Report: CM Punk ‘Not Far’ From Returning, Could Wrestle At SummerSlam

CM Punk is set to make his return from injury in the near future. ‘The Second City Savior’ is currently recuperating from a torn tricep injury that he suffered during the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble match. He has shown impressive recovery after going under the knife and stopped using the brace just six weeks following surgery.

Punk He is going the extra mile in rehab and there is a huge possibility that he could be back before the time set for this return. An encouraging update comes from Dave Meltzer, who passed along an update on Punk’s recovery this morning on Wrestling Observer Radio

SummerSlam may be Clobbering Time

Dave Meltzer says he’s expected to be back in the ring this summer, 7-9 months after the surgery.

“Punk’s not that far from being back most likely. If he had his surgery at the end of January, you’re looking at the end of July, August, maybe September. It’s not that far away anymore. He might make SummerSlam. And if he can make SummerSlam, Punk and Drew for the title, that makes a lot of sense. Even if he can’t, you can do it a month after. Punk will be back fairly soon, it’s not as far away as sometimes you think because of that surgery.”

The report certainly keeps the hopes of Punk working WWE SummerSlam alive. The event takes place on August 3.

CM Punk’s bitter feud with Drew McIntyre

The feud between Punk and McIntyre is getting more fierce and uglier. There has been blood between the two veteran wrestlers since Royal Rumble 2024. The Chicago legend suffered the aforementioned injury at the hands of ‘The Scottish Warrior and the latter has been boasting it for months.

Punk managed to get even with his arch-nemesis when he cost Drew McIntyre the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40. Punk launched an attack on ‘The Scottish Warrior’ that helped Damian Priest to cash in his Money In The Bank contract. While CM Punk remains away from in-ring action, he has had verbal exchanges with Drew McIntyre. Their feud continues to boil every week and once Punk is back, fans will certainly see them settle the matter in the ring.

CM Punk made his return to WWE last year in November. Now, he is also returning to WWE 2K24 after an absence of ten long years.

CM Punk WWE 2K24 Entrance Video, His First WWE Game In 10 Years

2K has released the last update for the upcoming ECW DLC pack for WWE 2K24, known as the ECW Punk Pack, which will be available on Wednesday, May 15. They have revealed CM Punk’s appearance in the game, accurately capturing his likeness. They even nailed the WWE Universe’s rambunctious “CM Punk” chants.

WWE and 2K recently released previews of the ECW Punk Pack characters, featuring The Sandman, The Dudley Boyz, and Terry Funk. Today, they unveiled a screenshot of CM Punk, the last member of the pack. This release was accompanied by a video showcasing his entrance in the game.

This marks CM Punk’s first official appearance in a WWE game since WWE 2K15. During the interim period, the only way fans could get Punk in the game was via a talented CAW artist in the 2k community.

CM Punk returned to WWE during the closing moments of the 2023 Survivor Series event. That surprise in the Windy City caught everyone off-guard, and 2K also didn’t have him prepared for their upcoming game. They got to work in rapid fashion to correct this omission from the roster.

In case you’re wondering how far WWE video games have come since CM Punk was last featured in a game, you can check out his 2K15 entrance below. The difference is pretty astounding.

Living Color Vocalist: ‘CM Punk Refused WWE’s Attempts to Rip-Off ‘Cult of Personality”

CM Punk was adamant that WWE used Cult of Personality in all its original glory, Living Color’s lead vocalist Corey Glover.

After ‘leaving’ WWE at Money in the Bank 2011 as WWE Champion, Punk returned eight days later to Cult of Personality, a track he had previously used as a theme during his days in Ring of Honor. The song has gone on to be closely associated with Punk, who used the track in UFC, All Elite Wrestling, and in his most recent return to WWE.

Sitting down with the Drinks With Johnny podcast, Glover discussed Punk’s use of the theme. He explained that upon his 2011 ‘return,’ WWE wanted to make a track similar to Cult of Personality, an idea the Best in the World was against.

“They had their own music division of the WWE and they were gonna have somebody make up a song that sounded similar to Cult of Personality. But that was gonna be his entrance music. ‘No, I don’t want that. I want the real thing.’ He’s like one of the talent that actually got that in his contract that wherever he goes, that goes with him.”

CM Punk had no interest in WWE’s cover of his iconic theme.

The track is very fitting for Punk, who has developed a cult of personality of his own. It was this charisma that kept fans chanting his name during what would be a seven-and-a-half year absence from pro-wrestling. Nowadays, fans can hear the tune in all its glory in WWE as the Best in the World continues to be a hot commodity in pro wrestling.

Drew McIntyre Threatens To Tear CM Punk Apart in Glasgow in WWE Clash At The Castle Tease

Drew McIntyre has continued to hype a showdown with CM Punk in the Scottish Warrior’s home country as part of WWE Clash At The Castle.

During this week’s Raw, Punk once again had plenty to say about McIntyre, albeit after his nemesis had already left the arena. Teasing a showdown at the June 15, event, Punk said:

“I’m gonna find you. If you make me go to Glasgow, Scottland, I’m gonna be hiding in a bowl of haggis, and I’m gonna pop out, and I’m gonna break your face.”

Now McIntyre has also teased confronting Punk in Scotland. In a lengthy Twitter video, the three-time WWE World Champion ends by saying he’d be ready if Punk does indeed come to Glasgow.

“I heard what you said. If you actually turn up to Glasgow, you’re not going to leave in one piece.”

Should Punk appear in Glasgow, he may not receive a warm welcome from the UK crowd. Not only will McIntyre receive a hero’s welcome in his home country but the fans at AEW All In gave a mixed-at-best response to Punk for what would eventually be his final All-Elite match.

Will CM Punk and Drew McIntyre come to blows in Glasgow?

WWE Clash At The Castle: Scotland

The June 15, event will be WWE’s second Clash At The Castle event and will follow on from the 2022 show in Cardiff, Wales. The name is somewhat inaccurate this time around, as while Cardiff and the surrounding area is home to several castles, there is no actual castle in Glasgow. Clash At The Castle: Scotland will take place at the OVO Hydro which will also host a SmackDown taping the night before.

The Undertaker: ‘Paul Bearer Wouldn’t Have Felt Disrespected By WrestleMania 29 Angle’

Paul Bearer would’ve loved being in one final WWE storyline after his passing, according to his long-term ally The Undertaker.

The legendary manager’s passing rocked the wrestling world in 2013, as did WWE’s decision to incorporate it into a storyline. Bearer’s passing was repeatedly poked fun of by CM Punk as part of the Best in the World’s ‘mind games’ with The Undertaker ahead of their clash at WrestleMania 29.

At the time, many felt that WWE crossed a line and that more respect should have been shown to Bearer after his passing. On his Six Feet Under podcast, however, The Undertaker argued that being in the story is what his late manager would’ve wanted.

“Everybody was a little uptight about bringing that to me, thinking it might be disrespectful. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Paul would love the fact that even after he’s gone… I don’t think he would have felt like it was disrespectful.”

The Undertaker isn’t the only one who feels this way. Speaking to TMZ at the time, Bearer’s son Michael Moody made clear WWE had the family’s permission.

