfaces cleaned house and celebrated together in the ring to end the show.

    – With WWE Survivor Series taking place next month, WWE is planning to hold at least one traditional elimination match at the show. It was proposed several weeks ago for the entire card to be elimination matches, but that talk didn’t go anywhere.

PPV provider iNDEMAND has released the official synopsis for Survivor Series and confirms there will be a 5 vs. 5 match:

“This year, the act of survival turns into an all-out quest for total domination…and respect! Don’t miss an incredible event featuring your favorite WWE Superstars competing in a classic five-on-five match.”

The inclusion of the word “respect” could indicate that WWE Champion CM Punk would be involved in the match.

  • Update On Christian’s Whereabouts, AJ Lee Says Bret Hart Will Appear On Raw

    – Reports surfaced online this week stating that WWE officials pulled Christian from television since he’s expected to appear at next month’s TNA Hall of Fame ceremony in Phoenix, Arizona as part of an agreement the rival wrestling organizations reached to allow Ric Flair to appear at Wrestlemania XXVIII. According to PWInsider.com, the reports are incorrect.

Multiple WWE sources state that Christian requested time off from the road since there were no major storylines planned for him and to also rest his ankle. He is still having trouble with his ankle, which sidelined him late last year and at the start of the year.

It is not known when he will return to the ring although he was at one point scheduled for next week’s television events in Canada.

    – Following her latest dramatic episode on Monday’s Raw, General Manager AJ Lee addressed her mental state before announcing that WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart will be returning to Raw in Montreal for the first time in 15 years, this Monday at 8/7 CT.

  • WWE Officials Impressed By Gunn On Raw 1,000, AJ Angle Nixed

    – WWE officials were impressed with Billy Gunn and his interactions with Shawn Michaels on Raw 1,000 and the belief is he’ll receive at least one match on a future televised show. Meanwhile, many backstage feel Sean “X-Pac” Waltman didn’t appear in great shape on the milestone episode so it is unlikely that he’ll be brought back for a match.

Some people were surprised that with WWE’s TV-PG directive and Linda McMahon running for United States Senate, officials had no problem having Waltman appear on television despite his involvement with a sex tape years ago. Some people backstage were also joking about how friendly Gunn was with everyone considering that he challenged Triple H and Shawn Michaels to a “shoot” fight years ago.

    – After AJ Lee was named General Manager of Raw last week on Raw 1,000, her first act in the position was to grant Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson a WWE Championship Match at the Royal Rumble. The angle, however, was nixed due to time constraints and Johnson announced that he would face whoever the WWE Champion is at the pay-per-view event.

WWE plans to downplay Johnson’s upcoming title shot until after the Survivor Series on November 18 as to not draw attention away from any of the other shows they have to promote in the meantime. Officials also want Royal Rumble, which takes place in Phoenix, Arizona, to be sold out by November.

  • The Miz Being Blamed For Disappointing Survivor Series Buyrate

WWE officials contemplated months ago of putting The Miz back in the WWE Championship picture come January. That did not happen and he has not won a televised singles match since the December 5, 2011 edition of Raw. There are people within WWE who believe top officials are blaming him for the Survivor Series drawing a disappointing buy number. Teaming with R-Truth, he appeared in the main event against John Cena and The Rock.

The pay-per-view event, which featured The Rock’s first wrestling match in over seven years, is estimated to have garnered 260,000 buys worldwide. It was reported that of that figure, 160,000 pay-per-view purchases came from the United States.

The estimate compares to 244,000 buys in 2010 and 235,000 in 2009, which nearly got the show scrapped from the annual pay-per-view line-up.

  • Survivor Series PPV Buy Estimates Lowered, Ross On Benoit

    – Dave Meltzer stated on the December 24 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that the Survivor Series pay-per-view buy figure is lower than the initial estimate of 280,000. It was reported that of that figure, 180,000 pay-per-view purchases came from the United States. The updated estimate drops the buy figure to 260,000 as only 160,000 pay-per-view purchases came from the United States for The Rock’s first wrestling match in over seven years.

The estimate compares to 244,000 buys for Survivor Series in 2010 and 235,000 in 2009, which nearly got the show scrapped from the annual pay-per-view line-up.

    – Jim Ross commented on Chris Benoit’s candidacy for entrance into the WWE Hall of Fame.

“Chris Benoit will never be inducted into WWE HOF. Great wrestler but horrific ending to his life overrides career.”

  • Early Survivor Series Buyrate, Chris Hero Speaks Out

    Survivor Series 2011

    – Based on preliminary data released by WWE, November’s Survivor Series pay-per-view featuring The Rock’s first match since WrestleMania 20 drew approximately 280,000 buys. The final figure is expected to be higher than 280,000, as this figure is only through the end of November, but its a reliable early indicator of the event’s performance.

Last year’s Survivor Series did 244,00 buys and 2009’s show did 235,000 buys. Company officials were so disappointed with 2009’s buyrate that the show was temporarily scrapped from WWE’s pay-per-view lineup.

    – Earlier this week, we covered the story of Chris Hero’s WWE contract reportedly being pulled due to elevated levels of testosterone found during his physical exams. In what could be a reference to this possible career setback, Hero tweeted this week:

“I don’t think I will ever be ‘done’ with wrestling. Thank you for your continued support!”

  • Update On Morrison’s Contract Status, Celebrities Attend PPV

    — Regarding John Morrison’s contract status with WWE, his original deal has expired. He agreed to an extension through the end of November. His last announced appearance takes place at next Monday’s Raw SuperShow in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dave Meltzer indicated during Sunday’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that Morrison’s feelings towards WWE are somber. “His heart is broken,” said Meltzer.

    — Among those in attendance at the Survivor Series were Michelle Beadle of SportsNation, Judah Friedlander of 30 Rock, mixed martial arts writer Ariel Helwani, This Is Hell lead singer Travis Reilly and This Is Hell guitarist Rick Jimenez. Mick Foley was backstage at the event.