“We felt that dad would have wanted us at RAW last week and agreed to the angle… We knew Dad wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”

The storyline ultimately saw The Undertaker defeat CM Punk at WrestleMania, giving the Phenom his 21st win at the event; the final win of his legendary undefeated streak. As for Paul Bearer, he’d be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame that same year, and would have relished one last time in the spotlight.

Drew McIntyre Retaliates By Torching CM Punk’s Autographed Photo

Drew McIntyre has had enough of CM Punk and has taken a shot back at his rival in unique style.

‘The Scottish Warrior’ is losing his cool after consistently being at the end of multiple scathing promos from CM Punk. McIntyre left this week’s Raw early but ‘The Second City Savior’ made a surprise appearance on the show a few moments later. He soon seized the opportunity to take jabs at the Scottish wrestler.

Drew McIntyre did not return to the show. However, he noted CM Punk’s comments on him. Taking to his X account, the former WWE Champion took a shot back at Punk by setting the latter’s autographed photo ablaze and throwing the ashes on the ground. This is the same photograph that McIntyre acquired last week on Raw.

Drew McIntyre was originally scheduled to face The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor in the  King of The Ring tournament’s first round. But, ‘The Scottish Warrior’, who injured his elbow at WrestleMania 40, was not medically cleared to compete. Raw GM Adam Pearce announced that his replacement would be Jey Uso, who went on to qualify for the next round.

CM Punk-Drew McIntyre rivalry

The Chicago legend has been getting under the skin of McIntyre since WrestleMania 40 where he cost Drew McIntyre the World title as Damian Priest cashed in his Money In The Bank contract. The feud between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre is now intensifying every passing week. ‘The Scottish Warrior’ and ‘The Second City Savior’ have had several verbal exchanges in the past and they don’t seem to stop anytime soon.

Punk has shown impressive recovery after undergoing tricep surgery but he is yet to be medically cleared. Both Punk and McIntyre are currently injured and it seems we will have to wait a little longer to witness them settle the matter in the ring.

CM Punk Borrows From Kendrick Lamar To Cut Promo On Drew McIntyre During 5/6 WWE RAW

CM Punk showed up on WWE RAW this week without an arm brace on, showing that he is closer to a return to action. Sadly, Drew McIntyre is injured, and he was pulled from the King of the Ring tournament. That led to the Second City Savior cutting a memorable promo.

Drew McIntyre exited the arena early during this week’s RAW, coinciding with CM Punk’s arrival. Punk then urged fans to tweet at McIntyre to return to the arena and proceeded with his promo, during which he sharply criticized the Scottish Warrior.

During his promo, CM Punk dropped a line that said McIntyre hates the way that he walks, and hates the way that he talks. Many fans were quick to notice that Punk quoted one of Kendrick Lamar’s recent songs in that promo.

Punk and McIntyre have been feuding for months, but both have sustained injuries during this period. McIntyre seemed poised for significant roles in King of the Ring and Clash at the Castle. However, his injury might disrupt these plans.

In case you missed it, Kendrick bodied Drake in a few songs, including Euphoria, where he spit the lyrics.

It’s always been about love and hate, now let me say I’m the biggest hater I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress. I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon’ be direct. We hate the bitches you f*ck ’cause they confuse themself with real women.

Pro Wrestling Connection

This Kendrick Lamar and Drake feud entered the pro wrestling bubble when Shawn Michaels’ Sweet Chin Music was mentioned.

In his song, “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar references pro wrestling by alluding to Shawn Michaels’ famous finishing move. Lamar uses the imagery of “tuning up the band” to metaphorically deliver a Sweet Chin Music. The notable line starts at 2:23 in the track:

“Put the whole label on me, I’mma get ’em dropped.

Sweet Chin Music and I won’t pass the aux.”

Shawn Michaels later commented on Twitter/X, as he invited Kendrick and Drake onto NXT so they can hash out their beef. HBK even offered to mediate the proceedings. We will have to see if they take him up on that offer.

CM Punk Got Stuck At WWE HQ After Getting Locked Inside A Bathroom During Backlash (Videos)

WWE Backlash: France Premium Live Event on Saturday was a successful event and it sent the fans back home happy. However, the same can’t be said about CM Punk, who had a bizarre experience at the WWE Headquarters. The former WWE Champion was a panel member for the WWE Backlash Pre-show. Taking to Instagram, Punk dropped a string of amusing stories and revealed the adventures he had at WWE HQ.

CM Punk had an interesting weekend at WWE’s main office in Stamford, CT

‘The Second City Savior’ was seen recording the clip inside the WWE gym. Following the pre-show, Punk went to the bathroom to change his suit. However, he got locked in. He revealed that when he came out, everybody was gone. The 45-year-old wrestler further revealed that he got locked in for a long time and had to miss his flight back home.

He posted another story in which Punk showed a door reading: ‘Executive Wellness’ and stated, “that’s sounds really fancy.”

Leaving the gym, CM Punk said that he had to do “some Phantom of the Opera type s**t” and be “Dante from Clerks” before heading to the hall. He could be seen slapping the crotch of WWE legend Andre The Giant and this marked the end of the Instagram stories.

On Sunday, Punk provided another update. He’s still stuck at WWE headquarters and is thinking about sticking around for Monday’s WWE Raw from East Hartford, CT.

A similar incident also occurred recently when The Miz was stuck in a dressing room.

Punk is currently sidelined after sustaining a torn tricep injury during the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble match. After undergoing surgery, Punk is showing impressive recovery. He also dropped the cast after six weeks since going under the knife. The Chicago legend couldn’t compete at WrestleMania 40 but lent his voice to the World Heavyweight Championship match between Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins. He played a pivotal role in Damian Priest’s cashing in and costing Drew McIntyre the world title

‘The Scottish Warrior’ and ‘The Second City Savior’ have had verbal exchanges which have been boiling their feud. While Punk gets ready for an in-ring return, McIntyre has continued to take personal shots at his rival on social media.

Daily Drop (5/2): Kenny Omega’s AEW Return Turns Violent, Drew McIntyre Gets Personal With CM Punk Beef

It’s time for the Daily Drop on Thursday, May 2. Last night saw AEW present a very interesting three-hour block of programming, and there is a lot to unpack.

Kenny Omega made his return to AEW television last night in Winnipeg, but things did not turn out too well for him. After receiving a rousing welcome in his home city, The Elite inserted themselves into the situation to make sure The Cleaner left on a stretcher. Then, the Young Bucks chased that stretcher down and tipped it over like the dastardly heels they are.

Now, let’s get into today’s edition of the Daily Drop!

AEW:

Nyla Fires Back: The Native Beast, Nyla Rose, released a t-shirt to fire back at The Oklahoma State Athletic Commission, who said she cannot wrestle cis gendered females as a transgender woman. That new merchandise will go to help Freedom Oklahoma, a 2SLGBTQ+ advocacy group.

Pressure on Swerve: The new AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland spoke on the pressure that is on him now. He also said that all of his endeavors outside pro wrestling helped prepare him to carry the heavy ball for Tony Khan.

The Bounty Hunter: Bryan Keith confirmed that he inked a multi-year deal with AEW. He will be around for years to come. Keith signed a deal with AEW in February 2024 after competing against Eddie Kingston on an episode of AEW Collision. Since then, he has faced wrestlers like Kyle O’Reilly, Malakai Black, Top Flight, and Private Party on AEW television.

Bryan Danielson Can’t Travel: Brie Garcia revealed on the Nikki and Brie Show that Danielson hurt his neck at AEW Dynasty. She made a point to say that it wasn’t too bad, and it is the kind of bump that comes with being in the ring. Despite Garcia trying to play it down on her podcast, it was announced on AEW Dynamite that Danielson didn’t make the Winnipeg Dynamite because he was not medically cleared to travel.

Taz Gets Bad News: Taz recently visited an orthopedic surgeon due to severe knee issues. After tests and X-rays, he learned that both his shoulders and knees need replacements. He has opted not to undergo surgery immediately and will instead continue with regenerative procedures to manage the pain.

WWE:

WrestleMania London: Triple H did not throw any kind of wet blanket on the idea of London hosting the show of shows. At this point, The Game stated that all locations are on the table.

Mandy Rose Gets Lips Dissolved: The former NXT Women’s Champion logged onto Instagram to update her fans about a cosmetic procedure that she’s having reversed, her lip filler. In the post, she revealed, “We did some lip dissolving today! I’ve always been a little afraid to do this ngl but it was definitely needed and really wasn’t that bad! Swollen at first but a couple hours later the swelling went down, and honestly with the numbing cream I barely even felt it.”

Drew Brings Up AJ: In a very bold move, Drew McIntyre said that he would steal AJ Mendez from CM Punk if he wasn’t already married. This was a big shot, and it will only add to the rivalry that Punk and McIntyre are destined to have once the Second City Savior returns to the ring. He later tweeted and deleted a quote retweet of that video saying: “It’s a general statement, not specific. Even when comes [sic] to Punk there’s some lines you don’t cross.”

WWE Speed For Women: Triple H confirmed that WWE is looking heavily into featuring women in upcoming versions of WWE Speed. No word on whether they will introduce a WWE Speed Women’s Title as a part of this.

Drew McIntyre Brings Up AJ Lee As Feud With CM Punk Continues to Escalate

Drew McIntyre is holding nothing back in his feud with CM Punk, and now former WWE Superstar AJ Lee has been thrown into the mix.

Punk and McIntyre have been at odds for some time with Drew taking credit for the injury Punk sustained in January that kept him from competing at WrestleMania. At the April 2024 event, Punk attacked McIntyre, giving Damian Priest the opening to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on Drew who’d won the World Heavyweight Championship mere minutes earlier.

Now, McIntyre has brought up Punk’s wife AJ Lee in the latest escalation of their feud. On the Pat McAfee Show, McIntyre shared how much of a ‘troll’ he can be when it comes to the ‘Best in the World.’

“I’ll tear you apart on social media. I’ll step from behind the keyboard and I’ll tear you apart physically and if I wasn’t married I’d take your girl too. That’s the kind of troll I am.”

Punk and AJ married in 2014, mere months after Punk walked out of the promotion following that year’s Royal Rumble event. Punk received his termination papers from WWE on his wedding day, which was a sheer coincidence according to then-WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. After Punk’s return to WWE in November 2023, fans rallied behind the idea that AJ could return as well, though that hasn’t happened yet

Punk’s feud with McIntyre has been a highlight of WWE programming in recent weeks, but the two won’t collide just yet. In addition to Punk’s torn triceps, McIntyre is dealing with an elbow injury he has blamed on Punk. Nevertheless, the pair continue to appear on Raw with anticipation growing towards their eventual collision.

More on Drew McIntyre

Here are some recent articles regarding Drew McIntyre as he continues to hold nothing back in his feud with CM Punk:

Daily Drop (5/1): CM Punk Has Priceless Fan Moment, Power Struggle Building In AEW

It’s the first Daily Drop of May, and we have a lot to cover. Last night saw NXT bring the second night of their Spring Breakin’ event, and there is a lot to unpack.

First off, Wes Lee made his return from injury, and he is going for the North American Title, currently held by Oba Femi. The night concluded with Lola Vice defeating Natalya in an NXT Underground match.

Let’s get into today’s Daily Drop!

WWE:

New NXT Title: The NXT Women’s North American Championship is coming. On the April 30 episode of WWE NXT, General Manager Ava announced that the title will find its inaugural champion at NXT Battleground on June 9 in a six-woman ladder match in the UFC Apex. Before this event, there will be qualifying matches to decide the participants in the ladder match.

The Rock Responds: The Rock dropped a photo of himself during the WrestleMania 40 walkthrough. This was after reports that he was late and his tardiness caused issues. The timing of this post was apparent that he wanted to make a statement of denial that he was late to WrestleMania.

Who Killed WCW?: The trailer for Seven Bucks Productions’ upcoming four-part Vice TV documentary about WCW’s demise is out, and fans are talking about it in a big way. This new documentary, debuting on June 4, promises to include a lot of stories that fans haven’t heard before, and from a different angle as well. This should be a great watch, especially since Dark Side of the Ring creators are also involved.

CM Poop: During Monday’s draft on RAW, CM Punk showed up to surprise Drew McIntyre, who didn’t think he made the trip to the show. Punk later surprised a fan who brought a “CM Poop” sign to the show. The Second City Savior tracked this fan down and had to autograph the sign. He also took photos with the young fans who brought it to the show.

Power Struggle: Tony Khan spoke about the power struggle going on in AEW right now. This week’s episode of Dynamite in Winnipeg could be a very interesting one with everything going on in the company. Since Kenny Omega is returning tonight, it’s anyone’s guess how another EVP might weigh into things.

Online Battle: Dax Harwood and Eric Bischoff are having it out on Twitter. This is all in defense of AEW, where Bischoff took the opportunity to call Harwood a “chunky little monkey” who keeps tabs on his timeline.

The Wizard at The Game: Chris Jericho showed up to Game 5 of the NHL Playoffs, where the Winnipeg Jets faced off against the Colorado Avalanche. Jericho pumped up the crowd, but in the end, the Jets were defeated 6-3 by the Avalanche, losing the series 4-1.

Watch: What Happened With CM Punk After (4/26) SmackDown Went Off Air

CM Punk had a run-in with Chad Gable after this week’s episode of SmackDown.

The Blue Branded Show came live from Heritage Bank Center in Cincinnati, Ohio featuring night 1 of WWE Drafts 2024.

The Straight Edge Star was advertised locally for the episode. While he didn’t appear on the broadcast, the former world champion came out after SmackDown went off air.

He first provided an update on his health confirming that his triceps is not 100% yet but he is on track. The WWE star then endorsed hometown hero Pete Rose for MLB Hall of Fame.

Before he could finish his promo, however, CM Punk was interrupted by Chad Gable and the rest of the Alpha Academy. Gable challenged Punk for a fight but the former AEW star refused on account of his injury.

He offered to introduce a friend of his who had recently returned from the injury for the proposed fight and it turned out to be Sheamus.

What Happened On SmackDown

The Celtic Warrior then had a singles match with the former Olympian. This wasn’t the only dark match of the night as The Miz and R Truth also defended their tag titles against Judgment Day’s Finn Balor and JD McDonagh after the show.

Elsewhere in the night, we saw a contract signing segment between the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and his Backlash challenger AJ Styles. Rhodes also competed in the main event of SmackDown against Carmelo Hayes.

WWE had brought in a number of Hall of Famers to announce the Draft results. You can check our Draft Tracker to find out which stars were picked up during Night 1.

Drew McIntyre “Might Have Gotten Carried Away” By Taunting CM Punk At WrestleMania 40

Drew McIntyre has admitted that he may have gone a tad too far with his goading of CM Punk at WrestleMania 40, but was able to prove that he is a man of his word.

McIntyre won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WWE WrestleMania 40: Sunday, his first World Championship win in front of a live WWE crowd. After goading CM Punk at ringside however, McIntyre was attacked by the Best in the World and Mr. Money in the Bank Damian Priest would capitalize on the attack.

As countless fans have pointed out, all McIntyre had to do was to avoid taunting CM Punk and he would have left Philadelphia as the World Heavyweight Champion. In a recent Twitter video, Drew justified his actions.

“This is everything I worked for, for 20 years. This was my moment, I earned it, I’m sorry I wanted to soak in every single second of it at WrestleMania, make the world title moment last an eternity. Oh to celebrate with my wife, or my fans who have been through much.”

While McIntyre was pleased to have his moment, the contemplative former World Heavyweight Champion admitted that he may have gone a bit overboard.

“I saw Punk. I might have gotten carried away a bit, but I told him I’d rub it in his stupid face and I’m a man of a word. I was within striking distance on purpose and he didn’t raise one finger until I was distracted and assaulted me like the coward he is.”

Not only did Punk cost McIntyre at WrestleMania, but he also cost the Scottish Warrior in the number-one contenders match during the following Raw. While a match is expected between the two, that hinges on Punk being cleared and McIntyre signing a new contract with the promotion.

Jack Perry’s AEW Return ‘Imminent’ After 8 Months

Jack Perry is gearing up for a return to AEW following the company’s controversial decision to air footage from his backstage altercation with CM Punk from last year’s All In London PPV from Wembley Stadium.

During the NJPW Windy City Riot pay-per-view event at the Wintrust Arena on April 12, 2024, Shota Umino defeated Perry in a match that lasted just over 15 minutes. This marks the Scapegoat’s final NJPW match for the foreseeable future.

Jack Perry’s next appearance will be for AEW and it’s expected “imminently,” according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

All Elite Wrestling returns to pay-per-view this Sunday for AEW Dynasty.

Perry’s AEW Hiatus

Jack Perry and CM Punk were both suspended following their All In Brawl last year. Punk was later fired, and he has returned to WWE since then. Perry, whose suspension lapsed some time ago, never returned to AEW television.

Tony Khan was reportedly still irritated with Perry, as he saw him as the reason AEW lost CM Punk. With Perry’s return to AEW on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how Khan works this into the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeJ6Z-qrWNQ

Jack Perry’s Last NJPW Match

Some notable moments for AEW took place during the 4/12 NJPW Windy City Riot show in Chicago, including Jon Moxely winning the IWGP World Heavyweight Title. That event also marked Jack Perry’s last NJPW match for a while.

The match between Jack Perry and Shota Umino received the strongest crowd reaction. Fans brought signs to the event, both supportive and critical of Perry, and there were many chants directed at him during the contest. Perry embraced the heel role, as the crowd was filled with chants of “scapegoat” and singing “Oh, cry me a river” toward Perry.

He also entered the ring surrounded by security in riot gear, displayed a flag with the Chicago symbol to further provoke the crowd. And he wore a jacket saying “Cry me a River,” for good measure.

Tony Khan Says Airing All In Fight Made A Lot Of Sense, Makes No Reference to CM Punk

Airing the infamous backstage altercation between CM Punk and Jack Perry made a lot of sense, AEW President Tony Khan has claimed.

The footage was broadcast on the April 10, edition of AEW Dynamite and was presented as The Young Bucks explaining why they lost to FTR at All In 2023. Many believe that the footage was actually aired in response to Punk’s comments made on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour podcast. Punk was hardly complimentary of AEW during his appearance on the show.

Whatever the reason for the footage being aired, it seems to have backfired on Tony Khan. Many believe that the decision to air the footage has done more damage to AEW’s reputation than anything shown in the clip regarding Punk’s behavior.

On the Chris Russell Show, Khan was asked whether he regrets airing the footage in hindsight and believes that bringing the altercation to light was the right call.

“I think it made a lot of sense… We’ve seen the Young Bucks change a lot. We saw them get really dark during the retirement run of Sting. They’ve only gotten darker and more twisted. That’s why they felt like they should play the tape.”

Khan also brought up Jack Perry who hasn’t appeared for AEW since All In but has used his suspension to reinvigorate his career as the ‘Scapegoat.’

“It was fascinating to see after the tape played, the reaction Jack Perry got at New Japan. He got the reaction of a superstar. That is not altogether unexpected and it’s something very interesting, perhaps a side effect of this.”

One name Khan didn’t bring up when discussing the footage is CM Punk himself. The backstage fight would see Punk be suspended from AEW for the second time in under a year and was ultimately released.

Punk has since returned to WWE where his conduct is said to be exemplary as he’s been eager to get involved and help at the WWE Performance Center. And while Khan doesn’t want to bring Punk up by name, it’s clear that the memory of the Best in the World remains with AEW.

Rey Mysterio On His Daughter Reuniting With CM Punk, Winning the WWE Title (Exclusive)

Last year, Rey Mysterio was honored as one of the inductees in the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame class, while also battling his son, Dominik Mysterio on the grand stage of WrestleMania 40. This year, Mysterio found himself facing Dominik once again only this time in tag team action.

SEScoops correspondent MuscleManMalcolm caught up with Mysterio at the WWE media day in Philadelphia ahead of WrestleMania, Mysterio revealed that his daughter recently reunited and reconciled with CM Punk after the two worked together on WWE television over a decade ago.

Back In 2010, Rey Mysterio was immersed in a storyline with the leader of Straight Edge Society, CM Punk. It was a memorable storyline that’s still talked about today, due to its personal nature.  On one occasion, Punk confronted Rey in the ring, daring him to fight him in front of his family. He also mockingly sang “Happy Birthday” to Rey Mysterio’s daughter, Aalyah Gutierrez.

We asked Rey Mysterio about this angle and he revealed that Aalyah and CM Punk reconnected in person earlier this year backstage at a WWE live event. Despite their rocky past, Mysterio says they “got along great” and it’s awesome that they get along now.

“Believe it or not, she went to the show in San Diego for New Year’s, January 1st, and she knew that CM Punk was there. She goes, ‘Dad, can I take a picture with Punk?’

I said, ‘Let me tell him,’ and he was very ecstatic that she wanted to take a picture with him. They took a picture together. They got along great. So it was awesome. They get along now.”

A long time has passed since 2010, but Punk never forgot about Aalyah Mysterio (or her birthday). Last summer, when Mysterio wished her a Happy Birthday on Instagram. Punk trolled them both with a special message.

Grateful For Short WWE Title Reign

Rey Mysterio has held many championships throughout his storied career, including the coveted WWE Championship, which had been vacated in July 2011. He won a tournament to crown a new champion on  the 7/25/11 episode of WWE Raw. He wouldn’t have much time to celebrate, as John Cena dethroned him by the end of the night.

His reign with the industry’s top prize lasted a matter of hours, but he’s still proud to be amongst greats like Bruno Sammartino and Hulk Hogan.

“It was such a cool moment,” Mysterio said. “Moments that definitely stand out for the rest of your life. Just to be able to say I had it, whether it was like you said, for that moment being, it’s just such a cool experience. You are now attached onto the legacy books.”

Kenny Omega: Sometimes A Backstage Fight Is Needed, It’s Not Meant to Be Shown On-Screen

Kenny Omega has said that sometimes, a backstage fight or two is what it takes in wrestling for wrestlers with grievances to let it all out.

Since 2022, the topic of backstage fights has cast a dark cloud over AEW, of which Omega is an Executive Vice President. Speaking about All Out 2022 during a recent Twitch stream, Omega admitted that he is of the belief that sometimes, a fight is needed to let things out, but admits this isn’t the right stance in 2024.

https://twitter.com/puroresuflow/status/1779147574311535003

“I’ve played a lot of contact sports and I’ve gotten into jiu-jitsu and boxing and mixed martial arts… Sometimes emotions will get the best of you and people will want to throw hands. I am unfortunately, or fortunately a believer of it, I think that if it’s decided ‘Hey, this is the best way to solve things’ and you can shake hands after and move on after, I’m actually a believer of fighting.

“I am and it sounds terrible to say and that’s why, don’t make me an EVP in 2024. You can’t do that stuff anymore. I just feel that sometimes that’s how you have to settle things. Sometimes.”

AEW All Out 2022’s backstage fight, now known as ‘Brawl Out,’ would not be the last backstage fight, as Jack Perry and CM Punk would get physical at AEW All In: London less than a year later. Footage from the fight was recently aired on AEW Dynamite though many believe the move to ‘stick it’ to Punk has backfired on Tony Khan.

During the stream, Omega didn’t mention the All In fight or Khan’s decision to air the footage directly, but said that such fights aren’t meant to be shown on screen.

“I don’t mean you have to settle it and then it be shown on screen to everyone or people have to brag online about who won [or] who lost. No, it’s not for that purpose. It’s for the purpose of getting that stuff out that you need to get out.”

Ultimately, AEW has aired the footage from All In and that can’t be undone. Many now believe though that AEW and Khan are regretting the decision, as many videos of the footage shared online are being flagged by the promotion.

As for Omega, he is continuing to recover from diverticulitis and it remains unclear when he will be back in the ring. We’re continuing to wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Tony Khan Can Be The Leader AEW Needs By Getting Out Of His Own Way

Countless clichés spring to mind after witnessing AEW Dynamite, but perhaps the most apt is, “those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”  Wednesday night felt like a page taken from the AOL/Time Warner playbook.

Despite potential ratings boosts, Tony Khan’s decision to air the altercation between Jack Perry and CM Punk likely did more harm than good—not just to AEW, but to all his employees. Comparatively, this “fight” seemed less intense than typical scuffles in South Philly diners during WrestleMania weekend. This decision casts doubt on Khan’s confidence in the high-profile stars he has under contract, such as Swerve Strickland, Adam Copeland, Samoa Joe, Will Ospreay, and Okada. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

It felt particularly petty and mean-spirited for AEW to announce the airing of this footage during WrestleMania, contradicting the optimism that marked the company’s early days. It seemed like an admission of defeat: “We have nothing left but footage of a wrestler who’s no longer with us.” In reality, AEW has plenty to offer; however, Khan often leaves projects unfinished, forgets them, and metaphorically unplugs the microwave.

Regardless of who was featured on Dynamite, nothing could overshadow the impact of the notorious security camera footage. While it contributed nothing to advancing any current narratives, except perhaps the story CM Punk told on the “MMA Hour,” it diverted focus from active wrestlers to those no longer with the company. As a result, fans chanted for WWE “Superstars” instead of AEW’s Ricky Starks, Wardlow, or Thunder Rosa. Cody Rhodes, during WrestleMania week, did a far better job of promoting AEW than anyone else, expressing pride in the collective effort to launch the company.

This begs the question: Does Khan truly aspire to make AEW the top pro wrestling promotion, or is he more driven by personal vendettas against former stars?

The events of Wednesday suggest the latter. Although Khan likely has good intentions, it’s crucial for him to reassess and prioritize his goals. Khan has undoubtedly contributed positively to pro wrestling, but he has also demonstrated a consistent inability (or unwillingness) to avoid self-sabotage.

AEW is treading water. Ironically, the company needs a decisive leader to reach the next level. The best apology Khan could offer his roster would be to appoint an experienced figure to fill this role.

Indeed, actions speak louder than words.

AEW Dynamite Sees Viewership Spike In Response To CM Punk & Jack Perry Fight Footage

The hype was heavy for AEW Dynamite this week, but it wasn’t a match that fans were excited to see. Tony Khan delivered on CM Punk and Jack Perry’s fight footage at All In. This came with a boost in viewership.

The April 10 episode of AEW Dynamite brought an average viewership of 819,000 viewers, with a .30 in the 18 to 49 demographic, per Wrestlenomics. That number is up from last week’s 752,000 viewers.

AEW brought their April 10 episode of Dynamite to Charleston, West Virginia. Fans were chanting “CM Punk” by the end of the night at the Young Bucks in response to that footage.

Fan Response

The company delivered on their promise to reveal security footage from Punk and Jack Perry’s backstage brawl at All In. The silent video went viral, with many people providing their own soundtracks for the silent clip.

A number of fans commented on how this footage didn’t make the company look good in any way. Referee Paul Turner did receive some props for how he stepped in to break up the Punk and Perry fight.

SE Scoops provided an in-depth article detailing the course of events that led to Tony Khan allowing that footage to air on his television show.

AEW Gets Thousands of Dislikes For Omitting CM Punk All In Footage From YouTube

Tony Khan may be regretting his decision to ‘stick it’ to CM Punk as footage of the All In London 2023 backstage altercation has been cut from AEW’s YouTube channel.

The April 10, 2024, edition of Dynamite featured the much-anticipated footage that shows CM Punk’s altercation with Jack Perry backstage in Wembley Stadium. Khan had claimed before the show that releasing the footage was simply in the best interest of entertaining the fans. Despite Khan’s claim, many have seen this decision as payback for the comments Punk made during the MMA Hour show.

Khan seems to have had second thoughts on releasing the footage given what is transpiring on AEW’s YouTube channel. A video of the Young Bucks’ segment in which they showed the footage has been uploaded but the ten-minute video does not feature the All In footage as you can see (or rather, not see) below.

AEW may have tried to embarrass CM Punk by releasing this footage but if so, that plan has backfired spectacularly. Not only have fans and those in the industry criticized AEW for airing the footage, but the YouTube video has scored thousands more dislikes than likes.

The segment (sans All In footage) has not been met well by fans on YouTube.

Ultimately, the decision has been made to air the footage and that can’t be undone now, despite AEW flagging several videos online showing the All In altercation. While Khan may have done this to get to CM Punk following his comments to Ariel Helwani (another individual Khan has had issues with) it looks like this situation has done more harm than good for All Elite Wrestling.

AEW Misfired With the CM Punk All In Footage, But It Doesn’t Rank Among Wrestling’s Worst Ratings Stunts

All Elite Wrestling decided to fight back against the tirade from paid-off podcasters, bots, online bullies, and louts, including its serial one-man internet narrative, CM Punk.

Punk spilled his own version of the All In brawl on fanboy Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour podcast last week. Tony Khan’s mismanagement of Punk and the controversies surrounding him have derailed AEW creatively, namely, in how Punk is always used as a hammer to bludgeon the company.

AEW has its problems, but it also faces a constant barrage from former wrestling personalities on Legends contracts or angry and jealous old-timers who feel Khan owes them a job. Wrestlers make more than they ever have once they reach the top levels. It wasn’t long ago that a regular talent on Raw would make $60,000 a year depending on who they were and the contract they signed. Still, WWE’s payroll makes up way less than 10% of its total expenses, a number that in most companies is around 50% or more.

Under this environment, AEW owner Tony Khan decided to fight back by airing backstage footage of CM Punk’s confrontation and choking of Jack Perry during the Wembley All In PPV. Most notable was that Punk’s story was largely straightforward, and while Punk was really angry at Khan and was dragged off by Chris Hero and Jerry Lynn, Khan’s life didn’t appear to be in danger in the footage he chose to air.

Some have taken aim at Perry for not defending himself more forcefully and getting tossed around by Punk, but considering he was standing right in front of the owner of the company when this happened, that criticism doesn’t hold much water.

People are seeing this through the eyes they choose—whether they like Punk or not and how they view workplace confrontations. What I know is, most people would be fired for what Punk did, whether it was backstage at a wrestling company or somewhere else.

The Young Bucks, who were tasked with using this incident to fuel their fourth matchup with FTR, seemed to sum it up best as a “high school scrap.” When they attacked PAC later in the show, they were met with a CM Punk chant. After spending nearly two years trying to distance themselves from the fog of All Out, including reinventing themselves and staking a claim to being the best heel act in wrestling, that had to sting.

The Bucks and FTR deserve better. So does everyone else backstage, and that’s not limited to the wrestlers.

Viewership data hasn’t been released for the ratings stunt as of this writing, but is there a number that would justify this decision? CM Punk is the one who reopened this wound and shone a light back on the backstage dysfunction AEW has tried so desperately to move on from since last summer.

Tony Khan still has the power to command attention and shift the industry’s attention back to his company. However, it’s not in a way that draws money or improves the company’s perception with fans.

All that said, longtime viewers have seen far worse. Here are 10 incidents that may have seemed like a good idea to somebody at the time, but backfired spectacularly.

10. WCW Spoil’s Mick Foley’s WWF title win

Mick Foley, who wrestled as Cactus Jack in WCW for years, was always a reliable and hated heel, even as the company struggled during the early ’90s. Foley was versatile; he could wrestle, brawl, and he sacrificed countless cartilage, blood, and even an ear for the company.

By 1999, Foley had joined the WWF, which had finally rebounded after being dominated by WCW for two years. Steve Austin and The Rock emerged as historic draws, with Foley right behind them as a massive, drawing babyface. Vince McMahon initially didn’t see Foley as much of a factor, but his Mankind character was creepy and fit well within the WWF, especially in matches against the Undertaker and other top babyfaces.

Recognizing their need for greater star power, the WWF began presenting Foley differently, portraying his journey into wrestling with a more three-dimensional character development. This led to a feud with The Rock and a World title match on Raw that was pre-taped.

On orders from Eric Bischoff, who couldn’t believe fans would accept Foley as a credible champion, Bischoff repeated a tactic WCW had used before.

“That’ll put butts in the seats,” Tony Schiavone said sarcastically, relaying Raw’s spoilers on Bischoff’s directive. When 9 p.m. arrived and Raw aired during Nitro’s second hour, hundreds of thousands of Nitro viewers switched to Raw to witness Foley winning the WWF title.

Despite its steady decline, Nitro was still a ratings, buys, and crowds powerhouse in 1999. The spoiler reveal demonstrated that Bischoff and WCW were out of touch and perceived as mean-spirited.

9. Dusty Rhodes bloody angle with the Road Warriors

By 1988, Crockett Promotions was floundering. Magnum TA’s career had abruptly ended two years earlier, and emerging talents like Lex Luger and Sting hadn’t yet reached the stature needed to assume top babyface roles within the company.

In a desperate move, Dusty Rhodes resorted to a strategy that had previously served him well—creating a formidable heel group by having them brutally attack him. This time, it involved the Road Warriors, one of the world’s most popular tag teams. They betrayed their six-man tag team partner, Dusty Rhodes, by using a spike from their shoulder pads to jab into Rhodes’ eye. The footage was blurred on TBS, which only made the incident appear more gruesome, and this controversial angle—which violated several TBS guidelines—resulted in Rhodes being dismissed as the booker. It was intended to be more than just a ratings stunt, yet that’s essentially what it became. After a feud with the Midnight Express and capturing the NWA tag titles for the first time, the Warriors’ newfound infamy couldn’t deter the fans’ adoration, rendering the whole effort futile.

8. Road Warrior Hawk pushed off the Titan Tron

Fans who grew up in the late ’90s often remember the Attitude Era fondly, despite it being rife with ratings stunts designed to boost Raw in its weekly competition against Nitro. Many of these stunts were in poor taste and would be unthinkable for today’s broadcasts.

The Road Warriors returned to WWE in 1996 after leaving WCW. Vince McMahon attempted to recreate or modernize the Legion of Doom (LOD) with different appearances and names. For a time, Sunny managed them, and Darren “Puke” Drozdov was added as a third member. It seemed McMahon was more focused on undermining the Road Warriors’ legacy than leveraging their draw power. This was evident in various gimmicks, such as assigning them a doll as a manager during their earlier stint in the company or exploiting Hawk’s real-life struggles with alcoholism in a storyline.

A particularly disturbing storyline featured Hawk climbing to the top of the TitanTron, threatening to jump off, only to be pushed by his envious partner, Drozdov. While some WWF fans defended the angle, long-time supporters of the Road Warriors were appalled by their treatment, and wrestling journalists expressed their disgust. Unfortunately, this was just a glimpse of the extreme measures taken during this era.

7. Jerry Lawler gets ran over with a car

Memphis wrestling was notorious for its wild angles, eccentric characters, and sometimes stretching the bounds of believability to their limits.

In a particularly controversial episode, the program crossed a line with the Memphis Police Department during a feud involving Jerry Lawler and Eddie and Doug Gilbert. The Gilberts, in a storyline, spotted Lawler in the parking lot outside the studio and ran him over with a car. This episode aired live, including the shocking angle, leading to dozens of phone calls to the police from concerned viewers reporting the Gilberts’ actions and complaints directed at the TV studio.

As a result of the uproar and police involvement, a remorseful Lawler was compelled to appear on television to assure the audience that he was, in fa
ct, unharmed and not as severely injured as the storyline suggested.

6. The 1st time Stephanie McMahon was forcibly married on Raw

Stephanie McMahon entered her early 20s and began to feature regularly on WWF TV. Initially portrayed as a damsel in distress, her character evolved following a heel turn, where her screechy, unnerving voice and tendency to overshadow anyone she shared the screen with became her defining traits.

Her storyline involvement with Test, her first on-air boyfriend, was fraught with difficulties. Notably, they encountered the Undertaker and his group of lower-card wrestlers, along with a “symbol” that resembled a cross. This symbol, previously used in a storyline to crucify Steve Austin, became a prop in a plot to tie Stephanie to it and force her into a marriage with the Undertaker inside the ring.

The narrative reached a climax when, after numerous babyfaces attempted to save Stephanie, Steve Austin made a dramatic entrance. He incapacitated several of the Undertaker’s minions with chair shots before ultimately confronting the Undertaker himself and rescuing Stephanie. This act marked one of Austin’s first definitive babyface moments on Raw TV. Despite the problematic elements of forced marriage, misogyny, religious insensitivity, and overall moral degradation, this storyline inadvertently served to further elevate Austin’s popularity in 1998—a time when his character was already experiencing significant momentum.

5. The 2nd Time Stephanie McMahon was forcibly married on Raw

During the peak of the Attitude Era, WWE intensified its edgy content with moments like women flashing crowds and cameras—antics often orchestrated by DX members Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Despite the influx of fitness models on its roster, Stephanie McMahon, being the boss’s daughter, remained the focal female character.

Her storyline saw a second coerced marriage while she was “engaged” to Test, even as Triple H was publicly in a relationship with Joanie ‘Chyna” Laurer. In a plot twist that took place in Vegas, Triple H, leading the heel faction DX at the time, took an unconscious Stephanie through a drive-thru chapel in Vegas, marrying her by mimicking her voice for consent.

It was later revealed that Stephanie was complicit in the entire scheme, having turned heel as part of her nefarious plan. Around this period, Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Stephanie began their real-life relationship, even as Triple H was still involved with Chyna.

This storyline marked a controversial point in WWE programming, initiating the era of the McMahon family as prominent figures on WWF TV. Stephanie, despite often being sexualized in storylines, typically emerged victorious, regardless of her character’s moral alignment. Her personal decisions, such as getting breast implants or participating in sexually humiliating angles, were purportedly leveraged against other female talents, suggesting that if Stephanie was willing to engage in such storylines, they had no ground to refuse. These two forced marriage angles signaled the start of a problematic period for women in WWE, reflecting broader issues within the industry’s portrayal of female characters.

4. Katie Vick

Why resort to actual wrestling to fuel a feud when you can opt for a tasteless alternative? This was the approach taken during Triple H’s feud with Kane, the masked storyline brother of the Undertaker.

The storyline took a macabre turn when it was disclosed that Kane had a childhood girlfriend named Katie Vick, who had tragically died. WWE produced a particularly distasteful pre-taped segment set in a funeral home, where Triple H simulated sex with Vick, represented by a mannequin, inside a coffin. The depiction of Triple H’s actions was so graphic that it culminated in the mannequin’s “brains” spilling out.

This angle was hyped as a significant reveal, yet it ultimately left fans feeling bewildered and repulsed. It is frequently cited as one of the most deplorable storylines in wrestling history, emblematic of a stunt and tease that devolved into utter folly.

3. Pillman’s Got a Gun

Brian Pillman’s career took a dramatic turn after a car accident severely damaged his leg, nearly costing him his life. Despite a challenging recovery following painful ankle surgery, Pillman’s “Loose Cannon” persona garnered widespread interest, ultimately leading him to sign a lucrative contract with the WWF.

As Pillman’s ankle struggled to heal, necessitating further surgery, the WWF creatively paired him with the rising star Steve Austin to maintain his on-screen presence. In a storyline developed to accommodate Pillman’s need for time off, Austin was scripted to re-injure Pillman’s ankle with a chair attack.

The storyline escalated with Austin vowing to confront Pillman at his home in Walton, Kentucky. In a highly controversial segment, Pillman was shown waiting for Austin with a 9mm handgun, threatening to shoot Austin should he show up.

When “Stone Cold” Steve Austin did appear, attacking two Heartland Wrestling Association wrestlers outside Pillman’s home as part of the staged angle, the situation inside the house reached a boiling point. As Austin broke through the door, scattering glass, the broadcast cut to Pillman’s wife screaming and a furious Pillman firing shots.

The storyline was met with widespread criticism for its disturbing content and lack of taste. The disbelief that Austin would actually be shot, coupled with the angle’s poor reception, led the USA Network to demand an on-air apology from Vince McMahon the following week.

2. WWE’s Live Sex Celebration

Long before he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, Edge (Adam Copeland) sought out to establish himself as a prominent heel known as the ‘Rated R Superstar’ was on the With Amy “Lita” Dumas by his side as a top women’s wrestler and manager. Their on-screen partnership was intertwined with real-life drama, notably Lita’s relationship issues with Matt Hardy, which WWE exploited for storyline purposes. This approach led to severe crowd backlash against Lita, fueling heat for both her and Edge. Their storyline reached a controversial peak at the 2006 Elimination Chamber, where Edge, having promised live sex in the ring on Raw if he won the WWE title, emerged victorious.

Following through, the next night on Raw featured the couple undressing to near nudity under a bed cover in the ring, an act that was interrupted before its conclusion. The segment was widely criticized for its explicit nature and discomforting implications.

Years after the event, Dumas shared on her Twitch stream that she had been coerced into participating in the angle by Vince McMahon. Despite the segment being presented as a tease meant to be interrupted, Lita was deeply uncomfortable with the extent of what was planned. When she expressed her reluctance, she was threatened with termination if she did not comply. This situation also upset Edge and John Cena, both of whom voiced concerns to McMahon about forcing Dumas into an angle she was uncomfortable with.

Despite these objections, McMahon insisted on proceeding with the segment. Dumas, feeling compelled, participated in the angle but left the company several months later. In a final act of disparagement, WWE had a character auction off her “leftover belongings” on-air, a move seen as an attempt to shame her character further. This episode remains a stark example of the wrestling industry’s past mishandling of personal boundaries and consent.

1. The Melanie Pillman Raw interview

The WWF disclosed the tragic news that Brian Pillman had been found dead in his Minnesota hotel room before a PPV in October 1997. In an immediate follow-up, the next night on Raw featured an on-air interview with Melanie Pillman, who was visibly in shock and grieving over the sudden loss of her husband. Vince McMahon conducted the interview, during which the TV crew insinuated it might be an elaborate hoax in the vein of an Andy Kaufman-esque stunt, supposedly masterminded by Pillman
.

Melanie Pillman, overwhelmed by her husband’s death, was portrayed as a deeply distraught and emotional widow. Given her state, it’s plausible she wasn’t in the best position to make a decision about appearing on TV. Nevertheless, McMahon, recognizing an opportunity, chose to use the death of Pillman as a ratings ploy. This incident starkly revealed McMahon’s mentality and the WWF’s operational ethos, casting a harsh light on the company’s regard for its personnel.

CM Punk, Young Bucks & More React As AEW Airs All In London Backstage Altercation

The wrestling world has made its views clear following the airing of backstage footage showing last year’s altercation between Jack Perry and CM Punk.

The April 10, 2024, episode of AEW Dynamite saw the Young Bucks air the much-anticipated footage from All In London 2023 that saw Perry and Punk get physical. The altercation led to both men being suspended from AEW and Punk being fired a week later.

The Wrestling World Reacts

Unsurprisingly, the airing of this footage has caused quite a stir among those in professional wrestling. On his Instagram Stories immediately after the segment, Punk shared an image of President George W. Bush with the message “Mission Accomplished.”

The Young Bucks took to Twitter to speak about being petty Executive Vice Presidents of All Elite Wrestling.

Shawn Spears, an AEW alum who has since returned to WWE as part of NXT, suggested that releasing the footage had backfired for Tony Khan.

Two-time WWE Hall of Famer Booker T, who previously made up a fictional altercation with Punk, used a gif of himself to express his surprise.

Eric Bischoff, who has been critical of AEW and Tony Khan, believes releasing the footage proved that Khan is a ‘clown,’ a term Punk used to describe him post-fight.

AEW’s Danhausen, a friend of CM Punk, was amused to see what unfolded, as a gif of ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper showed.

WWE/TNA Hall of Famer Bully Ray said it was “no bueno” for AEW that fans were chanting for Punk at Dynamite.

Bully also addressed the matter further on his Busted Open Radio: After Dark podcast.

“This is not on the talent. This is not on the locker room. And most of the time, it never ever is across the board. It’s on creative. It’s on the booker. It’s on the matchmaker. This company needs help. At this point, I hope even you diehards realize that.”

Ultimately, Punk will continue to be a source of controversy within AEW even after his release from the company. As far as these reactions and those by fans go though, it appears airing the footage may not have done AEW or Tony Khan any favors.

CM Punk Chants Breaks Out As AEW Airs Previously Unseen All In London Footage

CM Punk did indeed start the physicality between himself and Jack Perry at AEW All In, footage aired during the April 10, episode of AEW Dynamite has proved.

During the broadcast, the Young Bucks appeared and discussed their upcoming AEW Dynasty showdown with FTR. The AEW EVPs then showed the much-anticipated backstage footage from last August’s event in London’s Wembley Stadium.

The footage shows Punk speaking with Perry, presumably after the latter’s “Real glass” line during his pre-show match with Hook. Punk proceeds to shove Perry twice and get a choke on Jack before Samoa Joe and others intervene. The two are then kept in opposite corners of the room.

It’s unclear if the release of this footage will change anything in the grand scheme of things. After all, during Punk’s interview on the MMA Hour, he said that he didn’t punch anybody but “choked him a little bit” as the footage shown on AEW Dynamite proves.

The Fans Chant

In fact, some fans who attended Dynamite chanted for Punk after seeing him attack Jack Perry. There was also a thank you chant near the end of the footage as seen in the video clip from Dynamite below.

These chants did not go unnoticed by Bully Ray, who took to Twitter to respond:

While a portion of the audience at Dynamite appeared to be on Punk’s side, this footage isn’t a favorable look for Punk. The Chicago-Made star is a veteran with decades of wrestling to his name who should have known better at the time.

Ultimately, Punk is gone from AEW and seems much happier in WWE, where his conduct has been exemplary so far. With that said, the Best in the World proves to be quite the talking point with his former employer.

AEW All In Footage & CM Punk’s Backstage Fight With Jack Perry

  • CM Punk and Jack Perry were involved in a physical altercation backstage at AEW All In: London 2023 from Wembley Stadium (August 27, 2023).
  • This was Punk’s final date with the company before a messy breakup.
  • Punk told his side of the story last week on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour. He and AEW have been taking digs at one another ever since, and now AEW is teasing:
  • “The Young Bucks Present Backstage Footage From ALL IN LONDON & Will Discuss For The First Time”
  • Tony Khan and the Young Bucks say they’ll deliver tonight on Dynamite

AEW delivered on their promise to air the footage of CM Punk and Jack Perry’s All In brawl.

https://twitter.com/WrestlingCovers/status/1778222984869593412

WrestleMania XL is history, and wrestling fans are already getting another big topic to talk about: the release of the AEW All In Footage of CM Punk’s backstage brawl with Jack Perry that led to his abrupt departure from the company. Now, that footage has been released.

The Young Bucks introduced the footage on AEW Dynamite. They also took several underhanded digs at Punk, including saying that they don’t want to spread rumors. Nicholas and Matthew Jackson centered the entire promo around hyping their match against FTR at Dynasty on April 21, and how Punk is a friend of Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler.

Why AEW and the Young Bucks Are Releasing The “Backstage Footage”

Punk’s April 1 appearance on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani got intense. He commented on his physical altercation with Jack Perry backstage right before his final AEW match against Samoa Joe inside a packed Wembley Stadium. Punk, now a top-paid WWE Superstar, buried AEW and its management.

A perceived tipping point was Perry’s intent to use glass in a spot on AEW Collision, but Punk stopped him. At All In, Punk didn’t have the same influence, and Jungle Boy Jack taunted the Chicago legend live on camera.

Shortly thereafter, Khan gave his side of the story to a live AEW audience. “I’ve been going to wrestling shows for over thirty year, I’ve been producing them on this network for nearly four years. Never in all that time have I ever felt, until Sunday, that my security, my safety, my life was in danger.”

CM Punk Discusses Tony Khan

Punk placed onto AEW’s President for not diffusing his volatile situation with Perry before it ignited. He watched backstage as Perry taunted him in front of the world during the Zero Hour kickoff show.

After urging his boss to handle the situation, Punk says that Khan replied, “What do you want me to do?” The Second City Savior warned he’d be pushed to take action the company wouldn’t approve of.

“Man, that’s a loaded question because I don’t want this to be…I don’t like the drama, but the truth is the truth, he is not a boss, he’s a nice guy and I think ultimately that is a detriment to the company, but it’s not my company.”

AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland started off the first Dynamite after Punk’s interview by indirectly addressing the controversy. The ‘Rated R Superstar’ said, “There’s been a lot of negative BS that’s spewed this week, right? There has … SCREW THAT! I wanna talk about positives!”

AEW Delivered The Controversial Footage

CM Punk

Wrestling fans naturally wondered if this was legit or a bait and switch situation. Tony Khan made it clear that they will air the ‘real’ footage. Speaking to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, the AEW President clarified:

“This decision is based on putting on the best show for AEW, as well as driving interest for Dynamite and our Dynasty pay-per-view on April 21.”

Punk continues to prove that he is a lightening rod for controversy. He’s long gone from All Elite Wrestling, but he will probably help Dynamite draw viewers on Wednesday night. Love him or hate him, people just can’t stop talking about CM Punk.
